SPEAKER_01

Hello and welcome back to the show. As always, I'm your driver Spencer. Sitting Shotgun is Breck, and this week with a podcast asking the important questions. Like, are ghost pirate ships the coolest thing in the world? Is Bella all that? And has Gordon gone too far? This is Be Afraid of the Dark.

SPEAKER_00

I hope we find out the answer.

SPEAKER_01

All pressing questions, all gonna be answered right now. I hope so. Uh jumping

"Red Sky at Morning" Intro

SPEAKER_01

straight into it. Season three, episode six, Red Sky at Morning, written by Lawrence Adries. Uh uh Andres, I don't know how to say things, directed by Cliff Bull. I think these are both first timers. I haven't heard their names before. Yeah, new writer and a new director to the show. They do a good job. It's a pretty cool episode.

SPEAKER_00

It's a fun episode. I like it. It's an episode I remember.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I didn't remember this at all.

SPEAKER_00

We were like, whoa, the ghost pirate rolls up, and you were like, whoa. I was like, damn, you didn't remember this. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because it's a ghost pirate ship. That's so cool.

SPEAKER_00

You said it, you said the title last night while we were watching, and I was like, oh, Bella and the pirate stuff. I'm excited.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay. So this episode starts uh by the pier with a woman jogging at night, the scariest thing a woman can do.

SPEAKER_00

Literally, what is she doing?

SPEAKER_01

I know it's I know it's what are you doing? There's no excuse. I don't know what to say. Uh she rolls to a stop, takes a drink of water, and looks up, and there's kind of like a thundercrack in the sky, and she looks out over the pier or the docks or whatever you call this, and the marina. The marina, and there's fog in the distance, and as the lightning goes, a ghost pirate ship flashes in and out of view. She looks at it, she thinks it's weird, she moves on with her day because she doesn't see it anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Kind of hysterical to be like, well, that happened. Then she's gonna go home and take a show.

SPEAKER_01

And she does tell someone later, but she is at home in the shower, the scariest place for a woman to be, and uh behind her there's some motion through the like fogged up glass of the shower. There is a figure there, and she turns and he's gone, and she like pokes her head out.

SPEAKER_00

He like puts his hand on the glass it down.

SPEAKER_01

Waters what in from it be for real.

SPEAKER_00

Woo! Um anyway only for you who listen.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. The technically I I think we still could put it on TikTok. Anyway, it doesn't matter. For those of you who listen to the full episode, you get the real experience.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, the live and uncut.

SPEAKER_01

So anyway, uh ghost water is is uh emitting through the glass into the shower.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome back to ghost water.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to ghost water a staple on supernatural. So that happens, she's spooked, she's freaked out, and then out of nowhere a ghost just like puts her in a chokehold and slams her around the shower.

SPEAKER_00

That's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

And she dies. It's pretty spooky. It's a pretty good one.

SPEAKER_00

It is my nightmare to be killed in the shower because I don't want to be found naked and wet.

SPEAKER_01

That's fair. So you're what what's her name from Psycho?

SPEAKER_00

Um Marion Crane.

SPEAKER_01

No, the cat actor.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, Janet Lee.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, thank you. You know Janet Lee never took a shower again? I did know. She always took baths.

SPEAKER_00

And how could you not?

SPEAKER_01

Which here's the funny thing. Still just as vulnerable in a bath. Yeah. You can just see slightly better.

SPEAKER_00

Like I mean, you know, it's true.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, so then we cut, and Sam and Dean are driving. That's been a staple of this episode, just to cut into them on the road at night specifically. Must be easy to shoot. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

It's probably they've been doing that a lot this season, and as we know, this season was hindered quite a bit by the writer strike. So I'm sure it was just an easier way than trying to like we notice this later is this episode and the next, they squat, they don't stay in motels, and I'm sure there was like it was easier for them to retrofit some set they had instead of building an entirely new motel because they're like, guys, we're a little we're getting a little close on costs this uh this season.

SPEAKER_01

So why don't we just I want to look up the history of that more and we'll do that before the retrospective.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we can talk about that in the retrospect.

SPEAKER_01

Because it is, it it has affected it in interesting ways while the writing has maintained a pretty high level of quality, at least a pretty high level of clarity.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

It is and and maybe that comes down to these two guys just knowing these characters so well.

SPEAKER_00

We've only had one episode where I think you and I were like, okay.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and and it was a filler one, it was like fine. Anyway, uh they're arguing, and Dean uh essentially is like, you want to tell me something?

SPEAKER_00

Happy Purim.

SPEAKER_01

Happy. Well, it's not your birthday.

SPEAKER_00

Shout out to my Jewish friend. Do they do birthday episodes in the show? No.

SPEAKER_01

No, that's so weird. You should have done birthday episodes.

SPEAKER_00

They should have done birthday episodes.

SPEAKER_01

There's a Christmas episode somewhere.

SPEAKER_00

It's this season. I'm so excited for it. I've been excited for it all. It's one of my favorite episodes of the whole show.

SPEAKER_01

Um, so anyway, uh weird thing there. I don't I don't quite know, but um they uh essentially Dean goes, There's a bullet missing from the cult. So and or I'll read part of the line that made me laugh. So he's like, essentially, unless you're shooting at incredibly evil cans, he's like, I didn't do it. So unless you were out target shooting and shooting these horrible evil cans, then I don't know what's going on. So I found that really funny, and Dean figures it out really quick. He's like, You went after it, the crossroads demon, and he gets really mad at him because Sam killed it, and Sam's excuse was she was being a smartass.

SPEAKER_00

No, and you shot her, she was a smart ass.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and he's like, you know where the best place to get information was? The crossroads demon. And Dean's right, and Sam was also right, because there's no other information you were gonna get from the show.

SPEAKER_00

She wasn't gonna give them a single other thing.

SPEAKER_01

And it's not like there's one crossroads demon. And we definitely learn that later, but anyway.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's not like the demons only have one person that does every single deal that people make.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and that's that's kind of what I think the lore is at the moment. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm like, you're telling me they understaff hell?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Hell, hey, the with the economy being what it is now, they would understaff hell.

SPEAKER_00

That's true.

SPEAKER_01

Hell is like a hellish place to work. Hey, oh that was a horrible joke. I uh okay. So they finish this argument and they get to wherever. Does it say where they are? I can't remember.

SPEAKER_00

And I don't I didn't clock a location tag.

SPEAKER_01

Vancouver. They're not in Vancouver, but they're filming in Vancouver.

SPEAKER_00

In beautiful Vancouver.

SPEAKER_01

In Vancouver, eh? So they get there and they're talking to this old uh lady Gertie. Is that her name?

SPEAKER_00

Um Gertrude, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Gertrude, yeah. So they're talking to Gertie, and she's older, and she's kind of explaining that her niece is the woman from the cold open.

SPEAKER_00

She found her niece dead.

SPEAKER_01

And and you know, she thought the investigation was over, and then she's like, Wait, you're working with Alex, aren't you? And Dean always being quick on his feet, like, yeah, us and Alex were like that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um She's like, Alex told me that the case was solved, and they're like, Yeah, no.

SPEAKER_01

No. So then they they they find out from her that uh this woman, her niece, saw a ship, and she's like, Maybe it's a ghost ship. And Sam's like, Maybe visibly taken aback, like, oh yeah, and then my favorite shit in the world is that she's like, let me know if there's anything else I can do. And then she like really weirdly rubs Sam's.

SPEAKER_00

It's so weird. This lady flirts with him the entire episode. Entire episode.

SPEAKER_01

It's and Sam's saying they're like And frankly, Sam, go for it. Why not? You've had a dry spell.

SPEAKER_00

And that's what I'm saying is, and I said aloud, she's already old. Yeah, she's dying soon, anyways. He has evil cursed penis. Why not just get in there?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, just let it have let has some fun. You'll have some fun, she'll clearly have some fun. Anyway, so then they hard cut, and I want to I want to go over this for just a second. Yes. They hard cut to them walking on the pier, and Dean goes, and I quote, What a crazy broad. But then immediately they go from that. So let's let's lay out the events. If you look at the big board, no, but if you lay out the events, it is them talking to her, hard cut to them on the pier going, what a crazy broad. They have just figured out about the ghost ship, and Sam, in between those two periods, has done a ton of research. Yes. He knows how many ships they were, yes, how many of that style. He knows the uh the lore where like every 37 years.

SPEAKER_00

Every 37 years people see ghost ships and people die.

SPEAKER_01

Die uh drowning, die uh drowning on land where there's essentially no water. Yeah, so he explains it to him. When did he have time to do that research?

SPEAKER_00

I like to think they broke for lunch.

SPEAKER_01

When did you have time to do that research? Show me. Support your local library and show me the research supernatural.

SPEAKER_00

That's what we want. That's our merch idea. Come on, we can't make our merch idea obsolete.

SPEAKER_01

Legitimately, if you want a shirt that says support your local library with like the a library in the Impala parked at front, let us know and we will have those made. I want that shirt so bad.

SPEAKER_00

I want one really bad.

SPEAKER_01

But if you will buy one, tell us and we will we will make them and sell them.

SPEAKER_00

Shit, we'll sign one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I well. We'll talk about the logistics of that. We'll uh we'll maybe sign one. Anyway, um, so that happens at Death One. I just think it's funny. When did they have time to do that research? And then we get to something genuinely hysterical as they roll up, they walk up some steps, and Dean's like, Isn't this where we parked the car?

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

So where's the car? Yeah, he and then he he like turns, he's like, somebody stole my car, and he walks over, and then he keels over and he's like having a full-on panic. He's having a full-on panic. And to its credit, Sam turns around, he's like, Hey, oh, calm, calm down, Dean. It's gonna be okay.

SPEAKER_00

It's so funny. It's so funny. And if you've ever had your tar code, you know that your tar code.

SPEAKER_01

If you ever had your tar code, you know how really stressful that can be.

SPEAKER_00

Your car towed, yeah. You understand because you know, one time I had my car towed from my own apartment building. Yeah. So there's that.

SPEAKER_01

Good work. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh then out of Somebody stole my car. It's the way he puts the emphasis on it, too.

SPEAKER_01

It's and then uh out of nowhere rolls up Bella.

SPEAKER_00

Hey Diva.

SPEAKER_01

Which by the way, hate how you spell your name. Two L's, please.

SPEAKER_00

Who knows? I don't know why. I think it's Bella like Bella Legosi.

SPEAKER_01

Two L's, please.

SPEAKER_00

Bella Legosi spells it with one L.

SPEAKER_01

But now I have it written different in my journal because I didn't realize.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so now you're mad.

SPEAKER_01

Now I'm mad about it. I can't change it. I write it.

SPEAKER_00

Did you notice in her last episode that it was one L?

SPEAKER_01

I'm sure I did, but it's been a little bit since we watched it, so I forget. Anyway, she rolls up, explains that, oh, it was in a no-parking zone, and he was like, Yes, it was. It's fine. And she goes, Well, it wasn't when I was done with it.

SPEAKER_02

So fucking funny.

SPEAKER_01

And then she kind of explains a little bit more, like, she's there because she does a lot of like readings and seances for older women and charm work all over the like this the coast.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I think they said they say in the next episode that they're in Massachusetts this episode.

SPEAKER_01

Makes sense.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. We got there. It's Vancouver.

SPEAKER_01

We did it. Um so she explains that was that's what she's doing, and she's mad at them for telling Gertie that the the case wasn't closed because now she's withholding payment.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Which is Bell, all Bella cares about is payment. Payment and staying alive.

SPEAKER_00

It's hard to be a diva.

SPEAKER_01

She essentially is like, you know, it's this ship and she also knows what's going on. And then she starts to walk away and she they they play the whole do you even have a soul, whatever thing? As she's walking away, she goes, Oh, she's like, Bet better get that car before somebody finds the arsenal in the trunk.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then she leaves and Dean.

SPEAKER_00

Wait. Dean goes, How do you sleep at night? And she goes, Oh, yes. On silk sheets, rolling naked and money.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she's so chic and cool.

SPEAKER_00

I love her. Lauren Cohen, we love you. Come on the podcast.

SPEAKER_01

I would I'd love to. Do you imagine if we had Lauren Cohen on the podcast being as big of Walking Dead fans as we are and not talking about it?

SPEAKER_00

And then we're just like, anyways, can we talk to you about Supernatural?

SPEAKER_01

We talked to you about your like five or six episode stint on Supernatural. Anyway, uh Dean then goes, Can I shoot her in Sam Bosses? And goes, not in public. Not in public. Dog, so funny. These two are so done with her in a way that I love.

SPEAKER_00

They've had one episode with her, and they're like, God damn. I'm like, hey, Diva. Yeah. I missed you.

SPEAKER_01

Um then we cut to our mid-episode kill. Or I guess first two-thirds kill. I don't know. The structure of this one.

SPEAKER_00

We have a couple in this one.

SPEAKER_01

The structure's different in this one. There's more kills than there normally are. Or more kill and like attacks than there normally are. Yeah. So a guy's in his ho um in his bathroom.

SPEAKER_00

Deeply 2000s bathroom.

SPEAKER_01

Deeply 2000s bathroom. The he looks over and the bathtub is filling up with weird-looking water. So he goes over and he tries to undrain it and it won't drain, and he's just looking at it, and then out of nowhere, a hand shoots out, grabs him by the throat, and his eyes like CGI bulge and roll back. Pretty good kill. I like this kill.

SPEAKER_00

It was really also funny to me that you go, wow, that drain's like awesome. It's on the side of the bathtub.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you're gonna have to reach in if you're like if you're having a moment and you get out of the bathtub and you're like, well, crap. Really funny. Get your hand all wet again. It's really funny. Don't act like you don't want that.

SPEAKER_00

No, it just amuses me because Spencer will notice the randomest things about this show, and I'm like, I like stories. Spencer will be like, that's not the same gun in the bubble because you can tell that I'm like, well, whatever you say, dear. Sounds great to me. That's why you're in charge of this.

SPEAKER_01

I'm not in charge of this.

SPEAKER_00

And then I'm like, and so this episode is actually named after a Led Zeppelin song from 1974. That is true.

SPEAKER_01

But that's that's the vibe we bring to the function. I notice details no one cares about, and Breck knows everything about music from all eras. Pretty much. Um, okay, so that's a pretty cool little thing. We cut to then morning after, and the guy's brother, or whoever brother, right?

SPEAKER_00

It's his brother.

SPEAKER_01

The guy's brother's talking to Bella, who's um uh playing a reporter in Salmandine roles.

SPEAKER_00

Using an American accent.

SPEAKER_01

Using an American accent, and not the one she uses in The Walking Dead. So she's talking to him, they walk up and they're like, uh, you're done talking to him, mate. I'm gonna wife remember. Like the cop handler, and send her on her way, and she's mad, and and they get some information out of the guy, and essentially it's more information on the ship. And uh they they're like a lot of and a lot of info for uh secondhand story, and he's like, I saw we were deep sea diving, I saw it too. You're like, oh. So and they don't know why these victims are being chosen yet. That's part of the mystery of the episode. So then uh they look over and Bella is routing on them to the cops.

SPEAKER_00

Those two men.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they tail the hightail it out, they're truly good.

SPEAKER_00

Um She follows them.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she follows them?

SPEAKER_00

She like follows them to their car to chit-chat.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, yeah. So she chit-chats, and I'll let you kind of explain this this little segment here.

SPEAKER_00

So Spencer's confused by why I think that this is kind of an interesting, not confused. So basically they're like trading barbs because they're obviously very mad at each other. Um, and Bella essentially gets off this line of because like what does she say? She goes, Don't look down your nose at me. Which I think is not unfair of her to say, because they are very like you suck Bella. And I'm like, first of all, never trash a diva in my presence. Well, yeah, but and second of all, I get it, like she but she calls she says specifically, you're a stone's throwaway from being a stereo a serial killer. Which I think is interesting because this is something they've discussed before of and a theme they've kind of touched on before. And it specifically reminded me of um Gordon's introduction episode when they when at the end Dean has that really heartbreaking line of like how like I wish we had never taken this job at screwdriver, how many things did we kill that we didn't have to? Like so it I don't know, I think it's an interesting thing to brush up against because they're not like serial killers in the traditional sense of like they're not running around committing sexually like like crimes against people at all. Like it's just not like that. But I think two other two like you know, the vampires are always like we they know the hunters by name because the hunters like like Yeah. So I don't know. I think it's an interesting thing of you know, to other people that aren't hunters, are they serial killers because they're the ones being hunted.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so this is an interesting thing. We're getting into do we classify the Punisher as a serial killer territory?

SPEAKER_00

It's weedy. Like I'm not saying it's not weedy.

SPEAKER_01

Because I would argue they're not serial killers, they're vigilantes, because that would be the front castle classification, is that he he isn't serial killing innocent people in a in a uh ritualistic way, because that's to me what makes a serial killer.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, a serial killer is three or more people you've killed, and usually a sexual or ritualistic motivation.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and they're not doing I mean it is ritualistic in that it is actual magic.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But I I would just argue that that is painting them in a worse light than because she is more in the wrong than they are. She is selling evil things to evil people for large amounts of money and doesn't care who gets hurt.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_01

And they're going around trying to save people for free.

SPEAKER_00

Correct.

SPEAKER_01

So I do agree that like they can't judge her that much.

SPEAKER_00

They can judge her a little.

SPEAKER_01

They can judge her a little. And I just I I thought that was a little too harsh.

SPEAKER_00

It was a little too harsh. She's being a little rude about it.

SPEAKER_01

And that's the point.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And I do think later, once we get into like they stop trying to exercise people and they just go straight for a kill, it gets a little like Do you remember when we used to save these people?

SPEAKER_01

That becomes a whole thing, right? Now that they they that now that the knife's out there, now that the cult's out there, um there I there's a very specific scene I remember of Sam and Dean, and I think season four uh talking about that. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So it's just, you know, we like to litigate on this podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Anyway, that's just a difference of opinion. What do you think? Are they closer to serial killers or not? And let us know in the comments.

SPEAKER_00

I really don't. I just thought it was an interesting thing to to discuss.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, to discuss. Okay. So um um they ex or well, no, now Sam and Dean, and by the way, sorry, while this is happening, there's this great shot from the trunk while Sam and Dean are loading their shotguns. And she walks up behind them and you're like And Dean's like, you really want to be standing that close to me when I have a shotgun. Uh load a gun? Yeah, in my hand. Anyway, so that happens. She leaves.

SPEAKER_02

He's got another thing loaded, if you know what I mean. He does.

SPEAKER_01

These two need to bone. Um, we'll get to it. They want that. So they're they are sitting in their impala outside the guy, the other guy who's seen the ghost ship's house and having a little conversation, and then the guy comes bursting out. They get out of the car, they're like, We are cops, we're undercover. He's like, No, you're not, stay away from me.

SPEAKER_00

It's so and he calls their car weird, and Dean's like, we don't have to go that far.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's like, Oh, oh, oh. Sam doesn't let him get too far. Uh, he scurries back to his car, gets in it, tries to drive her out of his driveway, and the car just shuts off. And he's confused, and um, their stop at the gate, Sam and Dean do, and Sam's like, get salt guns, and he rushes in to try to help him. Dean rushes back to the Impala, and the guy looks in his rearview mirror, and boom, ghost behind him. He looks to the front, and the the seat is wet because it pans back and he's not there, and then it pans back over and he's in the driver's or the passenger's. Don't disrespect Aragorn. I'm not disrespecting Amazon. Take it back.

SPEAKER_00

No, it's just it's the it's the stringy. It's the hair. No. Wow. I didn't know. Wow. This is a sore subject for me. Thanks for bringing that up. You're welcome. Well, we're getting you the sword, it's fine.

SPEAKER_01

Um, we are getting you the sword. Uh anyway, so then uh uh the ghost who has a stump for his right hand, he his hand has been cut off and it's a bloody stump.

SPEAKER_00

Pirate shit.

SPEAKER_01

Uh touches the man and he just starts spitting up water. Great kill.

SPEAKER_00

It's very cool.

SPEAKER_01

So then the guy he dies. Sam can't get in the car, uh, Dean blasts out the window and the ghost is gone.

SPEAKER_00

Because again, I can't stress you enough. One of my other really weird specific fears is that I'm going to drown in like a very stupid amount of water that people are like, damn, that's like stupid as fuck.

SPEAKER_01

That'd be awesome though. Yeah. People tell stories about you forever.

SPEAKER_00

Not good ones, but no, but I don't want to be the guy who's like the ghost touches me with a stump, and then it's like, and then I barf water until I die.

SPEAKER_01

For real.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, uh also important to say that Bella says she's trying to stop it altogether, and they're just trying to stop, like, save the guy, and she was right that they couldn't save him. Anyway, so they're driving away, and Dean essentially has this kind of heart to heart where he's he's like, You want to say it or do I want to? You can't save everybody.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And Sam's like, Cool, does that make you feel better? He's like, nope.

SPEAKER_00

Sam has a really sad line here, and he goes, Lately, I feel like I can't save anybody. You're like, Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So then they're into where they're staying, and Bella shows up.

SPEAKER_00

Squatting again.

SPEAKER_01

Squatting again. Well, no, or actually, this is the first time they're squatting. Yeah. So yeah, this is the first time they're squatting, and uh my one question all the research y'all have to do.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Where's your Wi-Fi?

SPEAKER_00

Damn, I never thought about that.

SPEAKER_01

Like, where's your Wi-Fi?

SPEAKER_00

They do have like hella books out.

SPEAKER_01

They do have hella books out. That is true, but where's your Wi-Fi?

SPEAKER_00

Where's your Wi-Fi? Anyway, what's the hotspot situation?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, yeah. Not in the early 2000s.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, not in like 2007, 2008. I don't know what part of the they they'll acknowledge the year change within seasons, which I think is interesting. Because in season two, once we get to the hitchhiker episode, they call it 2007, and it should just be 2006.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so I I do wonder what year we're at.

SPEAKER_01

Who knows? Anyway, so what happens next is uh Bella shows up, she comes in, they continue to argue, and she's like weird people in this door. Yeah, she's like, uh, they explain that the ghost, or she talks about the ghost and how it didn't have a hand. She's like, I know who it is, and she shows them a photo.

SPEAKER_00

Espero Santos. She tells them the name of the boat, too.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so she knows about the boat, she knows all the lore. It's this this sailor who was um uh hanged for whatever piracy or something.

SPEAKER_00

Sub something.

SPEAKER_01

And they chopped off his hand. And so she says they made a hand of glory, and Dean instantly makes a gross masturbation joke.

SPEAKER_00

Um He makes a happy ending joke, no less. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So he has kind of a put-out look, and then they they say it's it's real, like cult occult work.

SPEAKER_00

The right hand of a hanged man is a serious occult object, is what Sam says. So good to know. I want to I should start making a running list of all the things that Sam says are serious occult objects and just see what we can hunt down.

unknown

True.

SPEAKER_01

Uh so then then there she knows where it is and she has a plan to get in to steal it. Uh hard cut to her in this really kick-ass dress. She's so pretty. And she she goes, Would you hurry up? Sam's already halfway there with his date. Ooh. And then Dean's like, I look so freaking stupid. And he walks down the stairs, and once again, they shoot him. We shoot Jensen like he's a pretty girl. It's like the in the it it's a which I like this, it's a reversal of the scene in any like spy movie where the woman walks down with a big slit open dress and all the men shut up and look, and it's reversed. She shuts up and looks at Jensen walk down in this tux looking fine as hell.

SPEAKER_00

Looking good as hell. I hadn't thought about that too. Like it's they literally shoot it like when it's like they like the guy picks up the nerdy girl for prom in a rom-com and she comes down and she's like, and she took her glasses off and she's beautiful. But it's just Dean like in a monkey suit.

SPEAKER_01

Like and and then there's this great moment where she's just staring at him, he's like, I look stupid. She's like, not the word I would use. And he goes, he kind of like is proud of himself a little bit, and then she goes, You know, when this is over, we should have we we should really have angry sex.

SPEAKER_00

Um she wants that cookie so fucked up.

SPEAKER_01

And she's just looking at Dean, and Dean just kind of gets put out for a second, and he goes, Don't objectify me. And as he's walking away, you talk about this.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it was funny because I had never noticed this before, but when he walks away and he's not facing Bella, but we can see him on the camera, he's kind of like, Oh.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Like Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

His type is so dangerous, brunettes, it's not even funny.

SPEAKER_01

So they get there, and we'll kind of brush through a lot of this. This is a lot of back and forth, but the important things to talk about are Dean is a child, he gets there chewing gum and he like takes it out and puts it on a fountain.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. And she's like, Can you try to act like you've lived this life before?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Nice British accent, I guess. It's not that great. It's pretty good. It wasn't bad. So then they get in and Sam walks in with Gertie as his date.

SPEAKER_00

So good. And throughout this whole sequence, bless his heart, pimping him out to this old lady.

SPEAKER_01

They are. So throughout this whole sequence, we'll just talk about this. Gertie is getting drunk and Sam is dancing with her. That's it. That's all Sam does at this party. He didn't even need to be there.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_01

So funny.

SPEAKER_00

It's so they're like, well, we needed Gertie to invite us to this thing. And so Sam has to entertain her and just kind of put up with being groped by this old lady.

SPEAKER_04

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

She's like, You remind me of my late husband. He was shy too. And then cops a full feel of his ass. And you're like, can we get him out of there?

SPEAKER_01

It's crazy. So while that's happening, um, there's they realize there's a bunch of security around. Uh Bella fakes fainting, so Dean can carry her upstairs and put her in a bedroom so she can they they essentially get past security.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they're at a museum. I forgot to mention they're at like the second. Like a gala at a museum. Yeah. You know how rich people do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, so while that's happening, uh Dean kind of she waits in the room and Dean sneaks out to go find it, and they hard cut to a hand of a gross mummified hand.

SPEAKER_00

Gross as fuck.

SPEAKER_01

The fingers are all broken. Thanks for just doing that, guys.

SPEAKER_00

I really I actually really I do appreciate it. Thanks for having me. No, I do appreciate it.

SPEAKER_01

I appreciate showing you gross. It's the hard cut to a close-up of it where I was like, wow, I wasn't ready.

SPEAKER_00

Also, this might be a stupid question. How do they like mummify it so that it's like I know you can mummify things, but like how do they mummify just a hand so that you still see the flesh on it?

SPEAKER_01

It's drying it out, I'm sure. Drying it out and putting it in salt and stuff to like they jerkify it? I mean, but yeah, legitimately, yes, that's what they do.

SPEAKER_00

So mop it up.

SPEAKER_01

Ghosts, mop it up.

SPEAKER_00

Back to my hunch.

SPEAKER_01

So then while Dean is out trying to get that Bella, the security guard knocks on the door and she stops and she has her dress kind of pulled down. She's like, Can we just have a few more minutes? And he's like, sure. And then when he closes, she like laughs and goes, Tickles, don't they?

SPEAKER_00

She's such a good actress. I love watching con artists have to act.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so while she's in that room alone room alone, Dean bumps into the security guy, and he's like, She's being taken care of by someone. He's confused, and he walks in and he has the hand, and she says, Can I see it? And he goes, Nope. And he wraps it in his little like handkerchief, puts it in his pocket, they go downstairs.

SPEAKER_00

And we miss before when you know the security was moving out, she's like holding this little like chip in a bottle, like she's staring at some. They're in like some random room in this mistake. You know how museums do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, how museums are. So then they go downstairs, they meet up with Sam and save him, and uh sh Oh, I forgot to mention.

SPEAKER_00

I like that Dean's really good with wires. He cuts the alarm on the thing. Like, I just think that's a fun detail. He's a mechanic. Like, I love it. I like when they show it not just applying to the Impala, and he can actually do things like that.

SPEAKER_01

So they do that, and they uh uh Bella's like, I'm gonna get Gertie home in a cold shower. Takes her away. Sam uh Dean kind of checks his pocket, sees that it's something is still in there, and then he looks at Sam and goes, You stink of sex. So Gertie was like, He wants me. He wants me. It's fantastic. So Sam's saying that, like, please, God, let me die. They get to the Impala, and while the uh the other important thing is that Gertie told him is she gave a hint of what the mystery is with the target. Yes, she said that her niece They've all had some tragedy, yes, and someone else has died in the tragedy.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, so she tells Sam that the two brothers that died, it was rumored that they killed their dad. Because they mentioned earlier that they had inherited $120 million, which was eye raising, which eyebrow raising then, let alone I don't even want to think about what inflation did to that some. Um and so there's like always been a rumor around town that those two brothers killed their dad, and then her niece um was driving a car in a car accident and it flipped, and she was injured, but her her cousin was killed. So these are both people, these are all people who have either, you know, on purpose or accidentally killed a family member.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. So uh they get in the impala, Dean checks his pocket, pulls it out, and he's like, This isn't it, and he unfolds it, and it's the bottle she was playing with. And we hard cut to hard cut to Bella by the pier, just flipping through a building. Slipping through fat stacks. She's literally already sold the thing.

SPEAKER_00

God she's awesome. God she's cool.

SPEAKER_01

So uh, and then she looks up and goes, Oh my god. And she gets out of the car and she looks out and she sees the ghost pirate ship, the death omen, off on the pier. She's going to die.

SPEAKER_00

Rest in peace, Diva.

SPEAKER_01

So she immediately runs back to Sam and Dean.

SPEAKER_00

Um, hey, hey guys, it's me again.

SPEAKER_01

So she explains she's seen it, and then both of them kind of get quiet, and Dean's like, I didn't think my opinion of you could get any lower. They explain that they know what happened. The ghost is targeting people who have killed a family member. And they she defends herself essentially by saying, You wouldn't understand. Yeah. No one ever does. And the important thing to note here that I think is really interesting is uh Dean is the exact guy not to have killed the family member in front of under any circumstances. And we learn her context later, so we won't say now.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I and I don't entirely remember it either, but you know we stand Bella, we're on Bella's side.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we're on Bella's side. The Dean does not understand what's going on, but that is very much a good character trait to give somebody Dean is opposed with. Yes. Um, because that is very his he can't swallow that. Yeah. So uh she says she can't get the hand back, she's already sold, it's halfway across the ocean. Um, and she, you know, they're business like I the only thing that can save me is gone because they had to destroy it. And Sam goes, Well, maybe not the only thing.

SPEAKER_00

And that's why you always check out the lore.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and Dean looks up at Sam kind of confused too, and then they cut to a graveyard, he has a pentagram on a grave. We don't know whose grave, we kind of find out. Uh, candles up, and he puts some stuff and boils this thing, whatever. Yeah, pours like blood in a vial and puts this thing in there, and starts reading from John's journal. Uh the first time we've seen John's journal in a while.

SPEAKER_00

He also part of this ritual, he says Castille, and I'm like, Yeah. Hey Diva, she's peeking through. Come on.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, come on out. Um, so well uh Dean is standing over with a shotgun, and Bella is standing there, and Sam starts chanting, and it starts raining, and the candles get blown out, and he's like, Read faster, and Bella starts walking away. Dean's like, no, stay close. And then Sam keeps reading because it's the only thing he can do. Uh the ghost like appears like uh you know becomes visible behind Dean. Dean gets thrown, and I like this action because when he hits whatever the grave marker, he like sh the shotgun goes off, which I think is fun, and he crashes to the ground, and the ghost walks up and touches Bella and she starts vomiting water. Um gross. And Sam is able to finish reading it, and behind the ghost again is his brother, the brother that killed him. This uh the ghost man is clearly not happy.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, we didn't even say, but yeah, the the captain that hung the guy was his brother. So and they mentioned Cain and Abel.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, very cool.

SPEAKER_00

I wonder if those guys will ever come up again.

SPEAKER_01

Hey-oh. Uh then the the the ghost with the stump, the one that was killed, crashes into him in this it pretty good effect. Like it's really cool. Uh he they both burst into water and kind of phase through each other and then collapse and they're both gone.

SPEAKER_00

Ghost Pem Das.

SPEAKER_01

Um the rain stops, Bella is fine. So then they're they're everything's good, they go back to the motel, she comes, or not the motel. I keep saying motel, it's like four.

SPEAKER_00

Because we're so used to it.

SPEAKER_01

The house they're squatting in. Yes, she comes in and tosses them each five grand.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she's like, it's ten thousand dollars.

SPEAKER_01

$10,000. We're even he goes, You're gonna pay us $10,000 instead of saying thank you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

She doesn't want to be in anyone's debt. She leaves, they look at it, and and Sam's like, Well, or Dean's like, Well, I know what we're doing with this, and they drive into the cart and they're looking at a map, they're going to Atlantic City. You're like, guys, he's like, play some back blackjack and drink and have a good time.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, always been on black. Yeah, which will never not make me think of Lego Batman anymore.

SPEAKER_01

And then they have an argument here, which is very important, that uh Dean is afraid.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

He is scared, and he doesn't. I mean, that's more later. This one is more um what do they bring up?

SPEAKER_00

They basically it's it's Dean being like, Look, I get it, like you're mad that like you feel like this is like on you. And Sam's like, you do not get it. Like you spent that whole season being mad that dad gave up his life for you and you turned around and did the same thing for me.

SPEAKER_01

So it's kind of just reiterating some of the stuff they've heard. But I also point we forgot to talk about the beginning, uh, that one of the things that Dean says is is once he finds out he's like, So am I out of the deal? And Sam's like, Don't you think I would have brought that up? And I think it's really telling that Dean's first question, first real question is, so am I out of the deal? He's clearly becoming afraid. And this episode and the next episode really play into that. Um so this good argument, and then and then um furthering that Dean is just within him retreated into himself and not really a person anymore, and Sam is lashing out, and then uh Dean or Sam just goes, Maybe I'll play crabs. Yeah. Um crabs, crabs, crabs, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Dean's like, maybe I'll play crabs.

SPEAKER_01

And then Sam looks at him and end of episode.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh good episode. I really enjoyed this one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. It really weird structure. It's a weird structure, but I like too that that conversation is is pretty accurate for how it feels when you're like talking to a brick wall of a person. Yes. Where they're just like they're deflecting and deflecting and deflecting.

SPEAKER_01

These two are just very good at playing brothers. 100%. It's that's 100%. The miracle of the show to me is how how good they are together. Um, anything else we missed in this one?

SPEAKER_00

Um just fun time. Always fun to see Bella. Bella's an incredibly beautiful woman. Two two episodes in a row with Bella, spoiler. Always laid. Makeup perfect.

SPEAKER_01

Again, we're huge Walking Dead fans, so like also I I met her first in this and then in The Walking Dead, but I I do love Lauren Cohen.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, it was very funny to watch The Walking Dead, and I watched it way later than everybody else. I started watching it like two years ago. And I was like, Bella! Yeah, she's here!

SPEAKER_01

Like Um Okay,

Best of "Red Sky at Morning"

SPEAKER_01

so uh Best Line.

SPEAKER_00

On silk sheets, rolling naked in money.

SPEAKER_01

So good. Mine is uh similar retort between these two, and it's Dean going, Don't objectify me.

SPEAKER_00

Don't objectify me.

SPEAKER_01

And then being proud of it, it's really funny. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

He wants that cookie. They want each other's cookies so bad.

SPEAKER_01

Uh Best Kill.

SPEAKER_00

Uh guy in the car vomiting.

SPEAKER_01

Guy in the car vomiting. That's so kill rock. Way cooler. Because it's it's not even that it's like overly violent, it's violent. But like normally when that's the vomiting blood and there's something over the top of it, something really weird about vomiting clear water.

SPEAKER_00

It's really upsetting.

SPEAKER_01

Cool. I like it.

SPEAKER_00

Reminds me of being food poisoned.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Oh no. Um, so that's that's gonna move on to our end of the season bracket. Yeah. Um, and I I should note our kill counter, I won't be flashing at this episode because no one got a kill, so it is still Sam 4 Dean 3 or Dean Zero, sorry. Used to Dean winning.

SPEAKER_00

Justice for Sam, thank you, God.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this might this thus far, this is gonna be Sam's season.

SPEAKER_00

We did litigate too. We, you know, we were like, oh, well, he summons the ghosts. Yeah, but we don't think that counts as well.

SPEAKER_01

He's not controlling the ghost, he just brings it there.

SPEAKER_00

He's just like, I wonder what this will do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so the assumption is that grave is the grave of the captain that killed his brother. Anyway, so

"Fresh Blood" Discussion

SPEAKER_01

moving on to our next episode, season three, episode seven, Fresh Blood, written by Sarah Gamble, directed by Kim Manners, a plot episode.

SPEAKER_00

That's how you know. Um that's Diva City, right there, is Sarah Gamble and Kim Manners.

SPEAKER_01

We open on a very fancy car under a bridge and a woman walking up with a briefcase, and you can't quite tell who it is on the wide shot. And I literally had the thought, I was like, this is how this is what went through my brain, and then out of my mouth. I was like, why is this woman? Oh, it's Bella! Like funny. He's like, Oh! Yeah, so it's Bella is there, and Gordon comes out of the trees and holds a gun on her. Yeah, and so he Gordon is out of prison and on their ass.

SPEAKER_00

Out of prison, quote unquote.

SPEAKER_01

He's in the prison of his own making, really, is what it is.

SPEAKER_00

It's really because she's like, I heard you were in prison, and she's like, let out for good behavior, and he's like Yeah, just looking at her.

SPEAKER_01

So he threatens her and is essentially like, Where's Salmon Dean? I heard you, you know, I've heard you've been running with him. She goes, Oh, you know, I I won't give them up unless you pay me. And she's like, I don't respond well to threats because he's like, I'll kill you if you don't tell me. And so he do Gordon things like I can scrounge up three gr 3K. I don't get out of bed for three grand and he kind of like lowers his gun and he's thinking, and she sees this little hex bag. Or what is your mojo bag?

SPEAKER_00

She calls it a mojo bag.

SPEAKER_01

Mojo bag on his on his um waist, and she goes, On second thought, give me that and I'll tell you where they are right now. And uh he goes, It's centuries old. Why would I ever and she goes, Yep, I am aware. It's priceless, I know. And so he's like, How bad do you want to know where they are? Or good luck finding them without without me. He undoes it, he tosses it to her. Uh she calls Dean.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, she's like, Hi, Dean, where are you?

SPEAKER_01

And it cuts to the It cuts to their title card and into Sam and Dean already on in the middle of a case. Uh through some warehouse. I literally wrote Salmon Dean are always in some warehouse.

SPEAKER_00

It's literally always in a weird warehouse district in an alleyway.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I think you and I I think that we think that's interesting. A lot of people don't, but we think it's interesting that the the vampires are like much more nomadic and yes, I think it's really cool.

SPEAKER_00

I mean Bohemian is the word that's the word I would use of Bohemian, and I think it's cool. I made a joke about this being kind of true bloody. Um I did not finish True Blood, just so you know, guys. I only watched like three and a half seasons. Um, but it is very Alexander Skarsgard's vampire club in that show. Like it's so it's called Spider and the Eye is a spider. Like, get out of town.

SPEAKER_01

Um so uh anyway, they they uh find a guy who has a big vampire bite in his neck and he's bleeding. And Sam stays with him. Dean runs off after the vampire and he's calling out and he can't, so he wrote she's not coming. So he rolls up his sleeve and he cuts his wrist a little bit, so a little bit of blood's coming. And uh and she pops out and looking at him and hungry and very feral, and he drops the knife, he's like, Come on! So she attacks him and he turns and dead man's bloods are right in the neck, yeah, and almost gets bit. Like, literally, I think there's a cut on his neck. Yeah. Sam rolls over, and this is just this is an important note for Dean that Dean is being reckless. Uh Sam runs over and sees Dean. He's like, cutting that a little close. He's like, I got her, didn't I?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um I think it's always so cool when they use the dead man's blood. I think that's such a cool, like, I don't know if anything else does that.

SPEAKER_01

Um there's a few other things you can like paralyze. Like there's that whatever that wood that can slow demons down and stuff like that.

SPEAKER_00

No, but I mean like I've never heard of any, I've never watched any other vampire thing with the city.

SPEAKER_01

Or you can like poison a vampire.

SPEAKER_00

Um so if you have, please let us know because I think that's such a cool thing, and I want to engage more with that.

SPEAKER_01

So uh so I got involved with that.

SPEAKER_00

So I got involved with that.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, so uh they cut to them in wherever the house they're squatting in.

SPEAKER_00

Squat number two, baby.

SPEAKER_01

And this one makes more sense that they're squatting because they had to bring a woman back tied up.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, that's like that makes more sense.

SPEAKER_01

She's tied to the chair, they're looking at her, she wakes up and they start interrogating her, and she's clearly very confused about what's happening. It's really it's really sad. Yeah, she's she says, I took something and I can't come down. I won't cut. It's been day like there was this hunger, and she's explaining, and both of them kind of like get more and more reluctant. Interesting that they do multiple vampire stories about vampires not really being the villains.

SPEAKER_00

It's really interesting. Or being tragic, yes. Her name's also Lucy, which is which is important.

SPEAKER_01

They give her a name. Yeah too.

SPEAKER_00

Her name's it's a Dracula Reference.

SPEAKER_01

A Dracula reference.

SPEAKER_00

Shout out Bram Stoker's Dracula, the film and the book.

SPEAKER_01

Um, so yeah, they they find out and then she explains that someone gave it to me at this bar, and they, you know, it's vampire blood. She ingested vampire blood, so she's become a vampire and she doesn't even realize.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she says, like, some guy named Deacon or Dixon put something in my drink, and Sam's like Dean's like, let me guess. It was uh thick and red, and she's like, Yeah, and he's like, that's great.

SPEAKER_01

That's vampire's blood, and she's confused. Anyway, they step away and they're like, We don't have a choice. And both of them just r very reluctantly agree that they just have to do this.

SPEAKER_00

She's already killed two people.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's really sad.

SPEAKER_01

And so they roll over, and this is Dean's first kill of the season. I will very sadly flash the board right now.

SPEAKER_00

And it's also kind of off-screen. Like we see him Yeah, no, they don't show it. Like he walks, you can see you hear him hold, like you hear the machete get pulling.

SPEAKER_01

And she screams and he cuts her out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then there's just poor Sam and it's really good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and look, Dean Dean doesn't want to do this one either. It's not this girl's fault, but she's already attacked somebody and they they don't that they didn't get the contact info of the other vampire that's leading a like more humane lifestyle.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. The concept of them having her contact information be like, can we send you a vampire?

SPEAKER_01

So it's yeah, it's now Dean.

SPEAKER_00

The vampire rescue network is low-key crazy. I'm writing fanfiction tonight.

SPEAKER_01

Please do. And it's now Sam for Dean One. Yeah. Uh, very sadly. Okay, so uh Deacon is this other guy's name, but Gordon and Deacon are bad at undercover work. We find out because they roll into the victim of that and the call.

SPEAKER_00

Is his name Deacon or is the vampire? I thought the vampire in this.

SPEAKER_01

No, the vampire's name is Dixon.

SPEAKER_00

That guy's name Um, because also I just call him Weirdo Guy with the Jesus van because he freaks me out and I don't like his scary, creepy decor.

SPEAKER_01

He's got the kind of um No, his name is his name is Kubrick.

SPEAKER_00

That's right.

SPEAKER_01

Or was that the friend of the thing?

SPEAKER_00

No, I think that is his I think his name is Kubrick. Because they say his name when he pops up when he visits Gordon in prison. Also, do we think that this guy got Gordon out of prison? Do we think he helped Gordon break out?

SPEAKER_01

They hint at that. Yeah. Remember that his episode where Gordon's like, we gotta get me out of here. That's right. Anyway, so those two are together, and uh they're trying to ask, Did you ingest any of the blood? It bit you, and he's like, Well, no, and then Gordon completely serious and stoneface good, good, because we'd have had to kill you. And the guy kind of chuckles, and it's not a joke.

SPEAKER_00

He's not good at pretending to be FBI.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He and they they basically frame it almost like they're like, Oh, like she was really ill, and if you ingested her blood, you're gonna be sick, and blah, blah, blah. Like, it's which is really interesting.

SPEAKER_01

Like a virus or something.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, so then we cut to uh the bar, and the guy, Dixon, is uh out with this woman outside, and he has this little vial and he's about to drip it into her mouth. And Sam and Dean knock it out of his hand, and Dean punches him in the face, and there's this really great moment where like Dean punches him, they go out of camera, we panda Sam, and Sam's like, get out of here, go and so she takes off, and then we cut over, and Dean gets thrown into a wall immediately.

SPEAKER_00

Like he is getting flung so much.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think it was supposed to be funny, but it is just a funny way, like, cut back into the fight and Dean just loses.

SPEAKER_00

He just gets womps.

SPEAKER_01

So the the vampire runs off, Dean and Sam get up, and they run around the corner, and the vampire's gone, but we cut to two pairs of legs and we pan up to machetes and guns, and Gordon and uh Kubrick, I think it's Kubrick.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's Kubrick, I think you're right.

SPEAKER_01

Are standing there and raise the gun, cut to commercial break. Great cut to commercial break.

SPEAKER_00

Great cut to commercial break.

SPEAKER_01

We don't talk about that enough on this podcast, even when you watch it on Blu-ray.

SPEAKER_00

It's really fun. I miss a commercial break, to be honest with you.

SPEAKER_01

I don't, as somebody who's been watching stuff on Peacock recently. Um, it's miserable.

SPEAKER_00

I know, but it's also fun because Supernatural doesn't do the terrible um like daytime soap thing where they have to reiterate the thing that was said right before the commercial break.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, they when they cut back into it, uh Gordon is just shooting at them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So we get a little bit of an action scene. Sam and Dean duck, um they kind of have to split up, and Dean runs straight out, very recklessly, into the line of fire.

SPEAKER_00

Uh what does it say that he's so reckless most of the time that it kind of doesn't register to me anymore that he's being reckless?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and they uh Sam brings it up later. So they do that, they uh Gordon kind of gives chase, the they both have split up and Gordon is sneaking through this like warehouse, empty building, and he gets knocked out by the vampire.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So Gordon has now been snatched by the vampire.

SPEAKER_00

And that's why you don't start beef with vampires.

SPEAKER_01

That's why you don't start beef with vampires. Unless I'm well, I guess maybe sometime. Maybe sometimes. This guy's crazy. This vampire is particularly insane.

SPEAKER_00

But we find out why.

SPEAKER_01

So he's insane.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's not a good reason.

SPEAKER_00

It's not a good reason, but I anyway, we'll get into it.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, so uh Sam is nervously waiting in the house they're squatting in. He sits there's the screenshot where like pans over and he's sitting by a mirror and the door's in the background of the reflection. And Dean comes in and he's like, What took you so long? It was so reckless running into the um running into the bullets like that, and Dean just goes, Well, what can I say? I'm a badass.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

The argument doesn't go very well, and they're like, How did he find us? And Dean goes, Son of a bitch. And he opens up his phone and he calls Bella.

SPEAKER_00

Hey girl.

SPEAKER_01

And he's like, You told what, you know, you weren't calling to say thank you, were you? And she's like, No, Gordon Dixon is coming, or Gordon.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Gordon, what's his name? Gordon Walker.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Gordon Walker's coming after you. And and he's like, You didn't think it'd call us Dilzy. He's like, Well, there are two of you.

SPEAKER_00

And she's like, Immediately, too. She's like, Oh yeah, Gordon Walker's coming to kill you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And and um he's like, you know, and she's like, Well, I figured there were two of you. And Dean goes, There are two of them, and she gets nervous. She's like, Oh. And Dean Dean gives this really Jensen's very good in this moment. Dean goes, As soon as we handle this, if we get through, if we survive this, I'm gonna kill you. And she goes, What are you you're not serious? And he goes, Listen to my voice. Yeah. Do I sound serious? And she gets very nervous.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you're like, oh. Um so then I also we didn't touch on this, but when when Gordon's talking to her at the beginning, she he's like, Sam Winchester is the Antichrist, and she's like, Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she's like, You're crazy. That's just a guy. Like, that's just a guy.

SPEAKER_00

So she's like, I know that guy. I just saw him go on a date with an old lady so he could steal a reap, a jerky hand. Like he's not the Antichrist, bro.

SPEAKER_01

Um, well, we we cut away from that and we cut to Gordon tied to a bed, and he wakes up and the vampire has two women chained up to the ceiling, and he's feeding them blood. He has turned them against their will, they're very confused. He's explaining uh this will will pass. And Gordon kind of makes some snide comment at him. Um and the vampire walks over, he's like, Oh, isn't that right? My kind's almost extinct. I have to keep making more. Isn't that right, Gordon?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Says Gordon's last name, too.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Gordon Walker, and Gordon kind of looks at him and says, Oh, I know all about you. You're you're the maybe the greatest living vampire hunter. You're a big reason why my kind is extinct. And Gordon just lays the fuck into him.

SPEAKER_00

It's really he calls it he called because the guy refers to the women he's turning as his daughters, and then Gordon's like, you mean fang whores? And you're like, whoa.

SPEAKER_01

It's like that's a lot, but also we're inventing slurs for vampires on this show. So uh that's going on, and he keeps yelling at him, and the vampire doesn't want to have it. So he cuts Gordon's arm, cuts his arm, turns Gordon into a vampire. Yeah. And Gordon is freaking out and screaming and angry. Uh not good. So Gordon's a vamp now, which means he's got strength, speed, senses, only one real way to kill him.

SPEAKER_00

And you know what? It just means that we get even more Sterling K. Brown just living it up.

SPEAKER_01

I do love Sterling K.

SPEAKER_00

He's so great on this show.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I'm so sorry, Sterling K. Brown, you'll always be Gordon from Supernatural to me, and I know you've done you've been nominated for an Oscar.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Congratulations. Is that our first supernatural alum that's also nominated for an Oscar?

SPEAKER_01

It very likely is.

SPEAKER_00

And he was great in American fiction, so shout out. He also, I think he Is a uniquely beautiful man and then I get like hypnotized by watching his mouth when he talks because I'm like He whole he carries himself in such a unique beauty. Yeah, he is also just a great teeth. It's such a weird thing for me to say. Anyways, I'll stop objectifying Sterling K. Brown now.

SPEAKER_01

Um so they're talking and uh Dean's like, look, we gotta talk. If we find Gordon, he's not giving us a lot of options. And Sam's like, I agree, we need to kill him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, duh.

SPEAKER_01

And this is like it's funny to me, and Sam's like, I'm done. It's like I'm done. He won't listen, we have to do this.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, this guy keeps trying to kill us.

SPEAKER_01

So it's it makes me laugh that Dean is now nervous that Sam has the same opinion of him. It's like Dean, you think very low of yourself, don't you? Which he does, and we does.

SPEAKER_00

And you're like, don't piss me off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Don't piss me off and be like, oh, Sam's agreeing with me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I'm mad.

SPEAKER_00

I'm like, he's not being vicious. Again, all Gordon has done since he's met them is be since finding out that Sam is one of the yellow-eyed kids, is like, okay, I gotta kill this guy. And like, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So they um they get a call from Bella, and Bella's like, uh, I have Gordon's exact location. Are you ready for it? And he's like, how? And he goes, Oh, what she's like, uh uh purveyor of um you know mystic antique. She taught she communed with the spirits, they located him, and then she said, also uh they said, Leave town, run as fast as you can, don't go after Gordon. And she goes, if that means anything to you.

SPEAKER_00

I love that she also clearly did feel bad about giving up this image.

SPEAKER_01

Well, she feels bad and doesn't want to die. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But I think I genuinely, I like Bella, and I think she genuinely was like well, difference of opinion.

SPEAKER_01

I think she feels a little guilty for it, but I just think she doesn't want to die. I think she feels guilty in that she she genuinely thought Gordon was going alone and they could handle one guy. Regardless, we cut to Gordon, he is chained to the ceiling in overstimulation hell. He's hearing clocks tick and all kinds of cool stuff.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't know being a vampire meant you're in overstimulation hell. I could not handle that. Being able to hear and feel every light like that. Like the the effects here are really, really cool. I really, really love this POV of like hearing, like the clocks are like so loud and clear. The blood. And then when he gets out and he sees um, you know, all of the lights from the cars and everything, like it's really fascinating.

SPEAKER_01

He literally rips the chain off the ceiling, goes out into the world. Um, before he's about to leave, the two women are like, please help us, and he looks at them, and then we cut to him outside, and we don't know what happened. We'll find out. Um he's outside and he's looking in this uh he looks and sees a guy changing his tire in the rain, and then he looks in the reflection in his fangs, slowly come out in the reflection. Cool shot.

SPEAKER_00

And this really cool thing, too, and they don't do this with the other vampires, but maybe we haven't seen his own. Maybe he's just fresh vampires, yeah. He's got this cool like blood shot thing going on to the point where I thought his eyes were red for a little bit.

SPEAKER_01

No, they're just trying to make him look like more of a like strung out monster.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, which is really interesting. It's a really cool, like fun, minor detail.

SPEAKER_01

So anyway, uh he kills that dude. He gets in the guy's car and eats, drinks his blood, and blood splatters all over the wind the window. So Gordon is now fully a monster and killed someone.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um great blood splatter.

SPEAKER_00

We haven't gotten blood splatter on the inside of a car window in forever. Missed it.

SPEAKER_01

So we cut to Sam and Dean getting to the location, and they see the the headless bodies of these women still chained to the ceiling.

SPEAKER_00

We see a lot of gore in this episode that I'm shocked the entire episode they were showing on this debut.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, so we're we're um uh the vampire comes out and has a whole pity party monologue that is sad, but it's still a pity party.

SPEAKER_00

It's and oh, and I forgot to mention, we figure out he's so old because when he's like Hunter's killed my daughter, he like shows Gordon a portrait. Like, so this guy's old as time, bro. And he mentions a lot, like I'm staring down eternity alone. What hell is worse than that? Dean's like, hell.

SPEAKER_01

Hell and so and he's like, Dean is in the same situation he is where there's nothing left. Anyway, um Sam looks at the heads and he's like, What did this to them?

SPEAKER_00

He's like, it's not a machete, it's not a clean cut. Someone ripped the head off.

SPEAKER_01

Ripped the heads off. Gordon ripped the heads off these women because he's fucking crazy.

SPEAKER_00

Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, uh they kill this vampire, and we cut to Gordon back at um Kubrick's uh Weird Jesus RV.

SPEAKER_00

It scares me.

SPEAKER_01

He's there and they kind of have this thing where Gordon's essentially like, I've been turned.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. He's like, You gotta kill me, but I gotta kill Sam first.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's like yeah, so they he comes down to that. He's like, I can do one last good thing, and he's looking at this Jesus sign uh cross. This when he's a Jesus sign, it's a crucifix, babe. I don't give a shit. Um he's saying that in Kubrick's like, right, okay, we can do that. And he walks over and he grabs a knife.

SPEAKER_00

So cool because they turn up the sound of his heart beating. Yeah, because Gordon's hearing is lying.

SPEAKER_01

Really cool.

SPEAKER_00

So cool. I love that.

SPEAKER_01

Um and so he goes to stab him, Gordon, turns around and punches his. We don't see it, it's off camera, but we hear it. He punches his fist into his stomach and kills him. So holds up like a blood-covered hand. This episode's crazy.

SPEAKER_00

I love it. Let's get back to this. Come on, CW.

SPEAKER_01

And and I love that he's been turned into a vampire and murdered an innocent man, and he's still like, I gotta kill Sam Winchester, dude.

SPEAKER_00

I gotta get the I gotta do this, bro.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um So then uh Dean is uh walks in, he goes, I want you to stay here, Sam, and he's loading up the cult, and he's like, I'm going after him. And he's like, You can't go after him now. He's a vampire. And Dean's like, it's just another day in the office. Or he says, just another day in the office. It's a massively dangerous day in the office.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um story of their lives. And they have this really great argument. I'll kind of let you talk about that more.

SPEAKER_00

Um they just have this really beautiful argument where Sam finally lays into him and is like, He breaks down. You're scared. I'm scared. Why are we not acknowledging this? And he's and Dean's like, you don't know that I'm scared. Like, I'm not, and Sam's like, I have followed you around my entire life. I have only ever wanted to be like you. I have studied everything you do. So yes, I do know when you're scared. Yeah, and the line that breaks my heart is I wish you would drop the show and be my brother.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I wrote that one down too. Heartbreaking. And Dean breaks, he's like, Fine, we'll hold up here, we'll hold up here. Yeah, and because it's nighttime and Dean's been out looking for him, and it's just and they break their phones. Yeah. Um, and then it culminates in this thing. And so then they they fortify the place and they're sitting there looking out the window, holding the knife in the cult, and they get a call on a new phone they have, and Sam's like, Who'd you give the number to already?

SPEAKER_00

It's been two hours.

SPEAKER_01

He's like, no, but he answers it, and it is Gordon. And he's like, How'd you get this number?

SPEAKER_00

He's like, Your scent is all over the the the cell store.

SPEAKER_01

But I can't smell it now, so where are you? Yeah, kind of talks, he's like, No, nowhere, you know, don't worry about it. And he's like, Why don't you you're gonna come and find us, come and fight us, bring it on. He's like, Wow, you're gonna come to me, and they're like, Why would we do that? And he holds up the phone to this woman that he has um caught, and she's crying and scared, so they have to go fight. So tells them where they are, they have 20 minutes to get there, not a lot of time to plan. So they go in, uh, Dean has the cult, Sam has a machete. They're trying to find them. Uh, they find the woman and they untie her and they bring her out and they're like, Come on, stay close to me. And they walk under this grate and it closes, and Sam's locked on one side, Dean's on the other. They can't get through.

SPEAKER_00

It makes me laugh every time they're separated and they just resort to kicking what's ever between them. It is it is a Winchesterism. It looks like the sliding door on like a storage unit, you know what I mean? And I'm like, you guys can't just lift it?

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's the funny part is next to Dean is the chain you pull to roll it up. It's so funny! But uh if it fell like that, he broke it, is what it is. So of course he did. It just is funny. It makes me giggle because they're like, wait, yeah, so then all the lights go off on Sam's side, and this it becomes this sh uh Silence of the Lambs reference as Gordon has night vision, he's seeing in all red, and Sam's like can't see, and he's going around. I hadn't clocked until you said it, but yeah, but it's it's when he starts like tapping at the stuff, you're like, Oh, it's Silence of the Lambs.

SPEAKER_00

He even has a bob like Jodie Foster. Oh, that's awesome.

SPEAKER_01

So they're monologuing, and he's like, Well, you're kidnapping an innocent girl now. And Gordon's like, I have two good deeds left. Kill you and then kill myself. Yeah, so there's no more mob, right?

SPEAKER_00

And he also says that girl's not so innocent anymore.

SPEAKER_01

That girl's not so innocent, and he's like, What did you do? He's like, something's so much worse. Yeah. Right than just kidnapping a girl. And we cut to Dean and he looks back at her and she smacks him into the wall, and she's a vampire. And Dean very quickly disposes of her. Yeah. He just literally shoots, headshots her, gets another kill, flashes the screen. It is now Sam 4, Dean 2. Um, Gordon rushes and tackles Sam through a wall. They get in this fight, and I should note there has been Dean uh Dean versus Gordon, Dean wins. Yeah. There's been Sam versus Gordon, Sam wins. Now is the this is the first time where it is Dean versus both of them at once, and he's kicking their asses. Yeah. Um literally, Dean gets like knocked out. Dean, because yeah, Dean rolls up with a cult and he gets beat up, thrown against the wall, can't do anything a bit. He starts getting vampire blood sucked or blood sucked out of his neck. And Gordon goes over and Sam fights him a little bit, and Sam gets thrown into a thing. He has no weapons, he's looking for something, and he grabs barbed wire. I've been hinting this whole season about a kill that I have thought about all the time.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and we're here.

SPEAKER_01

And we're here. So Sam wraps barbed wire around Gordon's neck and starts pulling.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I should know it's like it's like it's not barbed wire, it's razor wire. Yeah. It's the stuff they put at the top of fences to keep people from climbing them.

SPEAKER_00

So he's just that would ever stop the Winchester.

SPEAKER_01

Not that it would ever stop the Winchester.

SPEAKER_00

And it's going, It's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

And like, look, you don't see the full slit in half, but you see the aftermath and you see blood splurting, and Sam is like looking at it and making a conscious decision of like, all right. And he cuts his head clean off. Gordon's head falls on the ground. We see it with the kind of viscera and a little bit of the spine.

SPEAKER_00

I can't believe they showed this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I cannot believe they showed this on network television.

SPEAKER_01

It's my favorite shit in the world.

SPEAKER_00

Like, genuinely, I'm like, this is some HBO shit. How did we get here?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's crazy. It was a crazy, crazy kill.

SPEAKER_01

It's incredible, and I love it more than anything.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So that happens, and uh while they're getting out, Sam helps Dean up, and he's like, You just took out a supercharged Gordon vampire Gordon with no weapon.

SPEAKER_00

And he's like, Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then they leave, and they're uh off part. I like how quiet this episode ends. Yeah. Because we've had two episodes now of like the cracks are starting to show. And instead of having another big emotional blow-up, they put that earlier in the episode and have Dean realize some stuff, you know. And now this is where Dean's like character arc really comes into play.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

In that he realizes he's got to change. So there uh Sam hands him a beer, and Dean has the hood of the Impala up, Sam's sitting on the cooler, and he's like, You figure out what that rattle is. He's like, Not yet. And he's like, hand me a box wrench. And he hands him the wrench, and he's looking at it, and he looks at Sam and goes, Hey, come here. And he hands Sam the wrench. Yeah. Without saying anything, he just starts explaining. He's like, it could be a couple of things. He's like, Well, you want me to fix? He's like, Look, you have to learn some stuff. Because earlier in the episode, I'm getting a little emotional thinking about this. Because it's upsetting. Well, just earlier in the episode, he's like Dean's like, You don't know me. And Sam's like, Of course I know you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I've wanted to be you. I've followed you around and learned from you and watched you. You're my big brother. And I find that like deeply emotional. And then Dean kind of goes, he's like, Look, I'm you gotta learn this stuff for the future. He's like, I'm your big brother. You know, you need to, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And it's this clear, like we we know Dean is so protective of the car. And we know he's so protective of Sam. And we see this setup of Sam's going to be driving this car, he has to know how to be able to fix it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And um, I'm actually gonna go end it all.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I was I was so because they're not showy in your face about it for a little bit. And then he just says he's like, I'm your big brother, big brother gotta teach you how teach you what's what, or whatever he says. And he he goes and sits down on the cooler, and Sam starts working on the car, and they just have this really, really beautiful moment that I love. And the episode ends on that.

SPEAKER_00

And then I have the note Eric Kripke, you will pay for your crimes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm gonna sob and cry. Like literally talking about it right here, I got legitimately choked up.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um, anything we missed this episode? This is a great episode. This is a good one, too. They're very fair.

SPEAKER_00

Rest in peace, Gordon. Do you remember one of our coolest villains? Yeah. And you went from being a human villain to a vampire.

SPEAKER_01

My only complaint about how they structure the season is I think if it was a full season, they would have had a third Gordon episode, and this would have been the third one. So they would have had a second one be Gordon showing up or Gordon doing something else and almost catching them.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But it's not, so they kind of truncate it and go to one because they set him up in the first episode as really like one of the threats of the season. And he's not. He's just another episode threat. Yeah. But it's good stuff, and I'm not complaining about that. It's a nature of the episode, the season being truncated.

Best of "Fresh Blood"

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, okay, best line.

SPEAKER_00

I wish you would drop the show and be my brother again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, I that is the best one. I figured you were picking it, so I picked just a funny one to lighten the mood, which is just another day at the office. Just an or an incredibly dangerous day at the office.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, hear me out. Merch idea, salmon dean in cubicles.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And there's just a bunch of like vampires and stuff all around and monsters and stuff. Yeah. I love it. Uh best kill. Gordon. Gordon. It's the only one.

SPEAKER_00

No one, there's nothing else to say about it. There's nothing else to say about it. I can't believe I saw spine on the CW. That's crazy. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

It's fantastic. We had two

What to watch for next week

SPEAKER_01

really good episodes, and you have one week. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Tell us what we got.

SPEAKER_01

One week from today to what one week from the day of release. So one you have one week to watch the next two episodes, which are season three, episode eight, a very supernatural Christmas, funny enough.

SPEAKER_00

I was telling you.

SPEAKER_01

And season three, episode nine, uh, malicious malefalecarum? Yeah, thank you. I don't know how to read.

SPEAKER_00

That's a witch episode.

SPEAKER_01

Never read that word before.

SPEAKER_00

It's um, it's like a very famous like witch book, I think.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, very exciting. I I I do like the witches in this show.

SPEAKER_00

They get gross as fuck. Who's ready to get gross?

SPEAKER_01

I'm excited for that. So you have one week to watch those. Uh but between now and then, you know what you gotta do. You gotta hit the road, gotta get your journal, gotta watch some TV, but remember, you know what's out there. Be afraid of the dark.
