Good night, knights.
SPEAKER_03Good day, owl fans. That was so bad.
SPEAKER_01That was British.
SPEAKER_03I cannot do Australia and I'm I'm sorry. That's not my special.
SPEAKER_01It's okay. Welcome back to another episode of the Owl Pod. I'm your host, David Lidfin, alongside me, my beloved co-host.
SPEAKER_03Amelia Wright.
SPEAKER_01And you're right. Before we just say record, you said we haven't introduced ourselves in a while. I feel like that's true for some reason.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we like we've getting really creative with the intros, but then it's like, who are we?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And I think it's important to introduce ourselves because today we're unlocking a new continent.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh, exactly.
SPEAKER_01And we've made our way through the basically the entire world.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we're almost seven for seven.
SPEAKER_01What do we got? North America.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, obviously North America. That's like an easy one off the list.
SPEAKER_01We've got a couple Europeans on. I know we had Lucas.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_01Um, that's just the one that comes to mind immediately. Yeah. Uh that was in the fall, a couple a couple months ago.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We made our way through Asia a couple weeks ago with IU Spot.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_01We now are tapping into Australia with our special guest, Angus Tremlett. Right? No mispronunciation.
SPEAKER_00Angus Tremlett. You got it perfectly right.
SPEAKER_01It's good to be here. Good to have you on. And then, of course, you can't forget about Oklahoma, which is his own comment.
SPEAKER_03Yep, Oklahoma, we did that previously when we talked to crew Adam Kern.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a teammate of Angus's.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Before we get into our interview with Angus, which is why you probably clicked on this episode, we're gonna give you a little recap of what's been going on with Temple Athletics, starting with our tennis programs, which, if you remember last week, I believe they were women's tennis was our owl of the week.
SPEAKER_03Yep, I agree.
SPEAKER_01Let's start on the weekend with men's tennis last weekend, who fell to NJIT 6 to 1. NJIT is sneaky good at tennis. I don't when I hear NJIT, tennis doesn't usually just like come into my mind. But doing some research, they've got quite the impressive program. So wasn't the result we wanted, but then we came back on Monday and beat up on bison beat up on bison, beat up on the Howard Bison 5-2, and then did the same thing to LIU on Wednesday.
SPEAKER_03A lot of tennis this week.
SPEAKER_01And then just before we recorded this podcast, we got breaking news that we defeated Fairley Dickinson University at home. At home on senior night. Day? Senior day. Four to one. So men's tennis, after a tough weekend, came back three matches in a row, three wins. That's good for them as they head into their conference play. I believe their tournament starts next weekend. It does. Women's tennis had a choir week. They picked up a win today as well against Fairley Dickinson four to three on senior day. They won.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01You weren't listening to Ayush Bao.
SPEAKER_03I was. I thought he did not say that.
SPEAKER_01He said they won 4-3.
SPEAKER_03Okay, good to know, good to know.
SPEAKER_01If they lost, I apologize, but now I'm now you're like tripping me out, but I'm pretty sure they did win.
SPEAKER_03It's okay, just keep it. We've been wrong a lot, and people know that. So it's like we try our best.
SPEAKER_01And the day you're listening to this podcast, they'll be taking on the Drexel Dragons before their conference play, which will begin at the same time next week. We hate their conference, their conference is down in uh looks like in Texas. Oh, I thought it was in Tulsa. I'm all over the place.
SPEAKER_03We're wrong about everything, so it's okay.
SPEAKER_01That's alright. Let's move on. Uh let's talk Temple of Cross. Let's get right into it, Amelia. You guys had a big weekend taking on Old Dominion, which was a common theme this past week, if you remember. A lot of Old Dominion uh versus the Owls.
SPEAKER_03A lot, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And a lot of a lot of wins for the Owls if I'm reading these scores correctly. Looks like you guys uh pulled out a nice home win 17 to 7. Probably felt good.
SPEAKER_03Yes, it was it was good. It was a nice win, yeah. Yeah, and it keeps us in the running for the conference tournament, so now we just gotta win out and we can hopefully be third or fourth seed.
SPEAKER_01Any uh shout outs, any teammates stood out to you with their stellar play?
SPEAKER_03Um Lexi Colt probably was on the top of the stats list per usual. I think she had four goals and one or two assists.
SPEAKER_01Looks like my co-host here also had four goals.
SPEAKER_03I tried my best, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Does that bring your total to 105 career goals? Uh not exactly counting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't really know. It might be one of four. I'm not sure. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, anyway, it looks like you and Lexi had quite the day around the net. Also, Sabrina Martin added to Brooke Mazier.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm. Yep, freshman Brook Mazier.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say, is that a freshman?
SPEAKER_03Doing great stuff for us on both sides of the field, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Awesome.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, so good. Like like you said, you guys have to pick up another win this upcoming weekend.
SPEAKER_03You guys are taking on Vanderbilt at home on Saturday for senior day. And yeah, we just gotta win out. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Next two weeks. Do or die. Well, good luck this weekend. Yeah, Bandy's coming to town. They're they're a tough matchup.
SPEAKER_03Oh, wait, senior day and grad appreciation game, because obviously I'm not a senior.
SPEAKER_01Do you get so is this like your second my second senior day?
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_01They call it grad appreciation day.
SPEAKER_03No, I'm I'm calling it that.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03Because I just want to be like special.
SPEAKER_01Gotcha. Let's move on. Let's go to uh women's rowing, who also defeated the monarchs. A clean sweep, I'm reading. Uh they won all eight races they took part in. I mean I don't know what else is more to say. Feels like they just went down to Virginia and dominated.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Love that for them. Um believe they're competing this upcoming weekend at the Connect Cup, which is in New Jersey, uh, which starts on Saturday and is gonna be on the Cooper River. So hopefully they continue. They've had a really solid start to their season. Remember they're in that new conference.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Hopefully they can continue to pick up some wins, but good result for them this past weekend, eight for eight. I mean, I don't care who you're going against, it doesn't get much better than that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Let's talk men's crew now, and this is where we'll bring in our guest Angus to talk because their top boat, which Angus is a part of, okay, traveled across the country to the University of California.
SPEAKER_03Oh, only one boat traveled.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so we only had one boat go out. We went over to Redwood Shores over in San Francisco, um, which was pretty awesome, you know. Get out of the weather here in Philly, get a bit of sun. Was it warm over there? It was warm, it was warm, but um, yeah, it was awesome to go and do that, go and see the other side of the country. So, yeah, we sent we sent our 1v over to go and race. It was the California invite, so you know the University of California Berkeley invited, you know, a bunch of teams out to come and race them. Um, and so we borrowed one of Cal's boats and went down the course with it, and it was it was awesome. Last week I'm trying to think if this was on the air last week or not.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't know if it was on the air, but me and David had an argument on if you guys were gonna drive the boats, or I said you were just borrowing them, and just want everyone to know Amelia Wright was right.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think you were partially right, but I was definitely fans or butts always. I was definitely right in the fact that like this was an unusual occurrence, correct?
SPEAKER_00It was, but when you're on the other side of the country, it makes it a little bit hard to drive your boats because you know it's like I think um one of my coaches saying it'd be like a three-day drive because you gotta bring all the boats, and it's a bit of an effort to bring one boat on these massive trailers, so we thought it was a better option just to borrow them. Um and Cal's got some pretty awesome equipment. What's that like, like getting in someone else's boat? Is that like a weird feeling? It is a weird feeling. So rowing boats are all kind of made to a certain weight class, so all the boats, because they're made in like uh like European ones, um, they're all in kilograms, which is awesome for me, but I guess you guys don't like that. No. Um so the boat that we have here is a um meant for people that are a lot lighter, so it was a bit more of a heavier shell, but we still got it done and it still worked well for us, so we were happy. Did you get like a you get a practice round on that? Yeah, we got uh we call them like a swing row, so we got a swing row on it in it on what Friday, and then got the racing in on Saturday against UCSD, which was good. We got the win over them. Um and then that afternoon we had a race against Cal, and Cal's like the second fastest boat in the country, and I'm pretty sure there's like four or five Olympians in that boat. Jeez. Didn't know that. So, you know, we kind of took that race as we did, and we said, you know, let's just race them to the thousand because it's a 2,000 metre race. And so we raced them all the way to the thousand and held them until about you know 800 metres and then off they went. Um and into the distance. Said goodbye to them. But through 1K, you guys were right there. Through 1k, we were right there on it. Um yeah, it's it was yeah, pretty awesome, you know. You know, it's not every day you get to line up against people that have competed for their countries at the Olympics and stuff like that. That's pretty that's pretty cool. So it is it was pretty awesome to do that, I will say. Um and then went back to the hotel, had a good night's sleep, and woke up and raced Wisco that morning, who is probably like one of the more comparable Wisconsin, yeah. Yeah. Um the badges. Um didn't know there was water in the city. You never heard about that that abbreviation of Wisco.
SPEAKER_03No, I have, but like I'm like, it kind of brings me back to Oklahoma. Like, there's water in these plates places.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think you might need a reality check on where Wiscounted is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think it's a good idea. I don't know how much road in the end. They they do a lot of training on land, those boys. Um but they uh they ended up getting the win over us, which was a little bit annoying, but um that happens, so you know, just count your losses on the water. That was a close race, though. That was a close race. We had them pretty well, I don't know, to the 1400 mark, and then we had a bit of a problem in the boat and um ended up getting away from us. One of the boys ended up accidentally catching a crab, which is where you lose control of your blade. And so that slowed us down by a little bit. Catching a crab, you should. Catching a crab. Wow. That's a great crab. I feel like we're gonna have a number of these phrases.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've already heard a couple of that. Definitely gonna be like I thought you said cramp episode. I think our audience will appreciate this as well. Like some of the new phrases that are gonna be heard today.
SPEAKER_03I'm also glad we just wrote it.
SPEAKER_01Is that like a rowing specific term?
SPEAKER_00Or is that that's a rowing specific term. So you can't apply that other way.
SPEAKER_03Wait, so what happened? You just like lost.
SPEAKER_00So what happens is like, because you're you're moving up and down the boat pretty fast, and you've got to kind of want to stay in time. And so sometimes when the boat gets a little bit off balance, you kind of tend to lose control of your blade a little bit and you can let it go. And the blade can get caught on a bit of water and it can get kind of sucked out from under you, and the blade will come back and kind of over your head a little bit, and then you've got to push it back and out and go again. So um we did that. We ended up going down by seven seconds, which we probably could have had a pretty made it a little bit tighter, but it's no one's fault, and that's what happens in rowing, and you know, you just gotta learn from it, and we'll get them next time.
SPEAKER_01This is why we bring people on. Like you never get to learning so much. You can look at you know the time, the score sheet, but if you don't actually know what went on, there's no explanation.
SPEAKER_03You wouldn't have known that there was a crab in the boat.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so any any like I know obviously you guys were busy out there, you weren't, it wasn't a vacation by any means. Do you guys do anything like outside of rowing as a team that was fun? I know like you take these trips, yeah, especially on the west coast, any any like notable things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely. So we ended up going um after we finished our racing, we went out to a um, I don't know what you call it. It's like a national park sort of thing. Oh yeah, yeah. Um we went to Mere Woods. Oh, yeah, yeah. And that was awesome. It's probably beautiful. National Monument, I think you might call it. Something like that. National Park, I think. Yeah, something like that. Anyway, went out there, and that was unreal. So that's where all like the big redwood trees are in California. That's cool. And so that was like pretty awesome. You know, these trees are absolutely massive, and just like, yeah, so that was awesome. And then we were lucky enough to go and look at the Golden Gate Bridge. So that was another cool one we did, and then that was kind of it, you know. As you said, it was a bit more of a business trip. Kind of go there, get some racing in. Did you come back on Sunday, Dan? Yeah, uh, I came back Monday morning, got the red eye out at 11:50, landed at 8 a.m. and straight into the 10 o'clock classes. You had class that day? Wow. Did have classes that day. So you went. I did go.
SPEAKER_01But the stupidest student athlete. Anyone was wondering, you know, student athletes nowadays getting paid, and I know maybe not anyone in this room. Uh you know, they're still going to class, 10 a.m. off of red eye. Yeah. Good to hear. I'm sure the Al faith will appreciate that.
SPEAKER_03If any resnik people are listening, they'll appreciate that.
SPEAKER_01We'll definitely appreciate that. Shout out to you guys. Um let's talk about this upcoming weekend. You guys are gonna be on the Cooper River as well. Yep, sure.
SPEAKER_00Sure, uh same as the women's team. Um be good racing out there. That's where our kind of conference championship is, is the Dadvals. That's later on in the later on in the year.
SPEAKER_01It'll bring that to the Schuylkill, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So it used to be on the Scookel, but because the Scookel's got what we call like a dog leg in it, so it's got its little turn in it. It kind of doesn't make for the best racing, and also because the school has like an island in the middle and stuff, it kind of affects the flow a bit. Um so if we were to race on the Scooker, you've got to start on like a bit of a staggered start sort of thing. So the Cooper's just straight, straight shot course, you can get it in, and it's a just you know, there's no excuses if you're listening.
SPEAKER_01I was at Nationals last year on the Cooper. Cooper River, like those who don't know, it's like 20 minutes. Not even yet.
SPEAKER_03I clearly know where nothing is.
SPEAKER_01Well, like these regattas are like pretty legit operators. I didn't realize before I went. They like have a nice, yeah, nice setup.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that one that you guys came out to was the IRAs, and that one was out at Coop the Cooper River, and that's like our national championship.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that one's always there's energy, there was some real like it's pretty awesome. Some real vibes there.
SPEAKER_00The IR the IRAs is pretty, pretty it's unreal.
SPEAKER_01I mean, Dadville's a huge deal. I remember when you guys won that last year, like my dad, who uh was in London at the time, like sent me uh an article from like the Philadelphia Inquirer, like Temple won the and I already had saw via social media, but like winning Dadville is a huge deal.
SPEAKER_00It was pretty awesome, especially last year. There was um we definitely wanted to get that win. Um, because you know that put us in a really good spot coming into IRAs and we all and when we were going on to Henley as well that year. So that was kind of our incentive. If we win Dad Vales, they're gonna send us on to Henley to road. So what's the like going in?
SPEAKER_01I'm sure now you know Dad Vale's a couple weeks out, like we're we're trying to defend that, obviously. Yeah. What's the mindset in the team right now? Like, how do how do we feel about Dad Vale? I know it's a couple weeks out, but that's what you guys are ultimately preparing for, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, pretty much that's what you know, that's the end goal. That's you know what we want to win. That's the race that you know gets us gets us where we want to be. So um everyone's pretty committed to it, and everyone, you know, is doing all they can to put their best foot forward in order to make that possible for us.
SPEAKER_01So um who are gonna be the teams to look out for in that competition?
SPEAKER_00It's funny. So last year um I was telling Dave earlier, is we only had two um kind of like tickets to go through the national championships. Where this year it's got four, so it's broadened a few more teams. I'm not really sure who's coming down yet, but there'll be a bit more competition this year, so it's probably time to um yeah, we'll have to go a bit harder and try and get the win. But I mean I think we still do it. So there'll be the usuals, there'll be Drexel, LaSalle, Um St. Joe's, you know, all the Philly kind of local schools, and then there's always a few randoms that end up coming in. Like there's you know, rumours of Colgate coming, there's rumours of Columbia coming. There's a few rumours. So we'll see, we'll see what actually happens. But it'll be exciting to get some new competition in there and yeah, see how we go. Yeah, I mean we gotta get out to Uregata one of these days.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I do need to. It's all right. I'm thinking, you know, either next weekend, I'm looking at the schedule. It looks like the 25th, you gotta meet uh the Bourbon Cup. Uh that looks like it's on the SCUKLE. That might be one that I I make my way over to.
SPEAKER_03Who's that hosted by?
SPEAKER_00Uh is it not like they normally they are kind of hosted. I'm not really sure who that's hosted by because obviously the SCOOC will we run on it, LaSalle rose on it, SJU rise on Andrexel or rub on it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So it's not I don't really know who that will be hosted by. Yeah, maybe that's one we check out.
SPEAKER_01It could be a good one. Um I like Regatta's good atmosphere. Yeah, they're good. Yeah, we got a bit of a hard one. They always got food one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I feel like when you went to one, you said like when you race, is it always 2,000 kilometers? So you can either see like the front of the room.
SPEAKER_002,000 kilometers.
SPEAKER_03How far is it?
SPEAKER_002,000 meters. 2,000 meters is 2 kilometers.
SPEAKER_03Dude, this metric system. No, no, that one's on you. I sound just so stupid.
SPEAKER_002,000 kilometers.
SPEAKER_03So you always race the same distance? Does it change remote? Like, I don't really know.
SPEAKER_00So everyone races the same, but changes with the season. So in the fall season, we'll race 5K races. And so they're like the big ones, like they're kind of like head of the child, like that's quite a big race that's in Boston that a few people might have heard of. Um and then yeah, in the spring season we race the shorter 2Ks, which are the more spring, which is like the Olympic distance sort of thing.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And how much time like does that usually take?
SPEAKER_00Like is it like so like we want to be aiming for like sub 555 kind of time. Sub yeah. Yeah, under that.
SPEAKER_01As a runner, like I know I know like how fast 2K is because we do a lot of our reps in Ks and we raise 5K, whatever. You know, under three minutes a kilometers moving.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think it's like it's like 440 miles. It's like you want to try and hold like under 130, uh a minute 30 per 500. It's fast.
SPEAKER_03You're saying a lot of numbers, so yeah, you guys should you guys should try and do that because then you'll win.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there you go. Well, it's good to get the update on the team. Uh-huh. Let's let's bring the conversation more towards you, Angus, because obviously we we got you here on the podcast. And we if you could never tell by you know good day. Yeah, good day. Uh coming all the way from Australia. You're a sophomore here now, so I'm guessing you know, last year, first time living in the States. Yep, first time living in the States. Talk to us about how you got familiar with Temple. I mean, we're always interested in this, but I feel like everyone's journey is so different. But also, like international students, one thing, but then Australia is like on the complete other side. Yeah, it's like you're so far away. You know, how did you get introduced to Temple and what kind of what kind of brought you here?
SPEAKER_00Uh it's definitely, yeah, so rowing in Australia is pretty big, you know, high school and stuff, so there's a lot of high schools that do it. Um but once you finish, there's no kind of like there is pathways, but there's no like real pathways to keep it competitive. So a lot of Australians, once they finish rowing, do end up coming over to the States. Um, and that's something that I really wanted to do, is kind of you know look at the options and stuff. And I wanted to go to a school, you know, strong rowing team, good academics and stuff, and that's kind of where Temple sort of happened. And you know, I really like the coaching staff and all that kind of stuff. I don't know, it just felt like a good fit. It just felt it just worked for me. I came on a visit. Um, I looked at a few schools around Philly. I looked at um at Drexel, I looked here, and then I looked at another school called Stetson in Florida, which is a bit of an interesting one. Um so I'm glad I didn't end up there. But a little bit warmer though, probably when I'm a little more.
SPEAKER_03Jasper's Stetson. Stetson Jasper's.
SPEAKER_01Great baseball programs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, right. But no, it's good. And I mean, you know, adjusting to Philly is definitely a big thing. Um super different to back home. Yeah. Um, you know, it's that big kind of city feeling. Right. Um, which not really like Sydney is like a big city, but it's set up very differently to here. So, you know, definitely threw me off a bit, but I've loved being here and stuff. The one complaint I probably have is the weather, but you know, yeah, it gets better.
SPEAKER_01I think everyone, I mean I'm a Philadelphian now, I feel like I still complain about it.
SPEAKER_00This year specifically, like this year and last year, I feel like this year was brutal.
SPEAKER_01This year was way worse worse than last year. Yeah. I gotta ask, talking about Philadelphia, did you I never I mean I feel like I've never asked this question on the podcast. Did you have like a welcome to Philadelphia moment? Was there a moment last year, maybe this year, where you were like, okay, I'm in I'm living in Philadelphia.
SPEAKER_00I think it was when the Eagles won. I think when the Eagles won, whatever. Well that's like a happy one moment. I feel like that was a real welcome to Philadelphia. That's like a religious experience on Philadelphia. That was true. Yeah, that was something that I was like, wow, this is this is pretty cool. But I mean, you've definitely got, you know, your subway the subway's a real welcome to Philadelphia. Yeah, it's fair. That's an easy one either. Like that's an easy gimme, I think.
SPEAKER_03I was like one, I was walking on the street once, like, I think I literally was living in Morgan North at this time, and I had stopped by fresh grocery on the way home from practice or something, and uh a woman literally just like knocks my groceries out of my hand, and I was like, and she just kept walking. Like there was no I didn't say anything to her, she didn't say anything to me. She was just like at you, got you, and I was like, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean, obviously, like coming from Sydney, I can imagine. I mean, just not even living in another country, but you said like Philadelphia is a big city, I'm not too familiar with Sydney. I'm guessing the there probably aren't many parallels between the two cities.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I wouldn't really I wouldn't say so. No, not not really. I mean, you know, we've got our our city, which we call it like the C B D, like central business district kind of area, and that's you know, all big sky risers and all that kind of stuff. Sure. Um but you know, the you kind of the thing that's funny about here, it's like the your suburbs, like what you guys kind of refer to as suburbs are a lot closer. Like it's like 20 minutes from the C B D. Like I live in like the suburbs, I guess you'd call it. And it's like I can get a bus into the city in like it take me 10 minutes, maybe. Oh wow. So like it's a bit that's it's a bit of a different setup. Um gotcha. But you know, it's cool. I mean it's really it's awesome, you know, how this is all going here. You know, I do quite like Philadelphia. I wasn't sure about it at the start, but I've definitely adjusted it. I've warmed up to it, definitely moving into my own house. Yeah, that's always changed my mind. That's always a big thing.
SPEAKER_01So was there on your visit, right? So this is unique because we've had international students. I remember we also talked to Francesco from Europe. Coming on a visit here, especially from Australia, like that's I feel like you're kind of unique in that way. When you said that, I was like, oh, okay, like you you kind of you did like uh a test of the area, so to say, whereas Francesco was on YouTube trying to figure out where the hell he was gonna be.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01When you came on a visit here, what made it clear that like you you wanted to come to Temple versus some of the other schools that you mentioned?
SPEAKER_00I think it was just like the team. I just really wanted to be a part of a team, like you know, rowing your training all day. Like it's it's a a lot of training, you know, you're with these guys a lot, you know, you're in the boat with them every day, you know, you're on the bus with them and all that stuff. So I kind of really just wanted a good group of guys to kind of hang out with, you know. And that was really kind of awesome for me. What I found here is when I came here, you know, it just felt it just you know kind of clicked for me. I was like, yeah, I'm pretty I can feel comfortable here and I can see myself doing this. So I think that was the main thing for me was kind of just like feeling comfortable in the environment. And yeah, that was kind of it.
SPEAKER_01I feel like that's like a more sustainable approach to to coming to a place. I feel like some people nowadays get sold on like facilities and campus life and all this stuff, and that that the there's no doubt that's important, but I feel like when you're when you're a student athlete somewhere, like the most important thing is your team because you're you're with them. far more than you are on campus or any class, any you know, social function. Like you I feel like your team can really make or break your experience. So I feel like that's better way of I mean I know some people go places because you know it's warm or they have a great campus. They have a great facility and and again those things can contribute. But um I like that point. Okay, I want to get into something that we talked about before the podcast and you're Amelia you look at me already like whoa whoa whoa I got to do it. There's something in this in their sport crew men's crew that they do after game or after races whatever you call it. Oh god that is completely unique to their sport. I think it's gonna blow your mind. I'm scared yeah I am after a competition versus another team obviously the winning team I should say this the losing team has to give their shirt to the winning team.
SPEAKER_00Yeah you don't wear shirts they have they bring shirts you bring an extra kind of shirt we call them out a betting shirt. It's a betting shirt.
SPEAKER_01Yeah and this is every race every race every spring race yeah every spring race so if you lose you gotta walk over to their team's little camp yeah you gotta find who is sitting in your position in the boat. Wow so if I'm in the front I gotta find whoever's in the front of the other boat and you gotta give them your temple shirt.
SPEAKER_03That is kind of crazy.
SPEAKER_00As a way of saying isn't it like a way like hey you beat us like you Yeah it's kind of like you know a way to show the respect it's a way to meet different people from like different teams and stuff and I think it started a long time I know I I thought I because I I forgot about this tradition but I remember I had a conversation with it might have been Demetrius last year might have it might have been Braden I don't know someone on your team talking about this and I was just blown away like it's like a it sounds like a very humbling experience.
SPEAKER_03It's like a jersey swap but worse.
SPEAKER_01It's like a it's like a a shame a shame swap. Yeah you see a jersey swap is like hey we used to play with each other in high school this is like no like you beat me and I gotta give up my shirt.
SPEAKER_03Wait but so how does it happen like when you went to Cal you said you played like not played one against four different teams like bring four bedding shirts.
SPEAKER_00You gotta bring shirts that we're easy you know so UCSD came and gave us their shirt and that was you know nice you made them you say hello and all that.
SPEAKER_03What do you do with these shirts you gonna make a blanket or something when you're done with college or you wear them?
SPEAKER_00That's what some people do I mean currently they're sitting in a bag in the basement um I mean I think it's I think it's a pretty cool idea.
SPEAKER_01Yeah it is also like every race I just like that has to be like part of the motivation to not lose is I don't want to give my shirt off oh for sure definitely it's definitely like that's a that's a prideful that's a prideful activity. I mean I I think that is some serious like I I've I live for this kind of information. What do you think about like after Lokarovsky like you got to go over to their team.
SPEAKER_03That would be crazy.
SPEAKER_01You gotta go over the team's attack and you gotta give away I don't think it would go well.
SPEAKER_03I mean it's different when it when it's like 14 yeah when it's like a contact sport I mean like there's certain girls after it's like I don't want to like see you again. Yeah like you were just beating me up like physically beating up my arms my arms are full of bruises like because of you and now I have to go give you a shirt I would be I'd be I think it's a fascinating concept. Yeah I don't know if you could do that in all sports.
SPEAKER_01Totally unique sport too and I I don't as far as I know I think that's you're probably the only sport that does that on and and how consistent after every single race yeah yeah it's really cool.
SPEAKER_03Do they give you like like you all give the same shirt?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So we all give the same shirt so like Coach Cunningham will just have like a box of shirts. Yeah. You know you want to end with the biggest box you want to keep all your shirts so um yeah it's it is an awesome thing that we do like it's super cool you know you go and meet all these different people. So um it is super cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah that's pretty awesome. Yeah I like that very good um a couple more things I'd like to touch on um I mentioned we had Francesco on a couple weeks ago and I was actually the reason I'm thinking about it is because I was just on a panel with him talking about global owls. Is that something that you've got into as an international student I know we have Global Isles which is a student athlete led organization that he's the president of right Francesco is the president of that and they bring together student athletes all the international student athletes is as a kind of a smaller community smaller but still pretty big I would say at Temple.
SPEAKER_00Yeah it's not bad at all is that something that you've gotten involved with a little bit I've gone to a few of those meetings and stuff you know they're always good to have you know familiar company around and people who are doing the same thing as you because you know you know everyone is kind of away from home but you know some of us are a bit further away than others but you know it's kind of a little you know it is nice to have a smaller community of people that kind of know what you're going through and kind of doing so yeah I Global House is a pretty awesome thing I definitely will say.
SPEAKER_01Yeah and you said that you're studying in Fox your business manager major as well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah what uh what are you looking to do kind of I know you're only a sophomore but any any like career paths or things you're looking forward to you know taking advantage of while you're in the city here um looking after college not really I really haven't put a lot of thought to it to be honest with you just yet I mean I'd love to get into something I mean I I know I definitely I will be going home for sure that's kind of something that I'm pretty set on you know it's where my life is where my mates are it's where my family is so um yeah it's that's kind of one thing that I kind of am pretty sure on um but you know it's awesome to come over here and do it and you know get the experiences over here and meet people over here um but yeah I really am I'm not too sure what I want to go into just yet just knows going back to land down under yeah that's the plan at least speaking of land down under should we pivot yeah I mean I feel like into best section this is where usually not section segment yeah usually where you take it away yeah so my favorite segment probably a lot of the Apple Faithful's favorite segment this is where we really get to know Angus you know we can ask him all the questions but we gotta hear his takes yeah like this is just like random stuff always comes out during this segment um temple takes you know it you love it this week we couldn't think of an alliteration so we're doing temple takes down under edition and for those that don't know we kind of this list is kind of different but we'll just give you something in this topic and then we're gonna hit you with an overrated or underrated and we're gonna have some some passionate arguments about it usually yeah it gets you needed arguments it depends yeah it depends on the subject I'm looking at a couple actually I feel like we kind of agreed on a lot I don't know if we're gonna agree on a lot of beats well we'll time will tell there's a couple on here that I'm I'm I'm excited to get some takes on yeah let's uh let's start with you know I was just thinking like I feel like a looking at this list I'm just thinking of that song like Do you come from the land down under oh yeah that's good and I feel like a lot of these things you could come right you could pull away from that song.
SPEAKER_01The first one is Vegemite which is a spread.
SPEAKER_03Yeah spread how do you describe it Angus? It's kind of hard to describe to be honest there's not really a lot of things like it's a lot of things oh I'm kind of throwing you under the bus because earlier he was like it's like Nutella but it's nothing like Nutella. It doesn't taste anything like that.
SPEAKER_00So it's a spread that you put on toast yeah you put on toast and it's you know you don't put too much you don't put not enough and you gotta put it with butter. Um and yeah it's I mean everyone grows everyone grows up eating it. It's something I honestly could not tell you how to describe it something you've really got to try to know. It's salty um but you know with the butter it's I don't know it's something I always eat it's a very comfy meal for me and I've got a jar of veggie bite in my fridge at home. You got it at home here. Yep got it here brought it over with me that was and you can get it here like it's you can get it here you can I think so do you think it's overated or underrated you can start a south I think it's underrated I think it's awesome but like you see videos of people eating veggie white by the spoonful like no one would ever do that. No one would ever do that. So don't do that. Have you had your roommates try it and stuff yeah people have tried it yeah I mean some of them I think there's a big stigma around it there from just the second I put in the mouth it's like not gross. Yeah. But you know can't hate it till you try it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah give it a go I guess yeah and I I'll be honest like I don't know when we were like going over the topics I feel like I've had this and now I've thought of like I there's no way I've ever had this because I would have known yeah it's like I don't even know if I can give a take like I I want to try it. Yeah I I feel like I I've seen it before but I've never tried it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah I've definitely seen once we looked up a picture of the jar I'm like I've seen it but I so I I would have been like I'm gonna I don't think I've ever done this I'm not even gonna give a take I'm gonna go unrated because I've never tried it I don't know why like I I don't know why I like had a total brain fart.
SPEAKER_01I've never had this before I'm not gonna give an opinion on it. But we should you should have brought it you should we should have got a screwboard I should have worked you know before next podcast we're both gonna try Vegemite and then next episode we'll give you we'll update everyone okay we could do that yeah just maybe bring a bag of it around everywhere with you in case you run into it. Just keep it local so if I ever see you on Leah course just pull it out just like you said not to do. Yeah he said don't eat it by the screenful give us a spoon. So I guess that was a total wash of the first one.
SPEAKER_03Maybe it was a good conversation starter because you know you can't talk Australia and not talk about vegemite if you're staple.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So what's this next one? Which is I mean look at it's pretty broad but I feel like the the the smart listeners will understand the the wildlife in Australia I feel like this is like one of the first things I think of alongside the Great Barrier Reef is like I feel like you guys just have some crazy wildlife over there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah there's a few ones that are definitely out there.
SPEAKER_01Like definitely is that like let's just start here like is that overrated like how much people talk about the wildlife in Australia or is it actually a thing?
SPEAKER_00No it's it's definitely there but it's so overrated. Like I don't have I don't have kangaroos in my backyard like I was I would imagine like walking down city it's not like kangaroos like squirrels.
SPEAKER_01I'd walk down city and see like a a snake fighting like a scorpion I feel like that's how like it's described yeah that's accurate.
SPEAKER_00No no definitely not I mean the wildlife's definitely there like you know snakes and spiders they're they're around you know but like in like trees and like it's not like in the city you're gonna see them no not always like we've had snakes and stuff at home and you get a lot of spiders spiders are definitely a big thing like are they huge? Yeah they're you know like a hand sized spider would size my hand a little bit spider like a big hand sized spider yeah some of them live underground I forget which ones they called the ones that live underground and so when it rains a lot before you step in your shoes before you get in your shoes you gotta step on them just to make sure you don't have a big spider hide.
SPEAKER_01No you're trolling us you have the biggest smell on your face you're laughing because you're you're pranking it I think so when it rains you're doing spider checks in the shoes if I gotta do a spider oh my god I'm not like yeah I don't like hate spiders but like in America they're like the size of like a quarter so wildlife like what is I guess like if you see this fill in the blank like I saw this and I like nearly blanked my pants like what wildlife is like the scariest over there?
SPEAKER_00The scariest the scariest one I hate sharks I hate sharks. Okay sharks scare me yeah so if you're in if you're just taking a dive in the ocean or something there so sharks are out we had a pretty bad summer this summer actually with shark attacks because there was big rain and all that kind of stuff so um the sharks are definitely pretty scary you know crocodiles those are they crockies crocs they'll kill you pretty quickly crocs not the shoes not the shoes um well if they're spiders then you're crocs oh god the snakes aren't the snakes aren't great either the they're you know god so this list is just there's yeah there's a lot of stuff but I mean it's so it is so overrated we'll put it that way like there is like it's not a daily occurrence it's not a daily occurrence by any means okay like that's good they're around but there's some pretty weird animals you know like the emus they're interesting ones wait that that's a bird right it's a bird yeah big bird like an ostrich but smaller I think it's smaller okay and you're just seeing that in your backyard no not quite all right so before I get my take I gotta just know one thing like this is something we've we've discussed briefly like a man versus a kangaroo impossible impossible like who's a funny video who's coming out on top of that fight like Dwayne the Rock Johnson versus a kangaroo I don't know it's it's hard. I mean kangaroos are super like skittish like they will run like if you do anything to them. So but there's pretty funny videos around like there's a video I remember of a guy just whacking a kangaroo because it like had his dog or something like that. But I mean I wouldn't want to fight a kangaroo put it that way because they just get up on their tails and I feel like those are like sneaky I feel like sneaky could just like jump on you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah like you know they got quick hands from what I've seen online I feel like I don't think the hands what you gotta worry about.
SPEAKER_00I think it's it's legs.
SPEAKER_01They're legs oh yeah that'd be bad yeah I'm gonna say like wildlife for me is underrated because like there's a reason they're wild like I I'm not into like if I just like I'm not I'm not someone who like if there needs to be a spider killed I can just kill the spider. But if I'm like walking down the road and then there's like snakes delore on my right like I'm not into all that. I don't think I would handle that.
SPEAKER_03I don't know who would be into all that.
SPEAKER_01Well like someone who just like I'm sure if Angus saw that he would be able to like just control that situation better. I'm saying like for me wildlife's underrated because I would not handle those situations well. If there was just like an alligator on the side of the road or a kangaroo approaching me. Like I'm not to me it's I don't know why you're giving that look I feel like this is a pretty fair explanation.
SPEAKER_03No I mean I'm kind of I'm not gonna yeah I don't know. You're saying underrated because you wouldn't know how to deal with it.
SPEAKER_01He said overrated.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01And I'm saying like he said overrated because saying it's like it's not that bad. There are there there are wildlife but it's not like scared of the wildlife overrated underrated sure I don't know um I mean you just we're confused about the spider so like if you you can't say overrated you no but like I want to go to our show and like see it.
SPEAKER_03We also didn't get into the good ones like I want to see a koala in my life like yeah those are cool or like what did we say a wombat wombat yeah if it's like a cap I love those yeah wombats are cool.
SPEAKER_00And like Great Barrier Reef like obviously I'm afraid so you have to say underrated yeah sure I can Great Barrier I'm still confused on your explanation but underrated okay I don't think I don't think I can explain what we're not I don't think it's gonna do it I can definitely see how it is underrated because it is pretty cool.
SPEAKER_01There's some pretty cool animals around for sure but yeah someone who lives there the whole skin Great Barrier Reef just like quick one overrated underrated Great Barrier Reef has like a spa to like go.
SPEAKER_00I've never been never been to the Great Barrier Reef cousins have been they said it was pretty awesome but I don't know it doesn't really it's just a reef I would think it'd be really cool. I like reefs I'm sure it'd be cool but the thing is in um Great Barrier Reef there's these things called Irikanji jellyfish they're box jellyfish. Oh yeah that would scare me so if you get stung by one of those it's pretty much game over. So when you're swimming at the Great Barrier Reef you've got to wear like full body wetsuit so that nothing you can't get touched by these little jellyfish.
SPEAKER_03I forgot there's like there's a lot of deadly animals over down down under.
SPEAKER_00There's a lot of mean ones yeah I'm not into like jellyfish I've had a traumatic experience with one when I was younger I'll just leave it at that stung me in a place that no man wants to be stung oh god on to the next one rugby versus football which is not overenterated you just pick um rugby's a big sport in Australia in fact one of the Philadelphia Eagles players Jordan Mylotta former rugby star in Australia I mean football for I mean I could just answer for you right yeah you can answer for me too you know it's gonna be football we love our football here I don't really understand rugby but I think it is a cool sportby's a cool sport um I just yeah somehow rugby it's just harder to get into for me I've tried you tried playing it or watching I could not imagine you playing rugby no offense I don't think anyone could um yeah I'm just gonna say football just leave it at that but I want to hear I guess you know have to go underrated I mean yeah it's rugby's a a big part of my life I guess back home like my whole family's played rugby I played rugby growing up all my mates yeah my little brother plays rugby my grandfather played rugby real physical sport real physical sport but you know it's awesome it's fun it's kind of part of it's kind of part of school like so in high school we all would um it was like in high school you were able to choose two sports so you'd do rugby and rowing and so one for summer one for winter is what I did and so like the first 15 games like all you think about in school is like I just want to go play it in the first I want to be in the number one team and like some of the games get like I don't know 1000 people going and watch them so it's like awesome like the atmosphere around rugby is pretty cool yeah and so it is I think I think rugby I could I could get into rugby if I really like wanted to I think I could get into it it's pretty hard probably a pretty like football wasn't an option like I feel like that's I mean it's pretty hard to get into it here to be honest like there isn't a lot of options with rugby but I'm sure if you were to come out to Australia you could I bet it's like have a look I bet everyone's playing rugby over there. Yeah like rugby is the football kind of thing but there's so many variations of rugby is the other thing like there's rugby union there's IFL which is kind of not like rugby then there's rugby league so there's a few different rules yeah that's one thing about football that I like is I know we have flags we have flags of football but like football is football yeah there's no like variation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Alright that's fair I could I could be convinced to tune into some rugby. Yeah. Let's go reverse seasons which always just confuses me. Yeah it it's crazy concept. It really like I can't process this yeah like our winter is their summer their summer is our winter you say it okay January is hot that makes no sense and you think no Christmas is hot that's not the one that gets me I can I because like Florida is I'm thinking July is colder than December yeah that is kind of great that's that that is like July is like to me July is summer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah and we said it before the podcast but Angus is obviously here from August to May so then you go home and it's winter in July.
SPEAKER_00Yeah more or less but you know it's a bit of a different climate so it's not it's not as cold definitely winter kind of yeah more or less yeah like what is the coldest day when you go home over the summer I don't know in Fahrenheit. Um you said like 70 like you know you'll get like a cold day would be like 60s. Yeah okay like a cold day would be like 60s not the old day is bad for you but that's like that's yeah that's a cold day.
SPEAKER_01UB is still three like he's fine or you're sporting a thing it's July cold winter. Yeah I I to me it's like I don't know overrated because like I just can't imagine I don't know like the the idea of like going home for summer break and it's cold it's like really hard to get my head around it.
SPEAKER_00I don't think you're the only one. But like there's so many like cool destinations you can go to like I think this year like I'm planning you want to go back I'm gonna go to Indonesia for a few weeks on like a surfing trip with some friends and stuff like that and do that. So I think that's kind of the plan a little bit.
SPEAKER_01You know what's cool is like yeah I'm gonna go to Indonesia for a few weeks and surf like and then it's like I think about if I want to go to Indonesia I gotta take seven planes and two boats. It's like eight hour layover yeah it's like whoa I'm just gonna head over to Indonesia yeah that's it's crazy.
SPEAKER_03That's a crazy like yeah I guess I'm going overrated too like I don't know who would like this. Yeah this is crazy.
SPEAKER_00This is making me upset actually I'm I'm upset for you. Yeah no it's definitely one of the downsides for sure you miss out on the but you know it's pretty nice it's pretty nice do you home for winter break? Yeah it's pretty nice going from the cold into the sick it's always hard when you you get on the plane in shorts and have to come off in jeans and a million layers so terrible.
SPEAKER_01Alright this next one I am can you just I don't even know what this means. Yeah you don't know what a boomerang is I feel like that's like I know what a boomerang is when I think Australia like boomerang's on the list. I don't know like I wrote this one down pretending like I knew I don't even know what you don't know what a boomerang is? I know what why is it on land and under takes I don't understand that. Because it's like a thing like oh like I feel like it's part of the like the stereotype saying it's because she's not doing a great job of uh I don't know what's going on. What do you mean what is there to explain?
SPEAKER_03Like they throw boomerangs like we we throw frisbees around like in the yard like they're throwing boomerangs did a boomerang originate in Australia?
SPEAKER_01I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah so it's like a hunting tool of the native people. Wait, sorry what after originally this is why I wanted him to explain the trick with a boomerang is meant to throw it and it's meant to do a big circle and come back around and it's meant you're meant to be able to catch it. And so um I wouldn't say that you know it's our replacement with a frisbee we've still got frisbees um but yeah boomerang's there yeah they're originally a hunting thing for the Aboriginal so they would throw it and catch birds and stuff like that with it because it would knock them and then the boomerang would come back to them and you can grab them. But it's pretty cool it's like a I'm sure everyone's seen one boomerang.
SPEAKER_01So I'm gonna sound pretty dumb here. Like you're talking about hunting like they would throw this at a bird who would like hit the bird and then bring the bird right back to him?
SPEAKER_03No the bird would fall and the ground but can you imagine like killing a bird and it just swoops about and you catch it and the bird's like dead and you're gonna be a little bit hunting tool not a replacement for a frisbee.
SPEAKER_00But people just go to the bottom yeah definitely definitely that's the I think there's a trick to it like you can't just throw it like a frisbee and it's gonna come back to you. It's like you gotta like it's like I can't do it.
SPEAKER_01It's probably pretty satisfying when you just see a thing go come back or something. It's cool. Yeah they are cool I'll say underrated but I I think if I went to Australia I'd be like yeah throw me a boomerang let's let's like you couldn't throw it like amongst friends right you could you definitely could but like like yeah what they're meant for though I guess like a one man show yeah you wouldn't just like here not that happens often I went to a park once in a blue moon someone would just be throwing themselves a boomerang that's not happening in Australia.
SPEAKER_00This is like a strictly a hunting no that that is happening like people throw them but they're not like the traditional ones like you know it'll be a plastic one that they'll throw in it comes when she comes back.
SPEAKER_03I feel like we've had we have that here like I've definitely seen people try and do it but yeah I I think it's probably a lot harder to throw it than I would imagine you can go to the park and someone's throwing a boomerang through that way. Well I'm going underrated because now I want one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah I I want a boomerang and some vegemite on it.
SPEAKER_03Boomerang with vegemite and maybe some hundreds and thousands which we'll get into later This.
SPEAKER_00Let's just get there first.
SPEAKER_03Do you think overrated or underrated?
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna give it underrated. I think boomerang's a cool. Not a replacement for a frisbee, though. Not a replacement for a frisbee. That's fine. Make sure of that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. That's funny. Okay. Now you get to explain this next one, Dave.
SPEAKER_01Alright, so, you know, I was just like thinking of temple takes, and I'm like thinking about things with Australia. And I realized, like, wait, Australia's a continent.
SPEAKER_03Which sparked our whole like list of weeks. We touched a lot of global hours.
SPEAKER_01We've gone really global with this podcast, which is awesome. But I was just thinking, like, why does Australia have a continent? Like, continents are a big deal. There's only seven of them. North America, Europe. Think about any countries in Europe, Asia, all those countries.
SPEAKER_03But I mean it's huge. That country is ginormous.
SPEAKER_01Australia?
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_01It's big. Yeah, it's pretty big, but it's pretty big. It's not it's big, but it doesn't scream continent big.
SPEAKER_03Like continent big.
SPEAKER_01No, like seriously. Like, think about the size of North America. And then think about the size of Australia.
SPEAKER_03But like also, what who else would be in that continent? Like, you're gonna go across the sea to go to a different continent? Like, it does make sense in my brain.
SPEAKER_01I'm not, yes. When you think about it, it does make sense. Like geographically, yes. Is it crazy that just Australia is a country and a continent? Yes. That to me is crazy.
SPEAKER_03It kind of is.
SPEAKER_01And I know, like, is New Zealand part of the Yeah, I think so.
SPEAKER_00I think like New Zealand is, and then there's like Papua New Guinea, um, and there's a few like other islands. I don't know if it's a good idea.
SPEAKER_03But it's named after one country in the continent.
SPEAKER_01Which is great. Like they didn't come up with some term to group those. I know.
SPEAKER_00I think there might be something, but like if we don't know it, then it's not real in Australia. Yeah, it's not real. We always grew up learning that.
SPEAKER_01That's gotta be one of the more overrated things. It's almost a Fugazi, in my opinion. Like Conspiracy theory, it's it's insane to me, actually. Okay. There's no like changing it, just the when you actually think about it.
SPEAKER_03Hey, don't never say never.
SPEAKER_01Like it's crazy. Australia as a continent is overrated. I'm sorry. Country, I'd want to go. I do. Put me on that 20-hour flight. I'm there. They're playing an NFL game this year in Australia, which is crazy.
SPEAKER_03Who is playing, do you know?
SPEAKER_01Rams vs. Niners, 10 a.m. I don't I don't even know why that's happening, but uh as a continent to me is is a huge Fuyazi that needs to be talked about more.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm I'm gonna go underrated. Like, I don't know. You're really passionate about it, and I'm not as passionate, but I think there's only seven continents.
SPEAKER_01Just think about that. There's seven contents.
SPEAKER_03But like, what is the other option? Like I said.
SPEAKER_01What one would you put it a pot of? Uh I again it's not, it's I know this argument sounds dumb. It's not like wrong, it's just insane. It's just wild to you.
SPEAKER_03It's a crazy thing.
SPEAKER_01Maybe I, you know.
SPEAKER_03This is not the one I thought you were gonna be like, I just have a real thing.
SPEAKER_01Someone will not have some sense in me. I just can't make sense of this. Angus, what do you what do you have to say? I'm going underwrit it. I think it's, you know, great place. That's okay. This is the last thing I'll talk about, then we can move on. Is this something that people like in Australia take pride in?
SPEAKER_00I guess you could say so, yeah. Like there was always like it's we used to be told it's like Australia is an island, a continent, and a country. Alright, okay, that's exactly what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_03That's what I wanted to hear.
SPEAKER_01I'm glad they're taking pride in it. I would. I know I would.
SPEAKER_03They're walking around with a with a different type of confidence.
SPEAKER_01Let's let's do this last one that's just gonna drive me.
SPEAKER_03No, this one is crazy because we had our list all set and then we asked about fairy bread, which I saw a picture of, which is bread, butter, and sprinkles. And he was like, What are you saying? Sprinkles. I mean, there's so many words for this like concept. Sprinkles and Dave's part of the part of the country. I'm not a jimmy.
SPEAKER_01I don't say Jimmy's. Okay, I got a bone to pick. I know Jimmy's is a territorial thing, it's very local. I just never got behind the whole, oh, it's Jimmy's. Like, no, that's like a that's like my old teammate Jimmy. Like, no, that's that's not uh that's not something you put on your ice page.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but then in Australia.
SPEAKER_01In Australia had to one up with within.
SPEAKER_03They had to make Jimmy's, but even worse, like you could say like a thousand times worse. And what are sprinkles called over there?
SPEAKER_00Hundreds and thousands. Hundreds and hundreds and thousands. Yeah. I don't even we're not even asked why.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, wait, do you know the background or no?
SPEAKER_00I know, but I assume just because there's hundreds and thousands of them. Like they're just small. It's like they're just small little things.
SPEAKER_01We already checked this, but just so the podcast knows, like when Angus goes home and wants to get an ice cream cone and he wants to put toppings on it, he will he will say, Can I have ice cream with hundreds and thousands of things?
SPEAKER_03Why can't it just be like hundreds or something? Like you really have-hundreds and thousands. Like, that is a tongue twister.
SPEAKER_01And they're like, Here's your ice cream with hundreds and thousands. There's just too many words.
SPEAKER_03With extra hundreds and thousands of things.
SPEAKER_01Too many words are being exchanged for what's actually going on here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You just go home and be like, hey guys, I figured out like you can call it sprinkles or jimmies, and it's gonna save everyone.
SPEAKER_03Like if you said Jimmy's, I bet everyone would be so confused.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've never heard Jimmy's before. Wait, so if you go, really? Even in Philly? Even in Philly, like that was totally new to me.
SPEAKER_03We all my teammates call like the chocolate ones jimmy's.
SPEAKER_00They'll put them right on there for you. Yeah. They might even say what flavor.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So so that's a that's do people say sprinkles back home or no? Yeah, definitely. I mean, you get hundreds of thousands and you get sprinkles. It's kind of yeah, hundreds of thousands, and then sprinkles. Okay, which is which is more common? I reckon hundreds of thousands, yeah. That's crazy. I still think what the like the older generation will call them, but then like yeah. I want hundreds and thousands.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm I'm going overrated on hundreds and thousands.
SPEAKER_01I'm just so it's just not I so overrated. Like it's so like it's crazy. You said underrated? Underrated, it's a good one. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_03What do you think someone's doing? If you go to twist, what's the correlation with Jimmy's?
SPEAKER_01Don't even ask. I don't even know. I don't know. How does hundreds and things? I should know this. Jimmy's is I'm not behind Jimmy's. I think sprinkles is the only right answer. Alright, well that about does it for Temple Takes. That was pretty fun.
SPEAKER_03Wait, I gotta look it up. Jimmy's origin story.
SPEAKER_01While you while you look that up, I'll I'll transition up to the next segment. Final segment, Ow R Fal. Owl, something soaring upwards. That would be named after the American Conference mascot. Sword the Eagle.
SPEAKER_03Soar the Eagle is the only uh conference that only conference that has a mascot, and ours is Sore the Eagle.
SPEAKER_01This is not usually my line.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because did I find out this fun fact that I just shared every day?
SPEAKER_01I'm pretty sure I did, but that's oh my god, it's always um I think we did actually. That's a better way of putting it. We we discovered that together. Yes, we no, because it was actually on conference sack. I I think we I think it was both us.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Um just say it was.
SPEAKER_03Uh we're a team here.
SPEAKER_01And the fouls, something needs to be improved. It's uh not acceptable. Just put it that way. Temple needs to be. Owl this week, we talked about them earlier, men's tennis on a three-game heater, no big deal.
SPEAKER_03Dude, is it after Ayush? Like, is it like the podcast effect?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think it is. We call it the podcast effect. We should have before. Um, which means Mason Tomey is on for a great weekend. He's gonna have a good championship at the Princeton Classic this upcoming weekend. But men's tennis. And Angus. And Angus, of course. Uh men's tennis, three-game win streak, going into conference play. You know, obviously their conference is really tough, but you know, winning three games going into that. Hopefully they have some confidence, ready to go. Shout out to them and Ayush uh holding it down on senior day.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Foul. Um, there's not much to say on this one.
SPEAKER_03I If you know, you know. It's kind of like was last week the week of the Broad Street bikers? Like this kind of goes hand in hand, I feel like.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it does, for sure. But this is more of a specific, like if you're putting a speaker on your backpack and playing music aloud, you need to check yourself immediately. It's some self-reflection. Like, can you just put in some headphones? We all well, everyone wears them. Do people do this on campus?
SPEAKER_03I thought it was like walking on the side of the street, like by Broad Street, I just think.
SPEAKER_01But it gets nice out. I've seen this on campus. They clip on the speaker or they tuck it in the backpack. We all see it on the side talking.
SPEAKER_03We know it's you.
SPEAKER_01And it's just music playing out loud. Like, look, I'm not gonna lie, usually it's never anything I want to hear. If it was something I wanted to hear, maybe I'd feel differently. Just put the just put the headphones in. Like, just put them in. We don't want to hear the music or whatever else you're playing. I don't even know if it's music at this point. It's just like loud noises. Um I just feel like if you're if you're putting the speaker on your backpack, you gotta check yourself. You guys agree, I think this is pretty universal. Yeah. Universal date. Just a foul.
SPEAKER_03It is. Just work on it. I don't know if like this is gonna make a difference, but like you never know.
SPEAKER_01Well, tell a friend to tell a friend, and that's how these things work.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like Australia shouldn't be a continent for Dave. And then also speakers are not a lot on background.
SPEAKER_01You're gonna get me in trouble with the Australian crowd because I know we're gonna get some Australian listeners.
SPEAKER_03His mates are gonna listen and they're gonna hate you.
SPEAKER_01Angus's mates need to know I'm not anti-Australian as a continent. I just think it's a crazy concept. That's all I'm blown away by it. That's alright, and that's all we got for you guys. Angus, thanks for joining us. We'll be we'll be sure to tune in to men's crew and hopefully make it out to a rhodotic. Yep. Congrats on your success so far uh and good luck to the team the rest of the way. Yeah, awesome.
SPEAKER_00Thanks, guys.
SPEAKER_01Thanks for having me. Go owls. Go out.
