Hello, we are live here at the Press Junket for The Spelling Bee on Broadway. In just a few short minutes, we will be interviewing the stars of the Spelling Bee, and we will be putting them to the test. Stay tuned.
SPEAKER_03I'm Jabril Cook. I'm understudying Chip and Leaf and Parfait. I'm Brandon Louis Armstrong.
SPEAKER_01Cecilia Snow. I'm understudying Rona, Logan, and Olive. I'm Emily N. Rudolph, and I'm understudying Marcy, Olive, and Logan.
SPEAKER_10Okay, you guys, this is such a vibe, and all of you are such a vibe. Can you explain what is the what's the concept with adults doing the spelling bee in high school? What is what's the deal?
SPEAKER_04Are we spelling at all? We're not spelling.
SPEAKER_00This was the math leads.
SPEAKER_10Okay. So have you guys are hilarious. Have any of you understudied before?
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, I I have. I have. I have understudied, I have been understudied, I have swung, and I have gone on stage for a role that I did not prepare. Um we've done it all. I understand. And it's a big job, but it's it can be really rewarding as well, and I'm really excited to like.
SPEAKER_00She's freaking amazing. She's so good. She's so good.
SPEAKER_10Your energy, I can already feel that you're amazing without even having seen you step on stage yet. But my question for you is actually, all of you, are we would you ever be nervous about spelling a word?
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yes, and now remembering it. And I'm a horrible speller, so I I I will fail at that.
SPEAKER_06We'll have moments. We will have moments. It's so funny. You stand up there and you think you know. You're like so confident, and then you're like, hang on. And you're trying to run it back in your head and you can't keep saying the word. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_10Okay, let's do a quick spelling test. And whoever can take it. Um whoever wants to take the word just say and pass the mic to whoever wants to do it. Cat. Bat. Got it.
SPEAKER_00B A T.
SPEAKER_10Bar. Got it.
SPEAKER_00B-A-R.
SPEAKER_10Rhinoceros. Nope. I'll do it. I'll do it.
SPEAKER_05R H I N O S. A U! It's a C Oh, dang it. There's a C and rhinoceros.
SPEAKER_10That was really funny. Okay. Door. Got it. D-O-O-O.
SPEAKER_01Broadway. Got it. Oh Lord. B-R-O-A-D W A Y. Yes, let's go. Refrigerator.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I'll take it. I'll take this one. Refrigerator. R-E. F R I G E R A T O R Refrigerator.
SPEAKER_00Let's go. That's not fair. Okay. He's actually a spelling cheater. Oh, yes, he is. He actually is a spelling cheer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was trying to play it cool, but uh yeah, I'm very comfortable spelling.
SPEAKER_00It's not fair. I uh cheating.
SPEAKER_03I would never misspell cow.
SPEAKER_10That's really fierce. Wait, I want to wrap it with that because that was really awesome, you guys. That was great. You guys are awesome. I can't wait to. You are doing good. You were like our audience. I am Jasmine Amy Rogers.
SPEAKER_13My name's Felipe Arroya.
SPEAKER_10Okay, I'm obsessed with the both of you guys. How are you feeling about this process? Have you you haven't opened yet?
SPEAKER_09No, no, no, no. We are still in rehearsals. We go into tech on Friday, and I'm so excited. I was nervous coming into this. This was a character. Nervous, yeah, right. I know I was! I mean, Olive is like this quiet, shy little thing, and I've never really gotten to explore that on stage before, and so I'm really excited. Um, but yeah, it's been so much fun. Yeah.
SPEAKER_13Yeah, I'm I'm super pumped to do the show. I've done it before. This is my second time playing this character before. And so I feel like now I have a deeper understanding of it. I'm able to approach it with like maybe a little more nuance, or at least hopefully that's the case.
SPEAKER_10Um Are you ever worried about misspelling any words? Oh yeah. We do.
SPEAKER_09What do you do? You just you just hope that the person who's playing Patch uh decides to say that is correct.
SPEAKER_13And that usually that is the case, but if they want to mess with you, they'll you know sing you, and then you're done. Your story arc is done for the rest of the show. You walk off stage, you're eliminated. Like you're done. Yeah, then you're done for. I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_09No, no, they don't do that. It's an acting challenge though, to just be if you spell it wrong, you have to commit.
SPEAKER_10You have to commit. And would other cast members be laughing at you on stage? Yeah, if they know how to spell it themselves. That speaking of, we have a spelling test. Alright. So whoever would like to take it, just have the mic in front of you. Alright. Okay. Cat.
SPEAKER_09C A T Cat.
SPEAKER_10Correct. Hat.
SPEAKER_13H A T Hat.
SPEAKER_10Correct. Star. S T A R Star. Jasmine knows how to spell that because she's a star.
SPEAKER_13You saw how excited, too, when she got? Yeah, she was like, oh sorry.
SPEAKER_10No, it's fine. Broadway.
SPEAKER_13B R O A D W A Y. I got so nervous.
SPEAKER_09Correct.
SPEAKER_13Okay.
SPEAKER_09Chief. C H E I N. Oh, is it I-E? You know what?
SPEAKER_03That would have tripped me up too.
SPEAKER_09Somebody, day is done. Gone the sun. This is taps. From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky. All is well, safely wrist. Oh my god, it's not a good night. I was a girl scout.
SPEAKER_03I think you have to leave the interview note. I did.
SPEAKER_09Do I?
SPEAKER_10No. Please don't. If you want to win, you have to spell the winning word. Oh. Or how many words does the Just one. Just one? Mm-hmm. Entrepreneur. Come on. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_13Go ahead, spell that. E, N, T, R.
SPEAKER_10U. Oh my gosh. I don't mean to glorify in your failure. That was, but that was a hard.
SPEAKER_09I can't spell that. I don't think I can see it, but I don't.
SPEAKER_10You guys, I can't wait to see you on stage in this. This is going to be such a blast. It is. And congratulations. Thank you.
SPEAKER_09It's so good to see you. It's great to see you too.
SPEAKER_10I saw you over there posing. I was like, Oh Lord.
SPEAKER_09How dare you?
SPEAKER_10Are you ready for anything?
SPEAKER_07I'm ready for anything. Take me on a journey, Salisha. Alright, all right. Okay.
SPEAKER_10We'll start off easy and it'll be very chill, and then we'll see what happens.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_10Hello, what's up? I'm Salish, and I'm here with the director choreographer. Will you please introduce yourself?
SPEAKER_07Hi, I'm Danny Mefford.
SPEAKER_10How are we feeling about this process?
SPEAKER_07Oh my gosh, we're thrilled with this process, okay? I'm having the best time. Um, this is such a joyful show. I feel like you kind of can't work on this show and not have a good time. I feel that, and I feel that in your energy. Yeah, so I'm I'm I'm yeah, I don't have anything to say besides like I'm thrilled.
SPEAKER_10And also, when you were on the other side of the room, I was like, is he one of the cast members? Oh yes, you could totally be in this. Am I giving actor? It's giving, you could be anything.
SPEAKER_07Oh my god, I appreciate that. You could be anything.
SPEAKER_10You could chameleon, you could be the leadership in the room, you could be Barfi.
unknownI don't know. All right.
SPEAKER_10I do have a question for you. Okay. Okay, and so this might be an overall arching spelling bee question, or maybe it's specific. Um why are adults played in this in the production?
SPEAKER_07Do you know the history of the spelling bee perchance? Okay, so let me lay you like, but I hope I don't get this wrong. But here's the history of the spelling bee. So some people were doing like a late night improv thing where they had created these characters, and those characters became Schwartzy and Barfay and call him Barfey. But yeah, but maybe some other ones too. I can't remember exactly how many of them were in it. And then Bill Finn, the composer, was taken to this late night thing, and he saw it and was like, I want to make a musical out of this. And so then he started developing a musical. He brought Rachel Shankin, the book writer, in, and they started creating other characters and developing it with the improv people that had begun it. So that is sort of how it develops. That's the the origin story of the spelling bee.
SPEAKER_10Okay, so when you're mounting this, yeah, how do you feel about some of these words in the script?
SPEAKER_07Okay, well, look, I'm a word lover. Okay. So this is the right kind of show for me. Okay, like I love words, I love etymology. I I just uh it brings me joy, like it brings the characters in the show too. So I'm look, I love all the words. I love, you know, I'm a crossword guy. Like I like the wordplay.
SPEAKER_10Can I give you a few words to spell? Sure. Hat.
SPEAKER_07Hat H A T.
SPEAKER_10Cat.
SPEAKER_07A cat C A T.
SPEAKER_10Correct. Bar.
SPEAKER_07B A R.
SPEAKER_10Broadway.
SPEAKER_07B R O A D W A Y.
SPEAKER_10Star.
SPEAKER_07S T A R.
SPEAKER_10Chief.
SPEAKER_07I E F.
SPEAKER_10Correct. Uh Huh. Refrigerator.
SPEAKER_07R E F R I D G E R A T O R There's No D in the Middle of It. I just knew you were gonna get it, right? Sorry, sorry. You want one bonus word? Yeah.
SPEAKER_10And if you get this one, we'll give you one more.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_10Tsunami.
SPEAKER_07Tsunami. T S U N A M I.
SPEAKER_10Correct. Rhinoceros.
SPEAKER_07R-H I N O. C-E-R-A-S.
SPEAKER_10Oh, at the end.
SPEAKER_07Oh. Okay, okay, okay, okay. You really are good with this. Oh, stop it. No, that was not good. I'm embarrassed. Oh. Some of the other ones didn't do that. Well, okay, well, at least that makes me happy. But look, I never won the spelling bee when I was a kid, okay? It's not the spelling is not my special gift.
SPEAKER_10Here you are, directing and choreography.
SPEAKER_07Where are you, Renee Foster? Yeah.
SPEAKER_10You are such a good time. Congratulations. I'm so excited to see this. It's gonna be so great.
SPEAKER_07Renee, I'm sure you're in a great place. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it.
SPEAKER_02You're awesome. Okay, thank you so much.
SPEAKER_10No, thank you, and congrats.
SPEAKER_02Hello, my name is Justin Cooley, and I am playing Leaf Coney Bear.
SPEAKER_11And my name is Autumn Vest, and I'm playing Logan Schwarzen Group and ER.
SPEAKER_10Okay, I have to know how the show came into your life, this version of the show.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow. So they did it last year at the Kennedy Center.
SPEAKER_10At the Kennedy Center.
SPEAKER_02Yes, at the Kennedy Center.
SPEAKER_10Same team.
SPEAKER_02Um same creative team.
SPEAKER_10Okay.
SPEAKER_02Um but you know, a different production.
SPEAKER_11So the people in the cast are or Right, had transferred over.
SPEAKER_02Okay. But you know, it's kind of a new version as these things happen, it's it's growing and changing. Um, but I had so many friends in it last year, and I went in for it then, but I didn't do it. And then it came around a year later, and I heard it was going off Broadway, and I was like, You gotta get me in there. You gotta get me a chance. Um here I am, and and I made it.
SPEAKER_11And you? Um what wait, rephrase the question. How did it come into your life? How did this become a big thing? Oh, how did it come into my life? Um, I was on vacation and I got a self-tape, and I said, I'm not doing that, I'm so tired. And my girlfriend said, Yes, you are, it's spelling bee, and I said, You're right, you're right, you're right. And so I did the tape and I was like, no way is this happening, this would be a dream. And then I got the call back and I was like, no way is this happening. And then I got the I booked a home.
SPEAKER_02You know what I say when you really don't want to do a self-tape? It's because it's your because it's the whole thing. It's because you're six sense sensing that your life is about to change.
SPEAKER_10It's so true. It's so true. Okay, so will you tell me about your awesome? Will you tell me about your characters?
SPEAKER_11Yeah. Oh, um, my character is a little no at all, and she thinks she's better than everybody else. Is she sit mm?
SPEAKER_02He said, He said yes.
SPEAKER_11Secretly, secretly she like hates herself though, is the thing. So it's like a little bit of a double, a little bit of a double Amy. She has gay dads, um, and she loves that about herself. Right. And um they push her to be the best that she can be for better and for worse.
SPEAKER_02Great. Yeah. Um, I played Leaf Coney Bear. Um, he just kind of showed up here. Um, he doesn't know how he got there, but he is so excited to be there. He's that kid that everyone underestimates, who even underestimates himself, but there's so much in there brewing and bubbling. Yeah. And this is a show where he has the attitude, he has the gumption to bounce across the stage and and bring out a new part of himself.
SPEAKER_10And he's so cute. I can't even like your spirit is so sweet. And I'm like, are you kidding me? When you see him, you're gonna stop. No. I feel that. Oh, okay. So can I give you a couple words to spell?
SPEAKER_11Yes. I don't know that I'll get them. Alright, and you can Who's going first?
SPEAKER_02I just go yes. You go first. Yeah, make sure to use your hand.
SPEAKER_11You're okay. Hat. I can use it.
SPEAKER_02Hat you want to use your eye.
SPEAKER_11H-A-T-hat. Correct. Cat Cat.
SPEAKER_02S. C-A-T-Cat. Did I get it right? Correct!
SPEAKER_11Call back to the last minute. Dog. Dog. D-O-G-Dog. Correct. Door.
SPEAKER_02D-O-O-R door.
SPEAKER_11Correct. Chief. Chief. V-H. What? C H. Wait. Chief? She did her list. I was like, she did it.
SPEAKER_02Not her list. V-H I E F Chief? Wait, that's your character have a list? Yes. You better know, girl.
SPEAKER_10Yup, she's got a little bit. Oh my god, that's funny.
SPEAKER_11Yeah.
SPEAKER_10Okay. Wait, can you spell it again though? I didn't actually listen. F-H-I-E-F chief. Correct. Thank you. Tsunami.
SPEAKER_02In character. Yes.
SPEAKER_10Tsunami.
SPEAKER_02C U F Tsunami! And that's when I get out. T S-U-N-A-A-M-I.
SPEAKER_10Correct. We would give him, I'll give him that one because no speller can get up on another speller's lost. We gotta see it through. Refrigerator.
SPEAKER_02If she gets it, it's over.
SPEAKER_11Refrigerator. R-I. R I got an I, uh.
SPEAKER_02Alright, I'm gonna win. Okay. One more, one more.
SPEAKER_11It's R-E- Wait, you're R-I. I said R-I the first time. Twice. No, I did not! Yes, you did. No, I did not. Wait, that's awesome. No. Sorry. I'm so sorry. This is so embarrassing.
SPEAKER_10Is this one for the win? Is that how it goes?
SPEAKER_02It is, it is.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, no one can get out on a loss, so yeah, keep going for it.
SPEAKER_10Rhinoceros.
SPEAKER_02R H I N O C E R O S. Rhinoceros.
SPEAKER_03Why do you know that?
SPEAKER_11Shut the bottom.
SPEAKER_02One thing, Matt me, is I know my exotic animals.
SPEAKER_11This is ridiculous! I didn't get to study these beforehand. Not fair.
SPEAKER_02You guys spelling be the musical.
SPEAKER_10Congratulations. And thank you for stopping by the Silicia Show. And can that was good.
SPEAKER_08I'm Jason Kravitz. I'm playing Vice Principal Panch.
SPEAKER_12I am Matt Manuel, and I'm playing Mitch Mahoney.
SPEAKER_10This is so fierce. First of all, I saw you sitting over there. I was like, it was a whole live. Did you see him? I did not see him.
SPEAKER_08He was like, Oh, I believe it. I believe it.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, well, you know. My modeling coach was my aunt, and she did not play no games.
SPEAKER_08Come on.
SPEAKER_12And I'm so aware of a camera, you will not ever catch me slipping.
SPEAKER_08My modeling coach was also my aunt, and that was a problem. That was horrible. Yeah. That did not go well. What kind of principal are you in this show? Vice principal.
SPEAKER_10Vice princip Oh oh that's a bad guy, right?
SPEAKER_08It's uh it's no, it's just a sore spot for this character. Oh. Vice Principal Panch. Well, I Vice Principal Panch used to host the B. He used to be in charge of all the words and the definitions and the sentences. And then about five years prior to the show here, prior to this this uh this time, he had an unfortunate incident, which we don't discuss. And this is his first year back, so he's working very hard to get it right. Okay.
SPEAKER_10Yes. Oh, we know this person. Oh, yes. We know this person.
SPEAKER_08Oh, it makes yeah, we all know these people.
SPEAKER_10And what about your character? Mitch Mahoney?
SPEAKER_12Mitch Mahoney is kind of going through a transition in life, you know. He you'll see him how he imagined his life and what he imagines life to be. You're actually gonna meet him on his first day in education. And so he is just kind of in awe of these kids. He's never worked with kids, he doesn't know, like he's a comfort counselor. He's not one of the spellers, he is not, he is the man that when you get out, he gives you a juice box and walks you off the stage. Yes, yes, that's his job, and he doesn't necessarily know how to be warm, and so he's learning how to connect, and as these kids who he thinks are very weird, to be honest, like he's watching these kids and he ends up kind of rooting and cheering for them. And so you really see his arc of like learning to feel and learning his second passion, which is pretty cool.
SPEAKER_10Okay, I was gonna ask because I feel like you're naturally warm.
SPEAKER_12Yeah.
SPEAKER_10So how do you not be warm on stage?
SPEAKER_12Um, I mean, I have a lot of siblings, so I just pretend all my siblings are on stage. I'm kidding. That is terrible. But I really funny and but you know, sometimes you have to just be like like that. And so the hardest part to me of the show is it is such a funny show, and everybody's so good at their job to pretend that the things that are coming out of people's mouths aren't funny is like it feels like treason. Like it's hard.
SPEAKER_10And if somebody actually have you ever caught any of your castmates misspelling a word that they were supposed to spell correctly?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, we're early in rehearsals. We don't, you know, we don't pick on that right now. Not right now, we will. And by the way, this is a difficult role for Matt because he is a really warm person. And so having to watch him like be a bad guy, I don't know. He doesn't love it, I don't think, but he's good at it. He can do it.
SPEAKER_10May I give you some words to spell? You can try, even though you won't be spelling in the show.
SPEAKER_08Uh, sure. Cat C A T.
SPEAKER_10Correct.
SPEAKER_08Oh, not bad. Pressure's on.
SPEAKER_10Dog.
SPEAKER_08I'm gonna go with D-O-G.
SPEAKER_10Correct.
SPEAKER_08Excellent. Two for two.
SPEAKER_10Star.
SPEAKER_12S T A R R.
SPEAKER_10R R.
SPEAKER_08I was gonna I was gonna go with M-A-T-T-Star. Woo! You can see it, don't you? You see it.
SPEAKER_10Broadway.
SPEAKER_08You don't spell Broadway, you do Broadway.
SPEAKER_10Oh my god.
SPEAKER_08Broadway. B-R O A D W A Y, baby.
SPEAKER_10Oh my god, you're awesome.

SPEAKER_10Sorry.
SPEAKER_12Ooh. I just call it a fridge. My bad. Dag Nabit.
SPEAKER_10You're not the first one to put a D in it.
SPEAKER_12I know! That was not that! Wait, isn't there a brand? Frigidaire. Frigidaire. That's what it is.
SPEAKER_08And when you spell fridge, you spell it with a D, which is funny. You know what?
SPEAKER_10That's true. It's true.
SPEAKER_08I give him half points.
SPEAKER_10That was um a trick word. I give you half half points. For the winning word.
SPEAKER_08For the winning word.
SPEAKER_10Entrepreneur.
SPEAKER_08Entrepreneur. Entrepreneur. You can help me. E N T R E P R E N E U R.
SPEAKER_10Wick it, wick it, wick it. You guys, that was great. That was pretty good and great teamwork. I'm excited to see this show. This is gonna be such a box. Oh, me. I think so too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Congrats, you guys. Thank you. Awesome. I'm really excited for you. And also, good job with those words. I tricked you with refrigerator. I know. It's not. I know.
