SPEAKER_02

All right. Hello out there in listening world. Wesley Bray here with Core Scope Insights, where we're always at the core of industry, expanding the scope. Welcome back to another episode. We're going to have a little fun tonight. Our I'll give you a little hint. Our mind might get into gutter, but only about what we're going to be talking about. I've probably already given it away. But hey, we have got Miss Ellie Bolton in the studio tonight with us from uh gutter concepts. And just a delight to know her and a delight to have her in the studio. And um, Miss Ellie, I'm gonna turn it over to you so you can tell everybody how you got into the gutter business.

SPEAKER_01

Well, hi, thank you for having me. The pleasure's all mine. Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it's a pleasure.

SPEAKER_01

My name is Ellie Bolton. Um, I own Gutter Concepts of South Carolina. We are a family-owned and operated business local to Columbia, South Carolina, but we do service the entire state. Um, I got into the business about 11 years ago. My dad was a construction business owner in Columbia for the last 30 plus years. And then the last 10 years, about 2015, he decided that he didn't want to build houses from the ground up anymore. He was getting ready to to retire. And so he started going into gutters. And uh at the time that it started, I was actually doing traveling sales. And I had a young son at the you know, at the at that time. And so my dad was asking me, you know, how can I get you, you know, to to be home more often and and not travel as much. And he said, Well, how about this? How about you come and do sales for me? I was like, I don't know much about gutters, but he said, I can't promise you I can pay you as much as traveling sales, but you know, you'll make a commission and things like that. So I was thinking at the time I was pretty young.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_01

And it, you know, it made me think I'll be closer to home, save on gas, I'll be with my son more, which was very important.

SPEAKER_02

All those things are very important.

SPEAKER_01

That's how I got into the business. And then about a year ago, just shy of a year ago, my dad decided to completely retire. And he was like, All right, girl, you're up. There you go. Hey, hey, that's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

Isn't that awesome, folks? I love to hear family-owned businesses, and it's always a pleasure to have a woman-owned business because um, you know, in so many of our industrial uh professions, you always think of a man, a big brawly man. And I will get you, I think she tries to hide that. She drives one of the biggest Jeeps, guys. Um, we ought to get a picture so we can show you the Jeep she drives because it's a Jeep thing. That's right. She drives, and you've always driven a Jeep. Is that correct?

SPEAKER_01

Always, except for the one forerunner, but love my Jeep.

SPEAKER_02

Love your Jeeps, all right. And she does we'll have to put a picture of that in here. So, but um, Ellie, I'll tell you what, so tell us what's it as a female business owner in the gutter business, what does a typical day work look like for you? Um are you giving quotes? Are you well tell us what you're doing out out there and promoting the business and how you promote it?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so that is a loaded question. Uh every day looks a little bit different, but I used to be strictly in sales. Um, I would call, we had lead generators, we would use Angie's list, Thumbtack, uh long ago as home advisor, then turn to Angie, and then you know thumbtack. And then referrals, referrals, referrals, big bang, word of mouth. So um I would contact people that were referred to me or reach out to these leads that we would get. I would schedule an appointment, I would go out, I would measure their home, and kind of give them the spiel about why gutters are important, which we'll get to. Yes. And um and then try and sell the work. And now my role has obviously changed as going from a salesperson to the owner. Uh I definitely have a lot more responsibility. Sure. But I like to work. So it's kind of a double-edged sword. So uh I enjoy the work, but there's a lot to do. So now my day looks more like I'll go over our work order for the day. I'll call, get materials for that day, uh, give the work order to my husband because we're family-owned and operating business.

SPEAKER_02

And um So you drug him into it now. Yes, awesome.

SPEAKER_01

And also my stepson. So he's as well. We're all family, literally. That's awesome. And so they'll go pick up the materials, they'll drive out to the person's home, uh, install the gutters or whatever service they are getting. And then usually I'm doing paperwork, getting work orders together, um, doing some accounting. There's a lot of that going on. Sure. And I also still call customers, I still go on estimates myself. We do have one other sales rep that goes out and he measures homes as well. And um that's about it. But it doesn't sound like a lot, but that's a lot.

SPEAKER_03

It is, it is.

SPEAKER_01

We also work with uh roofers and contractors and so that's a lot of my time kind of going back and forth with them and and going over pricing. So I think just in the last couple weeks, I've put out about 20 estimates in just about two weeks, which is good for us. That's awesome. Um, especially coming from the slower months, like you know, around Christmas, right and so on.

SPEAKER_02

So, yeah, this is our a busier time of year, and I'm very and if you ever need anybody to haul off those old gutters or things that you don't, I might know somebody.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, I think I might too. That should be great if you would be interested in doing that.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we could talk. Yeah, absolutely. Yes, I we would love to do that for you. We could actually intertwine with that. Yeah, absolutely. Um, so what are the most common misconceptions homeowners have about gutters? I mean, a lot of people in fact, you know, when we bought our home, we didn't have gutters on the front. We still don't, because we were told the way the rain runs on this window and rolls, you know, we didn't, but we did have issues at our house in the back. And we and gutters was the only way to solve it. So I think a lot of people think, oh, I don't need gutters until you it's too late. That's exactly so is that would that be your answer? You didn't use a lot of people don't think they need them until they it's too late. And that was my situation.

SPEAKER_01

People don't think they're that important because maybe uh they had a builder-builder home and it didn't include gutters. So in our state specific to South Carolina, it is not a requirement to have gutters. But let's say you go to Tennessee, you go to New York, it is required. You have to have it. So a lot of people that's actually a big part of our business. The people who move to South Carolina and they go, Where are my gutters? You know, then so they call us and and they say, you know, I I bought this house. There's no gutters here. Well, why not? Like, well, here it's considered an upgrade, not it's not a requirement. And so that is a lot of our business there. But um, people who have not had gutters previously or they buy a home, there's no gutters, they it's really an oversight, it's not something they think about until they have to.

SPEAKER_02

Well, see, I had I had a question that I was gonna ask you, and it was gonna be, you know, how just based on the state of South Carolina, how can gutters be a benefit to a homeowner? But instead of asking you that question, I think I kind of want to take a stab at trying to answer it, and you tell me if I'm right, because in South Carolina, when it's hot and it's humid, we have a lot of mosquitoes, correct? You can both agree on that.

unknown

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I see it as an advantage. Number one, if it if it were a state-driven question of how, you know, why for South Carolina? I would think that would be an answer. You want to get the water as far diverted from your home and living area as possible so that the mosquitoes aren't right there.

SPEAKER_01

For certain. Certainly. And also pulling So am I right?

SPEAKER_02

Did I get that right?

SPEAKER_01

You are right. Um pulling water, uh, especially when it's hot, yeah. It can attract all types of other things, like plants growing out of your gutters, getting them all clogged up. That can cause a lot of issues in itself. Obviously, overflow, backflow, and backflow is not good. It can mess up your fascia, your soffit, go into your home, cause moisture problems, termites. I mean, the list can go on and on. So you definitely want to keep that water away from your house, especially in the hot climate. And we do get a lot of rain here. Uh, we do experience all four seasons, but mostly the spring, summer, you know, and there's a lot of rain that comes with that. And we'll have some really, really heavy rains as well. Sure. And uh that's another thing. When the heavy rains are coming down, they're really rolling off of your home.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

That's really when people notice, oh man, my landscaping is washing away. Why is that? Right. And it's because what you when you have two pitches of a roof meet, for instance, we call that a valley. Right. And that water is just shooting straight down and and either puddling up or it's washing away your mulch or it's splashing back up against your home. Right. Um, that can cause foundation issues, staining on your brick or your vinyl siding, just a whole slew of problems. Sure. Gotta do it all over again.

SPEAKER_02

You also you all do also French drains, is that correct?

SPEAKER_01

We do. So we do French drains. We also do buried corrugated pipe. We do uh corrugated pipe above ground, but if you're not wanting it running through your yard, we do have an option to bury it. We can bury it with a pop-up or bury it and um to run it to a French drain.

SPEAKER_02

Awesome. That's awesome. So you guys do the full guys. If you need gutters, um I think uh from what I'm hearing, they can take care of any issue you have needing it with your gutters, French drains, gutters. Um, and you guys also do different styles of gutters. You want to talk a little bit about that? First of all, let's answer a question. Um, it's probably popular among the homeowners wondering what kind of gutters should they go with. So y'all do seamless and traditional gutters. You want to you're the expert, so I'll let you touch on that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, the the most common gutters would be the case style seamless aluminum gutters. So we have our own gutter machines. We offer five-inch and six-inch options. Um recently we have added to our repertoire. We also have seven and eight-inch gutters that we offer. We can also do half round gutters. Typically, that used to be copper gutters and real copper only, but now we can do half rounds in any color. I'm happy to say that's cool. And we have about 28 colors we can get. Really? Um, oh yeah. And we can also match your soft fit and fascia to it typically. So we also do soft fit and fascia as well.

SPEAKER_02

And so that's good to know because a lot of times that's a problem somebody will have in on self.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah. So great.

SPEAKER_02

Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you on that. That's cool.

SPEAKER_01

Um, a lot of calls for that where their soft air fascia come down due to their gutters being full, and we'll touch on that, I'm sure, later.

SPEAKER_03

Awesome.

SPEAKER_01

But the K-Style aluminum, they're they're rust resistant. That's so important, obviously, because we're dealing with water and a lot of different seasonal changes. So we don't want any rust. That would be completely counterproductive. Um, but that's the most uh common type. Um I I do think people are starting to move away from five-inch. Uh but homes in the neighborhoods where the uh custom homes like mongo homes, so to speak, usually they'll put a gutter maybe over the front door, the front porch and don't gutter the rest of the home. Their fascias are more built for five-inch gutters, and we can accommodate that. A lot of gutter companies don't do that anymore. We can say we can do copper gutters, seamless aluminum, and that's what we would recommend the seamless aluminum. Uh and I forgot the rest of the question. Please edit that out.

SPEAKER_02

SPEAKER_02

All right, folks, welcome back. Hey, we are having a lovely time here in the studio with Miss Ellie Bolton with uh gutter concepts and learning so much about gutters and uh the need for them and why everyone should consider putting gutters on their house. And so, Ellie, that's uh that's kind of what we're gonna talk to. How do homeowners know when it's time to replace or install gutters on their house?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, if you don't have them, you need them.

SPEAKER_02

There you go.

SPEAKER_01

So that's just the the number one straight up answer. If you don't have them and you don't think you need them, you do. Um, if when it's time to replace them, how do you know that? So if you are noticing a lot of water flowing over your gutters, flowing behind your gutters, if you have leaks in your gutters, holes, squirrels, uh, you know, uh any type of debris sticking out, that is when you know you either need a good gutter cleaning and gutter protection, or you might need a quote to have them just inspect it. Just stuff.

SPEAKER_02

Very good stuff. You know, I have seen people that have gutters on their house, and I know this because back when I used to do landscaping and lawn care, you know, we kind of added that service as part of what we did back years ago, 20 gosh, 28 years ago. And um, but what uh and we owned a business called Lawns Unlimited, which we ended up selling because I got I thought, I'm getting older, you know. Um, but so anyway, long story short, you'd pull up at some houses and people would be interested in you cleaning their gutters out, and they would literally have baby pine trees growing in the gutters.

SPEAKER_01

So I make jokes with people all the time. You know, we keep our mind in the gutters so you don't have to.

SPEAKER_02

But literally I love that. Wait, say that again.

SPEAKER_01

We keep our minds in the gutter so you don't have to.

SPEAKER_02

I love that.

SPEAKER_01

But literally, sometimes you really don't want to. Right. The types of things that we find in people's gutters.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I can imagine.

SPEAKER_01

I've seen a lot of you just w you wouldn't even believe it. Um, but nicer, uh more appropriate things would be um trees growing out of them, maybe a tennis ball. We have found many other items there. Oh yeah. So don't have your gutters cleaned regularly.

SPEAKER_02

And how how often would you say as regularly? I mean, I guess this would pretty was it kind of much nationwide, or would you say regionally, South Carolina? I mean, uh for where we are, let's uh let's do I mean how often do you recommend someone clean their gutters?

SPEAKER_01

So that's a really good question. So if you do not have gutter guard or some type of leaf protection, then I would say depending on uh how many trees you have around, or if you live in a heavily wooded area, sure. You would certainly need to clean them out at least quarterly. At the very least. Um but if you were in a heavily wooded area, I would recommend going ahead and getting gutter protection. I think people have a misconception that gutter protection is very expensive. And with some companies it is. Um luckily we are a family-owned and operated business, so we have a lower overhead and our prices are usually pretty competitive. But uh gutter protection is so underestimated with what it can do. And by the time you pay for a year or two's worth of gutter cleanings, you could have paid for that gutter guard twice over, probably.

SPEAKER_02

And I'm see, I'm sure you see a lot of homeowners that just neglect the fact that they've got the gutters. Right. And then they'll you'll see, and and this is probably, and I'm only imagining we don't have a lot of snow and ice storms here in South Carolina. But when we do, I've seen them here be, you know, a coup a few times. I can count it on one hand, but you know, I guess that actually opens the floodgates for business because when it does happen, even ice and icicles and snow, the weight of snow in the gutters can, even if you have new gutters, I mean, you know, you need to get your gutters checked after a winter storm, is what I'm trying to get to.

SPEAKER_01

For sure. And and that's another thing. Um with gutter guard, it helps protect debris from getting in your gutters because, like you mentioned, the weight. Sure. When you have gutters that are packed full of debris, that weight can not only pull your gutters down, but then it can pull your fascia down as well, sometimes even your soffit. And we don't want that because then you expose your rafter tails, which is part of your roof, uh, to maybe rot or get critters in there, and you certainly don't want that problem. But um yeah, we actually just had a very rare snow occurring. We actually had several calls where people's gutters had fallen at least partially and a piece of their fascia was hanging down. I mean, I probably have twenty-five photos on my phone of different homes where like our gutter felt what happened. She's the weight it wasn't. It's the weight. It's the weight. And also it may not have been properly installed. So that's another thing. Uh the in the installation, you need to make sure. Well, I know it'd be hard to tell if it's correct as a homeowner, but you want to make sure that you go with a a company find a company that has been around long enough or has a warranty. You don't want the headlight warranty. Like when their headlights leave, so does their warranty. Sure. Right. I love that. Good analogy.

SPEAKER_02

Good analogy. And um, you know, that leads me. Uh I saw something, you know, the cost of a poor decision or the cost of going with some. I think I shared it one morning with our group. You know, um, you know, it can linger long after the money's spent. So absolutely but you guys offer quality work, quality service, and tell us a little bit out there about the warranty because that's something that really um, you know, a lot of companies after after they've gone, the trucks left, the products installed, you know, they don't have they don't really, you know, service their their customers, but you guys offer your customers a warranty. So why don't you touch on that and talk about kind of warranties you offer?

SPEAKER_01

So our company offers a five-year craftsmanship warranty. So that means after we install it, up to five years, you can call us and honestly probably if you call us later than that, we'll still probably come out and help you. Sure. But you know, we offer a five-year craftsmanship warranty, which means if you have a gutter uh come loose, a screw come out, something hanging funny, or the water's overflowing in a weird place, we'll come out and take care of that for you free of charge. Um, I think that that's really important to build relationships with your customers, keep them happy, keep them protected, keep their home protected. Um their home is one of their biggest investments, if not their biggest investment. And as a family company, we want other families to stay protected.

SPEAKER_02

So, what should a homeowner look for when hiring someone to install their gutters?

SPEAKER_01

They are gonna want to look for somebody who has been around for a while. You don't want the taillight warranty. Right. When the taillights are gone, so it's a warranty.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_01

You want somebody uh always look at reviews too. I think reviews are important and even g good or great gutter companies, you might have the one or two that's not so favorable, but that's with any business. But really, you know, do some research, ask around. I think that's important. People who have been established at and have a good reputation.

SPEAKER_02

Concepts out there, folks, has a great reputation. Um, a lot of uh a lot of my friends have used our services and um have been very satisfied with them. I actually had gutters on the back of my house before I knew you, or otherwise you would have been doing my gutters because I've heard of the quality work you do and the craftsmanship and what you guys offer and the different styles. So and the way you take care of your customers, it it's shown in the way you do business. So it's a pleasure to have you on the show tonight and talk about that. So uh let me go here. What do you see any other technologies coming out? I mean, some industries you think you don't you don't really think about the technology changing much, but you know, it wasn't until a few years ago we had gutter guards. Is there any other things that are coming out? This is kind of a two-part question. Any other things that you see on the horizon in the gutter business? And number two, um, you know, how can listeners get in uh get in touch with you? I want to get over that and the topic. So we'll get into that uh uh maybe in our next segment in closing. But definitely want to put the information out there to use where our listeners can get in touch with you. But let's go back to no question number one. Sometimes I get ahead of myself. Um, yeah, so let let's go back uh to that. What do you see any new trends coming in the gutter industry or anything?

SPEAKER_01

So that's a a really good question, and it's not something I've really thought too much about, but I will say in the 11 years that I've been doing this, uh there have been several changes that I've seen. Um obviously when we started there were more five-inch gutter demand. Now we're migrating more into six-inch gutters at least. Like I said I mentioned earlier, most gutter companies don't even offer five inch anymore, but we do. And um, so that's something the size of the homes are changing, uh, the weather weather and climate is always changing. Gutter materials are always getting more expensive. Uh but I I mentioned also earlier that five and six inch stainless aluminum gutter was probably the most common. Uh of course you could go to Lowe's and maybe get the plastic stuff, but you don't want that because there's no warranty there. And um anyway, I think that for us personally, recently we've had uh come into where we could have an option to offer seven inch and eight-inch gutters. So I think there's always something on the horizon.

SPEAKER_02

There's not that much of a cost difference, really, when you look apples to apples, is there? It's it's comparable. It's is it well it it it depends.

SPEAKER_01

So the seven and eight-inch gutters for if you were going residential, that would be more for a decorative look. Something very specific. We wouldn't recommend that to just your average homeowner.

SPEAKER_02

All right, folks, we're continuing to get educated here with Miss Ellie in the uh studio tonight. Always a pleasure having her here. SPEAKER_02

You all take all the types of payment, correct? Check, credit card, and do y'all also offer financing?

SPEAKER_01

We do not offer financing because we are a small family and our our prices really are so competitive.

SPEAKER_02

Make it affordable.

SPEAKER_01

It is a f yeah. So we do not offer financing. However, I don't think you're gonna need it.

SPEAKER_02

Gotcha. That's great. That's great. So folks, uh, just you know, in in uh talking with uh Ellie, I can tell you how passionate she is about uh the service they provide and what kind of industry is. And basically, too, there's a lot of pride in the fact that she took over the business from her father who got this started and put a lot of, you know, as a family-owned business myself with my my son and I, you know, the blood, sweat and tears that you put into a family business. So uh think about that before you go out and get a chain or some big company that's, you know, a chain or something to do the work for you. Think about the work that these people, local companies, are doing. They're putting food on their tables, they're putting shoes on their kids' feet, they're paying their kids tuition, they're paying for things in school. So think about it before you go out and hire someone else and consider a local company uh run by a family that really cares and really has a desire to please you as a as a client and make sure that your needs are taken care of. So a lot of things all we think about when we are looking for a service or a product or whatever is we think about price. Not everything is driven on price. There's a lot that factors in that's not always considered when you go to hire that person. So, but hey, there she just sat here and said you would, you know, financing is not available, but why would you need it when their prices are so affordable and you're doing with somebody that, hey, when you got a problem or you have an issue in a within a five-year warranty, which is a great warranty on gutters these days, so when you need them, they're right here, local, so they can come and take care of your needs. And I know that Ellie and her crew would do just that.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. And if I may just piggyback off of something you were saying about my dad, how he started the company. I do want to give a shout out to him because first of all, without God, none of the this would be possible. Amen to that my father. Um, my dad is just my absolute hero. And um I I've been so blessed to have my dad as my dad. He is a very hardworking man, but he surely has worked so hard to in everything that he's done, but in building this company, and from the beginning he did tell me, he said, you know, I'm building this for you in Wilder, who's my son. And um he said, I'm building this for you one day that you know you're gonna take over this. And and he meant it, and he did. My daddy he he really poured a lot into this, and so when he told me, All right, girl, you're up, I was like, Okay, I was a little nervous because it's it's big shoes to fill. Big shoes, absolutely. I I I want to make him proud, and I hope I'm doing that, but I did just want to give a shout out. My dad, his name is Greg Bolton, and he is just an amazing guy. And if you know him, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Well, Greg, out there, you have done an amazing job with your daughter as well, coming to know her in business and the type of service, and the way she talks about you with the pride she has, you can only be pleased, and I'm certain you are as a father myself, with my son actually doing the editing for our podcast as we speak and go through this. So shout out, shout out to Preston Bray over here. My son does a phenomenal job. This show wouldn't be what it is without him. And I gotta throw a show. Ah, yes, absolutely. He's gonna make he makes us all look good, you know. Um, so uh, you know, uh, but anyway, uh shout out to Preston. And every now and then, you know, I forget about it sometimes to throw a shout out to him, but I couldn't do what I do without him. And he's certainly my support mechanism, and uh he keeps things going. So a big shout out. Um, he doesn't like to be on camera, otherwise I'd turn the camera on him. One one night I'm gonna get him, folks. One night I'm gonna set a camera over here and we're just gonna get him on camera. But uh he does a great job, but uh I can't think of enough. You edit it out. He says he'll edit it out. Okay, yes. Okay, perfect. So, all right, folks. Hey, I'm gonna move over here to the table with Miss Ellie, and um we're going to uh close out tonight's show as we always do with our prize giveaway, and we're going to let Miss Ellie, since she's our guest, she gets to spin the wheel, and then she gets to churn up a winner. So we'll be right back. All right, and hey, we're back. Well, we were just having some fun here during the break. Um, but uh anyway, we're back, folks. Thank y'all for staying tuned. Hey, go hit that like button, subscribe so that your name can go where at Ellie and the prize wheel, right? Absolutely. So, hey, we're getting ready to spin the wheel. It's gotta go around once. She's been made aware of the rules, so she can't mess this up, folks. So Ellie, give us a spin. All right, all right. That's a good spin. Good spin, good spin. What do we got here? A fifty dollar gift card to bone fish grill. All right.

SPEAKER_03

So there you go.

SPEAKER_02

Let's see who's gonna win a $50 gift card to bone fish grill. So now, Ellie, we move this to the front, and it's all up to you, drum roll, and you give it a spin, and we're gonna pull out a lucky winner.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Now I just open it.

SPEAKER_02

Now you just gotta open it and pull out just one. You can't have multiples. You gotta make sure it's just one. We're gonna keep our fingers crossed. We want you to win out there in the TV world. Listening world, I should say.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, are you ready? Can I read it?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, you can.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, the lucky winner is Wayne Castle with East Coast Medal.

SPEAKER_02
