What do you do when following Jesus gets costly?
As we continue walking through 1 Peter, we’re reminded that persecution, pressure, rejection, and suffering have always been part of the story of God’s people—but they never get the final word.
Peter writes to believers who are scattered, misunderstood, and facing real opposition, yet he keeps pointing them beyond what they’re experiencing to what God has promised. The pressure may be real, but it’s temporary. The opposition may be loud, but it’s temporary. The suffering may hurt, but this is temporary.
In Episode 8, we talk about how to remain faithful when culture pushes back, why suffering doesn’t mean God has abandoned you, and how an eternal perspective changes the way you endure temporary pain.

SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I want to also say to our street team, um, like what Tim and I are doing together, we're trying to like build a community, right? This is not just two dudes from the street who God saved, you know, just talking to you across the camera or across the audio, wherever you're hearing or listening. But when we say street team, we're talking about a community. We're talking about a national community, a global community. We are the street team. And by street team, we mean those of us who are on mission for the Lord Jesus Christ, wherever we are in our various spheres of influence. And so this is our community, right? And and we do appreciate your comments, like my brother Tim was saying. We do go in there and we read those comments. It encourages us, you know, and all human beings, we need to be encouraged, right? Um, we we don't want to have the type of life where we need the approval of people or else we will die by their rejection. But as human beings, we do need encouragement, right? So we remember men like Barnabas, he was an encouragement to Paul, right? So human beings need encouragement. And uh we do read these comments, right? We we go in there, we read what God is doing in your lives, we read uh some of the things that you shared with us. Um, and and even if we don't respond, um we see them and they mean a lot to us. And so, man, like Tim said, please continue to comment, share your heart. If something is you're watching an episode and something comes up in your heart, go ahead and write it. You know, um, you watch an episode, the Lord gives your word, man. Go ahead and write it. And sometimes you might be watching an episode and the Lord gives your word for other people in the comments. Maybe it's just not for Tim and I, maybe it's for somebody else to share. You might hear something in the episode and be like, man, I have a testimony around what Phil just said, what Tim just said. You can write that in the comments and encourage your brothers and sisters in the comments. Yeah, I can have conversations in the comments and love on one another because we are the street team, right? We are a global family on mission for Jesus. So we just want to thank you for that. Thank you for commenting, for liking, subscribing, sharing all the things that means a lot to us. Um, season two, Tim and I walking through First Peter together. It is a letter written by the Apostle Peter uh to a people, a church that was dealing with very fierce persecution in the first century A.D. under the Emperor of Nero. And he's encouraging them in the military persecution. And um, it's important because I feel like this letter is germane to the times. And here is a fact, right? Here is a fact we all know from anecdotal data, right? Life, let me just say this. Yeah. Some people who are young may not know this. But the older you get, you'll know this. So here is the anecdotal data from those of us who are who are a little bit older. Here is what we can testify of, Tim. We can all testify, if you live longer than five minutes, that life is a conveyor belt of disappointments, hardships, trials, setbacks, uh, situations, pain, disappointment, frustration. Life is a conveyor belt, all those things. It doesn't matter if you're wealthy, if you're poor, everybody deals with challenges on their level. And uh, and and what these words of Peter, um, something's popping off next door. You know what I mean? Like parties. We need to go over there and share the gospel with them. We should invite them over here for our episode. Yeah. Yo, we in New York in a studio, and like in the studio next door to us, like something popping off in the studio. We should tell them to come over here and sit on the couch, right? Like, hear the gospel. And um, but but but what what the words of Peter, what the words of Peter is to us. Wait, hold on. It's somebody's birthday.
SPEAKER_01Somebody's birthday. We should go over there and wish them happy birthday after this episode. Let's go over there and knock on their studio and be like, little happy birthday.
SPEAKER_00All right, we're gonna go over there and wish somebody happy birthday. But um, but but the words of Peter really is encouraging us. Um it's a it's an encouragement to people suffering, um, with the hopes that they would hear those words and find strength. And um the the the encouragement is not empty platitudes, right? He's not encouraging them with a bunch of promises and prophecies about material things. He's encouraging them with language that helps keep their focus on where their focus needs to be, on uh on eternity, on our spiritual heritage, on the fact that God is allowing us to suffer trials and tribulations to perfect the authenticity of our of our witness and of our testimony and reminding us where our hope lies, which is beyond this lifetime. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I love the the text, and I I even love the setting in which we are communicating it. You know, sometimes um, you know, people's podcasts are polished and overproduced. I love the noise. I love the sirens and the alarms.
SPEAKER_00You know, when you think about it's like ghetto, ghetto fabulous ghetto.
SPEAKER_01When you think about a street preacher, you think about a person on the side of a corner of a street with a bullhorn, they don't care about the noise that's surrounding them. They're there for one thing to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ. That's good, man. I love that bullhorn. This is our bullhorn. I like that. I like that, bro.
SPEAKER_00I really I love that, bro. The noise, the noise, right? Right? The noise, the plants falling in the middle of prayer. Absolutely. Alarms going off while we pray, and and and God warning people through those things, and and people celebrating birthdays in the studios next door. It's all good, right? We street preachers, and you know, I I love how the scripture talks about Ezekiel, like you know, in like Ezekiel was a street preacher, he was out there in the middle of exile preaching in the street, essentially, and some of his contemporaries was you know up in the in the big house doing their thing, but God uses his people everywhere, right? Both in palaces and on street corners to the glory of Christ. Yeah, man. Yeah, it's a beautiful thing. It is a beautiful thing.
SPEAKER_01I I I love this movement that God allows us to steward. Yeah. And I love in our street team. They they they rock heavy with us, and as we get to this text today, yeah, you know, I'm encouraged by this text because we know what it is to go through pain, we know what it is to go through persecution, we know what it is uh to be in the middle of it, yeah, and know that God is purifying us, yeah, and having a hope that can only be found in Jesus. It is hopeless to know that you got trials, yeah, tribulations, pains, persecution, circumstance with no hope, no savior, no savior, no one to be with you in the middle of it, but there is a hope, there is a faith, there is uh uh expectation, a joy that can be found in knowing. Although I'm going through these things, yeah, he'll never leave me. Never forsake me. Never forsake me. Yeah, he'll be with me until the very end.
SPEAKER_00So I want to I'm gonna read I'm just gonna read nonstop to the verse that we're gonna be starting with this particular episode. Yeah. Um, I want to start where he began his encouragement. Now remember, Peter is writing to or wrote to believers who are suffering great persecution in Rome under Nero, put to death, losing husbands and wives, children, losing their parents, a lot of suffering. And this is how he begins his encouragement. Blessed, in verse three, blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, without which there is no Christianity, to an inheritance that is imperishable. It is undefiled and unfading. It is kept for us in heaven, for you who by God's power are being guarded. Strong words, what's being protected? You are being protected. How are you being protected? Through faith for salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. That's where we are right now, in the last time. In this, what you rejoice, not in materialism, not in things that's gonna fade away. We rejoice in that list of intangible things. In this, you rejoice, though now for a little while. That's what he called life. He called life a little while, he called life temporary, he called life fading. So therefore, we know everything we're going through is temporary and street team. Anything that is temporary is tolerable.
SPEAKER_01Say that again.
SPEAKER_00Anything that is temporary is tolerable. I'm going through this hardship, temporary. I'm going through this trial, temporary. I've been shedding these tears, temporary. Anything that is temporary is tolerable. So you call life just a little while. Right? If necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested of your genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire. We talked about that on the last episode. Tested by fire. Man, we should turn that into like a you should preach that. I'm gonna turn that into like a series or something. Tested by fire. Yeah, tested by fire, may be found to result in the praise and the glory and the honor to the revelation of Jesus Christ. And here we go with this episode, verse eight. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not see him, you believe in him and rejoice in the joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the outcome, the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Tim, this is he right here. Let's unpack this, Tim.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. I when I I'm reading this, I'm reminded I have to be faithful even when I don't feel him close.
SPEAKER_00Say that again.
SPEAKER_01I have to be faithful even when I don't feel him close. So when he feels when he feels distant. Yeah, there's seasons where God feels really close. Yeah. Like I I can hear his voice. It's almost like his lips are right by my ear. Yeah. And then there are seasons where I can't feel him. I I don't really hear him the way that I heard him in the previous season. But I still have to be faithful. Yeah. I still have to be consistent in my word, consistent in my time, consistent in worship. Yeah. Because the various seasons of how I hear him does not mean that he's not speaking.
SPEAKER_00Let me ask you a question. All right. Let me ask you this question. So in seasons where, because I've had seasons like that too, in seasons where you feel like God feels distant, and maybe you feel like I'm praying, but Lord, are you listening? What gets you through those seasons when you feel like he's distant?
SPEAKER_01Worship. And and um worship is the thing for me personally, yeah, that refocuses my attention on him. And it takes the focus and attention off of me. And it reminds me of why I am created. And so worship is the one thing God can't do. Right. So he creates us to worship. Right. Not because he needs it, but because we need it. We need it when I worship, I feel connected to him. When I worship, I'm tethered to him. When I worship, I'm immediately immersed in his presence. And it's not because God needs that, he's not insecure, it's because we need that. Right. And we are insecure without it. Right. And so I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_00So for you, worship gets you through those times.
SPEAKER_01Worship gets me through those times. And it's moments in worship where I'm praying, and then it's moments in worship where I'm thinking. Yeah. It's moments in worship where I every single time I'm killing something. Because that in fact is what worship is. Worship is not just a song. Come on, bro. Worship is a posture. Right? And that this is why in the Old Testament, Bro, I don't listen, man.
SPEAKER_00I ain't laughing because of what you're saying, bro. You know what? I'm laughing. I'm laughing, bro, because I do the same thing. Yeah, yeah. You and I never talk about that. Bro, when God feels distant from me, man, I'll go take a walk and I'll just worship, bro. Yeah. And I'll make myself close.
SPEAKER_01That's it. Yeah. And and and I I mean, think about this. Every time we worship, God is asking us the question what in you need to be killed? Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Abraham, you take Isaac up and he tells his servant, me and the boy are going up to worship. No band, no keyboard, no worship team. No worship team. No speakers. An altar, wood, rope, fire, and a blade. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? And so some things we can carry with us, and other things we got to steward until God provides. This is good, bro. That fire they had to steward, yeah. Until God provided.
SPEAKER_00I I love I love how Peter said, though you have not seen him, uh, you love him. You love him. Right. You love him. And you know, sometimes I'll be in my prayer room and I'll be trying to imagine what it would be like for the Lord to just appear on the other side of my prayer room. Like, like, can you just show up one time? Right. I just want to see. I just want to see. I just want to see. I even take from the knees down.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Just the bottom half.
SPEAKER_00Just the bottom half. He said, but though you have not seen him, you love him. Yeah. Right? And I think about that. We have not physically seen the Lord. You know, sometimes uh like even as we read in 1 Peter, I sometimes I imagine what it had been like for the apostles. They were walking with God in the flesh. They saw his face, they touched his hands, they ate with him, they sat at tables, they they they they sipped wine with him and all the things. And uh what a privilege they had to have been born in a time when when Jesus was physically in the earth. I don't think sometimes we think about that. They were born in a time when Jesus was physically in the earth, and what a beautiful privilege. We have been born in a different era. Oh, we have been I wrote a chapter about this in my book, in chapter seven, it's called For Such a Time as This. Right? We we have been born for such a time as this. And although I was born in an era where where I have not physically seen the Lord, yet I love him. And uh and our ability to be faithful to him having not seen him says something about those of us who are faithful to him now. You know, we have not we have not physically seen him, right? We we we have not seen him with our own eyes, and yet so many of us we love him deeply. And it speaks uh something to the fact that although we have not physically seen him, we we we love him, we sense him, right? We love him, we've seen him. And then, you know, and for those of us who just read past that, we love him. I think that's more than an emotion, right? So I wear two crosses around my neck uh is often, you know. I remember my assistant, my sister JK said to me, like, why you wear two crosses around like you two chains? You know what I'm saying? Like, why do you wear two crosses around your neck? My sister asked me one time, and I said, One cross he carried, and one cross I carry. And it just reminds me that I gotta carry one because he carried one. That's it, man. And the only reason I mentioned that because that is a sign of love. So so follow me, right? Somebody, we we take love and we attach that to just feelings, or we attach that to things that God has done. We feel like if he gives me the job that I want, he loves us, right? If he gives me the spouse that I want, he loves us. If he gives me the ministry that I want, he loves us. If he gives me the car that he wants, and we attach that to all these things. If he does all these things, he loves us. But you know what Paul wrote to the church in Rome? Right? He attaches love to Christ's sacrifice. By this we know that we are love, right? That while we were yet sinners, yes, Christ died for us. His sacrificial death on the cross was the evidence of his love for us. This is very important so that nothing can take that testimony away from you. So if you don't have a job, did he die on the cross for you? Yes. If you don't have the spouse that you want, did he die on the cross for you? Yes. If you don't get the ministry you want, did he die on the cross for you? Yes. If he does not heal your body in this life until the next life, did he die on the cross for you? Yes. So every time we see the cross, that is an example, that is a reminder to you that you are loved. So when you are shedding tears, you remember the cross, I am love. When you're going through hardship, but you remember the cross, I am love. When you're dealing with disappointments and you remember the cross, I am love. When you he's not answering the prayers you want, but you remember the cross, I am love. As long as you remember what Christ did for you on the cross, you can remember that you are loved. And in the same way, like my love for him has to go just beyond words. Oh, I love Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, really? I love him. No. Love is more than just words. Love is love is a demonstration. That's what I'm trying to say to you.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Love is a demonstration. And if we love him, right, if we love him the way he he died for us, right? Because you said when we worship something has to die, man, we'll we'll die for him. Right? He died to make your name known in heaven, and now this life is for you and I to die, that we make his name known in the earth, right? And so we we love him not just out of some empty platitude. We love him because we we we live this life self-sacrificially for him, and that is a demonstration of love. Absolutely. Right, though you have not seen him, you love him, and though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory. This is powerful to him. Though we have not seen him, we still rejoice. What does it mean to rejoice, Tim? What does that mean? When when when Peter says rejoice, what does that mean?
SPEAKER_01Re in front of anything has to do again.
SPEAKER_00Do it again.
SPEAKER_01So if I have to restock my fridge, I have to do it again. Do it again, come on. If I have to refill my gas tank, I have to do it again. Come on. And so I have to do it again, over and over again. Remind myself that in his presence there is fullness of joy and in his right-hand pledge forevermore. But I have to remind myself to rejoice. When I don't feel like it, rejoice. When I'm on the mountaintop, rejoice. When I'm in the valley, rejoice. When I'm in the word of God, rejoice. And when I don't have the words to say, rejoice. And the reason I have to do it again is because it reminds my flesh that this flesh does not lead me, this flesh does not rule me, the spirit of God on the inside of me does. And so often, God will allow everything in your life to fall apart that your hope was attached to, separate from him. And if we're not careful, we will rejoice over things that are temporal when in fact that's happiness.
SPEAKER_00And they're movable. Because happiness is based on circumstances, absolutely rejoices based on the truth of who God said he is.
SPEAKER_01So we'll say we have joy until circumstances changes.
SPEAKER_00Come on.
SPEAKER_01And then that joy is tested because it's not in fact joy, it's happiness. He's talking to people who are being persecuted, and he's telling them to rejoice. Well, what do they have to be joyful about? Open Jesus. Not about the happenings, not about what's happening to you. So we're not rejoicing because you're in pain, we're not rejoicing because you have trials. We're rejoicing because the Savior of of all things created, above and beneath, is with you in the middle of that circumstance, that trial, that tribulation. And that's why we rejoice. We are not alone, and we will never be forsaken.
SPEAKER_00And you know, sometimes it's hard to rejoice in Jesus when he's not enough. I I wanna I want to say this to somebody watching, right? I wanna I want to say this to somebody watching, because I think this is very important. I remember as a young believer when Jesus was not enough, and I thought that I I had to have a big ministry, right? And that would be enough, or I had to have this, and that would be enough, you know. And I've grown to a place where man, I love just being with the Lord, bro. I would rather be in my prayer room than on a platform. I delight in him, I love him, like Peter says. I really desire the day I I I get the chance to see him and I shed tears sometimes. I could I could be sitting in our prayer room and sense his presence and just burst into tears and and just want to be there for the rest of the day. And it's hard to rejoice in Christ when you don't see him like that. If he's not enough, you can't rejoice in him. Right? If if he's not enough, you can't rejoice in what he has done. And it's so powerful. Let me just let me just say that. I will say there. It's so powerful to get there. Cause I think when you get there, it shifts life. And it do it it gives you a type of strength to deal with trials and hardships and setbacks, and and it's it's a very liberating thing, um, and a very powerful thing when Christ is enough. We can rejoice in him. It's like, and and this is not to say we're not thankful for the things he has done. I am I am thankful for my wife. I love her with my whole heart. I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Lena. I love my children. They're teenagers now, so they're like my friends. And we we have a lot of fun. I love my brother Tim. Um I love 2819. That's my covenant family. Uh I love the opportunities I get to preach and all of that and travel the country and around the world. I love our podcast. I'm thankful for the businesses that I have. I'm thankful for my investments. I'm thankful for all the things that God has done. But like that alarm just went off on that fire truck. Let an alarm go off right now in your heart that that that all those things are movable. Yeah. Right? And they will fade. And um, but there is something that is a constant. The one constant we have in our life is the Lord Jesus Christ. Right. He is the one constant. And something would happen in your life. Listen, when he becomes enough, listen to me. Something would shift in your life when Christ becomes enough. When it's not like Christ plus for joy. If you can find joy in just Christ, you will be a dangerous believer. Come on. You will be a powerful believer. You know what happens? Watch this. Pete Pete follow this, follow this analogy. Follow this. Follow this. If if you get to the point where Christ is the source of your joy, then what happens when he just adds stuff to your life? He adds the job, he adds the wife, he adds the husband, he adds the kids, he adds the ministry, he adds that. You know what? Your heart just starts overflowing with so much gratitude, you just be overwhelmed looking left, right, and center. Like you look at your wife, like, gosh, thank you, Lord. You look at your spouse, thank you, Lord. You look at your, you just be overwhelmed. But if he is the cake and everything else, it just becomes the icing, man, man, your heart would just be flourishing all the time with just like so it and and then the strength in that is if you lose any of those things, you go to a funeral, you lose somebody you love, you lose a job, right? You lose a ministry, you make a mistake, you blow up something by accident. But if Christ was at the center of, if he was at the basement of your store, you could still keep coming back. You have a joy that cannot be taken because it's found in a person who is a constant and not in stuff. So, Tim, why don't you take a second, bro, and just speak to the street team and encourage them around rejoicing. That's what Peter's talking about here. Why don't you take a moment, encourage them about rejoicing, speak to somebody right now who maybe all of their joy is in temporal things. Speak to them for just a second, bro.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I want to encourage you, think beyond how you feel. Right? Your feelings lie to you, your emotions lie to you. Rejoicing isn't based upon what's happening, it is the Spirit of God at work on the inside of you. And so do it again. Do it again if you don't feel like it. David said, I will bless the Lord at all times, and his praise shall continually be in my mouth. Rejoice again. Rejoice today, rejoice tonight, rejoice when you don't feel like it. Rejoice when you do feel like it, because those things they may not change the outcome of what happens, but they change you in the middle of it. Because you acknowledge that there is a power, a God that is higher than you, because you are not your God. And I know some of you think that you are, I know some of you call yourself that. You are not. He is. And the word of God says, beside him there is no other. Yeah. And so rejoice in the fact that you are still here. You have not been overtaken by the plans, the attacks, the weapons that have been pointed in your direction from the enemy, that he's still with you and he still has a plan and a purpose for your life. And when you can do that, it quiets the noise, it quiets the voices, it silences the adversaries, and it elevates the voice of God in your life so that you have a voice to follow. This is why it's so important that the voice you listen to determines the destiny you experience. And if you listen to the wrong voice, you'll wind up at the wrong destination. Listen to the voice of God, and he will infuse you with joy. And when he does, rejoice for that because that is a gift only God can give you.
SPEAKER_00And so, Father, in the name of Jesus, Tim and I pray right now for our entire street team. We pray for the men and women who are watching and listening. Though we have not seen your son in the flesh, at least not yet, I pray there'll be an increase, God, of just love for him that is seen in our sacrificial service unto his name and our steadfastness and our faithfulness. I pray right now, God, you would fill us with a joy that is not found in things that are movable, but found in the person of Jesus Christ and the assurance of what we have preserved for us in eternity. And when we are wary and tired and frustrated and going through in all the things, I pray you would give us the grace to rejoice, to rejoice and do it again and again and again. Uh we pray right now for the brother and sister man who has not felt joy in a long time. Maybe they just beat down by life. We pray in this moment right here, they would rejoice. And they would rejoice in where they are, positionally seated with Christ in heavenly places and an inheritance that's coming to them. Uh, I just pray an encouragement over our street team, strength for our street team, and an explosion of love in their hearts for the Lord Jesus Christ, and they will remember that He is our only constant. I ask this over them right now in the mighty and the majestic and the matchless name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
