Hey, welcome back to Battleground Believers. Uh, thank you so much for being a part of the audience. Remember, we're on YouTube, Spotify, and many other streaming sites. Uh, like, share, subscribe really helps the channel. We want this to be a ministry, not just uh we're not just trying to get TikTok famous, uh, but we're trying to spread the gospel. And we decided to use uh a podcast and and people's testimonies to to spread that gospel. And uh again this week, uh Matt Carter's still with us.
SPEAKER_03Go figure.
SPEAKER_00Uh Keith Cascagone is with us again this week, and uh just having a great time this morning. And I wish we would record all the stuff that we talk about off air, uh, because we've been so blessed this morning uh after the episode end, having conversation about our relationships with the Lord, uh things we dealt with, um, and things like that. Again, our tagline is telling his story through your story, and I think as you watch the episodes, or you've you should have watched the first two episodes, um, you'll see God's story come out through what you've gone through and and and shared the gospel through what you've done and what you've experienced, and and going from tragedy and and loss and and and mistakes to to redemption. But we were talking just a few minutes ago, and we thought, man, this would be a great thing to to bring in here. We want to kind of go through like some of the struggles, right, that you've dealt with.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And uh, because I think sometimes we look at people and we go, look, that guy's got it together. Amen. And the truth is is they got it together because they lean on Jesus.
SPEAKER_02Amen.
SPEAKER_00But they didn't, they went through a time, and still, even today, you might struggle today. But so as you became a Christian and you started growing through your faith, what are some struggles that you you went through? Let's kind of discuss that so people can see, hey, you don't just get saved and you're perfect and things are great. Yes, you get saved, you struggle, you learn, God loves you and and guides you through that. So let's let's hear some of the what you dealt with, if you don't mind.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely. So um, you know, when I first got saved, you know, a lot of peace, a lot of joy, you know, you're this you're this baby Christian, as they say, right? And uh was just out there preaching the gospel, loving Jesus, and uh, you know, just having a great time, you know, going through prison and just telling people about Christ, whether they would receive it or not. I know that's their choice, but uh just the the blessing to be able to do that, to know God and to make him known. And um, so you know, I as I shared previously, I got into studying the word deeply. And when I was in prison, it was nothing for me to go six, eight hours in a day. Um, and part of the problem with that though can also be is you get puffed up in your flesh. And so, you know, I went to I went to uh multiple Bible schools, sorry, biblical study schools, so like Taylor University, uh Bethel College, and Moody Bible Institute, and was learning from there. And uh, I just think part of the battle with that was is I had all this information and all this knowledge about the word, and I became dependent on that. And I think Jesus really brings it into perspective of what it's about when he says to the Pharisees and Sadducees that you think that you have eternal life because you possess the scriptures, yet you refuse to come to me. So, in other words, it's good to have the book, right? It's good to have the Bible. But if you have the Bible and miss Jesus, you're missing the whole point because the whole thing points to him. So, what happened was is I was in this battle and the struggle, like, okay, God, what's going on here? I I I I I I I love you, I know you love me. I'm going to Bible school, I'm going into the county jail to preach, I'm sharing my testimony. Why is there this struggle in this battle? And the and the revealing thing that he showed to me through learning the new covenant was is at times I was depending on my flesh instead of depending on Jesus. And so what that did was is when you depend on your flesh, right, you don't have peace, you don't have joy, because your flesh is wired to get you to not, because of the fall, is wired to get you to not live life dependent on God. The flesh, so the Greek word sarks is the word flesh, right? And so that is any part of you that tries to live independent of God. Now we all know we're designed to live dependent on God. So what can happen is, like, for example, the apostle Paul, he goes in to brag about his flesh. You know, he says, uh, I was a Pharisee, right? Which was the best sect of Judaism back then, according to him, of course. Right. Right? He was circumcised on the eighth day. He's literally going in to brag about his flesh there, right? A Hebrew of Hebrews, he says. But what he says is he comes to realize none of that mattered. What mattered was him knowing Jesus. So he put that all aside. So, what I would like to encourage believers is through my struggle, is look, don't study the word like you're trying to pass a test, right? Like you did in in grade school and high school. Study the word to know Jesus, and it totally changes the whole thing. Because Paul says that knowing Christ is the greatest thing, right? Right. So if we approach the word as a way to know the author, right? That book, the word is unique because all the other books we study, we study to pass a test or to gain some information. Well, when we're studying the word, we do gain information, we do gain wisdom, but the whole point of the word is to know the author. Yeah, that's the whole point. Yeah, and I'm gonna tell you what, once I got to that point, you know, that were there was some battles there for years in my mind of you know, fighting depression again and fighting, you know, am I really doing what God wants? And and finally, I just the verse we were talking about where Jesus says, apart from me, you can do nothing. I am the vine, you are the branches, right? And what happened was is in that moment when I read that verse, it was, oh my gosh, that Christianity isn't about me getting better, right? Although that does happen, but what Christianity is really about is depending on Jesus for every area of your life, your marriage, your job, right? Yeah, have you ever gone to work? Many of us have and not depended on Jesus that day. How ugly did that get? How bad was your attitude? How bad was your mouth? Right? I can't believe sometimes the words that have come out of my mouth at work as a believer. We've been doing it, right? That's what we've been doing. It's a struggle, it's a battle. And guess what? It's always worse when you're not depending on Jesus. So we just need to learn as believers to depend on Jesus for every every area of our life. Our parenting, our hobbies, sports, golf, right? Michigan football, maybe riding a motorcycle, right? And watch how God transforms that area of your life through that dependency on him. Because that's the gospel, it's depending on Jesus.
SPEAKER_00So well, I was thinking when you were talking, there's a there's a scene in the Bible, and I don't remember if it was Jesus or Paul, but the I think it was the apostles went out and they started casting out demons and healing people, and they come back and they go, I can't believe everything we've done. And look at all this stuff we and and I think Jesus said to him, Don't be don't brag about that. Brag that your name's written in the Lamb's Book of Life. Amen. Interpretation is brag that I have a personal relationship with you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you know God. Yeah, that you know, you know what I'm saying. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I so I agree with a hundred percent. My struggle when I was a young man is I got so busy doing Christianity, yes, that I wasn't a Christian. I knew I for some reason I could read the Bible and retain pretty easily. I could remember scriptures, not necessarily references, but I could remember the scriptures, yes, and I could I could lead people to Christ. The problem is I got so busy doing all that that I walked away from the real intent of everything, which is that relationship with God. And God cares more about me and having a relationship with me personally than what I'm doing. Now, I'm not saying he didn't bless some of that because the people needed to hear it, but at some point he would check me. Hey, this has got to be about you and me and a personal relationship with me, and not your skills and ability that I've given you to go do, and I let it become something like look at me, I can talk to anybody and tell them about Jesus. Yeah, and my life crumbled and crumbled to the point where I walked away from God because I was so mad. I was mad at myself, but I I I rejected God and pointed all my anger towards him. Yes. Because I didn't depend on him.
SPEAKER_02Amen. Amen. And you know, um, I think the other thing through the struggle, you know, as believers, um I think the struggle leads us to the dependence on him, you know, and my thing is is no matter what, he is faithful to you, right? Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you. Mentioned multiple times in the book of Hebrews. And that's been a a verse that I have fallen upon and and relied upon multiple times. That he's being faithful to me, whether it's going great, whether it's going bad, right? And the thing is, is we have to remember that our circumstances do not change our identity in Christ. So what I'm trying to say is you look at what Paul went through, right? He was beaten, left for dead, shipwrecked. I mean, you can go on and on the whole list in prison, right? Uh, but yet he still had joy and he had peace. You know why? Because he knew Christ.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_02His his joy wasn't dependent on if things were going well or whether they were going terrible, right? And and that's the thing that I had to learn as a Christian, right? And it's like, okay, so if I just know Jesus, even if things aren't aren't going so well, I'll have peace and joy. And you can't pay for that. Like to me, peace, my peace that I have with Christ, you just can't you can't wrap a number figure around that. You couldn't pay me for that. Oh, yeah. Right? And and and it's like that's the thing I was searching for really when I was in that lifestyle of selling drugs and getting high. I wanted peace and joy, but the problem was, is I was looking for all that stuff in the wrong places. Only God can supply that. Only God can supply love, only God can supply peace and joy. And no matter what you're going through, this is the beauty of the gospel. No matter what you're going through, you can have that. Circumstances don't take that away unless you allow the enemy to have it. Unless you allow the enemy to steal it. You know, and that's the beauty of this, right? Is is we're learning, and and and I didn't want to, I didn't want to take away from Bible study by what I said. Bible study is important, right? Studying the word is important because it says be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Well, how do you do that? You put truth in there, right? You get truth through God's word, you put it in your mind, and that causes a change in your life. Bible study is very important, but again, it's it it's it's what our ministry is based on. Freedom by truth ministries is staying focused on Christ to what? Encourage believers, which is what's going on today. We're being encouraged by the truth of God's word, and also to call the lost to find rest in Christ, right? Come to me, all who are we all who are weary, and I will give you rest. Right? Yeah, and uh that's the beauty of the gospel. And I'm just so thankful to know Jesus and uh just appreciative to be here today. But this has been such a blessing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean that the whole unfortunately as an audience member, you only get to see the stuff recorded. You don't get to enjoy the the side conversations and the the things we enjoyed today and uh getting to know you on a on a personal level and and finding out things about you and some of those things we found out we're gonna try to figure out a way to share uh uh through our our social medias. But um, yeah, great great conversation uh and a great time together in the Lord. I really feel like today we almost had church. I think we're we're gonna take up an offering after this.
SPEAKER_02Remember that where our two or three are gathered together in my name.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and but I was thinking about when you were talking about you guys ever seen uh the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate?
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes, sir.
SPEAKER_00So, like me, I'm a rage against the machine kind of guy sometimes when I get mad at God. Yes, and there's a scene where the the kids are acting crazy and Willy Wonka's leaning against the wall and he's like, No, please don't. And I felt like sometimes that's where God is. He never left me, he was still there, but I'm going crazy and God's going, Brad, please, no, don't, because he knows I'm not gonna listen to him, and then all of a sudden I hit that brick wall and that punishment or that whatever happens where now I'm down, and then the only way I got the only place I got to look is up, and he's like, I'm still here. Yes, you know, not that he he wants us to fail, but if you're gonna run away from him, he's gonna let you, yes, because that's that's free will experience.
SPEAKER_02It's the choice he gives us. We can either know him or not. Yeah, we can either choose to walk in his truth or not, and as a believer, he's always gonna be there because he is your father, right? Just like any good father is there, but he's gonna let you choose what you're gonna choose because that's what it means to be made in the image. You have a choice, right? He chooses to love us, right? And we get to choose to love him back or not. And uh what I find so amazing is you know, you talk about rage against the machine. I've had that several times as a believer, and I can remember one instance and I want to bring it up. So um I was Monday qualifying for a uh professional event called the Hooters Tour, and it was in South Bend, Indiana. They came to South Bend and I talked to my dad, and uh he uh he's like, Yeah, let's go for it, let's try it. So we're out there Monday qualifying. So I'm in the heat of a Monday qualifier, right? Trying to make it, you know, and into this professional event. And there's one par five, we're on we're on the back nine, and I know they switch the nines now, but the point is, is there was one par five, I hit it in two, right? So I hit the green in two, I'm putting for eagle. Nice, right? And I know I'm close to making it, right? So like one mistake or one good thing happening, yeah, could make it or break it, right? So I three putt. I hit this green in two, and I three putting and I make a par. I walk off the green, and my dad's next to me, he's caddying for me, and I said something mean to God about man, God, don't you ever have my back or have my, you know, have something about you, you, you, don't you ever have my back? Or don't you uh why does this always happen to me? That sort of thing. And think about what the Lord had done to that point. In in jail, in prison, yeah, wife, I mean, all this good stuff going for me. And I say something stupid like that. And so the very next holes of par three, I hit it to six inches, make birdie, and then I get up and down on the last hole to make it in on the number. And you know the lesson I learned from that is God can handle my anger. Yeah, He can handle my insults, He handled the insults of people on the cross, Jesus. Yeah, and sometimes I think as believers, we're afraid to talk to God and say what's on our mind. And sometimes that's our release, right? If we can just go to God and be honest, sometimes we're trying to play church with God who can see all things. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? Like we're trying to say all the right words instead of just going to him and talking to him, you know what I'm saying, and getting it off our chest, right? Releasing it to him. Now, I'm not saying you should be cursing God up and down. That's not what I'm trying to say as a believer, but I think that we need to have the perspective is that God can handle anything we're going through. He's way more than capable of handling anything we're going through. And to go to him and be honest as a believer is a release, right? And we're always gonna come back to, because he's gonna lead us back to look, I know what's best for you. I have a plan for your life, and that plan is better than anything you could dream or imagine. Oh, yeah. That plan is way better. And no matter what you're going through, I'm always there.
SPEAKER_03I love those uh I aha moments or whatever where you like what you were saying, you do this and you have this real conversation with God or whatever. You're like, I don't understand. I don't understand why it has to be this way, this way, this way, this way, this way. And then at some point down your road, it all makes sense, and you're like, Yes, I see now. Like he knew what he was doing from the beginning. Yep. It's like, ah, I see. I see what you were doing. Like that's why it's beautiful through all this first to get to this. Because he sees the end. That's the thing.
SPEAKER_02We don't we don't see tomorrow. We don't really see tomorrow as clear as he does. Now, there's certain things we can see about him that he's made very clear and very known, but we don't, do we really see tomorrow?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02I mean, really? No, you know, yeah, and and and that's the uh that's the challenge, I think, of being a believer is just learning to trust in him, learning to depend on him, and and and knowing that, like you said, that if you're struggling as a believer, he's got you. You have to believe that he's got you, he's got your best interests at heart, and he's going to reveal it eventually while you're going through what you're going through right now. And I've gone through a lot as a believer. Like, you know, people hear my story and they're like, Well, that's great and that's awesome, and but they don't see all the struggles and the challenges. And and I'm here to tell you, I've struggled a lot, I've failed a lot as a believer, but my God is faithful, he always lifts me back up, and man, it's just amazing when he reveals to you why, and you have that aha moment, yeah, and you're like, oh man, he's had it figured out, and that just causes more confidence in him, in my belief. Yeah, I am I am way more confident in his abilities now as a as a person who's been a Christian for 28 years than maybe like the first year I was a believer or man. My I'm like, I know he's got this. I wake up every day, okay, Lord, I may not like what happens today, but I know you got it, right? You got it, Lord.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's like when you're you're training to run, right? Yeah, you got to run the first time. You run a mile and you think, I thought I was gonna die.
SPEAKER_02I thought I was gonna die.
SPEAKER_00Right? After a while, though, that mile becomes easy, and then all of a sudden you reach two miles. Yes. You're training your brain to realize, hey, I can do this. And I think faith is the same way sometimes. Yes. But we have to train our mind like through things and and risk, what we call risk, you know what I mean? By putting ourselves out there and have faith and trusting him and seeing, hey, this this didn't go the way I thought it was going to, but by hindsight, I can see how he took care of me. And the more you do that, the more faith you experience. I don't know if that's the right way to say it, but the more times you put your trust in him and and let him guide and lead, pretty soon it grows.
SPEAKER_02Amen. No, amen. That's that's well put, brother.
SPEAKER_00That's why they say uh, you know, he's entrusted with little and is faithful will be entrusted with much. Amen. Because you gotta start somewhere small.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And hey, hey, I gave you I gave you 20 bucks, you you took care of it.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Now I'm gonna give you 50 bucks. Yes. And it again, I don't think I'm not saying it doesn't happen where you can get saved and all of a sudden you're like you know, like a mature Christian, I think you have to go through steps, and I think making mistakes and and learning and and experiencing that is is how to get there.
SPEAKER_02Well, I I think the scriptures are clear that even though that salvation, because we have Jesus, we're given everything we need for life and godliness, and that's in 2 Peter, I believe. Um, there is still a thing called growth, right? We are growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Jesus Christ. And one of my last sermons that I was able to preach um at my church, one of the encouragements I gave to the the congregation was as yes, my church lets me preach once in a while, was look, uh God is more patient with you in the growing than you are. So have some grace and mercy on yourself. If you're struggling right now, give yourself some grace and mercy. Why? Because he's given it to you, right? It's not always easy, right? Uh the circumstances we go through, right? But I know this, I'm 100% convinced of this. My life is a million, it's not even measurable, but I'll just say a million times better having Jesus in it than not. And um, I know that no matter what, like I said, and I'm gonna keep going back to this, he's always there because that's the gospel message, right? Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you. And in the Great Commission, uh, I will be with you to the very end of the age. Right? So um he's there, he's helping. And I'm wearing the bracelet too today. It's been a source of encouragement for me. I appreciate you guys.
SPEAKER_00So I was thinking while you're talking about that too. I heard a sermon. Uh now I wish I wish I came up with a sermon, but he was talking about when Peter got out of the boat. Jesus walking on water. Peter gets out of the boat, he starts to walk, and he looks around and he freaks out because of his circumstances. Yes. And Jesus says to him, Oh, ye of little faith. And I always thought, yeah, little faith, the dude got out of the boat, man. What I learned uh from this preacher was he wasn't talking about his like the amount of faith he has. He was talking about his breath.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I think a lot of times because uh life happens that our bre our our ye our faith, like we have real strong faith for like two days. Yes. But then we get scared. Yes. And God wants us to have wants it to carry through. And that's exactly what you're talking about. Learning. So now you're at the point where you're like, hey, today could suck royally, but I I know you well enough that you're gonna you're gonna carry this on to completion.
SPEAKER_02Keep your eyes on Jesus. Yeah. Well, you know, when it comes to faith, right? Jesus said in one verse that if you have the faith of a mustard seed, which is was very, very, very, very small seed, right? Because it's not how big is your faith, but who is your faith in.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, that's a better way of saying it. No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_02I just wanted to bring that up because as soon as you said that, it reminded me of that. I heard a good preacher say that years and years ago, and it's been something I've fallen back on many times. It's who is your faith in, right? Because your faith can be in yourself, your faith can be in your job, right? Your faith can be in whatever. But the point is when your faith is in Christ, even if it's small, it's gonna make a monumental impact. Yeah, so and my life is a living testimony of that. That that faith in Christ has impact. And and and I'm just so thankful that he saved me.
SPEAKER_00So excuse me.
SPEAKER_02Sorry. No worries.
SPEAKER_00This cough is killing me.
SPEAKER_03You should go to the doctor.
SPEAKER_00I did, they gave me medicine. As you can see, I put my faith in Christ, not in medicine. I'm just kidding. Uh, we really are having a man. This I'm like getting you blessed. I'm like, I'm I don't want it to end because I want to get some more of these nuggets of truth, you know. And uh uh really appreciate your your heart. I like when I talk to you and I see you light up when you're talking about sharing the gospel and what God has done in your life. You're really excited about that, and it's cool to know that there's somebody out there. You you live in Elkart, right? We live over by Fort Wayne, yes. Geographically two different areas, but man, connected, you know, through through Christ, and that you know, we may not see you uh again for a while. Yeah, you know, I hope we stay in touch, I hope we have a relationship. Uh but the idea that somebody in in Elkart is is is throwing it down for the Lord, and and us, I I always find that really interesting, you know what I mean, as we meet people. Tyrell Lindsay, he's more um the inner city of Fort Wayne where his ministry takes place. Talamenta is kind of the same thing, yeah. And and then us, we're we're over here doing our thing, but we're all connected.
SPEAKER_02And and and amen. Jesus said something very powerful that I've always tried to focus on is uh all men will know you are my disciples if you love one another.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Not no not knowing it's not how much theology we know or anything. All men will know you are my disciples if you love one another. That's what I think us getting together is about. It's about the love of Christ and and just being able to uh get together and know because we're unified in Christ that this is what this is about. Right? And uh so again, I thank you guys for having me. This has been a huge blessing. I've been excited about this ever since you brought it to my attention. It was gonna happen. I've been praying about it. It's a blessing to meet you, sir. I mean, yeah. So well, I got a feeling I we're at we're definitely not done. I was gonna say I'm gonna continue.
SPEAKER_00This is a this is a start of a uh uh one of friendship, but also a we're brothers in Christ.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely. We gotta stay, we gotta stay connected.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it which is is is crazy. Again, we want to thank you so much for being part of this conversation today. Uh this this episode was a little different than than what we normally do, but still, I think just as important and and such a blessing um to hear you know how you struggled, you know, because there's a lot of people that can watch this and be like, yeah, that dude's got it together. Oh, that dude has a good wife and he has a a good job. He's got yes, but he still struggled and he still dealt with things. We all deal with things, and his joy doesn't come out of his wife, kids, job. It comes out of your knowledge of Jesus Christ, and that that your faith is in Jesus. Amen. Amen, brother. Thank you so much for that. And that's uh uh I think we're gonna wrap it up here. Uh Matt Carter, you got any anything you want to say?
SPEAKER_03No, I let you do all the talking.
SPEAKER_00When you asked him a question earlier, I was gonna go.
SPEAKER_03No. Actually, Randy, I do want to point some out how he said at the beginning of this, he was glad I'm still here. I'm here because I'm handcuffed to the chair. He hasn't let me out. That's why you're not showing my feet.
SPEAKER_00He's a prisoner for Jesus. Prisoner for Jesus. Anyway, we need to all right back to theology.
SPEAKER_03We try to have a good time here, too. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, thank you for joining us on Battleground Believers. Keith, I cannot thank you enough. I look forward to to seeing your ministry grow. We look forward to promoting your ministry and being a part of it any way we can. And uh again, um if you want to reach out, if you have you want to find out about his ministry more, email us at battlegroundbelievers at gmail.com. We will definitely get in contact with him as things come up. We're gonna make sure we promote those things going on, even though they're an Elkart. Uh, you know, especially if you come near our direction, we're really, really promote it. Um, but thank you so much for being part of the the the audience. Actually, we're here because of you guys.
SPEAKER_02Amen.
SPEAKER_00Um as we always praying for you.
SPEAKER_02Keep us lifted up in prayer too.
