Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
This week on Once Upon a Time in Music, EL and Cheryl Poison slow things all the way down and tap into their favorite R&B joints — the deep cuts, the late-night vibes, and the songs you might’ve skipped back in the day but need to hear again right now.
From ’70s soul to 2000s R&B, the crew puts listeners on to hidden gems and timeless classics from artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, Bootsy Collins, Jodeci, Music Soulchild, Toni Braxton, Ginuwine, Kelly Price, Mariah Carey, Jhené Aiko, The Isley Brothers, Intro, and more. If you love smooth vocals, grown-folk music, and records that still hit no matter the era, this one’s for you.
They also jump into Kiss, Marry, Kill, run a Price Tag Check comparing then vs. now, talk new music and mixed reviews, spotlight a classic album anniversary, and reminisce about mixtapes, Columbia House CDs, and how certain songs just feel different when they come on late at night.
This episode is pure vibes, laughs, nostalgia, and R&B love — and by the end, it’s clear this one needs a Part 2.

SPEAKER_06It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are?
SPEAKER_07It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are?
SPEAKER_00The world can be an unforgiving place. Fox Five and Nobody Beats the Wiz want to remind you. It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are?
SPEAKER_05Yep, yep, yep. What's up, what's up, what's up? We back another episode. Another one. I'm juiced up still. He's juiced up. Hyped up.

SPEAKER_05We are doing our favorite RB joints.
SPEAKER_02Yep, yep.
SPEAKER_05We're about to put y'all onto some heat.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it might, you might, you might have never heard some of these songs.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, this might be the one you skip.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, deep cuts. And you might need to go back. Yeah, yeah. I think I'm gonna write some of these down as we go along, too. Um also, what what else we got? We got Kiss Mary Kill.
SPEAKER_05I got you some good people.

SPEAKER_02Uh, what else? We got price tag check. We got uh a little bit of news. News, music spotlight. Um, yeah, but how you been?
SPEAKER_05I'm good.
SPEAKER_02Have you been listening to anything new?
SPEAKER_05No. I need to listen to my man. My man, my man, my man.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh. Don't rush.
SPEAKER_05My man, my man, my man.
SPEAKER_02Don't rush.
SPEAKER_05You could do no wrong in my eyes.
SPEAKER_02Don't rush.
SPEAKER_05Nas, I love you. You could do no wrong in my eyes. It's some people are saying that your joint ain't it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But it's not.
SPEAKER_05Whatever.
SPEAKER_02I I think I got through three songs.
SPEAKER_05Oh, whatever.
SPEAKER_02Super mediocre.
SPEAKER_05So what is it? Is it the beats or is it the rhymes?
SPEAKER_02Both. I can't. Definitely the beats. They try to make something just because it's Premier beats, but it's like Premier put the songs out and was like, yo, Naz, you gotta work on these are the ones you gotta make songs to.
SPEAKER_05I'm biased, so I can't. He does no wrong in my eyes.
SPEAKER_02Well, I didn't listen to the whole thing.
SPEAKER_05I'll listen to it and I'll let y'all know next week.
SPEAKER_02What's the name of that album? You know?
SPEAKER_05Light Years. Something light years.
SPEAKER_02So it's a new album that just dropped this Friday past called Light Years. Uh Nas and DJ Pamir. Yep. Um internet's talking about it. It's almost mixed reviews. Some people saying it's good, some people say it's good.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it is a lot of mixed reviews.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. They're like, the ones I've been hearing, oh, it's the best album this year. It's definitely not that.
SPEAKER_05It's not.
SPEAKER_02Come on now. Kendrick Lamar. It's not too many albums that's gonna beat Kendrick Lamar this year.
SPEAKER_03Whatever.
SPEAKER_02Now, if it came out next year, yeah. If they put it out January, it would have been the best album of 2026.
SPEAKER_05I gotta listen to Conway too. He has a new joint.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It came out Friday too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I clicked on it, but I didn't get all the way in it. Also, who else? 21 Savage came out with something.
SPEAKER_05I don't really listen to it too much. 21. 21.
SPEAKER_02I like 21. I like it.
SPEAKER_05So you already listened to it?
SPEAKER_02Nah, I was saving it.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02That and uh I think two weeks prior to that, uh Day La Soul came out with an album.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02So I've been holding off on listening to those.
SPEAKER_05You've been saving the best for last?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's been hectic past uh couple days. So I ain't been focused on the music.
SPEAKER_04I understand completely.
SPEAKER_02I've been listening, but listening to old stuff. And um let's get in uh music spotlight.
SPEAKER_05Okay, what you got for us?
SPEAKER_02Music Spotlight. It just happened to be December uh 1993. This week, uh I think December 21st, 1993, a group put out an album. I think it might be one of the best RB group albums in the 90s. Jodice Diaries of a Bad of a Mad Band. Yeah. That had uh Cry for You, Cry For You Fiend lately. Uh they had a lot. They had a good couple.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was a good joint.
SPEAKER_02That was a good album. That wasn't a first album, that was a third. Second, possibly second, yeah. But Cry for You and Fiend really I can't leave you alone. That video, the remix. We talked about the remix on here once before. Um yeah, that came out. How many years ago is that? How many years ago was 1993? 1993.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, I was in 11th grade.
SPEAKER_02So 95 is how many? It's 25 years. 30? 30. So this is about 38 years ago?
SPEAKER_05Oh god.
SPEAKER_02Wow. No, it can't be.
SPEAKER_05No. It can't be. 95 is 30. 93, I'd be 32. 32 years?
SPEAKER_02Oh man.
SPEAKER_05God, it don't seem like it's been that long.
SPEAKER_02I remember listening to it. I remember this album.
SPEAKER_05Did I have the tape or the CD? What did we have in 93? Do we have tapes?
SPEAKER_02Okay, Columbia House was rocking.
SPEAKER_05Okay, so we had CDs. I think I had the CD. I probably got it from Columbia House.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think I had the CD.
SPEAKER_05I mean, somebody else might have ordered it from Columbia House and didn't pay that money. That's what I'm talking about. It was somebody else, not me though. Not me.
SPEAKER_02A different name. And then you go in the uh you go in the magazines and they got the the little thing that you tear out? Tear out and you fill it out and send it in. Come on. How many of those you send out?
SPEAKER_05I got me a lot of CDs.
SPEAKER_02I think that started my collection, Columbia House.
SPEAKER_05Shout out. Shout out to them.
SPEAKER_02Definitely. That and a dice game. A dice game.
SPEAKER_05I don't know about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was playing dice for one of my friends for CDs. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We could play over it. You got some dice? Hey, I can find some around here now. Some dice?
SPEAKER_02I got some in the car. What you want to do?
SPEAKER_05What you want to do?
SPEAKER_02Hey, that's what I'm talking about. Okay. My nigga. All right, let's get into Kiss Mary Kill. Kiss Mary Kill. I got some good people.
SPEAKER_05Got it right. Of course. I'm going to get it right from now on. We got some good people for you, too.
SPEAKER_02We're trying to hook you up. Go first then.
SPEAKER_05Always go first.
SPEAKER_02Go ahead.
SPEAKER_05Okay. So now Lathan.

SPEAKER_02Nobody before me. Nobody.
SPEAKER_05I don't care who you kiss before me. You kiss me, it's gonna be it. Yeah, that's it. That's how I feel. Forever. Forever.

SPEAKER_05Wow.
SPEAKER_02That's not too bad of a jump.
SPEAKER_05That's not, but come on now.
SPEAKER_02It's not. It's really only, you know, another dollar and a half. Maybe.

SPEAKER_02Oh, I'll put you on then. Just go down, further, walk further down. It's nowhere near all the way to the end. It's nowhere near the wonder bread. It's probably in a plain color. It's green and white or blue and white. There's no other cup. I don't know if they have names on it, but you know, it's way down.
SPEAKER_05Bread is one of the things that I will eat, like a cheap kind. I don't have to have. Like I will get the expensive brand, but I don't have to have it.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna get an expensive brand and make a sandwich with it just to see.
SPEAKER_05It's gonna be the same. It's whatever you put on the bread that's making it.
SPEAKER_02My mother used to buy the expensive brands. And I realized they were the expensive brands once I got older.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. You notice that about a lot of stuff.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm. I like um Nature's Own. That's the kind I use. Nature's own. Or Wonder Bread. What else I like? My sister likes bunny bread. I don't buy bunny bread too much. But if I'm buying it, I'm gonna get Nature's own white wheat.

SPEAKER_05It's a brand of bread.
SPEAKER_02I never heard that.
SPEAKER_05Look on the aisle, you'll see it. Okay, it got a little bunny on it.

SPEAKER_05No? Not a classic. Oh no. Kindred? Yep. What's the name of the song? This might be too classic for me. Stars.
SPEAKER_03So many times you could have walked away.
SPEAKER_02That's that soul right there.
unknownBut I didn't have a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a side.
SPEAKER_02This is the Kendrick Family Soul. It's a couple. Husband and wife.
SPEAKER_05And that's neat. Husband and wife doing a song together.
SPEAKER_02No, they do hold that's the one. I guess you call it a band.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Watch me. Put me on to stuff I ain't on to.
SPEAKER_02I'm surprised. I'm more you would think like a female with, you know.
unknownWe trust in a love.
SPEAKER_02I I can see a female listening more RB than a guy, but the deep cuts. The deep cuts.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_03I'm thugged out with it.
SPEAKER_02Are you?
SPEAKER_03I have a little thugged out. Yeah, you are.
SPEAKER_02Um, so that was uh 2003. Um the name of the album was uh Surrender to Love. Surrender to Love in 2003.
SPEAKER_05Surrender to love. Yep, yep. Okay. I'm gonna have to check that out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_05You got pretty good taste in music, so I'll take your um Thank you.
SPEAKER_02You do too. Thanks. I think maybe I might have gone for deep cuts.
SPEAKER_05I I well I guess I went for the stuff that like really moved me. Like if I hear it, I have to hear the whole thing.
SPEAKER_02You know what it is, I think if I hear something on the radio so much or too much You don't like it no more, yeah. But I probably still would listen to the whole album, and the album probably would have songs on it. So I think a lot of that with genuine albums, like genuine games.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he has some hidden gems on his.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, some big stuff on some of it on his first three albums. He had some like good songs on it, but I never listened to like pony and stuff like that. That was my skip.
SPEAKER_05Pony used to be my song. I was at I was outside during pony.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, do the dance.
SPEAKER_05I ain't doing the dance, but I was outside. I was outside. And it was sliding around. I was outside.
SPEAKER_02All right, um, it's your turn, right?
SPEAKER_05It's my turn.
SPEAKER_04All right.
SPEAKER_05This is one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_02Hold on, I got a problem going on.
SPEAKER_05B said you can't have more than one favorite. But he's lying. I ain't listening because I got a lot of favorites.
SPEAKER_02I ain't listening to no B Easy. Because he don't even know the word favorites and favorites. He wanna make it technical.
SPEAKER_05B said you can't have two favorites.
SPEAKER_02He's sick.
SPEAKER_05This is one of my favorites. This is some smooth music that you could grow to. This is Marvin Gay, I want you, 1976. The album is I Want You also. I want you. And it also had a famous painting as the cover.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it did?
SPEAKER_05The sugar shack with the in it dancing.
SPEAKER_02Oh, the good time shape. The good time. I bet you this is one of those extended ones. I think it comes. So hopefully the listeners have written these down in the channel.
SPEAKER_05I hope so. Make y'all a little playlist.
SPEAKER_02You know what? The songs I put on here, I'll make a playlist and I'll send it to if you are Apple Music listeners. I'll send it to me too. Yeah, I'll send it out to you. If you know, sometimes you want to hear the whole thing. I want to, I'd be wanting to hear the whole thing. Like every time I click on one of these songs, I want to. You want to let it play out. Let it play. I I want to dance to it, not dance to it. Uh gangsters don't dance out. You want to grow to it. Yeah, gangsters don't dance, they boogie. As it says.
SPEAKER_05You want to grow to it.
SPEAKER_02But I don't think I would have a list if I didn't have this artist on my list.
SPEAKER_05Is it Tony Braxton?
SPEAKER_02Queen at RB.
SPEAKER_05Is she really the queen? Uh I don't know. I think you're going too far. She might be the princess.
SPEAKER_02Nah, I can't give you that yet. But she's good. This is uh The Art of Love. Tony Braxton. It's from the Heat album. And that was uh 2000. This is like the smooth, kind of just listened to kind of beat. A lot of people never heard this song.
SPEAKER_05He just biased because he liked Tony.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. This is one of those songs.
SPEAKER_05Wrong people music. Chill with your boo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I used to play this all the time in the car. Like, this is it to me. And I don't even think she's she does a little bit of ad-libbing, but she ain't singing on that one.
SPEAKER_05So you just want to hear her voice.
SPEAKER_02Nah, listen to the beat. Listen to the beat. I'm listening to the beat. Whatever. I don't know if I like her voice like that. I don't know. I don't know. Whatever. It's something about her.
SPEAKER_05I understand that. Maybe something about certain people.
SPEAKER_02Don't say that. Don't say the N-word.
SPEAKER_05They already know how I feel.
SPEAKER_02Oh, boy.
SPEAKER_05Everybody who knows me know how I feel about that person.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so we're starting to Nas band.
SPEAKER_05No, we're not. We're not. We're not. We're gonna keep saying his name till I meet him.
SPEAKER_02Till you meet him?
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02It's gonna be hard.
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_02You could you should've did that um that Wu-Tang concert.
SPEAKER_05I should've.
SPEAKER_02Because he ended up going to a lot of those dates.
SPEAKER_05I'ma meet him. I'ma meet him at the perfect time.
SPEAKER_02And you see, what, last week? I think I said last week. He ended up with him again.
SPEAKER_05It's gonna happen. I'm packing up my little raggedy bags and I'm leaving.
SPEAKER_02Raggedy bags? Is that a pocket book or overnight bag? My overnight bag. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_05Anyway, let's move on. Before I say too much. Alright, my next song.
unknownWell, well, well.
SPEAKER_05Some smoothness. This is grown people music. I must be old because I got a lot of old joints. You get me.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Okay. This is footsteps. No, this is the wrong one.
SPEAKER_02Uh.
SPEAKER_05This ain't on your list. This ain't it. Then with you. That's a good one too, though.
SPEAKER_02Nah.
SPEAKER_05That could have made my list.
SPEAKER_02I'm so I'm mad now. My song is Footsteps in the Dark. I'm messed the whole the whole show up. We might as well. Man, just turn the mic off.
SPEAKER_051977. Listen right here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Alright.
SPEAKER_02A lot of samples over this one.
SPEAKER_05A lot.
SPEAKER_02I think Ice Cube killed it.
SPEAKER_05He did. I used to love that song too. Today was a good day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_07Are we to that voice?
SPEAKER_05The name of the album is Go For Your Guns, The Isley Brothers. Yeah, that's a real Footsteps in the Dark.
SPEAKER_02They got like two versions of that. They got like a part one and part two.
SPEAKER_05I think it's just like extended.
SPEAKER_02It's just like a bridge or something, Bray.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Alright. That's my joint.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's a good one. That's a real good one. I told you yours is in the you you got the 70s on. This is yours, yours is a 70s list. And mine's is the deep cut list.
SPEAKER_05Yours is the 2000s.
SPEAKER_02The deep cut list. Alright. This song right here, no matter when it comes on, I listen to the whole thing. And I don't know why. Maybe it's the the flute, uh piano, whatever's in the background. I can't wait to hear what it is. Oh, this is a classic. And this is another one of those songs that come on at night. Every radio station, every city. This is Music Soul Child. So beautiful.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, this is a good one.
SPEAKER_02And uh the name of the album is On My Radio.
SPEAKER_04Your My Baby. My lover.
unknownMy lady.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, some picks too.
SPEAKER_02Man, I'm telling you. This album came out in 2008.
SPEAKER_04Drives me crazy.
SPEAKER_02They got an extended video for this. Like the videos like uh 14 minutes long. Because they play the beat and just things are going on in the video. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Feel the same way. Like a wedding song.
SPEAKER_04Just feel so right.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna play this on the way out of here today. And it's it's afternoon right now. And I'm gonna play this.
SPEAKER_04I know I'm gonna always choose to be with you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a good one. That's a classic right there for me. Yes. I can hear that. If I'm skipping through a song or something like that, that one of the songs.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, uh a glimpse of it.
SPEAKER_02I'm on it. That's what I'm listening to. Alright, what you got?
SPEAKER_05Alright, my next one is another one of my favorites. And it is a remake of a Stevie Wonder song.
SPEAKER_02Oh, this is?
SPEAKER_05No. We don't go on that. We'll go with this, okay.
SPEAKER_02Wait.
SPEAKER_05I'll go with what you got. This is 1996 Genuine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05The Bachelor album. Pretty boy Genuine. Yeah. Only when you're lonely.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's not the song you meant to send me?
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm. It must have got mixed up.
SPEAKER_02I know this is definitely a song that would have been on my list.
SPEAKER_05This would have been on your list?
SPEAKER_02Definitely.
SPEAKER_05Like this? Uh-huh. This whole album.
SPEAKER_04Only you are she with another man. This is you. I am your man.
SPEAKER_02Classic.
SPEAKER_05Classic. 1996.
SPEAKER_02You know how often I used to play Genuine back in the day?
SPEAKER_05How often I play Genuine now?
SPEAKER_02All his albums were dope. Hold on, hold on. Let me let me let me not say that. Nah, all albums were good.
SPEAKER_05Not the whole album. I won't say the whole album.
SPEAKER_02Once he left Timberlin, it started getting a little bit. Yeah. That's why I always say.
SPEAKER_05But he still got some good joints after Timberlin. But just not. Timberlin, just the magic key. That beat.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I know that was Timbalin's beat.
SPEAKER_05Just listen to it. You know who Timberlake.
SPEAKER_02That that has to be. Yeah, that's Timberlin.
SPEAKER_05That's a good one. I love that song.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that definitely was almost on my list.
SPEAKER_05Twenties.
SPEAKER_02That was on my list. Alright. You be having the up tempo.
SPEAKER_05Twenties. I be all over.
SPEAKER_02That's all right. I I guess I'm I like smooth RB. I don't know, but I listen to all RB. I'm a single.
SPEAKER_05I listen to everything too.
SPEAKER_02There's some Drake songs that's considered RB songs.
SPEAKER_05I listen to all music. I go over to the white side. I listen to white music. I love everything. That's good music. If it's good music, it's good music.
SPEAKER_02That that need to be a show.
SPEAKER_05Okay, we could do that next show. Yeah. White artists that we listen to.
SPEAKER_02White artists that you think we wouldn't listen to. That might be a good one.
SPEAKER_05Because I got some joints there.
SPEAKER_04I'll be like, you listen to that? Sure do. I sure do.
SPEAKER_02I got one. I'm not even gonna say it on the air now because I'm gonna use it on my list.
SPEAKER_05Okay. All right. Save it for your list.
SPEAKER_02Well, this the song is one of my favorites. And I'm not gonna mess the name up. I'm gonna let you say the name.
unknownWhy am I gonna say the name?
SPEAKER_02You don't know this? Let us see. Okay, I guess so. Let you mess it up.
SPEAKER_05Let me mess it up.
SPEAKER_02Pieces of me.
SPEAKER_05People just don't know what I'm about. They haven't seen it. I wouldn't even think you would listen to this.
SPEAKER_04There's so much more mega.
SPEAKER_02You hear that song? You hear that voice?
SPEAKER_04Well, it looks like I'm up sometimes on that.
SPEAKER_05Up here singing it, everything else. I'm singing it, yeah.
SPEAKER_02This is another one of those ones. If it's on, I probably will listen to it. And her name is Let us see.
SPEAKER_05Is that how you say her name? Yeah. That's how I hear people say it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, so you know her.
SPEAKER_05I've heard uh.
SPEAKER_02Okay. 2011, Pieces of Me. I've heard so many different people have songs named Pieces of Me.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's like a uh popular um title.
SPEAKER_02It is. I thought it was you know, I thought uh it was bugging out, but I think that is.
SPEAKER_05Alright, what you got? Okay, this joint, I hope we aligned. Um, 1993 intro.
SPEAKER_02Uh I I think I think the list kind of jumbled up when you sent it to me.
SPEAKER_05Hold on. It's a remake of a Stevie Mund classic. And I love this song. They he Stevie did it good. Like most of the times the remake don't be better. I think I like the remake better. I don't know. I hate to say that.
SPEAKER_02I think uh this was this was gonna be on my list also.
SPEAKER_05Really? I'm lying.
SPEAKER_02This or their other song.
SPEAKER_05What? Coming time?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05They had a good album.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they did. Oh well, I wouldn't say that.
SPEAKER_05Okay. They had some good joints on the album. I'll say that. Because I didn't listen to all the songs on it, but they had a couple of joints.
SPEAKER_02So what's the song you said?
SPEAKER_05Ribbon in the Sky.
SPEAKER_02Is uh Stevie Wonder remake.
SPEAKER_05Stevie Wonder remake.
SPEAKER_02A friend of mine's mother used to love this song. And I guess I ended up liking it too at the time. It's a good one.
SPEAKER_05We don't never have the same songs.
SPEAKER_02I'm always trying to think out of the box. Crazy songs.
SPEAKER_05They did this justice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they did. I like this one better than that one.
SPEAKER_05I like it better.
unknownOh solo.
SPEAKER_05And Stevie gave his approval because he was on the office.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow. So what's that? 1993?
SPEAKER_0593.
SPEAKER_021993. Intro. Self-titled album.
SPEAKER_05Um ribbon in the sky. They also had songs like uh Come Inside, Let Me Be the One.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you remember Let Me Be the One used to be on All Mixed Tapes.
SPEAKER_05I used to love that song. That's one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_02That used to be on All Mixed Tapes.
SPEAKER_05Let me be, let me be the one. That beat was crazy.
SPEAKER_02Ron G's uh Doo Wop album. Not do-wops. Ron G's, who else? Oh my gosh. Kid Capri? Yeah, Kid's Capri. Definitely, definitely Kid Capri.
SPEAKER_03Uh Let me be the one that you come with. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02This was the joint. I'm just throwing it on just because it's because it's, yeah. Yeah, that was a big one.
SPEAKER_05That was one of my favorites. That could have that could have hit the list. Y'all don't know this song. Y'all don't know um classic RB.
unknownI wanna be the one.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. This this was hot back then. I still listen to this sometimes now.
SPEAKER_02That was a mixtape.
SPEAKER_05I mean staple.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that was the first song on a lot of mixtapes at one time. And you know, if you the first three songs on the mixtape.
SPEAKER_05You know you it. That was the popular side.
SPEAKER_02This song made hip-hop mixtapes. Not just like a RB mixtape. This had hip-hop mixtapes too.
SPEAKER_05Because they would like to um blend it with other songs.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. They'll cut it up at polo, a cappella.
SPEAKER_05They need to bring mixtapes back.
SPEAKER_02I got them all. What do you want?
SPEAKER_05I'll come up like with the new stuff. Mix up the new stuff. I don't think. Maybe I would like the new stuff more.
SPEAKER_02You're right. You're right. Get some of them DJs. Yeah. But them DJs don't even like, you know, some of the DJs, they're still on like lives and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_05But mixtapes was how you found songs that you probably would never hear.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I heard a lot of songs that I probably would never hear on mixtapes.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Really? That's that's how 50 Cent got so big.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Mixtapes. He had songs like he was remake remixing songs like that, the RB songs, stuff like that. He was. I almost want to put him as the king of RM, uh, the king of mixtapes.
SPEAKER_05You want to?
SPEAKER_0250 Cent era?
SPEAKER_05I ain't gonna talk about 50 Cent though.
SPEAKER_02Why?
SPEAKER_04Because I ain't won't coming for me.
SPEAKER_0550 Cent don't play.
SPEAKER_02I love 50 Cent. I do too. 50 Cent is good. Alright, we're gonna get into mine.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_02Uh mine is a featured song. And I think I like it so much because of this artist that's on the feature. Um, this is Kelly Price. Not my daddy, feature Stokely.
unknownI think this is a good one.
SPEAKER_05Come on, stop. I ain't never heard this.
SPEAKER_02You definitely heard this. Late at night. This is on.
unknownI am the lady of your world.
SPEAKER_022011.
SPEAKER_03And I love me from Kelly Price.
SPEAKER_02Kelly Price. The name of the album is Kelly.
SPEAKER_05I like Stokely. Anything I'll keep on.
SPEAKER_02Anything Stokely. Yeah. He could have made my list three times.
SPEAKER_05And I didn't put him on my list either.
SPEAKER_02So if you don't know who Stokely is, Stokely is the lead singer of RB Game. Mean Condition. Yep. Yep, yep. So that's it. Uh Kelly Price, 2011. The name of the song, the name of the album is Kelly. The name of the song is Not My Daddy featuring Stokely. Stokely. Alright, what's your next one?
SPEAKER_05Okay. This song, I love the song. This is one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_02Is it with all the people?
SPEAKER_05No, it's with one person.
SPEAKER_02Go ahead.
SPEAKER_05Is we on we on the same page?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm just gonna go. I'm gonna shoot away after you.
SPEAKER_05Okay. This is one of my favorites. She has some good albums. You can listen to this, and if you're mad at your man, it's gonna make you even madder.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh, there's no way.
SPEAKER_05And it's called The Worst from the album Sale Out, and it's Jennai or Janae Aiko. Okay, so 2013.
SPEAKER_02You can mess up names too, then. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Everybody can mess up names.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I thought it was just me. This definitely would have been a mixtape, too.
SPEAKER_05This would have.
SPEAKER_02Do they do they had to have some remixes for this song?
SPEAKER_05I think they do. I think they have one with somebody rhyming on it.
SPEAKER_02I can hear fabulous on it.
SPEAKER_09Tell me what you sing now. Tell me what you say come again. If you cannot stay down, then you do not have to pretend like there is no way out. I should have never let you in.
SPEAKER_05I be in a whole zone when this song comes on. Don't don't talk to me while my song is on. Cause I'ma be singing along.
unknownAnd although it hurts a no one.
SPEAKER_02Okay, that's a good one. Yeah. I like that one.
unknownI just can't keep running away.
SPEAKER_02I like that one.
SPEAKER_05You're the worst. If somebody tells you you're the worst, you're the worst.
SPEAKER_02I say it to people all the time. Like if we play in pool or something, you're the worst at this game.
SPEAKER_05Really? Nah. That's the lowest.
SPEAKER_02The worst?
SPEAKER_05I ain't never gonna be the worst.
SPEAKER_02The worst.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna be the best.
SPEAKER_02The worst. Now.
SPEAKER_05You're the best.
SPEAKER_02Since we're saying the worst, there is a song called The Worst. With Onyx. Kill us in. And I think somebody else. Method Man. And I think that was. I think so. They had a video with Killers in on top of the car. I'm gonna have to look it up, but let us know. Um if you know the song. Alright, I'm gonna get back into mine. This artist here. Stokely. The name of the song is she. And the name of the album is Stokely. He definitely could have made the list like a couple times.
SPEAKER_06And the look can be magic.
SPEAKER_02Let me see if I can.
SPEAKER_06Every day it gets better. If you could hear her and talking about the way she walks, you know the queen is her.
SPEAKER_02I think this was just a single. It wasn't on the album. 2019 by Stokely.
SPEAKER_05So there was no album.
SPEAKER_02I don't think so.
SPEAKER_07It's because they designed without even trying.
SPEAKER_02I get in like a zone. Like I listen to certain stuff over and over.
SPEAKER_05I see. You're like a lover boy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know. I'm pretty and all that. I know. I know.
SPEAKER_05I've been in love voices over. You don't see too many men listen to RB like that.
SPEAKER_02Oh nah, I'm in it. I'm in it. Shoot, shout out to my man Jazz.
SPEAKER_05It's refreshing.
SPEAKER_02Jazz, he was an RB. He's an RB person too. He loves RB. Um, all right. What's yours?
SPEAKER_05Okay, my next one. I'm gonna say this again. It's a a group of people.
SPEAKER_02A whole bunch, a whole bunch of people.
SPEAKER_05It's a whole bunch of people.
SPEAKER_02When this came out now.
SPEAKER_05It's Quincy Jones, L. Dabarge, James Ingram, Barry White, and I'll be sure. This song. Tell me a secret.
SPEAKER_02When this came out now.
SPEAKER_05This song probably got a lot of people pregnant.
SPEAKER_02I don't know about that part now.
SPEAKER_05I'm just saying. It's Secret Garden, 1989.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_02Who's your favorite on there?
SPEAKER_04El DeVars.
SPEAKER_02Me too. Yep. Yep. El DeVarge. Now.
SPEAKER_05Let me lay beside you.
SPEAKER_02What year this came out?
SPEAKER_051989.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so when this came out. I wasn't listening to this. I was listening to Big Daddy Kane and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_05I was listening to this when it came out.
SPEAKER_02But my dad had the CD. And I was playing that.
SPEAKER_05I was listening to it because they used to play the video all the time.
SPEAKER_02The video's dark and grainy though.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
unknownCome on, come on, come on, come on.
SPEAKER_02Listen to your I want to play this whole song because there's so many different people on there. Do the barrel.
SPEAKER_03We could sing together.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you don't know who you like more. Well, I like this part, and then this other person comes. You're like, ooh, they are good too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's a good one. Who's that? James Ingram? James Ingram. Certain, see, back in the day, certain people's voice, even if you didn't know them, you knew that voice. You knew the voice. Like, I never listened to James Ingram songs. Well, nah, I probably did, but I didn't know that with James Insights.
SPEAKER_05I was listening and you didn't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But when you hear that voice, like, who's that? James Ingram?
SPEAKER_05That's a joint right there.
SPEAKER_02That's crazy. Yeah, that was a classic.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna listen to that too. I'm gonna listen to the whole thing.
SPEAKER_02The whole album?
SPEAKER_05No, just the whole song.
SPEAKER_02Oh, because that album, the album was back on the block, right?
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm. Back on the block. Quincy Jones.
SPEAKER_02I think he had a couple other songs. I think Big Daddy Kane was on the album.
SPEAKER_05I don't know if I even listened to the rest of the songs.
SPEAKER_02I listened to it because, like I said, it was it was at the house. So I like that song. I think Big Daddy Kane had a song on that.
SPEAKER_05Should I listen to the Big Daddy Kane song? Uh, don't know. You don't remember?
SPEAKER_02I don't even know if it's really a Big Daddy King song on it. But I think there is. I think there is. And it's gotta be a reason. It gotta be a reason I listened to that, to that uh CD. Matter of fact, let me skim through it real quick.
SPEAKER_03I got the secret key.
SPEAKER_02Alright, Tevin Campbell got a song. Yeah, Big Daddy King do. Big Daddy Kane and Kumo D on the same song.
SPEAKER_05What was Tevin Campbell's song? Round Around?
SPEAKER_02No, you know Tevin Campbell. He probably made it uh tomorrow. A better you tomorrow.
SPEAKER_03A better you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownA better me.
SPEAKER_02And Back on the Block. Back on the Block was the song I used to listen to. Because it was Big Day Kane, Ice T, Kumo D, Mellie Mel, and Tevin Campbell.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02And it was like a up tempo back on the blocks. Whatever, whatever it was.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02Yep, yep. Alright.
SPEAKER_05Well, it's your turn.
SPEAKER_02I'm back in the smooth. Smooth RB is me. Here we go. Kiki White. Nothing in this world featuring this world.
SPEAKER_03Avant.
SPEAKER_02Avant.
unknownI can picture.
SPEAKER_022001.
SPEAKER_05Avant is my homeboy. I love me some Avon.
unknownAnd you're telling me you loving me.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. They all cook good together.
SPEAKER_02They do, because they got another song together, too.
SPEAKER_05My first love.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_09And they've on your face. So tonight we're going on the biggest thing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think it's her her voice.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it is. She has a nice voice.
SPEAKER_02I get uh strange looks whenever she pops up on the TV at the house.
SPEAKER_05Oh.
SPEAKER_02Because I'm looking.
SPEAKER_05You're looking. Because you know what? She light skinned. Is that why? She's light-skinned.
SPEAKER_02That ain't why.
SPEAKER_05She real light-skinned.
SPEAKER_04It's okay. It's okay to say you like the light-skinned ladies.
SPEAKER_02I'm not saying that. I'm not, I'm not saying that. Shoot. I like. Am I allowed to say I like all ladies? I like chocolate.

SPEAKER_05I ain't popping no shit. I don't have one in a possible.
SPEAKER_02So, alright. Nah, nah, I ain't gonna say this crazy stuff I'm about to say. Go ahead. Okay, is it is it my turn? Yeah, it's your turn. Okay. Break it down.

SPEAKER_05The self-title. I don't know. Just the only song I listened to.
SPEAKER_02Was that 2001?
SPEAKER_052002.
SPEAKER_02Oh. It might be one.
SPEAKER_05This song I have you wanting to give somebody 25 reasons. I need somebody to give 25 reasons to.
SPEAKER_02You gotta what's the age range?
SPEAKER_05I took up 8 to 80. Dumb crippling crazy. Okay. Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You're gonna get in trouble with that kind of thought.
SPEAKER_05Listen to that.
unknownI love the way you cook for me.
SPEAKER_02I like this song. I do remember this song. This was on mixtapes, too.
SPEAKER_05I can give you 25 reasons why I'm never leaving you. 25 reasons.
SPEAKER_02Oh, so she does that through the whole song. Yeah, I do remember this.
SPEAKER_05She giving her 25 reasons.
SPEAKER_02She had a run.
SPEAKER_04Even though I got my own money.
SPEAKER_02Nivea had a had her run. She had a run. Alright, um, where we at? We on my we on you. Alright. So, like I told you, Genuine is uh one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I hope it's a song I like too. But you guys don't want to be bothered.
SPEAKER_02The name of the song is I'll do anything, or I'm sorry. It's off the bachelor album. Um 1996.
SPEAKER_05You can't get a little bumping grind.
SPEAKER_02I used to play this over.
SPEAKER_05I used to play this song all the time too.
SPEAKER_02The video was fun.
SPEAKER_03It's a good one.
SPEAKER_04I don't wanna accept the fact that you're no longer.
SPEAKER_02This video was fun. Had a Leah in it, uh, Missy, Timberlin.
SPEAKER_05But you know, all their videos usually have the whole family in it.
SPEAKER_02This was it.
SPEAKER_05I'll do anything, anything you want. Yeah, that's a that's a good word.
SPEAKER_02That's one of my favorites, right there.
SPEAKER_05That's one of my favorites. I'm telling you. Ah, sweet twinsies. I'm telling you.
SPEAKER_02Twinsies between genuine and and I probably have to say Jodice might be at the top of my list. Any list you give me.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I know Joe D going to do it.
SPEAKER_02Jodice RB groups, number one, probably. For me. I'm not counting temptations and all of that. Jodice was my era. So that's where it starts. That's where your era started at Joe D? It gotta be. I don't think I listened to any other RB groups before them. I'm not gonna say eh. New edition, cool, but Joe Dice to me.
SPEAKER_05I like some old school groups too, like the OJs.
SPEAKER_02See, I can't put them in front of Joe to see each other. They have some joy crazy songs, but Joe Dice.
SPEAKER_05I just love Joe to see. I don't know. It's just something about Joe D. I can listen to they like put their CD in and just let it play.
SPEAKER_02Yep, it hit different.
SPEAKER_05I um I guess I'm on my last one.
SPEAKER_02You on your last one?
SPEAKER_05All right, well. We on the same page here. Is we breaking down?
SPEAKER_02Before you say the name, this this one right here, I had the single cassette single. So you know it's only on one side.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm. What was on the other side?
SPEAKER_02I played um The Roof. Nah, you know what? It may have been CD. I played this song to death.
SPEAKER_05To death? I played the song to death.
SPEAKER_02I had this, I had a system in my room at the time.
SPEAKER_05So this right here, you had the beats knocking?
SPEAKER_02I came down south and a cousin had a system in his car. He played this for me. And ever since then.
SPEAKER_05This is my song. This is one of my favorite Mariah Carey songs. It's Breakdown 1997 off the butterfly CD with Bone Thugs and Harmony.
SPEAKER_01Bone Thug, kill the Breakdown. Yeah, they killed this one.
SPEAKER_05Yes. I probably scratched out my CD playing this so many times.
SPEAKER_02I'm trying to think of the single. It was a single. This was like two songs on it.
SPEAKER_05I remember this because I borrowed it. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Immediately.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I love that song.
SPEAKER_02Breakdown.
SPEAKER_05Steady breaking me on down. That's a good breakup song.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah? That's a breakup song? I think the nigga be dancing to it more than.
SPEAKER_05I think so. I think that's a breakup song. Like, uh, I hate him.
SPEAKER_02I hate you.
SPEAKER_05I hate him. Don't call me no more. Steady breaking me on down.
SPEAKER_02Alright. It's my turn. Alright. This one right here is weird.
SPEAKER_05This is your last one?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, my last one.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02This one right here is weird because it's from a group. But it's not official. It's official group, but it's not official group. The feature on it is not official rapper. I'll just make it sound weird. Because it is kind of weird. The name of the song is uh Take It Wrong. By a group named TGT. Uh the name of the album is Three Kings. TGT is Tyrese, Genuine, and Tank. And this song is featuring Black Tie. If you know who Black Tie is, Black Tie is Tyrese. So he featured on the song twice almost.
SPEAKER_05So he's rapping on it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's rapping on it. 2013. This came out. This album.
SPEAKER_05I already got everything down and you're written down.
SPEAKER_02Now, if y'all listeners are listening and y'all want you know y'all gonna write in and send us some of your joints. Yeah, send us your joints.

Yeah, you can't just be like you got to have an iPhone. Don't text me if you got the green. I need to see a blue dot.
SPEAKER_05Don't listen to him. It don't matter what kind of phone you got.
SPEAKER_02My number is. I wonder if we put out a number where we get crazy calls. Yes, you would. I'm gonna try it one day with your number.
SPEAKER_05No, you ain't. My phone number got to be um clear for my boo to call me.
SPEAKER_02I'm not gonna say that.
SPEAKER_05Nas. Oh, you ain't gonna call me at any time.
SPEAKER_02We're not allowed to say that name no more.
SPEAKER_05Nas. You can call me anytime. Any time of night that you feel like you want to dial my number or get in contact with me.

SPEAKER_05I got some joints written down that I'm gonna listen to today.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man. Uh I might have to make a little playlist and really send it out. Alright, um, I'm done.
SPEAKER_05We're gonna have to do another one because I got a lot more.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think we do definitely gonna do a part two to this. Yeah. If you are listening and uh you think we need to do a part two to this, I think Yeah, you got to write us send an um email. Um, what else we um I guess we could come up with some other part twos and part threes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Of what we already did.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Because I got some more rap um songs too.
SPEAKER_02Which like which what you got in mind?

SPEAKER_02Yeah, let's do that. Alright, um, shout out to all our listeners also. Yes, I'm gonna do that. I love y'all, yes. We got an email, but I have to get to it. So we'll have it on next episode. Um we got a voice email, I think.
SPEAKER_05Um, girl.
SPEAKER_02It could be. Shout out to my people's in uh Florida, New York, uh, where else we got people's at? We got people across the waters. Yeah, Singapore.
