SPEAKER_00Hello and welcome back to the show. As always, I'm your driver, Spencer, sitting shotgun is Breck, and this week we're the podcast asking the important questions. Like, is a phone call the scariest thing you can receive? Are Sam and Dean really getting desperate? And is it about time to say goodbye? This is Be Afraid of the Dark.
SPEAKER_03I don't like the answer to any of those questions.
SPEAKER_00I don't like the answer to any of them, but we gotta wa as the hard-hitting journalist that we are, we have
"Long-Distance Call" Discussion
SPEAKER_00to find out. Anyway, let's just jump straight in.
SPEAKER_03Let's get into it.
SPEAKER_00Season three, episode 14, long distance caller, written by Jeremy Carver, directed by Robert Singer. Weird one to get Bob in on, I think.
SPEAKER_03It is a little bit weird, but it makes sense with the emotion of the episode. Yes.
SPEAKER_00I it just i of the of these two, of this little little batch we have, I would have thought you would have put Singer on the next one.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Correct.
SPEAKER_00For plot reasons. True.
SPEAKER_03Um this was an episode that I kind of remembered, and then as we watched it, I was like, oh, I don't remember anything except this final like I remembered it ended in the call center. Um but and I remembered it had something to do with calls, and it wasn't really the people calling.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I have some I have some questions about that.
SPEAKER_03I looked up the actual th monster from this episode of Wikipedia, and they kind of like messed with the lore in a way that I find really fun, because I guess there's just not a whole lot of like um So get this. The lore says The lore is not deep, and when I Googled the monster from this episode, it pops up with the the writer of this episode being like, um, there wasn't a lot of lore, so I just kinda, you know, tweaked it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna have some questions about that.
SPEAKER_03It's pretty interesting.
SPEAKER_00Um okay, let's get into it. Uh opening on a dark and stormy night, pouring rain outside. This is a really long, weirdly paced cold open.
SPEAKER_01And the lights will flicker.
SPEAKER_00And the lights will flicker on and off. Uh the phone rings, and a guy who's been throwing back scotch uh picks it up and he's talking to somebody named Linda, and she's clearly like, she's like, I miss you, I want to see you, and he's clearly freaked out by this. Uh as this is going on, essentially he says, No, I can't see you. She's like, Why won't you be with me? Whatever, I'm lonely, I miss you. He slams the phone down, he starts freaking out, he slams, slams, slams once it rings again, rips it out of the wall and throws it.
SPEAKER_03You used to be able to rip your phone out of the wall.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we really we're losing recipes.
SPEAKER_03We're losing recipes. I can't like the the best way to do that, you have to fully destroy your phone now if you want that to happen.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, that's what this guy did, but I know, but it's uh there used to be drama.
SPEAKER_03There used to be panache.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you used to be able to like I used to be able to unplug a thing from a wall and be like, nobody can call me.
SPEAKER_03There was unstated horror in being able to cut a telephone line.
SPEAKER_00Very true. Very true. Let's get back to Let's get back to those times. Um anyway, the phone that is now broken and not connected to anything on the floor rings. Uh-oh. And he uh quickly pulls a gun out from the drawer, puts it to his chin, and says, Fine, Linda, you win. And shoots himself. He shoots himself in the head and blood splatters everywhere, supernatural, cold open.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, all over the white phone. Good touch.
SPEAKER_00All literally all over the fine white phone. Um cut to I love one missed call. Yeah, I mean, this is one missed call to the episode.
SPEAKER_03It's one missed call. It's the ring, it's you know.
SPEAKER_00Um we cut to Dean sitting on a bench in what is clearly the rain, but not supposed to be raining. It was just raining that day. Isn't TV fun? Isn't Vancouver fun?
SPEAKER_03Vancouvery.
SPEAKER_00He is uh choking back a hot dog. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I love the way he chews.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh he he you're you were exactly right. He he nobody takes a big bite like Jensen actually.
SPEAKER_03He's he's a real good muncher. Yeah, he likes to in more ways than one, if you know what I mean.
SPEAKER_00So he's he's getting off the phone with Bobby, he tosses Sam a soda, and he's like, hey, there's this thing in in Ohio. In Ohio, these people getting these calls, and then he winds up dead, static on the phone, that whole thing. He kind of lays it out. And Sam does not understand what they're doing. He's like, dude, we're staring down the end of this year that you have, and we don't have the cult, and we need to find something. And uh you want to call Ruby. Yeah, let's call, let's summon Ruby, and Dean reveals here, and they get in an argument, and Dean reveals here that Ruby cannot save him. That she told him point blank, and Dean's like, So, or Sam Sam's like, oh, so you've just failed to mention that? You lied to me. He's like, You're not one to talk about lying, because Sam was also lying.
SPEAKER_03And he gets off, you really want to talk about who's keeping secrets from who?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Not good. Dean walks off, or sorry, Sam starts walking off, and Dean's like, he's like, Where are you going? He's like, I guess I'm going to Ohio, and he throws his can away, and boom, they're in Ohio.
SPEAKER_03They're interviewing this really irritable widow, which can't blame her.
SPEAKER_00The theme of this, these two episodes is nobody nobody's fucking with the Winchesters right now.
SPEAKER_03It's kind of funny. Sometimes their vibe's just bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they they do not want to talk to the Winchesters in a way that I really appreciate.
SPEAKER_03It was really funny.
SPEAKER_00So she's all mad, and obviously, very good reasons for her to be mad.
SPEAKER_03And she's like, I told already gave people this information. Why are you asking me for more information?
SPEAKER_00So they get her to explain it and talk about oh, the phone was here and this weird thing, and there was blood everywhere. And uh Sam goes and checks the phone, and there is a recent call from SHA33. Shay. Um, which sh yeah, Shay. Shay uh which Sam clocks and he like taps the call already and Dean turns like, Are you hiding anything from us, baby? Plays hardball with her essentially.
SPEAKER_03You know, lying to the police is a capital crime, and he looks back at Sam and Sam goes, Yeah. And he's like, in some places, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so she breaks and explains that one night she heard her husband talking on the phone to someone named Linda, and when she picked up the receiver, the or the other line, uh, there was no one else in her husband, appeared to be talking to herself.
SPEAKER_03Um it's very spooky. You used to be able that's another thing we've lost with the loss of landlines, is being able to pick up and like um overhear an eavesdrop.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I miss it. You can't do that with a cell phone. No. Lame.
SPEAKER_00I'll clone your cell phone and do it. Would that make you feel better? It would, yeah. Okay, cool. Appreciate home. Um so then we cut back to the motel room, and Dean is the one doing research. Fun, fun shakeup here at the last little bit of his life. Um, he found Linda and she died, and uh her and Ben, the husband from the cold open, were high school sweethearts, and a drunk driver drove into them and he walked away.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and she didn't.
SPEAKER_00But she was cremated, so they don't know what's going on. You can't be a ghost because the body was cremated. Um, and Sam points that he's like SH33 Shay is a very old phone number.
SPEAKER_03Like century-old phone number.
SPEAKER_00Old old, nobody's using it anymore. Um, and then they're like, okay, well, we know somewhere where we can figure that out.
SPEAKER_03He also says it's a crank telephone number. Like, I love the concept of it's so old that also I was sitting here, I was like, that's like well over a hundred years ago. They're talking about it like it was only a hundred years ago, and then I was like, oh my god, I forgot that this episode is so old that the early 1900s were a hundred years ago, not a hundred and twenty-five years ago.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the passage of time.
SPEAKER_03Oh, the passage of time.
SPEAKER_00Um funny note here, they're at the set uh telephone company and they've changed into different suits.
SPEAKER_03Different cheap suits.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's it may like where do they where do they keep all this in the Impala? There's never anything in the back seat. The trunk is always empty. Where's where?
SPEAKER_03That's a great question. I love the concept that they have a bunch of garment bags and they're just all on the like in the foot, the footwell.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like in the back, like they're like, no, no, no, it's clean back there. And like Sam looks back and he's like, All our suits are on the floor.
SPEAKER_00It's what it's gotta be.
SPEAKER_03It's gotta be that.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, funny thing, the uh the impala is a mystical magical item that I love.
SPEAKER_03Genuinely, that's Mary Poppin's bag right there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so they're walking and uh little CGI bug kind of flies by Sam and he swats it away. And the guys like, Oh, sorry, we got kind of a hygiene problem down here, and they round the corner, and Stewie is uh watching a bunch of porn on the work. He's and he goes, and I quote, I don't know how this got here. And he's like trying to block it out and get it, and the guy's like, tell them what they want to know. The boss guy's like, tell them what they want to know, and he leaves, and the guy's like he also introduces them as Mr.
SPEAKER_03Campbell and Mr. Campbell and Mr. Raimi.
SPEAKER_00With Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell reference, which we love. Love you guys. Um love those guys.
SPEAKER_03Please, Sam Raimi, come or Bruce Campbell, come on the podcast.
SPEAKER_00And talk about a show you were never on. Why was Bruce Campbell never on Supernatural?
SPEAKER_03That is kind of fascinating because he does Ash versus Evil Dead later. It's not like he's against the idea of doing television.
SPEAKER_00No, he should have been. And maybe he is at some point, I've just forgotten, but like tell us, has Bruce Campbell been in Supernatural?
SPEAKER_03Comment below. I would love to know if he was.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm I can't wait for that. Um so then Dean kind of looks at this like nervous guy who's just been caught watching a bunch of porn. He's like, is it Asian Bust uh BustyAsian Beauty.com becomes a running thing, and and the guy's like, no, and he looks at his screen and clicks out of the tab and he's like, bro, tip, the platinum membership worth every penny. Dean is subscribing to porn websites. I mean think about that, guys.
SPEAKER_03And again, this is our only our second mention. They mention it because he crashed he quote unquote him crashed Sam's laptop that with the trickster did with bustyAsianbeauties.com last season. So good running gag.
SPEAKER_00Um, very funny.
SPEAKER_03Woke King paying for his porn?
SPEAKER_00I guess. I mean, if you're gonna, you know what I mean? Like, sure. Uh I love that that is just a running gag for the writers who are like, we're gonna make Jensen seem like he has Platinum membership.
SPEAKER_03He can't even keep a credit card half the time because it's all in like it's having to re-subscribe. The concept of him with every new credit card re-subscribing to the platinum membership of BustyAsiaBewties.com.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Hysterical.
SPEAKER_03Hysterical.
SPEAKER_00Uh okay, so then Dean threatens the guy to help them, and when he leans back, the guy like turns around, gets on his computer, and starts looking up the number. Um, because he's claiming he's like, that's historic, no one uses that number. Like, well, you're gonna look it up. And Dean threatens him, and then when he gets up, he gives Sam one of these, he's like.
SPEAKER_03The best part is he's like, My buddy here asked you for the phone number, so you're gonna find it. And then I love they pull back, and Sam's face is all like pointy. I love when Sam like actually tries to look intimidating. Uh because it works really well when you're six foot four and you're you're Jared Padelecki.
SPEAKER_00You look like Jared Padelecki, yeah. Um uh very funny. So uh he finally he can't tell them, I can't tell you where it's coming from, but I can tell you where it's going. And he says, There's like 10 houses that have gotten calls from this number in the last like two weeks.
SPEAKER_03Scary.
SPEAKER_00So they split up and they go looking, and Sam has rented a car, which I think is a funny detail.
SPEAKER_03Two episodes in a row, this one and the next, he rents a car.
SPEAKER_00I think they were like, we gotta cover our bases. When they split up, one of them has a car rental, which is just funny. I'm picturing them in like a Hertz signing the paperwork.
SPEAKER_03It's so funny. Later in the next episode, we see like a thing and it's like a fake one. It just makes me get crazy.
SPEAKER_00Oh, this one has a fake one. Yeah, it's oh yeah. It's like a bumper sticker where it's because the the uh teenager in a minute clocks it. Anyway, so Sam goes and knocks on this door, and this dad and this son um are standing there, and he explains like some people have been getting some complaints about calls, um, static calls from weird numbers like no, none of that here. And Sam clocks the teenage daughter in the background who clearly looks frightened. So he's like, Okay, so Sam goes to leave, and she's outside. She's like, You're not with the telephone company. He's like, Uh, what do you mean? Uh who at the telephone company uh has a rental car and a cheap suit.
SPEAKER_03Um which is fun that she clocks him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because he clocks her, she clocks him, so and then he kind of empathizes with her. He's like, you know, I was I was there once hearing things, and he's like, I'm telling you, it's real. You're not alone.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you're not crazy.
SPEAKER_00Um I I like that. I like that there's just this little moment of Sam getting to be the empathetic one of like, no, no, no, you're not crazy.
SPEAKER_03It's my favorite of um they always do, and it we've continued our pattern of Sam gets paired with a troubled teen. Like Dean gets kids, yeah, and Sam gets troubled teens.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um then we And she reveals that she's been talking to her. Her mom, who died three years.
SPEAKER_00Um they uh move on. Uh uh uh the exonic.
SPEAKER_03Sam calls Dean.
SPEAKER_00Sam calls Dean, and Dean's walking down the street, and he's like, all this crazy stuff. He's like, This old lady who's been um having phone sex with her dead husband.
SPEAKER_03Who died in Korea.
SPEAKER_00Who died in Korea, and he's like, give me a whole new meaning of the word necropilia. And this this woman that's walking past, like, looks at him disgusted, and Dean doesn't react for a second, and she walks away and then he stops and he turns and looks at her and then looks back.
SPEAKER_03It's very funny.
SPEAKER_00He's peeved, whatever, he hangs up, he's gonna get in the impalit, and he gets a call and he checks it and he flicks it open, thinking it's Sam, because who else is calling this man? Uh, and it's John, voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
SPEAKER_02Hey girl.
SPEAKER_00Uh Jeffrey, check that sweet, sweet supernatural check. Oh, cash it. Take it.
SPEAKER_01Just one more oh, love it.
SPEAKER_00Look, as much as we hate John, I do. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's got a great voice. Look, I'm not sure. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's good in this role.
SPEAKER_03Hate the character, love that sexy, sexy actor.
SPEAKER_00Uh essentially just like, Dean, it's me. And Dean is back in the motel room now talking to Sam. Sam's like, you're sure it was him. He's like, it was him. And it's this whole exchange here is just so sad because Sam's very skeptical. Yeah, Sam's like, uh and Dean's just fully wants to believe it with everything that he has. Uh because as always, when Dean is scared, he knows his dad can fix it, and his dad's not there, and he's staring down the end of his life, and he's openly admitted of how afraid he is.
SPEAKER_03And all of a sudden, John's here to pick up the mess.
SPEAKER_00All of a sudden, John is here to pick up the mess. Good shit.
SPEAKER_03Um, and he's like, Well, what do you think I should say to him next time? And Sam's like, hello. And Dean's like, Hello.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's all you have to say, and you're like, Yeah, and he storms out, and uh it's you know it's sad.
SPEAKER_03It's sad. And then he comes back and he's like, Guess what I found?
SPEAKER_00And it's because Sam's like, I can't find anything. He's like, 'cause you're looking in the wrong places, Sammy. Thomas Edison.
SPEAKER_03Thomas's compl comment and anger.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, comment and anger. Uh uh, Thomas Edison uh was born here, and he's looking at this thing, and Sam's like, no way, and they cut to Dean, he's giving this like he gives this happy little like I'm proud of him myself expression, um, which I really like. So they're at this Edison museum, and this like overly chipper tour guide is walking a whole group. Walking? We're walking, we're stopping. We're stopping. And she explains that Edison's last invention was a spirit phone that he believed he could record and communicate with the dead on. And then she's like, and we're walking, and we're walking, and so and we're not touching that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And we're walking. I love paying attention to the background characters in Supernatural because they'll always have like a funny random line for them in the background that I find really amusing.
SPEAKER_00Um, so they they leave and Sam and Dean uh EMF reader it, nothing. They're trying to figure out and they're like, this doesn't make any sense. It it it's not even plugged in. It seems like what is it? I don't even think it works that way, which I thought was funny.
SPEAKER_03Dean gets off a line of the moldies are calling the freshies.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and he's like, so they're trying to figure it out.
SPEAKER_03Actively crazy. Also, Rip Thomas Edison, you would have loved doing the Estes method with the spirit box.
SPEAKER_00So true.
SPEAKER_03Rip Thomas Edison, you would have loved Buzzfeet Unsolved in Ghost Files.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so then there, he's like, Maybe it really is dad, right? Is what Dean says. So Sam's asleep in the motel, and Dean is like, we we pant or like dolly over, and Dean is sitting at the table with a cup of coffee and the phone sitting in front of him. He looks angry because he's probably been up too long. Uh the phone rings and he answers it.
SPEAKER_03What was that comment we got? I think it's generous of you to assume that Dean's getting eight hours of sleep tonight. I think about that one a lot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's no way, right? No, that man is getting four at best. Um six on a good night. Literally. So yeah, he gets this call, and John, being John, this guy's good at imitating him, uh, is mad at Dean and disappointed that he would sell his soul. He's like, I I died for you, I don't want you to end up being a good one.
SPEAKER_03I love you, son, and that's how you know it's not Dean. Or that's how you know it's not John, because he would never say I love you to Dean.
SPEAKER_00And and Dean is like, I'm protecting Sammy, it's what you told me to do. And he's like, Yeah, so John, even fake Johns in the afterlife, uh we hate you.
SPEAKER_03We hate you, you stupid bastard.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Die again.
SPEAKER_00And then he essentially says, the demon who holds your contract is here. And he's like, oh, oh, and then we cut to the teenage girl, what was her name? Claire?
SPEAKER_03Uh Laney.
SPEAKER_00Laney. Uh Laney is uh sitting at her computer typing some stuff, and then all of a sudden she starts getting messages from her mom.
SPEAKER_03It's very AOL coded. It's so AOL code. I don't think it's AOL, but it's AOL coded.
SPEAKER_00It's AOL that they could use for free on television.
SPEAKER_03My brain immediately went to when um in Scream, the original Sydney's typing out 911 phone calls on her computer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so essentially this conversation is like the mom saying, I want you to come see me. She's like, I went to the cemetery. Yeah, I visited your grave. That's not enough. And then the the thing kind of glitches and it turns to a video call, and the mom is behind her. Uh, very like I I'm really into right now techno horror. Like we're getting into techno horror is really cool. We're getting into a point. Um, that movie Undertone.
SPEAKER_03Very cool. We loved that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's a cool movie, very scary, but it's very like technology, like you're hearing this evil thing. Yes. Uh, techno horror will be more and more a thing as more and more artists become afraid of AI and just be ready for that.
SPEAKER_03Agree. Um, and I think it's really interesting too, because obviously at this point we're in 2008. So we're at this really interesting cusp of, and again, that's the the benefit of this show lasting so many years and us watching it over so many years, is we can see where they're they're now on the cusp of like this is the same year that the first iPhone comes out, I think. Like this is like we're going to be able to watch them grapple with technology, and it's fun for this in university. Like you were talking about this with our last episode of episode episode of how um we're watching the show realize it's a show.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And so now we're watching it also realize what other things it can play with, and not just, you know, in the the thing, the Calcutta, coca not Calcutta, that's the city in India. Um, the Corkada, whatever the fuck. Um it doesn't matter. Um we're seeing now how it's commenting on technology. I don't know. I just think it's really interesting. I think it's really cool that they're already starting to like comment on this like wave of like, oh, technology can impact us in ways that you're not thinking of in a horrifying and terrifying way.
SPEAKER_00Well, there you go. Um so the ghost is taunting this this girl, she screams, she's terrified. Cut to the next day, Sam walks in, and Dean has all this research in front of him. And he's essentially like, look, the the demon's been tailing us. He's found all these these demonic omens that have been following everywhere they've been. And Sam's like, I don't remember any of this.
SPEAKER_03And he's like, Oh, well, you're not a meteorologist.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's like, What about the what about the exorcism? He's like, he's like, I the can yeah, that's what he says. He's like, Dad just pulls out a exorcism that can kill a demon.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And he's like, I checked with Bobby, it's a real exorcism, but there's no proof it can kill a demon.
SPEAKER_00Dean's like, well, there's no proof it can't. Dean's very admittedly and justifiably having a bad time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, he essentially says he's waiting on the next call from John, and Sam's just like, okay, well. And Dean gets off this line, if we get this thing, it's Miller time. He's desperate. Dean is so desperate to uh to survive that he's just willing to put faith in whatever happens to fall into his lap. Yeah. Very sad, very scary. It's very sad.
SPEAKER_03And you know, he's lashing out at Sam because Sam's like, Okay, you wait on that phone call. I'm gonna go take care of this.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go check on the kid we're trying to save.
SPEAKER_03And Dean is mean and slings around like jailbait and says, like, look out for Chris Hansen.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but he's like the the important thing is like, oh, you know, you've been so gung-ho about stopping this, and we get a real shot here. And he's Sam's like, there's no proof that it's a real shot. We have no concrete evidence of anything.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You're grasping at straws when there's people who are gonna die. We need to save them.
SPEAKER_03Um and he's also like, and this kid's like really scared. And Dean goes, newsflash Sam, people are supposed to be freaked out by ghosts.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So that's my favorite line of the episode.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, is civvies are supposed to be civvies. Oh, civvies are afraid of ghosts. Yeah, like it's uh well the other thing that's important here is is Sam's like, why are you just giving in to blind faith? And Dean's like, because that's all I have. Yeah. And man. Like, oh that's a tough one.
SPEAKER_03Once again, Dean's not mad at Sam, he's mad at himself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You're mad at your dad, not at me. I forgive you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, as always. Um so then we cut to Sam talking to her and she's explaining uh what happened.
SPEAKER_03And um and we have a a a brief one first of the the kid, her little brother playing.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's in the middle of this. Yeah. So uh go ahead, talk about that.
SPEAKER_03Uh just I think it's really creepy the concept of this ghost, and you watch the tell the toy telephone, a fake toy telephone shout out, it's gonna ring. Not the same telephone, but it's still fun. Um ring, and the little boy goes and he's like, Hi mom, how are you? And so you now kind of get the fear that sh it's been talking to him too this whole time because he's not shocked.
SPEAKER_00I I have more questions about how this works, and we'll get to it in a minute.
SPEAKER_03We'll get to it. I also think it's fun that the the same Shay, Shay collar ID is on the fake telephone.
SPEAKER_00I have questions about that too.
SPEAKER_03Don't worry about it too hard. It's fun.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Um anyway, uh the the teenager is like, she she told me to come to her, and Sam's like, wait, what? What it what do you mean? And it she the what exactly did it say? It said, uh, come to me, come to me a million times. And he's like, That's not your mom. And it's like, no shit, really? It's not? I didn't know Sam. Yeah, which I I do appreciate you you and I talk about this a lot of like Sam's quick on like on the draw with an exorcism and he's quick on the draw with lore and he just knows stuff. Uh he he would have made a great guy in the chair if he didn't have the he he is he is a guy in a chair trapped in a uh uh fighter's body. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03If Sam could have just been Bobby, he would have been so happy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because nine times out of ten, Bobby's only taking care of a hunt if he can't send anybody else out to do it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so uh Dean gets a call.
SPEAKER_03He longs for middle management, dude.
SPEAKER_00Sam does long for middle management. Uh uh Dean gets a call and he finds out where the demon is, and uh he goes and he breaks and enters into this place and sets a trap, which I think this is funny. He breaks into this house to fight this demon and then makes the holy water.
SPEAKER_03With seemingly a water cooler jug.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, with just like a small water cooler jug of some kind.
SPEAKER_03Very funny. You're like, all right.
SPEAKER_00But he sets it up, he spray paints the devil's trap under the rug, and uh prison toilet. Then Sam is driving, and Sam is on the phone with Dean.
SPEAKER_03Oh, and um Sam has to save the little kid first.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so you talk about that thing.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so um, you know, he's he's leaving Laney after being like, that's not your mom, and she's like, wait a minute, where's Simon? His name's Simon. Um and the little kid, and this this freaked me out a lot was the little kids like calmly and blankly walking in the street like a few.
SPEAKER_00It's a good effect, whatever the effect they do is it's it's good.
SPEAKER_03It's good, it's really freaky. And Sam, at the very, very last moment. Manages to swipe this kid out of the street before he's hit by a truck driver.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And this is when we see Sam in his car and he's calling Dean and is like, it's a crocotta. I'm and the this is from the subtitles C-R-O-C-A-T-T-A. And I looked it up, and it's actually a hyena-like creature that also goes after dogs and not just humans.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I have some other questions about how this creature works. We'll we'll get into it.
SPEAKER_03And they mimic loved ones and lure you to kill you. And they used to live in the forest and would lure you and be like, come to me, come to me.
SPEAKER_00And Dean's like, on the phone, Dean's like, oh, that makes a lot of sense. Well, don't they live in filth? And they the phone company and they think it's uh uh stewy. They think it's stewy from the phone company.
SPEAKER_03Also I think it's funny that he goes, Dean, it's a crocotta, and Sam goes, like the sandwich?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Dean goes, yeah. Or does Sam say that?
SPEAKER_03No, he's or what did I say? Oh yeah, Sam, Sam said that.
SPEAKER_00Did Sam describe it to Dean in ways that Dean could understand? Because that would be that would be hilarious. Amazing.
SPEAKER_03Like the sandwich, Dean. No.
SPEAKER_00Like he he gets in front of it. He's like, he's like, like the sandwich before you ask that question. Oh god.
SPEAKER_03Um anyways, Krookman M and Krookman Sears, those are good sandwiches.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so he gets to the the the phone company and Dean is not there, and he's he sees Stewie coming out, and Sam is behind a car, he calls Dean, gets voicemail, and essentially like, it's here, where are you? Um he tackles Stewie into the back of the car, holds a knife to the base of his spine. I do appreciate that they never explain how to kill it, but it's really obvious how to kill it. Yeah. I think that's really cool. It's corporeal.
SPEAKER_03It's corporeal.
SPEAKER_00Means we can kill it. Um so he has him there and he's like, I know what you are and I know how to kill you. And then he's got this knife pressed against the back of his neck.
SPEAKER_03And guys, like, if you're upset about your call speed, I can fix that for you, man.
SPEAKER_00How much we're charging you, I can fix that for you. Really, uh, it's good. It's good. I also love we didn't mention this earlier, is when to get them to leave, he's like, Hey, could you guys go? Like, I was pretty busy here because he wants to he wants to make love to himself.
SPEAKER_03You know how you jack off at works? You know how you jack off at work. No consequences.
SPEAKER_00Apparently, the phone company is just real fast and loose with the rules.
SPEAKER_03And you know what? It does feel like that, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_00I guess. Um, so the boss from earlier knocks out Sam with a baseball bat. Stewie's celebrating, he's like, Yeah, that's what happens when you mess with a phone company. And uh he looks up at the boss, and the boss hits him with a baseball bat, knocks him out.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it's the boss club.
SPEAKER_00It's the boss, man.
SPEAKER_03Never trust a bald man.
SPEAKER_00Never trust a bald man.
SPEAKER_03Um she's bald and she's torturing people who have air.
SPEAKER_00So Sam wakes up, Stewie's freaking out inside, and they're tied to chairs. Uh, and the the guy. Here's where my issues come into play. So we're gonna talk about this this sequence kind of back and forth between Sam and Dean. We're just gonna talk about this part of the sequence. Uh he the I agree with a lot of what you said earlier about like the idea of playing with like monsters and technology. So this is a creature, and what he does is he he kills Stewie, teeth come out, like these barbed, like crazy looking they're weird.
SPEAKER_03They're like every other tooth is a fang.
SPEAKER_00And they like awkward and they look like they're rotted. Those pop out, his jaw unhinges, like weird effects on his face, and he then sucks the soul out of the guy's mouth without biting him. Why does this creature have teeth?
SPEAKER_03Shits and gigs.
SPEAKER_00This feels like an e it the It seems to me almost like an expensive thing to pay for for it to not be functional.
SPEAKER_03I was thinking about it, I'm like, oh, it's like a it's like vestigial. He's like, oh yeah, I mean I don't have to bite people with my teeth anymore to kill them. I can just stab them once and then eat their soul, and it's a lot less than a few. Yeah, but then he talks later.
SPEAKER_00No, he talked he talks later, he's like, I would I used to be lucky if I get one or two human souls. Anyway, they do comment on the idea of the connector how close and connected human beings are now and how they aren't. That's not really true anymore.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_00Um or how it's actually bad and it's a whole thing. It's pretty good.
SPEAKER_03I I wrote down specifically it used to be harder for the crocotta defeat, but now it's easier with more technology and less community.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03He's basically like, it used to be harder to lure people out because everyone looked after each other, and now you're also connected, but you're not looking out for each other.
SPEAKER_00Uh everyone wants to everyone wants a village, no one wants to be a shaman.
SPEAKER_03Which is um a really astute thing to say in 2008. This guy would love 2026.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, totally. Uh he goes over taunting Sam, explaining he's like, oh, all of this stuff, you're right out there. All of these phone calls and emails are still there, and if you know how to find them. Then he walks over and just puts his hand on the little like modem thing and makes a call to send a guy out to kill Dean.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And it's revealed that he he pretended to be Dean to lure Sam here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, and then he has this creepy call to this one guy who I I assume is a cop. He looks like he's in like a copy.
SPEAKER_00It's a cop whose daughter was murdered, and he's saying the guy who murdered the daughter is he's pitying this cop against Dean is what is the gist of it. My thing is why why the fuck can this creature that can just mimic people do that?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Why like to me, there's such a better version of this. One a version that makes more sense if he just realized, like, I can mimic people, so I'm just gonna make calls, and he just uses that number to make the call. Yeah. It anyway, the creature does not make sense to me in this episode.
SPEAKER_03It doesn't make a lot of sense. Um, and it makes sense now that when I googled it, Jeremy Carver, the writer of this episode, was like, Yeah, there's not a whole lot of lore, but I knew I wanted to use them.
SPEAKER_00So anyway, that cop gets there and starts uh uh very nearly beating Dean.
SPEAKER_03And if I feel like busts and shooting.
SPEAKER_00They get in a tussle, Dean's out of holy water. Dean flips him into the devil's trap, and he's getting up and he's like, the guy's like sees under the rug, he's like, What is this? He's like, You're you're whatever, your funeral pal. Yeah, and he's water. Yeah, he starts reading the exorcism and then steps over the guy, steps out of the devil's trap. He's like, How'd you do that? And Dean's like, Oh, this is a mistake. My and so they get in a fight, and Dean has to win the fight.
SPEAKER_03The concept of being like, This is my bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So sorry with what I was going on to. That's on me, bro.
SPEAKER_03That's on me, buddy. Okay?
SPEAKER_00Anyway, so uh they do that, and Sam busts out of the chains and uh gets in a fight with this guy and is kind of like getting his ass kicked. The guy has the knife, he can't win. He gets him backed up against the like a wall with equipment, and there's this little like hook.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like it's like a peg. Yeah, like a like a like a store peg.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and they keep cutting to it, and then Sam just goes bang and hits him in the head, and his head goes back, and blood just goes on the wall, and you have to kill him by hitting him in the back of the skull or stabbing them in the back of the skull.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, or the base of the like wherever the skull meets the spine. Such a good kill. So Sam gets our kill here. It is now Sam 8, Dean 4.
SPEAKER_03You're pulling ahead, honey.
SPEAKER_00I'm pretty sure that's just a Sam win. I I don't know.
SPEAKER_03It only took us two seasons.
SPEAKER_00It only took us two seasons. Okay, so that happens. It's cool, we're settling that up. Uh, they get back to the motel and Dean's cleaning up his face, and Sam walks in. He's like, Glad to see they fixed your face. And Dean, Sam's just like right back at you.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, um even when they're apart, they get their ass beat.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so then they sit down and have this really touching conversation where Dean's like, I was just willing to believe anything. Yeah. Because I'm scared, I'm terrified, I'm staring down the barrel of hell forever, and I don't want to go. He's like, and the only one that can stop it's me, and then Sam goes, and me. Yeah. And then Dean makes fun of him, and then handsome is like That's all you can say, and me.
SPEAKER_03And Sam goes, Would you like a poem?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this is kind of a the a weird episode. It's a weird episode. Or weird episode, weird ending.
SPEAKER_03It's a bummer ending.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, it's a bummer ending, but it's it ends on this like trying to end on a joke thing that I don't think 100% works. Um, anyway, d that's just my weird episode.
SPEAKER_03It pulls out and they're both like depressed watching TV with a beer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it still doesn't change the fact that they step on their own moment.
SPEAKER_03True, true.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, doesn't matter. Episode ends. Did we miss anything?
SPEAKER_03I don't think so. Weird episode. I did not remember this like at all.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, not a lot of wrap-up with the teenager that Sam, you know, was helping.
SPEAKER_03No, it just that he kills the thing. Yeah,
Best of "Long-Distance Call"
SPEAKER_03it's fine.
SPEAKER_00He kills it. Yeah. Um Best Line.
SPEAKER_03Moldies and freshies.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's really funny. Uh uh, that's a really good one. Mine is uh if we get this thing, it's Miller time. It's such a Dean Winchester ass thing to say. Um Best Kill, we're gonna have the same one.
SPEAKER_03Head on the peg.
SPEAKER_00Head on the peg. That's such a good one.
SPEAKER_03That was a really cool one.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, very cool episode. Uh very cool one. I love using your environment.
SPEAKER_03I love using your environment.
SPEAKER_00I love using your environment. All right, are
"Time is on My Side" Discussion
SPEAKER_00you ready to go on the next one?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's gonna get under this bummer.
SPEAKER_00Uh season three, episode 15. Time is on my side. It's not. Written by Sarah Gamble, directed by Charles Beeson.
SPEAKER_03Has Charles Beeson directed an episode?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. He's a couple. All right, I believe. Um okay, so this episode opens on two douchey doctor guys walking out talking about one of them's like a staying young is a brutal business. Yeah, so he's like a uh cosmetic surgeon. Um and then he gets to his car and he gets thrown in the trunk by some mysterious hooded figure, and the trunk closes, and then we cut to him walking into a hospital with blood dripping all over. He's like barefoot.
SPEAKER_01He's like barefoot, creepy.
SPEAKER_00And he's like, help me. And the the nurse is like, Well, there's nothing I haven't seen. You go ahead and move your hands, let me see what happened. And he opens his hands and off-screen his guts spill out all the stuff. You can hear it. Yeah, and he dies.
SPEAKER_03Um what we could have had if we could have seen that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03The nurse lets out a great scream.
SPEAKER_00Nurse lets out a great scream. Uh, we cut to our title card, and when we cut back, uh Sam and Dean are throwing holy water in a demon's face. They're torturing him, interrogating him, trying to find out who holds Dean's contract.
SPEAKER_03And the demons are way too scared to tell anyone.
SPEAKER_00The demons are like, this is they this is like a uh a flea bite in comparison to what will happen if I say anything.
SPEAKER_03This guy, this demon is kind of filthy for the show. Like when he's like, Your mother, she told me after I bent her over, and you're like, Whoa, can you say that here? And he's like, even if you squirt holy water in both ends, it's gonna be a flea bite compared to what this demon will do to me.
SPEAKER_00So uh they start to exercise him and he gets off one last like dig. He's like, I'll see you in hell. There's a lot of us waiting to uh to meet Dean Winchester.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you're like, ooh.
SPEAKER_00And Sam's like, should I? And Dean's like, send him, yeah. Well, I wrote in the line, uh, send him someplace he can't hurt anybody anymore, or hurt anyone else. Uh he gets sent to hell, it's the next morning, and Sam comes in a little bit too chipper. Uh Jensen plays this or Jensen, Jared plays this quite well. He's a little too chipper, he's a little too excited. He's like, hey, there's this weird case of like Well, first he's like, did you see the news this morning?
SPEAKER_03And Jane goes, stripper suffocates dude with thighs?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. He's like, No, the other thing, and then they explain the what happened in the cold open.
SPEAKER_03Um, and this guy's liver specifically was ripped out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, and so get this.
SPEAKER_00Um This is actually such a cool detail. Whoever came up with this idea.
SPEAKER_03He's covered in fingerprints of a guy who died in 1981.
SPEAKER_00Such a cool, weird, creepy idea. Um so they they're like okay, yeah, and they're thinking it's a zombie, and Dean's like, Why are you so gung ho to go on a case? And Sam's like, You were gung-ho to go on a case, and Dean's like, Don't something's weird. Dean can tell something's up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh but they go because they don't have any leads on Bella, they don't have any leads on the demons, so they're gonna go.
SPEAKER_03What else are they gonna do?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so they're gonna go hunt. Um, they're at the morgue and they ask one question. They go, Were there any bite marks around the in the wound? And the doctor, the the mortician just goes, Can I see your badges? Again, this is the the most nobody wants to talk to these two episodes that there's ever been.
SPEAKER_03And the cop goes, the guy goes, Oh, so your cops and morons? And Dean goes, No, no, we're very smart.
SPEAKER_00It's how he delivers, he's like, No, no, we're very smart. Like, even the look he does is he's not even offended. He's like looking at Sam like a lot of people.
SPEAKER_03No, no, we're very smart.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you and I got that's got to enter the vernaculars. No, no, we're not.
SPEAKER_03No, no, we're very smart. And the guy's like, Did you even read my report? His liver wasn't torn out or ripped out or bitten out, it was surgically removed.
SPEAKER_00Uh such a cool, very like jack the ripper-y kind of thing. It is going.
SPEAKER_03It's very um urban legend of my intestine my organ was stolen and I woke up at an ice bath in a motel.
SPEAKER_00So then, yeah, they cut to, they find it there was the liver removed and it was surgically done. They cut to, they're like, you know, they're walking, and Sam's like, again, a little too chipper. And he's like, Well, we got we gotta start looking at a different place, Dean. You know, we we gotta look at the survivors here, right? Yeah. They they're in a hospital, a guy has just had, what was his kidney was removed. One of his kidneys was removed, and he's like, he's just not with them. He's being snarky and sassy and an asshole to them. And he's like, My kidney just got stolen.
SPEAKER_03Like, I don't blame him.
SPEAKER_00I don't blame this, I don't blame him at all. Um They move on, and Sam's sitting at the computer and he's like, Sam's like, I Sam's like, I have a theory. And he Dean's trying to eat a burger, and he's like, one of these things was uh uh one of the wounds was uh sewn with silk.
SPEAKER_03Yes, right?
SPEAKER_00And they're talking about all these used to be very common. Used to be very common. Um, talking about uh uh filling things with maggots, and one of the victims apparently had that. Maggots. Maggots. Okay, maggots mean. I do what I have to. Uh so they they figure that, and Sam pulls out the journal, and uh John's journal and hands it to him, and it's this guy named Dr. Uh Benton Benton.
SPEAKER_03Doc Benton.
SPEAKER_00Doc Benton. Um John has hunted this guy, and he's someone who is obsessed with alchemy and found a way to immortality.
SPEAKER_03I love full metal alchemist brotherhood.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So he's he's essentially this guy who steals body parts once they wear out and uh grafts them into himself so he's become immortal.
SPEAKER_03Allegedly, John stopped this guy by taking out his heart.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, John thought he killed him. And then and then uh uh Sam says a couple more gross things and he's like, sorry, are you gonna you're gonna keep eating? Dean like looks at the burger and goes, Oh baby, I can't stay mad at you, and jumps down on the burger. It's so funny. It's really good.
SPEAKER_03Because Dean's like, he has to be near a river, he prefers in a wooded area near a river so he can dump the bile and the fecal matter and the blue.
SPEAKER_00So they have somewhere to search now. Uh there's a guy jogging in the woods, he gets snitchy snatched and thrown on the when he wakes up, he's on the table.
SPEAKER_03He's a very healthy jogger.
SPEAKER_00He's a very healthy jogger. He gets thrown on the table. Uh the doctor then uh cuts out his heart.
SPEAKER_03And shows it to him.
SPEAKER_00And shows it to him.
SPEAKER_03I love Indiana Temple of Doom.
SPEAKER_00Dude, straight up, they show it. They show it. It's kind of again they don't show like the incision, but they show the the like the hand pulling the-hear the rib crage crack. It's crazy.
SPEAKER_03I kind of can't believe they show it. And that guy dies. And that guy dies.
SPEAKER_00They did that for real.
SPEAKER_03And they show this is actually a snuff TV show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but okay, but they show uh Doc Benton and he's like Frankenstein. So this is very much like Frankenstein meets urban legends about uh um organ theft.
SPEAKER_03Organ theft, yeah. Um turning yourself into Frankenstein's crazy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, cool idea for an episode. Um yeah, he kills this guy. Uh so okay, so Bobby uh calls Dean, or does he call Sam? He calls Dean. He calls Dean and he says, Hey, we got a beat on Bella. Um, I know a guy named Rufus. He used to be a hunter, but now he's pretty much a hermit. He just sells stuff on the side.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh he I asked him to let hit me up if anybody with a British accent called.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I gave the alias, and Dean's like, she's used that alias before. That's a little sloppy, important to remember. Um and Bobby tells him, Take this really nice bottle of whiskey when you go see him. So he hangs up and he goes, Dean just stands up and goes, Okay, gotta go, gotta lead on Bella. Sam's like, we have this case to go over. Yeah. And they argue about this, and it comes out that Sam has been lying. He's heavily suspected that this was Doc Benton. And he wants to find out the secret of immortality because if Dean can't die, he can't go to hell. Yeah. And then he's like, I'll take the pill too, so there's no like you die if the deal whatever. He's really trying everything, and Dean's like, No, this is not our best shot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00We have to go do this.
SPEAKER_03We have to go get the cult, that's our best shot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we have to get the cult and kill it, that's our best shot. And they argue and they argue and they belittle each other a little bit, and Dean's like, Well, I'm going. So he takes off.
SPEAKER_03Dean leaves and Sam stays.
SPEAKER_00Dean leaves and Sam stays.
SPEAKER_03And Dean meets up with um, he ends up on Rufus' porch, which is a really great no solicitors, not I'm not making donations. Like, I will not be making donations.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's a camera, like, literally, he like rings the doorbell and then he watches the camera turn to him. And uh Rufus is a grumpy old man.
SPEAKER_03I kind of tankerous old man.
SPEAKER_00Kind of obsessed with this guy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. What and wouldn't you be?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so he eventually opens the door. He's just answering every question Dean has with no, no, why, no, why, so um yeah, he uh he explains like Bobby asked me to call him, so I called him, and that's it. He opens the door and he's looking at Dean, and he's like, Do I look like I'm here to help you? And Dean's like, no. He's like, Cool. Um so Dean's like, all right, well, before I hit the road, I have this bottle of whiskey. Is it any good? Is it any good? And Rufus just smiles at him and lets him in. Um I literally, my note is uh my notes are and I'll read them. Uh Rufus is very grumpy, and then my next note is Rufus is less grumpy with whiskey. Yes, um, he's a little bit more fascinating.
SPEAKER_03Johnny Walker Blue, which is a very, very nice whiskey. So they start Dean's like, my whiskey's usually from plastic jugs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so they start talking and it turns um contentious pretty quickly, where Rufus clearly knows more about Dean and everyone.
SPEAKER_03Dean's deal, the cult, everything.
SPEAKER_00And he has this great line where he's talking about, you know, he's like, You don't know anything about this woman, you don't know anything about her. Um, but he tells Dean, he's like, you know, you're I'm what you have to look forward to if you somehow weasel out of this. Just this crotchety old man. Um it's it's scary, right? It's like this idea of like you're dead, and he's like, I know a lot of things. He this yeah, his little speech about I know a lot of things, but the line that really stuck out is he was he goes, I know uh I know ain't no peace shooter gonna save you. Yeah. The cult, he's essentially something like you're gonna die. And he and he tells Dean that he's like, he's like, if you survive, this is what I'm gonna you have to look forward. And he goes, but you won't. Uh we cut to Sam briefly as Sam is in the woods with his rental car, with his rental jeep, and he like gets out and he has all these these cabins um mapped out that he believes are all by rivers and abandoned. So he's like, Okay, this is where I'm gonna go hunt. He's looking for him. We cut back to Dean, and the conversation continues, and it turns on to Bella. And they explain this whole thing where there's like he uh Rufus tried to lift a fingerprint, and Dean's like, got you nowhere, didn't it? And he goes, Nope, because she burned off her finger.
SPEAKER_03She burned off her own fingerprints.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so he's Which is crazy. And I don't know that this is a real thing or not, but he explains that in England, ears are just as identifiable to people as fingerprints, they're just as unique. We should look this up. I I choose to believe because it's so stupid that I kind of believe it.
SPEAKER_03And Rufus is like, Dean, you I know where Bella is, but you you don't really want to go after her.
SPEAKER_00And he's like, whatever. So he drops this form or this file down, and uh Dean opens it, there's like a mug shot of Bella, all this information, and he kind of looks up at him like, okay, he finds out where she is.
SPEAKER_03Um we cut back to Sam finding we cut back to Sam doing a sneaky sneak through the what is clearly the doctor's creepy ass murder murder cabin. Um and he finds the doctor's journal, which is very important, and and hides it on his person. Um, but he's wandering around, he sees our poor dead guy from earlier with his heart out. The the concept of it made me laugh because Sam walks up to this guy with this giant blood stain over his chest and he goes, check this poles. Um, but he does find a lady who there are just maggots on her arm.
SPEAKER_00Maggots all up on her arm. Sure. Anyway, uh Sam, she wakes up, Sam's like, I'm here to help you. And he puts this cloth over the arm.
SPEAKER_03I don't think this lady says a single word but screams.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, she does not. She's yeah, exactly. And then he hears the doc get home and we see his face more clearly. The makeup on his face is great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, with the contact and everything, very cool.
SPEAKER_00The contact and the scarring looks really good, but also the different aged flesh patches are really cool. Very cool. Um and he comes down or he's starting to come downstairs, Sam quiets around, and then they slip out a window. Uh which is I question this woman's ability to like wake up from this kind of surgery and that. Anyway, uh Sam's Don't worry about it. Sam's booking it through the woods.
SPEAKER_03Also, what part did he steal from her?
SPEAKER_00Some I'm guessing some like uh tendons in her arm.
SPEAKER_03It must be, because I was like, what the hell would you steal from just a little bit of the arm?
SPEAKER_00He's gonna steal everything. Uh Sam's booking it through the woods carrying her, he gets her into the jeep, he starts it, calms her down, and then the doc punches the window out and grabs Sam. Sam essentially holds on to him, and as his head's getting smashed into the the uh the steering wheel, Sam kicks it into drive uh or kicks it into reverse, pulls the dock, the doc gets flung, and then he kicks it into drive and runs over the doctor. And I love that the doctor just lowers his head and lets it happen. And then Sam's driving away, he gets up, and the doc like snaps his neck back in place and looks at it, and blood starts trickling out of his eye. His eyes have been damaged. Um yeah, so then we cut to Dean.
SPEAKER_03Finding Bella Bella.
SPEAKER_00So uh he pulls a gun on Bella and he's got her pinned against a wall and he's interrogating her.
SPEAKER_03She's like, I sold the colt. Um better get on a plane.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, better get on a plane, it's halfway across the world. She's like, I can call the buyer for you, and Dean's like, I don't believe you. And he starts tearing through the thing and she's inching closer to the door, and then bang, right by her head, a bullet hole goes and it's cuts to Dean. He's like, I said don't move. Um and so she doesn't. So Dean starts talking to her more and starts explaining her backstory, and I'll let you kind of talk about this.
SPEAKER_03He he reveals that her real name is Abby and that she she killed her parents. Her parents died in a car accident, and that the police believed it was a faulty brake line, but everything was, as Dean says, too crispy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um and he's like really laying into her about like, oh, and I could never kill my parents and blah blah blah. And we have this really haunting flashback of Yeah, and like it just quick in her head flashback. Quick in her head of Bella sitting on her bed and her dad comes in and closes the door behind him, and we get a shot of the door, and it it feels pretty clear to me that that her dad was molesting her.
SPEAKER_00Yes. It's it's a dark backstory, we won't get too into it. Yes. Um, but it's very clear that that is happening, and then she chooses so I don't feel bad. No, yeah, she chooses to lie to Dean, it's just they were wonderful people and I killed them.
SPEAKER_03And she puts on this uncaring show that she clearly Lauren Cro is it Crow or Cohen?
SPEAKER_00I think it's Cohen.
SPEAKER_03Um plays this so well of this, like, she has a a a smirk on, but her eyes are so dead.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh, and then Dean slams her against the wall because she gets smart ass with him or whatever. And uh it cuts to a shot, Dean doesn't notice it. Yeah, but it cuts to a shot of this root kind of like falling from above the door a little bit.
SPEAKER_03His eyes kind of flick up a little bit. No, he doesn't notice until he's about to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he steps back to point the gun at her, and there's this moment of hesitation, and he looks up and sees it. And he goes, You know what? You're not worth it. Dean has recognized what this is, but holds on to it, and he leaves. Uh Bella immediately Opens up the slip of paper she has stolen his motel receipt so she knows where he is. She makes a call and she's uh he was just here. No, Sam wasn't with him, but I know where they are. Yeah. And yep. So she sold them out to presumably and we know, but the the demons. She sold them out to the demons.
SPEAKER_03Um and we cut to s Dean calling Sam. Um and he's like, Yeah, like I you know, I didn't kill and Sam's like, so is she? And he's like, No, I didn't kill her, and blah blah blah. Um but Sam is very excited because he's read through the doctor's journal and has figured out there's no magic, there's no black magic, there's no darkness weird science. Weird science.
SPEAKER_00Um Dean gets really hopeful, and I think that's the saddest part of the episode.
SPEAKER_03Oh, cool.
SPEAKER_00Is how how immediately Dean's like, Okay, well, okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_03Um and as he's on the phone with with Dean talking about this, the doctor appears in Sam's motel room and chloroforms him and knocks him out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and Dean listens to this.
SPEAKER_03Dean can hear it over the phone. Creepy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh okay, so Sam wakes up and he's uh he's tied to the the like old surgical table.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And the doctor's explain he's like, nothing you gotta worry about, Sammy. He's like, How do you know who I am? And he has John's journal and he explains how wonderful it was for me to find out that you're John Winchester's son.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. He's like, I remember when he took my heart, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Very inconvenient. Very inconvenient. Yeah. And he explains that like immortality is very uh tedious. Like you have to do this all the time and replace body parts all the time, and um, it becomes a whole thing. And he goes, like these eyes, you know, they're damaged, so I need new ones. And so he pulls out a scoop and he clicks it a couple times and he puts the thing in Sam's eyeball and like starts to screw it. Sure does. You want us? Do you want to talk about it? No.
SPEAKER_03I didn't even write a note about it because I wanted to not think about it.
SPEAKER_00He's trying to steal Sam's eyeballs.
SPEAKER_03And they're beautiful.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so then he gets bang, bang in like three bullet holes in his chest. We cut over Dean, and the doc just slowly turns it around. He's like, shoot all you want. Bang, bang, bang. He shoots him a couple more times. Dean gets flung.
SPEAKER_03Does he have super strength because of this? I mean, I don't know. I imagine uh augmenting your body does something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's got something anyway. Uh he gets in and starts choking Dean, and Dean stabs him right in the heart. Yeah. And the guy's like, stabbing and shooting doesn't make a difference. I've just got this one. Yeah, how how how how troublesome. Uh and Dean's like, whoa, good. Means it's pumping this through your veins, and he f shows him the chloroform that uh he found upstairs. He's like, I doused the knife with it, now it's going all over you, and the doc faints.
SPEAKER_03Really cool.
SPEAKER_00And when he wakes up, I find this the way this is handled a little strange, is when he wakes up, the doc is on the table and they're like talking to him, and essentially, like, I don't know, they're gonna torture him or whatever.
SPEAKER_03And I was getting the vibe they were like gonna cut him into pieces or something like that.
SPEAKER_00But then they don't end up doing that. It's weird. It's just weird. They needed to facilitate this next conversation where the doc explains, like, I can do it for you. I can I can translate the journal for you and make you immortal. Um, and Sam wants to do it. Sam's like, What what we change one pancreas in 30 years, at least it buys us time to think of something better. Yeah. And Dean's like, nope, I'm not doing it. That's not living, that's not human.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Dean walks over and Sam's like, please, what Dean, and he goes, I uh the line is something along the lines of I'm gonna take care of him. You can either help me or not. It's up to you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Dean knocks him out again.
SPEAKER_03And when the doc wakes up, he would rather, you know, die than be whatever this is.
SPEAKER_00When the doc wakes up, he's like pushing on this metal door and light filters in and he's like freaking out because it won't open. And we cut to outside and they've dug a hole, uh, chained up a refrigerator and put the journal on top of it, and they just essentially like, have fun in there forever, and they start burying him. And Sam's haunted. Yeah. And Dean is uh angry. Yeah. Cut to a woman walking down the hall of the motel, um, of their motel. She breaks in, picks the lock, goes in, silenced gun, it's Bella, and shoots both beds. And uh she goes over and she rips open or rips the sheets down and it's blow-up sex dolls. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Um of course Dean picked that as their fake bodies.
SPEAKER_00Uh, phone rings, and he picks uh she picks up and it's Dean. And Dean's like, hey, you know, I felt your hand in my pocket. And he explains Dean goes, You made a deal. I know you did. And we get a flashback to a crossroads demon making the deal with her.
SPEAKER_03Which is so sad because I kind of don't think younger Bella knew what was happening.
SPEAKER_00No, not really.
SPEAKER_03This is clearly like teenager, young teenager Bella, and the kid, the other kid is like, I could make it so that they go away and you wouldn't have to pay me anything at all for 10 years.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And this crossroad demon flashes their eyes red. I think the other ones do. The other crossroads.
SPEAKER_00All the crossroad demons are all red.
SPEAKER_03It looks weird because if it's like a weird, like vaguely black and white, that's just what England looks like.
SPEAKER_00No, it's not black and white, it's just like a uh muted, like uh they use it a lot in flashback stuff to make it seem like a memory. Whatever, it doesn't matter. Um, she starts breaking down, she's like, Dean, I really need help, and he's like, Oh, save it. Yeah, you know.
SPEAKER_03And he's she's like basically they she had to make a deal that if she gave them the cult, they would let her out of her deal, and now they've changed it, and now that she has to kill Sam.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so they want Sam dead, and so she was supposed to do that, and then she would not she would not have to deal with her. He's not she wouldn't have to pay up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and they're like he's like, Oh, a demon lied to you, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_00See, and this is and this is where I'm kind of with Dean.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh in saying she's stupid and deserves this. She doesn't deserve it in that what she sold her soul for is like perfectly justifiable. Yeah, right. Like the worst thing that can be happening to you is happening. Of course, you're gonna do what you can to get out of it. The thing that I think is dumb is that she didn't go to them. Yes because Dean says that. Dean's like, you know the part the the dumbest part of this is that if you had come to us, we could have figured it out. We would have helped you. And she goes, and saved yourself, I know. And uh she explains that Lilith holds the contracts.
SPEAKER_03Lilith holds every contracts, all the contracts.
SPEAKER_00So the big bad of the season is coming after them and holds all the contracts. Uh so that that is um revealed. Yes. And uh my thing, and you kind of disagree with me, where I'm like, yes, she should have just gone to the two people who have survived this, have killed a uh knight of hell, who have like done the shit with the weapon that could protect them and found a way to do it, and she just didn't because she wanted to play it her way and wanted the easy way out. It's like I think she's kind of dumb for that. I I this episode's weird how they treat both.
SPEAKER_03I don't disagree.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I I kind of wish they were. I feel bad for her, but deeply. And I wish we had gotten the thing that they like to do with like it TV tropes, A Death in the Limelight, where it's like when you know when the episode is a recurring character comes back, generally the biggest episode they have is the episode they die. Yeah. Because it's the episode they're dying, you get a bunch of them. So it feels weird that Bella appears like halfway into this episode.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, I was gonna say they they you know, and she essentially is like, Maybe you can kill this bitch, you know? Like um It's really sad. But fucking she doesn't they don't have the cult, so how are they gonna whatever. Bella they hang up and the clock's ticking and uh Bella gets killed. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Rest in peace, end of episode.
SPEAKER_00They have the end of Bella is weird because they make such a fun character.
SPEAKER_03Yes, and then she's gonna be able to do it.
SPEAKER_00And then dies in such a weird dark way. Yeah, it's very interesting. I'd be curious to know what the decision was there. Because, like, yes, she portrays them a bunch, and yes, we're on the Winchester side ultimately. Um anyway, that's the end of the episode. This was a good one. I like this.
SPEAKER_03This was a good one, it's a bummer. It's a bummer of an episode. It's it's you know, we'll see a track record of how the show tends to treat side female characters going forward.
SPEAKER_00It's not amazing.
SPEAKER_03It's not amazing. Yeah. Um, she just wanted the abuse to stop, man. Yeah, no, again, I feel so. It would have been so fun to have her for just a couple more at least until you know Lauren Cohen had to go do Walking Dead.
SPEAKER_00Again, if this had been a full season, we probably would have gotten two more episodes with her.
SPEAKER_03Agree.
SPEAKER_00Um, all
Best of "Time is on My Side"
SPEAKER_00right, uh uh best line.
SPEAKER_03Stripper suffocates due to death with thighs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's really good. Uh mine is uh I know ain't no peace shooter gonna save you. It's just dark and scary to me, and it's delivered.
SPEAKER_03Yeah is upsetting.
SPEAKER_00In this fight, yeah. Uh best kill.
SPEAKER_03Um The Guy's Heart getting ready.
SPEAKER_00Guy's heart getting cast. So crazy. Choice. Uh no kill this episode, so it's still Sam 8 Dean 4.
SPEAKER_03Dean, you might be screwed, baby.
SPEAKER_00Uh Dean, you are screwed. All right.
SPEAKER_03Oh
What to watch for next week
SPEAKER_03boy, what episode do we have next week? Surely nothing. Too traumatized. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So you have one week from today to watch one episode of TV.
SPEAKER_03Yay.
SPEAKER_00And that one episode is the season finale of season three, season three, episode sixteen, no rest for the wicked. I think it's all gonna work out.
SPEAKER_03Guys, I think it's gonna be okay.
SPEAKER_00I can't wait to find it. The rest of the show is just them at the beach.
SPEAKER_03It's gonna be twelve seasons of interpersonal drama and nothing else.
SPEAKER_00Twelve seasons of chilling out with the boys. Um, anyway, uh, between now and then, you know what you gotta do. You gotta get your journal, gotta hit the road, gotta watch some TV, but remember, you know what's out there. Be afraid of the dark.
