In the Name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
St. Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast day the Church celebrates on July 31st, teaches us that a meaningful life begins with paying attention to how God is present in everyday experiences. Rather than seeking God only in extraordinary moments, he encouraged people to reflect on their daily lives, recognizing moments of gratitude, struggle, joy, and failure as opportunities for spiritual growth.
One of the most powerful lessons from St. Ignatius is the importance of discernment. In a world filled with distractions and constant demands, his example reminds us to slow down, pray, and ask whether our decisions lead us toward greater love, compassion, and service to the dear neighbor.
His life also demonstrates the transformative power of surrender. After being seriously wounded in battle, St. Ignatius's dreams of military glory gave way to a deeper calling. Instead of allowing disappointment to define him, he embraced a new purpose centered on serving God and helping others. His journey shows that setbacks can become turning points when we remain open to growth and grace.
Ultimately, St. Ignatius reminds us that holiness is not about perfection but about continually seeking God with an open heart and responding generously to His call. By practicing gratitude, discernment, and service, we can live with greater purpose and become instruments of hope and love in the lives of others. We pray his prayer of surrender today:
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will - all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me. Amen. St. Joseph, Pray for Us.
