A handmade hat can look simple in a photo, but the real story is in the build: the materials, the hours, the finishing, and the choices that separate “custom” from truly high-end. We’re joined by our brother Eddie J of Eddie J Exotic Hats, and he walks us through how Chicago hat culture and a hustle-first mindset turned into a luxury custom hat brand built on detail and authenticity.

We get into Eddie’s process and signature style, from genuine python snakeskin and lizard to stones, patches, and color-coordinated straps that stay sturdy for years. He explains why every hat ends up one of a kind, especially when you’re hand painting and glazing exotic skins, and why he refuses knockoff bases in favor of authentic fitted hats. If you’ve ever wondered why one hat costs $200 and another costs $500, he breaks it down in plain language: time, materials, and craftsmanship.

We also talk business: who he designs for, how he thinks about reaching a worldwide audience, and why social media marketing on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok is the engine right now. We touch on wholesale bundles, VIP custom orders, and the long game of building a brand that can outlive you and support your family. Tap in, share this with somebody building a brand, and make sure you subscribe and leave a review so more people find the show.

How The Hat Hustle Started

SPEAKER_02

Could I take this motherfucker apart and put it on a new hat? This motherfucker costs too much. I keep I fucked up my hat. Right. I can't explore that, so I man, I I I I get arrested for a motherfucker. Aggravated battery. You remember this good. Yeah. Aggravated battery on the p on the on the security guys in the building. Right. Yeah, so man, I couldn't do nothing. I couldn't hustle. So my ass was getting dirty. I was in, I was on, I was on home per farming. So I'm on home per farming, not just man. I took I took a hat apart and put it on a new hat. And I came out with it on. So motherfuckers were like, everybody looking there, like, where you get that one from? That motherfucker, like, let me see that one number. I ain't even want to see it. Uh-huh. I made it myself. So I'm like, I'm thinking they're hoping they don't catch nothing wrong with it. Because it's a fake one. I made smoke myself. At this time, I made a fake one. Right. At this time, this is the knockoff. This who inspired me though, Bryas. Yeah. I was inspired by Bryas back then. This 30 years ago when I first started making them as a shorty. So I'm 15 years old. So I finally told him I feel like, man, I made this. Man, get the fuck out of here. You made this. Yeah, man. I did that. I took everything. You gonna do mad for me? I'm thinking they gonna be like, man, that dirty ass old laugh, that that shit ain't. Man, you gonna do mad for me? I'm hell yeah, come on, give me the money. I started doing that shit since I was a shorty just off a hustle. You know what I'm saying? So fast forward. When I get grown, you know what I'm saying? I'm gonna fast forward because there's a lot to that. I'm gonna fast forward till I get grown. My next inspiration was Don C. Right. See, now Don C, you know, you know Don C make the jerseys and shit, make the shit with Jacob. You know what I'm saying? Y'all probably used to get shit from him too back in the day. Right. When he was in Chicago making little shit.

SPEAKER_01

It was him and uh uh uh uh not JB, but uh I forgot his name. You know, he was an African dude. MB. MB, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. I remember y'all used to get a lot of shit made from him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So um he um he came out and I seen the video. I was already making a little search and shit. So this I had I had I had this, I'm gonna say this like 2009. See, back when I it was back in the 90s when I first started. I wasn't even thinking I was finna be doing this later on.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So fast forward, I stopped doing that shit. We really stopped wearing them hats. We started hustling, getting money, so I left that shit alone. Fast forward, I go to the joint a few times, I get home. I don't wanna be in the street no more. So what I'm finna do, I start trying to make t-shirts and shit, you know what I'm saying? Make do another hustle. I'm gonna go another round, make my clothing line. So I see Jigger and motherfucking Kanye on the video with the hats on with the snakes. Right. Forgot the video, but they out there, it's Jigger and Kanye and they got the nameless on them, but so I'm like, damn, they wear. I'm like, hold on. So I flip that, they're like, dungeon. I'm like, 400. 500. Right, right, right, right, right.

SPEAKER_00

They listen to me, boy.

SPEAKER_02

I was doing this shit when I was like, and all this shit, this shit high as fuck, though. I'm like, God damn. I'm oh shit. I see why these motherfuckers was two or three hundred. So I'm like, hold on, you know, get my first few little skins and shit. I swear to about the first week, and I made 2500 off them motherfuckers. Yeah. The first week. That was a bad room back then. Man, my shit took, my shit took the first, well, I because I knew what I was, I was already a professional doing that shit. Right. I was I had by that time, I had made like 50 a hundred hats for motherfuckers when I was a shorty. You know what I'm saying? So I'd have took them motherfuckers apart and know everything about the thread where it goes and everything. Right. So that's off, that's off dissecting brass hats. Like you dissecting frogs in the science class. I'm taking brass hats, just ripping them up, man, taking three, four hundred dollar hats and motherfuckers bringing them to me like do my nova. Right, right, right. You know what I'm saying? So, so see, really, I'm getting these hats away right now, man. Cause we was paying three, four hundred for custom hats, man, back in the days, man. These thousand dollar hats I'm getting on, bro. When my name gets big and they gotta pay a thousand for these motherfuckers, they gonna know. But cause I'm gonna keep going, I ain't gonna stop because I can't, because I'm my clientele too says. Right. I got, man, I got, man, I got the same customers, man, from back that first week when I motherfuckers started, man. I got truth and still. And I got, you know what I'm saying? That been like what 2012 or 2009 or something, 10. I think it was about 2009, 10, somewhere now. Yeah, that was my inspiration though, man. Bryas and then Don C.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Hey, you know what something though? I mean, you talked about you um like doing my hat. I'm trying to see which one I want though, because if I got a new design, you know, for my back talk podcast. But right I see two of them, you know, so right, we talked about that. And then like when it's all with, I'm saying we're gonna do it again. What's up, Camille? How you doing? What the Eric shout out to?

SPEAKER_02

That's E. That's Eat from the Land.

SPEAKER_01

That's Edu. Yeah. What up, Edu? Hey, but yeah, though, man, I feel you on that. Like when you make it up there, and then look, you start charge, man, charge that money. Cause that's where I put a lot of podcasting. Like, I'm asking people to do come on and stuff like that. They don't want to. When I get up there, and then you want to advertise, I'm charging. You know what I'm saying? I'm charging. And it's that money.

SPEAKER_02

These high-end hats, man, it's handmade, man. And I'm a professional, man. I'm I've been doing this over it. It takes $2,000 to do something for to be a professional, man.

SPEAKER_01

Right. So, Ray, um, Eddie, tell us something about your style that you you be you know like you be using and doing.

Defining His Signature Style

SPEAKER_02

See, my style. See, my style, it it originally comes from like a mix between Braz and Darn C, and I threw my own twist and everything. Okay. You know what I'm saying? So it's basically like we've been wearing these hats since the 80s in the in the Chicago. So it's a Chicago thing, it's a tradition. Everything I'm doing, you know what I'm saying? So we before Don C, we've been wearing it. So it's like, okay, my style with the with the glitter, with the glitter detail, that came for me. I never synced it before. I made that up. I never synced it. I just made it up in my head. So anybody that's doing it, they saw me doing it. You can't go back before me saying nobody putting no glitter detail on the hats. Yeah. So I do the glitter detail like a tattoo. And I hit and I use a certain, see, everybody, everybody got the everybody got the ingredients, but they got their own ingredients. Right. And they they they they got their own recipe, but they don't have my ingredients and my sauce and my recipe. You can see it. Anybody that's using my style, when you put my hat next to theirs, it ain't handle like a knockoff. And you keep it real too. And unless I unless, unless I train them. I got one person I trained, I ain't gonna say his name unless he wants me to. Right. But it's Ice Kings. You know what I'm saying? Right. That's the only motherfucker. But other than that, they don't got the recipe, they don't got the, they don't got the ingredients, and they don't got the sauce. You know what I'm saying? But my style is like basically, you got the you got the you got the leather cord, you got the you got the genuine snakeskin, you got that next. You know what I'm saying? Okay, we're gonna talk about that next. But yeah, that's my style, though. My style is like, it's a lot of people copying and they even copy my exotic term. So I'm gonna do Eddie J exclusives. You know what I'm saying? I ain't even tripped because this is a sport, and I like that they're doing what I do because I'm Glaxi. I don't know if you got a question for me that I could explain, but I lost my fingers a few years back, you know what I'm saying? So I was out for like four years. Right. You know what I'm saying? And I had to train myself how to do this shit again. You know what I'm saying? Within this shit I'm doing. So it's like a lot of people, like, man, he ain't gonna uncomfortable. They start going hard with the shit because I wasn't doing nothing. And they and they they got the style, but I like it because this Chicago, this our this our tradition, man. And I love the competition because when you put their hat next to mine, oh god, it looked like Louis Vuitton next to motherfucking the knockoffs. You know what I'm saying? I'm telling you, academic. So I don't even care. I like it. It's better for me. You know what I'm saying? So people like they doing your thing, if they cheap clumps on me, it don't matter. It's my style. Right. But I I I I I I I I wouldn't have had no other way. Okay. I'm glad people like the, you know what I'm saying, shit good enough to go tired in their kitchen or house and do it themselves. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Because it's gonna make it bigger. Yeah. Because they might touch some people I ain't see. Right. And then when they touch them, it's like, damn. Then when they see mine, they're like, damn, I'm gonna buy some of his shit too. You know what I'm saying? That's like when they see mine, they might see theirs and be like, I'm gonna buy some of their shit too. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? And that's how it goes, you know what I'm saying? But when you put them together, I ain't gonna say nothing else, but when you put them together, pay attention to the details.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, hey, hey, and that's a fact. You know what I'm saying? That's like my look, I like my guys around me, you know what I'm saying around me. I'm saying we do the same thing. We always try and pull, you know what I'm saying, one another and like raise it up to the top. Like my son from my podcast, Playboy James, he made that for me. He seen me, called me. I got some fungy back. I appreciate it. Now look, you know him, right? Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I grew up on the help, too. Yeah, yeah. So, right, you know.

SPEAKER_01

We all know the growth. Right, right. So I'm surprised. So, right, like I say, we're crawling right now, but believe me, we're gonna be walking real soon, then running. You know what I'm saying? So, so so like going to the material that you use, I'm saying you started out saying you snake skin. Is that it?

SPEAKER_02

No, I use any anything exotic, like snakeskin, ostrich, alligator, lizard. Man, but I use mostly on the snake skin, just python, all genuine python.

SPEAKER_01

My head better be raw, man. You know what I'm saying? I want my head to be raw, stand out. You know, I'm in the boondocks. So, like when I walk, I want Eddie J to be seen. You know what I'm saying? Gotcha. I want I want to be real talk, real talk on everything. You said python, snake.

SPEAKER_02

I want social to be right too. So yeah, you know, because you be fresh, especially the fresh niggas that know how to judge, man. I don't care what you're doing. You don't know how to dress, man. Really right, man. Take it off. Yeah, oh yeah. You don't care how much money he's getting, he fresh. Let him wear.

SPEAKER_01

You

Audience, Rappers, And Staying Authentic

SPEAKER_01

too. Hey, so so like your audience, okay. Like, are you just targeting like one audience? Are you trying to be worldwide? What?

SPEAKER_02

I yeah, I'm trying to be worldwide, but my main audience is like the street niggas and the rap niggas. Yeah, that's my main audience. You know, I had Dolph on the team. Dolph is fucking with me hard, man. Yeah, young Dolph, that's the freshest rapper to ever live. I met him and I was getting him hatch like, man, he was coming to the hood in the in the on in Inglewood to see me. Okay, boy, right? Paper round up, his uncle used to set that up for me. You know what I'm saying? I mean, he told me that. I'm like, damn. Yeah, boy, Dolph was fucking with that's the freshest rapper to ever live, boy. And can't no motherfucker refute that, man. Can't no motherfucker say what? Nigga, they stamp him, all the rappers stamping him, how fresh he was, boy. He was fucking with me. So I already know what this is. I got it. Okay. Nigga, this sauce, nigga, this juice, nigga, this boy. I got it. Nigga, what was the question, man? Because I don't think about man.

SPEAKER_01

Look, that's what I want you to be. You know what I'm saying? Why be calling? That's how I want you to be. I want you to be authentic. You know what I'm saying? Be us. You know what I'm saying? We from the land. You know what I'm saying? Um, and people be telling me I should have something written down. No, I want something that's authentic. I want something that's real. You know what I'm saying? Because if we ain't real, it's fake. And then a lot of people ain't gonna believe that. That's like people out to my own horn. I got a uh a fan, her name Jen, and then she's in the Philippines. So, right, she listened to it. She's like, man, back, let's keep it authentic, let's keep it fresh. Don't sit there and pretend to be or or like fake, like it's something that it's not. And see, everything that you said is real. You've been telling me that for the long time, and I believe you. I I seen it, you know what I'm saying? So it's like I better hear that than anything that's phony and fake. You know what I'm saying? So that's how I am. You know what I'm saying? But no though, I was talking about audience, like your main audience that you're trying to reach.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the rabbers in the street nigga, man, really. Because everybody follows them anyway.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Everybody wants to be like them anyway. So once I get them, I got everybody.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I feel like I feel that. Damn, that nigga said we're down. You started bugging, you started going in. I like that, man.

SPEAKER_02

That's the freshest nigga ever put to put the rapper, start rapping, man. I feel that. Even with the freshest, boy.

SPEAKER_01

How can I say this? Because I did write down something, but because like far your designs, are you just sticking to the sports hats, or right? Are you just gonna like say, like, you know, back when we started wearing wing, they would call wing dings, and then look, they had the fossils on there. Are the only hats that you're gonna be making? Is that the style you're making now?

SPEAKER_02

Or uh see, I I I I go off a lot of my my clients sometimes. Like, they give me ideas too, and I got a lot of ideas coming up, but like I do the wing things too with the fossils, but I'd let you bring your own hat watch now. Because everybody wearing Gucci watches and everything now, all the design, the shit, whatever they want. So if you if you got a nice real watch that you want on your hat that you don't want to wear no more, you better just have it on your hat, bring me your watch, and I I do the wings, but I do the 96 wing pattern with the little wings, don't do the big wings Bri's doing now. Right. I do the wing we used to wear. Okay. I got the wing pattern from back then, the small wings with the, you know what I'm saying? You know the ones we used to rock?

Custom Timelines And VIP Orders

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh um, I I got a question offhand. So, you know, I'm coming to the land up in July. I'm gonna be at like six days. So, how long was it gonna take you to like make a hat?

SPEAKER_02

That's about the time. That's about the time, like five to six days. You know, I could rush it and it'll be a little bit more than a little bit. No, I want to see see I want you to see but I don't want to rush those because I want your shit.

SPEAKER_01

So what I'm gonna do is you told me to send you the thing, so I'm gonna send you the thing. No, see the hats like you the hat you want.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna I'ma I gotta give you like a 14 day because you want your shit custom custom. You want you ain't just getting no team hat that I could just yeah, you know what I'm saying, go over.

SPEAKER_01

So here's the thing I want here's the thing I'm saying, I won't leave with the hat. So around July 1st or either sometime in June, I should have send you everything, and then after that, I can maybe leave it like I'll leave it July 19th. I got a date share.

SPEAKER_02

Give those who give me two weeks. Oh, okay. I got two weeks. I got me two weeks. I got two weeks, and that's only for VIP people. I don't do I already do custom orders no more. Thanks, man. It's too hectic. Thanks. It's too hectic, man. I appreciate that. Uh only only certain people get custom orders. If you've been shopping, you're one of my people. Oh, thank you.

SPEAKER_01

I appreciate that. I got you. So again, the the thing that motivated you was, you know what I'm saying? Basically, uh basic thing that motivates you is was our uh upbringing, you know what I'm saying? And that they use material like that. So what are you uh looking to get uh towards the future? You know what I'm saying? Like what are your future goals?

Building A Legacy Brand

SPEAKER_02

See, my future plans for Eddie J exclusive brand is like is just like uh when uh Rolex worked in that, and that the man who founded Rolex worked in that in that in that watch shop from the time he was a little kid and he was poke, and then he came up and became the man of Rolex. That's my vision for this. This is a brand I want to live on after I'm dead. I want to leave this to my kids. Right. You know what I'm saying? This a this is a hat brand. Your last question, this go, I'm gonna I'm gonna put this with it. As far as me with my kids having it, I wanted to be uh I wanted to leave it to my kids. And what was your last question, man? You said something.

SPEAKER_01

Uh uh far, hold on, let me see. Target audience, it wasn't that, you know what I'm saying? But it'll probably like the bigger challenges in the industry, it's future goals. Can I say everything else?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I I I lost my train of thought, but my future goals is this. It's like I'm building a brand. I'm building a brand. So I'm building a brand that I want to be a high-end brand. Right. Yeah, exactly. This what I this is what I was about to say about the last question. What if Chrome? The other designs. My other desires, it go with this question. Right. Remember, you said what other designs am I gonna use? Right. So this is my future outlook on it. It's gonna be a lot of other designs. I got women's designs coming up, I got women's hats I wanna do, but it's all about the hats because hats, it's just like shoes. You know what I'm saying? If your head gotta be, you know what I'm saying? Right. Right. You know what I'm saying? If you come out with you, your shoes gotta be straight, your hat gotta be cool.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Especially if you're a hat person, it's a lot of hat people, so. Are you right, T. My brand is about hats. You know what I'm saying? Anything else I do, it's gonna be extra, like a jacket or something. I might come out with an exclusive jacket with the snakeskin sleeves and all that. You know what I'm saying? But my brand, I want it to be a hat brand, and I want it to be last forever. Just like they got their bag brands, and they like my Louis Vuitton got bags.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

He had other shit, but them bags is what's selling. Exactly. My I I learned how to make my hats too off of making bags too, because I I watched all the videos on how to make handbags. So I can make handbags, but I don't make them. I use I use the skill to make my hat to my straps. That's what I got. Straps is number one. Ain't nobody straps fucking with mine. They're gonna my hat, you can have your hat for three, four years now. Your straps still gonna look sturdy. Your straps still gonna look great, man.

SPEAKER_01

Like, hey, I got one, I got one in the room that I'm for the putting the shop. I found the hat shop.

SPEAKER_02

I'm the shop too. You can send it to me to fix it up. I I'm I'm I'm restoring them too. I got I I'll I bring them back to life and I sit them back up.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Well, text me the uh, what I'm saying, you're added and then you'll get it.

SPEAKER_02

The strap will never curl up. Like these other niggas when I be watching niggas with their hats on strap curled up, this stuff ain't gonna curl up. That muffle, hey that muffle showing us straight too. I use, I use, I use all see this, this the this the and I'm doing the hand painting it now. Ain't nobody hand painting their python like me, but this lizard right here, this genuine lizard, this costs more than a python, man. That's why this hat's gonna say it to somebody give me 254. It's really a it's really a $500 hat, man. I'm giving the hats away, man. This is genuine lizards. You can go buy a pair of lizard shoes and see how much it's gonna cost you.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, I got a question to ask you. I got a question to ask you. I'm not no poor fan though, man.

SPEAKER_02

I'm hand painting the python now, professionally hand painting them. I've been doing it for over 10,000 hours till I got it right, and I'm putting it on the hatch now. Okay. I've been playing this game for years. I just got it right though.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. So can you do any team, like you know, like any team like that?

SPEAKER_02

Any team. Yeah, so so every team.

SPEAKER_01

Now you know I'm a package fan.

SPEAKER_02

You know a package fan. So yeah, yeah, I'm a I did I did key glock a pack green bay packers have with the G on it for the Glock. Key Glock. Oh yeah. I did I did key Glock one. Hey, I don't know that I don't be trying to I don't take pictures with motherfuckers on brackets. I'm a I feel like I'm a celebrity. You know, we from the 80s, we bougie. I don't give a fuck. Yeah. I see I just seen plenty of so I just seen G her growing motherfucking lids, boy. Him and the boy 808. Oh yeah, okay. I ain't take no everybody take a picture with them. I sold them my hats, boy. They was like them motherfuckers. Well, I had a conversation with them. That's all about that bitch. It's a nigga named uh from Navyhood make these hats. He say my shit raw than that, boy. Nigga Buck 50 brand. He raw though, he's decent. He decent though, but he can't fuck with me.

SPEAKER_01

He can't fuck okay, okay. Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_02

So um nice though. He says he got a nice color scheme, too.

SPEAKER_01

But it's I was like, so um okay, so already we talked about I need a green bay hat. I be liking your shit. I'd be like, man, I'm just not no motherfucking bass fan or a cover fan. I'm a low-end nigga. We lower nigga. I'm I'm a White Sox fan. You know what I'm saying? I'm socks. I got the uh the bulls hat I got from you. I had to put it up because I felt bad when it because I don't support them, you know what I'm saying? But it is what it is, though. But I say I gotta get you to make me a couple of hats though at the same time. So, how you market your brand though, your hats and everything?

Marketing Through Social Media

SPEAKER_02

Man, I'm strictly social media, man. Cause I got other stuff I'm doing. I got custody of my kids, I got a lot of shit going on. So I do a website, but I don't want no type of you know shit with that shit. So I just try to right now I'm just doing my strictly my social media because it's big right now. Social media is the biggest thing out here, man. I get I can get a trillion motherfuckers off social media.

SPEAKER_01

My what's the name? And and and then real talk, it ain't from the land, it's from other motherfuckers.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly, man.

SPEAKER_01

They're gonna see you the best, man. They're gonna give you all your money, they're gonna beg. And then they like the thing that you do, you know what I'm saying? And and then I had to learn all content, good content, but some content that be that way be good for you because it like attracts our uh our following. Like our plug, I'll put up on there. You see the numbers that they did overnight?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, I see that.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like, damn, TikTok the best, man.

SPEAKER_02

SPEAKER_01

I've been sharing y'all stuff too. I shared your stuff, I shared my boy James stuff, and I was sending my T stuff, you know what I'm saying? And uh, I think that was Limo. But whoever was trying to do something, and and now I got this platform, I'm trying to help them. And you, my man, so you know I gotta get you a hundred grand, you know what I'm saying? So I'm trying to push you, you know what I'm saying, like real. I'm like, and then I'm feeling your uh the village you be doing and everything. I'm like, I see my boy doing this stuff. That's why ask you that marketing question because I got a little insight on that that I had to learn. But since you wanna do it like that, I got your back though. But no, though, that's like me, you know. First of all, this podcast, it is a dialogue, not a monologue. So if you want to ask me any questions, you can. I'm gonna ask them. It is what it is, though, you know. Yeah, but but yeah, though, you know what I'm saying? I really appreciate you being on here, you know, like for real. And I suppose Vin did it like a month ago. You know what I'm saying? We know how we get busy doing other things, like taking care of business.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you like family, right? You know, we like family. We've been going to the oldness 40 years, yeah. You've been on shorty, name why I jumped off the court. You saw me jump off the court, and I've been good there since this ain't none, this real, real thing.

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_02

You know, I think it's like the third week of August.

SPEAKER_01

Third week of August, okay.

SPEAKER_02

I'll try to make that because I don't call the picnic win the reunion, man.

SPEAKER_01

I be missing anything, man. Oh, wow, man. So so so right besides that. So besides that, what have you been on up there though?

Fatherhood And Everyday Discipline

SPEAKER_01

Just join. Just falling back.

SPEAKER_02

Just uh take care of my kids, man. I got Chris and my daughters. My boy just graduated, so I'm congratulations right now. Go on through anything. Thanks, man. She graduated from uh high school and so I think you're gonna be a good one. I'm a single father, man. Yeah, yeah, I'm a single father, man.

SPEAKER_01

So hey, you know what something though about that? A lot of women take that for granted. You know what I'm saying? They think it's hey, hey, it's time for a takeover. You know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, man. I see my granny do it, man. So I I know I I couldn't, I couldn't people like, man, you you took it on a lot, man, but it ain't nothing. I see my old as hell. She had like five, six eyes, badass. Motherfucker, you think she couldn't do it if she was 60 years old, if she was a woman, how the fuck I can't do it and I'm more fucking, you know what I'm saying? Yeah. Still in my 40s. Mm-hmm. Come on. Shit ain't nothing.

SPEAKER_01

So right, right. You ain't so right, you in Inglewood?

SPEAKER_02

No, I'm on, I'm I'm in Brunsville. Oh, you brings it. Oh, you're both. Yeah, I'm in Brunswick. Oh, yeah, and yeah, I'm I'm in a nice, a nice spot. Okay, okay. Around Okay, yeah. Try to think, you know. You know where I'm finna I'm finna give you a picture. You you know where we used to shop at? Uh-huh. 47. Uh-huh. I'm right around that area. Okay, bet. I'll be right back. Right around the corner. So I'm right around the corner from that. So all the stores for you know I was in JB's before too. Right. You know, uh, no, I'll be. Oh, you were yeah, I was in JB's for a little minute before I fucked up my hand, yeah. Okay. I was in JB's. I was in JB's before I fucked up my hand. I had D-Rolls for the coming of that bitch. I was making a D-Roll since I had made some shit for D Rolls, Shorty. Uh-huh. They they was like, you know, really. They knew D-Rolls like the joints, because the dude who got me in there, handy, you know, he was like a fashion music, man. So my eyes low. Yeah, no. They like the hat, so I was even about the man. I ain't gonna need to lie, I was talking to I was talking to the people from Robin Jean, man, at one point, man. Mm-hmm. No, I just, you know, I wasn't ready for that type of shit. Okay. I wanna I wanna be a new guy.

SPEAKER_01

That's like

Ownership, Investment, And Long Game

SPEAKER_01

this. That's like this.

SPEAKER_02

You gotta wait till you're ready, man. You gotta catch the jump off into shit, people would fuck over.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then I've been I've been really lectured about that because I try to run at first. I gotta crawl, you know what I'm saying? Like you just said, jump out that porch ain't cool. Come up or get you. Take anything, you sign paperwork and all that. But and then and then once this uh start progressing, they'll get the money, and I won't. You know, that's why everything I'm doing is coming out of my pocket. You know what I'm saying? I got my own brand that I'm doing t-shirts. You know what I'm saying? I pay this my podcast, I got my L C. You know what I'm saying? I got my license, I own this here. Ain't no, ain't nobody gonna get no parts of anything. So I just and by me wanting to have people to sign me or do this and do that, they like, man, back fall back. You're doing too much. You know what I'm saying? Look, you do it like this here, you do it like that there, and then look, you don't start in your profit. Stride crawling before, you know what I'm saying? You're trying to run.

SPEAKER_02

And depending that's the best way on paying a style in the club. And and you got a club. And and when I first did this shit back, the first day I told you that week I made that 2500, man, I started off with three, four hundred dollars, man. Yeah. I turned that shit to like uh 10 bands so quick. Right. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_01

I I feel that, yeah. And and and then, and then honestly, because I'm like, sometimes you get tired, you know what I'm saying? I'm like, it ain't what you do, it's how you do it. You know what I'm saying? So right, I decided to give myself a date to really start because I want to start doing YouTube podcasting. You know what I'm saying? So right, once I start doing YouTube podcasting, it'd be all fine. Because it's cool to do it like this here. And right now, even though I'm on Apple, Spotify, and like eight other podcast sites, I want to really get into YouTube. You know what I'm saying? And and and that's when the audience is like really broad. Like right now, I might have people in Europe, Asia, and over there, even I I think that was Russia, shit like that. I think Russia. I think like 13 countries. But I'm trying to reach everybody at the same time and lead it to and write this to my family. Like my niece and nephew and my kids, you know, to where they can expand. You know, I want to get off the ground and then like once it gets to progress and bring them in. Like right now, I'm trying to find me a cohost. I'm paying. You know what I'm saying? I've been out, you know what I'm saying? I'm not putting my application out online because that they'll bring anybody. I don't want anybody. I want somebody to know about everything in life, like being knowledgeable. Who can have a decent conversation far like being in streets, you know what I'm saying? Professionally, education, politics, and all that. Come in the boondocks. Right. And the boondocks a motherfucker. It's totally different from what me and you used to coming up as.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they gotta come out, they gotta be out there though. No, no, uh, it's oh, but like how we doing it right here. So yeah, you gotta see.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah, you gotta say, I've been it. I've been spending um I mean, I'm I'm sorry, Eddie J. I've been spending money on this shit here. Like real, I've spent real money. And and and then they think I'm playing games. No, man, I'm taking this seriously because I'm investing. I want to leave something for my family. You know what I'm saying? I'm gonna leave something for my kids. You know what I'm saying? It's just not what I'm saying. I'm not worried about it. You know what I'm saying? Even though I'm up in age, some years left, I wanna leave something for they can be able to grow for them, their kids, they kid, and then look, and then look, this can be their job. I'm like you, I'm my boss. You know what I'm saying? I'm my boss. Can nobody fire you? Can nobody fire me? You know what I'm saying? So it go back to what anyways you do is how you do it. It's all of them, you feel me?

SPEAKER_02

And and then the different relationships you build with people through the through doing this, man. Like you said, it ain't gonna be the motherfuckers that you've been knowing, it be the motherfuckers you just met. Yeah, so I got a I got a good relationship with grandstand too, man. That's what I'm thinking about going with. The for the grandstand, yeah, they fuck with me. Yeah, hell yeah. Fuck grandstand, man. Shout out grandstand. They fuck with me, boy. I ain't no lady. When I can when I came in that motherfucker and I showed them the the owner, my hand got fucked up. Right, she gave me some free hats. What's up, Jude? Yeah, she gave me some free hats, and her son, them they love me, bro. And they I was about to, I'm that's who I might. I'm saying that to say that's gonna be my first place to do business five with my hats, because my shit had in grandstand, you know, grandstand of business. Yeah, it is. They always been in business on 35th Street.

SPEAKER_01

Are you still on 35th Street? Yeah, they still right there. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay.

SPEAKER_02

I and my and from what they was telling me, you know, they used to be in Zoo Town. I ain't know that, but they was a different name. They was a different name, different name. Okay, I think that's a thing like that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Juttown was a spot, yeah. But no, though, man, I mean, I swear to God, man, I'm so proud of you, man. On everything I love, cause you're striving, you struggling, and then plus you progressing. You know what I'm saying? And then can nobody tell you how to do shit? Plus, like you your own boss. That makes a big difference.

SPEAKER_02

I rented my shit, and I'm gonna keep going. I ain't gonna stop. And then shit. I got the I got the I got the clients, man. They fucking with me, they gonna keep me straight because they're gonna always tell me to do something. And then anything I post, people be fighting over. I gotta put some of them up. Like, damn, don't sell that hat, don't sell my hat.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, I didn't want to join that crowd, man, because one day I'm laid back, right? I'm lit. I'm in the crib chilling, right? I'm on, I don't know what I matter of fact, it probably Instagram. I'm like, that buffer raw. I don't know if the white one, I'll finish, and it wasn't no cubs. I think it was the bulls hat or something like that. I'm like, that go perfectly with my boy jersey. You know what I'm saying? It went perfect with it. And I said, let me hit you on home. I'm saying, your shit go fast, I bet. So I'm like, man, let me. I'm I said, I gotta call you. You know what I'm saying? But you be up some raw ass, some raw ass.

SPEAKER_02

And another, and another thing I'm working on, you asked me what I was working on too. I was I'm I'm um learning the AI.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you good in that. I don't want you working, you good in that. You good in that. I brag on that to my people, to my boys, amazing, he raped and shot by Rob. He's a picture man. I mean, I I be sure I'm like, man, you raw on this here, you know? You wrong.

SPEAKER_02

Because I want to do the AI videos and stuff, man. AI advertising for people, man. I'm about to start doing that too. Like, right. So, uh, because people, it really everything comes organically with me. I I I I found out what I'm good at and I and I and I capitalize off of it. I don't really trying to do that. It's just like, I was just fucking around with that shit. Right. And then people just start inboxing me, man. What you wanna do, man? You want to give me, you know what I'm saying? When they see me, like, how you, you know what I'm saying? Come to you. I'm like, first I'm like, no, I'm just playing around. Then I start already saying, like, damn, that people really don't not into this. They can't do it like this. So start doing the shit, you know what I'm saying? I'm I'm gonna come with the prices on show ties for people with the AI and all that.

SPEAKER_01

So, so, so let's say for yes, okay, I'm throw this out here.

Wholesale Bundles And Pricing Logic

SPEAKER_01

Say if it's like you got a client, and right, they want more than just one hat. Can you give them like a uh a bundle?

SPEAKER_02

Uh oh yeah, I start at 10. If you want a wholesale deal, we can start. If you want 10 hats, you can start start at 10. Yeah, 10. Okay. It gotta be 10, 5, it gotta be 10. Okay, better. You gotta you gotta come with the majority of the money so I can get all the material. Um, it's the price.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, half a front.

SPEAKER_02

It's gonna be more than half, it's gonna be more than half because I'm gonna knock something off for you. So if I take you 1500, you gotta bring a G. Okay. You know what I'm saying? It depends on what you want done to the hats. It might not be that much. If you just want scan, I got a price for that. If you just want scan glitter, I got a price for that. You want scan glitter that stones, I got a price for that. Oh, okay. So people have to just get up with me and show me the detail of the hats that they want to do. Because it's handmade. Okay. Everything's handmade, so everything be different. People like, why you can't have a set price? Because you might have something little on the head, and I might not charge you that much. You should be happy and I got a set price. Right. See, your shit might be less. You got some little shit on that, but you got all that big shit, and I gotta say all day because it's handmade. I'm not gonna say it for 14 hours, and you're gonna give me fucking 150.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no, no. I'm glad you said that because right, I'm glad you said that. Because uh different hats do call different, I'm new, like a different price range.

SPEAKER_02

Even back then, they called them buck fifty. What were we paying for them hats? Back man, 300, 225, and three and a quarter, and then all types of different prices for the call them wingdings, they call them wingdings, you know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, going to bride in due time. Them off, hey, them off was a they're the bank roll. And then that was like a I almost said whole day hustle, but you know what I'm saying? That was a nice hustle. Jack all that, go out, go, and then back next day and get it back though. But them have there, I mean, I mean, and see, I'm not trying to change the uh the style out here or or either like the swag out here, but with that, a lot of motherfuckers will stand out. You know what I'm saying? It ain't that many of us out here, like the black folks. That's why I stand out out here, cuz right, I got my Chicago swag. You know what I'm saying? It ain't what you do, it's how you do it. And then plus it ain't what you wear, it's how you wear. You know, I don't creep up every day. I creep up on a Friday, Saturday, I have my work clothes on. And then I be promoting my vent, I be um promoting my my brand. I'm not buying all these other stores anymore. I got I got places that make my clothes, you know what I'm saying? And that's coming out. I got a clothing brand coming out at the same time though, you know. So it's just like the things that you make, I can see myself promoting it, sharing it, whatever it is. I got guys that want them, you know, so that won't be a problem. You know? That's good. That's good there. So you've been you making hash, you say well over what, 20 years, right? What I mean it's over 20 years.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna say what 30 some years, 30 years. 30 something years. 30, 31, 32 years. I got to go. I started, but I ain't ha I haven't been doing it the whole time, but I started 31 years ago. I started, that's when I learned. Okay, that's when I learned. You know what I'm saying? How to do the snakes can and all that. But then once I I stopped for a while, and I since now that I've been doing it, I'm gonna say it's been like 15, 16 years. Okay. Like now, since I've been making these hats, like doing this brand, like now, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, that's gonna explain. So I don't okay, you have to get in the background. I don't uh something that you just did.

SPEAKER_02

These like has I got just a few ores and a few pink well, no, all these right here. I got my orders put up. So um all these ready for sale. Okay, except for this one in somebody here. Okay, but yeah, these all these for sale now. Somebody just bought this one. Now somebody I just ain't getting to them over yet.

SPEAKER_01

Now, do me a favorite, look, I'm correct. I'm gonna send it. I'm gonna post this on YouTube too.

Live Hat Showcase And Materials

SPEAKER_01

So can you show your hats off to them, like like put it in front of your camera? So like let's see it again.

SPEAKER_02

With the hats on the hats? Yeah. Okay, let me see that one. With the gold buffer, all of them got the gold plate and buckle that don't turn this, don't fade, none of that. Just stay, it's gonna stay like this. Everything got the everything got the the back of the strap gonna match your hand. It ain't gonna be no mismatch leather that the motherfucker just found and put it's gonna be the orange. You got the orange in this, it's gonna be orange in that. The back, everything's gonna be color coordinated. See this open with the white skin. Oh, that's old school. Got the yellow, we got the yellow on the back of the strap. Everything color coordinated, man. Everything neat, everything professional, man. All that you see, glue spots and everything hanging off of it, no, everything curling up. I got the I got the real authentic, every hat authentic, authentic new era hats. Yeah, I don't use no fake hats, I don't use no knockoff hats, none of that. I use all authentic hats from New Arab or mentor nuts. That motherfucker wrong hat. I like that one. See, this one got the stones on it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I like that one. And then is that Python or what is Python lizard?

SPEAKER_02

This lizard right here. This lizard, it's this genuine lizard, man.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, and then and then a head like that costs how much?

SPEAKER_02

This one like three 300, but I'm I'm doing 250 for this one. Okay. The lizard costs a little more than python, so and I put the stones on here too. So if this had Python on it, it's still 200.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's raw. I like that. I like them. See, I got a like a certain color there. I be trying to uh the quarterback joints.

SPEAKER_02

You got a lot of bullshits, man. Yeah, Chicago. I do mostly Chicago tanks for sale, man. So I'm gonna see.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I figure. I also got these little blue baseball joints, too. Yeah. And then also, right, you said you do your and then you do your own painting, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I paint, I I hand paint, I hand paint the python.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Put the glaze over it, you know what I'm saying? Right. Do all that. All that's me and my me, so your hat's gonna be one of a kind, man. You ain't finna see nobody with this hat on, man. Okay. Because I hand painted this. If they if they go, if they gotta look at every piece I do, and it ain't gonna be this, because it ain't gonna be the same. This is the every hat different anyway, because the every piece of snake skin is different. Oh, yeah. Gotta get some pattern on. That's why I use Pike. Okay. You're gonna get the same pattern from no other snake or other, no even another part of the snake. So your hat is gonna always be one of the kind.

SPEAKER_01

What's that, the Baltimore or the Cleveland? Well, uh no, no, no, I'll take that back. That's a bad hat, ain't it?

SPEAKER_02

Oh no, that's a that's a clue. The clue. This this is my satin collection, man. I just saw I just got and then you stitched that. What you mean?

SPEAKER_01

Far as like the uh the side right there. No, turn it around. Like turn, other side. Okay, what's that say right there?

SPEAKER_02

No, this this this was exclusive head. This is a this is a World Series head. These are this is my Saturn World Series uh collection, man. Okay, bet. So we got they all got the years that they won the championship on the side of. Okay. You know what I'm saying? And the World Series. So, and all of them satin. So you got the New York Yankees won so many times, they couldn't do this. It just said 27, it just say 27 times on that motherfucker. Right. I so I sold it though. So I sold I sold the Yankees. See, like Boston. See the Boston, they got a few hundred. I rocked that. Yeah, see the Boston. Red socks on it. I put the and this is this exclusive too. I put that patch on there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Sometimes I put the patches on there. So my hat to be exclusive, man. They be you're gonna always have a wonderful can of hand fight with me. Ain't nobody gonna never have your hat on. Okay. They might have it how I looked at when it before I start putting everything on it. Okay. So like this. Like, see, they won. They only won three times. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And that's 2000, right? That's a 2000. Who was that? The Baltimore Ravens?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, this is the Oreos. Okay, right. Yeah, this this all too. This all though.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, okay. I guess I just gotta go take it to him. That moment. Hey, I like them.

SPEAKER_02

So uh I do dad hats too. I do the ones with the net on, whatever. Any hat, man. Any hat made like this, I can do it, man. Any hat with a logo on the ball.

SPEAKER_01

You know, like the you know the one with the net on there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. They the same, you know, whatever. No, because they be the same. This is like a $30 hat, $34, but it has $40 now. Yeah, that's a four-dollar hat there. That's like $40. Before I even do anything to this hat, it cost me $40. Yeah, it's $40. I know. Yeah, so it's like all of them the same price, or it's all of them the same, really. Like this is a $150 right here. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm a that's that's like Mike Yankees, man. You know what I'm saying? I I'm not no Boston Red Sox fan, but I'll rock that Boston hat because that motherfucker raw. Especially that fabric.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The side collection of it's going, they they light, they ain't really heavy, so they ain't hot. They ain't really hot and sweaty. Yeah, and I try to I try to get the thin snake scan, man, so it won't be too heavy and hot, like for the when it's like the winter time, it's cool. I get sometimes a little thick, but I try to keep them thin though. The thin, so you know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_01

That's a lick right there.

SPEAKER_02

So it's gonna look like it came on there.

SPEAKER_01

You
