Stronger After The Storm
You survived the heart attack — but now what?
Welcome to Stronger After the Storm, the podcast for men over 50 rebuilding their lives — emotionally, mentally, and spiritually — after a heart attack. I’m Dougie, and I know this road. At 50, I had a heart attack that changed everything. What came after wasn’t just physical recovery — it was fear, anxiety, silence, and a deep questioning of identity and purpose.
This show is for the men who lie awake wondering, “Am I going to die tonight?” “Will I ever feel like myself again?” “What do I do now?”
Each episode is real talk — no sugar-coating, no fluff. Just honest stories from a man who’s been there, still there, and still rebuilding. I’ll walk with you through the tough stuff: fear after heart attack, isolation, masculinity, emotional healing, connection, and reclaiming life on your terms.
We’ll explore topics like:
- Anxiety and panic after heart surgery
- Rediscovering identity and purpose after trauma
- Mental health for older men
- What strength really looks like now
- How to reconnect when you're feeling alone
- Honest reflections and conversations with other survivors
Some episodes are just me sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned. Others will feature real men and heart professionals who understand what we’re up against. If you’re looking for hope, direction, or even just someone who understands — this podcast is for you.
You’re not broken. You’re rebuilding. Let’s do it together.
New episodes every week. Listen on Apple, Spotify, or your favourite podcast platform — and head to StrongerAfterTheStorm.com to join the private newsletter for reflections, support, and updates.

Episode 21-Finally Some Steady Ground, The 7-Day Mind Reset Plan
The first seven days after everything changes can feel mentally relentless.
Your body may be steady, but your mind can feel anything but.
In this episode, I share the 7-Day Mind Reset Plan that helped me find some steady ground again — not by forcing positivity, but by calming the noise, slowing my thoughts, and giving myself something solid to lean on when my head was running ahead of everything else.
This isn’t advice or instruction.
It’s lived experience — shared honestly — for men rebuilding confidence, control, and a sense of direction after a major life shock.
This episode also marks an important turning point for Stronger After The Storm: moving from survival mode into rebuilding everyday life, one step at a time.

Finally, some steady ground. Launching the 7-day Mind Reset Plan. If you've been listening to this podcast for a wee while now, you'll know I don't rush things. This has never been about quick fixes or big promises. It's always been about real recovery, especially the mental side that never shows up enough on discharge notes. At follow-up appointments you might be asked, How are you doing? Everything okay? But if you're anything like me, you don't really open up about what's going on in your head. You talk about the physical side instead, the meds, the walking, the numbers, partly because you're still in fear, partly because you're confused, and partly because there's a worry in the background that it could all happen again. And that's why today matters. Because after a heart attack, there comes a point, sometimes quite early on, where your body looks like it's healing, but your head hasn't quite caught up yet. The appointments slow down, the meds are doing their job, life starts to look more normal on the outside. And yet inside you might still feel on edge. That quiet part of recovery, the bit that lingers in your head is what this podcast has been circling for a while now. It's what brought me to create this. I remember vividly what those early days were like for me, the fear, the mental noise, the constant sense that something might go wrong, and I knew that if I went through that, there must be other men struggling with the same thing. Over the last few episodes, I've talked about that unsettled stage when things appear stable but your nervous system doesn't feel safe yet. That was the hardest part of recovery for me. Not the physical healing, not the medication, but learning how to live again without constantly thinking something was about to go wrong. And that brings us to today. Because today I'm releasing something I've been quietly building in the background. Something I keep coming back to again and again, asking myself, what actually helped me when my head was at its worst? So I put a Wii plan together. Something simple, something steady, something that might support another man going through the same mental struggles I had in those early days. It's called the seven-day mind reset plan. Now, this isn't a medical programme, it's not therapy, and it's definitely not about forcing yourself to think positive. It's a simple framework based on my lived experience designed to help your nervous system settle a bit after a heart attack. Especially in those early days where your body might look stable but your mind doesn't feel settled at all. Each day focuses on one small thing, one small shift, nothing overwhelming, nothing you can fail at. And I've made it free because I remember how vulnerable that stage of recovery felt and how little practical support there was for the mental side of it. If this podcast has struck a code and you've recognised yourself somewhere along the way, this plan is simply an extension of that support. You'll find the link to the free plan in the show notes below and on the website strongerafterthestorm.com. As always, take it at your own pace, there's no rush, there's no pressure. Before I go, I want to say this: needing support with your head after a heart attack isn't a weakness. It isn't soft, it's a weariness. It's recognising that something else is going on alongside the physical recovery and choosing to steady yourself rather than ignore it. And learning how to do that is part of rebuilding a life that feels worth living. If you found value here, please follow the show, share it with someone who might need it, and leave a quick review. It genuinely helps other men find this space. And don't forget to click the link below to get your free plan. It might be the thing that gives you a bit of support in those quieter moments. This is Stronger After the Storm. I'm Dougie. Thank you for listening and I'll see you next time.
