The Gut–Skin Connection: How Internal Health Shapes Your Complexion
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your skin is not just “acting up.” It might be reporting on what’s happening in your gut.
We sit down with Marissa Parchman from Timeless Skin & Wellness to unpack the gut-skin connection in plain language, from everyday bloating and chronic acne to more intense inflammatory patterns that can resemble eczema and psoriasis. We talk about why skin can behave like a detox organ, how gut inflammation can show up on your face before you feel sick, and why treating symptoms only on the surface often leads to a frustrating loop of products, medications, and mixed results. If you care about anti-aging, longevity, and real wellness, this conversation brings the focus back to root causes.
We also get practical about the gut microbiome. Marissa shares what “supporting your microbiome” can actually look like, including daily fermented foods, how to spot the difference between true fermentation and vinegar-heavy imposters, and why consistency beats perfection. You’ll hear how she makes it simple at home with options her family will eat, plus why “taking things out” can be more powerful than constantly adding new supplements.
Then we go deeper into education and toxic overload: seed oils, ultra-processed “free-from” substitutes, fragrances, candles, and the constant chemical inputs that can keep your system inflamed. Marissa closes with a clear food framework to start today: reduce processed oils, processed sugar, and white flour, and move back toward whole foods your body recognizes.
If this helps you rethink your skincare and your plate, subscribe for more, share this with a friend who’s stuck in the breakout cycle, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What’s one change you’re willing to try this week?

Why Skin Problems Start In Gut
SPEAKER_02If your skin is sending SOS signals, the real issue might be happening deep in your gut. Let's uncover the inside out connection. I'm Julie Schwenzer, co-host and producer with Marissa Parchman, the founder of Timeless Skin and Wellness. It's great to chat with you again, Marissa. Hi, Julie. Yes, it's so good to see you as always. Yes. Well, we always love learning from you. So if we could jump in, what's the connection between gut health and skin quality?
SPEAKER_01Yes, what a great question. So it literally is everything. Everything starts in our gut. And when we start to understand that things on our skin, skin conditions, acne, mild breakouts, um, even like histamine reactions, you know, a mild rash on your skin because you touch something, our skin is a detox organ. And so when we start looking at all these things as signals, you know, our body is giving us a signal that's coming out in our skin. And everything starts in the gut. To think that the things you are ingesting and what's going on in your gut is not correlated to everything else in your system is a mindset that we have to shift. Um, and it shouldn't be so complicated. You know, it really should be taking it back to the basics and helping people understand that if you are bloated, there's a huge correlation between chronic acne and being bloated. A lot of people know they have gut issues and they're just ignoring them, or a lot of people think they're doing everything to fix them and they are just lost and they're led down this path of medications, which again disrupts your gut and causes more issues with your skin. So it's just as simple as that. If you have skin conditions of any sort, any kind, any chronic skin condition, the first thing you need to do is look at the gut, see what's going on, how you can improve what you're putting in your system and how you can supplement to heal the gut.
Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis As Signals
SPEAKER_02And when it comes to the skin issues, like what is one of the most common things that happens when there's like some pretty intense gut inflammation?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I see a very wide range of skin conditions, and it's very interesting because people come to me and they want to look better. And it's a conversation that I've had to dial back and start to educate them on their health because toxic overload is often showing in the skin in acne. And that's what I'm seeing the most of. So acne, mild or severe, it's your body telling you something. And then on a more severe level, you're gonna see psoriasis, eczema, skin conditions like that that are sometimes very severe at a very, very young age. And there are studies that show that it is correlated with gut dysbiosis, H. bylori in the gut. And again, a lot of people know they have gut issues and they just are lost and don't know how to fix it.
Microbiome Support With Fermented Foods
SPEAKER_02And then what about microbiome? Like how does that factor into what you do?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the gut microbiome, again, a healthy microbiome, the entire system in the gut is going to help your entire body thrive. So just like just like I mentioned, having a healthy gut, but what does that mean? It means figuring out what your triggers are and supporting your gut microbiome. And one of the basic things we can do is increase our fermented food intake on a daily basis. A lot of people think they're eating fermented foods, but they're buying things from the grocery store that often have vinegars and things that really do not equal a real fermented recipe. So I make sure to incorporate Greek yogurt, true fermented foods I order from a company called Olive My Pickle. They specialize in true fermentation and they have so many great, amazing options. We're actually on a subscription. So incorporating these foods, finding easier ways to do it, like having a subscription of something that you really enjoy and something that your family will eat. Um, I know for kids sometimes that can be a challenge, but my stepdaughter will eat pickled veggies, all sorts of different flavored pickles. She loves pickled foods. So that's an easy out for us, you know. We don't have to convince her to eat these healthy foods. We're giving her things that are going to support her gut microbiome on a daily basis and just putting it with all of her meals. So making it simple, not complicating things. That's
Remove Disruptors Before Adding Supplements
SPEAKER_01the biggest thing. How do you support support the gut microbiome? It's often by taking a lot of things out. We're so used to putting things in. What can we put in to fix our system? But often you need to take all the disruptors out of the system, add things like daily consumption of fermented food, probiotics, and let your body heal itself.
SPEAKER_02And I really like that you practice what you preach. Like you really do these things in in life and have seen changes like you've been very kind to share with us your personal stories. What have you seen that made um the most significant changes for you when you changed something certain in your lifestyle, whether it was um diet or routine or meditation, whatever it was?
Marissa’s Wake Up Call On Seed Oils
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I was your typical individual that was struggling with a lot of chronic issues, and I was told that they weren't correlated. And looking back, I had dental work done at a very young age, and that's the first sign is skin issues or dental issues at a very, very young age. And these are ignored, and we're told that we have to go to this doctor, we have to go to an eye doctor, and we have to go to a dentist, and we have to go to this doctor for this and that doctor for that. And we don't look at the system as a whole. So personally, I was on different medications from different doctors, and I was led down this path and still so confused. Like, why didn't anybody ever tell me to look at the ingredients in my food? And sometimes it seems like it's not such an important topic of conversation, but that's because people don't understand what they're doing to their bodies willingly. And personally, I had seen a naturopath that I had given several thousand dollars, done all this testing, and he told me I was allergic to gluten, dairy, corn, soy, asparagus, walnuts. There were a few other things, but those were all the things that I couldn't eat. And I was like, oh my God, he's cracked the code. I'm allergic to all of these things. Like, oh my gosh, I'm gonna go and heal my system. What happened when I started to eliminate gluten, dairy, corn, and soy? I started to look at the label on the front of food and products, and it said gluten-free, dairy-free. Fast forward, a woman was in my house one day and she was like, Oh my God, you're poisoning yourself with all this food. And I was like, How rude. Like, I barely knew this girl. I'd met her several times. She was in my house. I had some women over. We were like having a bottle of wine, and there was food sitting on the counter, like packaged crackers, and you know, who knows what was sitting there. And when she said this, I was like kind of offended, but I was like, what is she talking about? And she was like, you need to educate yourself on seed oils and stop eating seed oils. And that was kind of my first introduction to this world of hydrogenation and other processes that our oils go through before they get to our table. And also realized how many contaminants are in the food. Seed oils alone. I tell people start with the oils first because it's really hard. It takes a really hard time to completely change the way that you eat and the way that you were raised to eat. And for me, everything was being substituted. All of my protein was fake protein, all of my bread was fake bread, gluten-free bread. And I'm not saying that all gluten-free is bad. I'm not saying it's bad to be gluten-free. Specifically in my case, I wasn't eating quality gluten-free substitutes and ingredients. And so when I started to understand what was in my food, and I had been led on this path of no answers for so many years by several different doctors, dermatologists, and naturopaths that I had given so much of my money to, I finally was like, okay, I'm gonna educate myself on what's going on in the US food system and what's happening to the ingredients in my food before it's getting to my table. And when I did that to answer your question, that is the biggest, biggest eye-opening experience of my life. And I realized that all of my food was full of chemicals and that I was, I was fully poisoning myself with everything I was eating. And I didn't have all these different issues that needed to be seen by different doctors. I didn't need to be going to the dentist and then going to the naturopath and then going to the eye doctor and then going to the GI doctor. And then, you know, I needed to educate myself on my body as a whole, and all I was suffering from was full toxic overload, constant toxic overload and exposing my body to chemicals on the outside, chemicals on the inside, from fragrances, candles to shampoos, conditioners, to lotions I was putting on my body to toxic fragrances I was spraying on myself on a daily basis. Then you add in all the food, everything I was doing was wreaking havoc on my system. And some people say, well, everything is so toxic. And I'm like, it is, it is. And the systems are against us. And so the education, one step at a time, and when it finally clicks in your brain, I feel like that's what happens. It finally clicks, and you're like, Holy shit, do I want to drink this delicious Starbucks is a great example? It's purple, and now they have the green and purple and white frothy, and it's so pretty. And yeah, maybe I do want to drink it sometimes. But if I were to ever drink a drink like that, which I wouldn't, I would probably go to the healthier ice cream shop and have three scoops of ice cream before I would get a drink like that at Starbucks. But my point is, is the education, you know, I'm not saying ignore
Toxic Overload From Food And Fragrance
SPEAKER_01chemicals for the rest of your life, but understand if you light a toxic candle, a Yankee candle, you are ingesting a lot of chemicals that your body's gonna have to detox from. So what happens if you light that Yankee candle every single day, morning and night, all the time? Same things, same thing with the chemicals in our food, but complete different example. It's all around us, and we're just exposed to things that we were not meant to be exposed to on such a mass level, and it's criminal is what it is, Julie. It's criminal.
SPEAKER_02Well, though, thank you. I mean, I love how you break everything down so clearly. I did want to ask you, we only have like a minute here left, but um, and I I'm sorry that's not that much time, but can you share an example of how you incorporated um treating the gut at uh you know for one of your clients, or you could see that there was something they needed to change and you helped see them through that and it you saw a you know a quick response to it, an improvement.
The Three Ingredients To Quit
SPEAKER_01Um I actually have a full system and I'm currently working on a program that will be a little more easily digestible with all of the information that I have to share. Um, but this is the real start and topic that I always start with. And I'm not a doctor that's trying to heal people of, you know, cancer and things that are out of my realm. What I preach is it doesn't matter what you're going through, the education piece is so important. And what we have to do is stop consuming the three things on a daily basis that are just that have really taken over our food system and are inflammatory. So to take it back to the basics, they're inflammatory in everybody's system. Why? Because they are not whole foods. We have taken the whole food, we have altered its form. Now, us, a human that is meant to consume whole foods is consuming something that is more chemically based than whole food based. There are more chemicals in half of the things we're eating than there are actual foods. So three things processed oils, processed sugar, and processed oils, processed sugar, and white flour. Those are the three things that we really should not be eating on a regular basis. You know, everybody loves a piece of Costco pizza, but we have to know that is not a whole food meal. As if you were to make a sourdough pizza at your home with organic cheese and organic tomato sauce, that truly can be a nourishing meal for your family.
SPEAKER_02But um, we
