In today’s episode, Keith Pasqualone continues his powerful testimony, sharing what life looked like after prison and how God’s grace opened the door for him to step into ministry. Keith talks about the birth of Freedom by Truth, the outreach he now leads to help others find the same hope and transformation he experienced. His story is a reminder that redemption doesn’t end at release—it grows, it serves, and it inspires. You can also find Freedom by Truth on Facebook to learn more about their mission.
Hey, welcome back to Battleground Believers. We're back in the studio in the two-bar blue studio. Thank you to Randy Barr. He's on the keys making me look oh so beautiful. And uh cut this area out if you would, sir. And post. Again, Matt Carter's back with us. Feels like the whole family's together. Got it back together. Again this week, Keith Pascalone.
SPEAKER_01He nailed it. Pascalone, real quick. Yeah, I nailed it.
SPEAKER_03And uh uh had an awesome time last week here in your testimony. We're kind of blown away. You go from prisoner to pro-golfer, you have a a career, a family, two uh God-fearing boys, and a and a godly marriage, and really had the chance to to kind of hear from uh hurt to redemption, you know, mistakes to to redemption. And this week, what we want to do is look on the other side, right? Of how all that stuff worked to where we're at now. And you're involved in a ministry, yes, sir, and uh we're gonna talk about that ministry, let you share the name and and kind of talk through your vision of what you guys hope to accomplish with that, and uh we'll just kind of discuss that ministry, and uh we want to help promote that. So as you have events, make sure you uh reach out to us. We're on all kinds of streaming sites. Uh, pretty much where you find any of your um uh podcasts, you'll find us, but also we Facebook, Instagram, and um TikTok. That's a big place where we make shorts and just kind of try to give people an idea of what who we are and what we're about, and then also promote things uh that are going on. So uh without further ado, we'll hand it back over to Keith and let him share about his ministry and and uh what what his vision is and the goal and just share what God's kind of doing in your life now.
SPEAKER_01Well, praise the Lord. Uh in order to get to the ministry uh that I'm currently involved with by the grace of God, I'd like to go back a little bit and talk about as soon as I got out of prison what kind of happened to kind of you know paint a picture of how we're at this point right now. So um, you know, I get out of prison and I get involved with what's called God Care's Ministry, and it doesn't exist anymore because the guy who founded it passed away. But so basically what happened was is I was in state work release and I met I met a gentleman by the name of Don Schoen. Don Schoen was uh another inmate. He was Italian, so we bonded there and he loved Jesus, so we bonded there, of course, too. And he was just a huge encouragement to me. Like this guy, I could see the love of Jesus in his eyes, and so we just bonded together, and so he was gonna get out before I did, and he told me he was gonna go to God Cares Ministry, and uh it was a ministry that was designed to help people who get out of jail and prison. And so basically, you'd get an apartment, you paid 280 bucks a month. That was for the apartment, that was for your utilities, that was for a corded phone back then. You know, we had four you know, phones with cords on them, you know, on the wall back then. You know, I'm getting old now, I'm 50.
SPEAKER_03So way too, 51.
SPEAKER_01So, you know, thank God for that, by the way. But uh so you have seven. So, so 20. No way, man. I just met him for the first time, so don't know his age, but man, he's looking good for whatever age he's at. So uh, yeah, so so when I met Yvonne, my wife, that I was telling you about, I knew I had to live in this area because we got engaged, obviously. So I'm like, what am I gonna do? I don't know anybody in the South Bend area. Remember, I was at South Bend State Worker Lease. So I start looking for places to stay. I'm like, wait a minute, my buddy Don's in a ministry. He gave me his number, so I called him and I said, Hey Don, I said, I'm engaged to this woman, I need to live in this area. I'm feeling called by God to live in this area because I'm marrying this woman and I got it, I got a job, and you know, so everything's going good. And so can you help me out? He goes, Yeah, you can come live with me. I'll talk to the owner. So I was able to move him because he had a he had a two-bedroom apartment in South Bend. It was all by God Cares Ministry. There was like a two-floor, uh, two-floor apartment building, and they owned the apartments in there. And again, this whole design for this ministry was to help guys who get out of jail and prison, be in a godly environment. Right? You were required to go to church, you were required to work, and you were required to meet together and pray for each other. And um, so I get out, I move in with him because I didn't want to live with my wife until we got married. That was huge for us.
SPEAKER_03So that's that was huge for us.
SPEAKER_01That was real big for us, and so so I get out, right, and I'm in this ministry, and then of course, um Yvonne and I get married, and we get our own apartment in Elkhart because I I worked in Elkhart, and so we found a place in Elkhart, and of course, we have a house there now. And so, anyways, um, while I'm in God cares ministry, Don Schoen says, Hey Keith, you want to go into the St. Joseph County Jail and minister? And I'm like, Man, that sounds like a good idea, but you got to be out of prison for two years before that happens. He goes, Oh no, I know the chaplain. I'm out of prison maybe about six months at this point. And I felt very called strongly to do ministry, whether that be to speak at church, anywhere I went, I just wanted to serve the Lord. And but I felt, you know, the strong calling when Don asked me to go back into the county jail. So I said, yes, let's do this. I prayed about it, yes, let's do this. Next thing you know, we go into the county jail for orientation and we're off and running doing this jail ministry. I was part of that for by the grace of God for 16 years, going into the county jail. We got one classroom, and they would bring in 25 inmates about from two pods, and we had them for two hours. And we were able to, you know, listen to godly music, sing worship. I brought in a boom box, we would sing together, and then uh I would hand out prayer cards because I believed strongly in prayer. So, what I would do is I'd give the guys a index card and say, if you want, write your name. If you want, you don't have to, you could be anonymous, write your prayer request on it. I want to pray for you because people prayed for me when I got saved, and I know that's huge. And so then we would do the prayer, you know, and then I would preach or teach, you know, for 45 minutes, and then we would close and I'd be in there for about two hours, and uh basically we took turns so we were on a rotation so that we would because it was Saturday evening, that way we would have Saturdays with our families too. So I was going in maybe about two times a month on average for about 16 years. And so, because of that, of course, that led to more ministry opportunities. Uh, went to a couple prisons in the state of Indiana. Again, this is all by the grace of God to speak. And as you can imagine being a former convicted felon going into the jail setting, going into the prison setting, and saying, This is how God is using me, and this is the success I'm experiencing. It really resonates with the inmates because I remember when I was locked up and guys would come in who were former inmates and they were doing good, they were out for five, ten, fifteen, whatever how many years, but they were doing great. They had jobs, they had families, and and and I had that vision that I believe God put on my heart for my life. So, um, so yeah, so did jail and prison ministry for about 16, 17 years. And then what happened was as my boys were growing up, me and my wife decided to get involved with the youth at our church. I go to Yellow Creek Mennonite Church out in the Goshen area. Uh, because when I first got out of prison, my wife said, Let's go to my church. And I said, What kind of church do you go to? She goes, Mennonite. And I go, is that horse and buggy? Because I didn't know any better, right? She goes, No, silly, it's just, you know, it's a Christian church and we love Jesus and we're about peace. And like, okay, I'll check it out. So I get out of prison. Now imagine this. I get out of prison and I am at this church, which is out in the country in Goshen, right? And it's testimony time. And the pastor knows I'm coming, and the pastor actually encouraged my wife to pursue me if I was a Christian, even though I was in prison. So I knew this had to be a special place for a pastor to think like that. So um, you know, of course he said use caution, but you know, but the point was the pastor was not against our relationship because he said, he said, if he knows Christ, you need to think about it, you know, you know, at least pray about it. So we get out, we go, we go to this church, it's my second week out of prison, and we go to this church, and it's me and my fiance now, and she's been there her whole life. And so they have testimony time, and I stand up, and I know when I walk into this church, there's no other convicted felon in this place. I mean, you can just tell. It's obvious. These are like farming people, right? And they're great people, by the way. They've put up with me for 26 years now. So, but I stand up and I say, My name's Keith Pascalone, and by the grace of God, I'm here today. And I just got out of prison, I'm engaged to Yvonne here, and uh just thankful that that God freed me from uh, you know, my my sin, my sinful lifestyle of, you know, chasing money and drugs and the fast life, and uh I'm just excited to see what he's gonna do with the rest of my life. And I sat down, and the congregation's reaction was to come up to me after the service, like three-quarters of them, and either shake my hand or give me a hug or say, wow, we're so glad you're here today. And I just felt called to stay there with my wife. And of course, we eventually got married there, raised our kids there. But, anyways, the point is I felt called to do youth ministry there. So we were what was called youth sponsors, right? I'm sure you guys are familiar with that. So we basically um, you know, did that for so many years, and I was kind of at a point where you know I'm I'm out there speaking and I'm preaching and I'm teaching, but I didn't there was no name to it. So I'd been praying about a ministry for years, right? I wanted to start something, right, by the grace of God. So by the grace of God, me and John Raleigh hooked back up. We used to work together, and I always I always talk to him about faith in the Lord, but he wasn't like a hundred percent receptive, you could tell. He wasn't against it, but you could tell he wasn't at a point where he really believed. There you go, that's the best thing to say about that. And so I go into the county jail with my church to serve a meal, and I post about it on Instagram, right? John Raleigh sees this, and he just decided that he needed to be serious about his faith. So he uh he decided that he was sick and tired of being sick and tired, and he he's like, Jesus, I need you in my life. And so now he's all excited about Christ and he sees my post and he reaches out to me. He says, Dude, we gotta get together and do a Christian rap song. And I'm like, I'm like, you know, at this point I'm 49. I'm like, what's you know? I love gospel rap, by the way. I really love gospel rap and gospel hip hop uh and also gospel hard rock. I'm into them things a lot.
SPEAKER_02Gospel hard rock. Oh man, brothers.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02We'll talk about some bands after.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, yeah, absolutely. But uh, so so John gets a hold of me and says, Let's do a gospel rap song. And I'm thinking, is this crazy? And I'm like, okay, let's do it. So I go over to his house and we start fellowshipping because he's like, hey, brother, I really need you in my life. And I'm like, well, guess what? I need you in my life too. We need each other as brothers in Christ, and I know this. This is vital. This is vital. If you if you have a desire to be godly, right? That God puts this desire and in your in your heart to know him, you have to be surrounded by other brothers and sisters in Christ.
SPEAKER_00You have to.
SPEAKER_01And uh, so me and John hook up and we start working on this gospel rap song. I come up with the concept of the song, right? Never done a rap song before. He does all the beats and everything, and he puts it together so eloquently. And uh, like we just kept coming up with good ideas, and next thing you know, we released this song. So, as we're going through this writing the song process, we've been talking about it, talking about it, and we said, let's start a ministry. And we named it Freedom by Truth Ministries. And uh I just want to read what we put on our Facebook page here. It's a new covenant ministry focused on Christ to encourage believers and to help the lost find rest. That's our mission statement. And so our vision, because we talked about the vision for the ministry, our vision was let's just let God use us in any way he wants, whether it's through music, whether it's uh going out and giving gift cards away, like we've gone out and given gift cards, like Casey's gas station gift cards, so people can get gas. We were able, by the grace of God, to bless a lady that I know at my work. She's a single mother, she has multiple kids, and one of her kids uh has been going through like cancer treatment and you know, medical bills piling up a little bit. And we do have good insurance, but the medical bills pile up. So we were able to bless her with a $250 Meyer gift card so she could buy groceries. You know, so uh we're we're we're trying to not limit God in what He can do through us. Uh uh John just recently reached out to me, my ministry partner, about going to a homeless shelter and raising money to help with clothes. Uh, you know, just any way that God wants to use us, we're open to it. Uh the main thrust though is when we teach and preach, it's about Jesus and it's about the new covenant. So um, because we do want to be a teaching and preaching ministry, and we want to be an evangelistic ministry too, of course, always reaching out to the lost, but that's just kind of the initial vision of what we are trying to accomplish uh through the motivation of the Holy Spirit. So guys have any questions about that?
SPEAKER_03I that that sounds cool. And what we as Battleground believers, I think we align like like some of our hopes and dreams, align exactly what your ministry is doing. Uh, but we can definitely promote as you guys do things and um uh keep everybody informed, especially as you're I was thinking, man, as soon as we're done, I'm gonna go on Facebook and find your guys' page and start following that so we can follow. But uh it'd be great to to to partner.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Let's do it. Amen.
SPEAKER_03And uh we can talk about how that'll look, you know, off air. But um the what's the like for us, I I think our driving force for battleground believers was we want people to see uh the gospel, but we want them to understand, like to me, the best way to share the gospel is not just throw a bunch of Bible verses at. You know, and John, and but if I can say, hey, I was this way, yes, I met Jesus and now I'm this way, nobody can debate that.
SPEAKER_00Yes, right?
SPEAKER_03They can't say, well, yes. They can't debate the fact that you've been changed. Yes. And so that's what how kind of what the start of this was was hey, we want people to be able to look and say, if Brad can make it, if Matt can make it, if Randy can make it, if Keith can make it. Yes. And my story, I have things that I dealt with that I know there's people dealing with. Now I didn't go to prison or anything.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03Uh, but there's gonna be guys that are either dealing drugs right now that happen to see this, or just went to prison. Hopefully, my hope with this episode is somehow it trickles down into the prison system.
SPEAKER_00Amen. It can. Yeah, it can, brother.
SPEAKER_03Uh, but there might be somebody sitting in prison, like feeling the call of God, but scared to death because of like if I if I give my life to God, I'm not gonna somebody's gonna hit resonate very strongly with yours and all the the guests we had, and that's kind of the vision when we first started is we want to spread the gospel. Yes, you know, Paul did it by walking around and getting beat up and thrown in prison.
SPEAKER_01We're doing it through social media and yes, so trying not to get beat up. So I I would like to point out something you said because I think this will resonate with the listeners, okay? You brought up something that is very important. So I've been very blessed throughout my time as being saved to to be able to study the word through Taylor University, uh, Bethel University, and Moody Bible Institute. I don't have a degree, but I've I've I've taken a lot of classes. And um the one thing I learned about as a young believer through Taylor University was this thing called personal evangelism, right? So there's intrusive evangelism where you go out and you quote verses and you shout at people. Yeah. But there's personal evangelism, what you just described, where you get to know somebody, you share your testimony. I believe that is the most effective form of evangelism. And it's what you guys are doing right here. You're getting personal, you're bringing people in, you're saying, hey, tell your story. That I think is what resonates with people, and that's what brings people to the gospel because they see the change in people. You know what I'm saying? They're going through, oh my gosh, I'm going through that right now. And God's helping this person who went through this, then they that sparks a hope in them, and then they turn their faith towards Christ and they get saved. And so I think it's so critical uh with what you guys are doing. And when you invited me to this, why I was so I mean, you could tell right away, I was like, let's do it. Yeah, you know, right away, you know, right away. I was like, let's do this because I thought it was such a good idea that you know that God would give you guys, you know, this wisdom and idea to do this, and um, but personal evangelism is is the way to go. I'm not saying intrusive evangelism isn't important at times, but I think if you really want to to see people come to Christ and you want to see people become disciples, personal evangelism is definitely the way to go.
SPEAKER_03I I was in the military and uh my pastor at the time when I was in the army, he used to say, I don't want to fire a shotgun with evangelism, with butt shot. He's like, I'd rather use a sniper rifle. Yes, because I know I'm gonna hit my target. Not that there's nothing wrong with the other style, but he said, for me and the amount of time that I have and my abilities, yeah, I'd rather use a sniper rifle and zone in on my target and then move from target to target rather than just spray and pray, as they say. Amen.
SPEAKER_01You know, um there's a there's a verse that you bring that comes to mind, you bringing that up, that I think is very verse that is often overlooked. And it's where Paul says, I have become all things to all men. Paul became a tactician in his evangelism to the point where he could meet anybody from any type of background and learn about them. I think this is the biggest problem we have with Christians is it's not that you don't have Jesus and you want to share it, it's just you don't take the time to get to know people, meaning ask them the questions instead of coming out with Jesus right away. And I'm not saying that doesn't work sometimes, get to know somebody, ask them what their life is like, what do they believe, what do they think? And guess what happens when you do that? They're more apt to listen to you. They do care because you care. Exactly. And people, if they don't see love in the message of Christ, they're not coming to it. That's what that's what drew me to Christ was the fact that I shared in the last episode, for God so loved the world, when I realized He loved me, it was like, God, please help me. Lord, please come into my life and change my life because I'm miserable without you. And that can only be accomplished if we depend on Jesus. And that is our ministry, right there. Our ministry is literally we depend on Jesus for everything, right? Christ said, Apart from me, you can do nothing. That means nothing. Man, that scripture keeps coming back because it it it it's it's something I've been focusing on now for about three years, and I keep going back to it as a reminder. This isn't about me getting better, this is about me depending on Jesus more in every area of my life. If you want a good marriage, like if your listeners today are struggling in their marriage, depend on Jesus for your marriage. Watch how that changes your marriage. Because I'm gonna tell you what, apart from Christ, I would be a terrible husband. But if you were to ask my wife, does she feel loved? Am I loyal to her, right? Am I honest to her? She would say yes. She would not doubt that. Why? Because Christ has shown me how to love her, not because I'm some great guy. And I'm just telling you, when you learn how to depend on Jesus, that's when the love, that's when the joy, that's when the peace flow through. And I am a firm believer in that. And that's what our ministry is about. You know, that's cool.
SPEAKER_03So I was just thinking while you were talking, there's a scripture that says, if I can do all things and fathom all things, but have not love.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I am nothing. 1 Corinthians 13, brother. I never get the references.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, I know it's in the Bible, but um, when I think of that, that's kind of the idea. And I think about that when I'm talking to people, because a lot of times we I think we look at people and we just kind of dismiss them.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, we're we're we're too fast. Uh amen. What what's the what's the guy's name? There's a guy that gave an allergy, and I I think about it, and he's talking about uh a penny, right? Like a penny's nothing. Uh and we just discard pennies all day long. How many times do we walk by pennies? But in the same hand, how many times do we walk by people all day long?
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_03You know, that penny was created by somebody, it was made by somebody. There's a purpose for that penny. Now, we might think it's nothing. There's a reason that penny existed. We treat people like pennies all the time and walk right by people that are hurting, that may need a smile, a touch, uh, may need the gospel. And and we're so caught up in our lives, God may say, Hey, I need to tell this person about the Lord. But I'm so busy going where I'm going or doing what I'm doing that I'm missing those prompts from the Holy Spirit. And I think that's kind of your ministry, kind of sounds like you guys go put on the brakes, look around our community, yes, and help people that are in need. And look at those pennies that most people just walk past and go. It's not worth picking up because it's just a penny, and that's not the reality. That's right. So, man, good discussion today. I'm gonna cough here since I already clapped one time. It's a good thought to get there, get rid of that. Randy's got a smile on his face, so we know we're doing good. So, um, what's the name of that ministry again?
SPEAKER_01Freedom by Truth Ministries, and we are on Facebook and we are in on Instagram also right now, and uh we're gonna expand to YouTube here soon. And so, right now, just so uh if anyone wants to follow, right now, what we're doing is we always post memory verse Monday and Friday funnies. So we're a little funny on Friday, right? Where we post a you know a meme or something to make people laugh. Laughter was created by God. We need to I I I tend to take myself too seriously sometimes, and I need to laugh once in a while.
SPEAKER_03That's my strength.
SPEAKER_01So, so and that's good, brother. I love people who laugh. It's it they bring joy to my heart. So um, and we also post videos like when we're out doing ministry, for example, just so the listeners know, we went into the county jail, Freedom by Truth Ministries with my church. So me and John went in with my church and we served an inmate to the meals. It's called the holiday meal. We do it at Elkhart County Jail every year, and we take in smoked turkey. I mean, like this is a real deal Thanksgiving feast, and we take it into these inmates and we feed it to them and we tell them that we're here because Jesus loves you. That is the whole thrust of it. We're here because he loves us and we love you. And so, like, we video recorded us going in, we got a picture, we posted it on there. So, any ministry stuff that's going on, we do take a quick, you know, video, you know, and just let people know that hey, there are people out here who care. There are people out here who love in Jesus' name, and we hope that that encourages other people to do the same thing. It's not about getting rich, it's not about I don't want any, I don't want any donation or money from anybody who thinks we're about money. I don't I don't want that. What I want is people to get encouragement. That's what I want, and to get love, the love of Christ. Wow, that's so man.
SPEAKER_02I I don't know about you. I got I got literal goosebumps just thinking about that.
SPEAKER_01And we've given out like I share with you guys, we've given out more money than we've received. I mean, you know, and we're okay with that because we know that right now that Jesus is working through us, and that's what really matters to impact lives. That's what really matters.
SPEAKER_03Well, as soon as we get some uh some of your stuff, uh we're gonna wait till your episodes come out. Yeah, yeah, we're gonna we're gonna promote the crap out of your can I say it like that? We're gonna promote the heck out of your your ministry and hopefully uh uh be involved and hopefully maybe someday we can bring you and your ministry partner in here and talk about what's going on, especially as as things happen and uh those kind of things.
SPEAKER_01You should you should have him as a guest sometime, I would encourage you because his story is it's incredible. Like you think my story is cool, I think his is better, in my opinion. I know it's not a comparison thing, but his story encourages me as a believer.
SPEAKER_03So well we'll look I would that's what we're looking for. We're looking for inter not just interesting stories. We had a guy in here last week, his name was our wasn't that was a few weeks ago. His name is Mike Miller, he's a police officer.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03If you watch his episodes, he said in the beginning, he's like, eh, you know, I'm just boring. I've been a Christian my whole life. And I'm like, you did it right.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03And I and the way I said it to him was, listen, that's the best testimony ever.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no. Amen. Yeah. You know, I I you know He didn't look at it that way. Just because I know, of course, some of your people that are listening are believers, and they're like, Well, I don't have no crazy I went to prison testimony. And for that I say, praise God and use that as a testimony because I admire people that I meet in the church that grew up in a Christian home and they have the faith of Christ, and they didn't have to go through all the garbage I went through. And I know God uses the garbage I went through to his advantage and to help encourage others, but man, if you don't have to go through that, don't go through that. You know, make the wise decisions, right? The the word is very clear make the wise godly decisions because it is so much better to live that way. I'm I'm I mean, look at look what God's done in my life. Yeah, does it look like I'm living my best life now or before I got saved? I'm living the best life now because I'm living it as the way God intended, which was to know his son Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that's what I that's what I said to him. And he's like, I never I never really thought of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he never thought of it that way.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, but anyway, um, great conversation today. Really excited about this new ministry herd. Uh, we're gonna follow it and we'll promote it on our social network so that you guys can find it as well. And uh, if you're ever uh I don't know if you guys take donations.
SPEAKER_01Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so we'll try to promote that and let people know through our social media, like the best way to to give to what you guys got going on. And uh just super excited about uh uh first off, the the very first episode we did with you where you shared your testimony. I was kind of riveted and and really caught up in the moment and the story and uh the the act of redemption and the the the depths you can go and the heights you can rise to, even in the uh through life. And uh there is somebody right now that is in the depths of hell that is is crying out and they don't know what they're crying out for, and the answer to that is Jesus Christ. He went to the cross, he died on the cross for our sins, and the passion of Christ catches a glimpse, but it Jesus, the real Jesus, wishes the crucifixion was just that bad. Because it was so much much worse than what we saw on the screen. And for a man to do that for me, I I can't I can I can't put into words when I look at my own life and who I am that he still did that and the things I've done in my life, that he would still do that and love me. And not just not just die for the sins so that we can go to heaven, but to have a daily personal relationship. So you I can tell you talk to God every day. Amen. You probably read your word every day. And that is the essence of faith. And by praying every day, by reading your Bible every day, that's gonna drive you to the ministry that you're doing. Looking at people as not worthless pennies, but as humans created by God to be loved and need to hear the story.
SPEAKER_00Praise the Lord.
