The Microshift Project Podcast - Episode 3 - My Mirror Moment

Nicholas Volinchak Season 1 Episode 3

There are moments in life that cut through all the noise—the ones where someone tells you the truth you’ve been avoiding. For me, that moment came at exactly midnight on Valentine’s Day, 2005, when I walked into the Rescue Mission at 21 years old. I was broke, homeless, and addicted, and Frank—the man on duty that night—looked me in the eye and asked a question that stopped me cold:

“What are you doing with your life that at 21 years old, coming from Canfield, Ohio, you ended up at a homeless shelter?”

That wasn’t judgment. It was honesty. And for the first time, I couldn’t dodge it.

In this episode, I take you back to that night—to the choices that landed me there, the raw truth Frank spoke into my life, and why that mirror moment was the start of real change. It wasn’t instant transformation. It was the first crack in the armor of excuses, the first time I felt the weight of my own decisions.

This story isn’t just about addiction or homelessness—it’s about perseverance. It’s about what happens when we’re finally confronted with the truth we can’t escape, and what we choose to do with it. Whether you’re leading a company, building a career, or just trying to hold it all together, we all hit points where success on the outside doesn’t match what’s happening on the inside. That’s where the real work begins.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, lost, or quietly questioning if this is all there is—this conversation is for you. Because sometimes, all it takes is one moment, one question, one voice that makes us finally see ourselves clearly. And from there, the climb begins.
