The aesthetics industry is getting bigger, faster, and noisier and that makes one question more urgent: how do you know a med spa is truly safe? Julie Schwenzer sits down with Marissa Parchman, founder of Timeless Skin & Wellness, to talk about what separates high-level medical aesthetics from the rest. We get specific about injector safety, the difference training quality makes, and why a calm, methodical approach often beats the flashiest “new technique” on social media.
We also talk about why Colorado’s lenient rules can create uneven standards, and why Marissa chooses to anchor her practice in education, sterile technique, and FDA-approved protocols whenever possible. You’ll hear how partnering with Allergan shapes her approach to Botox and dermal fillers, why off-label treatments require extra discipline, and what responsible providers do when a patient isn’t happy or a complication shows up.
Then we bring it back to what patients can feel in the room: clear explanations, a consultation that starts with questions, and a plan that prioritizes long-term outcomes. From IPL laser safety and test spots for higher-risk skin types to GLP-1 weight loss programs that include nutrition and behavior change, the takeaway is simple: the best results come from providers who teach, not providers who rush to sell. If you care about natural-looking results, safe injectables, and trustworthy med spa care in Denver, this conversation is for you.

In aesthetics, education and safety are not just buzzwords. They are the foundation of every
treatment. Today we explore what truly separates a high-level medical practice or spa from the rest and why education is the backbone of safe natural results. Welcome. I'm Julie Schwenzer with the awesome Marissa Parchman, founder of Timeless Skin and Wellness. Marissa, it's always great to have you.
SPEAKER_01
Yes. Hi, Julie. Thank you so much for the introduction, and it's always great to see you.
right in. What sets you apart from competitors when it comes to education?
SPEAKER_01
Oh, goodness, there are just so many competitors anymore. So I don't even know how to answer this question. Um we went from being one of six or seven medical spas in the Lohigh neighborhood in Denver 12 years ago and for several years after that, to now being one of 27 med spas was the last time we counted. And I think that is in a four-mile radius. So the industry is changing so, so drastically everywhere. But in the state of Colorado is what I know about the most. And the laws are so lenient. And on one hand, it can be a great thing for entrepreneurs, but on the other hand, it causes some problems. And it's really important to make sure that we are coming together as practitioners, as a practitioner community, because sometimes it's really hard to find the laws in black and white. And when it comes to safety, I think that is per practitioner. Um, I am always looking for better ways to serve my patients and better ways to keep my patients safe. And there's so much noise in the industry. And personally, I am a solo injector. I work with a lot of practitioners below me, but I don't work with any practitioners above me. And that's been really challenging. Over the last few years, being an injector, I have had to seek out my own trainings. And a lot of those trainings are very, very expensive. And some of the trainings that I have paid a lot of money for are trainings that I walked out feeling very confused and overstimulated. And some of the trainings I've gotten for free have been the best trainings of my life. So,
how do I set myself apart? I have partnered with Allergan when it comes to injections specifically. And they have Allergan as a company has done more studies on injectables than any other company. They put more money into training than any other company. So, again, as a new solo injector, I had company, I had accounts with some companies who are less expensive. And, you know, you might go where it's less expensive because as a new injector, you don't have a ton of money to throw into product. And what I learned is the companies that might be more expensive, the companies that are much larger, Allergan in particular, is going to give a level of training that you just don't get from a lot of other companies. So for me, it's very important to follow FDA approvals, make sure that I am doing treatments that are safe for everybody and have been proven to be safe for everybody. We do a lot of off-label treatments in my clinic, meaning a product might be like Botox. Botox is FDA approved for certain things. FDA Botox is not FDA approved for Botox in the shoulders, for 10 shoulders, 10 neck muscles. But sometimes we're injecting that area. So you can do off-label treatments. You can do treatments with products if they're not necessarily FDA approved for that area, but there's a lot of noise and it's getting out of control in the industry. And there are a lot of things being done that are not safe. And 90% of the treatments that I'm doing on my patients are the FDA-approved dose and FDA-approved pattern per Allergan. Allergan is a company that has really changed the way that I practice in my clinic. And lasers can also be very, very dangerous. However, I've been doing laser treatments for a very long time. There are very straightforward protocols for lasers where injectables are a little bit different. So when I think of safety in general, I'm always thinking of being an injector and how to make sure you're making how to make sure that you're not putting your patient in a situation that could lead to a problem. And I've been in trainings that blow my mind where nurses and doctors and other people are doing things that are so beyond my comprehension. I've seen doctors touch clients' patients' faces without gloves on. I've seen nurses drop needles and pick them up and try to use them. It's crazy. I guess there's a level of comfortability that I see with some practitioners that I don't see with others. And I'm a very patient and curious learner. And trainers have pointed that out to me before that I have a very steady hand, that I work very slowly, which is a really good thing. And I also am not afraid of construct construction. And I'm not afraid to look at a situation and say, wow, maybe I didn't make the best evaluation in, you know, the consultation. And now we have to pivot and do something different. So I think what really sets me apart is my willingness to learn and make sure that we're just always following the FDA approved protocol.
SPEAKER_02
You know, I was curious too, in addition to your training with Allergan, and obviously you're so experienced
with that company, what ongoing education or certifications do you prioritize for yourself and your team?
SPEAKER_01
Yeah, that's a really good question. Um, the most accessible trainings are trainings that come from the companies that you can get on a webinar and watch, which is so amazing in this world that we live in. Um I try not to get on too many webinars that are free because there is so much noise in the industry. I really do stay close to the companies that I work with and really try to take the time and energy to sit on all the trainings. And even if it's something that I already know a lot about, it might be a training that I a trainer that I've never worked with. And I want to see what that trainer has to say because it is a forever-changing industry. And another thing is every single patient is different. So I might sit on a training, a new, a brand new introductory injector training and have a trainer and a face with an anatomy that I've never worked with or never experienced that type of consultation. So it's very important to not get a big head and not say, oh, well, I've already done a training like that. Like I want to do every training. I want to hear every single person talk about everything. However, I have realized where to access the best information. And for me, my opinion is with Allergan. And I stand really strong to that because of the training that they have given me. It's just, it's on a different level of personal touch and wanting small providers to have the education that they're not getting in the industry. Um, they've sent me to a lot of trainings. They put several million dollars into their training program this year, something that they didn't have prior. Um, and they opened a training center in California that anybody that has an account with Alorgan now has access to go to this training center. Um, I can't wait to go. It'll probably be this year or next year that I go, but they have a whole training center. You can go to cadaver labs, you can go and sit into sit and listen to injectors that have been injecting for 20, 30 years. So I have closed accounts with a lot of companies because I wasn't getting any training from them. You know, maybe I wasn't spending enough money with them. And that's another thing is you really do get the attention of the money that you put in, you know, you spend a ton of money with a company, they're gonna give you a lot of attention. But us little guys, in comparison to these big companies, we're not spending any money. So Allergan really has shown me that they care about me as a small single provider. And I mean, if I had an emergency, I have several people I could pick up the phone and call. And the fact of the matter in the industry is emergencies do arise and you need to have a community to make sure that you're addressing it the right way. Um, Allergan will only take on complications with their filler, they will take on complications with any filler anywhere. If anybody calls Allargan with a serious problem with an injectable, they will take it on as a case and help you and make sure that everything is okay. Because if you go to a hospital with some of the concerns you can get with injections, they're not going to know how to handle it. And that can be very detrimental to a patient. So the course of action, if there is a problem, is the patient comes back into the clinic and you get the appropriate people involved. So allergen is just really amazing when it comes to safety and efficacy and just making sure that we're using things that work, things that are consistent. If something doesn't work and a patient isn't happy, we don't send them away. We figure it out, we make sure that they're not investing an amount of money that doesn't make sense without a visible result that is expected and is almost promised to them in the consultation. You know, everybody responds differently to treatments, but I've been doing this for so long. I can look at somebody and say, if you follow this plan and do X, Y, and Z, you will be happy. And in the rare case that that doesn't happen, Allergan is there to help us fix it.
SPEAKER_02
And, you know, I can tell from our recent episodes, and I've been so happy to interview you that you're really great at also passing on your education to your patients because you're a good teacher. Absolutely. Um, how do you think that contributes to like safer outcomes for the patients because they are well aware of what's going on and what's going into their body and things like that?
You know, education isn't something that I ever had to practice communicating with people. It's part of my job as a practitioner. I don't want anybody to be confused about what they're doing or why they're being turned down for something. And I see this pattern in the industry of people coming in for a consultation and me telling them, oh, well, you can't do this treatment. And they tell me that they did the treatment elsewhere. Um, IPL is a really good example for that. It's a laser. And somebody with darker skin, it's just it's not the safest treatment. And I think we've talked about this before. Um and I just treat a certain way. I very much treat to make sure everybody is safe. And in a case that I'm gonna push the limits just a little bit, we're doing test zaps of the laser. You know, we're making sure that we do three zaps behind the ear and we'll call you in 72 hours and see how that responds. So there's definitely ways to make sure that you're being extra cautious. And there's just rules that I've implemented, small rules that I've implemented, certain ethnicities. I don't care how light your skin looks today. We're gonna do that test zap because you might have darker melanin that comes out when you go into the sun that we don't see. So I think it's uh often about following the rules and not getting a big head and thinking, oh, well, I'm I know better. I I can do it, I know that it can do it. It's there's still certain rules that need to be followed. And patients come in to me all the time and they'll tell me I'm confused. I went and got a $10,000 consultation and I didn't really understand and I was confused, or I want I needed to get filler dissolved. That's another one. Well, why does this filler need to be dissolved? Somebody else told me that. And I'm like, what do you mean somebody told you your filler needed to be dissolved, but they didn't explain why? So it's just, it's it's common sense to me. When you're selling a service, when you're selling a product, you lead with education. You ask the client 20 questions and then you present to them a treatment plan. You present to them what you, your analysis of their skin, of their body, whatever you're whatever you're selling. Um, GLP1s is another good example. We do a lot of weight loss in my clinic. And so many patients come to us because they are just being sold a GLP one and they're maybe losing weight too drastically, or they don't feel well, or they're not changing their diet and they're still eating a very highly processed diet. That's because they haven't been educated on what's going on in their body. And it just creates such a problem in the industry when so many providers are leading with the sale and not leading with the transformation. And the transformation includes education.
