Music - What is it about Music that makes it such an intriguing art form to us? It’s    because Music is everywhere. — it’s in the air between us — just waiting to be sung. It is the means of painting a picture on silence — not canvas. Whether composing, playing or just listening, music speaks to our very souls.  To live is to be musical — it’s in our veins.

SPEAKER_00

With co-producer Joe Little. On acoustic Avenue, we recognize with respect and gratitude that these lands where we live and work and play our music remain home to a number of indigenous nations and people. We acknowledge this land out of respect for the indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island from before the arrival of southern peoples until this day. To start things off with today's program, here's a joke.

SPEAKER_13

Music. What is it about music that makes it such an intriguing art? Is it because music is everywhere in the air between us just waiting to be sunk? Or is it because it is the music? Whether composing playing or just music speaks to a very small need to be musical.

SPEAKER_00

Here it is John Miles with music. The beach boys play. I can hear music. And the set ends with Tom Johnson from the Doobie Brothers, joined by a number of global players and singers on the plane for change recording. Listen to the music.

SPEAKER_06

Music was my first love, and it will be my last music of the future, and music of the past to live without my music to be impossible to do. In this world of trouble, my music pulls me through the meeting for me, but it's a good idea. And it will be my last music of the future. The music of the pan. The music of the past music of the past.

SPEAKER_07

Whenever you touch me, baby.

SPEAKER_11

Whenever you knew I knew the music over time, yeah. I beat the music over time now, baby. I hear the music over time. I gave the music. I gave the music.

SPEAKER_07

I can be music. I can be music. Oh, I can be sweet, sweet.

SPEAKER_18

Getting rid of the news. Some are happy. Some I sick. Oh now I'm gonna let that news it be. What the baby I need is a way to make a smile. That ain't so hard to do with you know how. Gotta get a messy. Eat it over. Oh now mama gonna get that out the way.

SPEAKER_15

Woo! Listen to the music. Woah! Listen to the music! Woah, woah! Listen to the music!

SPEAKER_03

What I know, you know better, everything's the same. We'll be happy and we'll day whoa, whoa, dancing out away. If I'm feeling good to you and you're feeling good to me, there is nothing we can do or say feeling good, feeling fine, whoa, I'm gonna let myself on mine.

SPEAKER_10

Oh listen to the music Oh Listen to the music Oh Listen to the music Oh Like a lazy flowing river Stand on the cows in the sky And the trout is growing bigger Listen to the happy sound, and I'm gonna let it flow Listen to the Volta Listen to the Father Take Music Go down to go down showing how the music goes around and around.

SPEAKER_08

I think rock and roll music and I love to get the chance to play and sing it I figured it's about the happiest sound going down today The message may not move me or be made great deal to me But hey it feels so grouping to so I think the mamas and the papas and the drum tons that could be all I'm thinking the good when the buttons don't get it on the dog do you win I'm a child that you can't find the really fail me to the wall Turn the fin defin the gym chip that we'll make chit your birthday bright tea And when the feet got it with the beat it back to Rock and roll music I could really get it on that scene I think I could say something if you know what I mean What if I really say it's like a day between the I had a dream that you were pregnant And I awoke to pray That the stork who carries baby songs was headed my way And I was tangled in the seat And I was torn from between the two The man who married music And the man who married you Am I over the hill?

SPEAKER_12

Have I gone around the bill Cause I'm out there chasing songs with melody That never end, and I sing them cause I have to, and I love them so I do the man who married music, the man who married you. Every life is suffering, every life is pain, agony and ecstasy are my middle names. Truth is stranger than fiction, and strange is what I do. So keep a candle in the window, I'll be home. Cause on the day we were wed, there were two grooms and two brides, and I stood right beside you. They stood beside us too. The man who married music, the man who married you, and I miss you when I'm everywhere. I miss you when I'm home. I miss you when I'm nothing, and when I'm alone. Truth is stranger than fiction, and strange is what I do. The man who married music, and the man who married you, the man who married music, and the man who married you.

SPEAKER_04

Then I float on down the river to cage and I'd away. Ride around with all her clean. Make a map, like rip and winkle, make stream and again. Grandma used to play. Spin the beep being lazy. Just be in the nature's friend. I'm already frightened bending over to cat. Place them back home. Come on, music. Let comes from the heart. Place something lots of feeling. Cause it's to abuse the cast a star. My grandma, grandpa used to play.

SPEAKER_17

Oh baby, I'll be there. Oh baby, I'll be there.

SPEAKER_00

Our good friend Scott sings one of his masterpieces. And the set hands with David Gates and Brad and the guitar man.

SPEAKER_05

An only child alone and while a cabinet maker's son. His hands were meant for different work, and his heart was known to know. He left his arm and went to his known. And saw a terry way. And he gave to me a gift I know I never can repay. A quiet man of music denied a simple fate. He tried to be a soldier once, but his music wouldn't weigh. He yearned his love through discipline, a thundering velvet hand. His gentle means of sculpting souls took me years to understand. The leader of the band is died, and his eyes are growing old. But his blood runs through my instrument, and his song is in my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man. I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band. For they heard another call. One went to Chicago and the other to St. Paul. And I'm in Colorado when I'm not in some hotel. Living out this life I've chose and come to know so well. I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go. I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough. And Papa, I don't think I said I love you near enough. The leader of the band is tired, and his eyes are growing old. But his blood runs through my instrument, and his song is in my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man. I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band. I am a living legacy to the leader the band.

SPEAKER_19

From the body of a tree, through the workshop of a luthier. Now it's all on me, and it's good company after dinner. And it fits my hands just fine. But someday another singer with a pair of hands like mine will coax out songs much prettier, still hiding in its strings. Sing stronger, braver words than I could ever sing. And folks are gonna love it. This I'm almost sure, so I take good care of it. Cause I'm borrowing it from her. Pass it along, pass it along. May it land in careful hands when we're gone. You can't read for a moment, but time won't own it to you for long. You don't own it, pass it along. This here is my country. Sometimes it's hard to recognize it, but I count myself lucky to have been born inside it, and I'm grateful for the rights. Others struggle a harder win, and you can be sure I'm gonna fight. They try and take 'em back again. Oh, and everywhere teachers, though some fell along the way, and the words they said still reaches. Just like you're teaching me here today, and you may not speak it loud, but it's clear in what you do, and I hope to make you proud. Cause I borrowed it from you. Pass it long, pass it along, may it land in careful hands when we're you can't read for a moment. The time won't own it till you've alone. You don't own pass along. Seems these days we're in a hurry to grab up all that's left to use, putting patents on discovery, making seeds that don't reproduce. If our vision is so narrow, see an only body soul will end up like the pharaohs, buried with their gold. We've all pushed this thing along, we've all been guided by our fear. But the river sings a song. We've gotta be quieter to hear. It's in every child's face. New and hopeful as a stem. Best be gentle with this place. Cause we're borrowing it from them. Pass it along, pass it along. May it land in careful hands when we're gone. You can't read for a moment. Time won't own it to you for long. You don't own it. Pass it along, pass it along. May it land in careful hands when we're gone. You can't read for a moment. Time won't own it to you for long. You don't own it, pass it along Who draws the crowd and plays aloud, baby?

SPEAKER_06

It's the guitar man. Who's gonna steal the show? You know, baby, it's the guitar man. He can make you love, he can make you cry. He will bring you down, he'll get you high. Something keeps him going Miles and miles a day to find another place to play. Night after night, you treat your eye, baby. It's the guitar made Who's on the radio? You go listen to the guitar made. When he comes to town and you see his face, and you think your mouth would like to take it away. Something keeps you rifting miles and miles away, searching for the songs to play. Then you listen to the music, and you like to sing along. You want to get the meaning out of each and every song, and you find yourself a message and some words to call your own and take them home. You will bring it down, you make it out. Something keeps you moving, but no one's changed to roll. What it is that makes me go Then the lights begin to flicker and the sound is getting thin. The voice begins to falter and the crowds are getting thin. But it never seems to notice it's just got to find the face to fight.

SPEAKER_20

With the sound of muses, with songs they have sung for a thousand years. The hills fill my heart with the sound of music. My heart wants to sing every song it is. My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees. My heart wants to sigh like a child that flies from a church on a breeze, to laugh like a brook when it trips and falls over stones on its way, to sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray.

SPEAKER_06

You went out on the street without your shoes on. You didn't listen what your mama said. She said you won't feel the benefit over there. And if we all went out without our shoes on, tell me where would we be? Where would we be all the people in the world? Lost their research. What would we see? Where would we be? All the entertainers in the world lost their music. What would they play? What could they say to specify them well? Justify themselves. Like a cloud behind the sun. Like the face behind the clown. You move it like the raincoat in a frown. You can never look back. Leave the spawn upon the wheel. God wants your case in your hand. The wondrous soon returns.

SPEAKER_09

The cover of the grass is just the same.

SPEAKER_02

You can fall with the bird over the real. You can ride with the colours. You can run with the devil. But the bad woman making you will be a bit of a lot of people.

SPEAKER_06

But if you do, you better do it right. Or you won't feel the benefit, won't feel the better man. Spin the wheel and take your chances. And your number might come up. Though the odds may be in favor of the high All the people in the world could say together. All the people in the world could sing together.

SPEAKER_00
