In this episode of Sirens we take our third look at what we believe is the truth behind the Myth of Homers story of two sisters whose beautiful and beckoning singing could hypnotize all those who hear it, and thus, compel them to sail their ships into the rocks of their island and drown.
This is Acoustic Avenue. I'm Ted Crouch, your host with Joe Little. On Acoustic Avenue, we recognize with respect and gratitude that these lands where we live, work, and play our music remain home to a number of indigenous nations and people. We acknowledge this land out of respect for the indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Have you ever heard the expression that a myth? Well, what is a myth? A myth is described as a traditional story, often with symbolic meaning, that serves to explain natural phenomena, the origin of a culture or aspects of human existence. Myths are typically rooted in a culture's beliefs and often involve supernatural beings, heroes, and extraordinary events. In today's show, we take a third look at what we believe is the truth behind the myth of Homer's story of the sirens. Two sisters whose beautiful and beckoning singing could hypnotize all those who hear it, and thus compel them to sail their ships into the rocks of their island and drown. That truth being the power of the female singing voice. And in the past century, we have been given dozens of examples of those supernatural voices. This is Dusty Springfield with windmills of your mind, followed by Tracy Chapman and Give Me One Reason.
SPEAKER_03And the set ends with Deborah Cox singing Couldn't We Like a circle and a spine, like a wheel within a wee, never ending in a beginning, I'm an ever-spinning wheel, like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon, like a carousel that's turning, running wings around the moon, like a clock whose hands are sweeping as the minutes of its face, and the world is like an apple whirling silently in space, like the circles that you find in the windows of your mind. Where the sun has never shown, like a door that keeps revolving in a half-forgotten dream, or the ripples from a pebble, someone tosses in a street, like a clock whose hand is sweeping past the minutes of its face And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind Keep the jingle in your pocket Where's the jingle in your head? Why did someone go so quickly? Was it something that you saw? Lovers walk along the shore with the sound of distant drum just the thing that you just hang in a hallway and the fragment of a song Perhap remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong? When you knew that it was over, you were suddenly aware that the autumn leaves were turning to the color of Like a circle in a spile, like a wheel in a wheel, never ending all again on an airless and wheel as the image in wise, and then we're gonna go to the body.
