Hello and welcome to the We Should Move Here travels podcast. My name is Brittany.
JoshI'm Josh
Britand we are your hosts. We are not currently in Graz, Austria. Um, we are doing this pod from home right now, mainly because when we were in Graz, the ceilings were just too high for us to feel comfortable with how the sound would turn out. So, we are doing this from home.
JoshYeah. Like you said, high ceilings, faulted ceilings in our Airbnb there, so we're just gonna get a ton of echo. Yeah. And plus we had an extra day before we got back, so we thought we'd kind roll in our travels back and Austria all into this episode, so.
BritYeah.
JoshYeah,
Britit was an amazing trip. Mm-hmm. So if you've been following along, you know that we went to the Netherlands, Belgium, uh,
JoshAugsburg.
BritGermany and Austria.
JoshYep.
BritAnd so this was our last stop.
JoshYeah. Of a very long but very fun trip.
Brit31 days. Yeah. Without my cats. I don't know how I survived, but here we are.
JoshIt's hard to imagine how they survived'cause they've been glued to us ever since we've been back. Now.
BritOh my gosh. Oreo has been sleeping with me every single night. Like he has not left my side. He actually is meowing right now, so if you hear him, we apologize, but I mean, he's just, he just wants to be with mom and dad.
JoshYeah.
BritSo
Joshhe thinks we left him again.
BritOh no, no. So we stayed in Graz the entire time that we were there.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritSo we were there for six days.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd then we ended up taking a train from Graz to Vienna, and then we flew home from Vienna. Mm-hmm. So we were only in Vienna for one night, so we definitely did not explore at all. We stayed at an airport hotel that did not have a/c and it was hotter than hell, but we survived that as well. Um, but Graz was stunning.
JoshOh, so gorgeous. From the second we got on the train from Augsburg to come to Graz
Britmm-hmm.
JoshWe were just blown away by the scenery. Now I was. Leading up to coming to Graz, I was all hyped for the train ride from Augsburg.'cause we were supposed to go directly south from Augsburg into the Alps and then a train ride all through the Alps on the way. But apparently there was some maintenance that needed to be done because of some weather that had come up. So we had to take a separate route, which actually took us all the way north through Berlin to Vienna and then down to Graz.
BritYeah. It was a long travel day.
JoshMm-hmm. Very long travel day. But we still get, did get to see plenty of mountains, beautiful scenery.
BritOh my gosh. On the way in from Vienna to Graz. Mm-hmm. The mountains were stunning. Mm-hmm. Beautiful.
JoshYeah, I think that section was two and a half, maybe three hours. But it flew by because of all the, the scenery that was going on.
BritYeah.
JoshI, I took so many pictures and videos, so, and'cause it was such a long day, I had looked up, I think in Vienna how much it was for a business class seat to go the rest of the way. And it was only 30 euros for the two of us to go the rest of the way. So it's like, heck yeah. And so we had those kind of singular seats, kind of like what we're sitting in now with recliners and
Brityeah, it was nice.
JoshYeah, it was super nice.
BritWe were living the life on that train.
JoshOnly if business class flights cost$30 to upgrade. Oh my
Britgosh. Hey, if any, any, um, airlines wanna sponsor us. You know, you can do that. We'll accept that. Totally.
JoshAbsolutely. Give us, give us at least some economy plus seats, at least this, uh, economy, traveling, you know, it's nice on the pocketbooks, but for, for this 30-year-old back, you know, it's been rough since we've been back. We've already, we've been back five days and we've already gone to three yoga classes.
BritYeah.
JoshAnd my back is just getting back into the way it's supposed to be.
BritOh, mine is not. Mine is so off. It's bad.
Joshbut we did get to do some yoga while we were in Graz.
BritWe did.
JoshYep. We went to hotspot Yoga and Graz.
BritYes, yes.
JoshOh my gosh.
BritHotspot was amazing. I really loved it. Mm-hmm. However. It was much hotter than we were used to. So, um, they did the Bikram series. Mm-hmm. And we did Hot 90, so it was, uh, 26 poses, and you go through them twice and it starts out in a room that is 104 degrees with a humidifier.
JoshYeah.
BritAnd it was really hot.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritIt was, yeah.
JoshIt was much warmer than we're used to. Our, um, yoga three that we do here in Neenah, Wisconsin starts out at like 94, 95, sometimes 96, but right in that range. And then it gets hotter from there. But, you know, just up to like 1 0 2, 1 0 3 max usually, and it's dry heat. You know, they, they have a dehumidifier going sometimes if it's too humid in there.
BritYeah.
JoshBut this, like you said, 104 degrees humidifier, we walked in and we both just looked at each other like, oh no.
BritBut we did it twice while we were there. Did, I was proud of us for, for going back mm-hmm. A second time. Even though the first time was so fucking hot.
JoshYeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, and we had had a break through Augsburg where we didn't do any yoga and we were just kind of getting over a little bit of like a flu sickness thing and we were both still suffering from that a little bit in Graz.
BritYeah.
JoshSo it definitely, I mean, physically helped.
BritOh, for sure.
JoshBoth, I mean, the sickness and our bodies. So
BritI definitely felt that I needed to sweat and boy did I sweat.
JoshOh my goodness. Yeah. It's. Doing yoga in a different country was such a new experience for us.
BritYeah. It was really terrifying at times. but also I think we grew within our yoga practice by doing this. Mm-hmm. Because we are so used to our routine mm-hmm. The classes that we go to, the instructors that we take, and to do something that is so out of your comfort zone.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritLike yoga in another country. I mean, we grew a lot in it and we did different things in the yoga classes than what we usually do, so,
Joshyeah. Yeah. Totally agree. I mean, I'm definitely not stronger coming back. You and me have talked our first couple days back we're like, oh man. cause we're typically three, four days a week. Consistently when we're here at home and there, you know, we were only able to get two times throughout the trip, except in Germany and both of us are like, oh man, gotta get these muscles going again. So that was, that was a fun part of Austria was doing the yoga there. But, uh, as far as Graz overall, when we first got there, uh, we were talking about the train, took the train in the tram system. We came, if you listen to the Augsburg Germany episode there, their public transportation kind of wonky. Everyone says it's underfunded that they need a bunch of. New systems put in place.'cause it's hard to navigate. Everything's always running behind. Everything's always breaking down. But in Austria
BritYeah,
Joshit's clockwork. It is going.
BritIt's so quick.
JoshOh, it's amazing.
BritYeah. I really appreciated the, uh, public transportation in Austria for sure. And from Graz to Vienna, it was just so easy.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritEvery train we took was so easy. I mean, we only took a couple in Austria in general, but even the tram that was super easy. We bought a, a week long, uh, pass to be able to use the trams. Mm-hmm. And we just hopped on and hopped off whenever we wanted. Like it was just, it was really easy. Yeah. We still did walk a lot and I would say that Graz. Is very walkable.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritUm, but if you wanna go outside of the city center and kind of explore outside of those areas mm-hmm. You might wanna hop on a tram.
JoshYeah, for sure. And I mean, where we stayed in our Airbnb. We were in. The center of Old Town. Yeah.
BritWe were,
Joshwe could not have been any more center of the old town. It was
Britprime location.
JoshIt was perfect. And it was the cheapest Airbnb we stayed in, which is insane.
BritThat's so wild. Yeah. I don't understand that. But I mean, it worked out really well. Mm-hmm. It felt like a nice Airbnb, it felt safe, it felt, you know, it wasn't too hot or too cold. We could just open the windows. Mm-hmm. Like, it, it was very easy to navigate how to get there, like
Joshmm-hmm.
BritJust
Joshthe, the one tram stop was like a hundred yards maybe from the door Yeah. Of the Airbnb. So, and like we already said, that was super easy. we did go out of, uh, old Town, uh, twice I think with the tram. we went to, uh, Eggenberg Castle, which is just a short. Tram ride and then a little walk down a road.
BritThat was a beautiful castle.
JoshOh my gosh. And we went on a, like an off day, I think it was Monday. And so they had an exhibit going that wasn't open, but, uh, so, but we still got to walk around.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshThe castle inside and then around the grounds
Britand the gardens.
JoshYeah.
BritWe saw a peacock.
JoshYeah. They have apparently a couple,
Britapparently I've never been on live television before
Joshthat has to stay in now. Um, they have at least one, maybe multiple free roaming peacocks that live on the grounds of Eggenberg Castle. And we didn't see one of'em until we were about to leave. And we looked over and it was this massive bird just walking down this path and we're like. What is that? And then you said, you're like, oh, that's a peacock. I was like, are they wild in Austria? And so we had to quick look it up on Google and no, it, it says, you know, that there's a, a couple that are, open living, free living on the grounds there.
BritOh my gosh. It was so beautiful though. Mm-hmm. And the entire, like, garden area was stunning. Mm-hmm. I, I really appreciated being able to just like, go through the gardens and the castle, even when the exhibit wasn't running
Joshright.
BritIt was really cool to just like explore that area.
JoshAnd it's right on. The foot of the mountains and the hills, right? Mm-hmm. Behind it. So it's a absolutely gorgeous backdrop. You and me kept on comparing it to, uh, some places that we had been in Colorado and Oh
Brityeah. It really felt like that. Mm-hmm.
JoshMm-hmm. And we especially thought it was like old town, kind of had the vibes of Aspen.
BritOh yeah.
JoshLittle
Britbit. It,
Joshit, it had a lot of shopping centers, right around where we were and this kind of upscale, bougie sort of feel
Britmm-hmm.
JoshTo it. but we didn't feel at all. Like we were priced out of the area.
BritNo, no. I would actually say the opposite. Mm-hmm. I think that it was very affordable. Like Oh, extremely. Our meals were very afford affordable. We had a couple that were outliers of that for sure. Mm-hmm. Like we, uh, we went to Miss Cho.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd we had the, what was it, six course meal, no. Four course meal with wine. Wine pairings mm-hmm. For each of us. And it was really delicious.
JoshYeah.
BritAlso very expensive, but it was like, it was our last dinner in Europe.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYou know, before we were leaving
JoshYeah.
BritFor this whole trip. Mm-hmm. So we were like, let's go do something special.
JoshYeah.
BritUm, so it was a really nice place. I loved it. There. We got,
Joshthat was delicious. Yeah.
Britthere was a cucumber salad. That was really good.
JoshFantastic. Yep.
BritThe sushi. We got two sushi rolls.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritUh, the fish and then there was the matcha dessert.
JoshYes.
BritUgh. So good.
JoshDelicious.
BritDefinitely recommend going here if you want like a special kind of meal.
Joshwould you say Ms. Cho was your favorite restaurant when, while we were in Gratz?
BritNo, actually.
JoshOh, okay. What was your favorite?
Britmy favorite was a restaurant that I am not going to try and pronounce. I will spell it. It's really long though. A-L-T-S-T-E-I-R-I-S C-H-E-S-C-H-M-A-N-K-E-R-L-S-T-U-B dash n. Have no idea how to pronounce that.
JoshIt's, it's on, it's on the website already in the Gratz, Austria section. So,
Britbut this was an incredible meal. Mm-hmm. We needed something that night really comforting, and it was,
Joshyeah.
Britwe got this pumpkin soup. I cannot even give words to how delicious this soup was. Mm-hmm. I mean, I'm looking at the picture of it, and it doesn't even, it doesn't do it justice. It is, it's so good. It has balsamic vinegar on top. Mm-hmm. It has, uh. I would assume like day old bread that they toasted, as like croutons in it.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritUm, it has the creamiest pumpkin base that I have ever tasted in my life. It was so delicious.
JoshSuper savory. uh, maybe just a hint of sweetness from the pumpkin. It was like you said, so comforting, so delicious. And this was our first, uh, schnitzel that we had had. Oh
Brityeah.
JoshYeah. Mm-hmm.
BritIt was.
JoshThat was delicious. Came with like a cranberry sauce where when you paired that with drizzling, a little bit of lemon on it.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshAnd it came with some, uh, poached potatoes, I believe.
BritOh, that was so good.
JoshIt was such a incredible pairing. And then, um, what is the, the other main dish we had with it,
Britwe got, uh, we also got the, the stew.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd it was with a stuffing kind of
JoshYeah.
BritBall.
JoshYep.
BritA ball of stuffing.
JoshYep.
BritSo delicious. All of it. Every single part of it was so good. Mm-hmm. I think the apple strudel, I had a, I had a stem
JoshOh yeah.
BritIn one of my bites. Mm-hmm. So. That. I dunno, that's probably a one off thing, but it wasn't my favorite Apple strudel that we had, but the rest of it was insanely good. Like you, if you're going to Graz, you have to go here. It's so delicious. Yeah. And get the pumpkin soup, that's a must.
JoshYou, you did want pumpkin soup, uh, frequently after we had it there. You you were like, oh my gosh, this is amazing.
BritWell, and its everywhere. Mm-hmm. It's everywhere. But none of the pumpkin soup that we had was as good as this one.
JoshYeah. fair enough. Where was your, uh, what was your best coffee?
BritOoh, the best coffee was, cafe Koenig. Hmm. That place was right by our Airbnb. It was literally right next door, and it was delicious. It was so good. I keep saying everything's so good again. But anyways, what was your favorite meal?
JoshOh, man, I, it was another place where we had so many good meals, I'm, I'm gonna have to, I'm gonna have to name two for you.
BritOkay.
JoshUh, the first one is going to be the. The Tega Cafe, I, I'm sure I'm saying that wrong, so I'm gonna spell that out. But it's F-R-E-I-B-L-I-C-K and then it's T-A-G-E-S-C-A-F-E. So it's, to get to it, you have to go inside of a shopping center and then take escalators all the way to the roof. And then they have a big outdoor seating patio and it's stunning view. Uh, we got pictures and videos up there.
BritOh my gosh. It's so beautiful.
JoshGorgeous. And we went up there twice, once for kind of. A little after lunch and one for more of a, a brunch meal.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshUm, everything we had there was fantastic. I would say my favorite was we had this wrap that was kind of like a curry curry wrap sort of thing. That was amazing. And then for brunch, you had ordered some french toast.
BritOh my gosh. You have to get this french toast. It was amazing.
JoshThose slabs were,
Britthey were thick, they were thick cuts of bread, and then they were just. They were caramelized, they were so sweet. Mm-hmm. They had a, it was a vanilla mousse
Joshmm-hmm.
BritOn the side to dip it in. Mm-hmm. And then a strawberry jam.
JoshYeah.
BritIncredible.
JoshYeah.
BritBest thing there, in my opinion, that we had,
Joshit was fantastic. You had ordered that, I had ordered, um, kinda like a, a Hollands sort of open breakfast sandwich thing, I believe, which was also delicious. But we went, havsies, and so I got to have your french toast as well, and yeah, that was fantastic. I took the, the strawberry jam and mixed it in with the mm-hmm. The vanilla dunked man. Mm-hmm. Stuffed my face. It was fantastic. But that, that'd be my first one and my second one that I. Would say was, uh, Gosser Brau.
BritOoh, yes.
JoshYep. Um, it is a brewery, a local brewery in Graz, Austria. Um, very well known, big producers of Austrian beer. And we had there some barbecue ribs with cole slaw and fries, which were
Britmm-hmm.
JoshDelicious. And then you ordered some chicken, which came in this massive
Britbucket. No, I ordered a salad and it said a chicken tender salad. Now when I. Think of a chicken tender salad. I think of, you know, greens a dressing. Mm-hmm. You know, maybe some salad stuff, fixins. Mm-hmm. And a couple chicken tenders. No, these chicken tenders were huge.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd then the salad had like beans and like potatoes. Mm-hmm. And a lot of really hearty kind of ingredients.
JoshYeah.
BritThat like, I did not expect it was delicious. I would order it again. Mm-hmm. However, I just didn't expect it. And then we went, halvsies these and the ribs. So good.
JoshYeah.
BritVery good. Yeah. Yeah.
JoshAnd then with that, we had, uh, a couple different beers, which were all delicious. They also had some schnapps
BritOh God.
JoshWhich we, we had seen, they were kind of at this big container behind the bar and we mm-hmm. Like, what's that? And so we kind of googled it, found out that they. Do their own schnapps there. And it's kind of used as a, a digestive similar to like a lemon cello in Italy. And we're like, oh, maybe we'll do that. But we had actually booked a table and we got there a little early. They didn't have it ready for us. We said, okay, we'll just set the bar. And we went through pretty much the whole meal at the bar, which was totally fine with us.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshAnd then the waitress was like, oh my gosh, table's available. And we're like, ah, this is fine. This is what we're used to.
BritYeah.
JoshAnd so then she brought us a, a couple shots of the schnapps and we tried that and.
BritIt was like moonshine. It was so fucking strong. I gave you most of mine. Mm-hmm. Because I couldn't do it, but my gosh, I took like, maybe a couple sips and I was feeling it immediately after. Yeah.
JoshIt's a big thing for schnapps in Austria.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshSo, uh, glad we got to experience that. And then we had this triple layer chocolate mousse dessert, which was really nice. It came in this little mason jar, half mason jar sort of thing. Um, that was really nice, but it was a lot of food. Mm-hmm. And it, and just filled us right up. Like you said, you're. Salad that you ordered. We split everything here. That salad you ordered was so hardy and I took a few bites of the potatoes and chicken, and I was stuffed after those ribs and fries as well, as well as the beer, which was amazing. I thought there was a lot of really good beer here. There was a lot of really good drinks.
BritThere was so much good beer. Yeah. Mm-hmm. We also went to another brewery at the end. It was Glock Brau, G-L-O-C-K-L Brau. And that was really delicious as well.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritWe did get a pumpkin soup there. Definitely wasn't as good as the other one, but I was just obsessed with the other one, so.
JoshMm.
BritMaybe I had poor judgment. I don't know. You had the lentil bowl. Mm-hmm. It was a curry lentil bowl.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd that was really delicious.
JoshYeah.
BritVery spice forward. Mm-hmm. If I'm remembering correctly. And then I had the roast beef. Was it roast beef?
JoshUm, was it No. Wasn't it duck?
BritNo, I would never order duck. I would never order roast beef though. So I don't know what I was thinking.
JoshI can't remember exactly what it was, but it was pretty decent.
BritYeah. I mean, I liked gosser brau more.
JoshMm-hmm. Yeah. Same, same. Uh, that place was a little more, it seemed kinda tourist driven. Yeah. The waiters were wearing lederhosen and kind of traditional clothing, which is fine. but we just, we didn't see that anywhere else.
BritYeah.
JoshSo. It just felt a little more touristy, we also, I wanna mention, we intentionally went to a place that was on the Michelin Guide. We did. Sometimes we accidentally go to places that are super high end, This time we intentionally went here.
BritYeah.
JoshWe booked a table ahead of time and went, uh, it was supposed to be really good food for the price. Uh, I'm gonna spell out M-O-H-R-E-N-W-I-R-T. And we had some stew there, uh, fried chicken that came. In like a KFC, sort of like 12 piece basket. It wasn't 12 pieces, but it was,
Britit was a lot,
Joshit was a lot of chicken.
BritI didn't realize how much chicken it was gonna be, and it also said roasted chicken.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritUm, so I thought we were gonna get like not deep fried chicken. Yeah. But we, it, it was deep fried. It was still amazing.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritUh, I just didn't know what I was ordering. Yeah. And then we got the apple strudel there.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritThat was an incredible apple
Joshstrudel. That was a really good apple strudel.
BritYeah.
JoshUm, the stew was fantastic. Yeah. Overall really good. And that was, I would say inexpensive for
BritYeah.
JoshA Michelin guide rated restaurant. And it was, I think for the two of us with drinks with the dessert was 70 euro maybe, I think, if I'm remembering correctly.
BritYeah.
JoshSo we did go. For like late lunch, I think we were there like at four o'clock. Mm-hmm. If I remember correctly. So a late lunch service, but still very good. Um,
BritI think every meal we had here was so delicious. I don't think we, we missed. Any of them on any of them. We also went to a pink elephant.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritThat was such a fun vibe. They had a part of their restaurant on the street almost. Mm-hmm. with umbrellas and, kind of like a porch area, but it was on the street. And, that's where we sat. So we were outside. It was a little cold, and I should have worn warmer clothes that is on me. but we got a vegan burrito and a vegan taco there. It's not all vegan, but they have vegan options. And we were just done with meat for the day, so we were like, we're gonna order some veggies.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd it was amazing. That taco I had was incredible.
JoshDelicious. Delicious. Yeah.
BritAnd then we got the Churro sticks.
JoshMm-hmm. Churro sticks with chocolate drizzle that dunk'em in. And it also had a bunch of, uh, fruit around the plate with some caramel drizzled over that.
BritOh yeah.
JoshThat was delicious.
BritWho doesn't love churro sticks? Do we call'em churro sticks or churros?
JoshI don't know. I think churros.
BritChurros.
JoshYeah.
BritYeah, they were good.
JoshI don't want us to skip over this and I don't wanna forget, but we also were fortunate enough to be surrounded with great chocolate again in Austria. Mm-hmm.
BritYes. I did not realize that Austria had such a strong chocolate game.
JoshYeah. Yeah. I mean, after Belgium I was like, this is, and obviously. Two completely different countries with the different strengths of chocolate, but
Britmm-hmm.
JoshUh, we did a little research just Googling and you know, Belgium is very well known for their dark chocolate and their purity of chocolate, where Austria apparently is very well known for their fillings inside of chocolate. Mm-hmm. So we had several little bites of chocolate throughout our time there.
BritYeah.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYeah. We went back to the place around the corner of our Airbnb like three times while we were there.
JoshYeah.
BritWe did get some for friends and family while we were there. So not all of it was for us, but a lot of it was, it,
Joshit was just so good and it was. Convenient. You know,
BritEckerds chocolate is where we went. Mm. Incredible. Oh my gosh. I am already missing all of this food. How could you not?
JoshYeah, yeah.
BritIs there any, are there any places that we are missing that you feel like you want to talk about?
JoshMan, I mean, like you said, we really didn't miss, I mean, some good coffee, some good wine.
BritOh, the wine there. Yes. We went to a couple different wine bars. Mm-hmm. And, uh, we kind of made it a point to try Sauvignon Blanc that was made in Austria, because there is a region in Austria and we were actually in that region. Mm-hmm. Uh, the Syrian region, I believe. Yep. It's called.
JoshYeah.
BritUm, and this region is known for their Sauvignon Blanc. Mm-hmm. And it was delicious. I love a good Sauvignon Blanc,
JoshYeah, it was really good. We were hoping to go to, there was like a wine festival to the south of Graz while we were there that we were hoping to go to. But I was feeling under the weather, getting over kind of like a chest cold, and it was going to be kind of a difficult day to travel. Being that we would have to take a train and then a bus, and then another train and some walking, and it's just not something that I was feeling up for. And that kind of unfortunately took us out of a few things that we wanted to do. But, uh,
Britbut that's okay. I think, I think when we travel, we have to listen to each other and we cannot just push through those things if we feel like we can't do it. Yeah. You know? Mm-hmm. Like, I would never want you to push through that and then make yourself so sick that like you can't do anything.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYou know, if you need rest, you need rest. I'm not gonna be. Somebody that's like, no, you gotta walk 10,000 steps. Hike up this mountain with me. No, speaking of hiking up a mountain though.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritSo we didn't hike up, but you can go up the stairs of the mountain in Graz.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritUh,
JoshSchlossberg.
BritYes.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritThat was so cool. Yeah. Going up there. So we actually took the elevator.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritBecause, um, why would you take the stairs when you can take the elevator all the way up a mountain?
JoshPlus it was like two euros. And we also then bought for another three Euros a. Slide pass
Britto
Joshcome down. Oh
Britmy gosh.
JoshSo we were just like, ah, we'll just do this
Britthis whole time we're exploring on, on top. And I am terrified of sliding down because it looks scary.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritIt is such a long slide.
JoshIt is. It is. When we came down, you went first and it has a timer going and it's over 30 seconds for sure. It, yeah. Oh my gosh. And usually you're kind of like, woo. But you were dead silent.
BritI was scared,
Joshbut as soon as I started going down, I got a little bit of a head rush. So I was giggling the whole way. I was,
Britoh my gosh. You were giggling so hard. It was so funny listening to you. It was so funny. No, that slide was fun though.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritI would recommend that.
JoshBut, uh, all of, uh, schlossberg. Was cool to walk around up there. Um, there were some old castle ruins up there. Mm-hmm. I think there used to be a prison up there. It was, uh, turned into a prison. So there was kind of old prison ruins up there. There's the clock tower. Uh, we went into the, I think it's a Schlossberg or Graz museum.
BritYeah.
JoshThat's up there that we went into, which was really fun to go through.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshUm, and very informative. They had kind of like a, a screen playing history of, uh, Schlossberg the mountain or the Hill.
BritYeah. That was fun. Mm-hmm. I think traveling is turning us into museum people. I know. I've never been a museum person, but Yeah. It was really fun.
JoshIt was fun. I mean, it helped though that while we were walking up there was like a restaurant and an open seating deck that served, uh, different drinks. So we had a beer and some water and we sat on the deck and looked over the viewpoint of Graz, which was stunning. Amazing.
BritAbsolutely beautiful. I mean, when you say deck, it is, you're on top of a fricking mountain.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYou're looking over and you're seeing all of Graz.
JoshYeah.
BritIt's absolutely stunning.
JoshYeah. Yeah. Highly recommend if you go to Graz that you gotta go up there and
BritFor sure.
JoshI mean, if you're hiking up, that's totally fine. I don't know if you can buy, because we bought the. The slide tickets at the bottom. I assume there's a place that you can buy'em up top, but we bought'em at the bottom. So
Britmaybe it's free if you hike up. I dunno.
JoshNo, it's not free.
BritI don't know.
JoshYou, you have to buy tickets. Um, and I think in total we might have paid like 10 bucks for the ride up and the slide down. So our 10 euro, so not all that expensive, but a fun little 30 seconds to slide down.
BritBut the museum I think was like five euro each
Joshfive or 10 euro each again.
BritYeah.
JoshYeah. Not, not anything crazy expensive. And we
Britgot everything. Everything else was like really easy to explore though.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYeah.
JoshYeah. but yeah, we did that. one day we just kind of walked around the base of. Schlosberg, which was fun. There's like on the opposite side of Old Town, there's just a big park.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshKids and people playing and kind of more of the local living area that we got to see, which was pretty nice.
BritYeah.
Joshan area that when we were walking. Towards, um, the eggenberg castle after we got off the tram, it was such a nice little street with houses and apartments.
BritIt was beautiful. Mm-hmm. And then the, it, there were fall leaves already. Mm-hmm. And it was absolutely beautiful. I could see us there for sure in that area. I was like, oh, I feel it a little more over here. Mm-hmm. I feel like, I mean, being so close to the city center too, like being so easy to get there, I was like, I love Graz in the middle with all of the history and all of that. But also when you're outside and like, by people's houses and like not touristy area. Yeah. It, it felt different.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritIt felt like we were in Gilmore Girls.
JoshYeah, you did say that while we were there. It did. I mean'cause it in
Britthe fall. Yeah.
JoshIn, in that street in particular, which I'm assuming by the way of setup kind of an expensive street to be on. Probably. But you know, the houses were spread out a little bit. Like you said, the trees were well manicured and they were changing colors. And then, uh, Eggenberg was at the end of the street with the mountain behind it, so it was very picturesque.
BritBeautiful.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritVery beautiful. We also went to, uh,
Joshthe Friendly Alien.
BritThe Friendly Alien. Yes.
JoshDon't know the official name for it.
BritNo. But if you look up the friendly alien, the museum comes up.
JoshIt actually comes up. Yeah.
Britit's such a cute building.
JoshMm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And we went in and went through the exhibit that was going on, and it was really emotionally kind of like uncomfortable in a good way that art can make you feel, you know, like some art's, happy, some are sad, like this was,
Brityeah. This had a lot of, uh, advocacy
Joshmm-hmm.
BritWork within it. And it, it showed a lot of pain that people are currently going through, have gone through, um. A lot of like segregation, a lot of, uh, genocide stuff. A lot of, yeah. You know, a lot of advocacy
Joshmm-hmm.
BritUh, that this artist had created. It was really beautiful.
JoshRight.
BritUh, and really powerful.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritMore emotionally triggering than I thought. What we were walking into.
JoshYeah.
BritI wasn't prepared definitely 10 outta 10 experience would recommend going back again. We are turning into museum people.
JoshAnother, uh, place. I think it basically right out the doors, there's a river and on the river through kind of like a walkway is, it's in English called, Mer Island. And it's this little floating platform that they have out there. Yeah, it's a little cafe. You can get some drinks, some snacks, some ice cream. And I mean,'cause of all the walking we did, we just walked across it one day. Really nice day. Sun was out, took some pictures, grabbed the uh, Coke, zero, some ice cream, some water, and just sat out there for a little bit. Yeah. Yeah.
BritThat was so nice.
JoshMm-hmm. You can have a lot of really. Nice days in Graz as kind of like a tourist, you know?
BritYeah.
JoshThere's so much you can do, especially right in Old Town, there's a lot, you can get a lot done in a couple days'cause you don't have to go very far.
BritNo, you do not. No. Mm-hmm. No, it's a really beautiful city and People were very kind there.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYeah.
JoshYeah. Yeah. We didn't run into any trouble with anything, so.
BritI think that Graz checked a lot of boxes for us.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd I don't know that it cracked into my top three.
JoshYeah. I agree with that. Yeah. I
Britmean, it was beautiful. It was stunning. I loved it. Mm-hmm. I loved being there. The food, the culture, the wine, the beer, the views.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritMm-hmm. The exploration. It was, it was really cool. It was really fun. Um, but I don't know if I could see us there long term.
JoshYeah, yeah. No, I agree with that. Um, you know, the mountains always do something to me, so the, the ride in and then being around mountains the entire time always just feels like something so different and mm-hmm. So like exploring. But it just didn't have more than a really fun vacation for me and. We talked about it, and I think we're gonna do an episode kind of talking about changes to, to future trips that we're gonna have.
BritYeah. I think, um, our next episode we'll be talking about, what those changes might be, and also a recap of this really long month, long trip mm-hmm. That we had. Mm-hmm. and just what we learned really about ourselves, about each other, about how we want to move forward with this pod, knowing that we're still really new with this. Right. Like, we're, we're just figuring this shit out, you know? So I, I think that's gonna be, next episode is us talking about that and, yeah, just trying to figure it out.
JoshYeah. Because it was. It was such an interesting way to end the trip in Graz. It was fantastic, a wonderful place, and each country we went to gave us something completely different, and Graz is just an amazing place for everyone to go visit.
BritI agree. I do think we did Graz a bit of a disservice by making it the last one of such a long trip.
JoshMm-hmm.
Britbecause at that point we were already so fatigued. We had been traveling for so long.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritI was thinking about my cats every single second, um, and could not wait to get home to them. I think on some level that was a disservice to Graz.
JoshYeah. I also think. Public transport, they're fantastic. You can get anywhere in Graz fairly easily and outside of Graz. But there were a couple things that we were looking at doing. I forget the name of the mountain, but you can go there and take a ski lift to the top. And
Brityeah,
Joshit was like a little, um, play area up there and just beautiful views and stuff. And to get there by public transport seemed to be a little bit more challenging. It involved a train, bus and tram from our location. So just kind of many modes of public transport, that just seemed a little difficult. So there's that. we've driven through the mountains in the United States and driving through mountains is. A whole nother experience
Britmm-hmm.
JoshThan going on a train.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshAnd I would guess that being able to drive through the mountains that we went through on the train would be a life-changing experience.
BritOh yeah. Those mountains were stunning. Yeah. And we just caught like a glimpse of them on the train. Mm-hmm. Like we did get some good videos of them. Mm-hmm. But they were beautiful. Yeah. And to be able to go around them maybe a little bit more would be so cool. Yeah. That would be a life changing trip. It would,
Joshlike you, I'm guessing you would rent a car and every mile you'd probably pull off to a stop and Yeah. You know, just be like,
Britlike we did in Scotland.
JoshExactly. In Scotland when we were driving through Colorado. just stop and. Like, oh my gosh. Like, look at this, and you know that that could be a whole game changer for the, the country, for the trip. I mean that, that can be said probably for pretty much any country.
BritOh, for sure. Mm-hmm. I would definitely go back to Austria.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYeah,
Joshfor
Britsure. Austria was so much fun.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd it was beautiful. I think if we did go back, we would spend the sole amount of our time on the trip in Austria, so we, you know, had all of that energy just for Austria.
JoshOh, sure. I get what you're saying. Yeah,
Brityeah,
Joshyeah. Absolutely. I could do, you know, week to week long driving trip through Austria. I think that would be pretty awesome.
BritDoesn't sound bad to me.
JoshWe were, we were going through on the train and all of a sudden a, a small little mountain town would pop up and we're like, I wanna know what's there. I wanna know what's in that little town. You know? I bet they have a bar that's just like. Looking straight up the mountain, like, yeah.
BritYeah,
JoshI bet that's cool.
BritYeah.
JoshSo, and we got to do some of that in Graz, just, just like a little taster. I feel like that's what Graz is. It's called the, the taste of Austria some great food. But as far as all of Austria, especially the mountainous kind of middle southern part, it's just a little, just a little taster,
Britlittle taste of it.
JoshYeah.
BritI would wanna explore the Styrian region just a little bit more. Mm-hmm. To know, uh, the, the wineries, the vineyards, the, uh, the grapes that are grown there. Mm-hmm. And more of the wine.
JoshYeah, absolutely. I mean, we had, when we looked at going to some of those festivals, there's some places not to, uh. Far south. Gamlitz I'm pretty sure is one that had a festival going on. Mm. Uh, Lebinitz, they got some hotels there that do a wine taxi that I saw where you can book the hotel there. And then there's a company or an app that you can go on. It's a wine taxi. They take you from, you can get the wine taxi from wine right away. Oh my gosh. It's kind of like Uber, like you have to pay for it as far as like, I know, but I mean that's,
Britbut it's specifically made for people who are going to vineyards. Mm-hmm. That's so fun. Mm-hmm. Wait, we're doing something similar when we go to New Zealand, aren't we? We're taking like a, a van on like a vineyard tour.
JoshOh, yeah.
BritThat's gonna be fun. Maybe after that we'll have to go back to Austria and see which one is better.
JoshYeah, I mean, I'm down, I'm, I'm just pulling up the, the map of it again and I'm like, man, there is, gosh, there's so much.
BritThere's so much. And we have so many other places that we wanna go see too. Mm-hmm. So,
Joshyeah.
BritSo we gotta pace ourselves.
JoshYeah. Oh, I just wanna go to them all right now.
BritI know. Me too. We gotta spend some time with cats first.
JoshThat's true. Gosh, they're, they're being good now. They were a little noisy before they
Britpour themselves out. They did. They were meowing so loud. I was like, you guys are gonna have no energy left. Anything else that you feel like we should talk about in this episode about Graz?
JoshI mean, just to kind of recap it in general, we've both said that, you know, it's not gonna break our top three. It would definitely need to have a lot more in-person research done for us to crack that top three.
BritYeah.
JoshThere's really nothing, again, that a place that really does not not check boxes for us.
BritYeah.
JoshYou know, as, as far as we know, it's the only place that we didn't get to go into a, uh, grocery store on this trip. So, as far as costs of. you know, groceries, we're not a hundred percent sure.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshUh, what that's like. We saw plenty of students walking around. We went right by a university, uh, on one of our little tram rides once, so we, yeah. and I'm pretty sure I looked it up, but they got some pretty good education around there. Mm-hmm. with the trains, it's well connected to a lot of places. Graz is not small. If you look on a map, you might think Graz in general, it might look small. It's not small.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshThere's a lot of people there. A lot of stuff going on. So, um, not sure as far as what work is like there.
BritMm-hmm.
Joshso there's, there's just a lot of, a lot of things that we didn't. We didn't get to experience or look into, I think in our short, our short stint there, that would need more, um, more attention.
BritYeah. We also didn't really look into healthcare or cost of living like the big picture. Mm-hmm.
JoshAt
Britall. Mm-hmm. Uh, water, however, is very safe to drink there.
JoshMm-hmm.
Britreally good water. I think as far as the climate and environment, we talked with someone, who was it? There was, uh, when we were entering the museum mm-hmm. There was the guy who was taking our tickets. Mm-hmm. And he had told us that. When he was a kid, there used to be snow up to his knees
Joshmm-hmm.
BritEvery year.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritAnd that over the past 20 years there's been light dustings of snow. Yeah.
JoshYeah.
BritUm,
Joshyeah. Specifically in the last 10 years, he said it's been very rare to get a decent snow in Graz. Yeah. And he's like, I've lived here my whole life. So
Britclimate change is hitting them hard.
JoshYeah.
BritIt seems.
JoshMm-hmm.
Britbut the climate while we were there, I think was really nice. Mm. It felt good. Um, it felt like a fall kind of weather.
JoshYeah.
BritWhich we love. Mm-hmm. Uh, there was maybe one or two hotter days, but overall it was, it was really nice weather. Um, just climate change is, you know, really hitting them. I felt pretty safe while we were there. I didn't have any moments where I didn't feel safe. yeah, I mean, I think it checks a lot of our boxes and I think we would definitely need to do more in person research to know some of the things that we, we don't know.
JoshMm-hmm. exactly. As far as the point of this podcast is, you know, us looking for a place to potentially live in the future definitely needs that as far as a place that people can go and visit and vacation. A hundred percent do it.
BritYeah.
JoshReally easy to do. It's. Yeah, you can. I just downloaded the app on the train ride there, bought the, the week long unlimited pass.
BritMm-hmm.
JoshSo that if you ever have a conductor or anything ask you about public transportation and the, the Graz area, you can just show'em the ticket right. On your, on your thing. And that was inexpensive. I think it was like 20 euros. So, and he said it was on time. It was so just
Britso easy. I think without you, I would feel so scared to use public transportation, but you take care of a lot of it for us. but also I've learned a lot of how to use public transportation through you. so if there's one thing I could say, it's. To not be afraid mm-hmm. To try it.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritUh, you might make mistakes.
JoshMm-hmm.
BritYou know, uh, we all are gonna make those. However, I think that public transportation is made for people to use it. And whether that's, you know, tourists or people who live there, it doesn't matter. It's for everyone that is there. So use it.
JoshThat, that is something about Graz. It felt very, uh. People friendly.
BritIt did,
Joshit built for people to get around, easily built for, you know, students to get to where they need to go. All again, Graz is massive and the trams went everywhere. We didn't get to explore everywhere, but they could easily go all the way to the south of Graz, north of Graz, east, west. They went everywhere.
BritYeah.
JoshUm, it just felt very accessible for people.
BritMm-hmm.
Joshand, you know, you didn't have to be constrained to a vehicle, it seemed.
Brityeah, I,
JoshI love that about a place. and we had a couple places on this trip that felt like that. So I think, I think that's why too, I feel like a little bit extra for Graz is because it has that feeling.
BritI know a part of me might need to just like, let it digest a little bit more and maybe it will crack the top three. I don't know. Uh. Right now it doesn't, but I look back and I'm like, this was an incredible place. Like
Joshincredible. Yeah.
BritHow is it not in the top three? Yeah. You know, definitely top three vacation destinations
Joshfor sure. Yeah.
BritRight up there with Venice for me.
JoshYeah. Yeah,
Brityeah. Hmm.
JoshAnything else you're thinking about, uh, you wanna mention, say anything?
BritI don't think so. I think this was a really nice trip. I'm happy to be home. Mm-hmm. Um, but I love that we went to Graz. I am really glad that we, we went here. Yeah.
JoshYeah. Same. It was a great part of the trip and mm-hmm. I. I can't wait to go back. If we get to do that,
Britwe have to go back. Uh, like I previously said, the next episode will be about, the recap of this month long trip that we did just take, where we started in the Netherlands, then went to Belgium, Germany, and then Austria. So we're gonna just kind of recap that and talk about what we learned about ourselves, about each other, and what we might wanna be doing differently on the pod.
