This morning on Southwest Local News. A new survey designed to provide locals to stay-on police services in the region. Scrap the tax, local brigades to head to Bendigo for a CFA volunteers rally. Exclusion zones now in place at Logan's Beach to protect the southern white whales. And in sport, another rooster set to make his debut at the AFL this weekend.
SPEAKER_00Live from Silver Ball Studios in Warnerball. This is Southwest Local News with Shauna Rogers.
SPEAKER_01Good morning and welcome to Southwest Local News. Southwest residents have the chance to have their say on police services. The annual police community sentiment survey is now open. The survey asks for feedback on where police resources can focus their efforts in service to the community. The survey includes asking participants what are their three top safety concerns that they have. Inspector Dean Pickering says the survey can be filled out at the Victoria Police website. The Southwest will be well represented at a major rally in Bendigo on Sunday.
SPEAKER_05You know, it's about our people being safe in the community, being safe at home, around road conditions, whom driving and the like. It's all anonymous, so it's a chance to get on there and tell us the good, the bad, and the untidy. What are we doing well? What can we do better? We actually take all of this on board and we'll have a look at it and go, you know what, we're spending a lot of time here. Maybe we should be doing it here. It might mean that we've, you know, got too many patrols on a particular day of the week. We changed those times and the dates, uh, and we act to work in with our community. We're part of our community. We are our community, so we want what is right for us as well. Um, so get on, do the survey. We'll make some tweaks as a result of what we see back from it, but it's a really good chance to see where you're at in terms of community safety, how you feel interacting with police. For the most part, we're just normal people, you know, and we like a good chat. Um, but we get that not everyone likes the coppers at the same time. So um we want people to get on, we want them to do the survey, we can have a look at how we're going, we can make some adjustments when we get those results back.
SPEAKER_01Protections are again in place for Warnable's famous visiting Southern Wright Wales. An exclusion zone at Logan's Beach is in place as it is each year from June to the end of October. The zone extends between Galls Cave and Point Ritchie, with all-powered watercraft prohibited from entering. Warner is a popular destination for Southern Wright Wales to give birth and care for their calves. Across all other Victorian waters, boats must stay at least 200 metres from whales and jet skis at least 300 metres. The Hamilton community is getting its first look at what an important new building in the town could look like. Southern Grampianshire Council has released concept designs for the Hamilton Community Hub, Library, and Civic Square Complex. This will be in the heart of the town in Lonsdale Street and will come at a cost of $34 million. Council is now asking ratepayers to check out the concept designs and have their say.
SPEAKER_02Students, mostly sort of year 10, 11, and 12, are the ones that we um who help us to build all this crazy stuff and make TV shows for YouTube and animations and music and all sorts of stuff. And then we have after school classes, and we we've had those quite consistently full of about 50 kids every week. So some of those kids we saw 40 odd times throughout the year. Um and it adds up to being 1.2 activities every single day of the year. So whether it's a class or a workshop, we're pretty flat out with all the creative kids in this town. Look, it's a big demographic um, and it often goes unnoticed because a lot of creatives work independently just on their own in their studio or whatever. But there's about 350 creative businesses in Mournable, some of whom employ multiple people at once. And so there's actually quite a lot of work out there being done by creatives and a lot of young people wanting to get into that industry. Um, but there's not that many opportunities for them at the moment. They're sort of all a lot of them are closed down. But we being one of the only ones, we get people from Mount Gambia, Portland, Hamilton, Colac like they're they're willing to come far and wide because of what we do here.
SPEAKER_01June has been declared National Spinal Health Month. This month's focus will be driven by the Australian Chiropractors Association. Data shows the nation survey of 1,040 people showed 87% experienced back pain in the past 12 months. Of that number, 44% reported chronic back pain. An unwelcome side effect was the mental health issues that accompany this back pain, with nearly 70% of those suffering reported a mental health impact. Cost of living pressures has also meant almost half of the people reporting pain had not sought professional treatment due to financial constraints. This has led to over-the-counter pain medication use rising to 86.4%. The positions to become open will be for operations and fire support officers. The new recruits would work alongside permanent firefighting staff to deliver land management activities and respond to bushfires and other emergencies. The new recruits would work alongside permanent firefighting staff to deliver land management activities and respond to bushfires and other emergencies. The position will be seasonal between November and April for a minimum period of 22 weeks. Forest Fire Management works alongside other agencies such as CFA and Fire Rescue Victoria. Applications for positions open July the 2nd.
SPEAKER_03Warnerboard playwriter Megan Twycross brings her show stuck to the Lighthouse Theatre.
SPEAKER_04We've been at La Mama for three full weeks and then we had an online season. And now we've got two shows only here in Warnerville. It's just really exciting. I suppose the story um comes from my imagination, which comes from here. So it was written in COVID. So it's been what six years. If you think about the writing of it from inception, from in here to uh on the stage. So it's gone through developments, it's gone through dramaturgical analysis, it's gone it's been, you know, I still think there's still room for improvement, as there always is. But it's definitely um been a long journey, even to just bring it back to the lighthouse theatre, to be honest. The setting is in a deli and uh a supermarket deli with two women watching the world go by. Uh so take what you will of that as a metaphor for um perhaps women in regional areas, health outcomes, um, systematic oppression or barriers on the VC playlist. So it's really exciting to have local VC students coming to see it. We've had lots of amazing reviews from the students in town. Uh, you know, and it was cool when we had regional students from I don't know, Wadonga and these crazy places coming down to see the show uh in uh Melbourne. So now we get our regional students coming to see it. We went to tenure, we didn't have to audition, we were really tapped people on the shoulder and was like, this is what the piece is, have a read of the script, this is who we're working with, and um we're pretty lucky in who we've got. We've got Caroline Lee and Eva Seymour, two amazing uh professional actors that are doing justice to my work, which is very humbling, I must say.
SPEAKER_01Herbert has dominated for the Geelong Cats VFL side in recent seasons. He also played for South Warnable in round three this season, having named the Roosters as his home feeder club at the start of the season. A pivotal game will mark round nine and the halfway mark of the Hampton League senior football season tomorrow. Terang Mortlake will host Corroit at Mortlake in the match of the day. The Saints are second on the ladder with seven wins, with the Bloods a game further back in third. If the Saints win, it'll put a handy gap on the chasing pack going into the second half of the year and keep them in with a shot at the top spot, which the North Wanneble Eagles currently hold. Both teams will go in without star forwards with Croix coach Sam Dobson out with a back injury and the Bloods Jackson Payne unavailable.
SPEAKER_09So, yeah, mate, just this week against Croy, um, a big game, a really big game as far as you know half of the season, but that um for that top three position.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, no, a hundred percent. I mean, um would have been playing some really good footing, so I mean I definitely got in his favourites, and that's fair enough. But um, you know, we're we're looking to be at the back after a couple of losses the last two weeks, but um it's a big game, like if we can finish the halfway marking seven and two, well, I think that'll be a bloody great result.
SPEAKER_09So and you'd be even though you've lost your last two games, you wouldn't be too disappointed with the way you played them games.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, look, I'm not um yeah, I think you're right there. I mean, I wasn't overly disappointed. There was probably just a few moments and and structural things that are probably maybe crept in that we can sharpen up on, so I'm hoping this week we'll uh we'll get that right. But yeah, in when you're playing the author with a top team, you sort of gotta take his chances, and then mournable last week. We we played probably some really good footy in patches, and then there were some patches where we didn't play as good and probably gave him some easy goals. So that's that's all it can come down to sometimes. But I'm really looking forward to this week. Hopefully we can we can tighten up on a few things um which we've sort of reviewed, and then yeah, just comes down to rocking up the play and being ready for a fourth quarter effort.
SPEAKER_09Will Jackson Payne be available this week?
SPEAKER_07Uh Jackson Payne won't be available this week, but um, you know that so he'll he'll be out this week. I think he'll be back the following week and then at a little bit more frequent after that, hopefully, as well. But he's he's ended up, he's really loving it. He's probably he's probably come down a bit more than he initially first thought, so that's been good.
SPEAKER_09And what about Lockheed Wareham?
SPEAKER_07Is he back full time now? He will be back full-time in a couple of weeks. He was just um on the weekend looking at some work and some other things like that, so that was uh that was good to have him back in, and and he's gonna be um very handy going forward, that'll be for sure.
SPEAKER_09And what about um just watching some vision of you guys? There's some young blokes I hadn't seen before, but you've obviously pumped 20, 30, 40 games into them, and they look like pretty good players.
SPEAKER_07They are no, they're they're they're very exciting, these young blokes we've got playing. Like you look at we were able to get sort of 20 20 games into Jackie Feller and Josh later last year, and they've they've taken their games to another level this year, which is which has been exciting. We we sort of played Tate um McMaster late last year for one game, and yeah, he just looks like a hundred-game player already, which is which is hard to believe. But he he had a pretty good hard job on Luke Cody on um Saturday and he done a great job.
SPEAKER_01South Warnbull Premiership player George Stevens has had a dominant start to the VFL season. Stevens has played in all ten of Geelong's games, kicking eight goals and being named in the best players nine times. His strong form has helped the Cats to a nine-win, one loss record, and top spot on the ladder. Stevens' efforts have seen him named as an emergency for the Cats AFL team for tonight's game against the Gold Coast Suns. Stevens and the Geelong's VFL team will take on the Suns tomorrow at the GMHBA Stadium. Warnable Export Trevor Gleason has taken over as coach of National Basketball League club, the Adelaide 36ers. Gleason has signed on for the next three seasons. It is the latest chapter in a stellar coaching career for Gleason, having led the Perth Wildcats to five NBL championships. He's also experienced the cut and thrust of the NBA as the assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors and the Milwaukee Bucks. Trevor says he's looking forward to the next chapter.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, look, it's an exciting time without a question. And it's um, you know, I've been watching from afar and um just the vision of the team and um where it's headed, and uh obviously I've got strong ties with with Bryce, so that's always incentive there to have the you know, arguably the best player in NBL history. So yeah, it's an exciting time, but it was really matched up with uh the vision and you know what they were looking for in a coach. And um, you know, that that got me excited, and um, I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead.
SPEAKER_01Warnables Taylor Ralph will be back in the saddle this weekend when the Women's Circuit Racing World Championship returns. This will be round four for the season, with the action taking place at the Masano World Circuit in Italy. Heading into the weekend, Ralph sits in 12th spot in the season standings, right in the middle of the 24 rider field.
