Intro

SPEAKER_00

Hello and welcome back to the show. As always, I'm your driver Spencer, sitting shotgun is Breck, and this week we're the podcast asking the important questions. Like, should we do a retrospective on all of season two of Supernatural? Play some games, have some fun. This is Be Afraid of the Dark. We're here, season two retrospective.

SPEAKER_03

I can't believe we already are on season two retrospective.

SPEAKER_00

I'm wearing my silly supernatural shirt.

SPEAKER_03

We saw it in Hot Topic and it came home.

SPEAKER_00

And it came home because I needed a supernatural shirt. I like it. I want to get a subtle one.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I want us to have merch because I we have ideas. We have thoughts.

SPEAKER_03

Thoughts on ideas for sure.

SPEAKER_00

But anyway, so this is season two of supernatural. I I guess first question is how you doing? How you feeling?

SPEAKER_03

Um, it's a bummer.

SPEAKER_00

Emotional turmoil of the season, it feels like a big one.

SPEAKER_03

Summer season.

SPEAKER_00

Like it's even more emotional than season one.

SPEAKER_03

I would agree. Uh season one is like fun chiefly because there's a mystery, and you're like, d- die. We gotta go find our dad. And then season two is like everything is terrible.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dad's dead. There's a demon who has this, and I have powers, and we're running into other people with powers, and death follows me everywhere I go. Yes, yeah. That is the contemplative question of this season is death follows me everywhere I go.

SPEAKER_03

Genuinely, I love Sam so much. Death does follow him everywhere he goes.

SPEAKER_00

Unfortunately, we we are we're we're we're we're lovers of these Winchester boys, and it is unfortunate that because of circumstances out of their control. Yes. Um well, okay, so where do you want to start here? I I think we'll uh so the schedule of this is we're just gonna generally talk about it. We're gonna you know ask each other some questions, figure out how we feel about it, the the structure of the season, the character arcs, that kind of thing. We will do uh our top five favorite episodes of the season, and then we will do our bracket, our end of the season kill bracket to see what is the competitive this year. It will be more competitive this year. There's several. There's like three or four real big contenders for me this season. So we'll see how they all seed out and which ones end up where. And uh it's gonna be exciting. So we'll figure out what the best kill of the season is, and we'll uh you know kind of tell you moving forward what our schedule is gonna be. You know, as always, we'll take kind of a month off after this to recoup before season three, which will be a shorter season. Yeah. Okay, so I I just want to start this, I guess, by reading off the episode titles and just giving you a a scope, giving everyone a bird's eye view scope of the the quality of this season. Okay, it is in uh episode one, in my time of dying. Episode two, everybody loves a clown, episode three, bloodlust, episode four, children shouldn't play with dead things, episode five, Simon said, Episode six, no exit, seven, the usual suspects, eight crossroad blues, nine, crowatoin, ten, hunted, eleven playthings, twelve night shifter, thirteen, houses of the holy, fourteen, born under a bad sign, fifteen tall tales, sixteen is roadkill, seventeen is heart, eighteen is Hollywood Babylon, nineteen is fulsom prison blues, fulsom prison blues. I can't do it.

SPEAKER_03

It's a hard word to say.

SPEAKER_00

Uh uh prison's not a hard word to say, it's the succession of those words. Anyway, uh 20, what is and what should never be, 21 and 22, all hell breaks loose, part one and two. Uh it's a sacked season. Making the top five for this one was infinitely harder for me than making the top five for season one. Even though I don't know if I like season two more than season one. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I think it depends. They're different moods. Yeah. And you know, we joke a lot about how eternally it is autumn in in Supernatural. But season one really feels like autumn to me, and this season really felt like winter to me in a way. Can't explain why. A little rainier. It's a little rainier, a little snowier. We get like actual snow in this one.

SPEAKER_00

Do we?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, in Roadkill.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. We got well, there's one snow episode. It's the the vampire one in season one.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, true.

SPEAKER_00

But this kind of doesn't really count. There's only like three scenes of snow. Anyway.

SPEAKER_03

But anyways, it's just it's a it's it's a different vibe. Yeah. So the vibe is a little it's like with any good sequel, even though it's a season two. Yeah. It's a little meaner, it's a little nastier, it's gotta get a little more gritty. Yes. So I I really enjoyed this season. I it had pretty much there was never an episode where I was like, eh.

SPEAKER_00

No, they legitimately I will give it that over season one. As season one has like one or two episodes, and I'm like, I don't love this. Uh season two does not. Every episode in season two kind of rocks. Some didn't hold up as well, like everybody loves a clown is one that's like really burned into my brain, but it didn't, it wasn't quite as good on a rewatch for me. Um and then more others that I appreciated a lot more, like Heart, I think I appreciated more now as a you know, more fully functioning human being who isn't a teenager, like get back to the killing monsters.

SPEAKER_03

Like Um, who cares that you're having sex and being in love?

SPEAKER_00

So let's talk about like arcs and stuff. So um this season, for me, the arc is Dean and his self-hatred, and he loses that in the end. Like he loses that contest with his inner self. Yes. And then season uh and then Sam's is keeping his humanity. And I think for the most part, he keeps it. They question it at the end, they question like is everything that got came back Sam? Like, is that actually what it is? Um who knows, right?

SPEAKER_03

Like I think.

SPEAKER_00

But that to me, those are the two like uh inner turmoils of the winter's.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, of our emotional side plots, those are the two most important things going on. And we'll get into this more in later seasons, but you will never, ever, ever catch me judging Sam for the way he has to behave in the next couple of seasons.

SPEAKER_00

No, yeah, my boy goes through it.

SPEAKER_03

As um as a Tumblr post once said, if you start Supernatural with season four and you don't like Sam, that's your fault. You started during his hot girl summer.

SPEAKER_00

That's really funny.

SPEAKER_03

True, like I'm like, you didn't get to understand that Sam has this beautiful, ongoing, like struggle. Struggle, and he doesn't even know like for most of this season that it's because he has demon blood. Like we're we're really gonna have to.

SPEAKER_00

And don't quite know the extent of what that can do or what it will lead to.

SPEAKER_03

Just that we can figure out all those him and all those other children had demon blood inside of them, and that's why they have these, you know, psychic powers and things like that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and so like this season also ends in a cool way where like the army has been let loose on the world, but their general is dead. They're their uh high commander or whatever, you know, like the the in Star Wars terms, the high chancellor of the emperor has is gone. Deemed would be so and the general Jake in this instance is dead. So they they there's an army on earth, and there's gonna be some power struggle in the next season to figure out who's taking control and who can you trust and who can you not. I'm looking forward to that all that season three is crazy because season three was a writer's strike season, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, season three was cut short because of the writer's strike.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely insane that it is still as good as it is.

SPEAKER_03

It is insane. Like I was looking at the lineup of episodes, and I was like, oh, I'm so fucking excited.

SPEAKER_00

Genuinely insane how many of them.

SPEAKER_03

I cannot wait for Bella to come back.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I can't wait for um many of us, but we're not talking about that, we're talking about season. Yes, sorry. Two anyway, so yeah, those are the two arcs for me is you know, self-hatred and then am I a monster or am I not a monster? Right? And Sam proves over and over again that he's not a monster, and then he does one violent thing, and they're like, whoa, no.

SPEAKER_03

And I'm like, leave him alone.

SPEAKER_00

The guy stabbed him literally in the spine, and he's trying to open it.

SPEAKER_03

If you're allowed to kill a guy that it it tried to kill you, yeah. I think that's fine.

SPEAKER_00

It's fine, it's all good. And he wasn't, yeah. Anyway, but this season also introduces, you know, and we talked a lot about this in season one of like the grander world of supernatural is not really out there. Like, we kind of assume that there's only a handful of hunters. This really opens that up with Ellen and Joe and more Bobby and the Roadhouse Ash and the concept of hunters bars and the Gordon, they like meet a hunter on the road and tag team, which becomes kind of a thing they'll do on and off throughout the series occasionally. So I think that is a really interesting um and smart choice to make, right? Like you have to broaden it, you have to make it bigger. Yeah. So they do that through the roadhouse. And I think the roadhouse is a great invention, and they uh burn it down this season, which is just tragic.

SPEAKER_03

But I think they were probably like, we can't keep coming back here. Do you think they were like that?

SPEAKER_00

What do you think is well that's that's the funny thing is it's it from a television scheduling standpoint, way smarter to have a dedicated set that you're returned to quite a bit. Because then you just because they shoot these kind of vaguely out of order, like they try to keep episodes but scheduling and actors and side actors, so a lot of the side feels like. We'll we'll talk about that. We'll talk about that.

SPEAKER_03

But it's so it's just yeah, it's not yeah, that does now that you're mentioned, I'm like, yeah, that does not make sense at all that they would burn double regular set.

SPEAKER_00

I like that it's a riskier choice, it's a less safe choice because this show is predicated on being on the road, you're in a different motel room every week. Yeah. Well, those motel rooms a lot are like made of like they're sets. So they're made of Hollywood walls that you can like pull apart, repaint, readjust the layout, change the bedding, change the bed frame, and it's a new set. All you're really doing is uh um adjusting it and changing. You're not fully ground up rebuilding. Now, sometimes you are. It feels like every season they have one where they're really boring. Yeah, with the really fun disco ones. So it's like the disco one, and then in this one it's um Houses of the Holy. Yeah. With the magic fingers and the weird, like it's bizarre.

SPEAKER_03

Like yeah, the weird, like sexy strip club attire. No, if we really want to get down to brass tacks about it, the only true recurring set they have is the inside of baby.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. For now. For now. Um, okay, so well, let's talk about this. Since we talked about all these side characters that get added, who are some of your favorites? What are Joe?

SPEAKER_03

My queen. Joe, don't I wanted to be her so bad when I first watched the show. I was like, this is who I'm gonna be. Yeah. I love her. I'm a big deal.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna work in bars and I'm gonna hunt monsters.

SPEAKER_03

And like, and I was like, and this is a normal thing I can do with my life. Um no.

SPEAKER_00

Joe's great. I love Joe.

SPEAKER_03

Joe's great, but it pretty much her and I love Ellen. I love Ellen, but Ash really, I'm just I'm really depressed that Ash is gone.

SPEAKER_00

Ash being gone is a huge bummer. They they definitely fill that void in within season. I can't remember if he comes in season three or four, but there's a character that's gonna come uh that fills that kind of like goofier guy void, but he's still in the world.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean, there's gonna we'll have a couple characters that come in and fill the void, but Ash was just really fun.

SPEAKER_00

He's he's special. He's the first one that's like the tech guy, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03

Like Yeah, it's you don't, you know, as they say, the guy in the chair. Yes. Sam and Dean do not often have a guy in the chair.

SPEAKER_00

They have Bobby, who's the guy in the scrapyard. But uh I I I love I love Joe. I've always been very partial to Ellen. I think even in high school, I was like, Ellen's awesome.

SPEAKER_03

She runs this bar and she's just like now that I'm an adult, I'm like, I need to be Ellen.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, this needs to be me. I need to be the no nonsense lady that runs the bar, and I'm super cool, but I also am nice and soft when I need to be. And then, of course, the trickster.

SPEAKER_00

Hell yeah, the trickster. Are you kidding me?

SPEAKER_03

The trickster, oh man. I was like, wait, but I thought and then and then at the end of that episode, him being like, ne, ne, I'm alive, and I'm like, my goat.

SPEAKER_00

Fantastic.

SPEAKER_03

My goat.

SPEAKER_00

So, yeah, the well, the trickster, uh talking villains as well. I mean, you have Gordon and you have Henriksen. Yes. As these reoccurring, we drop in two, like uh Gordon's in jail, they leave that on a question mark of whether or not he can come back, and then uh Henriksen's hot on their tail. And that is the one that I I really don't remember where this goes with Henriksen. I kind of until we got to Night Shifter, fully forgot about that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, well, I mean, he popped up, and then it's the same with every episode we watch where I see one shot of an episode. I'm like, I remember exactly what happens.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, because it's just locked in my brain.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but I can't wait to get to the later seasons where we're we're both less knowledgeable and we're just gonna be like, I don't remember this happening at all.

SPEAKER_02

Someone brought up an episode on Twitter today where I was like, damn, I forgot about that one. But that's uh that's in the midst of season seven or eight, I think.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh so yeah, we have these two villains, and that's gonna go forward. So I think now before we talk about some of the like one-off characters that show up in episodes, how do you feel about them taking out yellow eyes in season two?

SPEAKER_03

I think it's actually the perfect spot. I don't think they could have I don't think he could have worn his welcome any longer.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's in it way less than I remember.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, he's in it a lot less than I remember.

SPEAKER_00

But I think cumulatively like five episodes, maybe something like that.

SPEAKER_03

And if you're watching this, you should know by now that Eric Kripke like only planned for five seasons. Like there's so this is actually this is pretty much the the end of the beginning here. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like this is the From here on out, things change. Yeah, we get way more demon focused for the next season and then way more biblical focus for the next two.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, like you become way more the this was this was not not necessarily a teaser, but it was the it was the warm-up for bringing on the idea of the apocalypse.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. And by the way, uh a lot of people don't love the biblical era of supernatural. I'm sorry, I do. It's fine. I like they still integrate a ton of monsters, but they introduce really great characters. Like there, I think there's two subsecs of the like the quote unquote the fandom. And there are those who hate the biblical stuff, and then there are those who skip re-watching seasons one through three and just start at season four, episode one for reasons we won't say now, which is absolutely crazy, genuinely crazy.

SPEAKER_03

Get to get it together.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I'm missing out. I like the biblical stuff, and then because in later seasons they do become the this one's a monster season, and this one's a this season, and this one's that season, which I do enjoy. Like season one through five are the only ones with this like continuing, you know, there may be different villains, there may be different themes, but it does feel like we're all building to something. Like season one is okay, we gotta find dad, there's this cult, there's this demon. What is this demon? One he's creating psychic children. Season two is from a plot perspective, okay, here's what he was doing. He succeeds, but he dies doing it. Yeah. Now, how do we deal with the aftermath? What did he want these, you know? Does he just want to wreak havoc on Earth, or is there a grander plan still? And that's what season three becomes about. Yeah. Is stopping this thing and finding out, oh, there's a grander plan. Yeah. There's other forces at work. And I think that's, you know, after that it becomes we beat this villain this season, we beat this villain this season, which by the way, don't mind. I don't mind that at all. No. That's very much a TV thing. I'm very into that. It just is different than you know, your season one through five build.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, agree. Yeah. So okay. Almost like that was when the show was supposed to be.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but no, we I mean, I think the later seasons get a bad rap.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they do. Some of them do, some of them don't. Like anyway, uh, we're gonna get through them all. Uh, unless the network cancels us. Tell your friends to watch this.

SPEAKER_02

We will never be cancelled. I love yapping.

SPEAKER_00

She does love yapping. Anyway, we've done this exact exchange before. Uh, I promise we don't write these. Uh okay, so now let's talk about just kind of go through episodes. Some of your favorite off the top of your head, like one-off characters that show up in an episode. They can come back later, they cannot come back later. But in terms of like this season, they're in like one episode. You know, they're a side character they run in.

SPEAKER_03

Trickster, obviously. Trickster's great. Madison from heart. Madison is a great one. Loved her.

SPEAKER_00

Um I'm really partial to Ron and Night Shifter. Yes. Love Ron. That dude is just, he didn't deserve what he got. Yeah. Uh he deserved to be a man in the chair. He did good work. He was just not a not a practical reader.

SPEAKER_03

We need fanfiction of him just getting to live and being a fun guy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, just being somebody Sam and Dean run into once every time.

SPEAKER_03

He actually helps them escape. He figures out how to technol technologicalize everything to make them be able to, anyways. Um it doesn't count, but they're contained to the season. So can I say the the special children, particularly Ava and then um Andy?

SPEAKER_00

Ava and Andy They're both dead now. They're both dead now, they will never be back.

SPEAKER_03

Andy, I love, because Andy is just he's goofy and funny, and like is like, can I have a coffee?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, I'm obsessed with him.

SPEAKER_00

Um I love that they gave a dude like the most pervy, creepy power, and he just uses it to be like a chill guy. Yeah. Like he does dumb things, he does immature things, but he's not like a lot of abusing people all the time.

SPEAKER_03

He does it to evade paying his bills, which isn't something I'll never be like, how dare you! Yeah, right, yeah, right. Just to evade paying his bills and live in his van and smoke. Yeah. It's awesome. Like I knew 20 guys like that in college, anyways. Um, like, but and Ava, and I know I just also love Catherine Isabel.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I know I just but she's she's given great performance.

SPEAKER_03

She's giving a great she is like a charm bomb to me.

SPEAKER_00

It is it's really fun. If you watch the blooper reel for this, they just keep cutting to her, like doing her different screams. Yeah. And then when the last time you see her in the boober, she's like, This is the most fun I've ever had in my entire life. And you're like, I I bet I bet Supernatural is an awesome set of things.

SPEAKER_03

I bet like everyone who's ever worked on it has said it's the most fun and that you can goof off and have so much fun. And then everyone locks in like that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's it feels when you do a show for that long, that crew, like the directors who come in, like uh Kevin Smith tells a really funny story about directing um some of the CW uh like DC show. So we went and did like an episode of The Flash or Super, or she was Supergirl. And so when you do that, you have to go in with this meeting, but you have to remember directors are not it's not a it's a writer's medium.

SPEAKER_03

It's a writer's medium.

SPEAKER_00

Directors are there just to kind of guide the ship onset. And in reality, it's the first AD.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Look up his story about going and getting burgers during the production. He's like, it's the wide, I'll be here for the close-ups, right? Because the performances are what they're there for. They're there to kind of go, oh, well, you know, here's a note, here's this. Keep this in mind. Everyone else plans everything because they literally go, so we're gonna do this one. Or does that sound cool, Kev? He's like, This sounds awesome, right? Great story. I think Supernatural in the early seasons, a little different because they have a lot of reoccurring directors, you know. People who set the look, people who really push the look, and they're not afraid to change it. No. Like the the color grade will stay the same, and most of the shot composition styles stay the same, but they're not afraid to do weird, cool transitions and things out of the norm. Yeah, I mean, or really steer into apples.

SPEAKER_03

I particularly love when Kim Manners and Robert Singer direct an episode just because I think they do phenomenal, phenomenal work. But yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Any um any particular favorite like one-off villains, any particular favorite hunts of this, you know, not not maybe not the episode, or it could be the episode, but like this was the monster we hunted this week. This was one of my favorites.

SPEAKER_03

This wasn't in my list of my favorite episodes, but Bloodlust, I really love the kind of the switcheroo of it all of, you know, what it you're like, oh my god, like this woman is being killed, but she's a vampire. And then they're they're the good vampires and they're the Cullens and like all this other stuff. Like, and then Gordon is like again, it's it's another The human is the monster. Yes. Which I think is really interesting too, considering that, you know, like you said, like the the emotional subplot of this season is that Dean hates himself and Sam is afraid of being a monster.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But in Bloodlust, it's really this like Dean giving into these darker impulses and Sam being scared. Yeah. Which is an interesting, like I don't know, it's just an interesting beat in that that part of the journey of that.

SPEAKER_00

So um I really like Crow Toen's villain, like the idea of the town as the villain. Um, the H.H. Holmes is like still questionable morally, but they do fun stuff with that.

SPEAKER_02

They do fun. He's in the goddamn walls.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, literally, like it's it that's a good time. Uh the gin is a good good. The gin is really fun. Sets up a good like scary time kind of.

SPEAKER_03

Sets up a good scary time and also made me incredibly and deeply emotional.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, and then just the idea of a trickster, you know, the idea of just like this all-powerful being that's just goofing off is uh will never not be a fun concept to me.

SPEAKER_03

No, I also love that everything he makes is real.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's just awesome.

SPEAKER_00

It's fantastic. He's just cool.

SPEAKER_03

Um okay, so Oh wait, I have a fun question. What is your favorite? Do you have a favorite out-of-the-box kill from this or out of the box, but out of the ordinary kill? Yeah, like what's a fun, like, because sometimes they have like, oh, it's the weirdest, randomest thing we can kill them with. Like, what's do you have a favorite from this season?

SPEAKER_00

Do you have one? I do. What is it?

SPEAKER_03

Tell me your it's the stake in the lamb's blood for the djinn.

SPEAKER_00

It's like a weapon to end something? That's interesting. Um I'm kind of partial to staking the zombie into the gr it's resting place. That's a close one for me, too. That's a fun one. Because it's so specific. Like if you use a silver stake to lock it in place and then it dies, and you're like, And then they're like, and that's where we get the myth for vampires from. Like it's very fun to me. Um Tall Tail has it's just a stake, right? They just have to kill it with a stake. Um Dipped in Lamb's Blood is that's a really good one. Uh they do a lot with it.

SPEAKER_03

I like when it's specific. I like when it's not just, and that's why it's so funny because I like when it's specific, because then it leads to Dean and Hart being like, it's so nice that I know exactly what to do here. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's a great moment. It's like we already know how to kill him. It's great.

SPEAKER_03

It's great. It's awesome. I have to do zero homework.

SPEAKER_00

He doesn't have to do the party gates the most, which is the homework. Yeah, it's fantastic.

SPEAKER_03

Which is funny because once he gets into homework, he loves it.

SPEAKER_00

He's very good at it.

SPEAKER_03

He's really good at it. It's just he would rather let Sam do it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh I mean, untraditional weapon is not killing H.H. Holmes, too, where they like lock him into a prison. I think that's a cool one.

SPEAKER_03

The iron and the salt and the cement. It's very fun.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Ava using a demon as like an attack dog is I like that too. That's a cool idea. Um, as she sits there and like slowly is like, I have to use my force powers. Um, any other like grander season things? I mean, comparative to see oh, I want to talk about the structure of this season, just real quick. The structure is super weird because like episode one is obviously episode one, it deals, it sets up the stage. Then we have a couple of episodes where we're like, we meet the roadhouse, they're dealing with their issues, and then it's there's not a lot of like mystery unfolding in this one. It's mostly like we meet some of the psychic kids along the way, and they become the part that's like this is this. There's not a ton of figuring out what the yellow-eyed demon wants. Like, Meg reveals a tiny bit of it when she possesses Sam. Uh, Sam as an unconventional weapon is good. Also, she's using Sam as a weapon. That's a fun episode.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah, I don't, I don't know. The oh whiskey uh shot glasses with holy water in it. That's a good one. Yeah, uh the structure of this one is a little odd. There's not a lot revealed a lot. Like it's it's very like you get like a hint here of like this is a psychic kid, we don't know. Oh, there's a war coming. We don't know why.

SPEAKER_03

The middle of this season is a little more disjointed than it was there was a but it there's also less of a concrete goal, I think, for this season.

SPEAKER_00

That is that is what it is, right? They're they want to find the yellow ideum, but they set that up with Ash at the beginning in his algorithm. And then they don't bring that up again.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and then mostly it's just they they stumble into finding uh a psychic child and have to then do but it that's not a complaint, it's just uh uh uh worth noting that like it is good to have a care, like a very clear thesis of this is the plot, which is like season one is we need to find tab. Right? And so then all the this uh one-off episodes and all the you know it's a full one-off episode, and at the end, you know, oh your dad's voicemail. He's like voicemail, and you told me to call you, right? That's a hint, and then we move on from there, and then they have to go home and we see John there. Like season one is way more um how did it explain it? Season two is is a bit more like there is a plot going on, we're just not revealing very much of it. Yeah, and then season one is the plot is really simple. We there's not we don't know a ton yet. Yeah, but oh no, Sam's starting to have visions, that complicates it. Does that have anything to do with this?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, like I would describe it as the the question is simple in season one, but the answer isn't, and then the question in season two is very complex, but the answer is simple.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like the the question is very simple in season one, where's dad? We need to find dad. Yes, but it's a deeply complicated thing about what's going on there. And then season two, it's an incredibly complicated, like, we don't know why or how, but we have to find the yellow eyed demon and kill him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I I think that's how I would put that.

unknown

Yeah.

Q&A

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, uh, great season of TV. Great season of TV. So now we're gonna take some fan questions. Very excited about that. And uh here we go. And we're here in the QA section. Uh eagle-eyed viewers may notice that we are in different clothes talking to you from the future. We recorded that other part, the main episode in the past, and then waited for questions to come in, and now we are here. Yeah, uh, you may also spot some changes to the board. That's a little uh preview for season three, which we are in the middle of recording right now. So there you go. All right, season two questions from the fans. What do we got?

SPEAKER_03

I hope you guys are fans. Um, I have some pretty good questions here. Okay, so this one's from Kendra.com on TikTok. We have what has been y'all's favorite episode so far, and which episode are y'all most looking forward to what rewatching?

SPEAKER_00

Hmm. Hmm. In terms of rewatching, I mean Mystery Spot is coming up.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we greatly enjoyed that one.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Mr. Ghost Facers is coming up. I'm very excited about Ghost Facers.

SPEAKER_03

I'm really excited to see season four opener again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Lazarus Lazarus Rising. Very excited. We're getting close. Uh that's that's definitely up there. Uh, Swan Song is at the end of season five. I'm very much looking forward to that.

SPEAKER_03

Um, this is way ahead in the future. Way, way ahead. But season 11. I love Baby, the episode where we're entirely in the car. I think that's one of the best episodes of the show. Um I'm really looking forward to the musical episode from season 10 when they go see the kids putting on the musical based on the books. Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I forgot about it.

SPEAKER_03

It's a classic. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I'm also looking forward to Scooby Natural.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, Scooby Natural for sure.

SPEAKER_00

So Scooby Natural is life. I'm very excited about that.

SPEAKER_03

A I believe season 11 werewolf episode that I'm really looking forward to, that I can't, for the life of me, remember the name of right now. But I know the director was a woman and that she does like other horror films, which I think is cool.

SPEAKER_00

Well, uh, what about uh favorite episodes?

SPEAKER_03

Favorite episodes so far is really hard. I mean, really hard.

SPEAKER_00

The pilot. I just listed a couple I mean for me, the pilot.

SPEAKER_03

The pilot um Faith comes to mind immediately.

SPEAKER_00

Isn't an immediate up there one? Uh season two, I could look at my journal, but season two.

SPEAKER_03

I guess our journals are right there. Um I really, really, really enjoyed um Bloodlust.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, I think it's a good one. Bloodlust is up there is a really good one.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you. I was sitting here, I was like, blood, the blood, the blood. Um, I really enjoyed the finale of season two again. Um what is the other one I like love? Oh, the original vampire episode where they meet back up with John again is a great one.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Home is a great one.

SPEAKER_00

The the issue is the show is my favorite episode. Outside of bugs, there's not really an episode that I haven't just kind of vibed with super hard in the first two seasons.

SPEAKER_03

My ongoing justice for bugs.

SPEAKER_00

I know. Anyway, uh uh who said who gave us that question by the way.

SPEAKER_03

Rachel.com.

SPEAKER_00

Rachel.com.

SPEAKER_03

No, sorry, Kendra.com.

SPEAKER_00

Kendra.com. On TikTok.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, Queen.

SPEAKER_00

Um, great. Enjoy your PFP. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Next question from Bad Blooms on YouTube. Who do you believe is the best written slash most underutilized side character we've been introduced to so far? My personal choice is Andy. I would have been thrilled to have five more seasons of him. And I have to agree with you.

SPEAKER_00

Andy's great. Andy's great. If we're talking about best written, Andy's up there. He's complex, he's human. I I like Andy. Uh in terms of like one-off characters, I really, I really liked Ron.

SPEAKER_03

Ron was great. Um, my first ones that came to mind were um Catherine Isabel, R.I.P., Eva. Um, and then I really, really liked um Sam's her name's Sarah, I think, in the haunted painting episode. Yeah. I really like her. I think she's great. Um, I think her name's Sarah, the character. Um she rocks.

SPEAKER_00

I for me, I think the end all be all of like, man, what could have been if we had you for longer? At least early supernatural.

SPEAKER_03

Ash. It's Ash. It's Ash.

SPEAKER_00

Ash tickled my funny bone in a way that like I wasn't ready for.

SPEAKER_03

Rest in peace, my king.

SPEAKER_00

So Ash is up there for me. He's definitely like. But in in terms of like written, again, written, I think Andy is the right answer. I think Andy's Andy's quite fun as a character.

SPEAKER_03

That's what I said, like him or Catherine is at least one other special child that got to survive. Because you're telling me, so you know, we established and and we just established just with you, as you just watched these last two episodes, um, that you know, Ava was working her way through groups of the children. You're telling me that was all of the children? There weren't more?

SPEAKER_00

I'm sure there were more, but you know, they there's nothing to manifest their powers, no.

SPEAKER_03

True, but it would have been it would have been really cool to have another special person on the team, or just like or even if they had gotten to be antagonists longer.

SPEAKER_00

We we get some special people.

SPEAKER_03

We do.

SPEAKER_00

We do. Anyway, uh uh yeah, that those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Um as the show goes on more and more come into the fold where it's like, I wish we had you for longer.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, no. I really wow, I'm like f I I'm remembering that I just loved Sam's little girl turtle. Girl turtle? I was trying to say boy toy with the girl version.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, totally.

SPEAKER_03

My girl turtle, you know how it is, but um she was great. I thought her I thought she was great.

SPEAKER_00

Got another question?

SPEAKER_03

I do. I have one last question for us from Rachel B. 3234. K, but how many times is Dean a Jesus slash savior archetype in this season? And is it at least once every episode?

SPEAKER_00

That's a fascinating because if I am gonna read it, I'm gonna read it as Sam is the Jesus.

SPEAKER_03

That's what I think.

SPEAKER_00

Jesus slash savior, but in reverse, right? Where it's like he he is uh a la Jesse Pinkman. Yes, he is um kind of the dark version of a Jesus figure. Yes. He's the dark version of a savior figure. Agreed. But he's rejecting that role because he's a good person. Yes. That's my take. I don't think it's Dean, I think it's Sam.

SPEAKER_03

Agree.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's Sam.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And then, you know, of course, and we've established already that they have a pattern of already going to hell and back literally for each other. But I wouldn't I'd yeah, I'd have to agree with everything that we know. I don't think I don't think Dean is ever a Jesus archetype. I think he is a savior archetype for sure.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I think he's, you know, we again we've we've established he's, you know, Daddy's blunt little instrument, but that's for later. That's a teaser for you. Um but yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, we did three questions. We want to do more of these. Leave more questions as the seasons go on, and we will do this at the end of next season. Uh, and it will be very fun. Anyway.

SPEAKER_03

Honestly, feel free to, you know, on any episode, you can comment, you know, for the QA at the end of the season. Here's my question. It doesn't just have to be on our retrospectives or on our final episodes or anything.

SPEAKER_00

So we would love to do a full QA episode.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we would love to be able to do that or you know, go live on TikTok and chit-chat with everybody and talk shop.

SPEAKER_00

So anyway, uh yeah, now back to those other bozos in the past who have no idea that we actually did this.

SPEAKER_03

Those losers wearing cold weather clothes.

Top 5 Episodes

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm still wearing cold weather clothes and cut. Okay, are you ready to do top five best episodes of season two of Supernatural?

SPEAKER_03

Am I ever?

SPEAKER_00

Are you ever? Okay, so um I think we need to be clear here. We're not gonna do like if my number five is your number three, don't say that. We'll get to your number three. We can talk a bit about it now, and then you can go in more into depth when we get there, just in case. So uh do you want to go first or you want me to go first? Starting with five.

SPEAKER_03

I'll go first. Okay. Number five is Simon said.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, yeah, that's a great one. Oh, wait, sorry, let's do some honorable mentions.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, honorable mentions for me. Uh In My Time of Dying is really good. Bloodlust is really good, No Exit is really good. I'm cross-referencing my two lists. Crowatoan is really good. Um I think Hunted is a really good episode. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Uh for me, another honorable mention would be Hollywood Babylon.

SPEAKER_00

Hollywood Babylon's super fun.

SPEAKER_03

Um and Folsom Prison Blues. Super. Just because I I really enjoyed both of those. But other than that, you said the ones that I would have been mine.

SPEAKER_00

This season's so good that like of 22 episodes, I legitimately was like struggling with more than half of them. To be like, are these on my tough phone?

SPEAKER_03

And we still had to combine the part one and two of All Hell Breaks Loose.

SPEAKER_00

So Yeah. Both Gordon episodes really came close for me. Like those are like skirting the line. I love Sterling K. Brown, and I just think he's he's great for the show.

SPEAKER_03

You know, and we talk a lot about great voices in Hollywood. He's got one of the great voices.

SPEAKER_00

He is one of the most like suave men, and he's so cool.

SPEAKER_03

Read a book to me.

SPEAKER_00

I know. Okay, uh, you're number five.

SPEAKER_03

Uh Simon said.

SPEAKER_00

Simon said, great.

SPEAKER_03

So I just really love this. It was an episode I always loved too when I was like a teenager and watching this show, and then re-watching it, it really held up for me because the deaths are still so scary. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, some of the scariest. Oh, we I talk about you asked the question of like unconventional weapons. Yeah, I mean the the fire, the gas station.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the fire at the gas station. Like it's it's got a lot of really creepy stuff in it to me, but it's also a good fun episode of like I love that Dean loves this guy. Like he's like, he's kind of fun, he's kind of awesome, dude. Like, and but it's also got this cool, like creepy, like evil twin thing, and that they like lampshade and they're like, he's like, I can't believe I have an evil twin. Yeah. It's got like a twin. And it's got like this this and you know, we talked about like, oh, it's crazy how Andy has this power that should make him a total creepazoid, and he's just kind of a chill guy, and then his evil twin is a total creepazoid. Yeah, like they don't shy away from the fact that a man would use this to be evil. And it's just I really love it, it's held up really well for me.

SPEAKER_00

This is a great episode. The only reason it's not in my top five is I bump a little bit on how dark they get at the end with the like, you know, he's like, you know, they enjoy it because I tell them to like that that bit why I I have a harder time with that now than I think as a teenager where you can't conceptualize these things. Like now I'm like, oh my god, that's what whoa, like yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You're not like when you're a teenager watching it, you're not quite getting it.

SPEAKER_00

When you're an edgelord teenager, you're like, he's so villainy. I hate this guy. And now you're just like, oh, he should die.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god, he was going to rape that poor lady. Like it's bad.

SPEAKER_00

Um, not great, not great, but it's still the episode as a whole is great, and I love Andy.

SPEAKER_03

And I I love it. Like, he's probably like I said, he's one of my favorite one-off characters from this season. Um, and then also the ending is really I love the ending of him being like, be good, Andy. And he's like, or what? And Dean's like, oh, we're coming back.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So uh that's great. Okay, my number five. Heart. Heart introduces just an absolutely terrifying, or not terrifying, but like heartbreak, well, terrifying situation, but like just a heartbreaking episode. It is uh our first werewolf episode, and I I do I do love werewolves. Love a werewolf. Uh it it's got a ton of fun stuff in it, it's got a weird structure to it. Um, good reversals. It really like the first time you'd watch this one, it'd be kind of hard to figure out exactly what's gonna happen. It's got a lot of ups, downs, hope, loss of hope, you know, and then that ending is just an all-timer supernatural. Yeah, it's so good. They kind of move on from it a little fast in the next episode, but that's the nature of television. She was a one-off character. Sam wasn't like in love with her, but he had feel really strong feelings for her. He cared about her, but it wasn't like that was the first time he didn't have enough time to develop into love. They just really cared about one another. Yeah. So it's a really good one. Um yeah, and I love Madison, I thought was a great following. Oh, she's great.

SPEAKER_03

She had such great chemistry with him. Yeah. They do a good job of there's a couple sometimes they don't, but sometimes Sam, I mean, usually it's Dean who gets like the kind of the more fleshed out love interest. But when Sam gets a good one, he gets a good one. Yeah, and like, you know, I felt about her how I felt about Sarah and the painting episode last season.

SPEAKER_00

Well, they all you know, they do that, and then they also um they introduce the you know the rock, paper, scissors running gag, which I mean uh will never not make me laugh.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, of course.

SPEAKER_00

So anyway, that's my number five. Do you have um your number four?

SPEAKER_03

My number four is art. Okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well then yeah, I'm just saying more on it.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, so it's just I I really love it. I love this is not even the biggest part of the episode, but I love that Sam gets into the soap opera.

SPEAKER_00

That whole section is so much fun where Dean's like out in the cold and hunting a monster, and Sam's like, I'm gonna sit on the colour.

SPEAKER_03

Let's not get too sad. Dean's also at the strip club.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, thank you. I forgot about that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he's also the like, yeah, my eyes are right on him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the handing her adolescent.

SPEAKER_03

Like, come on.

SPEAKER_00

Um crazy man.

SPEAKER_03

But I also think the heart is also, it's another kind of pretty gory episode. Like, I think it's probably one of the goriest of the season, with like the the hearts being ripped out and everything. Like her discovering the boss in the office at the beginning is like crazy.

SPEAKER_01

So good.

SPEAKER_03

I love it. I think it's a great episode. I was really excited when I figured out we were coming up to it. So I still love it. And she's just beautiful.

SPEAKER_00

She's great.

SPEAKER_03

Everyone in this episode is nice to look at.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Sam is particularly attractive this episode.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, that sex scene is crazy.

SPEAKER_00

It's nuts. Um, okay, my number four is what is and what should never be.

SPEAKER_03

Great choice.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, genuinely a heartbreaking episode, but it it doesn't it doesn't like beat you over the head with it. A lot of this episode is super fun.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

A lot of the the mystery is kind of whatever, like you know this isn't gonna continue, you know, it's it doesn't feel revolutionary, but it puts Dean through something and it makes Dean really come to terms with things.

SPEAKER_03

Supernatural put Dean through something?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I know, right? What? Um, but it brings back you know other cast members, and I think that's always fun. And uh, you know, his relationship with Sam and the necessity of hunting, keeping them close, and you know, it kind of as I said when we talked about that episode, this the the idea of like you know, you can't you can't keep longing for the past. You know, you have to kind of you know the more you pine after that, the more you realize you go back and you realize it's just not the same. Like it's it's not what you think it's gonna be. Changing one thing doesn't just alter your life. Every day is work, every day is putting in the effort. So I think it's a really good one.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's it's it proves to Dean that he could have had a different life, but it would have still been his job.

SPEAKER_00

And I just love the trope of the you know the hero having to choose to go back, you know, like oh everyone I saved isn't, but you know, that's not fair. Why does it have to be me? You know, but I really like that because then you know you go back and and he immediately saves someone's life, and it's really good stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Um my number three is Tall Tales. Ah just love it. It's just a perfect episode. It's all these jerks getting their comeuppance and introducing one of the best running characters. Introducing one of the best characters who also I had forgotten that he has like a little dog.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's like I'm obsessed with him.

SPEAKER_00

He's like he's such a weirdo.

SPEAKER_03

He's such a weirdo. I love that he has world weekly news, yeah. Or weekly world news, which I found out when I was reading on you know, Supernatural has its own TV Trobes page, and there's a recap page, and I go through and I make sure that there's things I'm not missing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and apparently that week that that episode came out, Supernatural was in Weekly World News.

SPEAKER_00

Fantastic, awesome.

SPEAKER_03

Which I thought was hilarious. Um, but it's just it's one of my favorite episodes. I was really excited to see it. And Dean, we don't have time for any of your blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Like it just genuinely fantastic. It's like it's so good. I just I was really excited to get there. It gave us one of our best, like the freeze frame on them fighting on the bed.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes. All of that stuff.

SPEAKER_03

It introduces bustyAsianbeauties.com.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, of course.

SPEAKER_03

Which is the one. And then I love that they call Bobby and Bobby's like, are you too fucking stupid?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Are you dumb? Yeah. Get it together.

SPEAKER_00

He's so mad. It's so funny. Okay, my number three is All Hell Breaks Loose, Part One and Two. We're cheating, we're having both, but they really do play as a one and two.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they're one and two.

SPEAKER_00

Um, that is just a deeply emotional episode, you know, and the the mystery in part one is awesome, and then the you know, the giant climax in the setting up of the next season, and you know, the emotional scenes between Sam and Dean, and Dean, you know, uh starting this trend of the Winchesters just throwing themselves recklessly and carelessly at saving one another becomes really apparent here. Um I think uh Jim Beaver is particularly great as Bobby in this episode. Uh and you know, just that climax is great, you know, just perfect. Sam being a little more ruthless and the you know, the culmination of this season uh seasons-long hunt for the yellow-eyed demon, and Dean getting to be the one to finish it and and win. Yeah, I I really like they they lose, but they do win, you know, and John getting, you know, they they get their final moment with their dad, which I know will make them feel better. Yeah. Um, and it's so it's always been one that I really uh really like. The the ending of this one's very memorable to me. I really like it. The idea, the all the lore of like the giant devil's gate, all that stuff is.

SPEAKER_03

It's one of the coolest things in the show. It's very speaking of unconventional weapons is your giant devil's trap connected by five churches, yeah, with iron and with iron railway. Samuel Cole was a freak.

SPEAKER_00

That dude's awesome. Do you I legitimately like there should be a show about building that? Genuinely, and I can't believe this season wasn't structured because they talked a lot about how different the the season was. Like Jeffrey Dean Morgan had to shoot six weeks before they shot it, so they had to shoot him on blue screen with just Jensen. Then they had to go shoot Jared's later alone because Jared was doing other episodes, and all of this stuff of having to put it together, and then they they lost their location outside, so they had to rebuild it, even though they shot Jeffrey Dean Morgan outside, or all of this stuff where they had to like recreate as best they could. How different, like the episode was originally, they were like, This is gonna be five hours long. There's no way this is impossible to do, and it was gonna be about them going to all these churches and having to destroy these ancient relics to destroy the gate. I can't believe that wasn't the impetus of the season. Now, I do think season four in particular, they that that's the idea of season four.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they get back into that.

SPEAKER_00

The the idea of having to hunt down certain things and do certain things to unleash something is something they use later, and I think they use it better later. I just can't believe this that wasn't the running arc of this, is that them discovering these churches and like what do the demons want this, I don't know, chalice for or something. Why'd they destroy just this? Stuff like that. I don't know. Could have been a good running gag for the season, but I'm glad they saved it for what they do later, but uh very interesting, great episode, fascinating special features on it. Go, oh if you have the DVD or the Blu-ray, go check those out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I I like kind of want to go back and just watch every single special feature we have. We only watched a couple because we were kind of getting through it, but yeah, we had that we had a bit on this.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Uh your number two?

SPEAKER_03

My number two is Night Shifter.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

My goat.

SPEAKER_00

Your beloved night shifter.

SPEAKER_03

My beloved night shifter. I just love, I mean, yeah. Program like, come on. Best. It's the best. We are so screwed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That episode rocks.

SPEAKER_03

Like, literally, what can I say?

SPEAKER_00

We love a bank robbery. We love a heist.

SPEAKER_03

There's nothing better than a heist, first of all. Every every single show should have a bank robbery episode and a prison episode. Yeah. And this season has both. Yeah. So incredible. Um, and like you said, Ron, just one of the best one-off characters. I love uh the shifters are always fun. I love the the like mystery aspect of shifters anytime they appear like. Yes, exactly. That's the word I'm looking for. So yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And it introduces Henriksen, which is a great one of our great human villains.

SPEAKER_00

So um, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I love it.

SPEAKER_00

All right. My number two, tall tales. Okay, yeah. Dude, tall tales. So I'm goofy for goofy. Yeah. I also, but this one I was talking about earlier where like Supernatural's not afraid to play with its its um form, you know. Usually with TV shows, they they want to keep it every week, it looks the same. Every week nothing changes, every week, you know, the camera moves in the same way. This episode's so unafraid to make it surreal and weird and have Sam and Dean be totally at odds with one another in funny, silly ways. And I love a um recanting a story structure. Yes. Something I always find very entertaining. Uh, the first half of um Wake Up Dead Man is that, right? It's like I'm recanting the story of how we got to this point, and the second half is unveiling the rest of the mystery. I love that. I love that idea. Uh Glass Onion does a lot of that, uh, Knives Out does a lot of that. It's the kind of mystery structure. I'm I'm very into that story structure, introduces one of my favorite running characters, but it's just it's so it's like the funniest episode of Supernatural thus far. 100%. I I I just really vibed with the energy and the feel. It's like when Dean's eating and he's like, and it's just mouth is just full of food. It's stuff like that. It's like every they took every little purple. Yeah, they took every little funny idea of like the the the big caricature version of these really well-defined characters and exploded them out into something really fun and interesting. So I've always been very partial to Tall Tales. It's a great episode. It's just a perfect. When we got here, I was so excited.

SPEAKER_03

Very excited.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, that's my number two. What is your number one favorite episode?

SPEAKER_03

Germroll, please. All Hall Breaks Loose, part one and two.

SPEAKER_00

There we go.

SPEAKER_03

I it's just I was As a Sam Girlie, this is definitely huge for me. As a Sam girly, it was huge for me. It's you know, I think Jared's acting is really phenomenal in this. It's like you said in our episode about the finale, like his the way he's acting out the like bobbling when like Sam's basically already dead. Like I I love the culmination. Like the special children are like one of my favorite things about the show, period. And after a whole season of like, I'm just so excited that I have all these characters, like everyone getting to be in the same room. Yeah. I love the setting. I think the Frontierland creepy setting is so most haunted town in America.

SPEAKER_00

Like it's just awesome.

SPEAKER_03

Like I love the creepy little demon child, the demon pretending to be a little girl who's evil with like creepy claws and like, yeah, howdy, Jake, howdy, Sam. Like just he's so ridiculous. Like I just love everything about those episodes. And again, and it's like part one. I think part one I actually do end up liking more than part two.

SPEAKER_00

I do like part one more.

SPEAKER_03

Um, just because again it's a la killbill volume one. Yeah, of course. Many such cases. Um, but part two again, it's like you get it it establishes something that seems to plague the show for the rest of its runtime, not plague, of just these Winchesters will sacrifice themselves for each other into the dirt.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

As as you know, as Bobby says, he's like, You Winchesters are just itching to throw yourself in the pit. Like itching. Like, and like you said, I think like it's like, is that how low you think of yourself? Is that how low your self-esteem is? And Dean's like, He's my brother.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's just it's just perfect.

SPEAKER_03

I think they're great.

SPEAKER_00

Uh fantastic. Okay, my number one is Night Shifter. Oh, yeah, yeah. Don't know if that's a big controversial thing. I don't think it is. Uh Night Shifter changed me as a man. Yes. Like it, you know, uh, my philosophy with TV for a long time, it's changed, obviously, now because it's a ridiculous thing to say. But I was like, every great episode of television ends with a song, you know, right? Which is not a good thing. Okay, that's pretty true, actually. But it it uh definitely helps. But that it introduced me to that song. I loved I love a bank robbery episode. I I everything about it. We already talked about a lot, but the mystery is really great. Sam and Dean's dynamic is really great. I love Ron in this episode.

SPEAKER_03

Ron's slipping on the goo is yeah, is fantastic.

SPEAKER_00

It's a very gooey, gucky episode. Good twists, good turns, introduction to a villain, introduction and just all-timer supernatural ending. Maybe the best ending to any episode of supernatural, maybe probably right. Like it's so fantastic.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, call back and the end of the show in five years.

SPEAKER_00

We'll figure it out. Uh, yeah, so that's that's mine. So those are our top five. This could change daily for me.

SPEAKER_02

That's how good this season is. Yes, agree.

Best Kill Contest

SPEAKER_00

So I I I would love to hear everyone's please tell us your top fives. That was so fun last year when a bunch of people just started doing that. I loved that. Um, anyway, shall we get on to the kill bracket? I think we should. All right. So we're gonna kind of brush through some of this. It'll get a little harder as we go on. Breck has not seen how I seeded this, and I tried to be as random as possible with the seedings. So there's no real favoring of anything. This could come down to super anticlimactic, or it could be very climactic. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

But we're gonna start this and I'll flash it on the screen so you can see all the seedings now. Hold it there for a second, and okay, we're getting into it. Starting with our first round, John's death versus gas station lady on fire. So the opening, season one, or uh episode one versus Tall Tales. I dropped my pen. What do you have on this?

SPEAKER_03

You mean Simon Zed?

SPEAKER_00

Simon said, thank you. I'm not thinking today. What do you what do you have?

SPEAKER_03

My gut is gas station lady on fire. My gut's gas station lady. So crazy.

SPEAKER_00

John's is great. It's not on screen, and the gas station one is just absolutely nuts. Yeah. Okay, so that moves on. Our next first round seed is Dean's saw decapitation versus Dean shoots yellow eyes. This is easy.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's gotta be yellow eyes.

SPEAKER_00

It's yellow eyes. Dean decapitating the thing and the blood hitting his face is awesome.

SPEAKER_03

I love that kill.

SPEAKER_00

I oh, I love that kill too.

SPEAKER_03

But it's every single time they shoot the Colt, and like it's the hammer click, the bullet shot. It's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

The look on the yellow eyed demon's face as he realizes Did I just lose?

SPEAKER_03

And you're like, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Fantastic. Okay, okay. So we're gonna brush through a lot of these. They're gonna be presumable. Okay, Crooked Cop gets shot. That's from the episode with Linda Blair. Linda Blair? Yeah, Linda Blair. Yeah, Linda Blair. Uh, versus um mover falling downstairs. That's from Playthings. Playthings, where his head gets turned around. I have a really easy one here, too. Playthings. Playthings, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

As cool as it is that the crooked cop like gets kind of got by the ghost as well. Like the ghost distracts him long enough for him to get shot.

SPEAKER_00

But it just isn't um it's creepier. It's yeah. Okay, next, the other side of the bracket. Oh, just hit my face. Other side of the bracket is gonna be Dean staking zombie into coffin or hellhound motel kill.

SPEAKER_03

This is kind of difficult for me. It's tough.

SPEAKER_00

This is this is our first, like, actually tough one because I love the like action beat of Dean like dropping and sliding.

SPEAKER_03

I love him. It's so cool. But also the Hellhound Motel Kill is our first time seeing the Hellhounds kill anybody.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and it's got that crazy like grabbing the leg, tearing the pants, and that effect is really good.

SPEAKER_03

Um just because it's truly the first time we see Hellhounds Kill Anybody. My gut says Hellhounds.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna agree with you. I think it's bigger, it's got a better special effect.

SPEAKER_03

I think it's it's got a creepier lead up. Not to say that Dean Slighting isn't still incredible.

SPEAKER_00

No, very cool. Um, okay. Next, let me find it. Next, Sam kills Invisible Clown, Gordon stabs the psychic.

SPEAKER_01

Hmm.

SPEAKER_00

This is kind of a one to me. Like I don't love either of the things.

SPEAKER_03

Because we don't know it's him. Yeah, it's we don't know it's him, and I also think that the song choice is awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I'll defer to you on this. The Sam stabbing the invisible clown has always been a little disappointing to me. We've got to make sure you keep checking this. Okay, the next round is uh He's in the Walls, which is from No Exit. Uh the opening, the cold open kill the first one uh versus Ron Gets Sniped.

SPEAKER_03

I think it's gotta be Ron.

SPEAKER_00

It's gotta be Ron. It's way more emotional. It's a big, huge, crazy filmmaking moment.

SPEAKER_03

He has the Dean's like, hi, Ron. Yeah, it's Dean liked him.

SPEAKER_00

Uh really good stuff. Okay, so now I'm gonna flash our round one advances and eliminations. We have some good stuff moving forward. Here's where it's gonna get a little harder with Dwayne's throat slit from Croatoan versus gas station. This one's easy for me. It's still gas station, right? It's still gas station. We've seen the throat slit before. It is a good twist, but it's not as crazy as that gas station one.

SPEAKER_03

It's still like it's again, it's how calm she is. Yeah. She's like, everything's gonna be okay.

SPEAKER_00

This is the next one, is also pretty easy meet for me. It's uh from Houses of Houses of the Holy, uh, pipes off the truck and pale the guy, uh, versus tiny dies.

SPEAKER_03

You go first. It's the pipes.

SPEAKER_00

It's bigger, it's cooler. I really like Tiny, but he's not, you know, he's whatever. Okay, next one is uh Yellow Eyes gets it versus Professor Swan Dive from Tall Tales.

SPEAKER_03

It's gotta be Yellow Eyes.

SPEAKER_00

It's Yellow Eyes. It is very simply Yellow Eyes.

SPEAKER_03

As cool as I like it, I also like that we see him fall and then the the janitor is like, huh?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the janitor who is the guy that just killed him. Um okay, the mover falling down the stairs versus Madison's sacrifice. This is a tougher one for me. Because this comes down to emotion versus cool kill.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I don't know how we I don't know where you're at with that.

SPEAKER_03

I would say Madison simply because I think there's more gravitas to it. And then the mover is like, it's it's it's a great death, but it's also not even a mid, it's not even a mid-episode death. It's pulled open.

SPEAKER_00

It's when his head's turned all the way around and his eyes are still kind of like That's fair. It's super gross. But I Madison. Madison We can go Madison. Okay. Madison, you move on. Thank you for your sacrifice. Oh, don't bring it up. Okay. The other side is um uh Sam, Meg possessing him, slits that hunter's throat in that footage versus the Hellhound. It's Hellhound. I think it's still the Hellhound. I I do like that kill. It's very dark, and what it does for Sam is good, but it is Hellhound is the much cooler kill. Okay, Ghost Burns versus Dean Stabs the Djinn.

SPEAKER_03

Jin.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the gin is different. You've seen a million ghost burns. Um, so we're gonna go that.

SPEAKER_03

There will be cooler ghost burns later. There'll be cooler ones, but that one was just kind of a boring.

SPEAKER_00

It's pretty standard. Okay, Sam's death versus Gordon kills the psychic. Sam's death.

SPEAKER_03

Sam's death.

SPEAKER_00

This is Sam's death, dude. Sorry, this is anticlimactic for the viewer, but um we're I don't think this is anticlimactic.

SPEAKER_03

We just know what we're talking about.

SPEAKER_00

Ron gets sniped versus industry fan meat grinder from Hollywood Babylon.

SPEAKER_03

This one's kind of hard for me.

SPEAKER_00

It is harder. Again, it's it's uh as with Madison versus the mover, it's like emotion versus cool kill. And I don't know, like Ron getting sniped is fine.

SPEAKER_03

It's not, but I think it's not Madison, you know. The industry fan meat grinder was so shocking to me when we watched it that I my gut is that if simply because it gets the chunkiest blood splatter we've seen.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, onto a and I I also love that it's like a piece of film equipment blasting blood onto another piece of film equipment. Yeah, like uh so that makes me happy. Okay, so flashing it on the screen now is our next set of seeds. Take a look at it. Very weird set of kills. Okay, back to the other side. Now it's gonna get really interesting because it is gas station, woman burning versus the pipes falling off the truck. And this is two crazy kills. However, I am very partial to one of these.

SPEAKER_03

I'm still more partial to the gas station.

SPEAKER_00

So am I. Dude, it's the stunt. You give a crazy stunt in a TV show, and I'm just incredible. It's the calmness. Like, it's all alright, everything will be fine. It's like the calmness of the death that stunt performer deserves all the props in the world. Fire stunts are crazy. Fire stunts are crazy. It has got to be gas station.

SPEAKER_03

Um we are giving these people their props, god damn it.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we are. Okay, now it is yellow eyes versus Madison. This is this is where it gets real difficult, right?

SPEAKER_03

It is okay. I'm gonna go into the pros of both. Madison, Madison is besides Sam and besides John, I think the most emotional death of this season.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And I love the beauty of her being like, This is how you save me. Is we're going to like this is the only thing we can do. However, yellow eyes is the death we've been sitting on and waiting for and waiting for and waiting for.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I feel like I just answered my own question.

SPEAKER_00

So yellow eyes? Yeah. The cult is a powerful thing. I love the Madison death. It's not on screen. I think yellow eyes just gets a bit of an advantage for that as well. Yeah. Um, and the payoff of the yellow eyes one too, where they like lean over his body and it's like, this is for our mom, you son of a bitch. Awesome. Okay, the next side. Uh, Hellhound versus the gin. This is an easy one. It's the Hellhound. The Hellhound is a legitimate, like the glass bursting, and it's a great stunt. Um in a mostly underrated episode, I think. Crossroad blues is quite good.

SPEAKER_03

It's deeply underrated, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Sam's death versus meat grinder. Once again, emotion versus cool kill. For me, it's gotta be Sam. Sam's death is one of those things that's like burned into my brain. The meat grinder, there are other cooler versions of that in later seasons. Um, okay. We are into our final four. This is this one's crazy. Um I'm flashing on the screen so you can see. That's our final four. Okay. Gas station burning versus yellow eyes. So is this best kill or is it best storytelling? That I think that's the debate here.

SPEAKER_03

That now that we've gotten down to this final, this fab four here, we're gonna have to get a little nitpicky.

SPEAKER_00

It's hard.

SPEAKER_03

Because is it awesome when yellow eyes dies? Yeah. Yes, absolutely. Is it also, and I don't mean just, it's also just him being shot with the cold and then dying.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And again, that gas station kill fucking ribs.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think here's here's my thing. One of these we rewound and watched twice. Yes because we were like, wait a minute. Yeah. Especially because the last time we did one of these burns, it was like most it was Wendago, mostly CGI, and then this one just really committed to being like practical.

SPEAKER_03

It was it, we cannot stress enough. We literally had to read, we were like, what the hell? Did they just do that?

SPEAKER_00

It's such a dark like from a storytelling standpoint, it's so dark too. Like so dark. Are we eliminating yellow eyes for the random lady dying at the gas station? I think we are. We're doing it.

SPEAKER_03

We're doing it.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, yeah, gas station.

SPEAKER_03

Hey, we are dedicated to this is on the ground. This is yeah, journalism.

SPEAKER_00

Important journalism we're doing. Okay, Hellhound versus Sam's death. I I have an answer for this one, isn't it for me?

SPEAKER_03

I think it'll have to be Sam's death, but I'm sad to see Hellhound go.

SPEAKER_00

I am sad to see Hellhound go, but I think Sam's death is just again one of the things burned into my brain. The emotion of it. The way Jared plays it.

SPEAKER_03

He's like holding his shoulder, he's like, Dean!

SPEAKER_00

But the way Jared plays it afterwards, he's just like, like he's so clearly alive, but he is not there. And he's just bobbling, and Dean's literally holding him up and he's checking him out.

SPEAKER_03

It's not even that bad. It's not even that bad. You're okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and and then he just dies in his arms. Like it's in the the the kill itself is also very violent.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, we can't deny that like the No, it's a full dis it's like and like you mentioned, like Jake like fully like turns a knife in his back.

SPEAKER_00

It is really good. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so flash, flash, flash.

SPEAKER_00

Flash, here it is. Our final two gas station kill versus Sam's death. The the entirety of this bracket has been cool death versus emotional death for us. Like so, this is a very interesting one.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, let's go over it one more time. We've already talked both of these to death.

SPEAKER_00

Let's go back to the beginning.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so the first kill was uh So when the Reaper appears in a.

SPEAKER_00

When I was in seventh grade and I saw this for the first time, uh so I genuinely and talking to me who loves stunts. I love stunt filmmaking. We love stunts. So I'm like looking at them this like the gas station one is really burned in my brain, but the Sam one is like eternally burned into my brain. Does Sam coming back to life the next episode do anything to negate it? I don't think it should.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think it should discuss this.

SPEAKER_00

I don't I we discussed it as it's eligible, but for you personally, does that negate the emotion of it at all? Because I don't think it does.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know that it necessarily does, but you know, when I'm rewatching it, I'm like, this works for me. Like I'm enjoying it, but I'm never like The Sam Death?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like on a rewatch, it is it's a little more like I'm like, oh, I just think he's gonna come back to the next episode. Yes, but he's the main character of the show.

SPEAKER_00

Does that not still break your heart that he's like of course it still breaks my heart?

SPEAKER_03

Of course it still breaks my heart.

SPEAKER_00

But again, it comes into the question is this is this like storytelling or is it literally best kill in a monster show?

SPEAKER_03

If it's storytelling, it's Sam. If it's best kill in a monster show, it's the gas station.

SPEAKER_00

Can you live with us dubbing the gas station kill is the best kill of the season?

SPEAKER_03

I could.

SPEAKER_00

I'll I'll give it to you.

SPEAKER_03

I genuinely could.

SPEAKER_00

I love a fire stunt, the best kill of the season.

SPEAKER_03

Because you know, we let Mary win last season.

SPEAKER_00

Also includes fire. What does it all mean?

SPEAKER_03

Every season we're like random fire death number one.

SPEAKER_00

There's that one guy where he like burned his thumb on a fire, and I think that he made it he died at some point, and I think that was the cause.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Precise that is gonna be how we treat this.

SPEAKER_03

I think it's honestly kind of kick-ass that we picked a random death.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, I do too. That that feels very monster of the week to me.

SPEAKER_03

That's the point of this bracket.

SPEAKER_00

Um if you'd completely disagree, please comment and tell us that.

SPEAKER_03

I would love to be told how I'm wrong.

SPEAKER_00

Um okay. Well, that's been season two of retrospective, man.

SPEAKER_03

We did it. Talked about the season.

SPEAKER_00

If there's anything we missed, ask us questions in the comments. We will do, you know, we'll we'll try to be on top of answering that stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Tell us what episode you're most excited for in season six.

BAOTD moving forward

SPEAKER_00

Yes, please tell us that. Um we will we aren't sure what our like because we're gonna take a month off. Um uh maybe as our usual. It might be like slightly longer than a month. I think with how this ends, there's like one extra Monday in March, I believe is we're we're recording this. I believe it may be like a little longer than a month, but we were still gonna do two special episodes. We're not sure what they will be.

SPEAKER_03

So if there's anything you want to see us cover, a movie from one of these actors or uh trivia of something like us two trivia questions or using we floated the idea of bringing movies to the table and discussing if Sam and Dean would survive in that movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like if we we take monster franchises and be would Sam and Dean Winchester survive this?

SPEAKER_03

Would Sam and Dean Winchester have a standing chance against Michael Myers?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like what do we want to see? So uh that could be a really fun episode. I know those are pretty popular on TikTok, so we could try to find some really weird movies. Like the Descent, would they survive the descent?

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

Um, wouldn't that be awesome?

SPEAKER_03

Hold on, we need to go watch the descent. I need to think about this.

SPEAKER_00

Have you seen the descent? Yeah. Okay, of course, yeah. Anyway, so uh tell us if there are any of any special movies you want to watch. Like we've talked about maybe doing a Jeffrey Dean Morgan movie since he's officially gone this season. Uh maybe that movie Possession, he's in, which is a fine movie. We have a Blu-ray copy of it.

SPEAKER_03

Um, this is around the time 2007 is when uh Jensen's My Bloody Valentine came out. Yeah, that's what that would be a good one to do.

SPEAKER_00

Um we'll we'll come up with some stuff. If you have any ideas in the meantime, let us know. We're very excited to keep doing this. We're very excited for season three. Um and the break is just so we don't get burned out and these can stay high quality for you guys, or it's very important to us that this is always fun and good. We don't just want to make slop for everyone.

SPEAKER_03

We're not churning these out too.

SPEAKER_00

No, yeah. So, anyway, this has been awesome. This has been a great season.

SPEAKER_03

Uh good work.

SPEAKER_00

Good bring it there, but try to reach under the good work, brother. Okay, anyway, so this has been season two of Supernatural. This has been a season two retrospective, this has been season two of Be Afraid of the Dark. Well, so thank you all for watching. Keep watching, tell your friends we want to keep doing this, and we want it to grow and be a cool, really awesome community of people. Everyone in the comments has always been so nice, and it's been fun to interact with everybody.

SPEAKER_03

It's been really great. I love talking about supernatural.

SPEAKER_00

Love talking about supernatural stories.

SPEAKER_03

It's ruining me for every other topic I have to talk about.

SPEAKER_00

It is true that it is doing that to us. Um, anyway, between now and when season three starts, you know what you have to do. You gotta get your journal, you gotta hit the road, you gotta watch some TV, but remember, you know what's out there. Be afraid of the dark.
