Stronger After The Storm
You survived the heart attack — but now what?
Welcome to Stronger After the Storm, the podcast for men over 50 rebuilding their lives — emotionally, mentally, and spiritually — after a heart attack. I’m Dougie, and I know this road. At 50, I had a heart attack that changed everything. What came after wasn’t just physical recovery — it was fear, anxiety, silence, and a deep questioning of identity and purpose.
This show is for the men who lie awake wondering, “Am I going to die tonight?” “Will I ever feel like myself again?” “What do I do now?”
Each episode is real talk — no sugar-coating, no fluff. Just honest stories from a man who’s been there, still there, and still rebuilding. I’ll walk with you through the tough stuff: fear after heart attack, isolation, masculinity, emotional healing, connection, and reclaiming life on your terms.
We’ll explore topics like:
- Anxiety and panic after heart surgery
- Rediscovering identity and purpose after trauma
- Mental health for older men
- What strength really looks like now
- How to reconnect when you're feeling alone
- Honest reflections and conversations with other survivors
Some episodes are just me sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned. Others will feature real men and heart professionals who understand what we’re up against. If you’re looking for hope, direction, or even just someone who understands — this podcast is for you.
You’re not broken. You’re rebuilding. Let’s do it together.

Episode 22 — When You Realise You Were Never in Control
Driving, awareness, and ordinary life after survival
After a heart attack, it’s not the big moments that always hit hardest — it’s the ordinary ones.
In this episode, I talk about getting back behind the wheel about a month after my heart attack, and what driving quietly revealed to me about control, awareness, and responsibility.
This isn’t about fear.
It’s about noticing life more clearly.
Driving became the first everyday reminder that control was always an illusion — and that what replaces it after survival isn’t panic, but presence.
If you’re not driving yet, this episode isn’t something you need to think about now.
There’s no timeline you should be on.
It’s simply a reflection on how ordinary life feels different once you’ve been forced to slow down and pay attention.
If you’re still early days and your thoughts feel unsettled, I’ve created a calm, supportive resource called the 7-Day Mind Reset Plan — nothing heavy, just something to steady your head when it won’t slow down.

In the last episode, I talked about finding some steady ground again, about things settling, not perfectly, but enough to breathe. This episode sits just beyond that, because once life steadies a bit, everyday things start creeping back in, and sometimes they show you something you didn't expect. For me, that was driving. I didn't get back into a car straight away, but it was about a month after the heart attack before I drove again. Not rushed, not pushed, just when it felt right. The first proper drive wasn't anything dramatic. Ordinary road, ordinary traffic, the car felt familiar, my body felt fine, but something had changed. Not fear, awareness. I noticed other drivers more than I had ever done before. I've always been fairly aware on the road anyways. I've ridden motorbikes for years, and that teaches you quickly to watch other people's mistakes. But this was different. This wasn't rider awareness, it was something quieter. Late breaking, cutting corners, phones and hands, nothing extreme, just the everyday chaos we all accept as normal. And I remember thinking how thin the line really is. How close just another drive sits to everything changing. What surprised me most was this. My head wasn't loud, it was clear. No panic, no spiraling thoughts, just an understanding that driving, like life, is shared space. You can do everything right and still be affected by someone else's moment. That's when it landed. I'd never really been in control before, I'd just believed I was. The heart attack didn't suddenly make driving more dangerous, it stripped away the illusion that it had ever been safe because of me. What replaced that illusion wasn't fear, it was presence. Looking further ahead, leaving more space, letting go of urgency. Not because I was scared, but because I understood the cost of not paying attention. This didn't feel like weakness or anything like that. It felt like maturity, maturity on the road. And if you're not driving yet, this isn't something you need to think about now. There's no timeline you should be on. This is just one of those ordinary moments that comes back when you're ready and quietly shows you how life feels different now. Driving was the first everyday reminder for me that life isn't about control, it's about awareness, responsibility, being properly present. If you've been listening along and you're still in early days, I've put together the 7-day mind reset plan. Nothing heavy, just something to steady your thoughts when your head won't slow down. You'll find it linked in the description or wherever you're listening. In the next episode, I want to stay with everyday life, how confidence starts to return but not evenly, and how that can catch you off guard. If this episode resonated or you got a little value from it, please consider sharing it with someone who might need to hear it. It helps the show more than you know. This is Stronger After the Storm. I'm Dougie, thank you for listening, and I'll see you next time.
