Cats 2 is the sixth episode in the 8 part series called COVID Kids and Companions where we celebrate a few of the positive things that came out of COVID as we serve up a virtual cornucopia of creature companions.

SPEAKER_00

You're listening to a special series on Acoustic Avenue. This is Ted Crouch, and I'll be your host for the next hour on today's program that has been co-produced with Joe Little in Calgary, Alberta. On Acoustic Avenue, we recognize with respect and gratitude that in the shoeswamp, the land on which we live, work, and play our music, is the unceded traditional territory of this equipment people. In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy. And all people who make their homes in the 3D seven region of Southern Over. We continue today with the second episode in our series of shows and companion where we're taking a musical look at a few of the positive from the end. Today we take a second look at our feline friend. Before going forward, let's make one thing clear. That's an archymoron if there ever was one. Household would be a better adjective. As we mentioned in the previous episode on felines, cats waited until we became civilized before joining the family unit. Specifically, a dog's duty was to protect and defend the home, whereas the cat's function was to protect the family's stored grain from rodents. We also mentioned that cats have a set of abilities that only they seem to possess, and that those abilities have led to a series of misunderstandings and myths. One of the things that may have contributed to these myths that most people aren't even aware of. Did you know that all of the animals with fur in the animal kingdom have three names? They have a face name, they have a tail name, and they have the name that we humans have given them. A cat also has a secret name that only they know. We are going to try to demonstrate those four names today in song. You can choose which segment is which. And, with a little history thrown in, such as it is widely believed that there were no native cats in the Americas, other than the big wild cats, such as cougars, lynx, and bobcats. And that they arrived with the Vikings and early explorers on their ships. In this set, you will hear Cat and the Fiddle by the Gothard sisters. Greta, Willow, and Salona are from Edmonds, Washington and perform Celtic music. Their inspiration started one day when their mother brought home a video of the theatrical show River Dance. The sisters play a variety of instruments, share the singing, and they can dance. That is followed by There Are No Cats in America. The song is from an American tale, a 1986 animated musical adventure film. It is the story of Bible Mouskovitz and his family as they emigrate from Ukraine to the United States for freedom. However, he gets lost and must find a way to reunite with them. We end the first set with The Kittyman, featuring Canadian star Bubbles, who hails from the Sunny Bale trailer park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, when he's not looking after kitties or hauling shopping carts out of the lake and selling them back to the grocery store at the mall. Bubbles is usually down at the Legion, playing music with his hit rockers, dreaming of making it big as a country and western star. And we start today's show where the cats all started in Europe. Here is Ian Anderson of Jethro Tullfame with Old Black Cat.

He passed away this morning. He never knew what a harder day was. Woke up late and he asked a roof. Just because He never spoke every time A last life was so good when he was bad. My old black cat wasn't much of a looker. You can ask and find just a quiet shadow. Got pushed around by all the other little guys. Didn't seem to find much, just the way I go. Add it about in first. You made it cool with white eyes. Black cat caught the night and gift. I guess this song we'll have to do.

SPEAKER_17

Keep it up, good work shining bright. I've waited all day for my chance to play. I'll fiddle all night and I'll sleep all day. This'll fiddle seen every place. Miles on the road, dust on the case. Cake did I hope to the rank like a cat with fiddle and tail the mind with me. You and the moon and me make three. The dish and the spoon ran away last night. The fork in the knife will be alright. This'll fiddle seen every place. Miles on the road and dust on the case. Hate little fiddle and I hope to the ring like a cat with a bit of a tail of a light. Oh, said the mouse as she saw me there. If I was not so small, new shoes I'd wear. I joined that leather for a dancer too. I'd leap and a tap till he told me shoe. This will fiddle seen every place. Miles on the road and dust on the case. Hate little fiddle and a hope to the right like a cat with a fiddle and a pale in mind. This'll fiddle seen every place. Miles on the road and dust on the case. Hate did a fiddle and a hope to the right like a cat with a fiddle and a pale in the line.

SPEAKER_19

In America there are no cats. But back home in Mother Russia, our family was traveling through the snow to mince. Suddenly Papa saw those huge paw prints. When I heard him screaming, I fainted dead away. And I woke up an orphan.

SPEAKER_01

You think the things were bad in a nice? You see things in my country. We found the rosary underground. Poor mamma mia.

SPEAKER_18

But sadder still, when I was but a lad, I lost my true love fair. A calicorn he caught us by surprise. In a flash of teeth and fur, her tail was all left of her. Neither is wearied to Rura.

SPEAKER_15

There once was a cat with a hungry belly. The name of the cat was Whiskers Jelly. His throat was dry and his bowl was bare. Meow me, fairy cats meow. Soon may the Cayman come with birds and mice and some tasty numbs.

unknown

One day when the craters come, we'll eat killer bellies a full.

SPEAKER_15

Well, Jelly got his boys and they gathered round. They scattered seeds from a sack they found. In hopes the seeds they spread on the ground would bring some critters a boot. Soon may the camen come with birds and mice and some tasty numbs. One day when the craters come, we'll eat killer bellies a full. While the king was bored and morel had dipped till one of the seeds grew green cat nib. They sniffed and they stacked and they all got ripped. They all had em yell at night. Soon may the caveman come with birds and mice and some tasty numbers.

unknown

One day when the craters come, we'll eat killer bellies at full.

SPEAKER_15

While their heads were hung when the morning was nigh, the nip was strong and they all got high. Their bellies were shrunk and their bowls still dry. Oh, bring us some ice today. Soon may the caveman come with birds and mice and some tasty numbs.

unknown

One day when the craters come, we'll eat killer bellies at full.

The second set continues with two brilliant artists and two classic songs. At one point in his career, Elton John expressed an interest in writing ultra pop songs for a film that kids would like. The time of the song was released in the most recent year of the rabbit. The song was released in the Vietnamese year of the cat. To close the first half of today's program, here is Elton John with The Circle of Life and Al Stewart with The Year of the Cat.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you to the songwriters and musicians who wrote the lyrics and composed the music and I hope you enjoyed the love and joy David Boy with a candy putting out fire. Considered one of Bowie's finest recordings of the decade. Putting out fire in the title is explained as follows. Long ago, our ancestors sacrificed their children to the leopards. The souls of the children grew inside the leopards until the leopards became human. We were gods then. We are an incestuous race. We can only make love with our own. Otherwise, we transform. But before we can become human again, we must kill. Welcome home. Here is Drive and David Bower.

SPEAKER_05

Comin' over the rise. And she looks at me with the big green eyes. And she spends the tail at the river's back in the park gallery. Don't lose her track. Stay loose. Stay close. Stay quiet. While she watched this town, this village cream with a cat suit on the nice and green. And she's all around that she's making a teacher on a cobble. She's hard to find won't hunt and fancy. On the fields are over there. Like she's back in the teeth on the cobble roll. While she watched this town, this bit of screen with a cat suit on. Looking nice and clean, it she's on the proud. Like she's back in the teeth on the carpet. Where the bag is slow. She's a big cat. She's a big cat. She's a big cat best.

SPEAKER_11

Don't you know my name? Well, you've been so long, and I've been putting up five with Castle D's eyes so red.

SPEAKER_06

SPEAKER_11

An ageless heart that can never mend. These tears can never dry. Judgment mate can never bend.

SPEAKER_06

See these eyes so green. I can't stand for a thousand years. Just be still with me.

SPEAKER_00
