Did it get robbed for best picture?  Is this a great film or merely a good one. We discuss.

SPEAKER_00

And we are live. Uh, this is uh Johnny Cardinelli and my co-host, Chris Weivel.

SPEAKER_02

How's it going, brother?

SPEAKER_00

Good, how are you? This is a Century and Movies podcast, and uh I'm recording live from uh West Hollywood. Chris, you are in are you in technically in Charlotte or suburb?

SPEAKER_02

Uh Charlotte City Limits, but it's definitely a suburb.

SPEAKER_00

It is okay, but you are in Charlotte City Limits, okay. Uh, so you're kind of in the south. This movie is from the south, yeah, uh, to some degree. We are talking about walk the we like to get right into it. We don't do a lot of kibbitzing, you know. We should probably should get some music at the beginning. Although I do want to do my I do want to do my two Johnny Cash impressions. This is not actually Johnny Cash. This is Joaquin Phoenix doing Johnny Cash early and then later. Hi, I'm Johnny Cash. Later, I I'm Johnny Cash. Notice the difference. Yeah, I noticed it in the movie. Ah, it was great. So this is I this is Walk the Line, 19 or 2005. I was wondering why isn't why isn't it called I Walk the Line, which is the name of the song, and turns out there was a 1970 movie, uh, with um nothing to do with the the with this with um Johnny Cash, but uh called I Walk the Line. Johnny Cash actually did the soundtrack to that movie, but that's why this one's called Walk the Line.

SPEAKER_02

Interesting. Okay, I didn't I yeah, I didn't see that.

SPEAKER_00

Which actually, for some odd reason, I think it's even better. Walk the line. I don't know, it's something about that more than I walk the line. Like, just I don't know. I like Walk the Line, I just think it's a great title.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I do too.

SPEAKER_00

Better than I walk the line, even. Um I don't know. I can't really quantify why, but I I love this title. Yeah, um, so this was your call. Yeah, this was your choice of movie, and so give me a reason. Any particular reason why?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I forget. It was something in the last podcast. We were talking about how um Joaquin did not win Best Actor, he lost to um Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote, and just something, and then I realized, oh my god, I haven't seen this movie in forever. I absolutely loved it when it first came out in the theater. It's been I don't want to say 20 years, at least 15 since I've seen it. So I figured uh let's let's give it a rewatch. And uh always been a huge Johnny Cash fan, too.

SPEAKER_00

So that was gonna be my next question. It's funny. The the reason I think we brought up Capote is because our last movie was Murder by Death, and Truman Capote. Uh, I think his only real quote unquote actual acting appearance was in that movie. Um, and that's how we got probably talking about how he won the Oscar. Dude, have you seen the movie Capote?

SPEAKER_02

Uh I saw it when it came out, yes.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you did?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, yeah, so I don't remember it.

SPEAKER_00

I have not, but I'm going to have to watch it because there ain't no way Joaquin Phoenix should not have won the Oscar for this. I'm sorry. I don't care how good Capote, and I've heard he was awesome in that movie, by the way. I mean it's Phillips C Moore Hoffman. He's he's he's awesome, everything he does, but gosh, damn, I could not believe when when I found out that he that Joaquin did not win the Oscar. I thought for all this time that he won it for this one. I forgot it was The Joker, which I'm not gonna lie, I was not a fan of, to be honest with you.

SPEAKER_02

Um doesn't seem like your kind of movie.

SPEAKER_00

That's yeah, no, you know, I the funny thing is I I am a huge, I was a huge comic book guy. I collected like I had probably thousands of comics, and I used to read them too. Uh, but I used to go to conventions, but I was strictly Marvel. I never I'd never liked the DC comics. I you know, I thought they were a little too simplistic, uh, and uh just whatever the case may be. And uh, you know, I liked the early Batmans when they were kind of corny and silly, you know, Jack Nicholson. And I'm not saying I didn't like the Dark Knight, but I I just I I prefer the Marvel comics. And I, you know, I saw the Joker and I mean, or Joker, I can't remember if it's Joker or The Joker. I just thought it was another one of those exercises to overact and go berserk, and uh it just didn't work for me. But but I'm kind of crazy. Like I didn't like, let's say uh Gangs of New York with Daniel Day Lewis. I didn't like him in that movie. I thought it was just just an exercise to overact. So sometimes I'm just if somebody doesn't hit me, there's nothing I can do about it. You know, I mean, from from moment one, I don't buy it, and I'm not gonna buy it. And that's just kind of how it was with both those movies. This my god, walking um incredible. Yeah, uh, it's funny. I might that was gonna be my question. You were a Johnny Cash fan then. Uh as somebody who's a a big punk rocker guy like you, you know, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So my dad, we had like anytime we took a family trip with it, we listened to three things Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, and then it was some weird like Irish folk songy really well, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know, okay. That's interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't know what the hell it was. Thank god I hated it. Um, and uh so I just always I just kind of grew up listening to Johnny Cash and I always loved it. And uh we'll probably talk about it, but uh some of his later stuff. Um, I thought his later stuff also was uh incredible, which wasn't covered in the movie, but um just been a been a huge fan.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, that's interesting because you know, as a guitar player and an acoustic guy, I I never was. It's not that I didn't like him, but I my dad never played Johnny Cash. He wasn't he wasn't that wasn't his thing. Uh Beatles, Ray Charles, uh Dean Martin. Dean Martin actually, even more than Frank Sinatra. Those are the guys my dad uh liked to play. Eagles, you know, but but I didn't grow up with crack. I knew a couple, the water, you know, the queue, the big hits, and that's it. Yeah, and that's that's what kind of I'm going with. And I generally don't like biopics much, or which for reasons we can talk about. Uh, but I I'm thinking I saw this when it came out, I'm like, and I'm like, why did I see this? Why would I go see that? And I by the way, I fucking loved it, but I'm like, why would I go see I you know, I I'm much more of a Ray, I was much more of a Ray Charles guy, and I still haven't seen Ray, which somehow just missed my thing. I'm definitely going to now, but I just I wasn't a big fan of Biopics. I I'm trying to think if I went and saw this because I liked Joaquin Phoenix so much in um Gladiator.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, probably. Um, and you know, I remember this. I was looking forward to this movie for a really long time.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_02

Trailers. I mean, I was there, I don't know that it was opening day, but it was it was within the first week, I'm sure.

SPEAKER_00

Um we come in from completely different perspectives then.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, exactly. And um, always been a big Joaquin fan. Um, you'll remember from um our the classic U-turn, uh his old mat. Um yeah, so I've just I've always been a fan and I love Johnny Cash, and it was like, oh my god, this movie's gonna be incredible. So yeah, I was I was pretty pretty fired up about it when it came out. It's funny.

SPEAKER_00

I read uh that initially they wanted um um Russell Crowe to be Johnny Cash. And he does have sort of a big husky kind of you know Johnny Cash-ish niche about him, and he turned it down, he said he wouldn't be right for it, and then he said he regretted it. And then uh it was Johnny Cash who liked who saw um uh uh Phoenix, walking Phoenix in Gladiator, and he and he liked uh he liked him and he and he approved of Joaquin Phoenix, who you know he's a shorter stature guy, you know, Johnny Cash was six foot two, I believe. Walking a shorter stature guy. He wasn't he I think he was if you think about his role in Gladiator, which by the way, uh Gladiator, I went in as just a diehard Russell Crowe fan because after you know, you know me, I love LA Confidential is one of my top five movies of all time. And yeah, I went I went in you know, specifically wanting to see Russell Crowe, but also Gladiator fights and and I walked out of that movie going, My God, Joaquin Phoenix is unbelievable. He's the guy I he's the he's the thing I like most about Gladiator, so I think that's probably why I was excited to see this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and he didn't win for that role either, which is that's a tough run. That's a tough stretch of losses there.

unknown

Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

He's like, What do I gotta do to to win one of these things?

SPEAKER_00

Well, not only that, but this movie, uh you know, 28 million dollar budget did well, 186 million. Nope, not even nominated for best actor. I mean, not even nominated for best picture, which I wow, yeah. It was uh it was um crash, which I did not see. I need to broke back mountain, did not see. Um trying to think what other ones, uh good luck and good, I forget the name of it now.

SPEAKER_02

There was just good night, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that one, and uh honestly, I can't even remember the last one. Oh, and Capote. I'm sorry, I I haven't seen any of those, but I'm gonna venture to say this one here is probably stood the time better than any of those. I'm just saying.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and it was it was better. I don't know that I saw all of those, but I I saw at least three or four of the ones you named, and it's I thought it was way better. I thought it was gonna run away with everything. Um clean sweep the whole thing, and so uh, you know, it's it's the Oscars. They uh they tend to get it wrong uh quite a bit.

SPEAKER_00

And other stuff going on behind the scenes too. But also the year the year prior, Ray won you know, a lot of Oscars, another musical biopic, yeah, similar, similar kind of stories, uh, you know, the downtrodden, the the drugs, the the resurgence, you know, all that kind of stuff. So I think sometimes I think that might have some people think seem to think that might have played a part in both Joaquin not winning and the picture not even, but the picture not even being nominated, that's insane to me.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that was also when I think they only nominated five back then. Now it's like it's like eight or ten now. Now it's just everybody gets nominated. Yeah, it is.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, it's it's it's an award show, but still, yeah. Um, but yeah, man, I like I said, I went in going, uh, whatever, I'll see, you know, walk the line. I like biopics, not my thing.

SPEAKER_04

Me neither.

SPEAKER_00

Because you gotta go, okay. They have to tell they they have to be, it has to be a movie. They have you know, they have to keep people interested. So when they embellish truths, when they change things to a person who was still alive while this was being made, it's I always go, but just give me a documentary, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. I want to watch a fake story of that's not completely true, and then so then I have a hard time separating, just enjoying the movie for what it is, or go, wait a second, there's no way that actually happened like that, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, uh I always so I I'm the same, I'm not a big biopic guy, and I'm certainly not a big music biopic guy either. Um, exactly. Yeah, I agree, I agree.

SPEAKER_00

This one far exceeded expectations. Let's uh so let's go over. I didn't know much about uh James Mangold, but man, what a career he had, man. What a career. Coplan, girl interrupted, identity, 310 to you, my ninth and day. Uh X-Men, the oh, the Wolverine and Logan. Amazingly, I've seen neither of those. Have you seen Wolf The Wolverine or Logan?

SPEAKER_02

That doesn't surprise me. That doesn't surprise me at all. Um, I uh I saw dude Logan, very cool movie. I'm not a big comic book movie guy. This is so different than the rest of them. Highly recommend Logan. Logan is awesome.

SPEAKER_00

I did hear Logan was good. I heard The Wolverine was well a little bit not so good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't think I saw that one. Um, and then is also a good movie.

SPEAKER_00

Is it okay? Yeah, I'm amazed, and he also did uh the Bob Dylan, a complete unknown, which is probably similar to this.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. I have you seen that one. I haven't seen that one.

SPEAKER_00

I have not surprisingly, I have not seen that one again. He's around, he's Bob Dylan. Just do it, give me a documentary, you know. It's it's just I don't know. Uh but I you know at some point. I I heard Timothy Chalamet did a really great job, and um our buddy Steve Alper said it was really good. So at some point, I will go see it. Yeah, yeah. Um, but yeah, nice, solid career. He's a guy. I I had to look him up. Uh James Keach produced it. Uh, James Keach is Stacey Keach's brother. He was a much more famous uh in front of the camera guy. But here's the interesting thing. Years ago, I've been out here with all these weird jobs, you know, in in LA. Well, I was pursuing stand-up comedy, and I one of my jobs I had a temp job for a couple days, and it was, and I remember where we were at this little office, and I didn't know who the guy was, some producer guy, right? And they go, uh, and I'm just doing answering phones, I'm not having any correspondence with him directly, but I saw his office in there, and I and they go, Yeah, he's married to um he's married to Jane Seymour. I go, Oh, I know she is, you know. And I'm like, so it was literally I was working at James Keach's office. Wow. Way back when I didn't, I didn't really. This is before, you know, he was you know long before this movie, but I've actually I've actually worked and probably had some kind of interaction with him. Like, hey, would you like some coffee? One of those kind of moments, you know, with James Keach back then back in the day at his production office somewhere in Santa Monica, way back when. Uh yeah, and so let's get on to the cast. We've already talked about Joaquin Phoenix. Um another thing parallel is uh, you know, uh John everybody knows this, but you know, Johnny Cash lost his son, lost his son, lost his brother when he was young. Yep, and so did Joaquin Phoenix. Yep, yep, and that's that's kind of a thing that kind of connects. It's funny. I'm I'm where I live, right where I'm sitting right now, River Phoenix died like one block up in one door over, right there by the in front of the um Viper room. Crazy. I walk by it all the time, but I'm like, wow, right here. And he was right there, Joaquin was right there, with you know what I mean. It's like crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, um I that's that's a weird one. I saw a documentary on that, and it none of it makes any sense. Very bizarre.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, man. Uh, so I mean that I I think he uh he had a lot to draw from uh meaning Joaquin Phoenix for this particular role, and uh you know, a very similar you know upbringing in to that in that respect. That's gonna be pretty damn tough. Um uh but but but yeah, I just an interesting call, I think, when they were you know to go this short statured guy who played sort of the soft spoken guy in Gladiator. Now he's gonna play the men in black.

SPEAKER_02

I know. Well, yep. Um, and I thought just absolutely nailed it. We're gonna get into all that, but um, yeah, I I I thought he was honestly, I thought he was like perfectly cast. Russell Crowe's very interesting, too, because you're right. I could also see him doing that. Um, I could see him doing it well, but uh, I just I loved fucking. I thought he was outstanding.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, absolutely. And then a dude, Reese Witherspoon, dude. I know the the glue, the glue in his life and in this movie, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, so funny enough, like maybe Thursday, Thursday or Friday, I just had the TV on and I am Johnny Cash came on, which is a uh which is a documentary, and I caught like the second half of it while I was doing other stuff around the house. And um what really struck me is how close Reese Witherspoon got her voice, like not even singing voice, just the talking voice. Um she had like kind of like a higher pitch to her and kind of like giggly. And um, when I put on Walk the Line, I was like, oh my god, like because I'd watched them like a day apart, and uh it was it was uncanny how well she she matched up the voice.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she was literally the perfect casting. And when I when I was when I was watching uh the movie this time, uh Walk the Line, you know, she was maybe she said right off the bat, she goes, I can't really sing, so I'm sort of the comedy, you know, I'm the lighthearted, I'm sort of the lighthearted because I'm not really the talent, you know. Right, and it was sort of Johnny that brought her out. No, you are, and so and in some ways, this movie kind of mirrored that in Reese Witherspoon in her career because you never thought you always thought Reese Witherspoon, oh, she's cute, little bubbly, you know, pop, you know, bubble cum kind of stuff. And you never thought, oh, Reese Witherspoon, the serious actress, yeah. And then all of a sudden, this movie, Oscar, and I just think it it it changed perception of her, and you saw her on stage becoming this world-class dramatic actress, uh, where before she was just not known as that at all, and it was almost like mirrored what happened with the actual June Carter.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, that's a great point. Because up till I didn't know much about I remember being like, Oh, Reese Witherspoon, cool. Like, obviously, I know who she is, but you know, hadn't ever seen her in, like you're saying, in anything heavy, dramatic, you know, and uh just re-watching it, I was like, man, she she is outstanding in this movie. So good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, everything like literally not a false moment. And and that could have been, it could have been kind of a she could have done this kind of corny and a little over the top, sappy, and not at all. I just thought it I thought she hit every note uh perfectly. Uh just you know, um, yeah, and you know, her and Joaquin, they both learned to play their own instruments. They spent six months together. You know, I'm not gonna lie, learning to play the what's it called? I forget the uh thing she plays. No, no. The I forget it's it's what it's one of those auto harp, auto harp. All you do you press one button, and that's the chord. So it's not the most difficult instrument to play, it's one you play in like grade school and stuff. But the way, but she did it exactly as June would do it, you know. Yeah, uh, and that's the other thing. Johnny Cass said before Joaquin was even cast, he was telling telling, I think it was James Mangle. He was telling the director, he goes, Whoever plays me, make sure they don't hold a guitar like a baby, hold it, you know. I mean, look, they belong, you know, because it was a big it was part of who he was, the way he held it, the way he he did it, he did it, he had his own complete style, and and uh and he wanted to make sure that the person you know looked like they played, played because it I ask as a guitar player myself when I see people in movies that I know don't really play. Did you ever did you ever see? I don't want to use this example, but I'm going to did you ever see uh Jersey Boys, the movie?

SPEAKER_02

No, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's directed by Clint Eastwood, who's notorious for just get it done, just shoot it one take, you know. He just wanted to get it done in business and make money. And by the way, it is a great director, but it was a musical, and I'm watching it's supposed to be the band the four seasons, and I don't know who the actor's name is. He was a great actor in the movie, but this the music parts. I'm just watching this guy going, This guy does not know how to play a guitar at all. He doesn't even know how to fake it very well, right? Kind of took me out of the scenes when I'm watching him, going, dude, at least you know, puts, but anyhow, yeah, that he's you know, he learned how to play, he played his own instrument and he played it like Johnny Cash, and it was fantastic. And sang, yeah, absolutely too.

SPEAKER_02

Like, like again, how do you not win the Oscar? You learn to play the guitar, you learn to sing, you do like okay, sure. Yeah, how do I know?

SPEAKER_00

And he and it wasn't a pair, it wasn't like just an impression, it was it was cash-ish, yep, but it was his own. It wasn't like he was here going, Oh my god, this is hokey. He's doing an impression of or trying to do an impression of Johnny Cash. It was just like I told you, man, when he went up there and he went, hi, I'm Johnny Cash. And the earlier's career, like he wasn't sure yet that he was, you know what I mean, who he was. And then as he progressed, like little nuance like that, just his performance, dude. There's so many things to talk about. Um but yeah, uh, just reached with a spoon. Uh, Jennifer Goodwin, who I used to watch with uh I used to watch in what was the TV show, like this this fantasy TV show. I used to watch in my ex from way back when.

SPEAKER_02

I was trying to think of that too.

SPEAKER_00

Uh once upon a time.

SPEAKER_02

I forgot what I was thinking. I knew her from something else. Um, but forgot she was in it. Hadn't I haven't seen her in a while. I don't know if she's still around. She's probably doing all kinds of stuff, but um, I forgot she was in it. Me too.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm like, she looks familiar. Uh good good actress, good actor. I thought I thought the part was a little um I won't say cliche, but a little bit underdeveloped as far as let's just make sure that she's the hen pecky wife, you know what I mean, who who doesn't like his career, and that's not really how it was, right? You know, she she stuck by him. He, you know, she wasn't just this, you know, stick in the mud that didn't want him to succeed, you know. He, you know, she they divorced more because of his drug problem than June Carter, you know, plus he was also you know banging chicks left and right. Um you know, but I but but I I I get it, it's a movie, they gotta move on. They don't want to dress spend too much time on on that. But I thought her I thought her character was really under um appre not not given enough room to show who she really was. And on from what I understand, the the the children who saw this movie um were not happy about her portrayal.

SPEAKER_02

How yeah, right, yeah, and I and I agree. It's my least favorite part of the whole movie. Uh it's just too one note. The whole time. It's like really you're you can't appreciate any of this, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Like exactly.

SPEAKER_02

Really? Like uh and it just went on, and I we'll talk about that too. But um, I heard something today, I believe, that Roseanne Cash took her five times to make it through the movie. Yeah, I didn't hear something like that about how awful they made you know her mother, and she's like, it's just not how it was, you know. Um, but uh yeah, I agree. It was just kind of like okay, like we can we can cut a lot of this out. We get it, you know.

SPEAKER_00

That that must be such a weird feeling to see somebody portrayal of your actual mother, and you want to tell everybody, no, it's not how she was. You want to stick up for her because you don't want her to look like a fool in front of everybody, you know, even though it's a movie, you're like, wait a second, guys. You know, that would that would that would piss me off too.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you'd be furious! Like, wait a minute, my mom's a saint. What are you what are you doing, you know?

SPEAKER_00

All right, I have to go on a tangent real quickly here. So a while back, probably let's just say two years ago, I was doing comedy here in LA. I think it was up in Burbank at this outdoor brewery, indoor outdoor, but the the show was outdoor, and it was kind of in this back alleyway, really cool bar, you know, microbrewery place. But with the you set up my I forget who ran it. My set up a microphone, and and there's tables, and you know, there's some people looking at us, but it's spacious, so people aren't people are showing up not because of the comedy. So, some some people are there for the comedy show, other people are just coming in because they just want to, you know, go get a beer. They don't know it's a comedy show, and so oh hold on, just I'm knocking up a bone what's going on. And so um, I'm up on stage and these bikers come walking in, like you know, bikers, probably like I don't know, three or four, and they're all dressed alike, and and they're kind of they're in the back, but they're kind of chatting during my set. So I just started going, I just went to Adam like, okay, well, what's up, guys? Are you guys uh you guys always dress alike? I'm making fun of them. Do you guys call each other up? Whatever. And a couple one of them or two of them short a chuckle. One of the guys just looks at me like he's like a gangbanger, like looks like he's not happy with me at all. I stopped make I stopped talking to him at all. I'm just going out on my set. I'm like, Oh, I'm not this is not a good idea, right? And and uh I mentioned Cleveland, and one of the guys at the table goes, Bay Village. And I had just moved back to Ohio from living with Kristen in Rocky River. Bay Village is the very next town over from Rocky River. So I used to go to the Oh, Bay Village, yeah, I know. And I was from Rocky River. Oh, that's great, man. Blah blah blah. So, anyhow, kind of talking to the guy during my set, finish my set. It wasn't not a very memorable comedy set, one way or the other. Yeah, but but but that one guy just looked like he was angry at me. Not the guy I was talking to about Bay Village, the other guy, the big guy. And I'm like, man, do I get should I just try to sneak out of here? Or this guy looks like you know a little crazy biker guys, yeah. Yeah, and and and I'm like, uh, there's nowhere to, I can't, there's no back door, I gotta leave. I'd have to walk sort of past him, you know, to get out of here. And then I go, so I get I either got that choice or I can go up to the table, act like, hey man, just you know, and just talk to the guy about Bay Village and try to maybe win them over. Yeah, and so I that's what I do. I go up and I sit down and go, Bay Village, hey, you know, blah blah blah, yeah. Rocky River, we just start talking about Ohio and blah. As I'm talking, the other guy, he's just looking at me like he's just you know, wants to kill me. But the guy I'm talking to seems to be the de facto leader, yeah. Yeah, I just get that vibe that he kind of runs the show. The guy I'm talking to, thank god, like me. And while I'm talking, while I'm talking to him, I go and man, this guy looks familiar. Who is this guy? Do I know this guy? How do I know him? Turns out it was Robert Patrick.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was Robert Patrick, yeah. But he's he grew up part of his time, he grew up was in Bay Village in Ohio, and it dude, that guy he's been through some stuff, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Um, okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He he says it. He I guess he had problems with moves and maybe drugs after the Terminator, which sort of curtailed his career because you're going, you know, that guy should have been a monster star after Terminator 2. Yeah, um, but anyhow, yeah, that's what that's my Robert Patrick story. Wow, how long ago was that? Was that recently, maybe? Yeah, yeah, something like that there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And he's in a bike, he's in a he's in a motorcycle gang, but I think I honestly think they're like it's like a sober gang, like to promote sobriety and stuff like that there. But yeah, he sort of saved my life from the other dude. So I've been saying 1000. Uh, what do you think of him in this movie?

SPEAKER_02

Well, speaking of the T1000, well, I was just kind of looking for you know, little trivia and stuff about this movie, and I just rewatched it before we jumped on. Um, when they're going to uh Folsom, his credits go they disappear as you get to the bars of the prison, and it was an homage to the T1000 walking through the bars and turning into liquid metal.

SPEAKER_00

No way, that's one of the coolest little things I've ever heard.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, it's like you would never really put it together.

SPEAKER_00

What a great little Easter egg. Is that what it's called?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, so uh, I just thought that was really cool. But um, I I sort of like um uh Jennifer Goodwin. I mean, I think he's a great actor, but the character was just so like why like why are you like this? Um, everything that I've uh heard and read, and I've read a pretty good amount of stuff on Johnny Cash is uh in the beginning, the the dad was uh pretty tough on him, but over the years they had a great relationship. Um he was at the uh Folsom prison. You know, like he would come to the shows, you know. So I just thought, you know, yeah, they made him a little too simple, too simplistic, one notey mean. Yeah, and he's a great actor. Give him some more, you know, to work with, I thought. But um, you know, for what he was given, I thought he did great.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I thought he was good. I just thought that the character was like okay, you know. I mean, it's just this little little hokey with everything that comes out of his mouth is negative towards his son, and it uh it just made no sense, you know.

SPEAKER_02

It's like, what do you mean? Like, why are you I don't know, so yeah, he was great, the character underdeveloped for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I uh we I guess we could probably get into the movie now that we got most of the people. It starts off, you know, with them. This is another thing I another I don't want to say problem, but a little okay. We start off with you know, right at the bat uh the oh just that beginning scene, yeah, with the music, and it's louder and louder, and the guards walking past, and we're right into this. Going, what the fuck? Yeah, I mean, and going, uh almost like we're waiting, we're starting here, or are we gonna learn? You know, I have no idea what's going on. I forgot how we'd started. Wasn't it great though?

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god, the bass, everything the bands out there playing, and yeah, and you just you could feel like the the energy of the prison. Um, yeah, I thought it was a killer, killer opening.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, man. And then his hand on the blade, you're like, what the fuck is happening? Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and then boom, cut to his childhood. And uh I but it was great. It was a great, great, well-written, well, everything was perfect with that. Get you right into this thing. Yep, because sometimes that's the hard part with biopics. You're like, I don't want to go through all this stuff, I don't care about his when he was four years old. You know what I mean? Part of the thing, even when I read books on I go, I try to let's get through this so we get to when I actually know the person, right?

SPEAKER_03

Right, right.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, so I thought they did a great job with that. They didn't they man, they didn't they didn't waste a whole lot of time on the child, dude, man.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, they just got yeah, show what we need to see. Oh my god, what a gruesome injury that was. I mean, Jesus.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, where were you? Where were you? Ugh you are nothing. The devil took the wrong son. I mean, come on, did a dad really say that? I have a hard time believing. Uh, but I would imagine maybe back in those days, the older son who was more easy to get along with might have been the favorite, if you know what I mean.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, no, he was, he was for sure. And he was I don't know if he said exactly that, but he said something along those lines.

SPEAKER_00

Like so Johnny grew up thinking that you know, yeah, for a long time.

SPEAKER_02

Like, uh, I can't remember what the exact thing he said, but it was something absolutely crushing, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think I don't I don't think that ever leaves a person ever.

SPEAKER_02

That's what I mean. Yeah, no, it was uh devastating. And he was what 10 or something, you know, like yeah, so yeah, it was uh it stuck with him for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that that that that that right there that tells a lot about who he ended up becoming his whole and who he stayed his whole life, yeah, but then uh all of a sudden, boom, they're in bed. Boom! Oh, he's Joaquin Phoenix. No, we no, we're we're done with that stuff.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Now here now here is one part that I thought was a little corny. Uh now he's Joaquin Phoenix, so what 10-12 years have passed. Dad looks exactly the same.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Did you not have a makeup guy? Could you throw a little gray in there? Something. Yeah, he did not age a day.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, okay. That's hilarious.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, he didn't age a day the whole movie, let's be honest.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and then at the end, it was like, oh, I they yeah, they finally put a little, a little a little, maybe a little bit, yeah, yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. But yeah, that I mean it was not not to be a funny moment, but I was like, oh my god, it's a dad, he's the same age, and now he's a grown-up Johnny Cash. Okay, guys, yeah. Hire a makeup person, would you yeah? Uh you know, and then walks off. He's going, oh, that I thought that was kind of interesting. Uh, he's going to war, you know, war. He goes, he's going to Germany, wars in Korea. Again, another button.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, which in the beginning I thought was great. Like it's a great way to shape an early, you know, character, young Johnny Cash. But the way it just kept going throughout the whole movie, it's like, dude, knock it off already, you know. Yeah, but yeah, but yeah, the little dad like digs at him constantly, like, Jesus.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, no, exactly. Uh, but that was cool. He walks off, and you know, and that this is he's starting his life, and then and then uh then well, they're it they're I didn't even look this up. They they're watching a movie called Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison. I I'm guessing that's an actual movie.

SPEAKER_02

Um, I forget if that's the title of it. Um, but when he was in Germany, that yeah, he watched they they what watched some movie which gave him the whole idea for the whole thing. He just kind of always like thought about it.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so that's where it did come from. The impetus.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, yep, yep.

SPEAKER_00

Because that's another thing that some people said, you know, not a phony, but he had that rebel, I'm one of you, you know, you know, downtrodden, you know, and he'd never been to prison, right? You know, he wasn't really this guy that he portrayed. Uh, you know, it's kind of like a phony in a lot of ways, but people acclimated like it almost like he had been, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, yeah, for sure. But yeah, and his dad has a line about that later in the movie, which we'll get to.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, yep, yep.

SPEAKER_00

You know what I'm talking about.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. Um, I also thought it was cool when they were like, doesn't your bus leaves in an hour or whatever? Like, nobody gives them a ride, your kids going overseas, and you're like you know what I mean. He's just like, Well, you better, you better get walking.

SPEAKER_00

He just walks down this dirt path, yeah, dude.

SPEAKER_02

From the middle of nowhere.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, and now you have you there's no way that has to be dramatic license because that was like that was a dirt road to nowhere.

SPEAKER_02

It looks like when you're driving into Vegas and it's just the endless road as far as you can see, and he's just not mean, he's not gonna make it by an hour. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That that scene just it kind of reminded me a little bit of a scene from uh just visually of from Old Brother Where Artho.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Kind of like kind of like that kind of a you know, South South America, I mean in the South, the deep south, and crops and just dirt roads, which is a beautiful as a as a visual. It was beautiful, yeah. Um, and T Bone Barnett, the musical supervisor on this, was also the guy on Old Brother with Artho, actually. Oh interesting, yeah, same guy. Um, so then he's starting. Then they they they just do they do a good job of getting past the muck, getting right into you know, he's starting to write, I hear the train of coming, you know. And then now all of a sudden, now all of a sudden, boom, Memphis, 1955, married with a kid. You know, we've skipped all the meeting. The first wife getting on with it, and by the way, this is kind of interesting. I just learned this recently. Uh, his first wife, um there was rumors that she was like interracial, yeah. Her parents, she came from interracial, and that some people uh, you know, this is the deep south, of course. Uh, as he got more famous, some people like uh wanted to boycott like his concerts and called him, you know, like some terrible names and stuff. If you look at pictures of her, his original his first wife, Vivian, she's definitely uh interracial.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, for sure. I um I actually read her biography, like you're kidding, yeah, like 20 years ago. Um and because I didn't know anything about her, and I just grabbed it and I was like, oh, this seems interesting. I don't remember a ton about it, but um that was again the part that the movie just like miss did the whole time, like she was way more supportive um throughout, and then towards the end, it was the drugs and everything else that kind of derailed everything. It was great though, it had letters from him from Germany, and like it was a cool read, but she talks about a lot of that stuff firsthand.

SPEAKER_00

Um yeah, no, I I feel like maybe I after after watching this, I go, I saw that she wrote one. I go, Man, I'd I'd be interested to read that book. But I but I of course it's 2005, it's amazing it wasn't that long ago. But right, I feel like they might have wanted to cast somebody a little more, you know. Jennifer Goodwin is all American, goody goody, you know, kind of stuff. And I you know, once I saw pictures of the original, uh the Vivian Cash, I'm like, uh, they probably should have cast somebody a little more similar to that. Yeah, I all agree. And all this all-American Ginny Goodwin, you know, like I said, they just wanted to get past her whole thing, yeah. Uh her whole story and get on with whatever you know. I I get it, it's a two-hour movie, they gotta move through it forward, but I thought that was interesting. But yeah, now he's a salesman and sees the shoe shine boys, and here's you know, that gives him the thing for get rhythm. We we guess, you know, that might be creative license, who knows?

SPEAKER_02

But cool scene either way, and I gotta say one thing about that because I do sales now. When he's walking, there's a scene of him walking down the street, and he just got dunked on all week, couldn't get a sale, couldn't get together. He walked down that street. I was like, I know that walk that might have been my favorite believable part of acting in the entire movie. See, that guy had a tough week as a salesman.

SPEAKER_00

It was completely fucking defeated. Doors slamming in your face.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, I'm telling you, I rewound it. I was like, that might be the most the best part of acting in this whole movie. It was incredible.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, the things artists have to do on their way. I this is unrelated to anything, but I had a friend, my friend, my friend's friend, I don't know who this person was, but she was a friend of my friend, if that's uh complicated enough. But anyhow, we're we're all trying to be comedians. And my friend Sammy, she was telling me about her friend whose name I can't remember. She would do children, she was a children's clown, she'd get hired to go parties for kids, right? Already sounds terrible, right? So she said she was at this party, all dressed up with her makeup, and she was trying to impress and keep in mind, Hollywood, probably rich, schnobby kids, and uh these kids were just giving her hell, and she did and you know, just making fun of her. And she goes, she went out to her car and she started crying, and she, you know, tears are running, and her white and makeup is just running down her face. And she she she said she looked in the mirror and she goes, I hate you to herself out loud. Oh no, the things we have to do.

SPEAKER_02

No, what she should have done is gone back in the house as the scary clown and terrified all absolutely, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Turn it turned it into a win. Um then we are coming up on what I was it certainly the first time I saw this movie was my favorite scene, it still might be. Yeah, and then uh you I think you know what I'm talking about here, where he sees them make your own. He's Sun Records, make your own record. He's looking inside, what the hell is this? Yeah, you know, and then uh and then we see him on the porch for the first time actually singing, meaning Joaquin Phoenix actually singing, and uh you know, with his buddies, and and you know, the wife wants to go home, the hen punks we're getting evicted, you know. It's like we're getting evicted, and you can't blame the wife, like we're getting evicted. You're drinking beer and singing with these ding bats. Get to work.

SPEAKER_02

My dad offered you a job. Did you even consider that?

SPEAKER_00

You know, like I forgot about that. Yeah, exactly. I forgot about that too.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's not without justification for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely, and then uh the meeting with Sam Phillips and this actor, I forget his name now, he's had a good career. Um, yeah, the guy the guy who played Sam man, what he was just perfect, man. I want to give him a shout out. Dallas Roberts, that's his name. Dallas Roberts, so damn good. He's had a really career. The Walking Dead, Unforgettable, The Good Wife. He's been on a lot of things. Um, but wasn't he great?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, to be honest, like this is like what he says to Joaquin and the the Tennessee 2 or whatever is what every artist really needs to hear. Which is, I don't believe you. You're doing an imitation of what you think this should be, and it sucks. So do something that's gonna inspire me. I believe the way he words it is like, if you're laying in a ditch and you're gonna play one song before you die, what's that song? A little dramatic, but you know, like the message is what I mean. Like, the message is great, like every artist needs that. Yo, stop wasting your fucking time with this, do what comes from you. And it, I thought it was very cool, very well done, and happened early enough in Johnny Cash's career that he, you know, he's like, Oh, okay, you know, could gave him the chance to kind of pursue that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I would like to know, love to know what the time frame was. Did this happen in the moment right there where he just goes, he switches and sings a song and the guy's impressed? Was it over a course of a week? Did he go home? Did he think about it? I'd love to know. Obviously, things are condensed in movies, but that and I'll give you another example. I hate to go off on tangents, but that's why we're doing a podcast. Yeah, uh, I was up on stage, you know, doing stand-up comedy. I don't know if you guys listening know we both do stand-up comedy. I was at the ice house, this is a years ago, and I had a I had a bit that I thought was funny. It was a it was a completely manufactured bit about an uncle. I just made up this guy, my uncle. Oh, my uncle's so crazy. He was working on his car the other day, totally made up it. Fake uncle. And uh, I don't even remember the bit now, but I thought it was funny, full of confidence, cockiness. Maybe not cock, probably wasn't even confidence, more cockiness. I'm up there, I'm telling this bit. I go, So my uncle, and this lady in the front row goes, uh-uh. And everybody could hear her. I go, I go, what'd you say? She goes, she goes, uh-uh. I go, what's uh-uh mean? She goes, you're lying. Now everybody, the whole room, the whole room gets quiet. I go, what do you mean I'm lying? She goes, This whole bit you're telling right now is fake. And I'm like, I looked, I didn't know what to do. I go, you're right. I go, how did you know that? She goes, I study, I'm a psychologist, I study body language, and you're you know, I don't even remember how I got through this set. I certainly didn't, I certainly didn't do well, it was awkward. Maybe I did I didn't rag on her though, I didn't make fun of her, and I just went on my set. I went home and I crossed that bit out and I looked at every bit that I had. I go, if this isn't based on some kind of truth, then I'm done. Like, if in other words, I talk about my family now. Maybe I'll embellish a little bit, but it's the core, it comes from a truth, and that made me that moment made me a way better comic because I'm not selling phony shit anymore. It's like I was coming, I've always been coming from a real place, so I can't get thrown, you know. So, anyhow, that was like I was like, I was totally relating to this moment going, Oh my god, that happened to me.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh, it's it's yeah, I agree. It might still be my favorite part of the whole movie.

SPEAKER_00

It's my favorite scene. My favorite scene.

SPEAKER_02

It's up there, yeah. Uh, I agree.

SPEAKER_00

And the guy who played Sam, you're right. The the lines might have been a little if you had one, it could have been so corny, but I thought I thought the guy, I thought the guy said it very real. The actor, that's what I mean. You know, I can't. He wasn't like down his throat. I can't market gospel no more. Gospel doesn't sell, you know what I mean? You know, wait, what's wrong with the way I sing it? I don't believe you. That's literally that's it. He wasn't like he goes, I'm just telling you, like you said, telling him the truth. Yeah, and here's the one of the after all the ditch thing, you know, one song that sums you up, and then it just closes in on his face. And you know what it reminded me of in the godfather? When Michael goes, I'll kill him, and all of a sudden they start panning in as Michael becomes Michael Corleone, right? Yeah, him becoming. Johnny Cash, similar kind of a vibe, like powerful, yeah, powerful. Yeah, and then he sings, you know, uh Prison Blues. And he starts off just him, bear and he's song. His voice is not great. I hear the train. You can tell he doesn't believe in himself, and then all of a sudden the band guys kind of kick in. Yeah, and then right there, it's just it's brilliant. I mean, the brilliant was brilliant scene. Oh, I agree. How he did not win the Oscar. I just I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Uh uh the other part of that scene I loved is the band behind him is like they start kind of tripping out. They're like, Johnny, we don't we don't know this one, like we're not we don't know what to play. And he's just like, fuck it, I'm doing it anyway, you know. And then you're right. Then they start like, you know, look, it's obviously not Mozart, but they start like, okay, we put a little bass line in here, and it's just like, oh shit, here we go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and it and it kind of locks in, you know, they kind of they just they the feeling, it's really it they feel it just like he feels it, yeah. And and I just and and from from what I read from the time he was had that job as a salesman, within a year he was already recording and becoming a rising star. Like it was pretty quick, yeah. Which blows my mind if you think about it. You can just walk up with your guitar case. Can I record something? I'll come back on Tuesday. Yeah, I guess that's simple.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, how much think of how much wasted time those guys probably sat through, like, because any dickhead on the street can just come up, hey, can I record?

SPEAKER_00

They're like, Yeah, all right, you know, like exactly, but also how many were actually doing it back then? Probably not a ton, you know what I mean? Yeah, that's true. Yeah, you know, just it was a different uh you know era back then. That's just crazy to me. And then uh then we cut to Jerry Lee Lewis, you know, and he's up on stage. Uh, who is that actor? His name is Waylon, and he is Waylon Jennings' godson. Oh, is that yeah, the guy who the guy who played uh Waylon Payne, his name is. Yeah, he's a good he's a uh country singer, songwriter, musician. Yep. Um, and he's the he's the son of Sammy Smith, uh, who I don't know, but was a big time um she is best known for her. Oh, she hit oh damn, she sang help me make it through the night. Uh written by Chris Christopherson. Big hit, monster hit, but that was his mother. So he he's he's a kid of the you know, of the ilk is a talented guy. I thought he was great in this movie. I thought he oh my god, yeah, fucking nailed it as as uh um Jerry Lee Lewis.

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I actually would have liked to have seen a little bit more of him, to be honest with you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and he auditioned, I forget the other role he auditioned for. Um, and uh James Mangle was like, No, you're you're you're not right at all for this, but I think uh just immediately cast him as Jerry Lee Lewis. Like, I don't think he had to audition again. He was like, Oh, you're just gonna play this role and failed it.

SPEAKER_00

That's crazy. Waylon, uh Waylon, you know, Waylon Jennings is his godfather, and as we come to find later, shooter Jennings plays Waylon in this movie, yeah. Um, and then and then Jerry Lee Lewis and then runs into June. That's where they meet with the guitar strap, and gosh damn fucking Reese Witherspoon right off the bat, which is so like magnetic. Yeah, I can keep it going for two minutes. Why is this trapping you? I just oh my god, yeah, yep. And then I just moved the felt the movie just really really came to life once she got on screen, yeah. And the two of them, then that's when it just now we've clicked into a whole different gear here. Yeah, and the music scenes started clicking in, which was the best part of the movie, man. Those scenes were just great, yeah. Doing their own singing, my god, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh yeah, I agree. And I don't I can't remember if like I I don't think I don't know if like she they literally got tangled up or whatever, but what a just a great way to have them meet and kick everything off because they're gonna be in this weird, you know, relationship for the next however many years. Um, but also to your point, man, I could have used a lot more of we got Roy Orbison, we get Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis. Like, I could have used 15 minutes of that little tour, you know, like um I just thought that whole season just them interacting, absolutely. Yeah, I thought it was really cool.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, just as a guy who plays guitar, I have one right here, two right here, actually. Not a chance. Did they get that tangled up where she couldn't get away for several minutes? No, not a chance.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I just meant to uh yeah, did they like have any kind of whatever? Um I was like, I'm sitting there and I'm like, all right, that was a little corny, but I loved it. Yeah, exactly. It worked, they made it work for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. It's hilarious. Yeah, um was what I was gonna say there. I will say this. He got up there and I didn't even I'd never even heard the song get rhythm. Get a rhythm when you I listen, so I just loved that song in the movie. I went listening to the original Johnny Cash version. I like Joaquin's version better, literally, I like it better. I that's how much I like the way he sang that damn song. And they and he and it wasn't like it just did 20 seconds, he sang the whole fucking song in the movie, which I thought was cool. Well, I really thought that was actually really cool.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They gave him time. Yeah, it wasn't like sometimes you watch these music bios, and it's like, you know, you get four bars, and then it's on to the next scene. And this one, they let it like they let it breathe quite a bit, which is great.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. It it was a yeah, that was the first time him on and he sang the whole thing. And that's when that I think that's the time he goes, huh? Oh, yeah, that's that's the time when he goes, Hello, I'm Johnny Cash. And you're like, he's not sure if he is yet, right? He's not sure if he is yet. He he's still figuring it out, and I just thought the way he did that was great. Yeah, sings the entire song, and then you know, and he met June. Now, of course, he's been enamored with June for years, yeah. So that you know, he's already like she doesn't know who he is, but he's like, Oh, I know who you are, yeah. And so that that was a big movement, and then you know, the then we cut dude the beleaguered wife on the phone, you know. Oh, we gotta have this, you know. Um, and then June sings, Reese sang, uh, you know, her funny little goofy songs and stuff, and so good at it. Yeah, and then and then the cafe, then they're then they meet in the cafe, and yeah. Uh, what do you think of that scene? The cafe scene. I thought that was interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, I liked it for sure. It made sense. You get to see them kind of get to know each other a little bit. Um she's what is that's when she's like, I don't have that much talent, that's why I learned to be funny just to kind of stay in the game, you know. Like, and to your point earlier, that's Johnny Cash is like, Are you out of your mind? You're so talented, and he's the only one that sees her this way, including herself.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and and basically she says, Well, it's it's kind of interesting because you know, he shows the pictures of his wife and his kids, and you know, which I you know, interesting, but I he's trying to be honest, he's trying to be illegit, you know, and uh it's not just a terrible guy, and um, but then she says, you know, the the her parents basically said you're the funny one, and and what does he say? He goes, Parents aren't always the best judge of things, you know. I thought, ooh, you know what I mean. I again, this is one of those moments you're like, did any of this even remotely happen in real life? Right, right, right strictly, you know, just for the movie. I you know, a lot of this stuff, this is all based on his two autobiographies. So a lot of the stuff has to be, you know, true to a some degree, but I just thought it was a really cool scene. Parents don't know, because I'm like, oh my god, he's gonna transform her, he's gonna save her in a way, and he's she's gonna say these two uh through fucking fire and brimstone, they end up together, yeah. You know, uh after so many so much time. Uh but it and here's the start of it right here. You're like, these two are already madly in love, and and only he knows it, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. And it just starts in a diner, you know. Like if you if you reverse engineer this like legendary, you know, love story. Uh oh, this shit started at a diner.

SPEAKER_00

Like, oh, okay, you know, yeah, crazy, probably in somewhere like Macon, Georgian or something, you know. Uh I will say I've having driven all through these states, you know, back when I was performing at college and stuff, I've always had a sort of fascination with the down south, you know, in south in country, and you hear all the country music and see the just it's a cool little vibe down there. I don't know. I I I'm not super into country music and stuff, but I do I wouldn't mind going down there and just spending time immersing myself in that kind of culture and music because I do love the music when I hear it, like in situations like this.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The music was perfect.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so okay, now we uh he's now he's at the new house, but he's already tired and he's beat and he's just worn down, and he's getting fan mail from girls. And what do we get? The beleaguered wife. Uh uh, okay, it's like, all right, I got it.

SPEAKER_02

Um, my big problem with that was she's like that it's 10 to 1 women to men, and they're all saying disgusting things, and they're in their bathing suits. And I'm like, oh, mail fraud is a crime because she just opened all these letters and read all this fan mail, and that's fucked up, you know.

SPEAKER_00

But uh also who's who who's the one dumbass guy sending Johnny Cash mail, yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, actually, we need to we need to see a biography of that dude because he's probably real weird.

SPEAKER_00

Who writes Johnny Cash letters?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Also, yeah, I was thinking this though. We're let's just backtrack a little bit. These guys, the you know, the get rhythm, you know, and he first of all, he follows Jerry Lee Lewis, who goes back, he goes, No one wants to follow a monster or something like that. There, just a killer, and you're like, you know, as performers, you know how it is, man. Sometimes somebody goes up and kills you, like, Oh my god, I gotta go up next. Yeah, he goes up, he goes up, does his thing, and he kills. And then, no matter what, man, these four of these guys are great, but there's only one Elvis Presley. Yeah, imagine that Elvis, you everybody kills Elvis goes last and just fucking annihilates because he had the looks, he had the style, he had the voice, he had the hair, he had it all, you know.

SPEAKER_02

And the hype and everything, I mean it was very runaway freight train. There's nothing getting in the way of that, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm just saying, imagine being all four of those guys are fantastic, but then all but but but but Elvis has just got everything, everything, you know. Um crazy, just and then yeah, then they're in the caravan with the gang, and and he tries to make out with June. She just won't. I just I just went through a divorce, you know, a bad divorce, you know. So now he's taking drugs and uh oh, then the girl comes backstage, and now we know, oh, this show is from what I've uh come to understand, Johnny Cash was no was not immune to uh the groupies backstage, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Especially early on, yeah. I mean, yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, he's a country kid, man. You know, all sudden he's up making money, partying, you know, well, you know, it's all it's like these people that he he what happened is he got married too soon. That's all. They you know they outgrew each other. They it's very similar to Dean Martin, who I'm you know, I'm a huge Dean Martin guy. And uh the same exact thing happened. Dean Martin, Dean Martin got married young, had kids young, and then he becomes a star, and he just outgrew her. He ended up she ended up having unfortunately his wife ended up his first wife, ended up having problems with alcohol and stuff, and kind of night, not a very happy ending. Uh, but he was he was close with all his kids his whole life, all of his kids. Dean Dean was, and and Johnny was close with his kids, like they portrayed it as if he was this, you know, could care less about his kids, but he was actually close with all his kids.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, up to the end, too.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

Um, and that's that was my other thought when I was re-watching this was like, dude, this is nobody's fault. You two just have no business being together, you know what I mean? Like, is you're just married too young. Yeah, oh yeah, and that's the thing. In the beginning, I think she says, We dated for three weeks and got married, and I haven't seen you in two years. Like, what he went off to war, yeah, like it's just yeah, it's no good.

SPEAKER_00

And you think how many people never mind him being a star? How many of these kids I could you you and I have been on military tours, yeah, military basis, talking to these young kids, they meet a girl before they go off to basic training. They and then they write now, of course, they email or message or FaceTime, but still they're not physically around each other for maybe months, maybe years at a time. They're 21 years old, yeah, and they think they're in love. And oh, it's just it's gotta be so difficult for these people. Yeah, so in other words, here's the movie. He's backstage with the girl, and also cut to him at home screaming babies, etc. We get it, we get it. Life's terrible at home. We get it, we get it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yep.

SPEAKER_00

You know, cut to him with girls, June and Johnny in the store. June gets called out by the Christian, you know, the lady. But you know, that's that that's down south, baby.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. Oh, trust me, I know all about it, but uh, and I'm not even I'm not even deep south at all. Like, yeah, you're not not even deep south, but you've noticed a difference, right? Oh my god, and it's telling that's a whole other podcast, brother. Um but uh I I was I was stunned that this lady said something to a star, like what balls that must have taken, but obviously different time, different era, different place. But I love the way uh June Carter was like, Well, I'm sorry I disappointed you, ma'am. And like didn't cause a scene, didn't like you know, like just but but also I think she just meant it, yeah. You know, like that's what I mean. Like she just was like, Oh, okay, yeah, and just like I learned you learned so much about the character June Carter just from that one reaction, you know, didn't freak out or anything. I thought it was great.

SPEAKER_00

I wouldn't mind seeing a movie about June Carter, the human being interesting, interesting, interesting person. Uh uh, it's funny. I was on a cruise ship once and doing a show. Um, this is a while back. Now, a lot of cruise ships you can do, they have adult shows, you can be more edgy, certainly. Uh certain certain lines really like it, really edgy. I always work pretty clean, and I'm talking like family green, G-rated. And one time I got done with a show, and I'm staying in the back, I had a great set, great set. Feel great about myself. Yeah, and I and I talk about my divorce, but briefly, I just say how we got divorced. Or my marriage didn't last, but you know, I don't go say anything bad about marriage or her or anything. No, and I just mentioned that you know, that it didn't last long, but hey, you know, I love being married because you know she had a she had benefits, so I got benefits the moment she got married. That was my whole joke, kind of stuff.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I remember.

SPEAKER_00

I'm standing in the back. This lady comes up to me, she goes, Why'd you have to say you got divorced? I'm like, because it happened. I mean, you know what I mean? Yeah, but but uh that's this reminded me of this right here. Like that these these these uh it's like a Bible thumping. It's it's oh my god, you can uh you you know that you are a sinner, you are going that kind of stuff, you know. That's literally uh, you know, uh I I feel like June Carter and in the movie, uh the way she played it, she felt like she really did disappoint all these people and failed in a in a failed, you know, her Christian ways, you know. So you know that's what I'm saying. June is a very interesting person, yeah. You know, went through a lot in life, and you know, and continue. So then anyhow, they uh moving along, they go fishing. She shows them how she shows them how to fish, and you're like, it's on.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Which I thought was gonna be like the next scene. I was like, oh, here we go. And it's a little more cat and mouse than that.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, the way this movie was cutting, I thought they're gonna be okay. Here's June. Here's uh what's his name? I can't remember his name now. There's son, yeah. Um, but uh then they dissolved to the concert. Her watching from the side. Now she's I at this point, she's gotta be smitten with the Johnny Cash. No, because he's not become Johnny Cash. Uh he calls her out, she doesn't want to come. June, June, June, June, and she comes, but she comes out barefoot and fucking nails it, man. And they sing the song that she sang with her ex-husband. Remember, she didn't want to sing it.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And let's just say, I'm sorry, but those two singing together fucking highlight, man. Yeah, I mean, they both sound great on their own together. Could have seen more of that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, totally. Uh, we'll get into that too a little bit later. Uh, I gotta I got a whole thought about all that, but um, I also love like Reese's performance where she's like it's not out yet, and she's like, dude, I don't want to you know, like what are you like what are you crazy? And then as soon as she gets on stage, it's hey June Carter Cash. Yeah, just so just nailed it, nailed it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, bro. Uh but and then who she who does she see in the crowd? The scowling Bible thumping lady at the from the grocery store. She sees her and you know, and that and you know runs off because now she's now she's now she's doing it, now she's singing this the wrong song in front of this lady. And yeah, what what I think what that lady represents to her is whether this is manufacture, but what it represents to her is I think June probably felt like she lost a lot of her audience when she got a divorce because you didn't do that in her world. People looked up almost like religiously looked up to her, yeah. And uh, you know, also now she's a divorcee. Probably hit her pretty hard, honestly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, that's a good point.

SPEAKER_00

So uh he goes to her dressing room, Catu wife at home, waking up to the radio, then the gang's all drunk in the afternoon jamming. June, June's tired of them. You're all gonna blow this tour. You can't walk the line. Yeah, all right, a little movie magic right there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, wait a second.

SPEAKER_00

Cut you, I walk the line.

SPEAKER_02

The baseline kicks in, and there's cash in checks. I was like, All right, I actually I honestly really don't like me too. I could see where it could be cheesy, but I was like, All right, that's exactly.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, all right, put you in such a great mood, man. Yeah, like you said, you hear that all of a sudden you hear it, and boom, we are in.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I the montage recording, new house with kids signing autographs, and they kept it moving. He kept this damn thing moving, which I really appreciate. Uh appreciated. Even while I was watching, I'm like, Oh man, we're not bogging down in anything, yeah. You know, uh Limo lying in bed, Johnny. Now he's got the Johnny Cash guitar with back home, big house. But he but he continues to look terrible. All this success, and he just looks worse and worse. He's exhausted, yeah. His bags under his eyes, you know, he looks unhappy. Yeah, and then uh oh, this I there's my note. Now they're at the big house, and his dad and mom are there. Dad has not aged one day.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, yep, yep. Looking great.

SPEAKER_00

This is after the war. This is after his. This has got to be about 12-15 years later. But then again, Johnny Cash hasn't aged a day either. Since he walked off, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, nobody in this movie really aged at all the entire movie.

SPEAKER_02

That's yeah, that's yeah, that's true.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they had hey, they had to cut budgets somewhere. Makeup, no makeup.

SPEAKER_02

Get him out of here.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, so then he takes his wife to his show. I must say, Ginny Goodwin, when she was all dialed up, she looked gorgeous. Yeah, she put that nice dress on and stuff. Like, oh wow, Ginny, yeah, she's looking good. She, I you know, she's always kind of cute and perky, but you know, all dried up. You're like, you forget she's actually gorgeous uh in her own right, and then uh sees June. Again, this seemed a little hokey that you know she's gonna do he's gonna do it right in front of his wife, you know, not be able to maintain. Uh, and then June, June had gotten married in this time frame, right? That's interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, which so she was married twice before Johnny twice, right? Okay, um and I can't remember if it's at this scene or where it is, but where he says, Oh, do you think it's gonna work this time?

SPEAKER_00

You know, yeah, totally insult her.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and it's like that that wasn't great, but uh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, she also says, to be honest with you, it's not working out that great. Now I looked online, they they were married, I think like nine years. It wasn't like this little it happened for two years and then we got out of it. You know, she was married quite a while, so yeah, uh quite a it just took these guys so long to finally get to where they needed to be uh to get together. I mean, it's like my god. Uh I I think it's all both because they were trying to do the right thing, you know, trying hard. They're not it's not gonna happen, but you know, they could have just said, let's leave each other spouses, let's get married next year, and that's all. But uh, she storms out, he finds her, he wants to tour again with her. He tells her she's got a voice instead of just being a comedian, he wants her to be a singer. And To her singing, then they cut to her singing a real song, you know. And this is him saving her, her saving him. And then uh she brings up Johnny Cash, and what does he say? Hello, I'm Johnny Cash. Totally different than how he said it before. And I loved it. I loved it. And uh oh, and they sing it ain't me, babe. Yeah, I didn't even know I didn't know Johnny Cash. That's one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs of all time. Uh, I didn't even know they had ever covered that till I watched this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay, yeah, yeah. So that biography that I watched, uh I am Johnny Cash. There was a whole section. Him and Bob Dylan were like really, really good friends. And uh they helped each other write songs, and they Johnny Cash had him on his show, and they were like for a long time, they were really, really close.

SPEAKER_00

So I and I never knew that. And I'm I'm a huge Dylan guy, yeah. And I and I never knew that, but yeah, they said uh because you know, Dylan went through his old trials and tribulations when he went electric and everybody hated his guts and he didn't care. And yep. Cash Johnny Cash, despite his own self-sabotaging problems, he just generally seemed to be a genuinely great guy who's who who stuck through his people through through thick and thin. Yeah, you know, like just a really uh if you see interviews with him, the person, the actual person, just seems like a genuinely sweet guy who just unfortunately had a lot of troubles in life, you know. But as a person, uh sometimes in in this movie, I thought Joaquin, of course, you know, you have to, but sometimes he looked a little psychotic, you know what I mean? A little angry, or Johnny Cash, I think, just had more of a peaceful nature about him than than just being angry all the time. You know, I know there's there's the famous scene of him with the flipping off, you know, Johnny Cash and stuff. But every time I see this guy, like in interviews, like he seems like a gent, gentle soul, like just a big gentle soul.

SPEAKER_02

Um to that point, there's that scene that was um a couple scenes back where Joaquin's freaking out and he pulls the sink off the wall. Yeah, exactly. And uh that wasn't scripted. I guess he actually did that, and they were like, Okay, we're gonna, yeah, we gotta keep that. But yeah, I don't think real Johnny Cash was ripping sinks off walls.

SPEAKER_00

It's funny. When I was watching that scene, uh, somebody else who did construction, I'm like, where's the water? If he actually ripped that off, water be shooting up everywhere. And what they did is I even when I watch that scene, I go, Oh, you can hear they put the sound of running water, even though there is none, because it's a fake sink. I'm like, they put you could hear they added the sound of water, which you don't see any water, just to make it seem more accurate. Yeah, yeah. Movie magic, baby.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they weren't expecting them to rip it off, so they didn't think they needed it connected to anything, and then they're like, Oh, we'll just work around it, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but it was a cool scene, man. When you're at the you're at Whip's end, wit's wit's end, you're you're gonna do something like that, you know. Um, so he's oh he kind of overdoes it with the I've took for my names are oh, they sing it ain't me, baby. Kind of he's he's doing a lot of the guitar stuff now. Um, at some points I thought he got a little carried away with the but doesn't matter, I loved it still. And his parents are in the audience, and guess what? Dad not approving. Oh weird, wow, hasn't come around yet. Wow, exactly. Uh then he introduces June to his parents and little girls. The wife comes up, stay clear of my children. I wonder, I wonder if that actually happened because I actually think something like that could have happened.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, for sure. I mean, she's sitting at home this whole time wondering.

SPEAKER_00

Well, not wondering, she knows, she knows, yeah, yeah. The women know, man.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. And then, like laying awake at night, and then you see them in public, it's coming out. Yeah, no way, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I thought that was a pretty like who shit moment is taking care of my children, not my husband, my children.

SPEAKER_02

You know, it's like yeah, you've already probably had my husband, but you can't have my kids, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You can, yeah, exactly. Don't even uh so then now they're in Vegas, he's now he's become Johnny Cass, got the sign, and and then he walks her back to the room thinking June, and that's it. They make out, and we are one hour and I took another thing. We are one hour and 17 minutes into the movie when they finally become a couple, yeah. And then they're in bed, phone rings, it's June's daughter. So that's right back to reality. Oh, you have a daughter, I have a kid, but you know what I mean. I'm still married, and he goes starting fantasy. Yeah, he he pops pills. She sees him, she she feels guilty, everybody's guilty. Oh, that's god fucking eh, and they're because they just got a lot of junk to clear up in their lives, man, before they can get together in the real way, and you know, it's painful, even to watch it was painful, honestly, because you're because these are real people that went through this, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Right, yeah, you want to be like, guys, just snap out of it and get together already, you know. Like, what are we doing?

SPEAKER_00

Like, just so many obstacles, yeah, my god, you know, and over years, over the course of years, yeah. Like, my god, it's painful to watch going, guys. You're in love. I get it. Maybe uh you shouldn't it happen this way at bad foundations. Clear up your lives and get together. This shouldn't take this long. That's what I kept thinking. Johnny shows up late looking out of sorts, he's drugged up, collapses, tour canceled. Ben gives him take it home, and June comes to take care of him. And I'm telling you, June is I I think Johnny Cash is probably dead in the 1960s without June Carter. I really do.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Um, I agree. Um, and also it's like you don't do that for somebody like sit bedside while they're getting over all these drugs, whatever, you know, like unless you love that person.

SPEAKER_00

Oh beyond, yeah, that's like and you're June Carter, you're like a star in your own right, yeah, you know. So yeah, she's she's like some kind of angel that that he needed. Uh, or I'm telling you, he said, I read watching an interview with the actual Johnny Cash. He said, I don't know what year this would have been, but he said back in the day he was drinking a case of beer a day and popping up to a hundred pills a day. Damn, a day, you know, the uppers to keep you up and then the downers to bring you down. You know, like that guy's body, you know, he lived to 71, man.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the uh again, that doc I just watched with the amphetamines are what he started on, and uh one of his buddies was like, Yeah, like amphetamines, like you did like one or maybe two, you know, in a day to kind of get you through. And they were like, Immediately, he was taking hundreds a week, you know. Just he was like, and his buddy was like, I don't know how you ever come back from that. You know, a normal dose is one to two a day, and you're taking hundreds, like it's a miracle he lived to be 71, really.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was a hard 71 years. Uh times in there, yeah. So at this point, she June's getting fed up, she flosses them down. Uh, and then they kind of split and then cut to June at home practicing, singing, playing Ring of Fire, which you know, I guess she wrote uh based on this. Yep. And uh still my favorite Johnny Cash song, by the way. And um, yeah, yeah, I love that. Even as a kid, I remember that's one song I do remember as a kid. Uh my dad would play Ring of Fire. I didn't know who Johnny Cash was. I know you know it was him, but right he's interrogated at the airport, arrested back home to quote unquote beleaguered wife. And what is she goes? Your dad said, Now you won't have to work so hard to make people think you've been in jail. Yeah, that hurts, man.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, dad, even from a distance, just throwing daggers at him.

SPEAKER_00

He's I mean, cuts to the cuts to the very oof, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That that's on a couple levels that hurts.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, but it is weird that he cultivated that image having never been to jail, right? But he was like this rebel who you know, and and but he'd never been there. Yeah, that's just interesting. Yeah, uh oh, and then she left, and then he tells the wife she left the tour in Vegas, and she goes, Oh, well, that explains everything, doesn't it? She knows that's it. Once she got busted, she left. Yeah, uh, he's hang now. He's hanging pictures of June. Like, what the fuck are you doing, bro? Come on, man. I was that's one scene. That's one scene. I'm like, I'm we didn't need this. Yeah, you know what I mean.

SPEAKER_02

It really happened, it did really happen. Yeah, I heard uh uh I think Roseanne, their daughter, said that she remembered it.

SPEAKER_04

Wow, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But he was like so far gone at this point, he didn't know what the fuck was going on. That's true. 100 pills a day, get out of here.

SPEAKER_00

That's wild. Yeah, and again, that's they say that's why they split the drugs. It wasn't June, it was the drugs right in real in real life. Yeah, they brawl kids, she drives off with the girls, cut to one year later. All right, what happened to that one year? That's kind of weird, which is one year of nothingness. Now they're in Nashville. He's a drunkard. He's he's living with Wayland Jennings.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I was a big fan of Wayland. Not I don't know a ton of his songs, but I always liked his look. And do you know his story? Waylon Jennings' story.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, in terms of with Buddy Holly. Oh, with uh he flipped the coin. Is this the coin flip?

SPEAKER_00

It wasn't a coin flip. Buddy Holly and them they played some small whatever. Um was it maybe it was a coin flip. Uh, but anyhow, the plane could only hold one of them, either Wayland or Buddy. But I'm pretty sure it was Buddy said, Hey man, I'm just not feeling well. Can I just take the plane and win? It goes, okay, but I hope you die. It's the last thing he said to Buddy Holly. And Wayland Jennings kept that in his that affected him his whole life. And he also had problems with drugs and alcohol. And I remember listening to Wayland Jennings' uh interview. Again, he had a wife that was just peace support him, beat with, and she they wanted him to go to rehab. He goes, No, I gotta handle this myself. And he goes, We went off to a cabin, me and my wife, and I just cleaned up on my on my own. Took me a while, but that's how I had to do it, and that's how I did it. That's how Wayland Jennings got clean, yeah. But again, with the love of a woman, you know what I mean? Don't do it by himself.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, I did know that. Uh I did know that story about uh Buddy Holly.

SPEAKER_00

Um Jesus Christ, wild, wild man, crazy. Yeah. Last thing he says, I hope you die, and the guy fucking dies. It's crazy. Yeah, uh, he's a drunkard whaling plane, phone's disconnected, he's broke. He goes to visit June at her house. He looks like shit. He proposed he proposes, and she's like, start loving yourself so we can get back to work. In other words, snap out of it, fuck head.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, snap out of it. What are you doing?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, seriously. What the fuck, bro? You got everything in front of you, would you knock it off already? Uh in real life, that had to be so frustrating. Like, dude, you're Johnny Cash. Fucking A, bro. You know, come on already. Sorry.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, dude. Um, I mean, he's she goes, What did you walk here? And he's like, I'm on a love walk for you, dude. I was like, Oh boy, uh, he's gone. This guy's gone. Love walk.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Can you make take a can you take a romance Uber back home, get out of my face?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, can you can you clean up so we can book a tour and make some money? What is going on? Honestly, there's business too. She goes, I got bills, man. Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, this guy's out of hand, dude.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know if it uh if it's true and actually was said, or it's just a movie thing, but start loving yourself so we can get back to work. I will say that I think that was the biggest problem Johnny Cash had in his entire life, his entire life. I just don't think he ever really loved himself. I I we could talk about that at the end of this thing, but I think that's the crux of all this stuff that he was going through. Yep, and went through all the way to the end. Uh, he walks home in the rain. At the time I'm watching, it's raining, water's coming out. Like, oh, is this his baptism? I thought, oh, is this gonna be a big and it wasn't? Oh it was just rain.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, no, it's just yeah, just bad weather.

SPEAKER_00

It's got a big moment in the movie, and like, ah no, it's just rain.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, no symbolism, just just rain.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. Then he passes out, wakes up to the sound of construction, and just buys the house. Seemed a little corny, but okay, yeah, we'll go with it. But he did buy he did buy a big spread in Hendersonville, which is uh where Taylor Swift is also from. Um interesting, yeah, and uh that's where he lived. I think that's where I think he ended up moving back to Virginia. I don't even know exactly, but he did have a big spread in Hendersonville, and uh the parents come to visit same old disapproving dad, not as big as you know, whatever his name is. Uh Jack Benny. Yeah, okay. Thanks, Dad.

SPEAKER_02

Totally unneeded, but sure.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, yeah, exactly. And then, but now June's family's there, and the the tractor, and it's Thanksgiving, and June comes with her family. Dad puts puts J oh calls him Jr. Of course, at the table. As the table, Johnny finally asked what's he thinks about the house. Does it approve? Can't approve. Yeah, Jack's not here. Where were you? And then he's finally goes, Uh, where were you? You know what I mean? He finally asked his dad, Where were you? Yeah, you know, that ain't I ain't his father. I'm the younger brother.

SPEAKER_01

I was 10 asshole.

SPEAKER_00

You know, like there's no way that kid shouldn't. There's no way a kid should ever have been left alone. I grew up, my dad had power sauce, and the i used to hold the boards while he would do carpentry. I never got close to one when I wasn't when he wasn't around, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So this is on this, this is on the father, think too you know, and then and that's why he that's why he put his son down because he he didn't want to take the guilt for himself, so right. I you know, but wow. Uh yeah, I never yeah, I never had talent. I did the best I could with what I had. Uh, you got this big old empty house. He's not wrong, nothing, you know. He I did the best with what I had. He's like basically you have talent, fucking quit wasting it, is what he's saying. Uh nothing children you don't see, nothing. Tractor stuck in the mud. Okay, he did see his family, not as much, I guess. Probably maybe, but anyway, goes to the contractor. You should go down there, he's mixed up, and then she goes, Mom, I can't go down there. She goes, You already are down there. Mom knows. No, yeah. Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? This is it. Go. She rescues him from the water. He said, You should have left me. He wakes up, no pills withdrawal, sees the pill dealer. Oh, I from what I understand, the parents, June's parents, actually did you know, ward off the drug dealer with a gun when they tried to go to his house.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, also one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie. Get your points and out of here. I was like, that's got a giant case of drugs like this guy's got a shotgun bigger than he is, and then the wife's got one too.

SPEAKER_00

That's my kind of parenting right there, man.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like you are you've been through too much with this guy to uh have you just started all over again. Fuck off.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. So he wakes up, June's there. He's got the she's got fresh fruit, he's starting to look better. Yeah, yeah, he feels guilty because of Jack. Jack was the good one, still going through that. Yep, and she's like, God has given you a second chance to do the right thing. They go to church. He looks he's starting to look healthy. He's becoming Johnny, he's becoming Johnny Cash. Yeah, he reads he leads. Oh, then he reads the fan letters. Lots of them are from County jail. Yep, and uh, I wonder how you know true that is. Like, were these guys in jail inspired by Johnny Cash because of his image? Because uh he seemed to be uh um uh a rebel against authority. I I just wonder what the connection was.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I don't know exactly, but the Folsom wasn't the first jail he played.

SPEAKER_00

It wasn't, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he had played like you know, whatever. Uh I don't want to say the local jail, but he had done, you know, like smaller jails and stuff like that. So he had a bit of a rep, uh, you know, how prison all that stuff spreads like that. So uh that's yeah, yeah. So um, yeah, this certain it certainly wasn't the first time he had done it.

SPEAKER_00

So I wonder why Folsom became the big one, the one that just everybody knows.

SPEAKER_02

Wonder why I think it's because he saw that in the in the um when back in his time in Germany, and he saw whatever that movie was and was like, I'm I like I want to play that jail.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, that's right. I forgot. Yeah, all the way back to Folsom. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right. That one in particular, yeah. And now he's like literally he is the man in black now. Yes. I mean, it's it's it's come, you know, he's he's he's the guy. Yep. Uh uh he proposes a show. Oh, he proposes a show to his agents, and they're like, the world's changed. Dylan's gone electric. Yeah, uh, looks like you're going to. Oh, that's another line. Twice they said early on. Why are you dressed in black? You look like you're going to a funeral. Maybe I am.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I like the way he said that. Wasn't like maybe I am. It's like, yeah, maybe I am. I he underplayed it. Like walking Phoenix can be an overactor because he's so good, and so the roles he plays are so, but man, that guy can also just underact and just play it like so real. I didn't he's he's he's one of my favorite actors of all time, for sure. And this is my favorite role by him. And I loved him in uh um Play Vader, and I'm not gonna lie, I didn't even like that movie that much. I thought the movie was overrated with all the people I love, Ridley. Uh um, like we were talking about uh Russell Crowe, and I'm like, eh, but his he stood out, yeah. And then well, he's like January 13th, I'll be at Folsom. Listen to Taves. You don't like him, toss him. Cut to the beginning where we started off. The music's playing, the people are going out, yeah. And they want him to sing spiritual songs, not songs to remind them they're in prison. You think they forgot? Yeah, it's great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that the whole end sequence is so great with the warden and oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And by the way, the warden, the guy who played the warden, that is James Keach, the producer.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, interesting.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, who's brothers with Stacy Keach, by the way? Do you know Stacy Keats is?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, remind me.

SPEAKER_00

I know the name, but he he was Mike Hammer on Mickey Splain's Mike Hammer TV show, but he was also the narrator for um America's What Most Wanted and all that, and like you know, you know, American Greed? Yep, yep. He's that fucking perfect voice for that stuff. Yeah, long Stacy Keats, long, long career as an actor, voiceover guy. Yeah, but and I and I and I didn't know this, but their father was a a well-known actor too. Uh James Keats to Stacey Keats' father, Stacy Keats Sr. I don't know much about him, but he was also in there in the he's you know, he comes from the business of the Keats family. Um, but yeah, then they cut to the concert, and uh apparently I I heard this somewhere, a Joaquin Phoenix being, I don't know if he's a method actor or whatever you want to call it, but I guess he wanted the extras who were playing prisoners at the concert. He didn't, I guess while they were filming, he didn't allow them to eat or go to the bathroom because he wanted them to be just kind of agitated. So he he I don't know how completely true this is, but I heard that that was one of the things that he did on set, and uh and then we could finish off the story here, then we get to a few other trivia things. But Torbus in the rain, June sleeping, he wants to get married, she rebuffs him again. Uh I did this the absolute persistence of him I just thought was was mind-boggling too. Because at some point I'd be like, fuck it, fuck this, you know what I mean? No matter what. Yeah, and uh I I was impressed, you know. Just I don't know. The only place you're allowed to the only place you're allowed to talk to me is on stage. Cut to ring of fire. He invites her over to sing with him, and that's where you propose. And then that is true. He did propose on stage in Canada, yeah. Yeah, that's right, that's right. In Canada, will you marry me? Okay, back of the house, his dad's there. Yeah, they've kind of patched things up a little bit. We get to see a little bit of the soft side of the dad, and that was that was kind of a cool way to end the movie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um one of my favorite lines I don't know, one of my favorite scenes is with the warden when we go back and it's at the end and and that whole thing, and and you see him performing in front of the you know uh uh the prisoners and everything. But before he goes back on stage, he's looking at the glass of water and he says to uh the warden says to him something along the lines like maybe you and your wife should just play some spirituals or whatever. And he says, She's not my wife. I keep asking, and she keeps saying no. Great, just a great little like one line, one offer kind of like I just thought it was great. I keep asking saying no, uh but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I it it just blows my mind how much time it took for them to finally just become just to get together, and you know, the shame of it all is that didn't save him. The guy the guy was on drugs his entire life, he was on and off drugs his entire life. Uh kids couldn't save him. June the fact that and she stuck by him his entire life through all that shit, man. And uh it makes you just wonder like, dude, what the fuck, bro? You you clean up for a couple years and then you he hurt his back or something. He takes him now, he's cooked again. That's it, you know. I mean, that that's just let's be honest, it's an addictive personality, but damn, his whole life. I think last time he went to rehab was like in the late 80s.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I wouldn't have been surprised if you said later than that, to be honest. Um I mean, you gotta imagine like imagine that feeling of being like, Oh, my back hurts, like give me and the you like see the the pills in your hand, and you're like, Yeah, I'm gonna take these. Like, you wouldn't, there's no moment of like, dude, I definitely shouldn't do this, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. He just it he could not just get a just just could not get off the drugs for you know, yeah. And like I said, when you watch him, it's funny. Last last we did murder by death last time when Peter Falk was in there. We were talking about Columbo, which I've been binging. And who was a guest on on Columbo? Uh uh Johnny Cash. Yeah, he played a country's country music singer, and he was fantastic. Yeah, he's a unique guy. The way he talks, he's such a there's such a gentle soul about the way that guy talks. Um and when you watch clips of the actual Johnny Cash and June Carter, you can just tell he's so madly in love with her. It's like the cutest little couple you ever saw. It's just amazing he struggled with just keeping himself clean his whole life because he he just was seems like a such a nice guy. You know what he needed? Just like Elvis, he Johnny Cash needed an older brother, which unfortunately he lost. Well, he needed somebody to get everybody away. No, no, no, we're going, we're going hiking for two weeks. Nobody, no calls, nothing. Yeah, that's exactly that's exactly what Elvis had, and Elvis didn't have didn't have that either. Yeah, that's what they that's what each one of those guys needed. Just just an older brother, go, uh-uh, everybody gone. Yeah, fuck off. Everybody's out, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That that's he was just kind of left to his own devices his whole life, and and you know, like June could only do so much, but man, uh these country guys, most of all of them were just such difficult lives. George Jones, you know what I mean? They're just such they're such boozers, you know. Jerry Lee Lewis was uh it out of his mind. Mary's his cousin, she's 13. Like, what the fuck are you doing, bro?

SPEAKER_02

Whoa, whoa, yeah, jeez.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh uh, go ahead. No, I was just gonna say one of the other things I love about Joaquin's performance is uh when they're on stage together, he's like, he's not even looking at the crowd, he is just looking at her while they're singing, you know. And some of the old clips that I've seen, very similar. I'm sure this was exaggerated for the movie, but um, I mean, just the infatuation, you know, that he has with her, I just thought was uh they just they just nailed it. Joaquin did it just just so well.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, completely. Uh apparently when they were rehearsing, um um Joaquin and and Reese, you know, they were both actors, but they were never they were not singers, they weren't used to singing. And and uh they said that they were both really self-conscious and nervous in rehearsals, and they didn't get along so much when they were rehearsing for six months. They were they were they kind of I don't want I don't I don't know if it's bickering or whatever, but they they were both struggling with their own insecurities. But they said once it came to shooting, and now they're they they they said they became kind of codependent on each other on set on set, and it shows. I mean, they're they could they could go on tour and to do a concert together and it would sell out, it would be that's how good they were, yeah. Just doing like even Cash or American Classics, they're they're wonderful. Uh I I always wonder when I see like Joaquin, maybe more than Reese because she just did the auto-tune thing, but auto heart. I always wonder, does he pick up a guitar now? Does he is he like wow? This is a whole new side of me. Not right just for fun, just at home. Does he enjoy it? Does he you know I because he's never you know played it again in a movie, or you know, he's not one of those guys joining a band like some other actors. Uh yeah, yeah. But I it may I always wonder, I go, after he was so good at this, this is certainly a talent that he could explore if he wanted to.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, oh, I'm sure he has one. You know, he probably picks it up from time to time. I mean, why I'm you know, if nothing else, just to be nostalgic for playing the role, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was so good. Um it's uh it's interesting. There's a play called you've heard the million dollar chord quartet, right?

SPEAKER_02

What is it?

SPEAKER_00

It's called the million dollar quartet. It's a it's a phrase, it's also a play. So back Sun Records days back in the day. This is an actual event, it's not unfortunately not recorded, but uh um who's who's the fours? Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Johnny Cash, and who's the other guy who always Carl Perkins? So the four of them were the you know the big the big cheeses at Sun Records, right? One night Jerry Lee Lewis was recording some piano for Carl Perkins song at Sun Records. Elvis Presley happened to pop in, and they're like, Hey, let's call Johnny Cash. They called Johnny Cash, he comes down, and they had an impromptu jam session for I guess it lasted a couple hours. The four of them in Sun Records, just for the four of them. That's called the Million Dollar Quartet. They ended up making a play out of it. Now, on one of the cruise ships I was working, Norwegian cruise line. Uh, they have you know, cruise lines always have production shows, dancing, singing, and some of them are just fantastic, and usually they're like 45 minutes, you know, really nice, well packaged shows. They had million-dollar quartet on one of those on one of the ships I was on. I'm like, Well, I gotta go see this, yeah. And dude, it was 90 minutes. That's you know, that's a full-on production show, right there. Like something you'd see at play go to a theater. Yeah, it was standing ovation at the end, by the way. All four of the guys played all their own instruments, sang their own, were phenomenal. And remember the the guy playing Jerry Lee. Keep in mind, you're playing Jerry Lee Lewis, you gotta be able to play piano like this, yeah. And this guy, and he had the curly hair, and yeah, and I'm like, my god, this guy is killing it. Anyhow, after the show, I was one of the comedians on the on the ship, of course. After the show, now this is in the big theater. Now, on this particular cruise line, they have dueling pianos in the in the in the club where I do stand-up, and really nice, like a seat's about 250, maybe 300. And dueling pianos is like it's the hottest thing on the ship at night, you know. I'm sure these guys just kill it, everybody packs in anyhow. I'm in there. Usually I get to know the guys, and I'll go up and sing a song with the dueling piano guys. Oh, nice. The dude on stage who's playing Jerry Lewis, he comes in. I'm like, hey, dude, I just saw you on stage. You go, Oh, hey man, how you going, bro? And and and and I told him I was a comedian. We just started talking, we were drinking all night, having a blast.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And and he got up and he played a song with the dueling piano guys, and everybody saw him in the theater, so it's like a big fun moment, you know, for everyone. And then cut to like four or five months ago, I was doing a show with Steph Tolif. You know Steph Tollif, the comedian. Yeah, yeah, she's super funny, man. Super funny. Uh, she's big time now. I mean, she's Netflix, she's big time. Yeah, but anyhow, this guy, I see this guy backstage, and he's like, Johnny, I'm like, hey, what's up, man? I go, he, I go, I'm thinking, how do I know this guy? How do I know this guy? How do I know this guy? It was um, it was him, it was the piano player guy.

SPEAKER_03

That's right.

SPEAKER_00

From the I go, I go, oh dude, what's happening? He goes, Yeah, he it's Steph Tole's um um it's Steph Toliv's boyfriend, now fiance. I go, oh dude, cool. I go, I I go, his name is uh I forget his name, McDonald's, something uh Jefferson McDonald. He's Christopher McDonald's uh nephew, the guy from Happy Gilmore.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, shooter McGavin.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and he looks just like and he looks just like him. Wow, and he now he's he's touring now. He does stand-up comedy, and he also does like his own one-man show, and he's killing it, you know. But of all the things, yeah, but he was he was but this thing, the million-dollar quartet, this is the best show I've ever seen on a ship, dude. I felt like I was at a I feel like I was watching a Broadway play, yeah and uh it just makes you go imagine being the quintessential fly in the wall when these four dudes on their rise, they're not superstars yet, on their rise, or if they're just jamming together for nobody's benefit but their own.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. That's I I'm gonna look more into that. I don't know how I haven't heard of that, and if I did, I forgot. But also, this happened at a recording studio, and nobody just thought to hit record. Exactly. I wonder if they were like, I wonder if the four of them were like, you know what, let's not record anything, no pressure, let's just just having just having fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. You know, million-dollar quartet, yeah. I don't know if it was on Broadway of like a Broadway player or what, but I mean, it is one of the best, it's the best ship show I've ever seen on a ship, and I've seen some really good show ships, right? Really good shows on ships, but this was and again, like it was twice as long as most theater shows are on ships. It was a huge production thing, and they all play their own instruments, all sang their own songs, you know. And it looks like in this movie. I mean, everybody was great, like you said. I could have I would have liked to have seen more of Elvis, young Elvis, and more of uh Jerry Lee and how they came to be.

SPEAKER_02

And yeah, that era driving themselves to shows, you know, like it's like you're doing stand-up, you all get in a fan, or you all piling somebody's car, it's my turn to drive, and you go just do a show, and man, it's four four four young dudes, all who went on to become superstar legends, you know, in a in a car, just go to staying at a holiday inn and you know, somewhere in the middle of Georgia or something like that, or whose turn it is to buy gas, and I don't have any exactly you know, like struggling to afford it, you know.

SPEAKER_00

That's what I mean, yeah. Yeah, uh just just wild. What a wild time that had to have been.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um, another thing I read, I was trying to find it. Um in one of the um one of the things I saw uh when they're on the bus, I believe, Carl Perkins is asleep and there's a lit cigarette in his hand, and Johnny Cash walks by and puts the cigarette out. I didn't even like notice it when I first watched it. Carl Perkins died in when his house burned down because he fell asleep with a cigarette lit in his hand and it burned his house down.

SPEAKER_00

You're kidding.

SPEAKER_02

And I guess that was a little like uh I don't know the I don't know how you would even word what without it is exactly homage or yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Just like uh, you know, yeah, it this has nothing to do with with the movie, but you know, I've been doing this Colombo thing, yeah. And uh one of the key villains, Jack Cassidy, he's the of uh of David Caffety, gate David Caffety's cavity, yeah, David, David and Sean Cassidy's father. Yeah, he was an actor, he was successful. He was jealous of their careers, I guess, because they were the pop idols that he always wanted to be. A little bit married to Shirley Jones, but they were split. But anyhow, he had an apartment down in Font Fountain. Not pointing like people. Oh, yeah, yeah. Literally, probably probably a mile from where I'm sitting right now. And uh, you know, you know, it's like I think it was he he filmed an episode of Columbo, and uh he was like maybe the best. He did three episodes of Columbo, and he was like maybe the best villain. He was phenomenal, uh, really, really great at his role. But anyhow, he was he this night he called his Shirley Jones, his ex-wife. See, she wanted to come over. She said no, fell asleep with a with a cigarette in his hand, his apartment burned down, he died, you know, at like 40 some years old, like like crazy. Um these guys led such hard lives, man.

SPEAKER_01

It's but also like how deep were you sleeping? Your house is on fire, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

He didn't this thing's asleep, they passed out.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah. They were deep. Um, all right. Last thing I want to show you too. I dug this out. This is the I don't know if you can see this Time magazine for the cash dive. This is the original one. I bought it. Yeah, I've had it framed, it's still in pretty damn good shape. Oh shit, dude. What year would that have been? 2003, September 22nd, 2003.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, damn, it was three dollars and 95 cents.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, that I didn't know, but but you really were a fan.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Big fan. I've had that uh since it happened.

SPEAKER_00

So wow, that's interesting, man. His uh his wife was it who who died first because they died within four months of each other.

SPEAKER_02

She went and then he went.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. And he said, I think he was working with Rick Rubin at the time. Yeah, he goes, he goes, keep me busy because otherwise I'll die. Yeah, if I have nothing to do, you know, without June. Yeah, and uh it's funny. You like you said, when you watch the two of them, the the real people, man, he just the way he looks at her, yeah. You know, he just I mean, it was madly, madly in love, yeah. And and uh it's it's it's a shame there was he had to go through so much in his life just to keep be happy. But but I think when he was happy, he was super happy. I just think he went into dark places, yeah. And he could not help himself to go, and she couldn't help him either. Yeah, you know, but you know, uh most of his kids have had very successful careers, yeah. Um Roseanne Cash, very successful, another uh kid, I forget the other names, uh, but they've all they've all seemed to do pretty well for themselves. And uh their one the one June Carter and and uh the one kid they had together, what's his name again? Uh John Carter. Was that his name? Yeah, yeah, he seems like he's a very cool guy. You know, I've heard I've heard him in interviews and stuff, and he seems to have his head on square, and he's you know, not bitter about anything like that, uh you know, just really happy. Like I in other words, I think they were great parents, yeah. Uh to his kids, to their kids. Like I said, you you feel bad for the the original wife, but it they just married too young, and she ended up marrying again and lived a long life. And like you said, she wrote a book, so you know, all's well that ends well, I guess. Kind of a thing, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And again, yeah, marry too young, and just they're just complete opposites, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00

Like, uh it's you outgrew each other, you outgrow each other, yeah. Like, dude, this is yeah, and then like everybody should take that 90% of people marry too young. You don't know who you are at 21.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yeah, yeah, it's it's crazy.

SPEAKER_00

And then for some people it works, but I'm telling you, for most people, you just you change. That's all. Take just date, you're hopefully anyway.

SPEAKER_02

Hopefully, you change. Jesus, you're the same person. That's true, too. Yeah, hey Lord, absolutely. Yeah, all right.

SPEAKER_00

So, on a scale, what we'll let's do our uh um our scale thing here, uh our grade, our letter grade. What would you give walk the line?

SPEAKER_02

I struggled with this one. I I will say I liked it less this time around than the first time I saw in the theater.

SPEAKER_00

Um, interesting, interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Even though I appreciated uh the performances more, uh, I mean, it's just it just absolutely just mind blowing uh to me. I'm gonna go with uh B. Interesting.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Uh I'll tell you why too. I thought there was too much one notey shit with the with Viv, the dad. I thought it dragged it like two hours and 28 minutes. That could have been, you know, we could have got that down to two flat. Um, and for me, I wanted to see um a little bit more of uh walk uh boy named Sue, uh his later career. You know, I understand this is just this era of his life, but uh you know, I go B for sure. Great movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm I it's funny. I was the same way as you. I I struggled parts of this first time I saw it, I'm like, I just loved it. I walked out going, Wawking Phoenix is the greatest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. Seriously, yeah. I and this this well second viewing did nothing to dissuade that feeling. Uh, there's so many moments in this movie that I thought, like I said, when he just goes, uh oh Johnny Cash, and he you're like, Oh, he's not sure yet. You know what I mean? I just thought that was so cool the way he did that. That little moment, yeah. Um uh and and and of course, uh Reese Witherspoon just well-deserved Oscar, one of the best performances I I've ever seen on so many levels. But like you, but like you, I'm like, okay, the dad hasn't aged. That's corny, right? The dad really, everything that comes out of the mouth has to be negative Nelly. I mean, yeah, uh the and and and Jennifer Goodwin. We don't get to see any of the real stuff there. Like you said, we're trying to get through a movie. Maybe they could have cut out, and I know it's the highlight of the movie, but maybe we didn't need to see the entire song. As cool as it was, for that for the sake of the story, that kind of elongated the movie. Uh, I like I said, I I don't know what scenes you would have cut out, but I don't know. The whole walking and the rain and just falling asleep, and now he's on the tractor. I I don't know. We got it, man. You're having problems, you're on pills. Let's let's you know, you you could uh you could even even done a voiceover after three years and several attempts. Johnny finally cleaned himself up. Cut to, you know, I mean, we could have done that, yeah, you know, just to get more in. Uh, but but but again, like you said, the there's so much good. I I uh I was debating B plus or A minus, but after talking about it, so I'm probably gonna go with a B plus two. Yeah, B plus highly recommend. I will definitely watch it again, but there are a few things that just could have been changed to make it even better.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, I yeah, I agree, man. Uh I'll just and here's the other thing, too, that I was thinking about quite a bit. If you miscast either one of these two, like don't cast who you cast, this whole movie could have been a fucking D. The whole thing hinges literally on these two. Um, so you know, just another testament to how great they both were for sure.

SPEAKER_00

I I swear to god, this sounds corny as hell. I almost felt like they both should have won Best Actor as a team, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

A team. There's no way she should have won, and he didn't win. You know what I mean? They were they were so perfect together.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I know, I know. Uh, the Oscars, man, they blow it, they blow it more, they blow it more than they but again.

SPEAKER_00

Again, I haven't seen Capote, and there's there's Philip Seymour Hoffman does not you do. You don't go, you know, you don't go well, he phoned it in. The guy's phenomenal.

SPEAKER_02

No, you're definitely gonna see that, and he is outstanding in that movie, he is very good. Um, I just thought Joaquin, like in a photo finish, uh, you know, if I'm remembering correctly, that's Joaquin. Come on, how can you beat this? Unbelievable.

SPEAKER_00

But also, without even seeing it, I feel like Capote's probably easier to play, yeah. Because he's a caricature. Hi, smoking over here, talking. And and if you think about it, Philip Seymour Hawksman's already kind of halfway there, he's already got the list, he's kind of looks like him. It's a natural, I feel like this role was more challenging to play without making it a parody, without making it goofy. Yeah, uh, you know, I just thought he hit all the right notes, and so, but I will see Capote.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's been a while, I don't remember it all, but uh all right.

SPEAKER_00

Well, we'll we have done it, we've closed it off, we have walked the line officially. Yeah, and I've done I've done my Johnny Cash impression at least four times, so that's good.

SPEAKER_03

Love it, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And so now it's my turn to choose a movie, and I'm gonna surprise, I think I'm gonna surprise the hell out of you with this one.

SPEAKER_02

You always do, though.

SPEAKER_00

I can't, I can't and it seems like it seems like during our podcast we've we've gone. Oh, let's try this movie next. This has nothing to do with this movie or anything we've done. I have no idea where this even came from. I'm gonna put it that way, aside from the fact that I wanted something completely different. Uh, and I don't know if you've all if you've seen this, but I'm gonna go with probably not, and that is the original Dracula 1931.

SPEAKER_02

Uh Bellalugosi. Yeah, I you don't need to tell me if you have or not. Uh, I don't uh okay. Wow, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

This this is gonna be a tough one for you, man. This is black and white.

SPEAKER_02

No, but this is um I this is my genre. I I love horror for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you do? Oh, okay. Yeah, I have no idea. I have no idea. Yeah, dude.

SPEAKER_02

I'm excited. Okay, that's a that's a cool one. Very good. Yeah, really.

SPEAKER_00

I was gonna wait till October for uh Halloween thing. I'm like, nah, let's just do it now. Yeah, I just for some reason just wanted to be in something completely different.

SPEAKER_02
