Welcome to the Mid Majors podcast where the real hoop talk happens unfiltered and unapologetic. I am one of your hosts, Takara, and with me I got my girl Courtney, and we are the Mid Majors. Woo child. We've been freezing here in Georgia. And we've been freezing here in Cincy. Okay. Honey, it's been freezing. I've had to bring out my big jacket. Big jacket. Big jacket. Girl, you would need a big coat. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I couldn't make it. A big jacket. I would love to wear a big jacket.
SPEAKER_00I can't hand I can't do that.
SPEAKER_01I can't hear it. I can't do this all the way like it's like past my knees. Oh, yeah. It damn near covers my whole body.
SPEAKER_00Oh Jesus. No. No, no, thanks. Um, but anywho, y'all, it ain't really been this week has been kind of like quiet for real, for real. Um LSU put a little whooping on Florida the other day, which I had to go rewatch the game. Courtney ended up watching it. What'd you think? So I only watched the first half. I turned it off after that.
SPEAKER_01But I thought, I mean, I thought LSU looked great, bro. I love Jada.
SPEAKER_00Me too.
SPEAKER_01She she she she's my favorite player on that team. I I like Jada. I I'm gonna say this right now that Jada will be the reason LSU wins another championship. Hands down. Like, hands down. Like she just has so much poise about her. Um she doesn't get flustered, she runs the offense, she takes the pressure. Like, she just controls the game. I just I just love watching her play. I'm I'm happy that she is a starter. Yeah. Um I'm happy that she's getting like more minutes because I think that's key for this team, just to have somebody to, you know, I the the right word is not puppet master, obviously, but someone that can control the game. Yeah. And control her team and tell them when to go and slow down or whatever the case may be. And granted, she's just a sophomore, but I I I just feel like the older she gets and the more experienced she gets, man, I just feel like they could be great, especially with the freshmen that they have now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01If they can keep everybody. If they can keep everybody, but they do have a good core. And I just I like you said um a couple shows ago, I hope they do stay. Um I thought, you know, I I wish they didn't turn the ball over so much the the first half. Um, I think they ended up with 15 turnovers, and I bet you half of those were in the first half, and I'm talking about just flat out throwing it out of bounds or just throwing it to the other person. Yes, crazy. Um and then I think that was a point with Jada. The other one was with the turnovers, and my last point is that I just I I want Michaela to I just want her to play as well and take over the game and be that dominant scorer for that team. Although I understand it was like when you look at this, the stats, it was a very well-covered game by all the players, right? Yeah. It looks really great on paper, but you know, like I would just like to see Michaela turn it on more. At half, she had only took five shots. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? And I just don't think that's acceptable for the type of scorer that she is to only take five shots. And then ended the game with only nine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know what I mean? Like, and I think one of the um the announcers actually said it, like, you know, they mentioned something about like, you know, like she could get 30 at any given night, which is true, because we've said that, right? Like we said she could do that easily. Any anything like, but then the announcer uh mentioned, like, you know, that uh Moki kind of talked about team chemistry and like getting that down and getting the flow of the game together, which I understand. Um, and then says something about, you know, like, but you know, we're gonna need you coming up, right? Like you got the SEC tournament coming up, you got Marsh Madness coming up. So, like, that's when we're really gonna need you. Um, do I think she's a player that can turn it on like that when asked? Absolutely. Um, but it's just like, man, I would just like to see some of that now, right? Like, let's let's work on that now and see what the flow of the game looks like and and the flow of your teammates around you. Um, how does that go? You know what I mean? Oh, yeah. My last point is that Jada locked up Liv. Oh man. She did play good defense. She locked her up. She did play good defense. She had great defense. So you're talking about a point guard that plays, that can play on both sides of the floor. She ended up with like 20 points, right? Yeah. 20 points. Um, I don't know how many assists she had. Yeah, two assists. Two assists. But I mean, well, you can't beat that. That's that's amazing. I mean, I I I I I like where LSU was going.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I like where LSU is. You know, they had like a level of intensity. Like good intensity. I felt like they all were playing defense. I tell you who I like the post we're posting. I felt like the post did good. Amaya joyner had some pep in her step this game. I she had 14 and 10, and it looked like 14 and 10. It looked like she went hard. And it's like, like I said, for me, it's always the little things. Like her just getting, if you get your hand on an offensive rebound, you're not supposed to do that anyway. The rebound should be secured. Like her and Grace Knock just getting their hand on a ball in the offensive, you know, you know what I'm saying? An offensive rebound. Um, Kate, Kate looked good. Kate was being aggressive, like she didn't score a lot, but I felt like she came in and gave good men. If she had 10 rebounds, she was being aggressive. Like you know what I'm saying? So I thought that was great. Um, and then Amaya Jordan, she had eight offensive rebounds. That's amazing. They had 20 offensive rebounds as a team.
unknownPull it up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's amazing. And I mean, and that's just night and day from like what when the SEC tournament started, right? And that was the one thing we hold in on. It's just like, y'all gotta rebound. If y'all not rebounding, y'all definitely don't stand a chance. So it's it's good to see that they're like turning that around.
SPEAKER_00For sure. For sure. They they out rebound in Florida 48 to 28. Yeah. So rebound is always key. If you can out rebound a team, like that's always gonna be gonna be key. But um, y'all, let's go ahead and get into some shits. Let's get into some shits, guys. Um so I follow Cass on Instagram. I think we both might. Yeah. And um Coach Yo went ahead and commented on her stuff just because she had made a comment and she had talked about, you know, Cody McMahon having a bad game. Which we had mentioned that game too. I think we might have been on a live, but I think we were just on the live. She couldn't buy a basket. Because Cody McMahon's not one person who like we can never like her effort is always there.
SPEAKER_01Oh, heck yeah. Like, tough effort heart. That's always that's never been questioned. Yeah, but hold on, let's go back to what what did Coach Yo say though?
SPEAKER_00Okay, hold on, y'all. Let me Oh, I got it.
SPEAKER_01You want me to read it?
SPEAKER_00You got it, you get it, because I'm let me find it, honey. I take a thousand pictures today.
SPEAKER_01No, it's okay. Um, so Coach Yo um have responded to Cassie saying, Cassie, while her performance today is true, how do you leave out that this kid is having a career best season? She had an off game. What's the point of this? You have not made mention of Cody or us all year, and we've done some really cool things so far. Do you want to go?
SPEAKER_00Um, so how I see it, I see it like I don't see it as a bad thing, like I she shouldn't have said that or she shouldn't have commented. One, I feel like for me, I'm just also at a point in my life where I'm not addressing everything and I'm not addressing everyone, period. So, like, you know, maybe I get where she's coming from, but I don't really see it as like far as an insult. Baby just like, maybe just like talk about us. But in the end of the day, like Cass said, like, I ain't really watch O Mess like that. Which I get it. Shit, it's hard to watch all these games. Yeah. I be prioritizing like the ones I know people are watching, the ones that people want to see. I get it. Right. Especially when you're talking about an algorithm. In the day, when you on social media, everything's an algorithm, everything's a headline, everything's an analytic. I mean, especially with us doing YouTube. So I get that. Absolutely. Um, I think I would have liked more of, but you know me, I like more of using things for motivation. I would have liked more of maybe like her and Cody the type of conversation. Like, hey Cody, see this? They're talking about you having a bad game. You know what I'm saying? Which it was just a bad game. But I think it's just like, who was they playing? They were playing against Georgia. She had a bad game. So it's like we pointed it out. We always point out people have a bad game. So for to me, it was just kind of like, okay, whatever. But um, I didn't see what yo said as far as like an insult. You know what I'm saying? I think maybe just like just talk about us more. Shit. You get what I'm saying? To me. That's how I saw it. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01Like, yeah. I didn't I didn't look at it like that. Like from, I guess, Coach Yo's perspective. I mean, I had to go back and look at the original video that she was talking about. Yeah. And I don't think Cassie said anything wrong. Yeah. She didn't say she didn't say anything bad about Cody. Like, she had a bad game. That's true. That's a fact. She had a bad game. And you had just did an interview saying that you want more coverage of old miss. You know what I mean? It just so happened that y'all played. You get what I'm saying? So now she's talking about it. Like, obviously, the timing of it wasn't bad, but I don't think anything Cassie said in that video was false. Um nor was she like super hard or or critical like on Cody, unless there's another video somewhere that I didn't see. But the one that I saw, I I didn't think she said anything bad. I think it was fact. Like Cody did have a bad game. I don't think she said anything about Cody personally or her overall game. She was just talking about that specific game. Um, I I I and I that's why I don't understand the comment. That's all I have to say. I don't I don't understand it.
SPEAKER_00You know what I chuck it to? Sometimes you can just catch people at the wrong time. That's true. Like, if shit with y'all who be over here talking shit on TikTok, one day y'all might catch me at the wrong time. A couple of you have. You might catch me on the wrong day. It ain't got nothing to do with you. You know what I'm saying? It could they could have had a uh, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01Like, ain't been responding to nothing for a little time. And you know what today, I got it.
SPEAKER_00You know what, today? I got today.
SPEAKER_01Okay, you're right, because y'all had time. She had time. It just wasn't the right post to have time.
SPEAKER_00They ain't had no game. They gang postponed. They had a little break since my time. You can just, yeah. It was like, to me, it was just kind of like, I mean, she could have said worse things for you to come comment about. But I appreciate your comment. I appreciate your engagement. And like, since then, I don't even read the comments like that. So, you know, I ain't no way I missed it. But um, to that point though, I think it goes to show. Can you talk about Candace Parker? About how in the same video has she tied into what Candace Parker had to say, and I'll get into my next point.
SPEAKER_01So Cassia also posted an article that she did um about Candace Parker and Gino Oriema. I didn't get a chance to read an article, but if I the overall assumption is that Candace Parker and Gino have beef. All back from Pat Summit days, all that, you know, real old school beef. Yeah. Um, but anyway, Candace uh DM'Cassie, and from what I got about is that she didn't go into great detail about what all was in the message, but the point that she was trying to make was that if we want women's basketball to be taken seriously, they have to be subjected to the same criticisms that men's basketball and the NBA get. She mentioned that, like, you know, um, you know, women's basketball has always been in this cookie-cutter like image and what you can say and what you can't say. Um, but in order for us to keep taking the WNBA and women's basketball to the next level, they have to be open to criticism. You know what I mean? And she mentioned, like, you know, inside the NBA and you know, some ESPN people when they talk about men's basketball or just men's sports in general, um, and we even talked about this as like, you know, you don't see these type of, you don't really see these type of things on the men's side, some of the comments that we get in terms of when we're criticizing like women's basketball. So to me, what I got from it, from what Candace Parker said to her was just like, good job, keep moving the needle forward. You know, we might not, we might not, we might not agree on, you know, a certain player or a certain game, and our opinions might be different and our tone might be different or whatever the case may be. But thank you for moving the pin forward and sharing your opinion. You know what I mean? Because that's what it's gonna take. So, and I absolutely agree with Candace because you said that too.
SPEAKER_00I say it all the time. So until we started doing this show, I don't think I realized how much or how bad the fans were so sensitive when it comes to women's basketball. I guess because like maybe like I'm not a I mean, I'll be following, I'll be honest. Like, I'll be following the ghetto pages. It'd be, I'd be on the comments I'll be reading through, it'd be the shade room. You know what I'm saying? I'd be I'll be the ghetto, I'll be with the ghetto stuff. You know what I'm saying? So it's like what this has really shined a light when we start doing this and people, you know, get mad at us or call us haters. It's like not everybody's hating on people. Like, right. It a lot of the time, it's just like when Caitlin, well not when Caitlin Clark, um, especially when she, you know, when but I take the people's problem with Candace, they say Candace doesn't have the same energy when it comes to talking about Caitlin Clark. Is what that be people's problem with Candace Um as far as criticism. You know what I'm saying? But it's like sometimes I think that people get mad because you people ain't saying what you want them to say. I mean, yeah. You know what I'm saying? So I think with that, but it's just like I didn't realize just how sensitive these fans were and just how like everybody just be all in their feelings. Like, but like I said, it but it's all good. It's always cool. They can talk about everybody else, they can talk about, they can call people MAGA Mulky, they can call them Kim Mulky, whatever they want to call her, talk about how she don't develop her butt. But as soon as you talk about they faves, they in a frenzy. Yeah, it doesn't work that way. But I think for us, for us, or just people in general to push the needle, it's going to have to be both. You get what I'm saying? And it's like, that's why I'm thankful for all of y'all who be commenting and telling us. It's like one dude the other day about south kind of like he said, man, y'all was brutal. Y'all, I love y'all that held back. Boom, ten dollars. You get what I'm saying? Yeah, no, really. I love the fact that people appreciate that. And I feel like for the most part, when it comes to art fans and our fan base, now I feel like now we are getting people who appreciate the the what it is and then what it ain't. You know what I'm saying? Like, facts, yeah, but because it's like it'd be different.
SPEAKER_01I'm sorry to cut you off, but I'm just gonna but also like actually found our like a core group of people that actually know basketball and watch basketball. You know what I mean? Like, because I had mentioned it before how you know it's been some comments where people have commented. I'm like, I didn't even think about that. That's a great thing. Facts. Great things. We still we we learn for y'all. We learn for y'all. You know what I'm saying? Like, um, or they'd be like, you know, they'll give us some stats on somebody that we didn't know, you know what I mean, or correct us on some stuff that we we didn't know. And that's that's fine. We're all up here. Um listen, we learning, y'all learning. I I appreciate that.
SPEAKER_00We never started this shit to say we knew everything. And we don't be in the comments saying that we knew everything either. And I don't want to know everything, honey. Educate me, please.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. But hey, I'm gonna toot our own horn, but I'm I guess I'll toot mine, not yours. But I hadn't, like I said, like before this podcast, I hadn't been around the game of basketball in a long time. You know what I mean? Um, so when we started, I felt just a little rusty. Me too. You know what I'm saying? But me too. Bitch, I'm on that bike now.
SPEAKER_00Uh-huh. I'm rolling.
SPEAKER_01Like it's like riding the bike. Period. That's all it is.
SPEAKER_00Same. So, like for me, I had to change how I like watch basketball, period. Because like I said, I'm a sports better. Y'all know the parlays be parlaying over here, okay? I've had to change my lens of how I watch the game because I literally have just been watching for points for the last three, four years. I ain't been looking at strategy, I ain't been looking at that's a bad shot. I've really had to like, okay, focus on what I'm looking at now to do this. If that makes sense. Yeah. But it's like, people gotta just really like legit get a grip. Like, get a grip. It's like, it just, and it's thinking about, and that's the thing about it, and it's just like if things don't change as far as because people's not talking about us. Us meaning women's basketball. You know what I'm saying? I include myself in that too, because you know, I'm a women's basketball fan, I played women's basketball, I played college. People ain't talking about us, and that's why a reason too, like, I wanted to get started because I knew I was gonna come bring the shits and I was come tell the truth. Like, you either like me or you don't. I know I'm not for I'm not for you. If I'm not for everybody, I'm not for everybody. That just is what it is. You don't have to watch. You can literally press play, you don't like it for five minutes, go to the next one, go hear, go hear the rah-rah, go hear the oh, she worked, she worked so hard. Absolutely. You know what I'm saying? Go. If you want to hear that, go hear that. Absolutely. So it's like, that's one thing I even noticed when I start doing this show. Like, damn, like, people don't criticize for real. They go all the way. Think about it. We really ain't got no. Think about it. You got Shaq, you got Ernie, you got Kenny, and you got Chuck. They go in. We don't have that go in. You get what I'm saying? Charles go in.
unknownHe goes in.
SPEAKER_00Like Shaq go in too. Shaq goes in. It's like, it's so funny because I had watched um Shaq's son had did an interview with him on a podcast, and they asked him who's the worst basketball players, and he said name. Yeah. And I'm gonna tell you why. Why? You get what I'm saying? It's like, it just is what it's a straight face. I'm dead. Straight face. And the people he said, I'm like, you asked me. He called the people bumps. I answered it. Yeah. Yeah, you get what I'm saying? I feel like it's always just the how great people are. And that's not how life works. You get what I'm saying? Because when it comes to a point, especially you coming from high school to college, you're not gonna hear how great you are every day, honey.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00You're not.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00You're not at all. Like, I can think about times when, shoot, I was telling somebody yesterday, because we had a whole conversation about kids not working hard. I was telling somebody the other day, shit, I remember my coach told me I I think I might have dropped 25 points, something like that, in a college game. My coach looked at me and was like, Take all, I ain't impressed with that damn performance. And I'm like, shit, you know what I'm saying? Like, if that's not how life works. Like, you're gonna get constructive criticism every single day. You know what I'm saying? Like, yeah, that's just how it goes. But absolutely, yeah. I ain't think I think Candace Parker's absolutely right. I think for the most part, Candace Parker, the only one who cool to take the flak or cool to take whatever. And that's why her ass was on that platform with the men.
SPEAKER_01You get what I'm saying? Absolutely, yeah. That's a great point to make. Great point. I mean, the end of at the end of the day, I feel like the reason why Coach Yo, the reason why she responded, this is my opinion. Okay. The reason why she responded, I think, is to put Ole Miss on the map. Like, as far as like, because let's be honest, like right now, like, in terms of like women's basketball and stuff like that, I'll be honest, I feel like people people love the talent that's in women basketball women's basketball right now, but people like the drama too. Facts. You get what I'm saying? Um, they like the I feel like women's basketball right now has some of the best personalities. Facts. Um we're seeing the personalities. Yeah, seeing the personalities, and you see them in commercials, and you're seeing them on socials, and you're seeing them in music videos and mentioning music videos. It's like, to be honest, like her her even commenting, look at us talking about Ole Miss right now. Facts. Right? Facts. Look at Cassie making another post about Ole Miss right now, right? Like so the so the more you put your, and that's what I'm saying, the more you put your school out there, whether it's like bad plus publicity, good publicity, obviously you want it to be good publicity, but do I think this was a little bit staged? Yes, um, yes, like she's grown as hell, she's grown as hell. It's no way she took the time to go on her page to to comment this. Like facts to me, like it was definitely staged, but look at us talking about it. And that's in in the day of NIL and the transfer portal and all those things, you gotta be popping, and you know what?
SPEAKER_00And it could be the person, it could be a recruit who saw that and was like, my coach gonna stand up for me on social media.
SPEAKER_01That could mean something to someone, exactly. You know what I mean? Like it's all it's it's a game, and they gotta play it, or you're gonna get left.
SPEAKER_00Because you know what's so crazy, even with like people who talk about just um NIL, and somebody asked us, we have talked about NIL plenty of times before. We me and Courtney graduated in 2012, y'all. NIL was not a thing. I've had to pay money back to the program from taking some shit. You know what I'm saying? Like back in our day, I don't think people understand. And Courtney, you can tell me about your experience. Like, people don't get like for me, this younger generation, I love this younger generation. Like, Angel Reese, I love this social media uh generation as far as like them having lives. People don't understand. We could not have lives, bruh. Yeah, it had to be ball, and that's it. And that's it. If it wasn't basketball, you wasn't focused. You wasn't you weren't allowed to do anything else. Yeah, you weren't allowed, even like the little beautiful Bala Page, they be on their bikinis and shit. Do you know how quick your ass would have been kicked off the team to do some stuff like
SPEAKER_01That when we came up, you couldn't have in some coaches, you would have to give them your socials.
unknownOh!
SPEAKER_01And you had to be friends with the school and friends with the program and all these things. You couldn't block them. You couldn't do any of that.
SPEAKER_00See, when I had when we first we was coming up, that was when Wilson ain't first got popping. Twitter. Twitter. Yeah, yeah. And I used I was a Twitter, I was a Twitter assassin.
SPEAKER_01I was a Twitter assassin too, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I could post something on there, and it'd be something like, okay, we finna turn up this weekend. And next thing I know, here I am in the damn office. All you do is post about how you and your teammates gonna get drunk on the weekend.
SPEAKER_01That'd be hilarious. I ain't post nothing like that.
SPEAKER_00I just feel we finna we finna we finna have a good time this weekend. How do you know what that was? But it's a crazy as hell to girl. That's crazy as shit. What? Did I say it then or did I got in trouble? No, that you just like, we about to get fucked up. I didn't say that. I said we was finna have a good time. Oh, we know what that is. You don't know what that could have been.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you don't know what that could have been. You assume. But still, like the the leash that we had on us. That's that's the point. It's the leash.
SPEAKER_00We couldn't, we were scared to do every everything. We couldn't do anything. So it's like seeing just the kids now be on vacation in the summer, enjoying their summer, enjoying their boyfriend. Having a life outside of basketball. I was at more head with it.
SPEAKER_01Every summer I was at. I was um I was at school in the summer. It is, you know, I think I think it's for me. Um I I love that they're getting paid as well, too. Um, the adjustment from college to the real world is um hard in itself for any people still struggle or student athlete or whatever the case may be. But if you can put a little something in your pocket before you before you get out there, yeah, like you're you're already ahead of the game. I think in terms of NIL, I think sometimes the whole thing is I think it's I think there it it's it's a culture. Like some some some teams are very like so when I think of LSU, like to me, in terms of their NIL and stuff like that, they're they're loud with it. And I don't mean that in a bad way. Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_00But we getting money over here.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's a it's a vibe that's over there that's just like, yeah, like you can play basketball and get a bag over here. Facts. You know what I'm saying? Like if that's the vibe you're on. Parents, if that's the vibe you're on, like you know what I'm saying? Like, this is where you want to be. But then you have the other end of the spectrum, like like a Don.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right? Where it's like, yeah, you're gonna get the bag, but we got some rules over here. You just have to go. And we get we got business to take care of. Yeah, we got business to take care of. Like, I don't mind you getting your bag, I don't mind you going on vacation, you know what I mean, like that. But like, we not about to, you ain't about to be just, you know, posting it all willy-nilly on on IG and whatever the case may be.
SPEAKER_00I feel like with them, it's like a happy medium.
SPEAKER_01It's a happy medium. It's a happy medium. Yes, and I and that's what I mean. I mean that the best way possible.
SPEAKER_00No, because me, for me, y'all can I'm holding, and y'all can take that shit however the hell y'all want to take it. You're gonna take it how you wanna take it in the same way. That's facts. I mean, that's you don't give a shit.
SPEAKER_01That's facts. Um, but I always say like Don is the type of coach that Don is, like, that's the type of coach that I would want like my kids to be under. Gotcha. Because like you're you're teaching them, like, and and and Kim could be teaching them the same stuff. I'm not saying that they not. I'm just saying it's it's in terms of vibe and culture, right? Yeah. Um, but personally, like, that's what I want. I don't mean that's what my kids will want, right? Yeah, but if I'm looking at it from that perspective, it's just like, you know, Dawn's a little bit more like, you know, um, she she had she does have like some type of reins or leash on. You ain't about to just be out here throwing up signs and pictures and think about what's the name? All types of stuff. I mean, look at look at Gino.
SPEAKER_00Gino is a tight, it's a tight.
SPEAKER_01You don't, yeah. And I I like that because I feel like it, because that is the real world. You know what I'm saying? Especially when you get a job. When you exactly, when you get a job, you just can't say whatever you want to say. You could just can't do what you want to do all the time. Like, you know what I'm saying? You think you can because you think you're 21 and you know, you ain't there. But there are some things you can and cannot do. Um, and I guess this generation would say, Well, I'm just gonna get another job. Well, you go for it and go get another one. And you can keep bouncing and bouncing and bouncing. And I hope you're saving up for that 401k when you get 80 and you ain't got the stuff to retire, but you keep bouncing. But you know, that I think it's just in terms of vibe, right? Yeah. I think in general, NIO is great. Um, I just think in terms of how it's done, I think honestly, that's what people have more of a problem with personally. Um also, I'm so sorry. No, I'm so sorry. Because I didn't want to cut you off. But I also say that to say, again, I still don't feel like we hear a lot of this this stuff on the men's side, and that's just in sports in general. You get what I'm saying? That could be football, that can be basketball, or whatever the case. And they driving Lambilles, they driving, you know, y'all got G-League players coming back to play. You know, y'all got 28-year-olds and 27-year-olds playing over there. So clearly, y'all don't care that that much. You know what I mean? Like, NIL is great. You know what I mean? So you don't hear a lot of comments. I mean, you do, but I just feel like with the girls, like, yeah, I think the first person that comes to mind is Angel. You know what I mean? Like, they hated her that personality. Um they hated, they hated that, right? But it's just like, you know, man, how could this black girl just be so like, you know, loud and disrespectful and she's getting all of this money? Like, she should just come in and play basketball. You know what I mean? Shut up. And it's just like, bro, like the men been doing that all the time. What did Monica say? You jump in some guy's face, you talk smack, and you get a pat on your ass. But because I'm a female, I get told to calm down and act like a lady.
SPEAKER_00Period. You know, and it's so funny when we talk about just angels. Shut up the angels. Listen, I be an angel's comment, sis. Pop pop your shit, sis. Facts. I'm here for all of it. Yes. I'm here for the fact of like, if I think about myself, like I said, somebody asked us to talk about just NIL. If I think about myself and my personality, if Instagram would have been out, sis, your girl would have been up out of here. I would have been, whoa. I'm trying to tell you.
SPEAKER_01I would have been out of here.
SPEAKER_00My personality with social media, girl, please. Especially, I'm hooping, please. I would have been up out of here. Yes, I would have transferred. I would have ever, I would have got my stats up and I would have been out of Tennessee Tech. Tennessee Tech would have had to give me 100,000 and unlimited strails. Shut up the Strails. I'm hitting y'all up this weekend, the barbecue spot. Unlimited Strails. Yeah. They would have had to hook me up to get me to stay, or I'm out of there. Because I'm going to be somebody's backup at the F the Legacy at this point. I'm going to get my money to my life-changing money, and I'm going to figure something out. You know what I'm saying? So we can put myself ahead. You know what I'm saying? Because at the end of the day, we're keeping it a buck. A lot of them ain't got no direction of what they want to do anyway.
SPEAKER_01They don't. And I don't even know if you got that video that I sent you. Um Angel had her best friend on her podcast. Yeah, India. And she and yeah, India. And she asked her, like, how has the transition been like after basketball? You know what I mean? And pretty much she said it's it's hard. You know what I mean? Like she said it's good. It's been an adjustment and it's hard. Um, so again, if you could get some money, at least make it. And like put and put it in your pocket. Like, man, what save your money? Y'all, like, save y'all money, okay? Save your money. Okay. I know like y'all in college and y'all don't have to pay for a bunch of stuff. But when you get out here in the real world, real life be happening. You ain't got a university paying the medical bills if something was to happen while you're working out and stuff like that. Save your money, invest your money. You know what I mean? Like that's that's really all I can say about NIO. But I think at first for me, it was more so like it was something I had to get adjusted to as far as because I think you, and I I feel like I'm talking a lot, but no, you're cool. Um you had mentioned earlier, and I think this is one of the points I wanted to make. Like, um, when we were coming up, you know, you couldn't, you know, you what taking a vacation in the summer, like taking, you know, doing this or doing that. Like, what are you doing? And I think you better be with your family. Exactly. And I think for me, that was an adjustment for me because that's how I came up in sports, right? Like, it was ball or die. Like, you know what I mean? Ball is life. Literally.
SPEAKER_00They don't understand. Basket, that basketball is life.
SPEAKER_01It's life. Okay. Basketball was life. It was life, okay? If we were not in the gym for AU, if you were not already our shoes on, laced up, like 45 minutes before practice, like you were late. You weren't trying to like get up extra shots. Like, you weren't trying to get better today. You know what I'm saying? Like that type of stuff. Oh, like you're trying to go to your school dance. What? Girl, I'm about to mispractice for a school dance.
SPEAKER_00Girl, I remember my junior year, my boyfriend was a senior. So, you know, you got your junior, senior prom. Yeah, yeah. Right? So, of course, I'm going to two proms. Mm-hmm. I had AU, right? My daddy was on some, you really shouldn't have gone to your own prom. You really should have gone to his. Like, you know, we gotta get offers. Like, you should have just gone to yours next year. My daddy was on some, like, you this, you going to two prom, sis. It's crazy. I I'd give you one even better than that. Yeah. You remember Degrassi, Degrassi next generation? Yeah. Girl, I was addicted to that show in middle school. Me too. Okay. Me too. I remember we had this was summer camp. And I I started, y'all started varsity in eighth grade. I remember this was a summer camp, right? I'm about 12, 13 years old. I remember, you know how you have a bad game, like you, then your coaches gotta sit you down and give a whole speech about how bad you play. Come on over here, Sam. I remember my uncle, who was one of my coaches, being like, and Takara, all you care about is watching the grassy and TV. And I'm thinking, I'm 13 years old, fool. What am I supposed to care about? I'm 13. I'm I'm coming of age, too. I'm coming of age. I am 13. It's like, if people don't understand, like, you could not have a life.
SPEAKER_01So, like, for me to see these kids popping in shit. Absolutely. And I, and I, and that's a great point because that's the that's what I'm saying. Is that I think it took a minute for me to like get through that myself, where it's just like, man, like you like, what do you mean you're taking a trip? You should be in the gym getting shots. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, not y'all, I was not commenting under people's posts and shit. Like, that's the weird shit that y'all do. You know what I mean? But I'm just saying that I'm just like, damn. Somebody got astray. Like, damn, like you've been out all summer. Like, they be doing angel. You know what I mean? Like, you you've been out all like what what I ain't seen you in a a basketball uniform yet. Or some workout clothes, something, you know. But then, like, after a while, like, you know, I'm just like, man, good for them, bro.
SPEAKER_00Enjoy yourself.
SPEAKER_01Man, what? I had to really you gotta change your perspective, like, because it's not you. Like, these kids are not you, they are not living your experiences. Like, they have a totally different set of experiences. And to be honest, like I love it. I think it's I love it, but you know, it's dangerous at the same time, it could be dangerous at the same time, you know, if they don't have the right guidance, but I love it, man. I love it.
SPEAKER_00You know, the end of the day, I don't think that people realize that ball is going to stop bouncing. Yeah. And what do you have? Like, I think about just with myself, like, I think about how like there's things in college that I wish I wouldn't, I would have done off the court. You get what I'm saying? Then I wish I would have did it on the court, if it makes sense. Like, yeah. I wish I would have dreing break with my teammates. Yes. You know what I'm saying? Like, I wish I would have did that. I wish I would have took a little, let's go to Florida. Let's, you know, we got we only got$200 apiece or all together. Yes. I wish I would have did that. So for me, and you talk about you, you know, you say, you know, you would want your kids to be more of the Don perspective, more of the we mingling bits, more of the Gino. You know, I I'm honey, let me tell you something, baby. I want to see her chain.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Hey, but this is what I'm saying though. This is what I'm saying though. That's my perspective. That's me. From a parent, like, I need to draw the range, the reins, protect my baby. Like, you know what I'm saying? But like, the way Christian B, the way Christian is, he's like that. He's like, he's like, mommy, mommy, mommy, you know what Ray Bans are? I'm like, yes. He needed, he needed, he needed to get his shit off in the outfield. Yes. He's like, can you can you give me some Ray Bans? I said, when you come up with$500, what kind of bra wound? What kind of wheel? I don't know. Girl, don't try to get him. No.
SPEAKER_00Go ahead and send them to me. No. Listen, I support, I support the kids getting shit off.
SPEAKER_01Hold on, no. Send brother. Send me. Send me the ray bands. This is the thing, though. I just said that shit, but I hype Christian up big time, bro. I'm I'm right there. Like, talk your shit. I love it. I love the confidence because that's not something I had. So I I definitely nurture it. I nurture it. I nurture that. I'm not like put a lid on it. I nurture it. Um, I just, you know, when he gets to college, like, you know, like shoot, you know how it is when you get to college. Them parents ain't there. They just, you just doing your thing. I'm not trying to be micromanaging, but I just need a coach that you just a little bit afraid of. I got you.
SPEAKER_00I feel you.
SPEAKER_01I just need a coach that you lose a little bit afraid of. I feel that when she she put her foot down, you gonna fall in line because she's not playing no games. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00But I feel you, but also too, I think that comes with a situation where your coach having a good relationship with your parents. You get what I'm saying? Because you do legit let them just because they're they're your mamas.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. They're your mama.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. They're there every day. At the end of the day, it is what it is. Y'all can people can say they're they're your family. Your teammates is your family. Your coach is your mama at this point. Great point. They see you every day. You gotta have them rings up. It's a situation where, you know, call the phone. Hey, this was going on, woo. I need you to let me let me come down and then let's talk about. We can have a whole meeting and get your ass remote. Yes, yes. But you know, but I'm like Deion Sanders, honey. If you look good, you play good. If you play good, they pay good. You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01I'm with I'm with that too. I was the girl who needed the reforms. That'd be my thing with it.
SPEAKER_00Perform. Perform. But you know, that's my thing too. Perform. You know, that's my thing too. Like I'm saying, like when I talked about with fly. If we if we big foe, what we doing? If we coming out with the chain, what we doing?
SPEAKER_01Nah, absolutely. Absolutely. You gotta you gotta perform.
SPEAKER_00You gotta I was you know me. I'm loving Shador when Shador doing the, you know what I'm saying? But we gotta perform, honey.
SPEAKER_01And that's and that's a great point, also, right? Like now that NIL is so, you know, like it's it's out there, you know, you know how much these kids are making. Oh what I'm saying, like that. So when they do have a bad game, or if they do underperform, or if they do lose a game, it is like blown up to the hundred millionth degree because here you are, a college student, ain't even got like as they would say, hold on. This is what they say. You ain't you ain't you ain't got a job. You probably don't even go to class for real. All you gotta do is go to the gym and practice and play a game, and you're making four million dollars. Them football players. Facts. You know what I'm saying? Facts. Um, so that's that's that's really what it is. But I mean, I love it, man. Because listen, the way the economy is right now, get your money. I'm trying to tell, and I and y'all I get your money for your family or whatever it is that you're doing.
SPEAKER_00This is life-changing for everybody. Yeah, yeah. And we're weird team NIL. If you the people, you know, and that's one thing I hate to see, and I always say this. If you the person who be in the NIL ruining college sports, honey, you didn't play college sports. Yeah. Yeah, I I get that to an extent as far as ruining college sports as far as kids jumping ship. Yes. They're chasing a bag. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? But that's the end of the day, they're gonna have to deal with that. You get what I'm saying? Like, now, am I at a point now where I think this does need some type of control? Yes, it's getting out of control. It is getting out of control. More on the men's side than the girls.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. This is what I will say too, though. The NIL, this whole NIL stuff, it's the NCAA's fault. It is their fault. Okay? It ain't these kids' fault. It's the NCAA's fault and their crazy insidious rules. Like, just where you like college athletes could not do anything, could not say anything, could not take anything. And we're talking about, like, and we're just at the mid-major level, y'all, and they made me give back. They made me give back a doll that a fan made, me and my teammate for senior night. Because a fan gave us a doll. So when you think about the what is it from Ohio State, Maurice Clorette, you know, you think about uh Reggie Bush, you know, people like that during the. Who deserve to get paid? Who deserve to get paid, right? But a Heisman taken away, right? Yeah. Like y'all didn't shame Maurice Clorette and all these things or whatever. But the fact of the matter is, if y'all just would have gave student athletes just a little bit of something without holding those reins too tight, we wouldn't have been here today. People would have been okay if they if the NCAA was like, okay, I'm gonna give everybody, you know,$2,500 a month.
SPEAKER_00But Courtney, they did give you something. They gave you a full right scholarship to school. But guess what? Student wasn't first. You didn't go to class anyway, because you know why? If you had a game and you had to go on the road and miss class for three, four days, what are you doing?
SPEAKER_01Well, to those interfered. Well, to those people, you should have jumped higher and ran faster. I don't know what to tell you.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what to tell you. People don't get if if if class interfered, people I'll say it this way: people don't understand. You got your practice schedule first. Mm-hmm. Oh, you you got your Tuesday, Thursday practice schedule first. You got your Monday, Wednesday, Friday practice schedule first. Class around all of that. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Y'all, I had to take my senior year. It was a class that I kept pushing back because it interfered with practice. That my senior year, we had to practice in the morning because I needed this specific class to graduate. The whole team at 5 a.m. I had to keep pushing it back just to make it to practice and stuff. But, you know, it's to me, this is an NCAA. They should have been, like, I honestly, I tell you, if they like at the time in the time in which we were in college, um, you know, if they just would have said, like, hey, because I didn't qualify for like FAFSA or like a like a um, what was that check they used to give? It was like for clothes or something. Something like that. No, it was like so it was some people that got the pill grant, but also like I feel like at Moorhead, there was a time where they would give like all the student athletes like a$500 like check or my wife's getting that? Yeah, and they could go spend it on clothes. They just had to bring back the receipt. So y'all had that proper benefits of that. But you only got that if you got pill grants. So I didn't get that. I didn't get no$500, whatever. Like, you know. So um it's not like you couldn't work, you know, because then that that's even technically NCAA, like not allowed. That's another thing. Can't work. Can't work while you plan, right? You can't get no internship or anything while you plan. You know what I'm saying? So it's just it's I feel like at that time, in that moment, say right now it's 2012, you know, even 2013. Um, 14, I don't know when the NIL, but 14.
SPEAKER_00And they said, The NIL's girl is like three years old. It's not old at all.
SPEAKER_01So just think anybody that was during that time playing sports and the NCAA just said, all right, we giving everybody$2,500. People, like, because you don't know any better, like that, that would have been cool. People would have been okay with that. Like, and been like, okay, cool. You know what I mean? But they just kept, you know, kept going with the BS, kept going with the BS. And now, like, it's like the the lid is off Pandora's box. And it's like at this point, there's no way of reining it back in. You know what I mean? So at this point, get y'all money, kids, because we ain't get shit.
SPEAKER_00Okay. And we we don't never hate on that level here. We want you to get your coins.
SPEAKER_01Listen, I got two kids, and I'm already like, what's the brand? Hey, I need to where is the brand? Listen, my baby swinging that baseball bat. What is the brand? Okay. We got a black boy playing baseball. What is the brand? Okay, what is it? Very handsome boy, very charismatic boy. What is the whole brand?
SPEAKER_00Let's work on the logo. What's the
SPEAKER_01I'm already thinking about Nelly, okay? What is the brand? Send me the Ray Bay. Listen, listen. Don't hey, y'all keep that lid off that shit till my kids get there, okay? I'm trying to tell you. I'm trying to tell you.
SPEAKER_00I got no problem with it. Yeah, we gotta move on. We gotta move on. Um, so we got a mid-major spotlight today. Um, so y'all, I I want to say it's Sharnese. Curry jokes. She actually is a transfer from Indiana. She actually went to UT Martin too. And you know what, Loki, I remember her at UT Martin because she was freshman of the year at UT Martin. She was balling at UT Martin. I do remember her from UT Martin. Um, she's doing her thing um at Murray State. Honestly, if we talk about a team, if y'all are talking about a team who's balling right now, Murray State is balling. They used to be in the OBC. We used to play against Murray State. Right now, they are in the Missouri Belly Conference. You will see this team in the tournament. You will see the state. Oh, they like that? They like that. I think they've only lost Courtney. I want to say they probably only lost maybe three games. You you will see them in the tournament. There, they got a girl from um Haven Ford. They got Haven Ford on the team. She's a girl who's actually from her parents, is from my hometown. So she's from where I'm from. She was Miss Basketball. Okay. Honestly, could have been both, could have been Miss Basketball, Miss Softball. Oh, wow. She's an athlete. Um they got her. They've got another girl, Haley Pook. Pook, something like that. Uh they they've got some players over there at Murray State. So, um, but yeah, the post player.
SPEAKER_01Do you remember Murray State when we were freshmen? They had them twins. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I played against them in high school. Well, I didn't play, I know them from high school.
SPEAKER_01Bro, they was the they was the kid, they was the Caitlin Clark before the Caitlin Clarks.
SPEAKER_00Amber and Paige Guffey. But you know, do you remember Ashley Hayes on their team? Yes, I do. Yes, I do. Ashley Hayes, another one. I think Ashley Hayes went to the WBA. The whole team was fired. They were fired, okay. I want to say that.
SPEAKER_01My coach at the time was losing his mind in practice. He was like, guard the ball, guard the ball, put your hand up. Like, they're gonna cross half court and shoot it.
SPEAKER_00Like, they were so slow and so smart. They were. Paige and Amber Guffey was their names. Ashley Hayes. I wanna say I was a freshman. I wanna say Ashley Hayes came to the hoop at tech when I was a freshman. And I want to say sis had 36 and 16. I wanna say that's what and I and you know, I'ma just go ahead and say she probably gave it on me because they had me playing a post and when I was a freshman, which I wasn't a post player. So I'm gonna just say she gave me them buckets at this point. I wanna say I I know I know it was 36 and 16. I know it was. She came and did it, did a slight thing. So yeah. Um, so yeah, that's our mid-major spotlight. But um, we got a few more things to get into. We gotta get into the games coming up. So we've got, I mean, we got games going on right now as we speak. It looked like UCLA putting on Illinois. Um, oh, Washington and Berlin's a good game. I might have to go back and watch that one. Iowa State is beating Texas Tech right now at halftime. So shout out to that because I Audi got 20 a half, so she back to doing her thing, it looks like. Yeah, and I'm happy for her because I took her on the parlay tonight. Um, yeah, so that's like the big games. We don't really have a whole lot of top 25s for real, for real. Um like I said, we've got um we got Ole Miss and Um Bander Belt Friday. Friday.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I can't. That's gonna be a good one. That's a that's a game was postponed because it was supposed to be um, yeah, that game's postponed, so they're playing it at 3 o'clock Friday. Yeah. So I'm definitely so I'm going to Tennessee Tech this weekend, y'all. We got alumni weekend on the Patreon. I'm gonna be having that exclusive stuff. I'll post a little bit of stuff for y'all too, but I'm excited about that. Um, yeah, so I'm gonna be getting all the behind the scenes. I'm gonna show y'all some TTU Women's Basketball Legacy because y'all be have people be having us effed up. So I'm gonna let y'all know about how we do things, how we got the most uh conference championships in the OBC history. I'm gonna let y'all know the history and the players. So the TTU Women's Basketball Legacy. So um a couple of my um, not none of my teammates, my teammates ain't messing with it, but a couple of the younger girls, the one who I probably was they host and shit, they come in. So we coordinate and we that's gonna be a good little time. So we got that coming up. But Bandy and Ole Miss, have you changed with that? I expect a big game for Cody McMahon. I just expect Bandy to bounce back.
SPEAKER_01I think Omish. Okay. I'm not mad at that. I think Ole Miss. I I still stand with Ole Miss beating her. I think I I'll be honest. I think Galvin got, I think Galvin got exposed in that South Carolina game, man. Yeah. Yeah. And they rely on her, on that, on her, on that, that scoring, uh, just uh her pure like ball handles and and leadership in that way of getting getting the right girls the ball at the right time. Yeah and it just blew me that she did not have a left hand, man. That shit blew me. You know what I think about her?
SPEAKER_00I think that she is, I think that she's like a true competitor. Yes. I think that she's somebody who wants to be good. I think that she might be somebody who you ain't gotta force to get shots of. You ain't gotta force to watch film. I think she's somebody you ain't gotta. Look, look what you did. Look what you did. I think that she's gonna bounce back and handle the ball better. But in it, and this is what we try to say.
SPEAKER_01You trying to like white chocolate. I ain't saying that. But I'm saying I ain't saying. Basketball people, if you know you know. Basketball people, if you know you know.
SPEAKER_00I'm saying that for the game for her to get better and to show that she's gotten better, because they done had a nice little break. A game for her to show that she's gotten better and to get better would be this game. So I expect her to get better. So this one is going to show me about her. And also, too, for all you people who be on some, y'all be forgetting that so-and-so's a freshman. I don't forget nobody's a freshman. Nor do we care. Nor do we care. So, especially when it comes to Alina Chavez, I'm gonna say this. There's a difference between just a freshman and a number one freshman in the country. I expect you to produce. There's a difference between a freshman and a freshman who's starting and playing 30 minutes. We don't give you, and it's like our coach used to tell us, it's January. You ain't a freshman no more. Okay. You a sophomore. Okay. That freshmanship was the first five games. And let me tell you something.
SPEAKER_01You have experience. And a real competitor don't want to hear that shit either. Exactly. Let's be for real. She I'm telling you, you if you said that shit to Leah Chavez, she'd be like, so the fuck?
SPEAKER_00I'm trying to tell you. So I think that I I wanna I'm ready to see her bounce back on this game. I think if this is gonna be the one to do it, as far as athleticism, as far as kind of close to matchups with South Carolina, this would be the one. Okay. The same heat. So we're gonna see. Now, sis can come and just do the same shit. I don't know. But um, I we're gonna see. Um, so as of right now, you guys, we asked you guys what game you wanted us to cover. Right now, Oklahoma and Ole Miss is winning. I mean, not Oklahoma and Texas is winning, which I'm not mad at that game because I actually got a homegirl who's going to the game, so we might have a little halftime report. Y'all keep voting in that game. That's what I that's the one I want to watch. That's the one we kind of want to watch. It's a bunch of good games. We got Tennessee Yukon. Um, there's that. Uh, we got Alabama LSU. That's gonna be a good game, too, for real, for real.
SPEAKER_01That is gonna be a good game. That no, that's gonna be a good game. Oh my god. Oh, so what time are you getting back on Sunday?
SPEAKER_00Girl, I'm coming back Saturday, honey. I'm not staying there. They're not getting a whole weekend out of me. The game is early. The game is at one o'clock. I will be back on the road at 3:30. They're not getting all game out of it.
SPEAKER_01I'm definitely gonna watch the Alabama LSU game too. I'm not sure of it. I might, yeah, I'm gonna watch the Yukon and Tennessee one too.
SPEAKER_00We're gonna watch all of them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, when we when we're more mature, guys, y'all might can get two lives out of us in a day, but honey, I don't, we're not there yet, honey. Um not there yet. Two lives out.
SPEAKER_01We're not there yet.
SPEAKER_00That's like back to back. That's like back to back. I'd die. Um, Michigan and Michigan State. Way force and Duke. You know what? First of all, Duke's another one who's 9-0 in the ACC, and I'm proud of them too. Because we did that first look, we was hard on them. They took that little ass whooping, they got it together. Honestly, I'm just shocked Honestly, I'm happy just for women's basketball period this year. Because I feel like people done took their ass whooping so they done bounced back. We talk about you. We talk about South Carolina got their one little ass whooping, and here we go. You calling the only one left.
SPEAKER_01But you know what? The thing about it is that Duke, when you talk about Duke, Duke had a hard, they had a hard preseason schedule. Oh, facts. You talk about in November, they had uh they had West Virginia, they had South Carolina, UCLA, um, and December they had LSU. Um who else did they have? Baylor. I thought Syracuse was good too. I like Syracuse. Um where was Baylor? I don't know. Baylor was like the first game.
SPEAKER_00That was the first episode of the year. That was like the first that was opening day.
SPEAKER_01Baylor.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Baylor.
SPEAKER_01The fuck?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But you know what though? That goes the show of this preseason being harder than the conference, and then look where we at. Exactly. You know what I'm saying? So we got the when they play Louisville, we'll have to check that one out. Because I don't think have they played Louisville yet? No, they ain't played Louisville yet. So we'll have to check that one out. We got Baylor, West Virginia, we got Louisville, California, we got TCU, Texas Tech. We got Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas. Who you we'll do a pre-show for that one. We won't talk about that. Um, Iowa, UCLA, Florida, and then Florida. I mean, Vanderbilt has to turn around and play again from Friday to Sunday. So they got a quick turnaround. Stay at Owens and they home. Thank God it's not far. Nebraska, Ohio State, Illinois watched this. So we got some, I mean, we got some good games coming up.
unknownYeah.
