Today I'm reading John fourteen, verses twenty seven through thirty one. I am leaving you with a gift peace of mind and heart, and the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give, so don't be troubled or afraid. Remember what I told you. I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father who is greater than I am. I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe. I don't have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let's be going. Goodbyes change relationships. Even when people remain connected, the relationship itself begins to look different. Familiar rhythms disappear. Presence changes. Questions about what comes next begin to surface. That feeling is woven throughout John 14. Jesus has been preparing his disciples for his departure, and they're struggling to understand what life will look like without him physically beside them. Everything about their experience of following him has been tangible. They've walked with him, listened to him, watched him respond to people, and learned by staying close. Now that's about to change. In the middle of that uncertainty, Jesus says, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. But the peace he offers is connected to something deeper than comfort. He's preparing them to understand that his departure will not mean his absence. The relationship is not ending, it's changing. That's why Jesus continues by telling them not to let their hearts remain troubled or afraid. The stability they need will no longer come from physical proximity to him. It'll come from learning to remain connected to him in a deeper way. Everything in this chapter has been moving toward that reality. The Father revealed through the Son, God dwelling with his people, the Spirit remaining within them, children welcomed into the family of God. All of it points towards ongoing relationship. The disciples don't fully understand it yet, but Jesus is preparing them for a kind of closeness that will continue even when he's no longer standing beside them physically. That becomes the foundation for what comes next. Soon, Jesus will describe himself as the vine and his followers as the branches. The invitation will become clear. Remain in me. Abiding is not about trying to hold on to Jesus from a distance. It's learning to live connected to the one who's still present. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with.
