SPEAKER_10

Hello, we are live here at the Press Junket for The Spelling Bee on Broadway. In just a few short minutes, we will be interviewing the stars of the Spelling Bee, and we will be putting them to the test. Stay tuned.

SPEAKER_03

I'm Jabril Cook. I'm understudying Chip and Leaf and Parfait. I'm Brandon Louis Armstrong.

SPEAKER_01

Cecilia Snow. I'm understudying Rona, Logan, and Olive. I'm Emily N. Rudolph, and I'm understudying Marcy, Olive, and Logan.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, you guys, this is such a vibe, and all of you are such a vibe. Can you explain what is the what's the concept with adults doing the spelling bee in high school? What is what's the deal?

SPEAKER_04

Are we spelling at all? We're not spelling.

SPEAKER_00

This was the math leads.

SPEAKER_10

Okay. So have you guys are hilarious. Have any of you understudied before?

SPEAKER_05

Uh yeah, I I have. I have. I have understudied, I have been understudied, I have swung, and I have gone on stage for a role that I did not prepare. Um we've done it all. I understand. And it's a big job, but it's it can be really rewarding as well, and I'm really excited to like.

SPEAKER_00

She's freaking amazing. She's so good. She's so good.

SPEAKER_10

Your energy, I can already feel that you're amazing without even having seen you step on stage yet. But my question for you is actually, all of you, are we would you ever be nervous about spelling a word?

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yes, and now remembering it. And I'm a horrible speller, so I I I will fail at that.

SPEAKER_06

We'll have moments. We will have moments. It's so funny. You stand up there and you think you know. You're like so confident, and then you're like, hang on. And you're trying to run it back in your head and you can't keep saying the word. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, let's do a quick spelling test. And whoever can take it. Um whoever wants to take the word just say and pass the mic to whoever wants to do it. Cat. Bat. Got it.

SPEAKER_00

B A T.

SPEAKER_10

Bar. Got it.

SPEAKER_00

B-A-R.

SPEAKER_10

Rhinoceros. Nope. I'll do it. I'll do it.

SPEAKER_05

R H I N O S. A U! It's a C Oh, dang it. There's a C and rhinoceros.

SPEAKER_10

That was really funny. Okay. Door. Got it. D-O-O-O.

SPEAKER_01

Broadway. Got it. Oh Lord. B-R-O-A-D W A Y. Yes, let's go. Refrigerator.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, I'll take it. I'll take this one. Refrigerator. R-E. F R I G E R A T O R Refrigerator.

SPEAKER_00

Let's go. That's not fair. Okay. He's actually a spelling cheater. Oh, yes, he is. He actually is a spelling cheer.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I was trying to play it cool, but uh yeah, I'm very comfortable spelling.

SPEAKER_00

It's not fair. I uh cheating.

SPEAKER_03

I would never misspell cow.

SPEAKER_10

That's really fierce. Wait, I want to wrap it with that because that was really awesome, you guys. That was great. You guys are awesome. I can't wait to. You are doing good. You were like our audience. I am Jasmine Amy Rogers.

SPEAKER_13

My name's Felipe Arroya.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, I'm obsessed with the both of you guys. How are you feeling about this process? Have you you haven't opened yet?

SPEAKER_09

No, no, no, no. We are still in rehearsals. We go into tech on Friday, and I'm so excited. I was nervous coming into this. This was a character. Nervous, yeah, right. I know I was! I mean, Olive is like this quiet, shy little thing, and I've never really gotten to explore that on stage before, and so I'm really excited. Um, but yeah, it's been so much fun. Yeah.

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, I'm I'm super pumped to do the show. I've done it before. This is my second time playing this character before. And so I feel like now I have a deeper understanding of it. I'm able to approach it with like maybe a little more nuance, or at least hopefully that's the case.

SPEAKER_10

Um Are you ever worried about misspelling any words? Oh yeah. We do.

SPEAKER_09

What do you do? You just you just hope that the person who's playing Patch uh decides to say that is correct.

SPEAKER_13

And that usually that is the case, but if they want to mess with you, they'll you know sing you, and then you're done. Your story arc is done for the rest of the show. You walk off stage, you're eliminated. Like you're done. Yeah, then you're done for. I'm just kidding.

SPEAKER_09

No, no, they don't do that. It's an acting challenge though, to just be if you spell it wrong, you have to commit.

SPEAKER_10

You have to commit. And would other cast members be laughing at you on stage? Yeah, if they know how to spell it themselves. That speaking of, we have a spelling test. Alright. So whoever would like to take it, just have the mic in front of you. Alright. Okay. Cat.

SPEAKER_09

C A T Cat.

SPEAKER_10

Correct. Hat.

SPEAKER_13

H A T Hat.

SPEAKER_10

Correct. Star. S T A R Star. Jasmine knows how to spell that because she's a star.

SPEAKER_13

You saw how excited, too, when she got? Yeah, she was like, oh sorry.

SPEAKER_10

No, it's fine. Broadway.

SPEAKER_13

B R O A D W A Y. I got so nervous.

SPEAKER_09

Correct.

SPEAKER_13

Okay.

SPEAKER_09

Chief. C H E I N. Oh, is it I-E? You know what?

SPEAKER_03

That would have tripped me up too.

SPEAKER_09

Somebody, day is done. Gone the sun. This is taps. From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky. All is well, safely wrist. Oh my god, it's not a good night. I was a girl scout.

SPEAKER_03

I think you have to leave the interview note. I did.

SPEAKER_09

Do I?

SPEAKER_10

No. Please don't. If you want to win, you have to spell the winning word. Oh. Or how many words does the Just one. Just one? Mm-hmm. Entrepreneur. Come on. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_13

Go ahead, spell that. E, N, T, R.

SPEAKER_10

U. Oh my gosh. I don't mean to glorify in your failure. That was, but that was a hard.

SPEAKER_09

I can't spell that. I don't think I can see it, but I don't.

SPEAKER_10

You guys, I can't wait to see you on stage in this. This is going to be such a blast. It is. And congratulations. Thank you.

SPEAKER_09

It's so good to see you. It's great to see you too.

SPEAKER_10

I saw you over there posing. I was like, Oh Lord.

SPEAKER_09

How dare you?

SPEAKER_10

Are you ready for anything?

SPEAKER_07

I'm ready for anything. Take me on a journey, Salisha. Alright, all right. Okay.

SPEAKER_10

We'll start off easy and it'll be very chill, and then we'll see what happens.

SPEAKER_07

Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Hello, what's up? I'm Salish, and I'm here with the director choreographer. Will you please introduce yourself?

SPEAKER_07

Hi, I'm Danny Mefford.

SPEAKER_10

How are we feeling about this process?

SPEAKER_07

Oh my gosh, we're thrilled with this process, okay? I'm having the best time. Um, this is such a joyful show. I feel like you kind of can't work on this show and not have a good time. I feel that, and I feel that in your energy. Yeah, so I'm I'm I'm yeah, I don't have anything to say besides like I'm thrilled.

SPEAKER_10

And also, when you were on the other side of the room, I was like, is he one of the cast members? Oh yes, you could totally be in this. Am I giving actor? It's giving, you could be anything.

SPEAKER_07

Oh my god, I appreciate that. You could be anything.

SPEAKER_10

You could chameleon, you could be the leadership in the room, you could be Barfi.

unknown

I don't know. All right.

SPEAKER_10

I do have a question for you. Okay. Okay, and so this might be an overall arching spelling bee question, or maybe it's specific. Um why are adults played in this in the production?

SPEAKER_07

Do you know the history of the spelling bee perchance? Okay, so let me lay you like, but I hope I don't get this wrong. But here's the history of the spelling bee. So some people were doing like a late night improv thing where they had created these characters, and those characters became Schwartzy and Barfay and call him Barfey. But yeah, but maybe some other ones too. I can't remember exactly how many of them were in it. And then Bill Finn, the composer, was taken to this late night thing, and he saw it and was like, I want to make a musical out of this. And so then he started developing a musical. He brought Rachel Shankin, the book writer, in, and they started creating other characters and developing it with the improv people that had begun it. So that is sort of how it develops. That's the the origin story of the spelling bee.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, so when you're mounting this, yeah, how do you feel about some of these words in the script?

SPEAKER_07

Okay, well, look, I'm a word lover. Okay. So this is the right kind of show for me. Okay, like I love words, I love etymology. I I just uh it brings me joy, like it brings the characters in the show too. So I'm look, I love all the words. I love, you know, I'm a crossword guy. Like I like the wordplay.

SPEAKER_10

Can I give you a few words to spell? Sure. Hat.

SPEAKER_07

Hat H A T.

SPEAKER_10

Cat.

SPEAKER_07

A cat C A T.

SPEAKER_10

Correct. Bar.

SPEAKER_07

B A R.

SPEAKER_10

SPEAKER_07

SPEAKER_10

SPEAKER_07

SPEAKER_10

SPEAKER_07

SPEAKER_10

SPEAKER_07

SPEAKER_10

And if you get this one, we'll give you one more.

SPEAKER_07

SPEAKER_10

Tsunami.

SPEAKER_07

Tsunami. T S U N A M I.

SPEAKER_10

Correct. Rhinoceros.

SPEAKER_07

R-H I N O. C-E-R-A-S.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, at the end.

SPEAKER_07

Oh. Okay, okay, okay, okay. You really are good with this. Oh, stop it. No, that was not good. I'm embarrassed. Oh. Some of the other ones didn't do that. Well, okay, well, at least that makes me happy. But look, I never won the spelling bee when I was a kid, okay? It's not the spelling is not my special gift.

SPEAKER_10

Here you are, directing and choreography.

SPEAKER_07

Where are you, Renee Foster? Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

You are such a good time. Congratulations. I'm so excited to see this. It's gonna be so great.

SPEAKER_07

Renee, I'm sure you're in a great place. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it.

SPEAKER_02

You're awesome. Okay, thank you so much.

SPEAKER_10

No, thank you, and congrats.

SPEAKER_02

Hello, my name is Justin Cooley, and I am playing Leaf Coney Bear.

SPEAKER_11

And my name is Autumn Vest, and I'm playing Logan Schwarzen Group and ER.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, I have to know how the show came into your life, this version of the show.

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow. So they did it last year at the Kennedy Center.

SPEAKER_10

At the Kennedy Center.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, at the Kennedy Center.

SPEAKER_10

Same team.

SPEAKER_02

Um same creative team.

SPEAKER_10

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Um but you know, a different production.

SPEAKER_11

So the people in the cast are or Right, had transferred over.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. But you know, it's kind of a new version as these things happen, it's it's growing and changing. Um, but I had so many friends in it last year, and I went in for it then, but I didn't do it. And then it came around a year later, and I heard it was going off Broadway, and I was like, You gotta get me in there. You gotta get me a chance. Um here I am, and and I made it.

SPEAKER_11

And you? Um what wait, rephrase the question. How did it come into your life? How did this become a big thing? Oh, how did it come into my life? Um, I was on vacation and I got a self-tape, and I said, I'm not doing that, I'm so tired. And my girlfriend said, Yes, you are, it's spelling bee, and I said, You're right, you're right, you're right. And so I did the tape and I was like, no way is this happening, this would be a dream. And then I got the call back and I was like, no way is this happening. And then I got the I booked a home.

SPEAKER_02

You know what I say when you really don't want to do a self-tape? It's because it's your because it's the whole thing. It's because you're six sense sensing that your life is about to change.

SPEAKER_10

It's so true. It's so true. Okay, so will you tell me about your awesome? Will you tell me about your characters?

SPEAKER_11

Yeah. Oh, um, my character is a little no at all, and she thinks she's better than everybody else. Is she sit mm?

SPEAKER_02

He said, He said yes.

SPEAKER_11

Secretly, secretly she like hates herself though, is the thing. So it's like a little bit of a double, a little bit of a double Amy. She has gay dads, um, and she loves that about herself. Right. And um they push her to be the best that she can be for better and for worse.

SPEAKER_02

Great. Yeah. Um, I played Leaf Coney Bear. Um, he just kind of showed up here. Um, he doesn't know how he got there, but he is so excited to be there. He's that kid that everyone underestimates, who even underestimates himself, but there's so much in there brewing and bubbling. Yeah. And this is a show where he has the attitude, he has the gumption to bounce across the stage and and bring out a new part of himself.

SPEAKER_10

And he's so cute. I can't even like your spirit is so sweet. And I'm like, are you kidding me? When you see him, you're gonna stop. No. I feel that. Oh, okay. So can I give you a couple words to spell?

SPEAKER_11

Yes. I don't know that I'll get them. Alright, and you can Who's going first?

SPEAKER_02

I just go yes. You go first. Yeah, make sure to use your hand.

SPEAKER_11

You're okay. Hat. I can use it.

SPEAKER_02

Hat you want to use your eye.

SPEAKER_11

H-A-T-hat. Correct. Cat Cat.

SPEAKER_02

S. C-A-T-Cat. Did I get it right? Correct!

SPEAKER_11

Call back to the last minute. Dog. Dog. D-O-G-Dog. Correct. Door.

SPEAKER_02

D-O-O-R door.

SPEAKER_11

Correct. Chief. Chief. V-H. What? C H. Wait. Chief? She did her list. I was like, she did it.

SPEAKER_02

Not her list. V-H I E F Chief? Wait, that's your character have a list? Yes. You better know, girl.

SPEAKER_10

Yup, she's got a little bit. Oh my god, that's funny.

SPEAKER_11

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Okay. Wait, can you spell it again though? I didn't actually listen. F-H-I-E-F chief. Correct. Thank you. Tsunami.

SPEAKER_02

In character. Yes.

SPEAKER_10

Tsunami.

SPEAKER_02

C U F Tsunami! And that's when I get out. T S-U-N-A-A-M-I.

SPEAKER_10

Correct. We would give him, I'll give him that one because no speller can get up on another speller's lost. We gotta see it through. Refrigerator.

SPEAKER_02

If she gets it, it's over.

SPEAKER_11

Refrigerator. R-I. R I got an I, uh.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, I'm gonna win. Okay. One more, one more.

SPEAKER_11

It's R-E- Wait, you're R-I. I said R-I the first time. Twice. No, I did not! Yes, you did. No, I did not. Wait, that's awesome. No. Sorry. I'm so sorry. This is so embarrassing.

SPEAKER_10

Is this one for the win? Is that how it goes?

SPEAKER_02

It is, it is.

SPEAKER_11

Yeah, no one can get out on a loss, so yeah, keep going for it.

SPEAKER_10

Rhinoceros.

SPEAKER_02

R H I N O C E R O S. Rhinoceros.

SPEAKER_03

Why do you know that?

SPEAKER_11

Shut the bottom.

SPEAKER_02

One thing, Matt me, is I know my exotic animals.

SPEAKER_11

This is ridiculous! I didn't get to study these beforehand. Not fair.

SPEAKER_02

You guys spelling be the musical.

SPEAKER_10

Congratulations. And thank you for stopping by the Silicia Show. And can that was good.

SPEAKER_08

I'm Jason Kravitz. I'm playing Vice Principal Panch.

SPEAKER_12

I am Matt Manuel, and I'm playing Mitch Mahoney.

SPEAKER_10

This is so fierce. First of all, I saw you sitting over there. I was like, it was a whole live. Did you see him? I did not see him.

SPEAKER_08

He was like, Oh, I believe it. I believe it.

SPEAKER_12

Yeah, well, you know. My modeling coach was my aunt, and she did not play no games.

SPEAKER_08

Come on.

SPEAKER_12

And I'm so aware of a camera, you will not ever catch me slipping.

SPEAKER_08

My modeling coach was also my aunt, and that was a problem. That was horrible. Yeah. That did not go well. What kind of principal are you in this show? Vice principal.

SPEAKER_10

Vice princip Oh oh that's a bad guy, right?

SPEAKER_08

It's uh it's no, it's just a sore spot for this character. Oh. Vice Principal Panch. Well, I Vice Principal Panch used to host the B. He used to be in charge of all the words and the definitions and the sentences. And then about five years prior to the show here, prior to this this uh this time, he had an unfortunate incident, which we don't discuss. And this is his first year back, so he's working very hard to get it right. Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Yes. Oh, we know this person. Oh, yes. We know this person.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, it makes yeah, we all know these people.

SPEAKER_10

And what about your character? Mitch Mahoney?

SPEAKER_12

Mitch Mahoney is kind of going through a transition in life, you know. He you'll see him how he imagined his life and what he imagines life to be. You're actually gonna meet him on his first day in education. And so he is just kind of in awe of these kids. He's never worked with kids, he doesn't know, like he's a comfort counselor. He's not one of the spellers, he is not, he is the man that when you get out, he gives you a juice box and walks you off the stage. Yes, yes, that's his job, and he doesn't necessarily know how to be warm, and so he's learning how to connect, and as these kids who he thinks are very weird, to be honest, like he's watching these kids and he ends up kind of rooting and cheering for them. And so you really see his arc of like learning to feel and learning his second passion, which is pretty cool.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, I was gonna ask because I feel like you're naturally warm.

SPEAKER_12

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

So how do you not be warm on stage?

SPEAKER_12

Um, I mean, I have a lot of siblings, so I just pretend all my siblings are on stage. I'm kidding. That is terrible. But I really funny and but you know, sometimes you have to just be like like that. And so the hardest part to me of the show is it is such a funny show, and everybody's so good at their job to pretend that the things that are coming out of people's mouths aren't funny is like it feels like treason. Like it's hard.

SPEAKER_10

And if somebody actually have you ever caught any of your castmates misspelling a word that they were supposed to spell correctly?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, we're early in rehearsals. We don't, you know, we don't pick on that right now. Not right now, we will. And by the way, this is a difficult role for Matt because he is a really warm person. And so having to watch him like be a bad guy, I don't know. He doesn't love it, I don't think, but he's good at it. He can do it.

SPEAKER_10

May I give you some words to spell? You can try, even though you won't be spelling in the show.

SPEAKER_08

Uh, sure. Cat C A T.

SPEAKER_10

Correct.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, not bad. Pressure's on.

SPEAKER_10

Dog.

SPEAKER_08

I'm gonna go with D-O-G.

SPEAKER_10

You're not the first one to put a D in it.

SPEAKER_12

I know! That was not that! Wait, isn't there a brand? Frigidaire. Frigidaire. That's what it is.

SPEAKER_08

And when you spell fridge, you spell it with a D, which is funny. You know what?

SPEAKER_10

That's true. It's true.

SPEAKER_08

I give him half points.

SPEAKER_10

That was um a trick word. I give you half half points. For the winning word.

SPEAKER_08

For the winning word.

SPEAKER_10

Entrepreneur.

SPEAKER_08

Entrepreneur. Entrepreneur. You can help me. E N T R E P R E N E U R.

Congrats, you guys. Thank you. Awesome. I'm really excited for you. And also, good job with those words. I tricked you with refrigerator. I know. It's not. I know.
