Portugal Trip Plan: Solo Start in Aveiro, Food & Wine Tours in Porto, Coimbra, Lagos & Lisbon
Brittany and Josh share their upcoming Portugal itinerary and why the trip could make Portugal a front-runner for where they might move. They gathered recommendations from TikTok but won’t make it to the islands due to limited time. Brittany will begin with five days of first-time solo travel in Aveiro, navigating Portugal by public transit, before Josh joins her for two more days and then they head to Porto. In Porto, they’ve booked multiple tours including food, drink, port wine, and a full-day Douro Valley wine tour, and they’ll be there for Josh’s birthday. They’ll then spend three days in Coimbra, known for its historic university, followed by three days in Lagos with a beach hotel, a speedboat cave tour, swimming, and a food tour, and finish with one day in Lisbon with a food and wine tour.

@WSMHtravels
Hello and welcome to the We Should Move Here Travels podcast. My name is Brittany.
joshI'm Josh
britand we are your hosts. Today we are gonna be talking about our Portugal trip and everything we plan to do there. We are both so excited for this trip and truly believe this could end up being a front runner for both of us of where we might wanna move.
joshYeah, absolutely. We have posted a couple different tiktoks asking for suggestions and recommendations for Portugal, and so many people have commented, liked, shared, sent us messages, so it's really exciting to go.
britYeah, it is really exciting. I cannot wait. There are some places that people recommended that we won't be going. Mm-hmm. Um, unfortunately we just can't go everywhere. And there are also some places where we just really wanted to check it out so.
joshUnfortunately the islands are someplace that so many people said, oh, you guys have to go. You have to go. But just with a limited time on a trip, and like you said, so many other places we wanna go, it's just not gonna fit into the trip.
britYeah.
joshbut where we are going is we're gonna be starting in the city of Aveiro and it's gonna be kind of a special, unique start to the trip for us.
britYeah. I will be doing the first five days completely solo. I've never done any solo travel before, so it'll be a fun and new experience for me. and then Josh will meet me. There, five days later. So really after seeing my mom bungee jump, I had asked myself like, what really scares me? What is my bungee jumping? It's not actual bungee jumping 'cause that's. That's not something I will be doing. but I was like, what's gonna help me grow as a person? What's going to get me outta my comfort zone? And it's, it's solo travel. It's what we do and it's what we love and I've just never done it solo. So.
joshI'm so excited for you to do this. I'm pretty sure I have been asking you or telling you like, oh, you should do a solo trip. Ever since we started traveling together.
britYeah.
joshAnd now you are. And I'm really excited to. See what kind of experience you have.
britYeah, me too. Looking forward to it.
joshalso looking forward to have my own personal guide to show me around once I get to Aveiro
britYeah, I will have found all of the best spots by then. Hopefully. So I'll show you all of the favorite spots that I've been to those five days. But once Josh meets me there, we will spend two more days there and then we will be going to Porto.
joshYes.
britWe don't have a whole lot planned in Aveiro, only because it's a smaller city. There's not a whole lot of tours or anything. Mm-hmm. Um, but they have canals kind of like Venice.
joshYeah.
britit's smaller than Venice though. Mm-hmm. They have, I think some boats similar to Venice.
joshYeah.
britWhere you can like go through the canals, but I'll wait until you're there to do one of those probably if we want to do one.
joshYeah. Plenty of people have said the Venice of Portugal is Aveiro
britYeah.
joshSo a lot of simularities there. Like you said, just a little smaller. But Porto, I believe is the second largest city in Portugal. Yes. Next to Lisbon. And. Very kind of mixed reviews. People saying like, oh, you have to go to Porto. And a few people saying like, you don't have to, it's just another big city. But for the most part, everyone agrees that it's beautiful regardless.
britYeah. Well, and it's kind of like a, a good stop for tours.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd. If you've been listening to the pod, you know we are suckers for tours, a
joshgreat tour.
britSo we have several tours booked. Mm-hmm. We have a food and drink tour. We have a food tour, we have a port wine tour, and we have a full day wine tour. Mm-hmm. We will be here for your birthday. Yeah. And we're gonna be doing a food tour on that day. Mm-hmm. So that's really exciting.
joshYeah. And the full day wine tour is the Duro Valley, wine experience. That'll be very exciting. A place that a lot of people recommended us to go and stay there. Yeah. But just because of the other places, we just couldn't make it. But luckily. Porto has full day tours, so we decided to do one of those.
britYeah.
joshMm-hmm.
britI'm so excited to go and see the Duro Valley.
joshMm-hmm.
britWe just tried a wine from there after we had booked all of this.
joshOh, we did? That's right.
britIt was really good.
joshIt was, it was very good. I'm really excited to, to go there and get right from the source.
britYeah.
joshMm-hmm. Get a little information on it and with all these tours, it's gonna be fantastic. And the place we're staying is above a brewery as well, so. It's gonna be kind of like our,
britit's like made for us.
joshYeah. A real party for us. Yeah. Kinda stuff. Uh, some drinks and food, like, what else could we ask for?
britYeah. I'm hoping that this is kind of like the rusty mackerel of the spots that we stay Mm. If you haven't heard the Ireland episode, the Rusty Mackerel was just like an incredible pub that we stayed at. So.
joshYeah, that would be, if this is anything close to Rusty Mackerel, I would say that'd be a win.
britYeah,
joshfor sure.
britNo, it's an Airbnb, so, not like a Local Inn or anything like that.
joshMm-hmm. But very excited for Porto. Now,
britPorto's gonna be amazing.
joshOh, it's gonna be fantastic.
britYeah.
joshAnd we didn't say, but we are doing this all by public transport.
britMm-hmm.
joshonce Brittany lands she does have to navigate, oh
britmy
joshGod. Foreign country train by herself.
britYeah. I'm actually really scared, but I've heard that Portugal trains are way easy.
joshMm-hmm.
britSo. We will see if they're actually as easy as y'all say they are,
joshyou'll be fine. And then there's a huge, uh, American expat community there that's moved there. Yeah. So, I'm sure you have plenty of people help you out if you need to. Yeah. And I'm just a phone call away.
britI know After three days in Porto, we will spend three days in Coimbra.
joshMm-hmm. This is one that I pushed for. I kind of wanted a definitely. Slightly smaller town than Porto. After that stay, Coimbra Still a well-populated city and very well known, especially for its university, one of the oldest in Europe, originally established in 1290.
britWow.
joshit's the old medieval capital of Portugal, so, uh, that's something cool. And we don't have any tours booked because they don't really have a lot of those. There are a few food ones that I've noticed across the internet, but we might do a city and university tour 'cause it just looks so historic and fun.
britYeah, it's gonna be a really great stop. I think we're gonna have a lot of fun there.
joshMm-hmm.
britWho knows? Maybe this could be a place where we wanna move.
joshYeah. We are coming. I think it's the week before they have, I believe it's tassel burning is what it translates to. It's. The next week is when the, all the graduates come out and they do like a tassel burning ceremony, and the city goes a little crazy with parties.
britOh.
joshBut I think we're there the week before that.
britOkay.
joshMm-hmm. So there might be a little buzz of energy from the students from the university.
britYeah.
joshSo,
britokay.
joshYeah. I hope it's a great stop, but after that we are definitely going to a great stop in Lagos.
britYes, I am so excited for Lagos. We are staying at a hotel with a pool by the beach and. Uh, you're gonna go swimming in the ocean for the first time. Mm-hmm. Maybe here, maybe at one of the previous stops. Who knows?
joshMm-hmm.
britUh, but you're going swimming in, in the ocean. I'm gonna make you,
joshI'm definitely gonna try. I'm a little nervous, but I think with you there, I'll be okay.
britYeah.
joshYou can fend off the sharks for me.
britI'll fend him off. Hopefully not on my period. Um,
joshnice
britthen. We also have a boat tour scheduled. Mm-hmm. This is a speed boat tour we're gonna go see the caves. Mm-hmm. By Lagos. Mm-hmm. And I think you get to do some swimming and stuff there too, so like off of the boat.
joshYeah, maybe.
britSo you'll go, you'll definitely go swimming in the ocean here. Definitely. Can't
joshforget my swimsuit.
britNo, I actually had a nightmare. I think it was last night that I forgot my swimsuit.
joshI mean, it's Portugal. They're beaches, they're swimsuits for sale.
britI know. I know. But we will also be doing a food tour here, of
joshcourse.
britOh my gosh. I'm just so excited for Lagos. I am. I think Lagos is gonna be such a good stop.
joshI think it's gonna be amazing. A lot of people either said, you gotta do North Portugal. It's the true Portugal or Southern Portugal. 'cause it's the true Portugal. So we're getting one of each. We're getting Porto, which is pretty far north, and then we're getting Lagos, which is the furthest south. Yeah, pretty much. You can go,
britYeah, so we're spending three days in Lagos. Mm-hmm. And then we will spend one day in Lisbon. And for that one day we do have a food and wine tour booked.
joshYes, we do.
britSo hopefully we get to see a little bit more of Lisbon, then you would expect with just one day. Mm-hmm. I think typically with food and wine tours, you get to see more of the city than you normally would. Yeah. So I think it'll give us at least a, glimpse of Lisbon.
joshYeah. And again, there were a lot of people that were hating on Lisbon, but
brityeah,
joshsome people said it's the true Portugal. So we will see for the. Albeit one day that we're gonna be there.
britYeah. And I mean, we're flying out of there, so.
joshMm-hmm.
britWe might as well spend some time there.
joshYeah. It's almost like we're making up for our last trip. With all these food tours. 'cause in Ireland we only had one food tour throughout the whole trip. Yeah. And some people might think, well, you did one food tour. No, not around here, partner. Not around here.
britNo. Yeah. One food tour on a whole. Trip is not enough.
joshYeah.
britNot for me.
joshAcross a whole country? No.
britNo. I don't think for either of us.
joshNo, no.
britWe love food. Yeah. Okay. We love food tours,
joshlove food. And also across an entire country there's different cuisines.
britYeah. And.
joshEvery corner of a country, you gotta find out what those things are.
britYeah.
joshMm-hmm.
britItaly is a great example of that because the food in Venice is so different than the food in Tuscany.
joshYeah.
britSo different.
joshCompletely different. Oh man. Just thinking about that. Once we go to our honeymoon in Southern Italy, we're gonna be like, this isn't the Italy food we had before. Minus the pizza and the pasta.
britWell, and from what I've heard, I think that Southern Italy has more pasta.
joshOh, that's right. Than North Italy's. Northern Italy was more fish, right? More
britfish seafood.
joshYeah.
britYeah. Oh, well
joshthen I'm really excited.
britYeah, me too. Anyways, back to Portugal.
joshI'm really excited about all these food tours in Portugal.
britMe too. Mm-hmm. And the wine tours. Ugh. Portugal wine is so good.
joshMm-hmm.
britIt's gonna be great. what are you most looking forward to?
joshFor us as a couple. I'm really excited to get there. That first day with you, after you've had time there by yourself. Yeah. And. To see what's what's happened. Really. Of course, I'll be in contact with you the whole time and know.
britYeah.
joshBut then to get there and actually see like how you're doing will be awesome. And I'm guessing that you're gonna have a great time and nerves are gonna go away as soon as you're there. Yeah. But besides that. Uh, there are a lot of people singing the praises for Northern Portugal.
britMm-hmm.
joshSo I think Porto for sure is gonna be really cool and really beautiful. Yeah. I mean, I'm gonna say Porto, I think that's gonna be really beautiful and cool.
britOkay.
joshMm-hmm. And of course we're doing all the food tours there, or a lot of food tours there.
britYeah.
joshMm-hmm.
britPorto, I think is gonna be a really surprising big city for us.
joshMm-hmm.
britBecause we're not huge like big city people.
joshRight.
britBut I think it's going to be surprising for us.
joshMm-hmm.
britFor sure.
joshYeah. And I think, uh, big cities is relative. I'm not sure what the population there is, but I mean, where we live, Fox Cities, I think it's around. 200,000 for a population in the Fox Cities,
britPorto has about 250,000.
joshI think where we're from, the Fox Cities, probably a little more spread out, but similar amount of people, so I don't think we'll feel too overcrowded.
britYeah. I agree.
joshMm-hmm. What are you most looking forward to on the trip?
britI am really excited to spend your birthday there. Aw. And that's gonna be in Porto. And we have a food tour booked that day. I think that's gonna be a really fun birthday for you. Mm-hmm. but I'm also really looking forward to Lagos.
joshAre you?
britYeah. Like we haven't done a beach trip. Really?
joshNo.
britAnd this will be that. Yeah. So. I'm excited for that.
joshThe closest beach I think we've done was when we went to Silver Strand in Ireland.
britYeah. But it was freezing.
joshFreezing and really windy.
britYeah. It's kind of unlike us to be doing a beach trip.
joshMm-hmm.
britSo I, I don't know. I think it's gonna be really interesting to see how we like it.
joshFor sure. Yeah, I, I mean, I'm excited to see, I've never been a beach person, but maybe Portugal's gonna change me,
britmaybe.
joshMm-hmm. Uh, which location do you think is gonna be your favorite and which do you think is gonna be mine? I,
britlike, as far as moving there, wanting to live there.
joshSure. Yeah. If you wanna go with that. Yeah.
britI think that Coimbra is gonna be yours.
joshMm.
britAnd I think Aveiro is gonna be mine.
joshYeah.
britI do think so. I think Lagos is gonna be absolutely stunning. I don't know with the tourists that we'll see ourself there really. Mm-hmm. and Porto and Lisbon are kind of bigger cities, so it, we definitely could see ourselves there, but it's kind of up in the air, I don't know.
joshMm-hmm.
britbut Aveiro, with me having some alone time there, I'm like. I could see myself really loving it and falling in love with it.
joshMm-hmm.
britbut then Coimbra, because it's a university town you love, university towns
joshlove 'em.
britI think you were a professor in your past life.
joshI don't know of what, uh, professor
brittraveling.
joshOh, there we go. That was way better than what I was about to say. What were
brityou gonna say?
joshBullshit.
britWell, that too, but, um, yeah. So I'm gonna say yours is Coimbra mine is Aveiro. Mm. What about you?
joshI am gonna say Porto is gonna be your favorite. Oh, mm-hmm. Yeah, I don't get me wrong, I think you're gonna love Aveiro. I think it's gonna be your Venice of Portugal. 'cause if you've listened to this podcast. Venice is Britney's all time city. I
britlove thatVenice so much.
joshAnd so if it's just like a little smaller, 'cause Venice is pretty big.
britYeah.
joshIf it's a little smaller, you're gonna absolutely love it.
britYeah.
joshBut if we're talking about places to move, I think Porto. Might be it. I've seen pictures, all the food tours that we're gonna do. I think we're gonna see so much of the city, and I think that's gonna give it a little, little nudge. But who knows? Maybe you will blossom in
britMaybe. What about for you?
joshI think I'm also gonna say Porto, I,
britHey,
joshyou know, I want it to be Coimbra, but usually when I want something, it's.
britIt's not it.
joshIt's not it. Like when we took our Europe trip.
britYeah,
joshI think Graz, I was like, man, I really hope Graz is it. And I loved Graz. It was stunning, but it just wasn't it Like Ghent was
britGhent, was it?
joshMm-hmm. Ghent was it? And I didn't even, I don't think either of us really thought it. I think I might have said it would be for you, but regardless.
britYeah,
joshI'm, I'm excited for Porto for both of us. I think we're gonna see a lot of the city with all the tours, which is exciting.
britI love that. Mm-hmm. Oh, okay.
joshSo with that being said about tours, which tour experience do you think is going to be your favorite? What are you looking forward to the most, I should say?
britI think the full day wine tour in the Duro Valley. that one I think is gonna be an amazing tour. Yeah. I mean, we get lunch, we get to do the tour with a group of people. Hopefully they're great people.
joshMm-hmm.
britHopefully, the tour guide is great. I've looked at reviews and it just looks amazing. So I think that one's gonna be. A highlight of a tour.
joshMm-hmm.
britUm, I also think that the boat tour in Lagos is gonna be so different for us.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd so, like unlike anything we've ever. Experienced. So I think that one's gonna be really fun too, and get you out of your comfort zone a little bit.
joshI'm outta my comfort zone just talking about it.
britYeah, it'll be so fun.
joshI gotta say a lot like it's not water, it's not boats, it's the ocean. Yeah. It's just, we don't know what, like 90 some percent of the ocean is unexplored and unknown.
britI know.
joshThat is terrifying.
britIt is really scary. But I mean, you're more likely to go down in a plane than you are to get bit by a shark.
joshOh, that's an exciting thought.
britWell, and that's very unlikely,
joshright.
britYou know? So
joshVery true.
britThink of how unlikely it is.
joshWell, and I mean, just how. Rares it for you to be the one calling me down about a scary experience instead of,
britwell, with the ocean, I've been in the ocean before.
joshThat's true.
britNot for many, many years though, so. Mm-hmm. I might be scared. I don't know.
joshYeah, I'm sure you're right. I'm sure we'll get out there. We'll go on the ocean and be fine. We'll get on the boat. It'll be great.
britYeah,
joshit'll be a great experience.
britYeah. Mm-hmm. Agreed. What about for you? What tour or experience are you most excited for?
joshI think I'm most looking forward to the port wine tour in Porto.
britOh
joshyeah. The, yeah. Don't get me wrong, the full day wine tour, it's gonna be exciting. Like you said, we get lunch and from the description of the tour, it is with a family winery, so that's really exciting. We loved that when we were in Sienna, Italy.
britYeah,
joshbut the Port wine tour in Porto, they take you around the city. You go into like the wine caves where the wine is stored, so we get a little bit of the city. Plus the wine right on that tour. So I think that's gonna be really exciting and fun.
britYeah. This one does look amazing and it has incredible reviews.
joshMm-hmm.
britLike 1300 reviews and it's at a 4.9.
joshYeah.
britThat's pretty incredible. There are some that have like over 2000 and they have a 5.0. Mm-hmm. It's crazy.
joshYeah, they, they must do tours right there, so.
britYeah.
joshOr the wine just must be that good and. People get drunk on wine right away.
britYeah. The Duro Valley one as well has 1800 reviews and is a 4.9.
joshMm-hmm.
britThat's crazy.
joshYeah.
britSo these are gonna be some really good tours.
joshYeah, I, I think it was a good spot to load up on tours. You don't always get that. Like our trip to Ireland.
britYeah.
joshPlus it could just be time of year. I am excited for the time of year. 'cause we are going here at the end of spring, so we're on the cusp of summer before it gets really busy. So we'll be kind of in a good middle area, I think as far as busyness.
britYeah.
joshMm-hmm.
britI think so too.
joshBut we also didn't have any trouble booking any tours or any hotels or anything. So it might be really quiet, so,
brityeah.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd I think the places that we're staying to, some of them look really cool. Like the the brewery one. Mm-hmm. In Porto. Yeah. That one looks really cool. And I'm excited to see the places that we're gonna stay.
joshYeah.
britToo, the one in Lagos. Mm. So excited.
joshYeah. And that's got. You said that has a pool with it, right?
britIt has a pool. Mm-hmm. It's on the beach.
joshYeah. Well, it's a short walking distance to the beach, right? Yeah, I think, yeah. Yeah,
britI think so.
joshSo close enough. So we are gonna be real. Beach people.
britWe're gonna be beach people.
joshMan, crazy. It's
brita different trip. But Portugal is also known for its mountainous regions as well. So I think we will kind of get the best of both worlds. I don't know if we're like staying anywhere where there's. An insane amount of mountains, but near Aveiro. There's, um, a mountainous region that I've seen that has, I think, the longest suspension bridge in Europe.
joshOh.
britSo I've looked into that. And, there's also like these colorful stairs that I've seen
joshOkay.
britThat are also near Aveiro. So we'll, we'll see what we end up finding.
joshYeah. We got lots of time, lots of things we can do.
britYeah.
joshYeah. I think Coimbra is kind of on like some foothills of some mountains.
britYeah.
joshSo we might be a little more into it since it's east of Lisbon, so a little deeper into the center of Portugal. Yeah. So we might get to a little bit of a mountain fix there.
britThat's so exciting.
joshYeah. Really excited for this trip. Is there anything else that we haven't really talked about that you're excited for or scared of, interested in?
britI mean, I'm pretty scared to do the solo travel, but mm-hmm. We're gonna have a whole episode in the future about our solo travel experiences. Mm-hmm. Like you've solo traveled to Thailand. Mm-hmm. And, I think we can both, you know, talk about what the experience was like for us.
joshYeah.
britand hopefully I find some cool things that we can do for the two days that you're there with me. Yeah. Afterwards. I am just looking forward to the whole trip with you, and I'm trying not to think about the solo travel piece because it scares me. But
joshyeah,
britI think it'll be fine. I'll be fine.
joshYou'll be, it'll be great.
britwhat about you? Anything that we're missing?
joshJust excited for, for the people and the food and the wine. I don't know what order, if that's the right order. People, food, wine, food, people, wine. I'm not exactly sure the order, but.
britWine, food, people,
joshwine, food people.
britThat's my order.
joshI'm really excited for the trip. It's gonna be really fun. A place that many people have recommended to us. Of course, a huge American expat community, so a lot of people move there for good reason. So it'll be exciting to see what all the talks about.
britYeah. So many people have mentioned Portugal because it is a incredibly safe country.
joshMm-hmm.
britI mean, I'm afraid to solo travel, but I'm not like solo traveling to a place that's like unsafe.
joshRight?
britLike, I'm not afraid of being there. I'm afraid of getting there. That's what I'm afraid of.
joshYou're, you're afraid of a un uncomfy plane ride next to someone you don't know.
britYeah. But Portugal is like one of the safest places in the world. It is. Incredibly beautiful from what I've seen in pictures and I can't imagine what it's gonna look like with our own eyes.
joshYeah.
britand I just think it, it has so much to offer and people see that when they travel there. So I think that's why so many people move there. It's an undeniable kind of feeling. I could imagine.
joshYeah.
britThat like this is the place and I, I wonder if we're gonna get it here.
joshI'm looking forward to finding out.
britNext episode, we will be talking about our time spent in Aveiro. Yay.
joshMm-hmm.
britIt feels so odd because we still have a while before we're back home.
joshYeah.
britSo we're recording this way before, but,
joshso next time you see us, we'll probably be a little tanned up.
britOoh. That will be next episode. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and follow on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube @WSMHtravels
