Hey, welcome back to the Second Chance Podcast. My name is Christian. My name is Evan. And we're so glad that you're here. Woo! Uh, it's been a little bit of a pause. Um, probably what, a couple weeks since our last episode. Maybe even a month. Maybe it has been a little bit just a ton going on. And uh, but here we are, and um there's still a lot going on, but you know what? We were like, yes, let's make time. Yeah. For what matters most. So um a little brief recap. Evan, do you want to give us a bit of a recap of the last episode?

I will do my best. I know we went over promises about how to keep promises and some of the promises that were made that should not have been made in the first place. Like there was what was it? What was the Abimalek? Abimelech? Abimel I I can't remember. Abimelech. It was Abimelech. Abimelech, Abimelech. Judges 11, 29 to 40 is what it was. Yeah. The one where um his daughter walks out of the house and he's like, Well, I made a bad decision.

Yeah, because he had made a promise to sacrifice whatever came out first. Which was a real bad move. Yeah, super rash, uh, a bit silly, uh, and foolish at the exact same time. Oh, yeah. But uh yeah, so it's important to keep promises, uh, but also be careful how you make them. Yes, that's right. And uh you also had a men's conference that you attended. I did have a men's conference. You want to give us a little download about that?

We had a couple people speak at the men's conference. There was uh oh, I don't know if it was Lennock or Lemmeck or Lammock. Lemmeck? Yeah, Lammock, because when you told me that I was like, what? Buddy from the Bible. Right. Okay. So that was there's a guy who's talking over Zoom, Lammock. He's very passionate about what he does, you can tell. Even over Zoom. But um it was great. Got to meet a lot of new people, got to open up a bit to some people that I didn't think I would open up to. Just a lot of open doors. Nice and it was fun. Sweet, awesome, indeed. And ribs and chicken. Oh, just ribs and chicken. Or no, not ribs and chicken. Wings wings, yes. Wings. Good though? Chicken wings. Chicken wings. Chicken wings. Nice. They were good. Are you a hot sauce kind of guy? Or are you more like sweet? If it is hot, it's mild. Gotcha. Not too much.

Okay. About um which was God's narrative or which was God's story, or something like that. And he was like going between the two, and it was pretty cool. Because they both had like sort of a similar story where they were kind of done wrong, that they were just trying to do their best pretty much the whole time and were kind of s screwed over. A little interesting. Yeah. I don't know a whole lot about Caleb, but I do know Uriah's story, and that was pretty much.

Yeah. Um, for those of you that don't know about Uriah, Uriah was um one of King David's mighty men. Yeah. And he had a beautiful wife named Bathsheba. While Uriah was out serving in the field, David saw Bathsheba bathing, then got with Bathsheba, then had Uriah sneakily murdered. Yeah. Uh anyway, it just got really, really messy super quick. And um, but yeah, Caleb is interesting. I like I know a bit about Caleb, but only like that he was super devoted. He was super devoted, super loyal, I should say, to Moses and Joshua. And um anyway, yeah. So today's episode. Yeah, what's happening today? Okay. So we have um, as many of you that have been listening to us know, we do a segment every episode called Um Davakim. And Davakim is like in the middle, it's like randomness. And so we have these random topics. So we asked a few people, uh, we got a couple of responses back, and um we're actually gonna go ahead and talk about the first one. And Evan, I'm gonna ask you the first Davakem. So this episode is actually gonna be fully dedicated to Davakems. Um, and the first one that I'm going to drop is gonna be for you, Evan. Okay. So this is from our loyal listener, Taryn. Uh he is uh one of the guys that's stuck with us since the beginning. You're answering this too, by the way. Oh, yes. You're not dodging it. Oh, yeah. Okay. All right, okay. Ready? So it's actually two. I think it's uh I think you give us two. Oh, okay. Yeah. First one. Well, I do remember this one definitely. Places to go in Newfoundland. Places to go in Newfoundland. Some of you listening may have never been to Newfoundland in Labrador. Uh, you may not even know where we're located. Some of you may know all too well. Yes. Some of you know too much. So, okay, places to go. Um, it's actually really funny because I just had a random thought. Complete shout-out. We're not taking over anyone else's show, but this used to be a thing with NTV, places to go with Sharon Snow.

What do you look for on this beautiful island? Because in particular, we're talking about Newfoundland. Yes, we got Labrador. I've been to Labrador, but I've never even been to Labrador.

Okay. Um, so if it was me, one thing that if I was someone who'd never been to Newfoundland before, my the first thing that would intrigue me is um the Tablelands. Have you ever heard of the Table Lands? I have. It's the only it's one of two places on Earth, I think, where you can reach the the mantle, like the little bit, the layer of earth under the crust. So where exactly on the island is this? That's a good question. I can't remember the name of the place. Oh but it sounds like Grossmorne. Yeah, that's what it is. Gross Morn. Okay. That's yeah. Yep. I stayed there for about a week with mom and one of my buddies, and it was it was pretty fun. It was cute. It was a close, like it was only a little small community, but there was places to stay. We weren't like bored at all when we were there. You climb any of the mountains? Uh we started climbing it the day that we left, and it was really gross out the day that we left, so we got up like maybe twenty five feet. Oh yeah. Nice. They have a sign there. Yep. No, they don't. I'm not gonna say that. Okay. I'm not gonna admit to a crime. Yeah, definitely don't record it. They didn't want you to take any rocks, but I took a little tiny rock. I'm sorry. It's fine. It they're not gonna ask for it back next year, no. I'm gonna call it one.

Yeah, 100% is the way it would be. Yeah. Um, so anywhere else that you'd go? So we got Gross Mourne. For those of you that don't know about S2, that's the west coast of Newfoundland heading up towards the northern peninsula. Beautiful spot, one of the national parks. Yes, yes. Um, where else would you go? Um either you've been there or you want to go.

What is a signal hill is always nice. Sure. It's like smack in the middle of downtown. Yeah. Um other than that, I don't get out a whole lot. Sure. So I don't know. Yep. Other than just around where I live.

What about you? Um I've been around a lot to the islands. Um I've also been to Labrador, but I love um honestly going out to the West Coast. I just love the West Coast, like Cornerbrook. That's where my mom's family's from. Beautiful. So much to do out there, especially if you're an outdoorsy type person. Um, there's beautiful walking places and all those wonderful things. And then going up towards the northern peninsula is almost like a uh adventure, we'll say, right? It's just such a different environment up there, and the scenery is beautiful. And really, it's like all over Newfoundland. Like you go down to Bonavista, the Bonavista Peninsula down past Clarenville, beautiful down there. Um, and then of course, whatever you have on the Avalon, like we live in CBS, uh Conception Bay South, but there's like you said, Signal Hill. There's just so many beautiful places around. It's quite unique because there's so much history for Newfoundland Labrador. Uh we were the only place in World War II in North America to actually be attacked, which was on Belle Island when the German U-boat blew up the wharf on Bell Island. And uh so it's pretty neat. Just what five kilometers from here out in Conception Bay, two submarines, uh one uh each of them at different times in 1942 came in and just blew sh up ships right in the bay. Blew up two iron ore boats in early uh 1942 and came back again and did it again. It was a s and this was a different captain, different U-boat captain. Yes, but like just crazy when you think about it. Like actual action was happening five kilometers from the house, right? It's quite unique. Right on. Uh so yeah, thanks for that, Davikim, Taryn.

All right. It's not gonna be awkward. It's fine because I have the Davakem right here. I promise you. So long as I can stall for another at least 10 seconds, then I'll just have the Davakem pulled up. But it is also from Terran. I'm not even progressing, I'm just speaking. I'll rip it off from memory. No, so I didn't say anything. I was just like letting you just okay, yeah, go ahead. Um, how can certain video games affect your faith, do you think? Ooh. Yeah. Well I know one of the games that he mentioned when he brought up this question was he's big into Assassin's Creed. Yes, and there's a lot of like history backed up behind that, and there is I was doing a little bit of research on it, not a whole lot, because I didn't play a lot of Assassin's Creed growing up, but um they do have certain games where they like straight up talk about Jesus and Christianity, albeit not always in a good light, because that's not the science that they were fighting for. But it's interesting.

The first game, um, I remember playing that on Xbox uh 360. Yeah, an Xbox 360. I really enjoyed playing it. It was back in the Crusades, is when that one takes place. And uh so there's you know heavy Christian elements in that. One of the things that uh you know that they say at the beginning of that game is that you know we represent, you know, multi-faiths, right? So, you know, there was Islam in there, there was Christianity in there. Yeah, and I think that the game overall, like the Assassin's Creed games. I've played Assassin's Creed one, two, three. I never really got into Black Flag because I found personally that's where like they started getting like pretty vulgar, like there was a lot of cursing and swearing going into the game, but it's pirates, but yet historically accurate too. Like people weren't dropping F-bombs in Jesus' name all the time back in that time period. Not that I certainly know of when I've been studying history, that's just more of a modern day take and spin on stuff. But anyway, that's a whole nother rabbit hole. But um actually, let's go down a rabbit hole for a second. Uh yeah, this is the episode to rabbit hole. So, prime example. In a lot of our shows, movies, video games, um dialogue is often peppered with various curse words, right? Yep. Um, and there's no and like back in the World War II and and all those things, uh especially World War II movies. Like I remember I really want to go see Fury years ago with Brad Pitt, uh, the movie, and I didn't end up seeing it because it was just peppered with swearing. So, but that's my own personal take, okay? That's just my own personal deal. So, um, because I've my mindset is if I don't use it, why am I just sitting down and just listening to it over and over and over? Yes, there's certain movies that I've seen that has some swearing in it, obviously, uh, because it's hard not to see a movie with that in it these days, but I'm also not just constantly subjecting myself over and over. With that said, uh different series, for instance, um Band of Brothers uh Pacific. Okay. So you ever watch Band of Brothers? Nope. Okay. So Band of Brothers, early two early uh 2000s, I think maybe late 90s, or but definitely early 2000s, amazing series follows a group of soldiers, World War II. Tom um Tom uh Steven Spielberg does it, and Tom Hanks, I believe, was involved, but definitely Steven Spielberg. Okay. Anyway, they made a second band of brothers called uh Pacific, the Pacific. Okay, and that's where it follows an American group in the Pacific fighting against the Japanese. When the series was over, and uh uh this random group was interviewing an actual US veteran from that unit that that show was based on. Yeah, and they asked him, like, and how realistic was the show to your actual experience? And I'll never forget, I was reading through the transcript, and the guy said, he said it was very it's it's pretty accurate. It's like the the viol, you know, the actual fighting, yeah, the way you know we were joking around, stuff like that, whatever. He said, but there's one thing that was not realistic in it. He said, and I have to say it, because of course this is done by HBO. Yeah, and he said, We were from the Bible Belt, but we never talked the way that they made us sound like in that TV show. All the swearing. He said, our mothers would have killed us. And when I read that, because I remember as a teenager purposely not going to stuff, missing out when my friends went out because of my values that I held towards this. And I remember when I heard him say that, when I read that, I was like, this validates what I'm what I've been feeling in my own faith. But it just goes to show that a lot of this stuff is just putting in there to make it quote unquote better. Yeah. But yes, but yet one of the best movie series in all of cinematography. It had no sex scenes, no swearing, nothing in it all. That's crazy, like along those lines. And what that is, that series? The Lord of the Rings series. All-time best epic, like across the board. I think the only one that bet it was Avatar, uh, and then Titanic, but and then Endgame. But hey, whatever. Uh but the point being is that but it still has the most awards in history in a sweep. And it just goes to show you don't need it to make a good movie. That was a big rabbit hole.

Yeah, it is okay. Um, back to if I can go back, can I go back to that? Can I go back to the actual original? The qu the the question, yeah. The actual question. Okay. Yeah. So I really enjoyed the Assassin's Creed games. Um, and I I do agree that like definitely, like, there's the way that they portray Christianity in it is quite accurate in the sense of how the Crusades portrayed Christianity through the Pope, through this almost devotion to God, but for personal conquest, using God's name as a legitimate like a like I'm gonna legitimate legitimatize this. I'm gonna conquer this con this this this city and wipe it out in the name of God because we're fighting against Islam or whatever, right? Or whatever, yeah. Well, that's the main one that's in that game, right? So I can see how that could distort someone's faith, especially if you don't have a firm foundation on Christ at all. We're like, gee whiz, Christianity is all about just starting wars. Because I've heard people say that before.

Yeah. Right? I I've definitely been down that down that rabbit hole. Yeah. Not knowing a whole lot about the crusades myself or much about the Catholic Church in general. So I know a lot of people grew up around like they grew up in Catholic schools and stuff like that, and they have not all great experiences with that. And um sometimes I forget that that was a thing when I'm telling people about Jesus. It's like, oh, what about this? And I genuinely didn't know that that was a thing that was going on. And that sucks. And I can understand why a lot of people can be defensive about that. Yeah, yeah.

Well, fair enough, because you know, you got you have people and like they're getting the wrong either they're getting wrong information, yeah, and then they're forming their judgments based on that. Or, you know, they could be playing something and then are like, gee whiz, well, this is definitely you know accurate to what I've heard before. Yeah. Right. But I I think overall, like I think video games, video games can do that, but you know, I I love playing video games. I still am. Like I still do, right? I was just playing uh War Thunder there the other day and um and super super fun game. But I think with anything, if you let something swallow up your time, yeah, that can d even maybe distort your faith or maybe disrupt your faith. Yeah, for sure. What do you think?

If you're d using it if you're using it and abusing it, of course, like if that's taking the place of your Bible reading time or your prayer time, or you find you're starting to form your personality around how you feel when you're playing the game can be a a big thing.

Yeah. Personally for me, I actually don't play video games until I've spent time with the Lord. Hmm. That's good. That's my own personal standard. Yeah, fair enough. And uh and usually if I do play video games, it's probably on a and it doesn't come before like my family either. Like, you know, uh at least I definitely try not to, I should say. So, you know, for instance, like usually it's if it's a Saturday, I might play during the day a little bit while my kids are playing their video game time, or maybe I'll play in the evenings when they're gone to bed if my wife and I aren't like you know off watching a show or doing something else, right? Yeah. So um, yeah. Um, so I think as well, like as long as it doesn't push like family time.

Of course, yeah. I find my limit is when I start to notice it affecting me emotionally and mentally, it's like, okay, I gotta stop. Yeah. I know there have been times where I've been playing like a shooter game or just some game in general, and if I get really frustrated, I gotta put it down. Like I'm what am I getting upset for? Yeah. Games are supposed to be for decompress, not extra stress.

Which is interesting because I know for like when I've played World of Warships, yeah, I love World of Warships. I've been playing that since like twenty 2017, I think it is. Um you know, if I get frustrated or whatever, then I just if I lose and I really get frustrated, I just sign out. But I know that of course there's people on there, which I'm sure there's people in all gaming that that can do this at times. Uh well, we call them trolls, uh, but you know, people that just start unleashing in the voice chat or or you know, just because they're obviously frustrated. Yeah, but instead of just shutting her down, they can let you have it. You know what I mean? Yeah. And uh that that also can distort things where you know uh okay, okay, I have a story. Oh no. Okay. It's actually really interesting. Oh, okay. I remember I was playing a World of Warships battle, and you can chat in that chat, no trouble in the match. There's like uh I think it's ten or twelve players per side. Um, and your goal is to sink each other's ships. Anyway, yeah, um I was playing once, and there was a guy that was saying something to me, and I remember I said something in the chat. I don't remember what it was, but I remember it wasn't nice. I'm not like you know, I said something rude to him. And um interesting enough, when I turned the game off and I went to bed, it's one of the few times in my life that I've I had a little bit of trouble sleeping. I rarely have like, and I say few times in my life, I could probably count on one hand I've ever had trouble going to sleep. Thank God. But the reason why is my conscience was bothering me because of what I said to this guy. You know what I did? Wow. I went downstairs at like 12 at night, which you know is big for me. I turned on my computer, went into the chat, pulled up the chat history of, or pulled up the battle history so I could find the guy, right-clicked on it, and sent him a private message, and I apologized to him through private message in the game. Yeah. And I essentially said to him that I'm sorry for saying this to you, but Christ has forgiven me of much. And I should not have acted that way with you. And that's what I said. So guaranteed he got up the next morning and was like, ding, like turning on the game. It was like, what the heck? Who is this loser? Right, you know, messaging me, private messaging me and telling me about Jesus and apologizing to me, like what's wrong with him? But my conscience immediately became clear after doing that. Nice. Yeah.

Das is good. Das is sehr gut. Alright, friend. In terms of the general question, though, I think like you know, overall, if it's an idol, it can be bad. If it's affecting your mental state and how you live, that's bad. Yes. But I think it also comes down to if you spend enough time at it, you slowly start to become it. So I don't think video games in and of itself is sinful or bad, but just you know monitor monitor how much time you spend on it and what you're taking into your brain system.

And that's important because I think you're right, like the actual act of playing video games and all that stuff, like yeah, obviously, like that's not like you touched a video game, sitter, you know, it's not like that. Uh it's not like that. But I also do believe that there's standards that as followers of Christ we need to have. Like, I should not be sitting down playing a video game that's like full of language, full of like sex stuff, full of all this other stuff. For me, that's what I think of because what does it say in scripture, you know, about you know, whatever's true, whatever is holy, you know, whatever's good. Yeah, this is what you should focus on, right? And I believe definitely, you know, that um, you know, that's that's something that I I like to keep that in fresh in my mind. Sure. Here's what I'm thinking. Okay. The immediate thoughts that are in my mind are poison dart frog is probably smaller. Which means it might not be as bad, but also it would be easier to lose and to hide from me and sneak attack me. And I'm pretty sure poison dart frogs, if I'm not mistaken, even like the gooey stuff on their skin is poisonous. So like you touch it, you're gone. I think. I don't know.

Don't quote me on that. Well, I can tell you right now, they're small, brightly colored amphibians, famous for their skin toxicity, their deadly venom from their natural diet of toxic insects, insects.

I'll just give him like a I don't know, a couple crickets or something. Yeah, I'll just be regular frogs.

I remember a kid in elementary when I was in elementary too, and I went to his house once. His name was Zachary, and he had Tarantulas as his pet in his bedroom. Oh, lovely. Oh my gosh. I remember us sitting down and we were playing on, I think it was PC, Star Wars Episode 1. Yeah. He was like, I died in the first one. Um, but uh anyway, yeah, it's a good good time. So my favorite. My favorite in the movies, I would say, is Gandalf. Nice. But my favorite in the books is Sam. Cool. Sam is the backbone that keeps Frodo going.

He's like, Yeah, but we we need breakfast. He's like, You you've already had one. He's like, Yes, we've had one breakfast. What about a second breakfast? But what about a second breakfast? And uh then Aragorn just turns around and walks away. And Mary's like, I don't think he knows about a second breakfast, Pip. He's like, No, what about uh uh Levinsies, dinner, supper? I don't think he knows about those two. And all of a sudden Apple comes whipping over the thing and Mary catch catches his hand and Pippin looks up and then walk takes her one right in the head.
