In this episode of Sirens we reconnect with our multi-part series and have a listen to some of the amazing voices that have hypnotized and enthralled men and women, over the decades.
This is Acoustic Avenue. I'm Ted Crouch, your host, with co-producer Joe Little. We respectfully acknowledge that we live, work, and make our music on the traditional lands of the Sequma nation, who have cared for their territory within Turtle Island since time immemorial, and continue to do so till today. This show reconnects with our multi-part series called Sirens, that we come back to now and again. It has been said that all myths are based in truth. For centuries, Homer's epic poem The Iliad, the story of the Trojan War, was considered to be a myth. Then, in 1870, archaeologist Heinrich Schleiman discovered Troy, and the scientific world had to come to terms with the fact that the myth was in fact based in fact. Another of Homer's epic poems is The Odyssey. And today we're going to take our second look at what we believe to be the truth behind the myth. That one of the stories in it is based on the sirens, our two sisters, whose compelling and hypnotic singing could captivate all those who heard it, and thus draw them to their doom. Today, we will have a listen to some of the amazing voices that have hypnotized and enthralled men and women over the decades. Barbara Streisand opened the show with people. Then Judy Collins performs Ascend in the Clouds. And we end the first set with Jan Arden singing I Would Die for You, the lead track from her debut album Time for Mercy. SPEAKER_00Opening this set is Beth Hart, renowned for her emotionally intense performances, with her voice conveying vulnerability and pain and power with a striking authenticity. She will sing, I love you more than you'll ever know. And Pat Anitar, originally classically trained and a trailblazing rock icon, was one of the first women to break through in a male-dominated hard rock scene in the late 1970s. She will sing her and more interesting side of her artistry. She sings crying a river that was hit in nineteen fifty-five and launched her career.
