Dogs 2 is the fifth episode in the 8 part series called COVID Kids and Companions where we celebrate a few of the positive things that came out of COVID as we serve up a virtual cornucopia of creature companions.
You're listening to a special series on Acoustic Avenue. This is Ted Crouch, and I'll be your host for the next hour on today's program co-produced with Joe Little in Calgary, Alberta. On Acoustic Avenue, we recognize with respect and gratitude that in the shoes world, the land on which we live, work and play our music, is the unceded traditional territory of this equipment and people. In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy. Welcome to the episode as we continue today with our special series of COVID kids and companions, and a collection of songs about the newly arrived to our world children and the adoption of so many families during the COVID pandemic. Today we take a second look at our lifelong companions. They greet everyone they see with a friendly hello. They are known for empathetic nudges when you're having a bad day. When scolded, run right back and make a friend, and to be loyal to a fool. And to never pretend to be someone you're not. They are your friend, your partner, and your defender. You are their life, their love, and their leader. And they will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of their heart. Every dog has these traits, and yet they all are individuals. And in today's show, we will try to demonstrate that commonality and individualism in the song. In this set, you will hear Dwight Yokeman, artist who has a style defined by a variety of influences, both inside and outside country music. He has released ten studio albums, won two Grammy Awards, and one Academy of Country Music Award. He will sing I've Got a Dog. And Cleveland-based honky tonk band Corey Grinder and the Playboy Scouts will follow that up with the title track from their EP to Good Boy, released in May of 2020, despite multiple national tours for the band being cancelled due to COVID. Post-pandemic, the band is running with a new album of old school Bakersfield Country Chalk full of hard-driving trucker tunes, country waltzes, and grooven hillbilly jams. Honky Tonk and Beauty Supreme exemplifies the Playboy Scout oath. On my honor, I will do my duty to two-step dancers and honky tonkers everywhere. The first set will end playing a short tune that many of you may fondly recall. Did you know the first two pilots for this series were filmed in Calgary, Alberta? True story. We begin with the first song about a dog in my memory. Here is Doors Day with another classic dog down memory lane from the album Sentimental Journey and her 1950s hit How much is that doggy in the window?
SPEAKER_06How much is that doggy in the window? The one with the wagony check. How much is that dog in the window? I do hope that dog is worth it. I must take a trip to California and leave my force to be hard for a while. If he has a dog, he won't be lonesome. And the dog he will have a good home. How much is that dog in the window? The one with the wagon. How much is that dog in the window? I do hope that dog is for stage. I read in the face a robber. With a flashlight that shine in the dark. My laugh needs a doggy to protect you and scare them away with one bar. I don't want a bunny or a kitty. I don't want a fairy dog. I don't want a bowl of little fish. How much is that dog in the window? The one with the waggily chair. How much is that dog in the window? I do hope that dog he's for save.
SPEAKER_11I've got a dog, and he's got me. We get along so he's a lee. Wherever I go, he's by my side. I've got a dog. I'm satisfied. I've got a dog. He house along. Whenever I play a lonesome song, I've got a dog. I call him Hank. My lucky stars, I sure do think. Got so flies and a big old heart. This dog mine, he doesn't bark. Except all day after dark. He's kinda proud, he won't do tricks. My dog won't wet or fetch me sticks. He won't roll over if I say so. If I say speak, he just says no. Being doubt pretty at a fancy show in the great big city is a mix of hand with an adultery. I've got a dog, and he's got me. We get along so easily. Wherever I go, he's by my side. I've got a dog, I'm satisfied, I've got a dog, I'm satisfied, I've got a dog, I'm satisfied.
SPEAKER_05They call me good boy. I never barker how they call me good boy, so used to anyhow. I once had a best friend, good place to call home all the love I could dream for now and then thrown upon these days. I'm scolded, told to scram each face a scow, they call me good boy, at least they used to anyhow. Me and my family went on a nature trail, running in a mountain, wagging my tail. It was like a dream then till a big cat came along. They called him a mountain iron. That's when everything went wrong. They call me good boy. I've never bore. I've come and I'm calm fool. I can shake and I can laugh. I'm a good boy. Never hear me grasp. Then enough was enough. My family got away. And I'm thankful for that. But I ain't seen them since then. Thanks to that dang old cat. They call me good boy. I've never bore how. I come when I'm called foam. I can shake and I can laugh. I know I'm a good boy. Never hear me growl. They call me good boy. I heard there's a place where all dogs will go. Unite with our loved ones and a million miles to roam. I'm growing weary. They call me good boy. They call me good boy And they will again now.
SPEAKER_00That'll be followed by Lon Conklin from Wood's Dog, New York, and his 2021 offering My Dog's Bastard Friend. Simpson has released seven studio albums and is a Grammy Award-winning artist as well as garnering several Grammy nominations. Quite an accomplishment for a person who gave up on his musician career before his wife and friends encouraged him to pursue his passion. To start things off in this set, here is Luke Bryan, originally from Leesburg, Georgia. Now a resident of Nashville, Bryan is one of the most successful and awarded country artists of the last two decades. He's one of the world's best-selling music artists with over 75 million records sold. From his fifth studio album, Kill the Lights, released in 2015. Here is Little Boys Grow Up and Dogs Get Old.
SPEAKER_12He said, Sonny is yours. From now on, Bandit looked at me, and he cocked his head, slept at night on the foot of my bed. All that year. Down to the bus stop. I knew that's free. Still right there when I got home again. I thought we would be together. Go on and on just like that. Forever. But I was John Blackbig. I guess I just didn't know. Little boys grow up and all, you know. He was my side. Summer came and went. I don't know if I raised every race. Go on and on just like that. I was jumping. That was that book. He was fourteen when I left. He came down from forstead. I got down, I get.
SPEAKER_04Sometimes you gotta say goodbye. And sometimes you gotta say it too soon. Good trucks sell run forever. If you keep all in them and you treat them right. Good woman holds you together. She'll stick with you for the rest of your life. Good buddies and law always come running, got you back no matter what. But good dogs don't live long enough. It hurts like hell to lose them. You never think about 'em not being around. You know you never forget on. How could you when you grew up with 'em? If you fed one like that, you know what I'm talking about. Putin 13 years of good memories out under that old old tree. Good trucks sell a run forever. If you keep all in them and you treat them right. A good woman holds you together, she'll stick with you for the rest of your life. Good buddies in law always come running, got you back no matter what. Your good dogs don't live long enough.
SPEAKER_14Floppy ears and furry toes. He don't mind that I'm flawed. I need a hand. I find a fall. When I do wrong, yonder stands. I'm not like him. I'm just a man. I'm a dog's best friend. Say to wait back when he was just a bug and became my bud. Now he knows me well. Oh, would he tell? Best thing I ever be my dog's best friend. Thinks I'm a star. Loves when I say, likes mandolins. Enjoy me. As a way to warm my heart without a word or try on. He wants to please. He'll never fail. It takes a wag. I'm a dog's best friend. Say to wake back when he was just a and became my bug. Now he knows me well. Oh would he tell this thing I could be? My dog's best friend. Says away back when he was just a bug and became my butt. Now he knows me well. Oh, but he would tell. Best thing I ever did. It's my dog's best friend. My dog's best friend.
SPEAKER_03Well, a good dog on the grounds worth three in the saddle. No matter where you're from. Sam was the greatest one. He was the hound of hounds. He was the wonder of all walkers. He loved hounds of the mouth. He loved three in the wagons. Most of all, he was my best friend and he was around in a little bit of any means of never led up. You were on a bare bone ground in a mall longer. Well good dog on the ground for three and the south. He was found in the house. He was wonderful. He loved the man. He loved three and the dragons. Most of all he was my best friend.
SPEAKER_00My dog and me. And we landed that with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the dog is on the run from the album Southern Accent. Here is Kat Stevens, John Hyatt and the Goners, Brendan Beyondi, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
SPEAKER_09I love my dog as much as I love you. But you may faint. All he ever needs is love. And that he knows he'll get so I love my dog as much as I love you. But you make a fate. My dog will always come through. All the pay I need comes shining through his eyes. I don't need no cold water to make me realize that I love my dog as much as I love you. But you may perfect, my dog will always come true. I love my dog as much as I love you. My dog will always come through my dog, baby alone, my dog.
SPEAKER_13How many times can one dog be? I guess she gotta go down and win too eat. But I gotta go next to the mouth. I never felt so free. It was just my dog in the chicken, she's gonna die. No doubt she worked in the money. Oh, she fades the night. Just to keep my butt from a friend. Come back to tell me that the coast is clear. It's a different world that's tea. And it's just my dog. From the crack of the room to the end of the day. So it's time to easy down the devil's back. She wouldn't know any other way. That's just my dog and me. I never felt so free. It's just my dog and me.
SPEAKER_10I can't wait to get you up in the morning when the sun is shining bright. It's gonna be another day with you. We're gonna run and play and seize the day. There ain't nothing like chasing your cares away with you. Oh, with you. If you're down, I'll help you turn around. Nobody knows how much I love you. Nobody knows how much I care. There's a free goal, let's get out there and live in. Walking next to you may seem to be just another little thing in the world you see. But the truth is it just means so much to me. I'm gonna wag my jail, gonna dig a bunch of holes. I don't know why. But I think it means I love you. If you are down, I'll help you too. Nobody knows how much I love you. Nobody knows how much heart of my life And it's gonna be good on when we're out here having fun. Nobody knows how nobody knows how much I get. Let's get out there. Nobody knows where the story goes. Don't wanna be all your life. I just wanna be a bad friend. When it's time to go to bed at night, I'd like to curl up by your side and dream of another day with you. So good night.
SPEAKER_16Yeah, that was the way to cold out on the ground, like a dog on the ground, it's just a lot of people.
SPEAKER_00Well, this brings us to the final set for today's program on Acoustic Academy. Thank you to the songwriters and the organizations who wrote the lyrics and composed the music. And I hope you enjoyed the ultimate joy. Thank you to Joe Little. Oh my god, don't worry when you come around with his Grammy Award-winning album going back to New Orleans. Here are Rufus Thomas, Little Milton, and Dr. John.
SPEAKER_15Dressed in black, silver buttons all down her back. Hallow, tipsy toe. She broke a needle and she can't so walk in a dog. Guess a walking bird dog. If you don't know how to do it. I tell you, I don't want the dog. That's what mama got 157. See the elephant jump the fence. He jumped the eye, he touched the sky. Just to walk in the dog. If you don't know how to do it, I tell you how to walk the dog. Come on up. Come on, come on. What the gonna grow? You got silver bell, and you got doctor shells. Pretty made all in a rope. Walking the dog. That's the walking bird. If we don't ought to do it, stay up on walking dog.
SPEAKER_07Just a test and just a walk up.
SPEAKER_15You know, that's a real good time. That's a real good sign. And when you go home and find your bedroom empty. Oh, that's another good sign for rain. When I got home to see. You know my dog was quiet as he could be. Yes, when I got home to see. My dog was as quiet as he could be I could tell my father's face. That's a real misery. Yeah, one of dogs starts to howl. That's a just time of misery. You know that woman to have my dog and me.
SPEAKER_02Say you ain't been hanging around my crib. Well, here's something I wanna know. I wanna know what in the world is going down. How come my dog don't bark when you come around? I got the baddest dog, he'll bite anybody. He bit my little brother, took a chunk out of my old sweet little mother. He bit the mailman, he sees him every day. He takes one look at you, he wanna jump up and play. Now I ain't got a clue as to what you putin' down. But how come my dog don't balk when you come around? My dog is dangerous. Try to set people straight. Even bought a band dog sign and hung it on the gate. Here you come trippin' about a quarter to nine. Pull of that night train wine, tryna slide past the sign. My dog then nine off ain't paying you no mind. That's my dog when I come home, he don't sleep that sound. How come my dog don't balk when you come around? I still don't like it, I don't dig it one damn bit. When you and my dog so tight, something don't fit. Now slip through the alley, I call my dog. Say, get up off your rusty dust. Move a little faster to your old master, your Caillou. He took one look at me, he growled and he ran straight to you. Now somebody's been confusing my whole hound. Now wanna know what's going down. How come my dog don't bark when you come around? Maybe I better call up Jacoby and Mise. And you can take the fifth amendment that is. You better stand up for your rights, cause you might not be stained it too long. I'm gon' stop all this confusion. I'm gonna fire that hound, shoot that dog down, then I'm gonna get busy mutilating, strangling, operating, and cremating my old lady down at the cremation station. Then I'm gon' torch that too, and come right on after you. I'm going straight down to that barber supply shop, get me a pearl hand, double-edge, high ground, super blue blade, adjustable, stainless steel, honey edge, both blades on the same side. So when I cut you once, you gon' bleed twice. Going and coming. And if you don't believe me, shake your head, it'll be singin', I ain't got nobody. Cause one night I did a little FBI 007 type investigation. You and old lady thought I was gone, but I wasn't gone. That's why I had to separate you from your crown. And the only sound you gon' hear when you six feet in the ground.
