Guard Your Ears Before Your Eyes

Ever wonder why the temptation wins even when you swore it wouldn't? You had your mind made up. You knew what you believed. And then the moment came, and it didn't matter.

Christian Calatayud opens Proverbs 5 and points to something most men never notice: Solomon doesn't start this chapter with a warning. He starts with an instruction. Pay attention. Listen well. Before he tells his son what to run from, he tells him what to run to. Because the fight against temptation isn't won in the moment of testing. It's won in what you've been feeding your attention for weeks before it.

Willpower shows up too late. The compromise doesn’t start when you give in. It starts with what you let your eyes linger on, what you let your mind entertain, and what you quietly stop guarding. Discretion doesn't fall on you. Verse 2 says maintain it. That's active. That's a discipline built in the ordinary hours long before the test arrives.

Gentlemen, every day is a battle. A battle for your faith, your family, and your purpose. The men who stand strong don't prepare when the battle arrives. They prepare before it begins. Welcome to the Men's Morning Devotional. Let's get into God's word. It's time to man up.

Good morning, gentlemen. My name is Christian Kaladiud, and it's time for another man up moment. This week we're in Proverbs chapter 5, and today's devotional is called Guard Your Ears Before You Guard Your Eyes. Today's scripture verse is Proverbs 5, 1 and 2 that says, My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion, and your lips may preserve knowledge. Now, this is all about, Proverbs is all about a father writing to his son. And we see that that father is King Solomon. And King Solomon doesn't open this chapter with a warning. Instead, he opens it with an instruction. Pay attention, listen well. Before he tells his son what to run from, he tells him what to run to. To run to wisdom, insight, and discretion. And gentlemen, that order, that order matters. Most men try to fight temptation with willpower alone. They wait until the moment of the testing to figure out what they believe. But King Solomon says that the fight is won long before that moment. That the fight is won in what you've been paying attention to. And guys, the men before us, the men whose shoulders we stand on, they understood this. Long before self-help ever existed. The fathers of our faith, they taught that a man's soul is shaped by what he feeds it. His eyes, his ears, his attention, long before any single decision is made. Watch what feeds your attention, and you'll already know how the test will go. Guys, Proverbs isn't a religious book, it's a life book. It doesn't just tell you what to believe on Sunday, it tells you how to walk on Tuesday. And that's exactly what is happening here. King Solomon isn't preaching a sermon, he's training a son for the real world. And gentlemen, as we all know well, a real world has real temptation in it. And discretion doesn't fall on you. Verse 2 says, maintain it. It's active, it's a discipline. And here's the truth: most men don't want to hear. The compromise didn't start in the moment you gave in. It started weeks earlier. And what you let your eyes linger on. On what you let your mind entertain. And on what you stopped guarding. A man who waits until the temptation is in front of him to decide what he believes has already lost. So here's our man up challenge. Before this day ends, we gotta identify one thing we've been letting feed our attention that has no business shaping our heart. A show, a scroll, a conversation, a social media platform, a look you keep taking a second time. We need to cut it off today. Not tomorrow, today. And let's replace it with five minutes in his word. Because discretion, it's not found in the moment of temptation. It's built in the days before. Let's pray. Father, thank you for your wisdom that goes before every temptation we will ever face. Forgive us for the ways that we have let our attention wander to things that weaken us instead of strengthen us. Lord, give us discretion. Not just in the moment of testing, but in the quiet, ordinary hours before it. Lord Jesus, guard my ears, guard my eyes, and guard my heart. In your name and in your blood we pray. Amen.
