Live from Silverball Studios in Warnable. This is Southwest Local News with Shauna Rogers.

SPEAKER_01

Good morning and welcome to Southwest Local News. Police have had a busier King's Birthday long weekend than they would have liked. As part of the statewide Operation Regal, local officers were out and about on the roads. Impaired drivers were again an issue with four drink drivers and two drunk drivers caught by police. Another driver double-dipped in worst possible way, reading positive to over the limit in alcohol and drug taking. Warnerville police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a theft in the city on Sunday, April the 19th. It is believed an offender attended a supermarket on Lava Street in Warnerville about 1010am. It is alleged that he stole an electric scooter that was parked inside the store near the registers. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1-800-3300. A delegation from the Warnable City Council has returned from an overseas journey to visit Warnerville's sister cities. Warner Mayor Ben Blaine was accompanied by Council CEO Andrew Mason, Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism General Manager Liz Price, Crangmite Shire's Manager Economy and Prosperity Katie McMahon, and Warnerville Hospitality Operator John Watson. The delegation spent two weeks overseas visiting Warnerville's sister city Mira in Japan and Chang Chun in China. Councillor Blaine said the visit included visits to a marine research facility, a hydrogen facility, and a train building plant. Councillor Blaine said tourism was also high on the agenda.

SPEAKER_08

Looking at the trip and looking at what it actually means for Warnable, you know, we want to keep pushing those opportunities that are there. The opportunities around, you know, tourism, making sure that, you know, we can get tourists out here that are self-driving, that tour, that we can get more weddings out here, that we can actually do what we can to really encourage that tourism spend and the education possibilities as well. We went to a hydrogen facility in China, so looking at that and how that'll um and how that'll play into Deacon and how we can use that with high sell and leverage off that as well. And also some of the opportunities around marine research, especially between Mura and Warnable as well, both being coastal cities, and also just um looking at you know student exchanges, not just from an education perspective around language, but also looking at work exchanges because Warnerville's peak season is Murrah and Tenchung's off season. So there are going to be opportunities there, and it's something we really want to work towards facilitating because you know both cities are so proud of our sister city relationships and are really keen to actually leverage off it.

The Southwest will be a part of a federal government rollout of new contraceptive resources for women across the country. The Western Victoria Primary Health Network, Limited, has been chosen to deliver training to provide better access to safe, affordable, long-acting reversible contraception. The federal government has chosen a health network in each state to help deliver the investment. The federal government has invested $25.6 million into the program. Wanable is one of the four regional hubs for the Western Victoria Primary Health Network Limited, along with Geelong, Ballarat, and Horsham. Through the program, women will be able to access free advice and support about their contraceptive options. It will also include the insertion and removal of IUDs and birth control implants delivered by skill providers at no cost to the patient. Held over the King's birthday long weekend at Castiden, the birthplace of the breed, Sunday's premier auction saw strong ringside and online bidding, resulting in an impressive 88.1% clearance rate, with 52 of the 62 offered lots finding new homes. The undisputed star of the auction was Lot 7 Stella, sold by Paul McPhail of Baloca Kelpies in Welshpool, who fetched the event's top price of $23,500. McPhail also secured the highest priced pup of the day with Flea selling for $20,000. The overall auction average sat at a strong $9,144. Pounding the streets of Port Ferry for miles and miles has turned into a lucrative activity for the community. The Port Ferry Marathon has announced it has put over $120,000 back into the community from its 2026 event. The event is a fundraiser for Port Ferry Consolidated Primary School, with its reward this year coming in at just over $90,000. But the love was also shared throughout the town with nine other groups receiving funding for the role they played in delivering the event. These groups included the Port Ferry Surf Lifesaving Club, the Port Ferry Little Athletics, and the Port Ferry Soccer Club. The marathon attracted athletes from across the state with over 2,000 entries. The long wait is over for Warnables Brian Steele. After more than a decade off the road, Mr. Steele is back on the road riding his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle. It comes after an 11-year absence as a motorist, which was caused by an accident when he ran into a cow in his car. The accident caused damage to his neck and spine, but his hard work and persistence has now paid off.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, just to be able to get back.

SPEAKER_01

The checks include a 20-minute scan by trained dermoscopists who carry out thorough head-to-toe examinations. There are 100 plus slots available with appointments running from 9am till 3:30 pm each day. Around 20 of the slots are already filled within the hours of being open.

SPEAKER_03

They do a head-to-toe check. They're even checking people's hair. The demoscopists, that's the people who do the checking, are really well trained. The motto of Lions is we serve, and we try and provide services that are helpful to communities.

SPEAKER_01

An olive collection has bared much fruit for a dedicated team of volunteers. Fruit Rescue Southwest has collected a harvest of olives weighing in at 1,125 kilos. The bounty has since been converted into 176 litres of olive oil. The olives have been collected from across Warnabulen the district with more than 60 sites in the harvest. First making news in sport.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, no, it was a it was a really good game of football, and uh yeah, our boys played uh really well for four quarters yesterday, so that was very pleasing.

SPEAKER_05

Um and it's good yes to be able to say you've gone through the whole round. Um unbeaten, that's a pretty good achievement.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, it is, and as but as I stated yesterday as well, like we know like it's important to get these wins early and get the wins on the board. And win in form's good form. Uh but you know, come the back end of the year, um it all changes. So we'll just keep going with that approach of you know, one week at a time and and you know, and see where we end up at the end.

SPEAKER_05

And depth is probably gonna be pretty important at that top end of the ladder. Um you guys have obviously got a decent reserve side as well, and obviously a couple of injuries yesterday, so that's gonna sort of factor in that squad mentality, I suppose.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, like we haven't been at full strength all year. Like we still had four players out of our side yesterday, so um you know, like, yeah, we lost two players, you know, probably for you know for a significant amount of the back end of the year. Um but you know, we're pretty we're pretty hopeful that both those players uh will be back towards the back end of the year. So, you know, we got a couple hopefully might get up this week and and get back into the senior side. So our depth, you're right, our depth is really good. And um, you know, there's some young lads in our in our reserves that have been playing some consistent, really good footy that probably deserve a chance or a bit more of a chance. So over the next few weeks, they're probably going to get their opportunities.

SPEAKER_01
