SPEAKER_02

Hello, hello, and welcome back to the Second Chance Podcast. My name is Evan.

SPEAKER_00

My name is Christian.

SPEAKER_02

And my mind goes blank every time. Welcome. Welcome, welcome. This is our third and final episode of the little mini-series we've been doing called Mighty Men. Yes, sir. But before we go any further into this episode, let's do a little recap of what we did last time. Okay. So our last episode was kind of completely off the rails. It was just we were doing Davakem's the whole time. If you don't know what Davakem is, where have you been?

SPEAKER_00

That's the first thing we want to ask. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

But uh Davakem is just a silly, sometimes serious, just off-topic, maybe on topic question to just kind of smack in the middle of the episode for giggles.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. It's a nice like little breakup. It's it's it's a uh tension reliever, right? Especially if we're in a hot topic, right? It's just boom, and then something, you know, do you what kind of spaghetti do you like? Or, you know, totally, totally random stuff, right?

SPEAKER_02

We can get very uh heated isn't the word. We can get very I don't know, too, too deep into one conversation that we kind of forget that we're people for a minute. Sure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, and that's the beauty of it, right? And so yeah, you just you're right, it's super fun that we were able to go ahead and have a bunch of Davikim questions that our listeners provided to us for the most part, and then you know, we really started getting into it. By the way, now I'm gonna drop this thing that I was said I was gonna drop.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you're not doing okay. Yep. Yeah, here. Spontaneous. Spontaneous.

SPEAKER_00

Which okay, black mamba. Wait, explain to the people what you're doing before you so back in the other episode, yeah, uh, we were talking about uh pets to own. I was with the Davikim, which was actually from my daughter, and it she asked, would we rather have a poison dart frog or a black mamba? Yeah. And so we debated back and forth. You decided you wanted a poison dart frog. Absolutely. And I decided that I wanted a black mamba. Um and one of our listeners, Gord, actually called me from Ontario to tell me that you don't want a black mamba, Christian.

SPEAKER_02

That's what I'm saying. What is wrong with you?

SPEAKER_00

So, Gord, when he was in Africa, he was part of a missionary family. Yeah, when he was in Africa, he actually went to this place where this guy collected snakes. And it was like a snake museum. They're all alive. Yeah, and one of them was a black mamba. And Gord was like, you know, if you ever saw a black mamba, you'd go the other way. It's A, as we talked about in the episode, it's true, they're super fast, but I never realized how aggressive they were, like they're super feared over there. Dang. And so he told me, he was like, Christian, I can tell you right now, you don't want a black mamba. It's like what? Oh man, and uh so anyway, it was so funny he heard him because he was telling me all this stuff about black mambas um and like they're savage. So I'm going to officially retract my statement. I, out of the wise counsel of Gandalf, aka Gord, I do not want a black mamba. And to be quite honest, I really don't want a poisoned art frog.

SPEAKER_02

Well, this was the thing last episode. We said it was like if you just feed it regular food, it's just a frog.

SPEAKER_00

That is true. It it loses his poison ability because it eats insects that are poisonous.

SPEAKER_02

So anyway, and I mean in the hypothetical where the black mamba could swear its allegiance to you and not, you know. I mean, I could see why you'd want to do it then.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Uh Evan, what have you been up to this summer? Give us a little recap. Okay. So this summer, summer's really bad for me. I got real bad allergies to pollen. I think it's I can't remember if it's tree pollen or flower pollen, but either way, it's really bad during the summer. Yeah. But other than that, other than sneezing every five seconds, is uh it's been cool. Nice. It's been fun. Yeah. I did a uh first aid course for my work. Okay. I I won't say exciting, but it was it was something. It was fun. Thrilling first aid. Yeah, right. Learn some some new fun things. Yeah. No stress.

SPEAKER_00

So if I start choking on the episode, you can give me the homilik?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Okay. I should be able to. Perfect. All right. Please don't test that. Yeah. Don't choke on something just with it in mind. Like, oh.

SPEAKER_00

And we'll make sure we pause the episode so you guys don't have to listen. No, we'll keep it running. Um I uh my summer's been pretty good. I got back from Boston uh on the 28th, I think it was. Excuse me. I went down for a history tour with my brother, and it was really cool. Yeah. Yeah, went to this place called Battleship Cove. Bunch of uh warships there, and one of them was the big, what they call the Big Mammy, or Big Mammy, sorry, Big Mammy, Big Mammy, which is the Massachusetts uh World War II American ship, uh warship that fought in um over by Inojima and Okinawa in in the Pacific theater and then took on kamikaze fighters and everything. It was just a really cool ship. We were on this another one, uh, a submarine called the Lionfish, which was ridiculously creepy because you're we're not deep down underwater in in obviously because it's just a part of the museum, but it's in the water, it's actually in like a bay. Oh but when you go in it, it feels so tight. Oh yeah. And I can't imagine these sailors going like a hundred feet, a hundred and fifty feet below the water, and then the last thing that you know if you happen to die in one of these things is this sub going down and you're just stuck in a tin can, you're not getting out of it. Couldn't be me. Oh man, I tell you. Anyway, total respect for those guys. Um total random note. Fifty-two United States submarines were sunk in World War II with three thousand one hundred and thirty-four servicemen on it. Yes, but a lot of young men gave their lives into submarine units, uh, into submarine arm, because again, if you if you get hit when you're down in the water, that's just gonna start sinking. Unless you happen to blow the ballast, you can get up to the top. But anyway, and then we're also on another one called the Joseph Um, I think it's R. Kennedy, which was a destroyer just after World War II. Oh, wow. Amazing, and as I clew up, we had a Vietnam sailor who gave us a tour of the ships. Yeah, self-guided tour, and he offered us to different parts of that ship. It was amazing. So I had a cool trip. Yep. Nice, cool. Uh, so today we're excited, as Evan said already. This is gonna be the last episode in the Mighty Men series, and today we're going to be reading a couple of different sections. I'm gonna do the first one, and then Evan's gonna do the second. And the first one, um, you know, we talked about uh mighty men from the Bible, uh the Old Testament in particular. However, today it's gonna be a little bit different. Just a tiny bit. Just a tiny bit. Today's mighty men that we've chosen are the disciples. Indeed. Um, the reason why they are the mighty men is that because if it wasn't for the disciples and their obedience, then we wouldn't have the gospels written. This is true. This is true, and so they are mighty, not just because they followed Jesus, not just because they're men. Exactly, but because when Jesus died and rose again and went to heaven, they continued on the ministry that he told them to do, but they also recorded it. Yes, and that was major because otherwise it just would have died, excuse me, it would have those moments would have been in memory and uh we'll call oral tradition, right? Just orally talking about something, yeah, not in actual written form. So anyway, something I wanted to read here just for a moment is in John chapter 21, it's called the epilogue, where Jesus appears to the seven disciples. Um, and you know it says seven, not twelve, because there was only seven at this moment where he appeared to. Um, but what's really cool is this Towards the end of chapter 21, verse 24, it says this This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. When it by the way, when it says this disciple, John, it's John. John often referred to himself in like third person, the one that Jesus loved, okay, or the disciple, okay? So it says this disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here, and we know that his account of these things is accurate. Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. I love that verse. That's cool. That's remarkable because that gives us a heads up. We have but a surface scraped of what happened. Yeah. Now, it's a very important surface that was scraped. Of course. Okay, because that's the main things that we know that are recorded in the four gospels. Yep. Little note uh Matthew, Mark, and John uh are the gospels that of course follow uh like they were there. Now Mark was not, um, in the sense like he is not actually a disciple. That was based on Peter, yeah, Peter's account.

SPEAKER_02

Mark wrote it down, but he got his information from Peter, I think is what it was.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, it's like scribing for someone, essentially, right? Um, and then we have the outlier, which is Luke, and Luke was an apostle, but he was not a disciple, he was a doctor, and he wrote down. But what's beautiful and what I love the most about the gospels and why these men are mighty men is because they wrote a lot of this down decades after it happened.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like writing an account, a story, just the same as you know, for many of our listeners. Maybe you've listened to a uh or read a book about someone's testimony about something. Maybe they're writing about like I was there at 9-11, okay, back when the Twin Towers were hit, and they write that 25 years later. Yeah. Does that mean it's not accurate? No, not at all. It's just this is this person's account.

SPEAKER_02

For sure.

SPEAKER_00

Right?

SPEAKER_02

I find it funny how some people point to little tiny discrepancies between the four gospels and say, Oh, it can't be true. Yes. Because this person said there's two people, this person said there's one person, this one said yellow, this one said orange. Yeah. But like you write something down 25 years after it happened.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. And the beautiful part about that, Evan, is that it's um there's a certain word for it, which I can't remember right now, but it's where inaccuracies that are recorded, but yet where we know both people were there and they saw the main thing, it actually reinforces the fact of its legitimacy rather than pointing out as an error that they're wrong. Right? And like you said, one of the examples is famous. They got two gospels. One of them says, you know, take an extra pair of sandals, take an extra cloak, take an extra bit of money, and another gospel says, Don't take an extra pair of sandals, don't take an extra cloak, and don't take any money. And I've had I've actually I actually spoke to someone before that debated with me about this and was like, that's not legitimate. Just look at the mistakes there. And I was like, How can that be? It's like me and Evan out in the garden, and someone told us years later the name of the excavator, which there's an excavator in my backyard right now, is uh Yanmar, and then Evan says, No, it's a Kubota. And then, like, 20 years later, someone's like, So what is it? Is it a Yanmar Kubota? I don't know, but there's an excavator sitting there. Yeah, that's the main point. Exactly. And that means we were both there. So uh cool, cool. That's so mighty men on my list, k cow. That is going to be the disciples. Yes, yes. Total random thing. You're speaking of being spontaneous before this episode. This is spontaneous, totally random. Oh no. I have a fly racket that I bought from Dollarama, like an electric fly zapper.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And every time I kill a fly outside, it goes and I go kchow really loud. All the kids love it.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, like me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like me, queen. Okay. Well, you know what time it is. It is Davakim time. Davakin! Okay.

SPEAKER_02

You have a Davakim.

SPEAKER_00

I do. And it's not from me myself and I, rather, it's from one of our listeners who posted on Facebook. Shout out to Charlotte. Thank you for sending this along.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

It's gonna be an interesting one. This is a heavy one. I've heard this one before. Yep. So here we go. Ready? Yep. Davakin question: What is the difference between being religious and being spirit-filled?

SPEAKER_02

That's tricky. Because the way it's worded implies that you can't have one without the other. Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Whether or not it's meant that way. I don't know. We don't know, but that's okay. Um, so we're just gonna answer it directly to the way that it's written. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

I'll let you give your thoughts first, because there's a scripture I want to pull up.

SPEAKER_00

Sure. Okay. We're actually gonna tag team. We're gonna be like WWE wrestlers here or WWF. Um, and speaking of which, I met a wrestler once. Uh the million dollar man. Oh, right. Ted D.B. Really cool. Anyway, he's a born-again believer, in case you guys don't know. Anyway, um, so this scripture, or uh sorry, I have a scripture based on how to answer this. And here it is, ready, James 1 27. I don't know if you were going that direction, J.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's the one I was I think that was the one I was trying to Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm gonna throw it out there for us, okay? Oh, wait, no, it's not, never mind. Okay, go for it. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this to look after orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. That's James 127. But if I back up a little bit, that's the one I was looking for.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, go ahead.

SPEAKER_00

You want to read it?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. Verse 26. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Interesting.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So we have religion here, not in the negative sense.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. And so looking back at the question, what's the di the difference between being religious and spirit-filled? What's your take? Um, we're just gonna piggyback off and on.

SPEAKER_02

Just my own thoughts on it. Mm-hmm. Not really backed up by scripture right yet, because I can't think of anything else. That's okay. I feel like a lot of people see religion in a bad light. And I feel like spirit-filled can be a fairly abstract way of putting it. Okay. Cause you can kind of measure religion based on scriptures and stuff like that. Mm-hmm. Spirit-filled, of course, as well, because you can see, like, of course, the accounts of the gospels and the New Testament and stuff like that, where people were moved by the Spirit to do certain things, so we can get a good a good glimpse as to who the Holy Spirit is that way. Yep. But uh I feel like you can have one without the other. Not that how do I put it? Both I think have their purposes. Yep. And they shouldn't be separated from one another.

SPEAKER_00

Indeed. Okay. Interesting. Cause that actually lines up a bit with so this is from Gott questions. I find they're pretty good. Okay. Uh, it's a Christian site. So religion, the word, okay, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is the belief in and worship of a god or gods or any such system of belief and worship. The Bible refers to religion in several places. Um and you know, we have like Paul saying that he follows strict sect of our religion, right? In Judaism, uh Festus actually calls Judaism a religion in Acts 25. Um, but the I think the bottom line from my take on this is that reading it in this sense, I think so. It can also define dedicated faith. So I think in this the positive sense, okay, of the word religion, it's okay if you say you're religious, that means you're dedicated to your faith. Yeah. Right? It's not meant to in our society, it's often it can be be used as well in a negative context, like, oh, you're religious, meaning that you're more focused on tradition, and you know, don't touch this, don't eat that, don't go here, don't go there, don't say that. Uh a lot of, if you will, going back to like the law in the Bible, right? Um only difference is that, you know, even now, especially for certain denominations, like they there's just man-made stuff thrown in there too. That's not really that different than the Pharisees, right? For like, you know, religion. Um, but I I think that being spirit-filled too, I think you can be religious in the sense of devoted to your walk with God while also being spirit-filled, having the Holy Spirit within you.

SPEAKER_02

For sure. Because I mean, why else would we have a whole book pretty much about how to conduct church and how we should present ourselves and how we should behave and things like that if it didn't matter?

SPEAKER_00

Correct. And so there's something right here, and I think this is a a nice little ending for this, is what they say. They give a little great summary here. Oh, yeah. The word religion is used in many contexts, but there's a difference between false religion and true, right? We know that to be right, false religious practices or true religious practices. However, here's the key part. Similarly, there is a difference between religion to look religious, yeah, and religion to cultivate a deeper relationship with Christ. And I think that that's because I remember years ago I'd have people like, Oh, are you religious? And I'd be like, No, no, I'm not religious. No, no, I'm a follower of Jesus. Yeah, that's one of the things I used to say as well. But now, if someone says that to me now, I know where I am in my faith with Christ. I'm not gonna say, Oh no, no, I'm not religious. I don't associate with religion. I wouldn't say that. I would say, Yeah, sure. I believe then I would tag on it and I'll be like, you know, I believe in Jesus and He's my Lord and Savior. Yeah. Right? Yeah. Right out. So, first off, thank you, Charlotte, for sending that in. Of course. Well, I should say last, because actually, this is at the end of the conversation now. Last off? No. It sounds like blast off. I've had too much coffee. Yeah. You're about to blast off. Cut out.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Um you gotta do the thing.

SPEAKER_00

I do, I do. I have to do the thing. Here is the moment that probably 20 of you have been waiting for. Um, this is the giveaway. Woo! So just gonna explain how it's going to work. Um, Evan, I don't think I even told you this, but for the listener, when you go ahead and you hear these two words said now tango tango. Oh, okay. Tango tango. You need to put that in to a message.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and uh in under Facebook message, you can also go under Um Spotify or Apple. You can message us on Buzz Sprout. Whichever. Whichever you choose. Make sure your name is there. Just your name. And Tango Tango. That is the Easter egg drop. Indeed. That lets us know that you've listened to this podcast. And how it's going to work is that if you are in the region of Newfoundland and Labrador, you'd have to be. Yeah, you'd have to be because otherwise you can't use this gift certificate because there's only one location. So where is that location? It is Massage on the Rock, located in CBS. I have a gift certificate here, sponsored or we're sponsored by Massage on the Rock. Yeah. It's valued at $126.50. And it's a coupon to be able to go and use it and you get a free massage.

SPEAKER_02

There you go.

SPEAKER_00

And so this is up for grabs. Write tango tango in the comments. Put your name there. And then what we'll do is that once this episode's release, and about a week after, make sure we give everyone time to put it in. We're going to do a random spin the wheel with all the names in it. And one uh fortunate winner uh will get picked. Indeed. And we will not be in the wheel, just so that we're clear. Yeah. This is for you guys. We have it already. Correct. Uh, and thank you uh to Massage on the Rock. Again, they're a great massage uh place here in Conception Bay, South Newfoundland. So Tango Tango.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

I just came up with that. That was pretty can't say it no more. Yeah, because yeah, yep. Okay. All right. Uh we're moving on. Indeed. Now, Evan, the ball is in your court, my friend. Right. Okay. Here we go. Mighty men.

SPEAKER_02

The last part of this episode. So, Christian, you were talking about the twelve disciples and the four gospels. Yep. I'm going to talk about Paul or Saul, I guess, as he's known right now. Or reverse. Yeah. Or Saul. Well known as Paul. When I'm talking about him, he's going to be Saul. Okay. But Saul and Paul. Well, right now, that's what it is. Don't argue with me. Voice is Saul Saul.

SPEAKER_00

Don't hit me. I'll definitely need a massage.

SPEAKER_02

Right? But um, if you don't know, Paul, Saul, same guy, uh, he wrote most of the New Testament. Correct. Which is crazy because there's a lot of books in the New Testament. However, I'm gonna be looking at Acts chapter 9, and I'm gonna be reading from 20 to 22. So a little bit into Paul's background, he was big into persecuting Christians. He separated people from their families, he delivered them to be sometimes murdered, you know, just really terrible things got to do with the church. He reveled in it, basically. Tearing people away from from the faith, right? What'd you say it was? Acts what? Acts chapter nine, verses twenty to twenty-two. Okay. So a little bit earlier from where I'm about to read, he got um converted uh on the road to Damascus. Yeah. But a little while before that, he was in Damascus previously for persecuting those Christians like I was talking about earlier. Gotcha. So it's at this point after he got um converted, yes, I guess we'll say that um he goes, Well, I'll just read it.

SPEAKER_00

You know what? And and as you get ready to read, just a little quick note, and I liked how you did that. One of the key things that can eliminate a lot of um controversy with within the Bible for people like quoting things is going back and reading the context, read like you just did, you just talked about the context of it. Context clearly. So that's one of the the key parts, because like how many times have you heard people quote like oh the Bible says this, and they'll take one scripture and then they'll leave out like the six verses before it which explains why that verse is totally relevant. Yeah. Right? So anyway, I just want to commend you for that. Just a little Thank you. Yeah, all right, go ahead.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. So this is uh Acts 9, 20 to 22. Okay. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus, and immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, He is the Son of God. Wow. And all who heard him were amazed and said, Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem of those who called upon his name? And has he not come here for this purpose to bring them bound before the chief priests? But Saul increased all the more in strength and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ. So imagine the cojones you'd have to have to go back to a place where you were previously wreaking havoc in this place, tearing people away from faith to then go back and preach the same faith that you were tearing people up for.

SPEAKER_00

It's no wonder they were suspicious of him. You would be. Exactly, you would. Like you're like, oh, he's probably just pretending to be a Christian.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

To get in our circle.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. But no, he was. Wow. Which is you gotta commend Paul. Because one of the things that was trickiest for me after coming to the faith was realizing how much crap is in your life that you gotta get rid of. Mm-hmm and how much you actually have to confront. Because that's one of the things I think a lot of people have a preconceived notion about Christianity is that um all accountability is gone, which is not true. Explain what do you mean? I mean um I've heard it said before that um people only like Christianity or people only call themselves Christians so they can avoid countability and just be forgiven and go off and do whatever. Interesting. Which uh obviously was not the case, because if that was the case, Paul would have just kept doing what he was doing. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

He wouldn't have felt any conviction to go back to that. And one of the things too, back to almost the Davakim earlier, is that you know, if you are practicing your faith, you are following the Lord, you are spirit-filled, meaning you've you've received uh, you know, you've received Christ as your savior, right? The Holy Spirit comes in you, that's scriptural, okay. Um, and uh, you know, and then you've received something else called the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which is almost like an overflowing of the spirit, okay, in you. Um you're always going to be changing. Yeah I've been following the Lord for over 20 something years, 25 years, and yeah, 20 or definitely over 25 years. And one of the things, Evan, I'm still changing, man. I'm still I still have crap in my life that just comes along in your life anyway, that you have to give to God, ask him to help you with it, and and work it out. Yeah, you know what I mean? There's always gonna be something, and and and I think that this there's a false notion that you know Christians think that they're perfect, maybe some do, but it's you're not perfect at all. Now, the blood of Christ covers your sins, and the Holy Spirit can help you wrestle through those things and give you victory in them, but that does not mean for a moment, like I don't think I'm any better than you or the person that doesn't know Christ. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

There's um there's a verse somewhere, I think it's in Luke, of um Jesus was saying a parable about uh was it the Pharisee and the Samaritan or something like that? Where the Pharisee goes down to I think his kneel at the temple or something like that, and he says, Lord, thank you that I'm not like this guy. Yes, thank you that I fast twice a day and not like you know, yeah, I wash my hands, I do this, I do that. And the Samaritan fellow is like, Lord, I can't do anything for you. It actually says he beats his chest. Yeah. Right? Right? Yeah, yeah. We should have no grounds for boasting based on what we do.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, and that's scriptural, it let us only ever boast in Christ, right? In God.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Cool. I love it. I love that you picked Paul. I think that's interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah, I can definitely say that. So we got uh we have Paul, as you just talked about, and then before that we had the disciples. Yes, yes. And to sum up this series, the whole point of it is that mighty men are men that devote themselves to Christ to bring glory to God, um, and to essentially uh live their lives in such a way that their legacy is remembered, not in the sense that they are living to have a legacy, but they are living for God, which gives them that legacy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And I mean, I'm sure there's many people that have lived to grow God's legacy that we'll probably never know the names of. Right on. And that's yeah that's the goal, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that's the thing. Like, we're not doing it for attention, and if you're doing it for attention, that's the wrong reason why you're doing it. Yeah, right? Heart check. Um, so we hope that you have enjoyed this episode and this series, actually. I I know that we've learned uh a lot from this series, and um, and you know, one of the things that we just want to say is, you know, thank you to our dedicated listeners. If this is your first time ever listening to the episode, go back and listen to our other ones. Yes, yes. Uh, they're good. And um we look forward to dropping our next episode uh with you guys. And uh yeah, so remember, you know the code word.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we're not saying it again. No more because people are gonna skip to the end.

SPEAKER_00

We know, we know. Uh so yeah, uh enjoy the episode, plug in your name and the um in in in the special egg, the Easter egg word, and then uh you'll be entered into a draw, and we'll announce the winners on our Facebook page, and then we will hook you up with the massage on the rock gift certificate. All right. Thank you for listening. Copeless.
