Where do we start with that last night? Well, if Man United do get Champions League, they've got to buy another squad, haven't they? It was just ridiculous. I couldn't understand it. Yeah, so would he not be better giving away a penalty? Hiya and welcome to This Is the Season podcast. Um next week is gonna be our 50th episode. Right. Where it could be bye bye from the Champions League for Manchester City. And in fact, all of the English clubs.
SPEAKER_01And on uh Hola, hola, wingman, hello night. Uh North Beer, Popavore. Tres Golds, Popavore. Federic go shut up and turn off the music.
SPEAKER_03Uh anyway, this is a Premier League only podcast, this isn't. Well, it's all you've got left, innit? Oh, right. Well, listen, it was, I mean, it's it was a night to forget, wasn't it? Obviously. Wow. What's he doing? What he's overthinking it. But do we need another hot head in there? Three goals down now is just gonna be a mammoth task.
SPEAKER_02Can I can I say from a from a uh Man United point of view, first of all, and I would say a neutral. As a neutral, but I did Batman say last night. What's the first 10 minutes that I thought you were gonna do? This depleted Real Mesh squad because they they got stuffed by Hafe and loads of no ones of shit. And the first, I thought Doku was fantastic, it was all gonna go great, and then you turn to shit.
SPEAKER_03You say that, but they you know they didn't they created a few chances, but no one got to the end of them early doors.
SPEAKER_02What you need is a big striker to stand in the middle of that goal.
SPEAKER_03Whenever Early Narland is injured, it takes him a few games to get back to his fitness, and it's no excuse, but like I mean, oh you can't not play him obviously against Real Madrid. Where do we start with that last night? I mean the five.
SPEAKER_02Well, you'd start with your team, mate, the team selection.
SPEAKER_03Three wingers. I mean, it was just weird. Like Pep was asked a question in the pre in the in the in the press conference before the game, and it was like uh their manager said Pep always has a little trick and surprise up his sleeve. And I think it got into his head and made him go, right, what can I do now to just make if everyone's expecting it, I need to give him something. I couldn't understand it, they were so unbalanced that it was just it was just ridiculous. I know they had players out, but it's a two-legged match. The rule is make sure you stay in the game for after the first result, and three goals down now is just gonna be a mammoth task to to to overcome that in this return leg next week.
SPEAKER_02Well, it was um Valverde and only scored three goals this season. I mean, he was he was insane.
SPEAKER_03He was insane. Every single goal was just incredible. You can blame defending, you could maybe blame the keeper. Uh, but yeah, I mean, starting Savinio for me was just like, what's the point in that? That's us down to ten men already. Um it was just ridiculous. I couldn't understand it, especially after the Newcastle game where we we were that was yeah, I'll be honest, going into that Newcastle game, I was a little bit worried because we've played him so many times and won so many times this year, you can't win them all. And we absolutely demolished Newcastle. He made 10 changes for that game and he made another seven last night. It's just it's just too much. But also, Marmoush was outstanding on that game as well, and I kind of thought, well, if he's if he is gonna I I don't know, if he's gonna start Haaland, then maybe play Mamush instead of Savinio or play Cherky because we have without a creative midfielder, like I said at the beginning, there's just no balance, and it was weird. Our defence was he then O'Reilly's been playing brilliant in midfield, and he he he moved him back to to left back when ain't Nori's been playing so well. Um, I mean that's not why we lost, but O'Reilly was weak on the first goal. I mean, it was just I don't know. Were you playing three at the back? We were playing four, we played four at the back. O'Reilly was left back. Um he played Cushing off as as left back as right back because obviously he's pace um with with Vincent. Um I don't know. Gutted.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, but also this might have an impact. Now, I was trying to look at this this morning. I read an article, I think it was the mirror. It was saying it might be hard for Man United now. So you've done it for Man United because all the English teams have not had a cracking week in the Champions League. I mean, Arsenal got a late penalty last night, but everybody else lost the Spurs game. I'm sure we'll touch on that later.
SPEAKER_03It's been it's been rubbish for for the for the honest, all I'm bothered about is City.
SPEAKER_02But you might ruin it for United because it might only be four places now.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02You know what I mean? So if we finish four.
SPEAKER_03That's what we're doing. It's a massive scam, isn't it? Um I mean, I said Vincent then because I was so wound up instead of Vinicius. But um Nigel, do you rate him? Who? Vinicious Jr. I think he's a class player, yeah. I think he's I think he's really good, yeah. Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Because I know loads of people put him in like the top, top, top, top level.
SPEAKER_03Well, and to be.
SPEAKER_02And I don't know, he's got br amazing feet.
SPEAKER_03That penalty was shit. Yeah, it was it was rubbish. That was, I mean, that who knows, but being hopeful, if it was four, it's a it's mission impossible. It's been done before, but probably not against Madrid. Three goals up, and they're gonna have obviously Mbappe back. This is where I think that Vinicius Jr.'s been good because he was their star man, and then they signed Mbappe, and he's he's not spat his dummy out like we everyone thought he would. He's still been good, and together the two of them have had have had a pretty good season, but they've not been the Real Madrid of old. But the thing is, we beat them once over there this year, and and this is this is my mentality with the Newcastle thing that I just mentioned, it was gonna always be a tough game, and and the fact that we were down as favourites away at the burnabout just because they had a couple of players out, they've still got a an incredible team. And we just Pep must have thought, right, we're going all out in this first game, but he didn't I I just as soon as I saw the starting lineup, uh, I'm still frustrated now, and all the blues are then messaging each other, just saying, What's he doing? What he's overthinking it. Um Right, right.
SPEAKER_02Listen, we've we've given, I mean, you and I, as a red, have given Semenio and uh Gay arguably the best two signings of the season. Yeah. Right? Along with their Katique. And it was the first performance in the Champions League. This is what I mean. Now, normally, if you'd have had an experienced manager like Sir Alex Ferguson, he wouldn't have been starting him, would he?
SPEAKER_03Why not? I don't think they were the problems starting them. I I I I honestly don't. I don't think Kushnov's starting was a problem. I think that was a master stroke as well. Like he has to start with his pace.
SPEAKER_02Didn't bite on that one then.
SPEAKER_03No, but I'm not biting on that because for me, Samenio uh and and Mark Gay weren't the weren't the problems there at all.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I'm sorry. I I said seeing the girl who produced the show this morning both walked in and I and and we both said at the same time they look like Bournemouth players last night. Right. Or Crystal Palace players.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Well, Savinio starting was the problem for me. And what's your body enough? Why did you like him? Because he wanted to leave and go to Spurs. Because he's just not good enough. He's not good enough. And the thing, my issue is when you've I know Foden's been out of sort, but games like that are you know, are where you need your big players. And for me, Cherky, Foden or Mamush should have started, and that's that's my issue with Savinio starting, just because there's better players on the bench that would have made a difference and given us more balance.
SPEAKER_02Alright, so before the match started, there was a lot of um, you know, arguably these are the best two keepers in the world, uh Gigi Johnarama and uh Thibaut Courtois, and people were saying, you know, which one's best and everything. That first that first goal, right? The first goal where Old Donner comes out of his um comes out of his penalty area. Yeah, what what was he doing there? Well, and he was going to go out of the box, which is why he moved his arm away because he didn't want to get sent off.
SPEAKER_03That's what happened. Yeah, so would he not be better giving away a penalty then? Well, no, because then he would have probably been sent off as well. That's the thing, you see. So no, because he's got that in him though, anyway.
SPEAKER_02We have said that before.
SPEAKER_03He's he's a he's a world-class keeper, and you know what? The thing is, with players this good, it it could be completely different next week. They they had the first goal was uh poor defending, I'd say. I mean, it was obviously you know, it was an assist for Courtois, wasn't it? O'Reilly could have and should have done better, and then you look at the goalkeeper, but like I just mentioned, there was a potential for him in his head, he thought because he was coming out of speed that he could potentially give away uh but would be sent off, so he's pulled his arm away. When you look at it back, I mean he could have just saved it and it would have been absolutely fine. As Roy Keane would say, it's a charm. I know, and then the second one was uh a lucky deflection as well from Diaz, but he still finished it brilliantly, and then the third one, you've just got to hold your hands up and say pure class. It was incredible. The ball from uh from Diaz, um, and then and then it was just a magic finish, wasn't it? So there we go. I mean it's sad I mean it's sad times for you. Well, it's it's really not sad times, is it? The problem is now, it's how we react, and we've got to go away at West Ham, and we've got to put a performance in. This game could be it could go one of two ways, this result. Everyone could be doom and gloom. We're still in the tie. I know we're three goals down, it's mission impossible, but we're still in it. We're not out, so we need to go and put a performance in um at West Ham.
SPEAKER_02Well, forget West Ham, the return leg next week, yeah. Is it next week? Next week, right? Uh so I don't think that these teams play enough. Uh, you know, I'd I'd I'd be happy to watch them every week. Um, so it's Man City versus Real Madrid next week, yeah. Tuesday, yeah. Tuesday, right? Is it gonna be the empty had or is it gonna be sold out with people paying thousands for tickets and wanting to be, quote, uh Norwich going, you know, where's our 12th man?
SPEAKER_03So of course it'll be a sellout. It will be.
SPEAKER_02Because you want to see one of these stars, don't you? But if Real Madrid go and score two goals pretty early on, does it empty from there?
SPEAKER_03The thing is, mate, if from from in my opinion now, right, if we of course you go and support the team, and even if we if we win 2-0 and we're out of the competition, then that could work in our favour with the with the with the uh title running for a few less games. We're not playing football every like twice a week. Hang on, you're but when Man United were playing like every six months. Yeah, well that's it, exactly. It's the difference. So what I'm saying is if we put a shift in, then it's not the end of the world. We've had it, we've had a shocking start to the tie, but we've still got loads to fight for. You know, we're in we're we're we're through to the next round of the FA Cup with a brilliant win against Newcastle. Uh we've got a tasty draw at home to Liverpool, but you'd a home draw against anyone you'd fancy us. So that's a good draw and a good opportunity, even though it's Liverpool to move forward in the FA Cup. We're still in the title race, although we're obviously it's in it's in we've got Spurs are still in the title race.
SPEAKER_02You're talking about it. I've always been sad thing in the second season, mate.
SPEAKER_03And also, we're we're we're at this moment, we're still in four competitions and it's been a bit of a rebuild season. So you've got to be happy. Of course it'll be a sellout next week.
SPEAKER_02Who were you missing right last night in the Champions League? If you could bring a player back, like uh Kevin De Bruyne.
SPEAKER_03If we had Kevin, you know, that the Kevin of old would have been amazing. We we were we were missing a playmaker last night to break down what was an incredible defence because they had a full strength defence. It's alright saying the best striker in the world's out, but you can you've still you know you still play. The what?
SPEAKER_02The best striker in the world's out.
SPEAKER_03That's what everyone's saying, isn't it? But yeah, yeah, shut up.
SPEAKER_02So you're saying now on this podcast that Ember pays a better striker?
SPEAKER_03No, I'm not. Well, he is when he's he's had an ankle knock. And I'm stats. Anyway, listen, let's see what happens. Let's see what happens next week at the Etihad. It's gonna be uh uh it's hard. Three goals down against Madrid.
SPEAKER_02Because you do work at City, uh have they made you go flyering for half-price tickets and all that?
SPEAKER_03Not at all, mate, because it'll be a sellout. Come on, it'll be a sellout. It'll be a sellout, mate. Yeah, yeah, of course it will be. Um, anyway, looking forward to the weekend, uh we move on, we dust ourselves down, and we've got to put a shift in against West Ham. West Ham? West Ham are fighting for survival. That's very tight at the bottom.
SPEAKER_02I saw them play Liverpool uh live at um at Anfield, and they are really not a bad side. It was 5-2, and that and that that doesn't show the the full story.
SPEAKER_03But I don't think 3-0 shows the full story last night. The first half it did, but you know, it wasn't I don't know. We did we got a lesson yesterday. We got battered. You put your pants pulled down. Yeah. For me, it was how little we created. You know, there was there was a couple of snapshots. There was nothing really.
SPEAKER_02I'm not sitting there laughing because you know it's a city podcast, it's a United podcast. We have a we have a laugh. We talk about both of them. When all the when all the shit was going down with Amarim and Sheshko couldn't hit a barn door and everything, you're laughing at me, and and we're gonna get relegated, and I predicted we finished second in the league. Yeah. Now it's here. Now I can say, look, we're not in the Champions League this this season, so the lads are on old day. But and and Carrick's at the wheel. Yeah. Right? And the wheels might be about to fall off. Yeah. But Man United have got Villa this weekend, right? Now, Villa, I I can't work out Villa at the minute. You know, like one of those teams that you you wouldn't back, but you wouldn't back against them because you don't know what you're gonna get from them.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. On the day they could beat any other team in the Premier League. But they could also lose to Wolves 7-nil. The way they're playing at the minute.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So this weekend, um Lissandra Martinez is out again, isn't he? That's that's the I've been scraping round for Man United News. There is there is no news. Okay. There was there is no news. Um he's he's injured again. Um and I just I just think look, it'll be it'll be a be a tough game.
SPEAKER_03It's no there's no news because of how little you play. That's why. Honestly.
SPEAKER_02That poor old stadium just sitting there, there's no gigs on there or anything like that. Well, he's been he's been left a while. But there's there's no there's no gigs, there's no shows, there's nothing there. And I drive past that every day to go home, and you think, put you put a friendly on midweek, wouldn't you? Yeah. You put you know, you put a friendly on midweek. So I'm I'm not, I could predict it.
SPEAKER_03Um You've not even got soccer aid this year, because that's going to uh that's going to West Ham Stadium.
SPEAKER_02So you we've we've we've got we've got now so what I'm saying to the Glazers at Ratcliffe is while you've got no no games for two weeks, mend the roofs, give it a lick of paint, and they'll say, No, we're not doing that because we've got the circus tent uh coming. The UK's oh well, the world's best sporting venue. Saving money for tent pegs, yeah, yeah, too right. Oh, I'll tell you, there was a story um I think read this morning in one of the newspapers about um Amran have finally spoken out.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02About any of this of the downfall of it. He wanted uh as as was predicted at the time, he wanted Emmy Martinez, not Ollie Watkins, uh not Sheshko and um the lemon in goal, and this is what he blames for the downfall.
SPEAKER_03Right, okay. Well that what do you uh back to United? Let's stay with United at the minute. Do you think Carrick will get the job full time? Nah. You don't? Nah, absolutely. Who do you reckon's gonna get it then? Who who is there out there then that's gonna get the job?
SPEAKER_02As long as it's not Gareth Southgate, as as every man you fan has said. Luis Enrique, maybe? I'd love Ancelotti, but uh, you know, I said that right from the start. Yeah. Because I I think before he retires, just the calm influence, yeah, he's been around.
SPEAKER_03I can't Do you know what? I know it sounds ridiculous, but I can see him go he going back to Real Madrid again because who is the better than that? Yeah. There were rumours that they were gonna potentially get Mourinho in, but obviously after everything that's happened with the Benfica game, uh there was talk, there was whispers that he before the Benfica thing that he he might end up back at Real Madrid. Like United for a minute. No, next year.
SPEAKER_02Do you know what there was a there's a there's a poll on um on those things, and it was it was more positive that Man United would take Mourinho, right? Would take Mourinho back.
SPEAKER_03Well he's got he's class manager, isn't he?
SPEAKER_02But but is he is he still? I think he's a good manager. I mean you never lose it. Class is permanent, isn't it? In form form temporary, but do we need another hot head in there? Because you know how the business is run now, isn't it? They don't necessarily want just a yes boy, but how much would say Carrick, if he got the job, have influence over transfers? He could go up to you know Ratcliffe and go, There's my list of players that I really want. Now I've got the job.
SPEAKER_03He'll say, Thanks very much.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, here's some lad from Bournemouth who's 17.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Bro, if Man United do get Champions League, they've got to buy another squad, haven't they?
SPEAKER_03You've got to double that that squad. You get some more money though, and you attract the this is the the annoying thing is then you do get to attract those those bigger names because they all want to play in the Champions League.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but but who's who's we were linked with that uh lad who scored for Chelsea last night. We still get linked with him because somebody had done that deal when he was at Chelsea. We'd get linked with Cole Palmer, there's that lad at Real Madrid as well. There's a there's a few, there's the the Marne lad at Wolves, but you know he's improving at the minute and might be one for the future.
SPEAKER_03I'd say that that's the kind of level that you're looking at. Right, does it Marne lad at Wolves?
SPEAKER_02Well, why why you why are you saying that? No, I'm not.
SPEAKER_03I'm just a good player. Yeah, you're not gonna leave Madrid to enjoy Man United unless you're getting paid 500 grand a week.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I've no, I genuinely have no idea where Mason Mount is, by the way. I've I'm just I have and occasionally a player pops up on the bench and you go, Oh, did you forget about him? Like Phil Jones. Phil Jones popped up on the bench. So I have no idea. So I generally do not have any Man United news. We play Villa, uh, and then we go on to I think it's Bournemouth and then um Leeds and Chelsea.
SPEAKER_03So listen, the I mean the thing is now, down at the bottom of the league, it is getting very, very, very tight, and Tottenham are right in it now. Completely.
SPEAKER_02We talk about the Tottenham game, I mean. Yeah, it's crazy, wasn't it? Right, so you've been you bin off and drop Vicario, right? Your goalkeeper. You put the other lad in, he falls over twice. Yeah, I mean miss kicks three three down. So, I mean, it must be the most embarrassing thing. And then I suppose Vicario's now coming on going, see, told ya. Yeah, he goes in goal within what is it, a minute, two minutes, he concedes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, but honestly, it was it's weird in it, football though. Sometimes, even though you've got no um, you know, you don't care about the club at all, but that you when that keeper came off, I think everyone like went, oh bless him. I hope he's alright.
SPEAKER_02But it could have been like that, um, was it in Brazil? That that that that game where there was 23 red cards a couple of days ago. Absolutely Cruz Air and Atletico Mineiro. And was it was it Hulk as well? Is that Hulk as in Hulk? That was the old Hulk who went to China who looks like Hulk. Yeah, was that is that the same guy?
SPEAKER_03That was him roundhousing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. It was absolutely nuts that game. If you've not seen it, it's worth a YouTube thing. Everyone's been talking about it. 23 red cards. It was like one big UFC fight. Yeah, it was crazy.
SPEAKER_03They had to call in the army to calm everyone down.
SPEAKER_02It was I mean, but this is this is what I think. You don't want to see that at uh you know a Premier League level or whatever. But when you see Man City versus Man United, and there might be one yellow card for tripping, yeah, I want to be seeing 12, 14 yellow cards.
SPEAKER_03I can imagine Roy Keane being on the commentary of that game in Brazil and going, at least they're showing some fights.
SPEAKER_00Eight nights, you should have kept that to yourself.
SPEAKER_02That could have been that could have been your thing this week. Go viral. Get Roy Keane on the commentary of this.
SPEAKER_00Just buy them, get in there, get stuck in, it's your job. It's what we want to say. Yeah, you go in there with two feet, a bit of passion. That's what you mean. Passion!
SPEAKER_03Amazing, right? Well, listen, let's do some predictions then for the weekend. So um honestly, I really feel that although West Ham are on 28, Forest 28, Spurs 29, Leeds 31, Leeds could be dragged into it now, and I thought they were out of there. Uh, but Leeds could be dragged into it a little bit, depending on the form of those all those four clubs. Uh, but I do think City will get the job done at the weekend against against West Ham. I think we'll I think we'll beat them 3-1 away at West Ham. I do. I think City have got to they've got to dust themselves down, they've got to get together and say, let's have an amazing end to the season, let's forget Madrid and let's let's go and battle Western.
SPEAKER_02So have you so are you just throwing Madrid away then? Is that is it?
SPEAKER_03I'm not. We'll worry about that Tuesday. It's one game at a time there.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so so so Harlan's pretty, you know, he's he's not fully, fully fit. You wouldn't you wouldn't play him against West Hammer? No, I would do, I would do, yeah. I definitely would, yeah, of course. All right, so you you you're you're playing an injured racehorse, yeah?
SPEAKER_03No, he's not injured, is he? He's not he's to be fair as well. Yesterday he got no service. This is what I mean about playmaker. There's no point having three wingers on a pitch, but we've moved on from that. I need to calm down from that. My blood pressure and everything. Right, so so you're not are you putting a weakened squad out against No, not at all. We need to go for it. The thing is, that team was apparently a weakened squad against West uh against Newcastle, and we batted him. Yeah, I don't think we've got a weakened team. Um he just needs to. I would definitely start Haaland against against West Ham. Marmous Marmous? Maybe, maybe give Marmoush some minutes as well. Just don't play three wingers. Don't play Savinio. Don't play Savinio.
SPEAKER_02All right.
SPEAKER_03Sell Savinio. Which would you gift him? They should have done like a bit of a home alone where they did a body count of everyone, a little bit of a head count, and they're going round and they're counting everyone and going, right, we're all there, drive off and left Savinio in.
SPEAKER_02Do you know what though? He's the sort of player that will go somewhere like Madrid or Barcelona and be a worldie by accident. Good luck to him. We've all we've all got those. So you say 3-1 West Ham. Yes. Uh I'm going the other way.
SPEAKER_033-1 City against West Ham. Oh, really?
SPEAKER_02I'm going 3-1 West Ham.
SPEAKER_03Right, okay.
SPEAKER_02Uh and I'm going Hattrick for Jimmy Somerville.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02From the Communards. You know, um, he's a good player, him. Uh I I I I I keep saying, but someone's um someone's gonna sign him big. Right. Like United. Someone big. Yeah. No, he's he's that he's he's we he's he's he's a bit like Doku. He's he's so super quick. Yeah, yeah. He's not as built as Doku, but he's he's not flimsy, it's well, it's actually really small, but he's really, really quick, but better than the you know the ones of old like Anthony, you know, that like he's got all the skills, but does nothing else with it.
SPEAKER_03Completely get it, yeah, yeah. Completely get it. So I anyway, I'm I'm quite confident that we'll bounce back um against against West Ham. You've got Aston Villa.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it depends what Villa turns up. I wouldn't uh I and it depends what Unite turns up as well, because we're on the back of a loss. We haven't played in seven months.
SPEAKER_03You on goal difference, unbelievably, are just above Villa in the table. So it's a big game for top four.
SPEAKER_02Do you know what? I'm gonna do I'm gonna go the 2-2, the old Desmond. Right. That's a 2-2, which keeps us in fourth place, doesn't it? That will keep you if everybody if results go for us.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Because Chelsea Chelsea are 48 points in fifth, uh, as are Liverpool as well. It's getting pretty tight. It's getting close to the top four.
SPEAKER_02But also they've got Champions League to worry about as well. And Chelsea got, was it 3-2 uh from Paris Saint-Germain?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh and they just fell apart in the second half, Chelsea. Liverpool, again, a bit like City, um, should have been 4-0 up within like 10 minutes. I thought this is gonna be a route.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And they they they were poor, poor, poor.
SPEAKER_03I reckon um I think United nil villa four.
SPEAKER_02So our 50th podcast next week, Nigel. Uh, one point now, there's 50 episodes. You're gonna predict that City actually lose a game or at least draw. Okay. What would you have said before the Champions League game?
SPEAKER_03For this one, uh before I saw the team, I'd have said.
SPEAKER_02That is a 3-0, that is a 3-0, honestly. It's a tough place to go, isn't it?
SPEAKER_03Didn't really work out for Savinian all. Thing is, honestly, I'd I'd I'd have been happy with the draw. I'd have even been happy with getting beat 3-2, but not 3-0.
SPEAKER_02Should have been four, really. Shit penalty. Right. So thanks for listening. Um, before we go, we're just trying to work out time differences. Yeah and clocks going back and forward. So the end of this month, where are you off?
SPEAKER_03I'm going to Barbados. Not to say honestly, I need to be health's not so good. I've got to go and get some sun.
SPEAKER_02Right. So you're going to Barbados. Are you taking the kid?
