Who Let Us Adult?

Ian Unplugged: When Life Happens Unexpectedly

Ian & Jasmine Summers Season 1

This week’s episode looks a little different, Jaz is out with laryngitis, and life decided to pile on everything else for good measure. From a hit-and-run that totaled our car to sick kids and a one-car household, Ian’s taking the mic solo to process it all out loud.

Sometimes adulting feels like a test you didn’t study for, but somehow you still have to show up. In true Who Let Us Adult? fashion, this minisode is equal parts chaos, laughter, and a real life lesson woven in.

🎙️ When life be life-ing… sometimes all you can do is laugh and worry about your bubble 😉

Welcome to those that are watching on YouTube. Notice that it's just me. Welcome into the episode you didn't ask for, but never knew you needed me by myself. Now for those that are watching online and listening on. Wherever you find your podcast, uh, my lovely cohost, Jasmine, is not here. Um, that's because she has laryngitis um. And, and this week can, if it's week can be described as anything, it would be chaotic. Um, the best way to say it is God said, listen, the title of this week's episode of, uh, it's called Shuffle because everything has changed. Um, we have had quite a chaotic and wild. Week. All good, everyone's safe, all that good stuff. And, man, what happened this week? So let's start off with. Me. So, um, for those of you don't know, I work, um, all across, you know, the state of Ohio, just driving around town, going to different events. I live, I joke with people in, tell'em I live in coffee shops and bars and restaurants, meeting with people, networking. That's literally the, the, uh, the story of my, my, my work life. Wednesday was an interesting night. I had a chance to meet with, um, a partner of mine here in the, in the city, and they were hosting event where you got a chance to meet, you know, OSU legend, Mike Doss. First off, hands down. Great dude. I enjoyed just having a great conversation with him. Um. Got a chance to, I won actually a signed hat, um, and he personalized it to me. So shout out Mike Doss, OSU legend, Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl champion, former Bengal, the whole nine. Um, so I, I'm at an event with, with Mike Doss and, um. The crazy thing was is Jasmine had actually picked up an evening shift to, to dance, uh, to teach her dance class that she, um, she teaches, uh, a couple days, a weeks, uh, zoom and fitness, check her out. Esporta LA Fitness. Listen, you're in the city. You check my wife's dance class out. It's is fire. Listen. But anyway, um, so I'm working late for this, uh, work event and she is. Is, is teaching a class and usually I'm home before she's able to, um, to leave for this class so that I can, you know, be a father, parent, put the kids to bed, get'em ready for dinner, you know, get dinner ready for'em if, um, she doesn't have time to do it. But, um. Last night really was I was gonna meet her because my event was going late. I was gonna meet her at the gym. We would do kind of a, a smooth handoff where she was able to drop, you know, uh, jump a to class. I take the kids, we switch vehicles, and then, you know, I, I take care of the nighttime duties. So, um, I'm walking back to my car. Um, I'm at a very popular, actually very popular, very safe neighborhood in, um, I'm parked in a parking garage. I didn't park like a jerk. I'm perfectly straight backed in, you know, my Dodge Charger looks fantastic in this parking spot. Okay. Um, and as I'm walking back to my car, I'm like cheese and ear to ear.'cause I got this sign hat by, uh, from Mike Doss. I've made some great networking connections. I'm just really looking forward to, you know, Jasmine that sent me on an errand before I pick up the kids to go pick up something that she bought off Facebook Marketplace because she lives on Facebook marketplace like most of our wives do. Um, so I'm. Walking to my car, there's trick or treaters around and, uh, I'm looking, I'm smiling at all the kids' costumes and all the, the parent costumes, getting ideas for our kids for, uh. For trick or treating this year. And um, as I'm walking up to my car, I, I had to do like one of those double takes where I'm like, did I, did I do that? Like, wait, what, what is, that's not my car. Like, I hit the, but my, my remote start and it beeped and it's turned on. I'm like, what is going on my front bumper?'cause I backed in, like I said, didn't park like a jerk. I backed in very nice, very straight. My front bumper is on the pavement. I'm like, what, what, what is, what's going on? And sure enough, my, my front headlight, my front pad, driver's side headlight is completely out. Um, someone has, um, destroyed the front end of my car, uh, in the parking lot. Um, and so what happened was is IFI mean, I don't really, I'm gonna be frank with you. This is the first time I've ever dealt with a situation where somebody is, you know, hit and run essentially. So I'm, um. I'm just kinda like frantic of like, what do I do? I'm walking around like looking to see if there's cameras, like looking to see, there are people who are like walking by me and they're like looking at the vehicle, the car, and not like giving, giving me that face like, Ugh, glad that's not me. You know what I mean? Like as they're going, taking their kids to trick or treating and I happen to walk. A little bit out of the parking garage. And these ladies who, um, were bartenders, uh, they set up an outdoor like mini bar for parents as they were walking their kids trick or treating. Um, and uh, I just happened to ask like, Hey, um, you know, have you, did you guys see anything? And one lady act, actually both of'em were like, we actually heard a loud crash about 40 minutes ago. Um. What's going on? And then I walked out and showed her and she goes, oh my gosh, my car is literally right. And her car was right in front of, of mine. She drove a Tesla, and, and she, uh, was hoping, I was hoping that her car in Century mode caught the accident. Didn't, but she actually heard it and saw the truck that hit my car, um, because they immediately hit and then evaded the, uh, the parking garage as soon as it happened. Um, so I had to call the police and, uh, call the security people to come and like take a statement down, which, uh, is never fun. Um. And like I said, I was very fortunate that there were multiple witnesses that saw the, the vehicle. And on top of that, there was a camera that was right in front of the parking garage. So, um, you know, I don't wish any ill will to that person, but they're gonna get caught. So, um, but uh, I dealt with that all the while. I am supposed to pick up the kids now. I'd already was supposed to pick up the kids at like seven. I'm leaving the event at like six 15. I'm giving myself enough time to get to the, the, the gym in a timely manner. And of course I am now very late because I'm waiting on the cops to get there to make a statement. We don't security to get there. Um, I don't wanna call her, uh, because Jasmine uses her phone for the music, for the, uh, the show. Uh, the show. Huh? The dance class. So I'm literally just. I hope that she's just not frantic, or I hope the kids aren't like going insane while she's trying to teach a class and she's subbing, so it isn't her class that she's teaching. So it's, it's a whole thing. So all in all, I right around about seven 30 ish, I finish up with the police report. I, um. I kind of like lift my bumper off of the ground and it's not completely off. It's just kinda like half fallen off. It looks real janky. Um, I, I kinda like re-took it in. It doesn't look good, but it's able to at least be somewhat drivable because the police officer essentially told me, he goes, Hey, listen, like if I see this on the street, I'd pull you over. You need to get some rope or something and tie it together and, um, I don't wanna do that. So, um, yeah, so I, I get it all together. I, I pull it up and then I start driving to go pick up her, um, the thing that she picked up for on, on piece of marketplace, like every 10 or 15 minutes, I'm like pulling over and pulling the, the, the, uh, front bumper up to make sure that I don't get pulled over. It, it was a mess. Um, I ended up getting to the gym right at about eight o'clock. I'm walking up the stairs because I'm not gonna go home. I'm looking at where I'm at, at this event towards where she's at, and I'm like, no, there's no way that I'm getting there exactly. As soon as her, uh, her class is over. So I'm like, well, I'm not gonna not. At least show up because, you know, I'm not saying that she'll ever be upset with me, but I'm like, I just need to at least attempt to try and get there. So I get there as people are walking outta her class and she, as I'm walking upstairs, she's walking out and she's looking at me and she's kinda laughing. The kids are, are, yeah, it's a whole thing. Um, and apparently the kids, you know. Uh, are kind of wild during the class. On top of that, um, earlier in that day we had to take Zuri to, to urgent care. She had a fever of 103 and which came outta completely nowhere. So that's, that's wild. In its own, own, own right. But, um, now we're down to one car, which is even more fun. So, um. You are gonna talk about a chaotic week and a chaotic situation. Eventually my car was over 10 years old. We were already planning on at some point replacing it, but it was, now it's replacing it a little bit earlier than what we initially thought we were going to, uh, to replace it. So, um, and it brought up an interesting conversation between JA and I because, um, even for us in the past, a lot of people would have. Had have looked at this, especially Christians that have looked at this and said, you know, uh, this is the enemy coming against us and attacking us. Um, and when we talked about it last night, we were both kind of like, no, I don't feel that. I feel like this is just life. Laughing, like there are gonna be good days and bad days and I want this to be an encouragement to realize.'cause at the end of the day, all I could do is just kind of laugh at it. Does it suck that we're gonna have to have a car payment on a car that we haven't had a car payment on in five years? Yes. But. At the end of the day, we're, we're fine, we're healthy. At least it what we weren't in the car when the car got, you know, hit or anything along those lines. But, um, yeah, life is just life making and that's what happens. Life could sort at you. So we, we look at it with a smile. It goes back to what we said, you know, in an episode before we talked about, well, this matter in five years, no. No, it won't. It won't. So it's really not that, um, that huge. Um, and for those that are probably wondering, no, Justin was not upset. It was a really good laugh for, for both of us. The kids were doing the most, of course, during the class. Kyrie wants to dance during the class like mommy, but she, he also was tasked with making sure Naya was okay and Zuri had a fever. So she's sitting in a corner trying to. Just keep it together during this entire time. So, geez, God bless the kids, God bless her. And the people in the class understood. I mean, most of them are parents and understood that, um, you know, things happen if this isn't a normal cadence for Jasmine that have the kids in class. And, um, that was that one anomaly This week originally was supposed to be controlled chaos, which was really supposed to be a, a lot about my story, my upbringing, my family, uh, the uniqueness of my family, I should say. Jazz and I both come from collegiate athlete backgrounds. This week really reminded me of a quote that a former coach told me that I also want to leave as encouragement for those that are listening. But, um, a coach used to tell us that there is a circle. There is a circle, the circle of life, or a circle or your bubble, essentially. And in that bubble that we work in, everything inside that bubble that are things that you can control, everything outside of the bubble is. And are things that you cannot control. And what I realized over the years and what the message that he was conveying, you know, at that time was, look at every situation. Like I look at the situation that happened with my car, with my wonderful wife getting laryngitis and not being here tonight as. What are things that I can control and are those things that are within my control? All those things are not within my control, so there is no reason for me to overly harp on those, circumstances. So I always want to, uh, or one of the things I wanna, I wanna reiterate is look at some of the negative things that happened to you from the bubble mentality. Is this something that's within your control? Is this something that's without your control? And if it's something that's not within your control, don't give it any, any power. Don't give any strength. So a couple last, last kind of things as I, uh, that, that I'm gonna go over, um, in this mini episode is that I want you guys to think about is, uh, if you're in your own life, being life season, you're not failing, you are just human. Okay? We all go through life in life, lifeing moments, um, not everything's attacked from the enemy. Being able to have that discernment to realize that, hey, man, sometimes life is just gonna life. Um, that's kind of the point of being human. Um, I'm very grateful that I have a great family, a great support system, great wife that, um, you know, a lot of stuff like this breaks people. Having to deal with a major purchase, like, uh, a new car unexpectedly, a new house, a house, you know, something breaking in the house, a kid with a dangerously high fever, uh, and knowing when and how to run with the flow. And go with the flow. So. By all means, you know, take your small wins. I, I look at LA yesterday as I got a chance to meet a guy that I grew up watching that, uh, really inspired me to play the game of football. And I love, makes me love football and Mike Doss and, um, nothing, not even someone hitting, running. My, my vehicle is going to, uh, take away the joy of meeting just an all around great human being. All right, so that's gonna be the end of Ian Unplugged on Hula Adult Edition.
