Arsenal are just grinding out results. They're not playing amazing football. When was his last game cheap?
SPEAKER_01No matter what happens, it's gonna mess up again. Are you still winning the league? Hey Nigel, welcome to This Is the Season podcast. I'm Joel.
SPEAKER_00Hello.
SPEAKER_01I'm a United fan. What a weekend. And who are you? I'm Nigel and I'm a City fan.
SPEAKER_02And everything's fine.
SPEAKER_01As we say goodbye to Manchester City from the Champions League. As we finally concede the Premier League at Arsenal. Not yet. It's not happened yet. Do you know what? He walks in this morning, no word of a lie. Now, it does sound a little bit rough because it was his his birthday drinks at the weekend. Um and he and he went, I've got it, we're gonna win the treble.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Honestly, I've woke up dead confident.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We're gonna win 4-0 tomorrow night. Hang on, hang on. You've woken up. You look like you've not been to bed. No, no, honestly, I've I have slept.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh we're gonna we're gonna win tomorrow night 4-0.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Then we're gonna beat Arsenal at Wembley at the weekend. Honestly, it's all happening, so that'll be our first first um cup of the of the of the season. This is the season. This is the season.
SPEAKER_01And then and then from there you um you go and win the late.
SPEAKER_02If we play Arsenal again, yeah, yeah, obviously we've got that game in hand. It's nine points at the minute, but if we win that game in hand, it's six. Then if we beat them, it's three. Yeah. And then they'll start to bottle it.
SPEAKER_01Can I just say for ratings, um the the ratings seem to go up when City lose or City draw or City have a shocker? When City are flying, right? If we go back to episode one, two, three, four, five, six, but basically the Amram era, where you just came and laughed at me every single week, right? No one's asked. Okay. But when but when City are being knocked off, not even knocked off the perch, they're they've got a clothesline from hell off the perch.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't I don't think so. I don't think so at all. City have been like absolutely you know, by far the best, the best, most successful club in the last 10 years. Uh massively. No one's come close. Liverpool have challenged, but they've they've never won back to back. Okay. Never mind four on the bounce. Right, forget all that. They always just fade away the season after they win, which is what they're doing this year. That's what you're just going on there. No, we're rebuilding, mate. We're having a rebuild season.
SPEAKER_01The best keeper in the world. He's doing it now on a regular basis, Nigel.
SPEAKER_02Arsenal are just grinding out results. They're not playing amazing football. We'll definitely win a cup or maybe.
SPEAKER_01A game before the end of the season. There's a few questions I want to ask from a Man United fans' point of view. Number one, against West Ham. Now, I kept saying to you since I saw him live at Anfield, West Ham are not a bad side.
SPEAKER_02West Ham are shy, but they're fighting for something now. That's the thing. West Ham and Forest, we have drawn our last two games against teams that have not been good this season, but are now fighting for the lives. And they're scrapping and they did it well at the weekend.
SPEAKER_01It could have gone either way. Okay, but it didn't. Right, questions. Number one, what footwear was Erland Haaland wearing at the weekend? Was it his Mrs. Hyde Heels? Was it uh Doc Martin's and um Semenio, who we love, he was playing in jeans.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was it was just a weird one at the weekend. City had chances to win it, they really did.
SPEAKER_01Was that with that first that first goal from um Bernardo Silva?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he meant it. He know it in me. Wasn't a cross, it was a cross it was a cross. It was pure class. He saw the keeper. There was just a really tight angle for him to just pop it over the top of him. It was absolutely outstanding.
SPEAKER_01So, first of all, fair play to Tebu um Bruno Fernandez for his for his cross that happened to go. What a load of rubbish. When when they equalised, Dorother Rummer should have done better. Right. So the best keeper in the world, yeah. The best keeper in the world. One of. Yeah, he's not the best keeper in your in your team. The best keeper in the world. What he's doing it now on a regular basis, Nigel. You need to be having a word. It's not it's not one of you. He's coming out to try and scoop it away, right? But he can't do that. And then he gets a rush a butt to the head and he comes running out and all this. Just be saving him. It needs to be more Jordan Pickford.
SPEAKER_02City, come on.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I had a Pickford all day long over Donna Rummer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, fair enough. I mean, I don't understand why he went. I don't understand why he went up for the let's get to that game in a bit, but I don't understand why he even went up for that Arsenal one. Yeah. I mean, it could come down to goal difference. What was the point in that?
SPEAKER_01I know, I reckon, I reckon he's had a couple of grand on uh Arsenal winning it. He just he just wanted to get an extra uh do you know what?
SPEAKER_02Um City City are still there and thereabouts. We're still creating chances, you know. We we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Why do you think that's but I'm not sure, but I mean obviously Gay had an opportunity, almost an open goal. Uh Haaland should have done better. There were there were a few snapshots from Cherky. Well, we're creating chances, so this is when I'm not worried. Like up until this game, the last couple of games before, we weren't creating chances. Now we are, so it's all gonna come good, and we're gonna batter Madrid tomorrow night.
SPEAKER_01Well, why didn't Cherky start? I don't know. Is is your creating midfield, huh?
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's just it's just a bit weird. Like Nico and there was a stat before showing the amount of games. I know Rodri's obviously fit now, but Nico um has been incredible in that position as well. I just I don't know. You can't play all the players, but when things aren't working out and the stats come out about the players that aren't playing and how many we've won when they are, it's easy to go, right? Well, they should be playing. Just got to trust Pep and everything will be alright. We'll win a couple of we'll win, we'll definitely win a cup or maybe a couple of years. A game before the end of the season. No, it's not been a great cocky now, because you you you know, you you're doing alright and you might get top four. Look, it's it's not been a great couple of couple of days.
SPEAKER_01I've thought three, four, five days, what is it?
SPEAKER_02It's been it's been alright. I mean, listen, this is the problem. When you're in four competitions, one week, one bad week can ruin everything. It really can. But I'm I am genuinely confident going into the game against Arsenal at the weekend. Arsenal are just grinding out results. They're not playing amazing football. They're not. They're not, but they're winning. Right, I've asked you. And we're drawing. We've not lost, though, have we? We're drawing.
SPEAKER_01You're being again. It's not good enough. Yeah, but it's not it's not the Japanese league, mate.
SPEAKER_02Where from was it next season you get um penalty shootouts for a win.
SPEAKER_01So, I mean, look, I I don't even need to ask you because I know the answer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Are you still winning the league? Yeah. It's a tough one, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Now it's getting tough, but I don't think it's over yet. I think if Arsenal lose this, then wow, they will, you know, they are it's a massive advantage, Arsenal.
SPEAKER_01All right. Uh, before we talk about Champions League and weekend fixtures coming up, we play Friday night. Friday night, eight o'clock, and we don't play for another six months. Let's go to the Red Side of Manchester. Is Bruno Fernandez the best number ten in the world? I just think that it's got disaster written all over it. It's it's it's not a good place to be at the minute. Nig? Yeah. Yes or no? Look me in the eye. Is Bruno Fernandez the best number ten in the world?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_01Who's better?
SPEAKER_02Um I don't think he is. I think I think he's playing a lot better now that he's playing in in a decent position and now that he's playing now that the formation is better. Who is better than Bruno Fernandez currently? I don't know. Bellingham injured? I don't know. He's doing alright.
SPEAKER_01He's doing alright. He broke David Beckham's record at the um weekend for most assists in a Premier League season at United.
SPEAKER_02I've seen that, I've seen that, yeah. Yeah, you sort of. I mean, who do you think was better? If you could have one of those players, would you rather have Beckham or Bruno? Now? Yeah. Like, well, not now, because he's that age, but at his best. Yeah, but would you rather have Beckham at his best or Bruno at his best at United for the next 10 years?
SPEAKER_01Anytime I'm pissed, I'm in by myself. I always put David Beckham versus Grease on YouTube. And and I've shown me Laddit and gone, right. This is how you do a performance. It is one of the best things you'd ever see, isn't it? Yeah, it's cool. You know, I I'm I'm a big fan of Beckham, but I think you know, Brunez, Bruno, it's um that's what you call him. Brunez, yeah. A bit like J-Lo, Brunez. Um I I I think he's I think he's phenomenal. And um, you know, I will I will say that what was it, six months ago and we were gonna get rid of him for 100 million. I always put my hand up in the in the air going, yeah, I'll drive him there myself. Yeah. Uh however, now, nah, whatever he wants now, you know, if he wants 400 grand a week, um, pay him 400 grand a week.
SPEAKER_02Next one just imagine how good he would have been if he'd not been playing for shit managers and a shit team last 10 years.
SPEAKER_01I I said this yesterday, we would have won the league if Amrin hadn't existed or had got fired earlier. We would be we'd be mild said you.
SPEAKER_02And then what happens with Casemiro because you've not took him on on the year. Uh like he's basically said that that's not happening. Are they gonna are they gonna make a U-turn on that and pay him ridiculous cash? Or is he gone?
SPEAKER_01Well, I'd I from watching stuff this morning, the insiders are saying, look, he's already gone, it's a you know he's he's he's gone. There's no U-turn in that. And also he'll want the big dough, won't he? Plus the 20% extra for Champions League. I personally, because we're gonna need to double that squad size we were talking about last week. I would bring somebody in uh who's gonna replace him and let him play with him for a year. You've got to have somebody in that Champions League experience category.
SPEAKER_02And I also think for Mainu, he's probably Mainu's probably learning off him as well. This is what I mean. And if he's next to him, but it's no coincidence that you've started winning now that you're playing in a proper formation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and also, you know, what is he, 54? Um he's had a he's had a phenomenal season. What is it, eight goals this season? And he lifts the place, and he is the superstar of the squad. If you know, you know, if you're talking about name, value, and whatever. Last season, now I you know, we've all said I thought his legs have gone and everything.
SPEAKER_02Every single one of these players now that you're you're now coming back to, you wanted to sell a couple of.
SPEAKER_01I was I was I was I was driving him to Saudi Arabia. Yeah, uh, I was, you know, Bruno was in the boot. I was I was Sheshko, you know, again comes off the bench, comes off the bench and scores. I mean, he should have scored two. Um just uh couldn't you as well? The first half uh the weekend was really, really, really dull. Slow start, it was boring, it was just like that. Second half, Carrick got into the heads and said, Hey you lads, yeah, do you want to see a third of you like a what?
SPEAKER_02Let's talk about let's talk about the Carrick thing because I just think that it's got disaster written all over it. Because, you know, how can you not give him the job now? But it's really giving them a massive headache, all these nonsense, uh just idiots that are in charge of your club, who now he is surely, surely he's earned the right to get that job. But they they they were never he was never really in their thoughts of getting the job for the full full time, they're already frantically looking for who it's gonna be, and if they don't give it him, then then the new manager's doomed from the off. Right, so he really is, but but then if you do give it him and it doesn't work out, like it's just it's this is why it's so hard for him to make a decision now.
SPEAKER_01It is really hard, right? So if if you what do you do? Well, if you say to me it's a choice of Carrick or Oliver Glasner, I'd go Carrick every day of the week. Is it um I don't know, England manager? What's his face? Gar Southgate, former England manager. But no, no, you go Carrick, don't you? But if you are given the opportunity of signing, you know, the Carlo Ancelotti or Luis Enrique or one of these.
SPEAKER_02But why would Enrique's not gonna leave Paris for you guys, is he?
SPEAKER_01Why? I just know. It must be so boring in Paris, though. It must be really, really boring.
SPEAKER_02Nice place.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's nice, it's it's all I like it. Oh, of course, yeah, but you're you're rough as you're from Ramsbot night.
SPEAKER_02I love it, mate.
SPEAKER_01I like I like Maguette. He likes Maguettes. Yeah, he doesn't even understand that the the graffiti is all in foreign. Yeah, he doesn't get any of that. But look, at the minute, he's I think he's pretty nailed on to get it. And it would it who I just think it looks so bad if you don't give it to him. But then it's gonna be a few times.
SPEAKER_02Everyone will then go, I told you so. He's not got the experience, he can handle this. It really is, and that's the only thing that I'm really enjoying about this situation because no matter what happens, it's gonna mess up again.
SPEAKER_01Right. Well, I I know it is. I could I could genuinely see a manager swap between uh Unay Emery and Carrick, Carrick to Villa and Unay Emery into United.
SPEAKER_02I just don't, I mean, I don't think that Carrick would would do that well at Aston Villa. I genuinely think there's something in the being part of the Manchester United setup. I genuinely believe that being someone who's got a relationship with a club for a young manager makes a huge, huge difference. I reckon if he was to go to any other uh team in the Premier League, it wouldn't work out for him.
SPEAKER_01I'll text my mate um who works for Villa and I said, Why are Villa four to one to beat Man United? Why are you such a big price? And he went, we've got no midfield. Uh John McGinn doesn't want to get injured because he's he's got the World Cup coming up, and that's you know, Scotland, yeah, you know. Uh Oli Watkins has got a face on. Um and and you know, there's no um what's your man called? Uh Tielemans. He's not there, Sancho's gone. It's it's it's not a good place to be at the minute. And they were technically joint third on goal difference, Man United were ahead of them, and they just didn't look great yesterday. When Ross Barclay pops up and scores your goal, you're like, you know got a depleted squad. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. Hey, but we've all been there, and we've we've all you haven't got an excuse, you've not got a depleted squad.
SPEAKER_02No, at the minute, we've we're we're pretty much almost parts of full strength. Obviously, no Gavardiol, who's a who's a big, big part of our team, but other than that, we're pretty much there. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh well, you know, you you've not come in all bullished there, which is which is a change, right?
SPEAKER_02Well, you can't listen, you can't because the reality is so much depends on other people, but still at this moment in time, we just I think there were you there were positives to take from the West Ham game in that we're creating a load of chances. Um I just think there's a big I I don't know. I I what I'm saying is we've now got to a stage where we've got everyone fit, and it's a difficult job for Pep now to pick a team from everybody that's available. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Imagine this. In his last season before he leaves and Moresca comes in, he's you know two weeks ago he's on for the treble and and now it's it's all up in all up in flames.
SPEAKER_02It's not, is it? We're at Wembley next weekend, which is going to be amazing. We're against Real Madrid in the in the FA, in the sorry Champions League on Tuesday tomorrow night. Looking forward to it. It is potentially mission mission impossible, but I honestly believe it that like that something something can happen in that game.
SPEAKER_01Right. Let's let's talk about the Champions League. Right. So you're 3-0 down from the first leg. Yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_02First leg, first half, and you've got just shocking.
SPEAKER_01You've got Wembley coming up as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So are you just gonna put That's it?
SPEAKER_02Do you prioritise Wembley? What do you do? Well, well, come on, what do you do? You're a city fan. I just don't uh if I'm being absolutely honest, I I do want us to put a shift in tomorrow night. I think against any team it's difficult if you give them a three-goal head start. Against Real Madrid, it's probably impossible. What's this shite you're putting on there? Here it is. Right, mission impossible. So, what I reckon is get three goals tomorrow. But where you beat them on penalties. But where are your goals coming from?
SPEAKER_01I well, Haaland, there's there's there's lots of. Harland has scored the same amount of goals as Virgil van Dijk since the uh since the start of the year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's had an ankle knock, he's had an injury, he's gonna be alright.
SPEAKER_01Right, okay.
SPEAKER_02He didn't look rubbish at the weekend. He didn't, he didn't look you know, he just needs the service.
SPEAKER_01Okay, there's no service coming from him. Uh has Semena and um Gay played too many games? No. Well, they look like it at the weekend.
SPEAKER_02They've not.
SPEAKER_01Okay. What about your keeper? Oh, I've got I've got great keeper.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely, but honestly, worldly of a keeper.
SPEAKER_01Right. Amazing. When was his last clean sheet?
SPEAKER_02He'd get into any team in the Premier League.
SPEAKER_01When was his last clean sheet?
SPEAKER_02We've not lost, have we?
SPEAKER_01In all seriously. Don't worry about sitting. I'm not worried. I'm not worried. I don't go to bed on a night.
SPEAKER_02Um not sleeping, thinking we will, I'm very, very confident about Wembley, and I think it's gonna make Arsenal worker. But I'm not asking you. I'm asking you about that. You ask me which one of more important is more important. I think at this stage, getting a League Cup would be absolutely wonderful for our team. Um because let's be honest with you, if we if we do go for you, we've got what three, we've got Munich next, and we probably won't beat them. Let's beat Arsenal at the weekend, let's batter them, let's make them wobble, and then let's have a go at this league because it's not over. Nine points that we're still we're still in with the shout, and we've got the FA Cup to look forward to. Unfortunately, you over there have got one game every ten days because the only competition you're in and kind of in is getting into the top four in the Premier League.
SPEAKER_01But Arsenal now can play the C Squad because they're clear that they've got the titles in the bag now.
SPEAKER_02It's not. Well it will it is. So they'll play the C squad against City at the Etiad. But we what why they'll play the best team that they can, surely, for the rest of the season.
SPEAKER_01It doesn't matter. No, Nigel, it's in the bag. Arsenal, as predicted, Arsenal have won the league. That is now in the bag. You need to win every single game, and they need to massively screw up here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can see it happening. After this League Cup, there's gonna be some honestly, they'll free count.
SPEAKER_01They'll prioritise the League Cup, they will prioritise the Champions League, and I genuinely can see him getting the treble, you know.
SPEAKER_02Who? Arsenal. The League Cup isn't the treble, it's the FA Cup. But they're gonna win all four. Four, yeah. You think they'll win all four? I can see them winning all four. Nah. They won't win all four. I don't, I genuinely don't think they'll win all four.
SPEAKER_01It's never been done as it in this country.
SPEAKER_02Never ever ever been done.
SPEAKER_01You've got the treble. Obviously, we've got the treble.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, but it's never been done in this country.
SPEAKER_02No, I couldn't We've come close a few times.
SPEAKER_01Here we go. I was so close to pulling Shakira, but she's never turned up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, we won we've won the domestic treble as well. I don't think you guys have done that, have you? Well, it's the domestic treble.
SPEAKER_01That's like a domestic tree.
SPEAKER_02We've won it all. 100 points.
SPEAKER_01Let's talk about um Bournemouth versus Man United. It's Friday, it's it's Friday, it's 8 pm. I hate these, I hate these Friday night games. I could never get up for 'em. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02I know I know exactly what you mean. I mean, this that was weird on Saturday at eight o'clock. I didn't like that. Interrupted my birthday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but you had like 47 baby Guinnesses at this point. And also, you put a you put a picture on Instagram of you with a big tray of baby Guinnesses, and I thought, oh, what's that on the TV? And it was rugby. No, it wasn't. Oh, that was because City hadn't started. Oh what time did you start? Before that. No wonder you were checking the highlights this morning on your phone. We're using 12. You probably thought you'd won the game, didn't you? Alright, so uh Bournemouth. Yeah. Talk to me about Bournemouth.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. There are uh there were a bit of an up and down season. Well, we can't back him, you can't back up. Is it at Bournemouth?
SPEAKER_01Bournemouth, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Anything could happen. Probably a draw, I reckon. I guess Bournemouth at Bournemouth.
SPEAKER_01All right. For you guys. At this point, you could just say, I reckon you're on a roll, you can go and win this.
SPEAKER_02What the league?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, I'll put the same. I I re well I think I think we tight, but I think we'll do Bournemouth 2-1.
SPEAKER_02Right, okay.
SPEAKER_01Um Bruno probably put the record in the next couple of is Kevin DeBron have got the record of uh most assists in the Premier League at a club. I'm sure, I'm sure I've read somewhere like that. Um I think Bruno's three three off that, so he'll probably get more at the weekend.
SPEAKER_02So I we should have had Palace, but obviously we're down at Wembley for the League Cup final. I'm very much looking forward to that. Do you think Arsenal are gonna win that game then? I can't wait. I'm hosting the fan zone down there, so that's gonna be top.
SPEAKER_01Because I just I'll just say as a side note here, um, because there will be people who go, oh god, yeah. Just reminder, if you're playing fantasy football, Arsenal and City aren't playing this week, so we need to we need to take your players out. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So talk to me about the um the league cup. So does it mean anything to you?
SPEAKER_02Well, well, yeah, of course it does. It means everything. What would a ridiculous question? It means everything. It means any cup final, it means something to you. Of course it does. You want to go down there, you want to win it. And also the significance of this game, like I said, in the title race, I still think because we've got a game in hand, because we've still got to play Arsenal, that gap then becomes three points. And if we win this game at the weekend, I think it could have a big effect into uh the outcome of the title.
SPEAKER_01So you've you've been employed to go down there. So you're doing the fan zone?
SPEAKER_02I'm doing the fan zone.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so what do you have to do in this part? Yeah, you have to G up for the players.
SPEAKER_02Hype everyone up, not the players, just the fans. Have a little bit of fun, do some giveaways, yeah, get drunk, have a good time. Yeah, and um we're interviewing Sean Wright Phillips again, so we're gonna have another uh round of Sean E right, right, right, guess he's high, high, high, which is uh an absolute crowd favourite, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But you do understand there are there are more ex-Man City players than just Sean Wright Phillips. Yeah, I know. Well, there's loads of people gonna be there.
SPEAKER_02We're speaking to I can't remember, but there's we've got quite a few ex-players coming down, which is what it's all about, these fanzones. All the ex-persones, probably get games, to be honest. They they come down, they have a chat, we have a laugh, we do some giveaways, and it's great. It's always good fun. There's a lot of live music and stuff, it's great.
SPEAKER_01So if you see Niges, go and see him, uh go and go and go and say, go and say hello, and they give you a I'll tell you what, when I went to City, he gave me a food voucher. He went, Ego, mate, it's a food voucher. So I went up to go and use it, and the woman, and the woman said, she goes, she goes, Oh, I can't take that off your love. I said, Why? I thought, oh, she's gonna go, oh no, save it for your friends for another day. She went, um, it's only valid before kickoff. Just give it him an half time. Yeah, just£48.50, please, for that burger and pulling. That's great. So, right, in all seriousness, let's let's let's put it down there now. Right. Uh League Cup, Sunday. 430 on Sunday. Score prediction, please, Nigel.
SPEAKER_02City three, Arsenal one. A new scoring? Come on, just come on. I think Haaland will get two. And it's really hard because I don't know who else will play. Um I reckon Haaland will get two, maybe Diaz will score.
SPEAKER_01Two-one Arsenal.
SPEAKER_02Right, okay.
SPEAKER_01And generally two-one Arsenal. I think you'll go one-nil up as well. And you are the new sort of Spurs, aren't you, Botlin? So I I think you'll go you'll go up early and you'll be 1-0 up and you'll be all cocky in there.
SPEAKER_02We'll see.
SPEAKER_01GG Dollar Rummer will be playing the halfway line like Pickford. Max Dowman.
SPEAKER_02I reckon he'll have a worldly Dollar Rummer.
SPEAKER_01Do you reckon? Oh, it'll be on fire at the weekend. He's getting sent off.
SPEAKER_02You know he's not.
SPEAKER_01He's getting sent off. He's not. All right, man. Stop putting things like that out there as well. That's just yeah, just horrible. It's masturbate that he gets sent off. Is there anything else you want to talk about this week, Nights?
