Live from Silver Bowl Studios in Warnerball. This is Southwest Local News with Shauna Rogers.

SPEAKER_04

Good morning and welcome to Southwest Local News. Emergency services attended a two-vehicle accident just during morning peak hour on Monday morning. All services attended the intersection of Caramet and Walsh Road just after 8 30 a.m. Crews arrived at the scene where no one was trapped. According to Ambulance Victoria, paramedics attended the patients and they were assessed at the scene with no serious injuries. There's also been people caught doing drugs and defacing the walls with offensive messaging. Every day in Australia, 12 people die from breast or ovarian cancer. Speaking to Cancer Survivor in this year's ambassador, she's proud to see so many people getting behind the event.

SPEAKER_02

I usually do it in Geelong, but I transferred to Waterwell this year because I'm Danny Mortlake for the weekend.

SPEAKER_03

Just hope that every year it grows more and more. The more awareness we have and everybody that joins in, because unfortunately, cancer seems to be something that touches every single person. Everybody either has had someone in their family or knows somebody that's gone through a cancer journey, which is unfortunate. But the more we raise money, hopefully we can put an end to this someday.

She was one of 25 community leaders from across the country who attended. These leaders came from fields such as health, education, business, and community development. As part of the summit, Miss Ye got to meet the Governor General of Australia, Sam Moiston. Southwest Dairy Ladies Luncheon has used the occasion of the Warnable May Racing Carnival to name a special keynote speaker for 2026. Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been named for the keynote speaker role. Payne shot to fame in 2015 when she became the first woman jockey to win Australia's biggest race. The Southwest Dairy Ladies' Luncheon will be held on August the 13th at Deacon University in Warnable. Winter is coming and so is a popular Warnable event. The annual Warnable Solstice Search Party will return to Lake Potobe on June the 20th. The event has plenty planned to keep the attendees warm. Features of the night will include live music, a train mural, dancing, and a silent disco. A standout will be an installation of neon light sculptures throughout the event, alongside projections from One Day Studios. May continues to be an important time for those suffering at the hands of domestic violence. May has the official title of Family Violence Prevention with the aim to highlight the support available for victims and survivors. Already, National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day was held on May the 6th, while today is Are You Safe at Home Day? Candlelight vigils are being held during the month while resources are being steered towards getting out the message family violence is not acceptable. Money continues to be found to install infrastructure for one of Warnable's key growth areas. In its 2026-2027 draft budget, Warnerville City Council will source a$3 million loan for the Wollaston Road project. This money will be borrowed by Council and will help complete the project. The project is scheduled to start supplying gas from 2028 and will drill 9 kilometres off the coast of Peterborough and Port Campbell. Friends of the Earth says the new gas project would jeopardise Victoria's ambitious emissions reduction targets and fly in the face of the scientific consensus against new fossil fuel projects. It is urging participation in community consultation, which will commence from May the 27th and includes local drop-in sessions in Portland, Warnable, and Peterborough. A partnership between Moyne and Warnerball City Council will again give young people the chance to have their voice heard. Applications are now open for the Youth Advisory Board. Residents of Moyne and Warner aged 16 to 25 are invited to apply. Members chosen will meet monthly and work directly with council and representatives and contribute to decisions on issues that matter to them and their communities. Last year, members were invited to have their say on a range of projects such as the Croat Youth Space, the Moyne Aquatics Strategy, the Active Warnable Strategy, the programming for this year's Lighthouse Theatre Shows. The tough troop to Tim Boon has been successfully navigated by Naranda. The Blues took on the Demons on Saturday in what turned out to be a close encounter. Naranda started well and led by 24 points at three-quarter time. But the home team came back hard with seven scoring shots to two in the final quarter. But the Blues were good enough to hold on, winning by nine points.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, uh, they've improved a lot, Walks. That was a pretty tough game. There was a sort of fury there in the last quarter. I thought we're going to lose. So it's a pretty good contest. We've had a couple, a few weeks in a row now.

SPEAKER_08

So yeah, well, it's it's uh only gonna hold you in good stead. Obviously, you got a couple of injuries. I think Braden hurt himself, did he? Or and uh Brock Neal.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, I don't know what Brock done, but Harko hurt his hammy and you know we lost Dylan Lees last week, so we've still got a few to come back in. So just managing all that at the moment, but it's just good to get a win, I suppose, and move forward.

SPEAKER_08

No, that's it. Um obviously Harding into that side helps your forward structure as well.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, he's just a presence up forward today. I think we just kicked it to him and he marked everything and he kicked pretty straight. What do we kick? 12, 5, and he probably kicked six or seven of them, and I don't think we kicked many points either.

SPEAKER_08

So I don't know, but no good win. You're building building nicely. Uh you normally leave your light run a bit late, but you're starting it early this year, you bakes, which is good.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, I was trying to bank a few early. Last year we lost too many games and uh we made it pretty hard. We don't want to finish outside the top three. We're still good enough to win it, so we all know it. So we've just got to get going a bit earlier.

SPEAKER_08

Nah, no worries, Jeremy. Thank you very much. Well done on the victory.

SPEAKER_04

Timber and Demons put up a strong fight on Saturday in Warnerbellin District, A grade netball. The Demons went into the game against Naranda without a win in its first four rounds, while the Blues were undefeated. The Blues jumped to a seven-goal lead at quarter time and a big win was at hand. But the Demons fought back, winning the second quarter by a goal. The Blues pulled away to win by 15 goals in a hard-fought contest.

SPEAKER_06

How do you feel? Yeah, good. Like normal, I think. Yeah, that's it. How many years have you played in a random hall?

SPEAKER_05

Oh gosh, from junior from juniors. Um if you're counting juniors, I'm not sure, but ten in A grade?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I mean, I know I'm putting you on the spot right now, but you've played under a lot of uh exceptional coaches, but who would be the fan favourite? Oh, that's that is hard. And without throwing anyone under the bus. And I think Steph would have me if I didn't say her, but no, I again I have had some amazing coaches and learnt off so many of them, but um Steph will always have a little sweet spot in the heart.

SPEAKER_06

So yeah, we we were we were talking about Steph quite a bit on the sidelines today. Obviously, she's not here today, so you guys got thrown in the deep end with coaching and leading this team. You and Maddie done such an exceptional job today. Um, how does it feel out there without a big girl?

SPEAKER_05

It's weird, it's different. You actually don't realise how much you miss her presence. She is such a big pivotal um, not even coach, but player um for us. So, and yeah, I think we missed definitely missed her voice and her direction out there today, but got the job done for her.

SPEAKER_04

So Southwest Exports Hugh McCluggage and Sam Walsh played starring roles for their teams in round nine for the AFL action. McCluggage's Brisbane Lions hosted Walsh's Carlton on Friday night at the Gabba. Walsh's 29 possessions and McCluggage's 25 had their pair in the top five ball winners for the game.
