This week on Once Upon a Time in Music, it’s a full house as L and Cheryl Poison welcome two dope guests to the couch — DJ High Star from the Mandatory Overtime Podcast and returning favorite B Easy from the DJ Blaze Radio Show Podcast.

The episode kicks off with laughs, wild introductions, and a whole lot of cousin energy before getting into the main topic: “Do You Remember?” — a fun ride through childhood memories that today’s generation might not even understand. From Wendy’s salad bars, the Club car lock, free nights & weekends, My Buddy/Kid Sister toys, basement parties, rotary phones, and TV signing off at night, to cassette tapes, recording songs off the radio, lightning bugs, Tamagotchis, the cable box clock, Nextel chirps, and hearing the ice cream man coming down the street… it’s pure nostalgia back-to-back.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the same without the Kiss/Marry/Kill segment going completely off the rails — with everything from classic celebs to hip-hop legends getting thrown into the mix.

The laughs keep rolling, the memories hit hard, and the chemistry is nonstop, making this one of those episodes you’ll be quoting all week. Tap in and vibe out — and make sure you check out Mandatory Overtime and the DJ Blaze Radio Show Podcast too

SPEAKER_01

Once upon a time in music.

SPEAKER_04

I'm L.

SPEAKER_01

I'm Cheryl Poison.

SPEAKER_04

And we got guests today.

SPEAKER_01

We have uh a full house.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, we got a full house. We got neighbors stop by. We had cousins. We had them all stop by today. Uh, we got DJ Hot Star of Mandatory Overtime Podcasts.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, sir. Yes, sir. What's up, man? What's happening? What's happening? Yeah. Cheryl Poison. Pleasure to meet you. L. Same. Like I told you earlier, bruh, you look just as tall as you I imagine you two on camera. I just want to say pause, but a lot less body fat. It's more bouncer than like Jolly. I mean, a lot of the jokes that I made earlier on when I used to email y'all, I thought that you was a little bit more.

SPEAKER_04

Hold on, let me just get your shirt off. No, no. Alright, and we also have one of our other cousins from next door at DJ Blaze Radio Show Podcast. We have B Easily. Yo, what up? What up?

SPEAKER_05

And he's a returning guest. Yeah. Do I get like a um where do you get to be for being a returning guest?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, nigga. I'm in charge of the buttons today. Nah, but shout out to you, B.

SPEAKER_05

What's up? Shout out to you, man. Thank y'all for having me.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you for stopping by, man. Anytime, anytime.

SPEAKER_05

It's a lot easier doing a podcast when you don't gotta push no buttons. You just talk. Just talk, right? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I I might know what you mean sometime, but you know, today I'm pressing the buttons and I'm pressing all the buttons. Oh, hey, yo. Um, but what's what we talk about today? Today's episode is about what is it, Cheryl? Remember when?

SPEAKER_01

Things from your childhood that you that other people might not know today or might not remember.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, yeah, I got some good ones, I think. Some flashbacks. I think I got some good ones. Uh we got these two guys stopping in. They're gonna be uh adding a two cents. But um before we start off, High Star, man, what's up, man?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, what's happening? What's happening? I I first want to say uh listener of this show, when I when I discovered the show, it was because I was you know on DJ Blade's radio show podcast. Yeah. And uh it's like, nah, these is like two older cousins of mine, respectfully, respectfully, but I'm saying like um the music knowledge or whatever. And I think there was there may have been an episode, and Cheryl, you was just spitting. I just want to say it was an episode where you was, it was some, it was like an older song or something like that, and you were just spitting it like better than uh the rapper um of whatever song they was playing. I'm like, oh, I'm a homie. Protect hip hop. I'm a music lover, yeah. And I I think that I was I think I was bought into this earth to preserve hip hop culture, you know what I'm saying? So Cheryl Poison, me and you are here. Okay, sometimes L and his view, sometimes What do you mean? I'm just saying you could stray from protecting hip-hop, hip hop, I'm a boom bat, you know what I mean? Give me the the whole Drewski scheme.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, we don't like that. We don't like that at all.

SPEAKER_02

Real Nas type, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, I love it, yes. I always say Cheryl Poison, she's like, I don't I don't know where she remembers half the stuff she remembers. But some of the songs and stuff like that. Oh, you know that? Oh, that's why you my nigga. Yeah, that's why you my nigga. Um, well, let the people know where they can find you at, man. Where you where you be, well, what you do.

SPEAKER_02

So right now we are an audio only with mandatory overtime. So wherever you find your podcast at Audibly, so Spotify, Apple Podcast, of course, iHeart, you'll be able to find it there. Um on social media, mandatory, if you follow Mandatory Overtime, I want to say, or Mandatory OT, uh, you'll find our social media page, and then my personal social media is um at high star bars. So like the high star, like DJ High Star and then bars at the end.

SPEAKER_04

Word, word, man. Check him out. I definitely checked it out this week. I I I heard this latest episode, and I'm hooked, I'm in there now, man. I appreciate you, man.

SPEAKER_02

I appreciate you. You had a a couple weeks to learn the name or whatnot.

SPEAKER_04

Nah, you know what it was? A lot of times I'll be like, yeah, I gotta write it down. But I don't write it down. And sometimes I'll be like, yeah, I'll hit that nigga B and tell him. But I was like, nah, the B don't be how can I say it? Say it, say it with your chest. Nah, I'll say it for seven years from now.

SPEAKER_01

Don't start that, please. Don't start that.

SPEAKER_04

You know, you gotta put it in the vault. You gotta put it away. But um don't start that. All right, high star. You uh RB man or uh hip-hop guy? That's a hard one.

SPEAKER_02

Queens from Queens.

SPEAKER_04

Small little queens, right? Queens. Big Queens.

SPEAKER_02

You gotta put some respect on that hip-hop, man. Hip hop? Hip hop, yeah. I remember seeing my first pair of techniques, uh, new marks, yeah. You know what I mean? Falling in love with the graffiti, all that, yeah. Okay, hip hop, New York hip hop.

SPEAKER_04

All right, so since you said techniques, techniques or the new day and age of controllers.

SPEAKER_02

I'm uh okay, well, first to answer your question, I'll say the new, the new technology rain, right? Um in a certain certain products for pioneer, whatever. But to take it a step further, I am analog over digital.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I'm analog over digital as far as the energy that's in analog. Like it feels like certain records, it feels like, oh, I'm back in the lounge where they where they performed this at or the studio that they recorded it in. Like I could hear the cigarette smoke or something like that. You know what I mean? On the record. So I I like I love analog versus uh I never heard before, but I guess that's what it's like.

SPEAKER_04

You know, um, I'm definitely I I think I'm digital. I started on techniques. One of those ones, your uncle wasn't doing it no more, they was in the house. Hey, can I get those? So then I started DJing on techniques. But once the new marks came out, yeah, oh my gosh. And now that the um was it the rain, the the rain twelves are out for the fullest size. If you into full-size vinyl or you started on full full-size vinyl, it's a different thing, man. And just to not have to walk around with crates, not to, you know, because I carry records before. I've you know, oh okay, the song is on the back end of this record. Oh, you accidentally put the record on the wrong side. I don't know your age, but no, I'm following you. Putting that vinyl on, you gotta make sure it's that right side when you, you know, in the middle of a transition.

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_04

So that's where I started.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and when that industry started to change with the CDJs and then go into the controllers and stuff like that, it's similar to like uh, I feel like it's similar to like AI, like the beginning, or any technology, if you will, Tesla, cyber trucks, anything. When it started off, it was like a lot of okay, one side of the controller will work and then the other side go out, or this and that, like all these issues and stuff. But now as the technology and stuff has got more sophisticated, you you see less and less troubleshooting issues with you know what I mean, with the controllers or whatever like that. Take care of them and keep them in the coffin or whatever like that.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. That's dope, man. I could talk about DJ and stuff like that forever. Absolutely. B. Yo, what up, man?

SPEAKER_05

That much. You gonna ask me what I think about I'm about to ask you something.

SPEAKER_04

What you what you mean?

SPEAKER_05

I know you don't care about the hip-hop. You care about the DJs? Oh yeah, I started out with CDJ 1000s, man. Not the CDJs, man. C DJ 1000s, them pioneer jones, man.

SPEAKER_04

You know I skipped the CDJs? I didn't like them because carrying, I I I ain't gonna say carrying that booklet, but You mean the CD booklet?

SPEAKER_02

But what if you see like if your CD's skipping either? That's the thing.

SPEAKER_05

I have two. You have to make two of everything. Yeah, that's copies of CDs.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, that was my thing. Like, man, the CDs in my car scratch, so I know these shits are scratched. So I mean, that's the only the only reason I didn't do CDJs. CDJs was I loved it.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

RB or hip hop. Come on, man. Hip hop.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, of course.

SPEAKER_04

What do you mean? I don't know. I I find myself really listening to more hip hop than RB. I mean more RB than R. I was about to say more hip more RB than hip hop. Like I can sing a hip-hop song, but a RB song? I know them shit. Like new RB or old RB? Uh I'm gonna say I'ma say old. You know, cause some of the new stuff is cool, but I gotta get into it.

SPEAKER_02

I was about to say, how in tune are you with the newer artists that are out there? There's a lot of new names.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, not that, not that new. I I might catch wind of somebody, like uh guy named Jay J mean or something like that. Jasmine, J mean or whatever. I caught him off of TikTok and I like all this stuff. I'm a I'm a genuine fan. A lot of people wouldn't admit to that.

SPEAKER_06

Why not? Yeah, everybody likes G Wine.

SPEAKER_04

Wait, hold on down. We had a I heard a chuckle across the room. It was across the room over here. What, Gene Wine Not Good? Oh.

SPEAKER_05

Oh both of his songs. Well, you know.

SPEAKER_04

No, heat bangers albums. Yeah. And you know why? Because Timlin was there at the beginning.

SPEAKER_05

So he got My Whole Life Has Changed Since You Came. He got that song. No, he got uh He knows jeans. He got uh Pony Ain't None of Your Friend's Business. Okay, that's four.

SPEAKER_04

Hold on, I can keep on going.

SPEAKER_05

Go ahead, come on. Give me the seven. Stingy. Stingy. Mm-hmm. How'd that go? Anxious? Okay, anxious. Come on, man. That's what I just that was the first one I said. I I mean either way. You think he you think he uh so you like listening to Genuine third album?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, uh let me see what the third album was.

SPEAKER_05

I was joking.

SPEAKER_04

That got the nigga had old.

SPEAKER_02

So I'm trying to date everything, and it's like I'm a genuine album. One of your kids was born around one of the times Genuine album dropped.

SPEAKER_04

Uh yeah. 2000. So 100% tracks.

SPEAKER_02

Tracks.

SPEAKER_04

Uh yeah, one of them was. What's your favorite?

SPEAKER_02

Like Differences was a breakup song for me in high school.

SPEAKER_04

See, I don't like genuine for breakup songs. What is differences? How'd that go?

SPEAKER_05

Oh, that's differences. Oh, okay, okay. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

We were doing that in the movie. What's that on the second album? First album?

SPEAKER_04

Uh Differences.

SPEAKER_03

He's gonna tell you.

SPEAKER_01

Uh That probably was the second album.

SPEAKER_04

Uh I can let y'all know by the time we finish this uh episode. How about that? So Jane, uh out of all the names. Nah, it just it just popped in my head real quick. And Differences was uh my uh the life album, and that was his fourth album. Oh, wow. Fourth, okay. No, that was his third. His third album.

SPEAKER_02

Would you go and see him perform live today?

SPEAKER_04

I wanted to before he started doing that unk shit. But I think he's he knows what he's doing now. He knows when to use that unk shit and when to perform.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, at certain in front of what crowd, depending on what crowd. If I'm at a festival and there's a lot of younger little kids and stuff like that, he might go viral.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I don't even know why I brought Genuine up, but I'm an RB nigga. TGT, uh, go listen to that album. It's Genuine Tank and Tyrese. And I turned sideways just to see B Easy's face. I know TGT.

SPEAKER_05

That's why I was saying I I know these niggas, but I'd rather listen to Young Jeezy. Okay. All right, guys.

SPEAKER_02

Um favorite RB albums from high school right now. I'm dating myself, but it's part three and um JE Heartbreak.

SPEAKER_04

So mine gotta be genuine. The hotel, what is it?

SPEAKER_01

You mean Joe Disney? Um that with the show, the after party, the hotel.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, that was high school for me. That was high school for you? Yeah, that and the first one. Right? The first one I was still in high school. I think the first genuine? Well, in high school.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, Joe Disney, Jodice, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Charlotte, shout out to Charlotte. Jodice was probably like 112 or something like that. Uh well, peaches and green?

SPEAKER_02

No, but far that's like only you, the only you guys, maybe uh 97-ish, maybe. Faith or something like that used to rock.

SPEAKER_04

That was a yeah, that was a good one. That was a good one.

SPEAKER_05

None that R. Kelly wrote, though.

SPEAKER_04

So you so you skipped the first two albums.

SPEAKER_05

The first one. Not the second. I don't think. I don't think he wrote on the second one. I think Timlin was the second one. She was with Timlin on the second one.

SPEAKER_04

Once he hit with Timlin, it was over. She was a new artist.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I had to let her. I had to just treat her as my sister because Timlin said that.

SPEAKER_05

He said that? Yeah. He's weird. Exactly. Oh, now I know what you're talking about.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I know you're talking about, yeah, yeah, yeah. Cause he was looking at her. Yeah. Yeah, that's what you're saying. He was in love with her.

SPEAKER_05

Right, right, right.

SPEAKER_04

And the woman looked just like him. She must have that aura, because a lot of niggas say the same thing, right?

SPEAKER_02

Dane, Jay.

SPEAKER_04

They all loved her.

SPEAKER_08

Why you look at me?

SPEAKER_05

Like, dang my cousin or something.

SPEAKER_03

When you say Dang, bro. You said Jay. We both looked at you.

SPEAKER_05

Like, well. As long as that nigga ain't missing no kids.

SPEAKER_04

All right. Um, let's get into the Kiss Marry Kill segment.

SPEAKER_01

All right.

SPEAKER_04

And uh I got some good ones for you again this week.

SPEAKER_01

You never have no good ones.

SPEAKER_04

Last week you had all the chocolate. This week was all right.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you did have the chocolate. I liked me some chocolate.

SPEAKER_04

All the chocolate. Well, guess what? Is it is it is my am I going first or are you going first? You go first. All right, since it's uh chocolate season, I'm going for white chocolate this week. Uh Ben Affleck. Uh Kevin Costner. It sounds like white milk. And Johnny Depp. Do you need to see any of these pictures?

SPEAKER_01

No, I know all three of them. We're gonna go ahead and kill Johnny Depp off. You know what I'm saying? I like him, but he looked kind of dingy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

His teeth.

SPEAKER_01

He looked like a pirate. He looked dingy. I don't like that look.

SPEAKER_02

He looked like a pirate. He do.

SPEAKER_01

He does. He do. He played that part good, yeah. Definitely do look like the pirate. We're gonna kill him off. Okay, kill him. Ben Affleck.

SPEAKER_04

Or Kevin Costner. The bodyguard Kevin Costner now. Whitney liked Kevin Costner.

SPEAKER_01

Whitney, Whitney liked a lot of stuff that I don't like.

SPEAKER_05

She likes a lot of white. She likes white guys. There you go. Look at him.

SPEAKER_01

The wrong one, producer.

SPEAKER_03

See? A little bit tougher.

SPEAKER_02

And then uh then smoke cigarettes whenever you stress him out.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I don't like cigarette smoke because you're not about to smoke up my hair.

SPEAKER_02

Whenever you stress him out and slam the doors.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

He does slam the car door. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Get your ass in there. So we ain't gonna marry him because I have him stressed out.

SPEAKER_04

So you're gonna kiss him now.

SPEAKER_01

I'll kiss him. I ain't gonna slap him down though. And we're gonna marry Kevin. Because Kevin was getting that bread from um Yellowstone.

SPEAKER_05

Yellowstone.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. He was the father.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, the show. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

I'll go with that. Okay. What you got?

SPEAKER_01

Alright, I got you some good ones. MC Light, Roxanne Shantae, and Queen Latifah.

SPEAKER_04

These are all niggas.

SPEAKER_02

Yellow, yellow, yellow. What?

SPEAKER_01

Roxanne Shantae and Nitty?

SPEAKER_05

What is he talking about?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but Latifa titties. This guy knows what I'm talking about. Oh my god. Queen Latifa. Every title look pretty though.

SPEAKER_04

Wait, let me let me say how I wanna. Okay, go ahead.

SPEAKER_02

So doll of them niggas.

SPEAKER_04

We're gonna go with the tit. I mean, uh Queen Latifa. We're gonna kiss Queen Queen Latifa.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Okay.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Throw a motorboat in there.

SPEAKER_04

Nah, because I I just thought about um Cleo.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Kissing Cleo. But think about the common movie or um the Adam Sandler joint.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she dressed up nice. When she dressed up, she looks pretty.

SPEAKER_02

She was casted as Adam Sandler's love interest in the last joint. That was crazy, though. That was crazy.

SPEAKER_04

Why did they do that?

SPEAKER_05

Oh, she was, yeah. They was married.

SPEAKER_04

A basketball joint. Yeah, yeah. That was a great movie, too. All right, so Roxanne Shantae, I would have to kill her.

SPEAKER_02

Yo, watch it, bro. Queens. Kill Roxanne's Queens.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, because she's a little too rough. Her voice is annoying.

SPEAKER_02

She did tell she told Nas that she would fuck him up if he didn't come back to the building with nice raps or something like that. Yeah, kill her. She was she was big sister.

SPEAKER_04

Annoying voices is MC Light for me.

SPEAKER_03

Really? You hear it too much.

SPEAKER_04

Ain't no voiceovers or two voice. And next, I mean, I'm sorry, my voice is a little too deep.

SPEAKER_01

You ain't gonna talk about MC Light. I love me some MC Light.

SPEAKER_04

You know who her voice coach was?

SPEAKER_01

Who?

SPEAKER_04

The father of the for um what's their names? Uh Full Force. Oh, for real? Paul Anthony and Bow Legged Louis. That's their father was her voice coach. For uh rapping or for performing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It tracks. It tracks. That's why you here, did you know? That's why you here at the Once Upon a Time in Music. What do you mean, B? That's why you here bother.

SPEAKER_03

I'm about to say, not even the ones that are in-house party, not them.

SPEAKER_04

Nah, it's their daddy. He's the Joe Jackson of them. You know that daddy is his cousin Steve. Let me shut the two mics off. Cheryl Poison, it's us again. Nah, um, all right.

SPEAKER_05

B, what you got? I got one for Cheryl. Okay. You kind of stole my uh white thunder. Since y'all said I was doing like uh What we remember back in the day. Yeah. From older shows. We're not so old. Old dudes? Might be.

SPEAKER_01

Old dudes do love me, though. I can pull an old dude.

SPEAKER_05

You gotta make a decision. Tony John Wright. Tony Soprano. These fictional characters, man. Tony Soprano. What's the nigga name from Who's the Boss? What was his name? Tony Danza. Yeah, what was his character's name, though? Tony Danza. Yeah, that's his real name, ain't it? That's his real name is Tony Danzer. What's his character's name?

SPEAKER_01

His name or was Tony on the show.

SPEAKER_05

Tony Sabelli or something like that. Yeah, Mazabelli. Yeah, something like that. And then uh Dan from Roseanne.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I already know what she's gonna do.

SPEAKER_01

We killing Dan. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, because he's a little thick. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

I like him thick. You don't like blue-collar niggas? I like him thick, but he's a little bit too thick. You don't like blue-collar thick white niggas? We're gonna kill off Dan. Damn. I'm surprised.

SPEAKER_05

Dan put all that work in on Roseanne made all them kids.

SPEAKER_01

I really want to kill off Tony. I know you do, because we talk about Tony for three episodes. Because if I marry Tony, Tony gonna be out in the streets fucking on everything.

SPEAKER_05

Tony looks thick too. Tony is thick. But you like him like that though.

SPEAKER_01

I like him kind of thick. What? Tutti more than Tutie the Fruity.

SPEAKER_05

They probably could cook Italian food.

SPEAKER_01

We ain't gonna marry Tony. We'll just kiss Tony.

SPEAKER_05

Soprano.

SPEAKER_01

And we ain't gonna slop him down. And I guess I'm gonna marry Tony from Who's the Boss?

SPEAKER_05

I figured that.

SPEAKER_01

Because he's gonna cook and clean. I ain't gonna have to do no.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, he is a um. Tony Michelle. That's right, he's the maid.

SPEAKER_04

Michelle Michelle, that's it.

SPEAKER_08

Okay. Alright.

SPEAKER_02

Hot star, what you can will. With that van he used to drive. Alright, because I ain't wanna bully Cheryl Poison too much. So I got three for her, but then I got three for y'all as well. Oh shoot, okay. All right, so year three.

SPEAKER_01

You got me somebody good.

SPEAKER_02

Preservation of real hip hop, hip hop. Uh-oh. KRS one. Jesus Christ. Eric's yo. No, Joe, be easy.

SPEAKER_03

What's this? Be easy. Let me get this off. No, L. It's not. Jesus Christ. Let me get the three out before you try to judge.

SPEAKER_02

Because you could probably guess. Okay. All right. KRS1, Eric Sermon, and Chuck D. Uh oh. Damn, just trying to have some hip hop babies out here.

SPEAKER_04

Dad, you gave her all flops. You trying to give her.

SPEAKER_02

How fun is the game if you got it?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you got to have some bad ones. Okay, we're gonna kill off KRS one. Why?

SPEAKER_04

Dang, the teacher? You know why?

SPEAKER_05

Titha? You know why. He's not a good Titha. Plaque buildup, is that it? He's not attractive.

SPEAKER_02

He's talking like he's just First of all, my family has noses like KRS. So y'all we're gonna go only so far. I didn't say that.

SPEAKER_04

I didn't say his nose.

SPEAKER_01

I just say he's not attractive. I think he might be related to Ginger Body. But he's cool. He's cool, but he gotta go.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Okay. Purely off of aesthetics, you're saying.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Not for what he gives to the community and to young game.

SPEAKER_01

He gives a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Alright.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, what's the other two again?

SPEAKER_02

Eric Sternman and Chuck D.

SPEAKER_03

1989. A number. Another summer. Could you imagine getting in power with the fucking?

SPEAKER_05

You can't win. You can't win with a Chuck D. Can't win on it. Chuck D. Chuck D.

SPEAKER_01

So I'll kiss Chuck D. Oh, I'm never gonna win an argument.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, you're gonna win on.

SPEAKER_01

And I guess I'll marry Eric Sermon. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Smooth.

SPEAKER_01

He can make me some beats.

SPEAKER_02

There you go. The green eyed bandit can't stand it. Cats fruity loops. Alright, so y'all three is.

SPEAKER_04

Come on, Red Man.

SPEAKER_02

Marie, Maya, and Ashanti.

SPEAKER_04

Wait, who's the first one?

SPEAKER_02

A Marie.

SPEAKER_03

Yo, yo. That's contagious.

SPEAKER_01

You okay over there, B? He made it tough.

SPEAKER_04

He made it tough. A Marie is definitely gonna get. So if I marry her, I can kiss her, right? So let's.

SPEAKER_02

You know the name of the game, man. Now you play a severity. Let's marry her. Who?

SPEAKER_04

A Marie? A Marie. Okay. Because you get to do everything when you marry them, right?

SPEAKER_02

I don't make the rules.

SPEAKER_04

He's trying to, yeah. I want to be able to do everything. Yo, you said I'm predatory right now.

SPEAKER_01

Like he's been waiting on this. I have.

SPEAKER_04

You don't know how to do it. A Marie, why don't we fall in love, A Marie?

SPEAKER_01

Never has no crush or nothing.

SPEAKER_04

It's just one thing that got him tricked. That's the one. I can't, you know. You know. You know how Bill Cosby was about Lena Horn? He can't bring her up all the time.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. How Michael was about Diana.

unknown

There you go.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know about that now. That's a little different.

SPEAKER_03

But go ahead. So A Marie is a marriage. That's what I'm saying. Definitely.

SPEAKER_04

I want to be able to do everything. That's my wife. It's a strategy, man. I'm going to be able to do everything. A Marie. Alright, A Marie. Mary. Uh-huh. Boom. Go ahead. Who's the other one?

SPEAKER_01

Damn, bruh.

SPEAKER_02

It's Maya and Ashanti, man.

SPEAKER_01

Ooh.

SPEAKER_02

Ooh, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

He gave you three good ones. I had Maya. I had Maya before, right?

SPEAKER_05

You had Maya before? On um, I think Omar. Yeah, I gave him Maya. He didn't want Maya. Oh, hypothetically.

SPEAKER_03

That's just a hypothetically, because you made it.

SPEAKER_04

Alright, so this is a hard one here. I bet. Let's kill. Let's kill Don't kill Maya. Yeah, because she might be boring. Let's kill Maya. And I can't judge you. Ashanti.

SPEAKER_02

You had to make a choice, so I can't judge you, bro.

SPEAKER_05

I feel like I'm married already. I'm killing Ashanti. Oh no, I'm Amory. Which way though?

SPEAKER_02

Amory, Maya, and Ashanti.

SPEAKER_05

I'm killing Maya. Uh Ashanti.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm killing Ashanti.

SPEAKER_01

Why you want to kill Ashanti?

SPEAKER_02

Anything from the Nelly situation that showed you that you would want to kill her up?

SPEAKER_05

It was the way she was acting in that one video with her mama, and she came outside. She was like, I can't stand that. It was just redoing it. He was redoing the good salas. But it's that accent. Her accent can get annoying.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. You know. That's Glenn Cove, right? New York accent. Glenn Cove, Long Island. Strong Island, yes. New York accent. That accent can get annoying.

SPEAKER_05

Glenn Cove. I I kiss A. Marie. Yeah, kiss A. Marie. Um with the Just that one thing that give me tripping it as Mumbo Sauce. So it's a Mumbo sauce. Bring me Ben's Chili Bowl. Um and I marry Maya because Maya hasn't had sex in seven years.

SPEAKER_01

That's why I tried to tell? Um L.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I think she's lying though. I don't think she's lying.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think she's lying either. She got the glow.

SPEAKER_02

If he thinks she's lying, then that's a valid reason for him to choose not to. I think she's lying, man. She come in. I don't think she's lying. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I ain't. That's it.

SPEAKER_05

I wouldn't care if she had sex yesterday. No, Maya. No, I don't have to put the condom on. Don't worry. If you don't want me to use it, I'm sorry, Maya. Okay. If you don't want me to. Of course I'll do a handstand for you, Maya. Yeah, Maya. I'll marry Maya. Okay. And like he said, I get to do everything. Get to do everything. I get to do everything.

SPEAKER_04

Get to do everything.

SPEAKER_01

You was excited over there.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I was waiting for it. I still got one for you.

SPEAKER_02

I hope you ain't come up with this on the spot when I came up with the good ones. No, you know. Okay. All right. Go ahead. Jack A. Okay. I really like where we're going.

SPEAKER_04

You got my attention. Regina King.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

And this is the last one. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

First of all, I like to say Jack A. and Kim Whitfield. I always thought they were twin sisters coming up. I think it's Kim Whitfield. They do look alike. Yeah. But I think I've got I got company. I can't. I'm just saying Jack A is the first person. One of the first black women that's gotten me excited as a young Jake. Of course, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

She was sexy on 227.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the way that she's walking and all of that. Alright, let me get the all right. Alright, we're gonna kill Missy. I'm I'm sorry. And and God bless her in the music as well. She's sickly anyway.

SPEAKER_05

See, I didn't you staying on this. She's sickly anyway. Yeah, you playing the ready to do it. Oh my god. B, beat my jokes. I can't stand the rain. I can't say take you to the doctor on a damn time either.

SPEAKER_02

Oh seriously, seriously, she's stupid duper. Sickly. It was Jack A, and then who was the second one? Oh, oh, Regina King. Yeah. So um, yeah, I I mean I'll just I would I would kiss Jack A. Because it's been like uh that's more fantasy fetish side. And then because the geriatric would come out if any kind of clothes was removed or anything like that.

SPEAKER_05

But what if it's like her then, like that time dressed up, smelling like church.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um yeah, I I would kiss though. Kiss. If you marry, you get to do everything. That's the new rule.

SPEAKER_03

You are a problem, man. Everybody don't. And you said it that aggressively.

SPEAKER_02

But nah, I would marry Regina King uh just from the resume, the career resume, how diverse she is with the with the career than the voiceover, all of that talent.

SPEAKER_05

You know one thing about Regina King now though, is I don't know if I could like do anything with her like that because I would just I just feel like I would be having sex with Riley or Hewitt. Or Huey. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

What should she talk, right? Yeah, that's okay. You can't unhear it. You can't unhear it.

SPEAKER_00

Did she go through a tragedy or something like recently?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she lost her son. Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_05

It was her or was it uh Taraj? It was her. It was her. Okay. I always get that story moving. So what's the next one?

SPEAKER_02

What? The next person? Yeah.

unknown

What?

SPEAKER_02

I was Mary Regina. Yeah, Mary Regina King. So you're Ms. Jack K.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Exactly. Okay, that was a good one. That was a good one.

SPEAKER_01

All right.

SPEAKER_04

Are y'all ready? Is it time to get into it?

SPEAKER_01

I think it's his time.

SPEAKER_04

All right. Since I started first with the Kiss Mary Kill, you guys, you can start with uh Do You Remembers.

SPEAKER_01

All right. My first one is Do you remember Wendy's had a salad bar? Oh yeah. This was a long time ago. You remember that? We used to have family night at Wendy's all the time. Family night? Come on. For real? We would go, we would go out to eat somewhere every Friday. This podcast was shit. My mother and father loved Wendy's salad bar. So wait, you went there as like, yo, we're gonna find dining tonight.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Pizza Hut used to be like that too. I remember pizza hut. It's still like that.

SPEAKER_05

At the bar.

SPEAKER_00

Right? It's still like that.

SPEAKER_05

Some of them do sell it for lunch. They have the buffet for lunch. Oh, word.

SPEAKER_04

The bar. Dang, I remember that.

SPEAKER_02

And I think it's in my head, I always think, like, was my dad just pulling out a 20 and just, you know what I'm saying? Everybody feels like that. Exactly.

SPEAKER_05

I think so. But I mean, back then though, it you was making$2 an hour, though.

SPEAKER_02

Right, right. It's all relative.

SPEAKER_04

Daddy pulling out a 20. I because I do remember my mother asking for$5,000 gas.$5,000 gas.

SPEAKER_02

She wasn't like she had$5 to get you there. Half gallon might be a quarter gallon.

SPEAKER_01

Gas was like 79 cents. It was? Back then, yeah. Back when?

SPEAKER_05

I remember one day.

SPEAKER_01

Back when I was growing up.

SPEAKER_05

My senior year in high school, one day, my homeboy came to me and him cut class. He was like, yo, B, gas 89 cents on the street. Wow. We went and got gas 89 cents one day.

SPEAKER_04

That's crazy. That's crazy. All right, that was a good one. That was a good one. Yeah. That was a real good one. All right. So um I'm a. You know what? Let's go around. If y'all got a big one. Ruby Tuesday does it still. You got one, High Star? I got plenty. Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_02

So that's what I was saying. We're gonna do round robin.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah. B. All right.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna jump in. I'm gonna jump in. Alright, I'll hit y'all with this one. The club. Car safety, the club.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, that's still to them, though. Wallace got one of his car.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. Really? But nah, he got an expensive car too. He got a nice car. But like I'm talking, so you had the club, the branded the club, right? As seen on TV. Then you had the knockoff ones that wouldn't have the brand. Then they started making the one for like.

SPEAKER_04

Go across the steering wheel. Right.

SPEAKER_02

So then they had the one below the steering column, too, that'll like kind of, I guess, go to the break or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

You remember the club? Yeah, I remember the club. That was my weapon of choice.

SPEAKER_02

It was. I'm telling you. It was like two different parts, right?

SPEAKER_04

Hey, if I was out somewhere. Hey, I'll tell you the story. Quick, quick, quick story. You know, I first came down here, the club was still in. So I was in Bishopville at uh one of them hole in the wall clubs. I think the name of the club was called Hole in the Wall. And the guy, this guy, he was, you know, kind of talking shit to me because his girl said, Hey. So I'm like, you know, I'm from New York. I'm here by myself. No, I wasn't by myself. I was with like two other people, but I'm by myself. So I'm like, oh, okay, she's about to go down. I went to the car, got the club, and used the hook to go down my pant leg. I was ready. That was my weapon of choice, the club.

SPEAKER_02

That was my first one on the round, Robin. Hey, that was a good one.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, that was a good one. That was a good one. All right, let's see. How many of y'all remember free nights and weekends or penny nights and weekends? I remember penny nights on the minute. That was one of mine.

SPEAKER_01

I had that same thing.

SPEAKER_04

Yep, I had OmniPoint, and it was a penny a minute, um, nights and weekends.

SPEAKER_02

When's your nights? I don't remember that.

SPEAKER_04

Friday nights to six. Seven o'clock. Seven o'clock.

SPEAKER_02

Then like the competit, the competitive thing with the companies is start to bump it up. So it's like six.

SPEAKER_01

Because at first it was not.

SPEAKER_04

Exactly. Exactly. Yeah, free nights a week.

SPEAKER_01

That's crazy, right? Don't call me in the daytime. Call me at night.

SPEAKER_04

No, I'll call you later on tonight, man. Uh-huh. Or you look at the phone and be like, I ain't answering you. I ain't answering, yeah. Mess up my minutes.

SPEAKER_02

Now that I think about it, nine o'clock will be considered disrespectfully late to people.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah. Don't call me after that. You got a text first. That's because you got all the access now. You call whatever you want now. That's crazy. Yeah. That's crazy. That was one of mine's.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, those are some good ones. Mine was a little bit more childish. Go ahead. Um, it's kind of a quiz, but then I'm a you know segue into what it is. Y'all remember Kid Sister?

SPEAKER_04

Kid's sister? My buddy.

SPEAKER_05

There you go. My buddy, kid's sister. Yeah. Because my it really was my buddy. Right. Yeah. Then the commercial go to kid sister. Yeah, that was for, you know. So it had the song.

SPEAKER_08

Kid Sister. Kid Sister.

SPEAKER_05

That was it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Kid Sister and me. Tell it, my buddy. Tad of my buddy.

SPEAKER_05

Hell no. My mom won't buy me no damn my buddy. Your buddy, you need to your buddy outside in place.

SPEAKER_04

My mama. So well, y'all probably didn't have no cabbage patches.

unknown

Nah.

SPEAKER_04

I did.

SPEAKER_01

I did.

SPEAKER_04

My sisters.

SPEAKER_01

I had a load of them.

SPEAKER_04

My cousin had a cabbage patch. He was a guy. I might have to be a big thing. They had boy cabbage patches.

SPEAKER_05

They garbage pail kids. Remember those? The cards? The cards. They were never um like action. I mean like dolls or nothing. It was just the cards from the garbage pail kids. They still make them.

SPEAKER_04

For real? Yeah, they got, I think they're up to like the eighth generation or whatever. And I be watching them because a lot of people be selling the first geners that I want. I want the first or second gen. Of course. Another hobby.

SPEAKER_01

He collects everything. Everything.

SPEAKER_04

Put it in the vault. That's it. All right, Cheryl, what you got?

SPEAKER_01

All right. My next one is basement parties. I don't know if y'all had basement parties. But my family used to have basement parties. We'd be in there jamming. Come on, Queens. I think that's right.

SPEAKER_04

I think I might have to have some the reggae parties. Yeah. You just back on the wall. Yeah. Let them do what they do.

SPEAKER_02

And then so with that, it's funny you say it. I was telling you before the show started. I grew up in St. Albans, right? Around the corner from Hollis. And um my grandmother lives literally like around the corner from Walker's mom's family house, like Deb the Andes. Yeah. Shout out to Deb. So they used to go over there all the time. Or if they was my my aunt or my uncle, if they were watching us, they'll take us over there while they playing cards, drinking, whatever now, and and doing that all basement stuff. But in that suburb out there in St. Albans, like all of them houses, they got basements or whatever like that. And like houses, like people um would host, you know what I'm saying? Family and friends down there in the basement.

SPEAKER_04

All the time. The most dangerous parties ever.

SPEAKER_02

If you think about it, but it's just like you didn't get into problems in there. Cause that um scene out of um juice. Is that menace? No, the beginning with Samuel Jackson killed dude. They're not necessarily in the basement, yeah, but that those type of scenes is what I could picture in those Queen's basements.

SPEAKER_04

That was my house on the weekends. That was my house. That's how they look. Go back in the room. Yeah, yeah. You and your cousins. Then you hear them cursing out there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I used to hate waking up and my parents be gone. Like if we were at somebody else's house and they just let me sleep. I used to hate that shit. Leave me there. Yeah. They left you. Of course. That sounds traumatizing. Where's my mama? Just leave. Yeah. All right. Okay. All right, so where we at? Me? High star.

SPEAKER_02

No, high star. Alright, so I didn't know which way to go with this because it'd be easy brought up toys, but I'm I just gotta stay with the classic rotary phones. Shout out to my great-grandmother. Rest in peace. But yeah, rotary phones, it took like 10 minutes to dial.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, that was crazy.

SPEAKER_02

And I honestly, as a kid, I just used to play with the phones because like shows like Where in the World Is Carmen San Diego or different shows like that would have like that type of phone ringing or whatever. So I always would, you know what I mean, be playing around with the dial on the phone and stuff like that. Yeah, that's crazy, man. Yeah, shout out to the rotary phones, man.

SPEAKER_04

That and and calling. Calling and somebody else was on the phone. The busy signal? Uh-huh. Oh, yeah. Okay, okay, okay. Oh my gosh. The busy signal? He called back over and over and over.

SPEAKER_05

I mean when call waiting was like you had to pay for call waiting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was a luxury as like an exclusive thing. Have any of y'all ever used like the phone older than the rotary one? Like the real old Claire called, Johnny. I think it's like a horn-looking. Oh, I ain't never, I ain't that a checking.

SPEAKER_05

I've seen it on Andy Griffith. Right. Nah, I'll just check. How old do you think we are, nigga?

SPEAKER_02

I'm just checking. It was it was around when I was little. He tried to be slick. It was around when I was little. It wasn't when it wasn't.

SPEAKER_04

No, it was not.

SPEAKER_02

As antiques or something in a museum somewhere. But it was around in the 80s or the 90s. They was around. Nobody was using them, I'm saying, but they was around.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, okay. I was like, dad, this nigga This nigga think I'm Alexandra Campbell. Whose turn is it? Mine? It's yours. It's mine. All right. Y'all remember when TV used to go off at night? Oh, yeah. Oh yeah. 1201 after the honeymoon is after. I want to say it went off at like 11. Nah, it was 12 something. Honeymoon is used to come on like 11, 11:30. And 1201, that flag. It made a noise. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Right, right. Once cable really came, that you stand up.

SPEAKER_04

It never went off. Cable's still going since then. Never go off. That's crazy. Two. There is a um.

SPEAKER_02

Wasn't there uh because be easy, you talked about it on the show one time. Some lady that like a historian or like a black woman, I want to say, she documented, like she videoed the news or something like that for every day. Yeah, she documented something. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And she had all the tanks.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Yeah. You did bring that up once. Really?

SPEAKER_05

She had a whole lot of shit. I don't remember nothing.

SPEAKER_04

I remember what's called was there. Um what's her name? The other host.

SPEAKER_02

Amy?

SPEAKER_04

No, the other girl. Keith? No, damn. What's her name?

SPEAKER_02

Just recently. That's on the um, that's on the um, that's on the visual. It's on the visual.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, oh, uh, uh, uh, uh Corey Corey. Corey. There you go, Corey.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Really? It took all that for the sake of Corey. Corey.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, he was like another uh.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Um, I was thinking about when um when TV went off, or the early days of cable for me, like for whatever reason, talk suit, and like uh TNT used to have movies at night or something like that. I just used to we were talking about talk suit last week. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I remember that.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Yeah, talk suit was my show.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, that was a good one.

SPEAKER_01

All right, uh, who next?

SPEAKER_04

You got a Cheryl?

SPEAKER_01

Alright, my next one is playing outside all day. Like when I was little, we went outside and stayed all day till the street lights came on. Yeah, that was. Me and my best friend would ride our bikes. We'll be across town. No cell phone. No cell phone on Apple tracker. And my mother did not know where we was at.

SPEAKER_04

Was you out doing bad?

SPEAKER_01

No, I wasn't out doing bad, but you was riding bikes or you was riding bikes.

SPEAKER_04

I couldn't see riding bikes.

SPEAKER_02

The funny thing back then, we was like equipped.

SPEAKER_01

BMX? What?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I can't see it. It seemed like we was equipped with our parent with what our parents told us. So some some black kids that I knew, like, if there was like uh like say for instance potential danger, somebody that was dangerous, like the black kid would tell that person off because the way that they was raised up. You know what I mean? Yeah, get away from me. Ah, whatever, like that. More than anything else. But it was crazy back then. We ain't have no phones, no way to track nowhere just out in the world. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Who's a who's it who's it on? Uh hostile.

SPEAKER_02

Me, yeah. Uh I'm gonna go old school with it and shout out to shout out to intellectualism, but I'm gonna say card catalog.

SPEAKER_05

Card catalog.

SPEAKER_02

Card catalog, right? Hold on, hold on. Let it let it linger for a second. Card catalog. Like in the library? Yeah. Oh, he's going way back. You mean the do it decimal system? No. No, like in the library, we had card catalog, right? You had to look through, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you took it way back in the back. That's 80s, right there.

SPEAKER_02

I had to do it in the 90s.

SPEAKER_05

It was in school. I did it in the 90s. Yeah, it was in school.

unknown

All right.

SPEAKER_05

That's the Dewey Decimal system, man. No.

SPEAKER_02

What's a Dewey Decimal system? It's binary and like Dewey Decimal system uses. Numbers is to find the books, alright?

SPEAKER_05

No, that's it.

SPEAKER_04

It ain't nothing to do with books. Like calculating. Like the beads. Oh, really? Yeah, that's the communicate. The abacus. I think that's what it's called.

SPEAKER_01

No. Lord.

SPEAKER_02

I think I think I think Dewey Decimal is when they communicated across the water.

SPEAKER_01

So what's the Dewey Decimal?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. Exactly, y'all.

SPEAKER_04

Well, thank you, Google. That'd be knowing, Mrs. Google. So the card catalog.

SPEAKER_02

It was a combination with it. Dewey Decimal was on the card. Yeah, it was on the card. Yeah, it was on some numbers, was on the card. There you go.

SPEAKER_01

And you have to go find your book.

SPEAKER_02

Brandon wants to show everybody. He threw me off with that, man.

SPEAKER_03

He threw me. I thought the catalog.

SPEAKER_05

He thought it was a quite the Dewey Decimal.

SPEAKER_03

Wait, I guess it is the Dewey Decimal System with the city.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, he knows something. He knows a little something.

SPEAKER_04

I know a lot of us. Alright, the next one is uh cassette tapes. Do you remember a cassette tape? Like, if there was a song you liked, it wasn't in the middle. It was either on the beginning of the first side or the beginning of the second side.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

You you never really like fast forward to a certain song all the time.

SPEAKER_02

If I gave you if I gave you a cassette tape and a pencil, you gonna stick it in there with it.

SPEAKER_04

Oh.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, you got a winery.

SPEAKER_04

It doesn't came out of the case. Your tape then came out, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Around the end, though, they did come out with like players that like you could hit the certain fast forward, then it did a fast forward.

SPEAKER_04

But that was only songs that have spaces. If they didn't have the space, it wouldn't stop. Yeah, I got one of those. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's when my DJ career started, really, because my mother had uh boom box where one side was regular play, one side was dub. Yeah. So I put the cassette in there. And for whatever reason, the speaker would pick up my voice too. Okay. So I could feel like like in the in the radio. Like for whatever reason. When I press record, I'm I don't know, yelled into it. And so I used to have my little uh take my songs from what funk master flex or what they was playing on um hot 97 or whatever, and make my own little mixtapes. Oh word, word. I got one, y'all.

SPEAKER_05

Go ahead. Do y'all remember the do-it this one? Car Kelloway. Oh, Car Cowboys.

SPEAKER_08

In the libraries?

SPEAKER_01

In the library?

SPEAKER_04

Libberry.

SPEAKER_01

Libberry? Nah. Following up with y'all with the cassettes, do you remember recording stuff off the radio?

SPEAKER_04

Oh, yeah. Of course. I remember recording the Fat Boys had a live concert on the radio. Wasn't no cussing back then on the radio.

SPEAKER_02

Or like um like 84, 85. The end of the 90s toward the beginning of the 2000s, it was a thing to catch flex and web freestyles or whatever like that, and get them recorded on there. Like so um J be like, get your tape decks ready.

SPEAKER_00

He's only 16.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, all of that. That those the times where I was uh close to the radio and everything like that, ready to press record.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, word, word, word. All right, who's it? Who next? Cheryl?

SPEAKER_01

Is it on me? Yep, yep. All right, um, I'm gonna go way back. Catching lightning bugs. Y'all record lightning bugs and you put them in the jar?

SPEAKER_04

That's on my thing. That's on my body. Really? Lightning bugs in New York. Like, ain't no more lightning bugs. Lightning bugs in New York? No more. That was the thing. Eight at seven o'clock, you go in and catch lightning bugs.

SPEAKER_01

Uh you put them in a little jar, you poke the holes in the top. More country than you got. And it had like a distinct smell. I like I hated the smell of them. But yeah.

SPEAKER_04

It smelled like ladybugs. You ever smell ladybugs?

SPEAKER_01

I don't think it smelled like ladybugs. Ladybug got a smell?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Touch a ladybug, have a ladybug in your hand, and let it go in the smell of you. Wow boy. I can do anything.

SPEAKER_05

Smell your finger. Do anything? Look, smell it.

SPEAKER_01

Wow boy. So that was mine. Okay. Lightning bugs. Lightning bugs.

SPEAKER_04

That was those are crazy. They don't even make those no more.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think so.

SPEAKER_04

I think they just leave the high star on this one.

SPEAKER_05

They distinct. They're distinct. No, go ahead. Go ahead. I'm believing the collector.

SPEAKER_04

Was it chemsprays? The chemtrails? Chemtrails got rid of the lightning.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Most definitely. Most definitely. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Absolutely. I mean, if y'all want to go there.

SPEAKER_01

I've never seen them down here. When I moved here, I never saw them.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, they you'll see one or two per summer.

SPEAKER_02

That along with the fluoridation of the water out there in New York, man. But we won't get that started, man. Yeah, man. Floridization of the water. Conspiracy, bro. Come on. All right, I'm next. Yeah, you're next. All right. Um this is a quick one. It's showing my age still, though. Uh Tamagotchis. Tamagotchi's. Oh, those cards? Nah. Okay, that's a good one. That's Yu-Gi-Oh!

SPEAKER_01

Was it like a little box thing here?

SPEAKER_02

It would vibrate if they took a ship. You had to take care of it like a baby. You had to take care of it like a baby. It's a digital. Gigapets? That is well. Yes, yes, yes. Gigapets was after Tamagotchi, though. Yeah, yeah. And Tamagotchi might have been New York centric, like, because so I grew up in Chinatown in Queens as well. Like outside of St. Albans, I grew up in Flushing. So I had all the Koreans and Chinese people around me. So the Tamagotchi might have been their Korean brand of the Gigapet. In other words, like Gigapets came in. That's what I'm thinking in real time right now, because he ain't never, you know what I'm saying? It's not familiar to everybody if they if you just say Tamagotchi. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

It was like Tamagotchi.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but it was electrical. Tamagotchi. Three buttons on it. I got the black ones. Gotta feed it every day. If you didn't feed it a cry or whatever, you neglecting it. And then if it took a shit and you ain't changed it or something, it would vibrate and stuff. That's crazy. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_04

Alright, I got one. What I know everybody used to go by this. The time on the cable box. Or VCR.

SPEAKER_02

Cable. I was just I actually was gonna say, I was just gonna say cable box period earlier. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But just having a cable box.

SPEAKER_04

That was the time in your house. That's how you knew what time it was. Or absolutely. Or don't say it. What? The stove? Clocks. Nah, they didn't go by that. They didn't go by the clock, clock. Clocks always wrong.

SPEAKER_05

Nah, the stove did do the stove. So one it was my senior in high school. We used to get out early or whatever, me and my homeboys. You know what I'm saying? Before practice. So we'll chill at my house. My stepsister and her homegirls had cut. They was in middle school. They could walk to the house and they're like, what y'all doing here? Like, we cutting whatever. You know what I'm saying? So we changed the clock and made the time like go back. Oh. They was gonna go back to school at a certain time. Yeah. So like it was like maybe one o'clock in real time. I changed the clock back like an hour and a half. So they were looking at the clock on the stove. Thinking that it was thinking they had more time to get back to school. I was like, Y'all better go back to school. They was like, wow, it's such and such a clock or whatever. I say, Yeah, go look in the uh go look at the cable box. And they would have looked at the cable box and they went busting out of house, whatever you have. I got stuff messed up.

SPEAKER_02

So are y'all is one of two types of people. Are y'all A or B? A is the one that daylight saving time comes around. You're gonna go ahead and adjust your clock or whatever, like that. Or B, just and wait till the whole next year.

SPEAKER_01

Which I'm A. I'ma change it. Okay. Yeah, I used to change it.

SPEAKER_02

Listen, I used to change it. Well, y'all come to my car when we finish up. So yours is an hour ahead?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I do got a couple watches that's off.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, my but yeah, my Apple watches and my regular like Invictors and stuff, the going off here and there. But I think in COVID, they they co-opted time in COVID during COVID, anyways. Oh shit. Oh Lord. They gained it and then they took away a second from us.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

A second a year makes a difference, man.

SPEAKER_05

When you plan on going across the ice wall. Pole the pole with Will Smith, man. Hey, yo, watch out now. It's all kind of monsters and stuff across the ice wall. Animals you ain't even seen before.

SPEAKER_04

Time is different too. If you would like to hear more of DJ High Star's uh conspiracies, go to Mandatory over time. Mandatory over time.

SPEAKER_02

I just encouraging me to be myself.

SPEAKER_05

Alright, it's my turn, right?

SPEAKER_01

No, let's be got one. Nah.

SPEAKER_05

I just like uh clowning on the wind job. Next tells.

SPEAKER_04

The Nextel chirp ruled the world. It did.

SPEAKER_02

Until Blackberries came.

SPEAKER_04

No, until no Blackberries was before, but Nextel, especially if you was in the regional, I think. Okay. Yeah, it was regional. If you're in the motorcycle world, okay. Oh my god. Okay, okay. And because a lot of people they couldn't get Nextel because the credit had to be right and everything to get on. But Boost came out. And Boost was able to click to the to the Nextel chirps. Yeah. It was over.

SPEAKER_05

Nextel, Nextel really didn't hit no head until uh sprint about Next Hel. That's what I'm saying. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, we were going 2000, let's see, let's say like 99 to like 2002.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, my sister, yeah. And I see by that time I had moved down to uh Charleston, so when I was going back up to visit, that's all my sister had. Nextel and chirping.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, man, next tirps.

SPEAKER_02

But I think like to your point, it depended on the industry or what what you did, like what your functionality for your phone was. Yeah. Because them joints was rugged too. Yeah, they was really rugged. It was built for construction workers and stuff like that. Yeah. We turned them around just like Timberlands.

SPEAKER_04

Yep. Yeah. All right, Cheryl, what you got?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I got the ice cream man.

SPEAKER_02

Mr. Softy Pole.

SPEAKER_01

You hear that song? You running inside. Yeah. Ma I need a dollar.

SPEAKER_05

Oh. Hey.

SPEAKER_01

Ice cream man. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That was a good one. What was one of your favorites from the truck?

SPEAKER_01

What I would get all the time is a vanilla cone with sprinkles.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, yeah. That's a little queen's go-to right there. Orange.

SPEAKER_01

And if somebody else was treating, like sometimes the older guys on the block, they would treat all the kids the ice cream. I'm gonna get a double. I'm gonna get the drug dealers. I'm gonna get vanilla sprinkles on one side and I'm gonna get the um cherry little.

SPEAKER_02

I was a ninja turtles dude with the gumballs or the orange push pop.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, you remember the ninja turtle joints? You remember the WWF joints?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, my pops, he was so I when I would tell kids in school, it's like, yeah, my dad's an ice cream man. He was he was actually delivering two bodegas and stuff in Brooklyn. So he had like the the cold truck, the refrigerated truck. But I was sick. He wasn't the ice cream man. That's what I'm saying. But when kids ask me in school, hey, what's your dad? Oh, he delivers ice cream.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, he's an ice cream man.

SPEAKER_02

Ice cream man. So yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Now you tell somebody that I'm the ice cream man. Oh, he ain't making no money.

SPEAKER_04

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_04

All right, Cheryl. Um, who's that? It's on hot side, huh?

SPEAKER_02

All right. No car catalog this time, yeah. Hold on. Okay, all right, here we go. Crown air fresheners.

unknown

What?

SPEAKER_08

Huh?

SPEAKER_02

So there was like, yeah. Oh, yeah. They used to go on the bash. Or in the dash. But um you know, with black people, we'll find out like who's racist or whatever like that. There was a rumor that went out that their company was made by like KKK members or something like that, or the product itself was made by like Ku Klux Klan or something like that, and people just stopped. I stopped seeing them in the back of Cadillacs and Lincolns and stuff.

SPEAKER_05

In the back of a Lincoln no more. They did that with Snapple too. They said it was like uh KKK in the Snapple bottle on a bottle or something, and it was a rumor going round that it was racist. That's crazy. Crown hair freshness, dog.

SPEAKER_02

That's crazy. Crown hair freshness. You could put crown royal bag with that, I guess. That would go hand in hand in the old bag.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you know, black people love a crown royal bag.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Yeah, everybody got them. Everybody got them. All right, it's my turn. Um TGI Fridays. The TV lineup. Oh, I thought you were talking about the restaurant. I'm about to say, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Nah, the dog. Family Matters. What else?

SPEAKER_02

Step by Step. Step by Step. Full House. Like, there was different iterations of TGIF. Yeah. Like uh Perfect Strangers. Shout out the Balky, you know. Remember that? Artoculus. Uh Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs. It was on Friday. TGIF is ABC? No. Yeah, ABC. So yeah, Dinosaurs was on there. I don't know why it's the thing that came off Tuesday. Yeah, that was a classic. Um I feel like I'm missing one, but personally. Because the Miller, Miller Boyette, like the Miller Boyette production or whatever. Yeah, yeah. Because I be thinking in my head, after they cut one, doo-doo-doom. And they'd be like, cut. All right, y'all ready for the next one? Yeah, cue it up. Get ready to record the next one or whatever, like that. But um, yeah, it seemed like all of those Miller Boyette productions was T GIF'd out. Like they used the same guy to do the intros. They do, yeah. Yeah, it's crazy.

SPEAKER_04

That was um, I remember that. You stayed in the house and watched all of them. Even the ones you didn't like, I think, you still watched them. Because you wanted to get up to family matters or something like that. Yeah. You did watch all of them. All right, you want to go around one more time?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I got one last one. Y'all might not know this, but in New York, you would get on the swings, and a guy would get like stand up. You would sit on the swing and a guy would stand. I don't know what they called it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he used to make you go.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I got a little story.

SPEAKER_02

So you like crazy.

SPEAKER_01

So your face is kind of like in his crocs.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, like two people on it. Yeah, sitting at the same time.

SPEAKER_04

So you was the girl?

SPEAKER_01

I was the girl. What the girl? I don't know why you did it. Because my brother walked by and sit in it and snatched me so hard off that swing. I ain't never did it. That was my first time doing it and my last time.

SPEAKER_05

That's the bit on the damn swing.

SPEAKER_01

It's not really hard. It was a bit of a picture of the body.

SPEAKER_05

When I did it, it was. Seven years in.

SPEAKER_01

I wasn't looking at it as sexual the guy.

SPEAKER_04

I probably was, but nah, it was dangerous because like, say this is the swing. Like the swing would come like parallel to the bar. You go all the way up. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And then sometimes that that the chain will kind of slack and come down to the bottom hard. Yeah, I remember doing that.

SPEAKER_02

That um in them New York parks, the uh it's like a little half a globe thing that you climb on and stuff like that. I wonder what the purpose of that actually is. I mean, granted, climbing, but now that I look back at it, you know what I'm talking about? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

You know what I'm talking about? Like, we used to call it like the pterodone. We used to be in there wrestling with that. That's what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know what the purpose of that was for. Like, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

All right, hot star, you got one more?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so my last one that I got on here, I'm believed, let me see. It looks like it's fruit fruit stripe gum. So like the zebra. With the zebra on it? It didn't last long at all.

SPEAKER_01

It lasts 0.2 seconds.

SPEAKER_02

And I get uh honorary mention just because it's childhood, it's fresh air fund.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I definitely was there.

SPEAKER_05

Fresh air fund. I was definitely there.

SPEAKER_02

So uh I think it was a nonprofit, more than likely, but you pretty much essentially take urban kids and you send them um to like Connecticut, New Jersey. It's just affluent places like New York.

SPEAKER_05

Just New York shit. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

Like people from the city would get their kids sent out to Pennsylvania, these are whatever, different white families that would sponsor them more. I don't know if there was black families ever, but I always was with rich white families. You did it? And you for like two weeks in the summer, and then you come back.

SPEAKER_05

Your family sponsored you yourself.

SPEAKER_04

Nah, I went to the fresh. I went to I went to the same.

SPEAKER_05

You ain't had to have nobody sponsor you to go though, did it?

SPEAKER_04

Nah, I thought it was.

SPEAKER_02

Sign up for the program. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, okay, okay. Sign up for the program technically.

SPEAKER_04

Remember that. I remember wanting to go home. I was like, yeah, I want to go home.

SPEAKER_02

I remember being exposed to a maid. Like, oh wait, they got a maid? Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

You would go to somebody's house. Yeah, stay in the house.

SPEAKER_02

Like two weeks or a week or something like that.

SPEAKER_04

Like a foreign exchange. I was just about to say that.

SPEAKER_05

They'll send a white kid to the to the hood. Nah, it never went that way.

SPEAKER_02

You would do the reverse right there. There's some, there's some there's a Dave Chappelle's getting it somewhere though.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Just send a damn white kid to the hood.

SPEAKER_04

My cousin went so many times to this one family, like now he's still in contact. In contact. Yeah. I still talk to the guy that I did his graduation. You still, yeah, like still sending presence. Yeah. Wow. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

They probably think they made a um positive impact on his life.

SPEAKER_02

So the crazy thing, the crazy thing, real quick, is that the um a lot of fathers, black fathers, didn't like that shit. Yeah. Back then. They didn't like that shit. They'd be like, Well, you saying, like, you saying taking my kid away from what, the bad world to to give them a little bit of paradise for a couple weeks? Like, I could remember my pops arguing with my moms about it and shit. Yeah. I remember what does that make me look like as a as a protector or whatever, like that and a bravada?

SPEAKER_04

They had a damn pool at the one I was at. In their house? At the house, yeah. Yeah, man.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And that was big. You live in New York? You got a pool? What? Luxury. The poolman rich back then. Until one of the um brothers like dunked me in the water. I was I was done. I didn't want to play in the pool no more.

SPEAKER_05

Did he call you the N-word too?

SPEAKER_04

Nah, he might have. I was too little.

SPEAKER_05

I might have been about seven or eight. Call you a porch monkey. You ain't know what you want.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, yeah. I like to stay on the porch.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

SPEAKER_01

I love that song. Yes.

SPEAKER_04

So uh Smith Weston was a I'm gonna call it a spin-off of the bootcamp colleague. They part of the boot camp.

SPEAKER_02

They wasn't like they're not helped the skelter, you know what I'm saying? They paired off. They paired off.

SPEAKER_04

Help the Skelter was another group. Um Sean Price and Ruckness Monster, and you know. They had to change their name though. Oh, Ruck Ruck. Smith and Weston. Smith and Weston, yeah, yeah, they did. Yep. And um, that's it. January 10th, 1995. Uh so it's 30 years ago?

SPEAKER_08
