The Sweetness That Kills

What if the most dangerous thing in your life right now doesn't look dangerous at all? What if it looks like relief?

Christian dives deeper into Proverbs 5 and confronts a warning most men never see coming. Solomon doesn't describe sin as ugly. He describes it as sweet. Honey. Smooth oil. It shows up in exactly the season you're tired, underappreciated, or bored, saying exactly what you want to hear. That's the trap. Sin never announces itself with a warning label. It announces itself with honey. And every man who's ever wrecked his marriage, his ministry, or his name didn't sign up for the sword. He signed up for the sweetness and got the sword anyway.

Solomon says "in the end," not "in the beginning." Sin's whole strategy depends on you never getting to the end. It needs you to decide at the honey stage. And this pattern goes far beyond sexual sin. It shows up in how you handle money, anger, ambition, and escape. Anything that offers relief now and asks you to ignore the ending later. Wisdom is learning to taste the ending before you take the bite. And for married men, your covenant isn't just a blessing. It's a guardrail God built before you ever needed one.

Think of one thing in your life that feels sweet in the moment but you already know ends badly. Name it honestly today, out loud. Don't minimize it. Then take one real step away from it before the day is out. Call a brother. Delete it. Open your Word. Walk out of that room. Taste the ending before you take another bite.

Gentlemen, every day is a battle. A battle for your faith, your family, and your purpose. The men who stand strong don't prepare when the battle arrives. They prepare before it begins. Welcome to the men's morning devotional. Let's get into God's word. It's time to man up.

Good morning, gentlemen. My name is Christian Kaladiude here with your man up moment. And today we're still in Proverbs chapter 5, and today's devotional is called The Sweetness That Kills. Proverbs 5, 3 through 4 says, For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil. But in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. You see, King Solomon doesn't describe sin as ugly here. Instead, he describes it as sweet. Honey. Smooth oil. And the truth is that's not the warning most of us expect. We think temptation looks like danger. It doesn't. It looks like relief. It looks like exactly what you want to hear in a season when you're tired, underappreciated, or bored. You see, that's the trap. You see, gentlemen, that's the trap. Sin never announces itself with a warning label. It announces itself with honey. And you see, many of the men before us have wrestled with this same picture. And for those of us that are married, it's important to know that the marital covenant that we have was given to us as a protection. It was given to men like us as a protection. So we wouldn't fall into the snare of a stranger's sweetness. You see, our mistake is to look at marriage as a blessing. It isn't just a blessing, it is a guardrail God built for you before you ever needed one. And I want you to notice something else. Solomon says, in the end, not in the beginning. You see, sin's whole strategy depends on you never getting to the end. It needs you to decide at the honey stage, not at the goal stage. Every man who's ever wrecked his marriage, his ministry, his name, he didn't sign up for goal. He didn't sign up for bitter. He signed up for honey. And the truth is, none of us chase a double-edged sword. We try to chase the sweetness, and we get the sword anyway. So this is why Solomon isn't primarily warning young men about a woman. He's warning them about a pattern. Anything that offers relief now and asks you to ignore the ending later. And that pattern shows up in more than sexual sin. It shows up in how we men handle money, anger, ambition, and escape. Wisdom, it means learning to taste the ending before we take the bite. So here's our man up challenge. Think of one thing in your life now that feels sweet in the moment, but you already know how it ends badly. Name it honestly today. Out loud. Don't minimize it. Then let's take one real step away from it before the day is out. Call a brother. Delete it. Open your word. Walk out of that room. Taste the ending before you take another bite. Let's pray. Father, we thank you. We thank you for warning us before we need rescuing. For forgiving us for the times that we've chased what tasted sweet and ignored where it was leading. Lord Jesus, give us the discipline to see past the honey and to the ending that you already see. Lord, build in us a marriage, a mind, and a mouth that reflects your faithfulness. We love you, we praise you, and we thank you. Lord Jesus, we ask all these things in your name and in your blood. Amen.
