absolutely an adjustment . To be honest , um , school was not the plan for me originally . Just because I had started , you know , doing background work and I started writing and stuff . I'm thinking , okay , I'll stay here and I'll just start . You know , maybe I'll like start turning , maybe something like that . Um , and I won't say like it fell in my lap , but but I think my mom just reminded me of , like you know , you should go to school , I can get a degree , all this stuff and that kind of I don't want to say my parents gave me an ultimatum , but they kind of gave me an ultimatum .

You , I have to say , when I went to college many , many moons ago I don't know if you can see the gray hair , but they're there I think college was literally my foundational , like leveling . Yeah , it taught me how to literally form my own relationship with God , because all I knew was my father's church in Lancaster and that's all we knew . When I got to college and was like , okay , I'm going to a Christian university , shout out to , or are you ? Um , I'm in Tulsa , oklahoma , in the middle of nowhere , oh wow , learning that it's the Bible built for the first time . I don't even know what that means . Like , what does this mean ? Um , and then having to now figure out what my faith looks like in college , when I tell you culture shock , like on a thousand .

I remember going to a church that was literally walking distance because I didn't have my car the first couple of years , and I remember being in there and they're singing , like you called me out upon the water and I was literally like , where is when I think about Jesus , where are the tambourines at ? I started crying and it wasn't because I was worshiping , I literally was grieving . I was like , oh no , I don't know what to do . Like this isn't like this . This isn't my church . Yeah , is there going to be in my church ? How do I get my church ? I was a fish out of water , chris .

I literally felt like I needed to leave college . I literally felt like I didn't know what to do with my life because I wasn't exposed to different forms of Christianity , and so I'm super grateful for college because it allowed me to diversify my faith . Understand like that everybody's Christian journey doesn't look the same . The black church experience isn't the same as , literally , the white church experience . Yeah , and that gospel isn't the same as CCM . It literally was so fundamental to me navigating adulthood , and I'm curious if you're having like similar experiences . It'll be different , though , because you're in Atlanta , where there are all the black churches , yeah , but it's still not your foundational church . Like , did you feel like conflicted at all ?

I would say I was , funnily enough , I was actually kind of resistant to find a church home only because , um , I had been in the . We started Cali worship when I was maybe about 11 years old and I think I just was kind of scared to go to a new church where I didn't know anybody and I didn't know if , like , I wanted to serve or not , and it was just all these things and my friends . I really only had like one good , good church friend at the time who was like just as safe as I was , so we both were kind of like up in the air about it . And I had gone to my dad , tj McBride , his church , his friend , his friend . He had a church out there and I went there . It was far though , so like it was hard and I felt convicted . So I'm like I need to go to church but I don't know . And so I found the Dream Center William Murphy Church where I had the first revival , but I'll say definitely it's helped me grow my faith .

I think , seeing that was my first time , I guess , being outside , being away from my parents and not having that I have to come home every day and be able to do what I wanted and I think I got kind of caught up in the freedom a little bit . I had to stop myself and be like , okay , wait a minute . Like this is not you , that's not who you are . Like think about when you go home , like how are you then ? And you know what ? I didn't have that anymore . So , um , I think it did help me find find my relationship with Lord of my own , yeah .

I think freedom is a part of the process . I think we have to lean into it , but I what I love about what you said is you realize like okay , now , this isn't who you are like it's that , that inner being , like that still small voice , like kind of tugging at you , what made you actually want to listen to that and not ignore it ?

College Journey and Finding Faith

out , I'll be all right , I'll say I had a child snooze , okay , for I'll say a couple of months . Okay , just because , like , I was super sheltered and because of , um , like when I was younger , in school , I didn't really I was bullied in school , um , like elementary school , so I didn't really have a lot of friends growing up , just because my parents that they're like , oh , you think you ought to have whatever . So I was always very isolated and so this was one of the first times that I'd had a crew and a friend . I just I didn't want to lose that , but I , in that I was sacrificing , you know , my walk , I was sacrificing my feet . So I think it was just like a moment where I looked up I think you know what it was .

We were out and my friend just took a video of me . We were somewhere and I just looked back the next morning and I was like , how would you feel if your mom saw this video ? Or how would you feel if your little sister saw this video ? And it really convicted me and I mean , honestly , I was scared that , like , my friends wouldn't want to be around if I wasn't out with them , if I wouldn't want to party with all these things . But they embraced me actually , and because they knew who I was when I came from and always did , and so they were like , yeah , we always thought like you know that , like why is Krista ? Whatever , but they , they embraced me and they definitely loved me through it . Um , and yeah , I'm on the other side of that now .

I love that , chris . Yeah , I think so many people and probably listening has experienced that same moment of feeling like I don't want to sacrifice my community , like for my Christianity . Yeah , and it's like trying to find this balance of how do I have both like ? Can I have both ? Like what ? Like you know , and I'm reminded of the scripture , like what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul ? Right ? So it's like . But when you have been isolated , you've had similar experiences being sheltered , being isolated , growing up . You're longing for that exactly .

You're longing for that sense of community and it's funny because I really I prayed for the Lord to like Lord , help me , help my friend group adjust , or help my friend group Like Lord , save all my friends . And it's crazy because now all of them are coming to church with me and all of them and you know , and so it's like this group thing now where it's like everybody is like God's convicted them in different ways . And I'm seeing this especially my best friend , because she was , she didn't grow up in church but she'll come with us but she kind of felt on the outside because she didn't know the culture and she didn't know the shout and did all the music and stuff . But I see like God working on her , like actively , and so it's so beautiful that that was able to be the result of what happened . You know , yeah , I love that , chris .

I want to take it back to the beginning . Okay , so you said you were 11 when your parents heard the call to start Cali Worship , which is a phenomenal ministry in the San Fernando Valley . If you can area , please come on out . Come on . How did you feel ? Cause , like they were already superstars , they're already , you know , have a following , and to now pivot into like , actually like stewarding a church is a whole thing .

Yeah , I think my first thought was do y'all have time for this ? I don't win between the like when is the church thing gonna happen ? In between the traveling and the studioing and the , the running , the labelings and all these things there's only 24 hours in a day . So I was , I wasn't resistant , I was just like okay , well , we'll see how it works . I guess , and I think , um , my mom gets mad at me when I say this , but I really didn't feel like I grew up in church because they worked so much and I'll say like I was in green room church and I was at the church events and my mom was singing and stuff .

And I mean we did go to church . We were at Faithful Central , like growing up , so we went there here and there , but they were so busy so we weren't in church every Sunday , so and that was an adjustment , but , um , it didn't feel bad or anything like that . It was , it was cool and I mean I was young so I don't know , I don't really remember having any issues with it , but it definitely was an adjustment . Um , but I made friends from it , my cousins coming to church with me , so it was , it was cool , I was happy with it . That's good .

I like how you said but I understand how she can get me upset . I like how you said you didn't feel like you grew up in church . Yeah , yeah , you felt like you grew up in green room church , because that is that's I mean , that's their occupation , right , yeah . So you felt like I'm at a church , but I know that we singing and we leaving yeah you know , I mean , like it's not , we're not here every Sunday to serve , you know .

So yeah , um , it was just different for me , but it's not that I was unaware or anything like that , but it definitely was an adjustment definitely .

How is it different ? Now , right you , being a young woman , you now serving at Cali Worship actively like . How does that feel ?

um , I'll say , actually I started serving on the praise team when I was , I want to say , like 13 14 , and I was scared .

I first went to Jay . She kind of pulled it out of me because they would do , like , you know , youth Sunday and I was singing the youth praise team . I was singing the choir , um , but it was different , you know , being up there and everything , um , and that was definitely an adjustment , um , but I think , because I always love to sing , I think it was a fun thing for me and then I really feel like it helped me grow my relationship with god . I think there's like where I really like felt comfortable to start like actually worshiping , which is funny because I was on the stage . So you think it would be the opposite . But I think , like when I was on that stage , like with the praise team , I feel like that's when I was feeling the presence of God the most and it kind of like switched things for me and kind of knowing like how to get into the presence of God on my own , um , and so I I'm grateful for that um very much so what did that actually feel like ?

I really , because before it was like , okay , everybody worship , but I don't really feel nothing . That was the first time I was like , oh , like Lord's here , he's here for real , I feel y'all .

And I don't know . I think it was kind of funny . I was just playing music and like just trying to pray and be like thank you Jesus , thank you Jesus . But I think I don't know , being in worship , I really just did what I did there , like sing those songs there , go to my knees and pray like I watched my mom and dad do , and it came or he came .

I love that . He met you and now you are , literally , you've taken on the mantle . That's what I'm going to say , like cause it really is a mantle , chris . It's a mantle , it's a calling . Yeah , that's literally all he needs is your yes , right , like , you don't have to have all the answers , you don't have to know how it's going to go , you just got to be willing . And because you were willing , like God has , literally , you've had two of these things and they have literally been going viral on my timeline . And they have literally been going viral on my timeline . Chris , really this shout LA . I was in New York for work , mad that I couldn't be there , but I was streaming and I was literally like yo .

This is like I'm like chills and I mean , I was nervous in the beginning when we did the first one . So I'm like , are people going to come Like , is this going to be a thing Like really ? And I don't know . I Like this is going to be a thing Like really , and I don't know . I think , well , my mom , she obviously helped me , like you know , with the promotion stuff or whatever . So we did all the things , but I was just scared that , like you know , I don't know if people would come . They don't really know me like that , I don't know .

But the turnout was great and I think it's just like leaning on my friends and stuff out , and it was really , really good and I was really encouraged by that and so I'm glad it started um with me , my friend um , nakia Moffitt . She goes to Clark and we've known each other since high school and we ended up being roommates and honestly , this is the top of last year and we're on this year , actually top of this year , and we were um fasting and we both had this idea and I think we're just kind of talking about like our need for revival , really , and and what we wanted ourselves spiritually , and we came up with this idea and we were . It was really this big thing . We planned shout ATL and shout LA in the same night , like it was , yeah , we were really , really excited about it and God like really just put it on our heart and I'm so glad that , um , people have had the response that they have was just really really , really good .

It was revival you know how we hear about . Our parents would tell us like , oh , we need a tent revival . Yeah , I feel like that is literally the mantle , but in modern day form . Yeah , you know what I mean , and it's going to take on that shape . It doesn't have to look like what azusa street looked like . It doesn't have to look like anything else other than what god wants to do . Yeah , you know , through shout revival and that's so amazing , chris , I love that you said that you got god literally downloaded to you in one moment yeah I don't think we realize enough that when god is speaking , it doesn't take this long journey for us to like literally when we give him our yes .

Yeah , and things definitely fell into place . Like we went to Bishop Murphy when I first had the idea sat down with him and I didn't know how I was going to feel , cause I mean , I don't know him super well , um , but when I did come he was super kind to me , very welcoming , um , but he actually told me in that moment he was like so crazy because we're in between youth leaders and we really needed something like this , wow . And I was like , wow , that's crazy . And so he was like , yeah , I'll let y'all do this , just be on the lead team , the team for the youth . And I was like , okay , cool , wow . And things really just all fell into place like super easily . People were there , the singers came together so easily and I mean , these are people that I met over my college experience but everyone just gelled together so well and it just it was great and I knew that it was something that God had ordained for us to do . I love it . I absolutely love it .

What are some of the upcoming cities that you're thinking about ?

Well , not in any kind of official capacity , but we want to go to Orlando , houston , but I think , as of like currently , we'll probably do another one in Atlanta . Yeah , because that's where we're headed back to for school and everything . So once , like you know , everyone's done with that , then we'll be able to travel and do more things . But all over the US really is where is where ? Wherever , whatever churches want to have us , yeah , whatever churches want to have us .

That's where I Honestly , and churches should be literally opening doors all over the US because it's so needed . It's such a need for this generation , because a lot of people aren't being raised the same way we were raised . A lot of people aren't being forced to have to go to church . Right , and I say forced because we really , we were voluntold . Yeah , let's just keep it 100 . Yeah , we were voluntold , we didn't have a choice . You're going that's funny , take . You're going , that's funny , take your shower . You're going , yeah , against your will , but we needed that because that is what literally instilled in us those principles you know , turn for child hello , like literally , because that's I think that was what saved me when I was in college .

You can't gentle parents when it comes to their soul and how their soul needs to prosper , because the devil's after it too . The devil is not gently doing anything At all . Obviously I have a desire , a strong desire , to be in a relationship , but to have that connection with somebody , um , but I also wanted to be in god's timing . Yeah , um , and so I definitely . There was points where I was like I want another boyfriend and there will be guys that I meet that kind of like me , but then it kind of doesn't work out , and it was always kind of those situations .

So I think honestly , and I'll say , like back before I was in college and I was crying to the Lord about some guy or something , he was just like why is my love not sufficient for you ? And I was like I'm sorry , lord , you right , that's good . And I think I'm in a season now where I'm growing as a person . I'm trying to figure out what I want to do musically , I'm trying to figure out where my life is headed right now , and I think whoever he that findeth his ? Is he going to find when it's time for him to find ? So I think that's just kind of what it is now , because I feel like with me personally , if I hold on to it , it becomes to be a problem for me . So I'm just waiting on the Lord , waiting on the Lord , waiting on the Lord To whoever sends him , wherever that guy is .

You know you lift them up where they low , please , because I'm I need , I need someone to talk , because I need someone to make me feel like I'm small , but even though I'm not , you know what I mean I need that curvy is in first of all , curvy is in .

So period , oh . But in all seriousness though , um , yeah , I don't really have super big preferences . I guess somebody who is in the same field as I am I've always loved that . I mean , I'm trying my hardest to not idolize my parents relationships very hard because they textbook . They are textbook , um , and my dad's ruined it for me , thinking that I could go out there and find a musician who's gonna be loyal , um , but um , he's ruined it for me , but , um , it's gonna be hard to find . Exactly that's what I've heard . So , um , that's why I'm saying I'm just gonna wait on the lord to send him , because trying to look not impossible , not , yeah , it's not working , yeah I mean , honestly , you have a great blueprint , so I understand , understand , it's , ooh , same field .

Do you feel like they get to do more fun things ? Or like , did you have the freedom to have the balance of like , all right , I get to go to my schools , dances or hang out with friends , and then it ended up that way Okay , um , but at first , no , I felt like they would get to be more freer to me .

Even I'm thinking about like little stuff , not more so pk stuff , but just and really I won't . I won't do my brother just because he's the only boy in the house , and that's a whole different thing , but my little sister . However , there's just certain things that they let her do earlier than I was that I was a little bit salty about . I wasn't allowed to get hair in my head until I was 13 years old . She getting braids and all types of stuff . I couldn't get nails , like . There's certain things I just like they didn't want me to do .

But I think also , um , the way my mom explained it to me is when I was first born . That's the first child . So they thinking , oh , I got to do that , but the more you , you know , have more kids , whatever she was , okay , this thing's not that deep and that thing's not that deep , so it's , I can't really get mad or compare yeah , um , but no , I will say like I'm the most like high-strung sibling , yeah , so I worried about it more than they did , so they're more chill , so it's like they're not as stressed as I am , yeah , but um , no , it wasn't from my parents so much as like my own self of like , oh , I gotta be this way , I gotta be that way . People watching me , yeah , um , but they definitely have an easier growing experience just because they've allowed themselves to be more easy going about it .
