Everyone around here has been to the fairgrounds. Here’s some stories about times we’ve had at the Kitsap Fairgrounds.
Welcome back, Muchachos, to another wonderful episode of B Town Stories with Schnazzle and Jerry. I'm Schnazzle. Hi, I'm Jerry. Uh, if you didn't know, Jerry Lagar is a Canadian flautist and uh just an all-around great guy. What's going on, Jerry? How you doing, brother?
SPEAKER_01Well, pretty good. Just having one of those days. Low, low energy, low energy. And something really weird happened earlier. I drink a lot of water throughout the day, and I go into the employee bathroom at work, and everyone uses. Well, there's two of them, and they're gender neutral. Okay. Is that the correct PC terminology? Definitely. Okay, so boys and girls can go in them. And I was so there's only two of them. So there's a lot of employees, so they a line develops sometimes because you know they're occupied. And I was just waiting. Finally, this one kid comes out, and every time I walk by this guy, it's the worst fucking BO I've ever fucking smelt on someone. And I just want to go, dude, it's not that hard to not smell like fucking shit.
SPEAKER_04Hey, go down aisle six and get some old spice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's really not that hard. And I never say anything because he's always like really nice to me. So he's coming out and he holds the door for me because he can tell that I'm clearly, you know, needing to use the restroom. And uh, I was like, oh no. Just based on how his body smells all the time, I'm assuming that his shit is gonna be like even 10 times worse than his B.O. you know. And uh I go in there and it smells like fucking cologne. No poo smell. I was so shocked.
SPEAKER_04That's what's called irony.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, yeah, and so I I just go over to piss on the toilet, and oh boy, did he leave a mess? I mean, he clearly flushed the toilet, but it just left like fucking skid marks all over the whole fucking bowl. I was like, don't you see that? And like flush multiple times to see if the the pressure of the incoming water like cleans it off for the next person, you know.
SPEAKER_04I mean, this is this is a lot of introspection going on with you, Josh, you know, like but it is very interesting that somebody who has severe like bo would take you know a very good smelling uh number two.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was shocked, plus I was shocked and pleasantly surprised, but then the toilet bowl, and I was like, I didn't want to pee in the toilet bowl because I just didn't want my urine to touch his poo because like you don't want to cross the streams, I don't want to cross because that's basically like it just felt like too personal, you know. Like I we don't need anything coming out of my front area into your back area.
SPEAKER_04Well, Josh, you you know that I love you, man, and you can always tell me anything. Okay, I'm here for you. So like not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm glad you're sharing these things with me and uh and our audience.
SPEAKER_01So I just I'm uncomfortable. So I flushed the toilet 13 times, holding in my piss until all of his feces was removed from the the bull. Damn, bruh. Yeah, uh, so I was in there a while, but okay.
SPEAKER_04Well, I think that's a good uh segue into today's topic. Oh, let's talk about the fair now. Well, I was gonna transition into like the porta potties at the fair. Yeah, there you go. The honey bucket, yeah, like you know, some type of transition like that, but the cat's out of the bag and the urine's out of the dong. And the shit's out of the shitter, yeah. But um, yeah, so I think it'll be fun to talk about uh just the fair in general, man. You know, well, the fair grounds in general, the fair and the fair grounds, and what a magical place it is for all those who come up in the B town, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like everyone has like some experience at the fairgrounds, like definitely whether it's the fair or concerts that happen there or fucking doing community service and fucking shoveling horse shit, you know.
SPEAKER_04Speaking of shit, uh see that we dude, we blew like four transitions right there. Um, but yeah, no, I mean, you know, you're coming up in B Town, and uh every you know, when it starts to get summer, here comes the fair. And I had a lot of really great at let's just talk about the fair first. Yeah, yeah. The Cap County Fair. Like, did you ever go on a date with a chick at the fair? Like, I went on a date with a chick at the fair and had my first kind of like date kiss at the fair.
SPEAKER_01See, you you're a much more experienced guy with gals than I am really have. I mean, uh in the teen years earlier in life, I just really I was sitting at home watching fucking Nick at Night and Amazing Discoveries while all my peers or whatnot was you know hanging out with chicks, you know. I was like just they scared me, you know. Actually, it's funny. Um, like not too long ago at work, speaking of me not like you know being comfortable around girls and talking to girls when I was younger, I was like, what if I'm gay? And I was like, so I'd think that. And then I was like, but I don't like you know think about dudes like that, you know. So I'm probably not, but the the thought definitely crossed my mind, you know. And a couple weeks ago at work, I'm just standing in the meet room, the meat room with all the boys, it's where I like to be. News flash, you're gay. And I was like, it's me and four other dudes, and I go, Hey, did you guys ever like think you were gay when you were younger at any point? That went, no, no, no, no. And I was like, Oh, yeah, yeah, me neither. I was just like wondering if uh you did it.
SPEAKER_04It was pretty fucking funny every time it comes up, it comes up, and uh everyone in many ways I think it would be much easier to be gay, so you wouldn't like you have to suffer through the humiliation of trying to date chicks, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because it's like all pretty like well, not anymore, really, but back then it was kind of you know on the down low, and if you were you know a gay with another gay, then you two were just kind of like doing your own little thing, and there was no pressure because you were both in the same like position, you know. Yeah, and plus like if you're dating a guy that has like a similar body type as you, you you got another wardrobe.
SPEAKER_04Did you know that there's double your wardrobe? Did you know that there's a whole gay code like vernacular like that typifies different types of dudes?
SPEAKER_03I know about bears. There's like bears and there's like otters. Otters. I don't what's an otter? There's there's a chinchilla. I didn't know that. There's a monci. Did not know that. There's a smurfette. Is I'm just joking. Now I'm just making these up. I knew there's a monchi. I know.
SPEAKER_01No, uh, the bears and the otters, I've heard of those, but those are the real ones, and yeah.
SPEAKER_04No, anyways, um but yeah, the fair. So uh did you have any good time? Like, I mean, what I had some fond memories of the fair. The fair always had like those fucked up rides, like the zipper. Do you remember the zipper?
SPEAKER_01One time I tried the zipper, but no, I the my earliest fair memory, I would have to say, was probably the summer of like 84, 85. Like, I'm like nine.
SPEAKER_04So you were still at one at the age when like this fair is magical.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like it was super cool. And like at this point, my mom sorry, my mom had gone back to work, and so we had a babysitter in the summer that just hung out with us all day when my parents were at work, Win Teen Nockbick, but we called her Bicky, she's Vietnamese, yeah. Um, and she would cruise us all over the place. I think I mentioned this before, but so that was the the big thing was the fair was coming up, and she's gonna cruise us to the fair.
SPEAKER_04Real quick though, was this the same babysitter from the last time when oh no, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01This chick had morals. Um, she was really fucking cool and uh very, very pretty. Okay. Um, very just she, but she seemed like like an older cool sister, you know what I mean? Totally. And uh anyway, she cruised us up there because this band that she knew from Hawaii called oh crap, what were they called?
SPEAKER_04Um is it like those big dudes who play the ukulele's and like sing the no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01They were just like regular, they were basically like the Hawaiian version of DeBarge. Do you remember that band DeBarge? Like, feel the beat of the rhythm of the night, dancing to the barge. Yeah, I know that song. Okay, that's debarge, and it's this whole family of brothers and sisters, and they had a bunch, they got a few hit songs, true. Anyway, El Dabarge, who was the lead singer, he went on and did a solo creep. But anyway, this band was like the Hawaiian version of De Barge, they were all these brothers and sisters, and somehow Bicky knew them, and we were gonna go there and see them perform and go backstage. Wow, and like at that point, like all I anyone that was in a band I thought was famous, you know. Like, no, totally, yeah, yeah. If you're playing at the Kidsap County Fair, you're equivalent to Brian Adams and Bruce Springsteen in my eyes. Yeah, and so we were like, I didn't know anything about these guys, but like I was starstruck. I was I don't know, starstruck is the right word, but I was in awe. Let's just say I was in awe of them, and they sounded like a band you would hear on the radio, they were like that good, you know. Yeah, and uh so we hung out with them, and fucking that same fair was actually the same one where I got one of those cool feathers that you clip on your hat that's actually a fucking roach clip. Oh, yeah, dude. I just thought they were like this cool thing you get and fucking hang it on your whatever.
SPEAKER_04You know, I got one of those too, not knowing it was a roach clip.
SPEAKER_01I didn't know it was a roach clip till a really long time later, like adult years, and uh it wasn't until another time where I got you know, how I had all dude.
SPEAKER_04You were just like 10 years old with like 15 roach clips. Yeah, yeah. One of those expo 86 hats with those two long fucking things that went down the back, you know, those two like landing strip things.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh yeah, so I had a bunch of fucking feathers on my hat.
SPEAKER_04Dude, what was your favorite fair food? So Crazy Eric's burgers was like the fucking king of the of the fair.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was good shit, but like I literally lived two blocks from Crazy Eric's, so like we went there all the fucking time. So it wasn't that wasn't the big, like, you know, a big treat for the at the fair.
SPEAKER_04The elephant ear, which was just like sugar 40,000 calories of like deep fried dough with like sugar sugar.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, I don't remember like mouting too many elephant ears back in the day, but yeah, I don't really a cotton candy, I could say I was big on the tons of cotton candy. Like the cotton candy at the fair. That's probably what I look forward to the most. But uh yeah, that first time at the fair with Bicky was really that's I know I went there other times with my parents, but like that one just really stuck out. God, I can't remember the name of that band, and it's really gonna bother me. So you talk about something for a minute, okay? Your first experience at the fair, and I will remember the name of the band.
SPEAKER_04I just had a good time going around, playing those games, losing a lot of money. Uh, I think me and my buddy Robbie used to ride that pirate ship one that went like up and back, you know. Robbie Hume? Yeah, I think so. But you know what I'm talking about? It's like yeah, yeah, that's I liked that one, but it was cool because like at the very top you could like hawk a loogie, and like it would just go super fucking high. Uh but then what was the zipper? There and then okay, there was the Gravitron that was like okay, that one I did too.
SPEAKER_01You go and lay on the wall and it like spins around and makes you like descend the wall, and you could I don't know if the if it's uh inertia is the word I'm looking for.
SPEAKER_03It's like g forces, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh, yeah. That that one I really liked. I did not like the zipper. There's too much flipping around and nause nauseous feelings for me on that one, but the pirate ship one, yeah, that was cool. Like that was like one my what was that one called?
SPEAKER_04Um it didn't have a pirate ship name, it was like the Zoltron or some shit, but it was a pirate ship, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't remember actually. I think you were thinking of that uh that um fucking genie in the movie Big with Tom Hanks.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, god, I was thinking Josh, you're fucking sharp as attack, dude. Your brain is a razor, yes, a razor. Um, but you know, I but so the the kids at County Fair proper, you know, much smaller than other fairs in the state, like Puallop and uh fair and all that stuff. But you know, you got used to going to the fairgrounds as a kid, and then came the music events there that we were like right smack dab in the middle of a magical fucking time. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like there's so many shows that I heard about that happened there before, even before like the Lollapalooza was like the one that kind of kicked it off. I was like, oh, that's the first big show there.
SPEAKER_04I think was that the one that L7 was at?
SPEAKER_01I don't think L7 was on that.
SPEAKER_04That was my first proper big concert. I think that was an end fest.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so that must have been an end fest, but also I can't see the end playing L7 at the same time, but we'll have to look it up. It could have been a separate show, but Lollapalooza, I was pretty sure it was Pearl Jam, Ministry, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Sound Guard Jane's Addiction.
SPEAKER_04Because Jane's Addiction created Lollapalooza. I saw that doc recently, yeah, yeah, but they weren't on that one.
SPEAKER_01Got it, got it. Um, and then uh ice tea or cube. Oh, body count? No, it was just iced tea, like actually just rap doing his rap show. But uh, yeah, I was really stoked about that, and then I just didn't go. But I was at my house, which is like across the street, so I heard the whole fucking thing. Sweet, yeah. I was like, why the fuck didn't I go that? But then uh when I met Johnny Hawkins, he went to see Alice and Chains right when Facelift came out sick inside the pavilion. Wow, you saw Alice and Chains inside the pavilion, yeah, in nine in 1990, which was a year and a half or so before the Lollapalooza, and that bums me out. Like every time I put on facelift, which was yesterday, that I that's the first thing I think of is that Alice and Chains in their fucking prime played across the street from my house and I didn't fucking know or go to it, and that really bums me out, dude.
SPEAKER_04There was so much acid going around back in the day there. Like everybody had just sheets of acid. Okay, let me ask you this Did you ever jump the fence to get into any event there?
SPEAKER_01No, it's too fat to jump fences. So well, did you ever also a huge pussy?
SPEAKER_04I did, and it was amazing. It's just like you run in, and then there's like a like this poor, beleaguered, underpaid like security guard who's like tasked with just trying to catch these fucking kids that are just rushing at you like Marchon trying to, you know. But uh there was so you could get in like on the top, you know, on uh what's the road Olympic high school's ones Nelson. Nels Nelson. Along if you take a right and go down there, there's like that was a popular fence to jump. But also, if you go down Nels Nelson to the right to where the fence was coming behind the stage, like yeah, before the name the houses, the developments, yeah. Yeah, you could go down you could go through those woods, and like sometimes people would like pull up the the like a hole in the fence in the bottom, and you could just get in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I knew all about that shit. I was just like, I don't know, I was just like really apprehensive about doing stuff like that for some reason, and I just like wussed out.
SPEAKER_04Did you ever pull scams? Like, I think I was talking before, like I would make up some fake bags of weed and sell them to people for like 40 bucks and just dip into the crowd, you know.
SPEAKER_01No, I was just like really going there to just rock out. Like, I went to a couple end fests, which were definitely you know, life-changing events, dude, totally, and uh like where is it?
SPEAKER_04Like the only thing that's equivalent to that is like fucking uh what's the big festival now?
SPEAKER_01Like stuff at the gorge, and like yeah, anything that was basically happening at the Kits At Bowl is what it's called, yeah. Yeah, move to the gorge. So anything that uh would have come, that's where they do it now. But yeah, uh yeah, it was like really weird. Like all of a sudden, every big band in fucking the world is just playing behind my house. Like I tell people that and they're like, no. I'm like, I'm fucking serious. Radiohead, fucking radio head. Everybody delivery BOC Radiohead and uh fuck yeah, corn. I remember this one time after uh the one end fest, it was corn and deft tones, and mxpx was on the lineup. And me and Jeremy Fairbanks were like, let's go down to the fucking the Silverdale Hotel where all the bands are staying after the show and sneak in to the after party, you know. Yeah, so like we just came up with this fucking bullshit lie to the security that we were this band from Scotland that like played on the show and like Jeremy's talking in his best Scottish accent, which is pretty fucking good. Really? Yeah, and they let us in, and there's fucking like the singer of Butterface hanging out with fucking corn and orgy and fucking were you guys like hill, we're the supple dongs from Scotland. We're the supple dongs. Uh we're pretty drunk already, so like I don't really rem remember a lot that happened that night, but that's how we got in. I don't remember. I remember we went and talked to uh the crowd that was kind of around the MXPX guys, and I don't know. I don't that's kind of a blur, but it was fun sneaking in.
SPEAKER_04Dude, the BC Boys concert was rad.
SPEAKER_01Excuse me. Did you go to that with my brother?
SPEAKER_04I think so, but like I I got I think I got lost, and then there was these dudes behind a truck across the street in the parking lot on the other side of the pavilion. Uh that they had this big tank, and I was like, What is that? And he was just filming these balloons, and it was uh nitrous. Oh, so these dudes were slanging like five dollar balloons of nitrous, and I was like, That's a good fucking deal, dude. And I like I got hooked on nitrous, like dude. I I took I I did nitrous and it was just like, holy shit, this is amazing! Uh and so like I spent all my money on these nitrous balloons and like just like trying to bum money for more nitrous is fucking ridiculous. I just turned into like a nitrous crackhead, it's fucking awful, but that stuff was super fun.
SPEAKER_01Don't do it though. Uh yeah, it is fucking fun. Like my buddy, uh, we'll just call him J Boy. Oh, when I was like 20, he worked at FPH and fucking he worked the night shift, and he would fucking take the fucking nitrous tank that they use to make their whipped cream. He would literally take it home and he'd be like, dude, come over and pick up a bag of balloons on the way. So I'd go fucking grab some balloons at handy and's and meet him over at his house, and we'd just sit there for hours. It's so bad for you. But uh, I loved it. It was uh, you know, I like you know getting high, man. Who doesn't like getting high?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, but uh it's it's much better from the big tank than it is like whip it, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. It lasts way longer.
SPEAKER_04But uh I wonder what our boy Kevin Jones has to say about the fair. I bet he has some smart guy showing.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, Kev Pro's here.
SPEAKER_04Kevin L. Jones, welcome to him here to the podcast.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, that was so fun. Oh my god, thank you for the discussion about uh clearing out the toilet job. Oh, yeah. There's more where that came from. I would like to point out too, I have had an official gay man tell me I'm an otter, so I'm really good. That's how I'm designated, you know, an unfair territory. Tori.
SPEAKER_01What's the definition?
SPEAKER_00You're not that fat. And if you're any skinnier, that's when you become a puppy, which I think, you know. A puppy? A puppy, yeah. They have puppy piles, you know. Do you put that into your mind? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Big big orgy.
SPEAKER_04I've been called a mere cat.
SPEAKER_00See that?
SPEAKER_04Just because like when guys are in the stall right next to me, like making out I pop my head up and go boop.
SPEAKER_00But I just I felt so good. I was like, I'm I'm I was worried I was bear territory, but being an otter, I will take it, you know? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I just realized as I'm looking in this video monitor that I have a bear tattooed on my hand, and I that means a very guy.
SPEAKER_00That's how you eat ass, right? Is that blood coming out?
SPEAKER_03Is all the ass crossed the line? Whatever. All right, should we get into history?
SPEAKER_04He's a legit journalist, and so he can raise the or lower the bar or whatever however he wants to go, and we have to follow him.
SPEAKER_00We should definitely talk about the Kitsap County Fair. It was first being held at Port Orchard. By the way, interesting. Yeah, you guys should all know, too, you know, Bremerton history. I mean, we gotta get into uh William Bremer. Basically, we would not have Seattle without a German who was just like, I fun to make money, you know. And he bought up a he heard that um a Navy base was coming, and so he bought up all this land, and that's why we have Bremerton. It's named after this rich German dude. Um, but basically, yeah, they it was you know, it was all about the Kidsap County Fair, and the first uh the first event really going was the uh the Kidsap Stampede. Oh, okay. Yeah, I mean, do you guys ever go to that? You guys like rodeos? Uh no, I like rodeo music. Oh, yeah. I saw you singing Luke Combs. By the way, I mean we should get in some Luke Comb uh karaoke later. Come on, guy. Come on now. But honestly, but yeah, I don't know. I used to cover rodeos and they always bum me out because for one, they're really long, like they take forever between the like actual races and stuff, too. And then it's just you know, it's just sad. Like, no one is that excited to see a dude unless he gets thrown off and possibly hurt, you know. I would say the cutest thing is the uh was it the mutton busters? Have you seen that where they just tie a little kid to a sheep and let it go? Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04That sounds very Bremerton.
SPEAKER_01I think I do remember seeing that now that you like describe it. That's definitely something I've seen before.
SPEAKER_04You know what else is very Bremerton from the from the fairgrounds? Dude, there was this clip that was like a national news of like some monster truck show there. Oh, yeah, the the wheel came. Yeah, this wheel like went off and like just like jumped over the fence and like smashed some fucking Hyundai. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And everybody's like, fucking hey, yeah, yeah. Bigfoot, dude. Bigfoot was like a national treasure that, like, truly I felt some Washingtonian pride behind, you know.
SPEAKER_04You know Bigfoot was from Washington?
SPEAKER_00I don't know, but I mean Bigfoot itself, you know, that's all like, yeah, especially the 1970s like the the monster, not the truck. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, I tell I had friends that went monster trucks, but yes, yeah, you know, uh, I did come until the actual fairgrounds were set up in the 70s, and then in the 90s, it was just like a glut of awesome shows, dude. So many.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but like uh I will say though that um do well, do you before you left Bremerton, did you go do the little fair or anything like that? Do you have any memories there?
SPEAKER_00I never did the fair, but here's the thing that I was over in that area because behind it was a big campground. Oh and that's where the Boy Scouts in the area would rent out and have a lot of Jamborees and stuff like that. There's also a farm, actually, kind of more behind Fairview. Like uh, if you went Nels Nelson the other way towards what is it, the 303, 308, like Wagaway. Yeah, yeah. If you went that way, there's a big kind of feel that was later Jamborees, but the one behind the camp, uh the uh fairgrounds was like where the all the Boy Scout and Cub Scout day camps were. Yeah, yeah. I spent every summer there because my dad was a troop leader, so I was there all the time, you know. Lots actually really great memories there, you know. Cool.
SPEAKER_01I I did that, I went to that too. And did you do a thing where you like fucking uh built a I guess like a shatterproof encasing for an egg, and like the fire department came and fucking like dropped it off the top of their ladder?
SPEAKER_00No, but I do remember those kind of science experiments, but here's the thing that I remember. It was truly like it was like, yes, this is why you live in a military town right here. My dad talked to the uh to the my dad was you know, lieutenant commander in the navy. He talked to somebody who was in like explosions, like into the like the munitions, and he was just like, you know, can you come and show off what you do? And they literally just brought a bunch of explosion uh explosives and set them off at our day camp. Oh nice, like yeah, yeah. It was like it was the greatest. Like at first, when my dad was telling me this, I was like, dude, we're gonna get mushroom clouds, like we're gonna blow shit up. It was not like that, it was way more like big firecrackers, but it was still like a guy like, all right, well, if you see a mine, which I doubt you will ever see, but if you see a mine like this, do not touch it, you know. And it was also like he would use it was an old school kind of igniter where you like go wee wee weo woo woo and it would send a lot of power and then just shit would just blow up, you know. That was you know, that was why you go like you live in a navy town because you're so close to like explosions and stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they'll just think it's from the base or something.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but uh well, Josh, let me ask you what one thing. So, in your promoting years, did you ever promote any shows at the fairgrounds?
SPEAKER_01Or like I did one really at the President's Hall, which is up behind the pavilion. Yeah, it's the second largest building there. Um, there's a couple shows back in high school, like the Rock and Hawkins. Oh, yeah, they did there. I God, who played that? Uh somebody kind of big, and then uh Dead Clerics, which was Slaughter and Johnny and Dale. Um, and who else is that?
SPEAKER_04The Dead Clerics were rad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and uh anyway, so I did a show in the President's Hall in 2005, I believe. It was uh a Kane Hotter album release show, sick, and it was the lineup was insane. Like at the time, it was Kane Hotter, Time to Fly, Quick to Blame, Claymore, and the Jet City Fix, which was a Tacoma band that was well, I put them on the show as a favor because um they don't have a big draw here, but uh they they they did okay in Seattle, but anyway, there's I think 600 paid at the door. Holy fuck, so it was pretty fucking huge, and I got Gordon Sound to do sound, it sounded great, but I was like stressing out the whole day. It was like summer.
SPEAKER_04Well, dude, that sounds like a much better show than the like the last show I went there was like it was uh Steppenwolf, right? Oh yeah, like but like for some reason, like the lead singer of Steppenwolf, I guess his name is John K. Yeah, I feel like his girlfriend was like, Your name's not big enough on the venue. So, like the band was billed as John K in like 24 point font, and then in tiny font and steppenwolf, yeah, and dude, and like do you remember like uh Gabe's mom's boyfriend, shooter Bill? Oh, yeah, he was like a bandito or whatever.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, he was ombre, which is like the sober banditos.
SPEAKER_04So there was like a biker event, and we were helping them sell tickets, and they didn't get as much as many people as you got at fucking at that show you were just talking about. But oh really, I I mean there was a bunch of bikers and stuff, and it was outdoors, but like they were like, We're gonna play a song off a new album, and it was just like there was two keyboardists and like 12 guitar. I mean, it was just awful for like a three-hour set, and then they went off uh off stage and made like the bikers like do their bikes for like just reving them concor for magic carpet ride, yeah. And I'm like, cool, bro. Yeah, we're all gonna die of poisoning and steppen wolf.
SPEAKER_01Um aren't they what what's the other song? Their biker song. Oh born to be wild, born to be wild. Yeah, heavy metal. There's there's heavy metal thunder. Yeah, yeah, that there's like I don't know if it's a people have said that that's the first time that's where the term heavy metal got applied to music was because of that lyric, not because of that song, but someone took that those words from that song to apply to a band.
SPEAKER_04Wow, interesting. I didn't know that's what I've heard. What made heavy metal is deserving of this uh uh big marquee name before Steppenwolf.
SPEAKER_01I'm pretty sure that dude lives in Belfare. John K? Like the dude, that's why they played here is because one of them, I don't know if it's him, but I think it's him, lives in Belfare.
SPEAKER_04I was just really surprised. Like, John K lives in Belfare? Holy shit!
SPEAKER_01Uh Steve Miller fucking lives out in Allen, has a house in Allen. Really? Steve, like Steve Miller band Steve Miller, like shops at QFC and Belfare. God damn, this is a great fucking B Town stories.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, oh my god, it'd be so great to nail down all the ex-rockers that are like hiding around here, man. So because then uh down here in NorCal, they're all in Marin, like you know, yeah. You go see like Rayman Zarek mowing his lawn in Nevado, you know, and that kind of thing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Nevado's big. I shot a lot of interviews from my slide dock up in Nevado.
SPEAKER_00That's right, that's right, that's right. But yeah, um, well uh what's good? Oh, yeah, heavy metal Mike, man, heavy metal Mike Saunders, singer of the Angry Samoans. He's the one that's credited for that. Um, but uh all right, so I wanted to talk to you about yeah, the Beastie Boys footage, which you get on YouTube from Kids At Pavilion, totally worth checking out. Honestly, it's around um uh check your head time. Oh, so good, so good, and they're talking shit about grunge too. I highly recommend it. Another fan that came on early uh through there, Tool.
SPEAKER_01That was a tool. I went to that show. Yes, it was Tool, uh Paw, uh Failure and the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, failure too?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, failure was rad. Uh and it was called Rockstock, brought to you by K-I-S-W. Wow, and I have a very specific like little memory from that. Well, me and Boy went, yeah, and we were drunk as fuck. Of course, and uh just hanging out. And I'm like, it's a little later in the day, and I think we started drinking at like 10 in the morning, so I'm like getting like worn out and like not hung over yet, but yeah, I just kind of want to not be there, you know. But I was still stoked to be there. And I look up in the sound booth, which is you know, always like right in the middle of the crowd, you know, and it's like a raised-up sound booth. And there's this guy up there with fucking a bandana around his face, uh, sunglasses on, and a hoodie. And for some reason, I just knew it was Lane Staley from Allison Chains. And I was like, I know that's him, dude. Like you could you could tell like from the musculature of his face or lack of yeah, I I mean it was just something I just knew it was him, and fucking so I was like telling Chris, I was like, look, it's fucking Lane Staley, and uh he's like, No, it's not. I was like, I bet you fucking whatever boy, and uh and uh so anyway, I'm just like watching the show. I didn't really care about paw or screaming cheetah willies too much, but I was just drunk anyway. Uh so I finally the dude gets up, and like these two security guards who looked like Samoan Kim Thyle from Soundgarden, yeah, long ass hair, green army jackets. They came to the bottom of the stairs when he came down the stairs, and they kind of just like escorted him around the side. And I wanted to like beeline, I'm I'm taller than most people, so I could see all this, you know. Yeah, so I kind of like made a beeline to the direction they were heading so I could get right in Lane Staley's face and like say, I'm a big fan or whatever, you know. And I got right in front of his face and I was like, Okay, that's definitely him. I'm looking like literally at the end. No, I just uh uh uh uh cat got my tongue, I didn't say anything, and it was like that guy in uh in Wayne's world that fucking just pushes Garth out of the way when they're at the fucking the club. Oh, yeah, get out of my way, Dweeb! That's basically what the fucking bodyguard guy did to me. Like, get out of the way, nerd. So anyway, they escorted him backstage and he came out and sang a couple songs with Tool. It was pretty fucking awesome. Sick. I guess that happened at one other show on that tour that I've heard about, but there's footage of that on YouTube as well. But uh that's awesome, man. That was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know. I remember hearing about that show, and like people would tell me, like, yeah, dude, the singer from Tool masturbated on stage. He did.
SPEAKER_01I was there, I saw it.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_00I was like, oh my god, or like someone else told me like he like got a blow chopper on the drummer. I'm like, what is what that's crazy?
SPEAKER_01Okay, that didn't that didn't happen. Yeah, maybe backstage.
SPEAKER_04So many wonderful, amazing things happening in Bremerton at the Kids Ed County Fairgrounds at the fair, and all the awesome music venues. I the when did those go away?
SPEAKER_01I've I think ninety eight. Well, like something happened, like they just well neighbors complained about the one or two days a year that they were inconvenienced slightly about with some punk kids in the neighborhood. So just people just kept complaining and being little bitches and fucking there, too.
SPEAKER_00We would skateboard there, they had those long curves that you can see. Yeah, yeah, we scattered awesome slides on, yeah. But yeah, that's where I saw my second punk show ever, SFN uh SNFU headlined with uh Nurse Diesel and uh Fight for Change. Yeah, yeah, Nurse Diesel was funny, you know. They were the grunge band with the flute player.
SPEAKER_01She would bust out the was this called a Rockin' Hawkins.
SPEAKER_00It might have been totally.
SPEAKER_01Comes.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, yes, totally the Canadian band. Yeah, totally. And that singer, when he started the show, he jumped off the the bass drum, like, and it looked like I mean he was higher than Michael Jordan ever could have gone. Like it was so insane, you know, and just kicked off the show. But then, yeah, I would go back to that stuff. It's a little too poppy for me, but like just you know, great punk rock, and then yeah, uh went away uh and then came back. And the last time I was there was an N Fest in '99, and it was actually Kid Rock was headlining when he still had the dwarf. Now, isn't that an alternative? Oh, Joe C the midget. I know there's that's the worst. I mean, one of the goofiest parts about fucking Kid Rock's career is you have like there was before, you know, before Josie, during Joe C and after Joe C, you know? So lame literally a dwarf in there, but yeah, what was so crazy? It was actually a really good lineup because I remember like you also had the the stuff going on the pavilion, so you had like a rave, so you had like Moby in the pavilion and stuff. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I was there. I was at the end.
SPEAKER_00Yes, okay, so yeah, Prime Price opened. Pennywise was playing outside, yes, yeah. Uh, who was the band that did the the like uh like space band that did a cover of Blue Monday? They played Orgy. Yes, yes, thank you. But here was the big issue was not only were you getting people jumping through, you know, the fences, which by the way, Chuck McAvoy, that's how he got into the first Lollapalooza, got to tell me all about like doing the run, you know. All I remember from Lollapalooza was like being a Boy Scout and picking up all the pea bottles that was left, you know, because cars were waiting so long to park. But, anyways, NFES, so great. But the thing was, it was back in the day when everyone was selling water and the tiny water bottles, and those things were getting chucked left and right. Fucking wild, dude. Yeah, dude, Primus at one time was like, Okay, you guys need to stop, we're not gonna play. You could throw up bags of weed, but not plastic bottles, and then before Kid Rock, Kid Rock wouldn't come on stage because there was people in the VIP, they would set up the like stands in the middle, you know, like you'd have the like that VIP area where they would put couches on basically like what would be like uh um, you know, like for uh uh shell scaffolding, scaffolding, thank you. They built scaffolding in the middle of the area, put couches on it, and those guys started chucking bottles up from the couch, and then I swear to god, it was like a sea of plastic just coming right back at them, and the people were like hiding behind the couches as just so many bottles came on, and Kid Rock would not come on until they stopped throwing bottles. It's too bad Kid Rock didn't die there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know. Oh my god, well, I'm interested in learning uh and hearing everybody's stories. You know, I hope this episode jarred some stories in your mind loose about the wonderful times at the fairgrounds.
SPEAKER_01You really jarred something loose, Tiger. But I think uh what is it about great sex that makes me up to crap?
SPEAKER_00You're not alone, buddy. You're not alone.
SPEAKER_04Oh, it wasn't that bad, Roy. Oh, stop it, you kingpin, greatest kind little anyways. Uh I think that's a good time to uh squeeze this episode off, gentlemen. Yeah, pinch it off. Um so yeah, thanks for joining us on another wonderful, nostalgic, Bremertonized episode of B Town Stories with Schnazzle and Jerry. I am Schnazzle. Yeah, I'm Jerry. And until next time, Mia Bee Ghost. Hey, take her easy.
