Life, symbols, and the realm of the sacred
Forms of life have both everyday and transcendental aspects with the former aspects dominating the latter. Campbell believes we Moderns are out of touch with the spiritual dimension of our personalities and refers to the myths of the world to ilustrate his case. He recommends that we study other peoples myths in order to see the limitations of the myths that rule our lives. Commonalities in many myths from very distant cultures suggest that there are "elementary ideas" which are the sources of the transcendental ideas we encounter in myths.
