Lisbon in 36 Hours: Food Tour, Wine Bars & a Hotel AC Nightmare | We Should Move Here Travels
Brittany and Josh recap their final day and a half in Lisbon at the end of their Portugal trip, arriving from Lagos on an early train and spending time near the waterfront and historic square. They share highlights from meals at The Folks and Pizzeria Tapas La Casa, cocktails at the Ruby Rosa speakeasy rooftop in their hotel, and standout port wine at Maria Palito. Their last full day features a Lisbon food tour with bifanas and petiscos at Provenciana, sambusas at Cantinho Do Aziz, heavy pours of wine at Tasquinha Canto do Fado alongside octopus salad and bacalhau à brás, espumante at a city overlook, and a top-tier pastel de nata at Pastelaria Santo Antonio, plus a pickpocketing incident witnessed near a church. They also describe an 86°F hotel room due to broken AC, a room switch that fixed it, an airport shuttle, and smooth flights home, concluding Lisbon is great to visit but not their preferred place to live.

@WSMHtravels
Hello, and welcome to the We Should Move Here Travels podcast. My name is Brittany.
joshI'm Josh.
britAnd we are your hosts. Today, we are gonna be talking about our time in Lisbon. We were only here for the last day and a half of our trip before flying home, so, uh, not long, but we did get to experience some of Lisbon. So let's talk about it.
joshYeah. You know, sometimes the places that you only stay for, like, a day in, you get a really big experience for them.
britYeah. So... And we did. Mm-hmm. I mean, it was jam-packed full of so much fun.
joshYeah.
britSo
joshSo we came from Lagos on a 6:00 AM train.
britUgh.
joshAgain, I'm not sure who's deciding these train times between the two of us, but- It might have been me. I'm not sure.
britNo, I think it was a joint decision. But we woke up at 5:00 AM and, uh, it just, it, it wasn't a good time- No I'll tell you what. But me being the type A planner that I am, I made sure that we had a breakfast and a coffee.
joshYep.
britBecause without those things, I would have been the devil. So, so we at least got those things taken care of. And, we were off to Lisbon. I think we had two changes on our train, or just one?
joshUh, I think it was just one.
britJust one. Yeah. the train ride really wasn't bad at all. It actually seemed really quick.
joshYeah, it went by really fast 'cause we were so early. I think it was meant to be a very direct line-
britMm-hmm
joshuh, to Lisbon. it wasn't difficult at all. And when we got to Lisbon early enough that we took one more train, I think, close to our hotel, and that was it.
britI think we got there at around, like, 10:30- Mm-hmm and our check-in wasn't until, like, 3:00. So we dropped off our luggage and our bags, and then We had lunch at this really incredible spot.
joshMm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. We get a coupon from our hotel, which was the, The Arts Hotel and Apartments in Lisbon, which we'll talk more about. But they gave us a coupon for The Folks, which is just across the street, basically, from them.
britMm-hmm.
joshThere was a little bit of a line there, so it must be a popular spot.
britYeah. It was really delicious, though.
joshMm-hmm.
britWe got the turkey benedict, which I did not like, but you loved it. I'm just not a big, like, meat person, and it was- A lot of turkey
joshYeah
britbut I'm sure that's, like, really good for a lot of you listening, so- you also got the tiramisu latte, which I tried. It is pretty sweet, but it was pretty good.
joshTiramisu for coffee. Delicious.
britAnd then we got, oh, I don't know how to say this, a Syrinki. it's a Ukrainian cottage cheese pancake dish. It was so great. It was delicious. I've never had it before. I surprised myself with ordering it because I was like, "Should I order something new?" Mm-hmm. "Should I take a risk? Should I not?" But I saw what I thought they were on somebody else's plate, and I was like, "Those look so good."
joshMm-hmm.
britSo I'm glad I ordered them. They were really delicious.
joshNice and fluffy, savory. Pretty good.
britThe cottage cheese was like, it added a nice, like, texture almost to the dish.
joshMm-hmm.
britCause it was, it was, like, kind of melted, and it got, like, kinda cheesy and, ugh, so good.
joshReally good dish. Um, good way to start our time in Lisbon.
britFor sure.
joshAfter that lunch, we still had plenty of time before we could check in, so we went and walked down kind of, I guess, one of the main streets. There's a bunch of main streets in Lisbon. There's so many people. Yeah. I don't think there's a singular main street, but, uh, took a long walk down and made it to the water. And their historic square is massive.
britIt's huge.
joshUh-huh.
britAnd it's really surprising how they've taken care of it-
joshMm-hmm
britbecause it's so old, but it looks, like, so clean.
joshRight. I was saying, as soon as we walked down, like, "This is, this is for tourists. This is fairly new. There's no way." But then I looked up, and the, the arch and some of the statues there were 1800s. I think one was late 1700s, so-
britYeah pr- And you were like, "Whoa."
joshY- yeah.
britHow are they taking care of this so well?"
joshYeah, exactly. really cool to see. We walked by the water. They had some, uh, sand sculptures that, artists or some people had just kinda put together that those were really cool to see.
britYeah, those were beautiful. I think there were, there were, like, tip jars and people, like, made money off of doing that, so- Yeah kinda cool. And the ocean was stunning. But we had just come from Lagos, so-
joshWe, we, we had seen- quite a bit of ocean to this point.
britYeah. But still, so beautiful. Mm-hmm. I can't get enough ocean. and you did a little photo shoot of me- by the ocean. Yeah. But my hair was going everywhere.
joshIt was quite a windy day.
britYeah. But the square was really cool. we had just, like, walked around until our check-in time. Mm-hmm. And then we checked in, and after that we went to the Ruby Rosa Speakeasy Rooftop Restaurant. That was actually in our hotel.
joshYeah.
britThe entrance was on the same floor that we were staying.
joshYeah, really convenient. Um- Yeah. And we, because we're staying in the hotel there was a discount for that as well. Uh, nice cocktails, good views out there. Because it was windy we didn't sit on their outdoor patio section 'cause it was a little sprinkly as well. Mm-hmm. But some good views from it, a good viewpoint. I know there's lots of social media posts and videos on where to get the best view in Lisbon, but this isn't a bad one, for sure.
britIt's not a bad one at all. Mm-hmm. No, it was so much fun, too. We ordered, um, two different cocktails, and I remember I didn't like mine as much. And you took mine and I got yours.
joshClassic.
britSuch a good husband here-
joshfolks. You just gotta find someone that likes everything. Yeah. So that's, that's the key.
britso after the drinks we had walked around a little bit more, and then we found a spot for dinner.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd at dinner all I wanted was a salami pizza, 'cause this was one of our last nights in Europe and I was like, "I'm getting a fucking salami pizza." So we split a salami pizza and a salad.
joshYeah.
britBoth really good. This was from Pizzeria Tapas La Casa. Mm-hmm. It had really good reviews when I looked into it, and I, I think we also left a really good review because it was great. It was fantastic.
joshYeah.
britAnd the vibe of this place was so like Italy.
joshMm-hmm.
britIt was so much like Italy.
joshVery much so, yeah. Yeah.
britWe're not in Italy. We were in Portugal, but- It was an Italian place, and I loved it
joshwe acted like we were, you know? Like you said, we had that pizza, we had the salad, we had a whole bottle of wine to ourselves.
britWe sure did.
joshWe were flying high.
britNot literally.
joshNo. But we, we were feeling pretty good after this, and we were still feeling some port wine.
britWe were.
joshMm-hmm.
britYeah, so we wanted a glass of port wine, and we walked around, like, for a long time- Mm-hmm to try and find it. Mm-hmm. And then you had found this wine bar-
joshMm-hmm
britcalled Maria Palito, and they served us the, some of the best port wine. It was so delicious.
joshAnd this wine bar is fantastic. This is the kinda wine bar that I wanted to go to in Portugal. This one and I think on our full-day Douro Wine Valley tour- Mm-hmm little wine bar, we went on that one. Those two, fantastic. The staff, great at recommending wines. Good selection, just great people. We went back to it the next day, which we'll talk about, but I loved this place.
britYeah. We had some good banter with the staff.
joshMm-hmm.
britThey were great.
joshWell, and there was something about, like, a dog too. It was, like, in, on their wine bottles. It had, like, pictures on the wall.
britYeah.
joshIt was all about this, this dog, and oh, I just loved it.
britCutest fricking dog.
joshYeah. Didn't get to meet the dog, but-
britNo But we saw it everywhere. It's almost like we became friends with it.
joshwe had some little chocolates with our port wine there. Uh, we were pretty, uh, well intoxicated. Yeah. And we were like, "God, we, we could use some gelato." So we went to our hotel restaurant, asked them if they had any, uh, dessert, and they said no. So we had another one of one of the famous pork sandwiches we keep talking about, the bifanas.
britYes. Mm-hmm. The bifana there, so delicious. Oh my. It was so good.
joshYeah.
britWe, I think my favorite is still the one that we had in Lagos.
joshYep.
britBut, uh, this one is number two.
joshIt's-
britOut of all of the ones that we've had.
joshIt's so crazy how... I don't think we had a bad one. No. And they all had a- unique, like, seasoning recipe- Yeah that made them different but so good. I just, oh, I loved these. I
britthink you have to put on the piri piri and the- Mm mustard because it just adds so much flavor to it.
joshYeah.
britUh, if you eat it alone, it does have a lot of flavor, don't get me wrong, but it's just such a good addition to the sandwich.
joshYeah.
britMm. We should've eaten more of those.
joshDefinitely a good late night drunk snack.
britYes.
joshCause-
britAnd really cheap.
joshOh, super cheap. Yeah.
britIt was like three euro.
joshYeah, very inexpensive. but after we had that, we decided we had enough and, uh, we went back to our hotel room, which Man, we just do not get luck for our last hotels of a stay
britWe really don't. I feel like it's a curse that has been casted upon us, and we cannot escape it
joshCause we went back into the room. We had turned down the thermostat when we left. After we checked in, got in, dropped our stuff off, turned down the thermostat to as low it could go, and we let them know that it wasn't running that great, and they were gonna check into it. We came back, and it was...
britIt was like 86 degrees in the room, Fahrenheit
joshIt was insane
britand it was getting hotter
joshMm-hmm
britAnd I had the window open, and that was bringing some slight air in, but it was rough. It- that was a rough night
joshMm-hmm. Mm-hmm. They did make up for it the next night, which we'll talk to about in a second, but that first night was tough
britThat was rough, yeah
joshEspecially when you're drunk. Last thing you want is a boiling room to sweat out all the... It might, it might've helped, actually. It
britmight've helped. 'Cause the next morning I woke up, and I was fine. Yeah Totally great.
joshI was not hungover. The- Blessing in disguise.
britYeah. The only thing we missed this day when we woke up is coffee. I still can't believe we didn't have a last day coffee here.
joshWell, we did it. We did talk about it. Which day was it that we decided to have three... Oh, that was in Lagos
britYeah
joshOur last full day in Lagos, if you didn't listen to the episode, we went to three coffee shops and had three coffees and then could not sleep a lick and then woke up at 5:00 AM.
britYeah.
joshSo we-
britThat was a great idea- Yeah. by the way.
joshIt was mine. Yeah.
britIt's a fantastic idea. Loved it.
joshSo-
brit10 out of 10
joshwe did, or at least I was like, "It might be a great idea for us not to have any coffee this morning."
britNo, but I hated that. Yeah. I needed coffee. I need coffee every single morning. It's a problem, but...
joshWe, we work around it. You know, going to meetings, all the things.
britAnyways. It's-
joshSo our last full day in Portugal, what did we do, Brit?
britWe had a food tour. Woo.
joshShocker.
britSuch a surprise, yeah. Uh, this was a great food tour. I am so glad that we picked this one. There are several that you can do in Lisbon, but this one had such a great guide. The group itself was fantastic, had some really great people on it- Mm-hmm that we loved talking to and getting to know, and shared a lot of wine with them.
joshLots of wine.
britHere's what you should know before booking a food tour in Portugal: all of them have wine. Every single food tour has a wine. Mm-hmm. It should be a food and wine
joshtour. They all, they all have wine. I'm pretty sure you're always gonna get a Super Bock somewhere on the tour.
britYeah.
joshYep. The couple that we had the most fun with was from Canada- Oh, yeah on this tour. Um- Yeah.
britThey were so fun.
joshYeah, they were great fun. They drank with us a lot, but, uh-
britThey drank with us a lot. They did.
joshBut we started off right away on this tour at, Provenciana, and we had the bifanas again, the pork sandwich, delicious, as well as a petisco, which is basically an appetizer dish, like sausage and then steamed or baked vegetables all combined together.
britYeah.
joshMm-hmm.
britVery, very delicious. I'm iffy on some sausage, and I really liked this one. It was more of like a chorizo, and it was delicious.
joshI actually think before we started this tour, we, we were like, "We'll take it easy on the tour. We won't drink a lot. That way our travel day is a little easier." But the s- We did
britsay that.
joshBut the very first stop, this first stop we got served Super Bock. Yeah. And we're like, "Well, you know, not gonna waste it on this tour."
britYeah, I mean, if you're serving me, I'm not gonna say no. Right. I'm not gonna be rude.
joshYeah, it's just rude. So it was downhill from there. Anyways, so we stopped at that first place, really good. Um, the guide was very informative. He also does, uh, history tours of Lisbon, so he had lots of great information throughout the tour. Um, couple historic stops. We stopped at a church right after the first food stop.
britYeah. When we stopped at this church, I... This was the first time I've ever seen pickpocketing in real time.
joshYeah, live action.
britIt was crazy, and I am so glad that I had a cross-body bag that has a lock on it Just be safe in Lisbon, folks. It... And if you have a purse or a backpack, make sure it has, like, some safety features on it where it can't be, you know, easily pick-pocketed.
joshYeah. Be self-aware.
britYeah.
joshYep. Our safety tip of the week.
britAnyways, so then after that we had, sambusa.
joshYeah. These little triangular pastries filled with... It can be filled with a lot of different things, veggies, beef, chicken. We had beef and chicken, I believe.
britMm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. It was at a African restaurant called Cantinho Do Aziz.
joshMm-hmm. Really cute spot, outdoor seating under umbrellas and other, other coverage. Um, and these were pretty good. I really enjoyed it.
britMm-hmm.
joshThe chicken-
britReally delicious
joshthe chicken was my favorite, but I think you liked the beef.
britYeah, I liked the beef one, and you liked the chicken one.
joshMm-hmm. the guide also described some of the pictures and artwork that was spread throughout the streets- Mm-hmm because a photographer had used th- this area and the people of this area as his muse for photography. And once his, like, portfolio kinda took off, he then, or allowed the people to have the pictures posted up on the wall next to the residence of the people who had their picture taken.
britYeah.
joshAnd so there were all these pictures, and a lot of the residents are still there from when these pictures were taken. It was really cool to, uh, see that, and again, see the history.
britYeah. It was really cool.
joshMm-hmm
britThen we walked up a shit ton of stairs As you do in Lisbon.
joshThrough most of Portugal, really.
britYeah. Except for in Aveiro.
joshYeah.
britUm, but so we walked up all those stairs, and we were basically almost at the tippy top. And we went to the wine bar or the wine place where we were served a lot of wine.
joshMm-hmm.
britLike, it was all you can drink wine. Yeah. This was not a cheap tour either, so we were like, "Okay, let's get our money's worth." We were not thinking about our conversation we had that morning.
joshNo. That was in the wind. That was on a plane home on its own already.
britYeah.
joshBut this place, um, I'm gonna butcher the name for sure, uh, Tasquina Canto do Fado. And lots of wine. Like you said, it was one of those places where the guide said, "Just pour your own wine. If you need more, just ask for a bottle. They'll bring a bottle." So we- that's what we did. We just kept pouring, slugging the red wine, passing down the bottle.
britBut we were drinking with that couple- Mm-hmm from Canada, and- Yeah they kept pouring us wine. We kept pouring them wine. It was just like a...
joshYeah. no.
britIt was so fun though. Mm-hmm. And this place was such a cute and cozy kind of environment. Yeah. Um, we had octopus salad here-
joshYes
britwhich I didn't know if I was gonna like. I loved it. It had so much flavor. It was, like, very fresh-
joshYeah
britalmost like a ceviche.
joshMm-hmm.
britIt was so delicious.
joshI preferred it on bread. They had- Mm-hmm little pieces of bread, and I like to put a little bit on there with the sauce that it was kind of in. Have it on the bread, delicious. Loved it. And then w- we also, as a main, We had bacalhau a bras, and this is a shredded cod, fried potatoes, onions, and scrambled eggs.
britthis was very delicious. Mm-hmm. I was shocked at how much I liked everything here because it is so, uh, fish forward.
joshYeah.
britAnd sometimes I have a fishy-
joshLike aversion. You get a little bit of a fish ick.
britYeah.
joshMm-hmm.
britYeah. Especially being in Portugal for three weeks at this point.
joshYeah.
britYeah. I, I was eating a lot of fish, but I was surprised that I liked especially that octopus salad.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd then the shredded cod was delicious. I don't think I finished it all, but I did like it. and a- again, I just really liked this place. It was such a vibe. I would go back.
joshOh, for sure. I would highly recommend people going to this place just on their own.
britYeah.
joshAnd I think pretty much every place that we've mentioned on this tour, they were all delicious, but this place for sure you could definitely have a good lunch or good dinner there.
britMm-hmm.
joshYeah.
britFor sure.
joshUh, we did have a stop off at a lookout point where we were served some... What's the sparkling wine?
britOh, espumante.
joshEspumante. Yeah. We had a stop off there. It was kind of on its own. We weren't inside of a restaurant, but somehow our guide left for a minute and came back with flutes of espumante. Yeah. So...
britWe weren't gonna say no. No. And we're like looking over this very beautiful overlook-
joshMm-hmm
britout to the city of Lisbon and it's gorgeous.
joshYeah.
britand then our final stop was one of my favorite pastel de natas- Mm that we had on the trip. It was delicious. It would either be this one or the one that we had in Porto on the food tour, um, at Fabrica de Nada. Yeah. Either that one or this one at Pastelaria Santo Antonio for Best one. it was very, very good.
joshIt definitely makes so much of a difference if you put cinnamon on top of- this pastry.
britNo, for sure. Yeah, cinnamon adds so much flavor to it, and it's already so creamy, and it has, um, like a warm custard filling.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd it just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
joshIt's a different vibe in Portugal as well.
britI can't imagine having one of those during the fall. Ugh. With, like, an apple cider. Oh my God. I think I would faint.
joshI think I would enjoy that immensely as well.
britMaybe I'll try making it.
joshOh, there we go. Hey.
britGo for it. I doubt it'll be very good. Anyways, um, so as if that wasn't enough wine-
joshYou took the words out of my mouth. I was gonna say exactly that
britwhat the fuck were we thinking?
joshI don't know.
britWe had to leave in less than 24 hours, go on a long flight, a long travel day, and here we decide, "Hey, let's go to the wine bar."
joshYeah, not even two steps away from the tour. Right as we step away from the tour, we're passing Maria Palato, the wine bar, and we decide, "You know what? We need a couple more glasses."
britWe definitely did not need a couple more glasses.
joshIn fact, they did not need more glasses.
britMm-mm. No, because I tell you what, about two hours later, I was on my deathbed in our hot-ass hotel room.
joshWe were. But I just have to reiterate how much I love this wine bar.
britI know. Well, we went back because we loved it so much.
joshMm-hmm. The... Like you had mentioned, the staff was so good, had such great recommendations. Um, they even gave us some tasters of stuff that they're like, "Oh, you should try this. You would like this."
britMm-hmm.
joshUm, and gave us, like, little chocolates and stuff to have with the wine- Mm-hmm just unprovoked. We didn't ask for it or anything. Just so great. It really made me want to go to more, like, small Portuguese towns just to be filled with these little wine bars.
britAbsolutely.
joshand then going back to the room and getting all of our stuff packed up and ready for our early morning in the hot room was insane. It was miserable
britIt was absolutely miserable. And then we're also, like, extremely, drunk or hungover, and w- I took a very long nap. maybe like two hours.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd then we started getting ready, and oh, I felt awful. And this room was so fricking hot. You went back down to the front desk and told them that, "Hey, it's still really hot." They ended up switching us to a different room.
joshYeah.
britAnd the room that they switched us to was really great.
joshYeah.
britIt was cool. the AC worked, and it had like three different beds in it- Mm-hmm so it was much larger than the room that we had. and it was actually in a separate entrance from the rest of the hotel, but it was a great room, and I still would recommend this hotel. Um, mainly because, you know, they switched us, and it was, what, 86 degrees in that room, and we had slept in that the night prior. So I'm glad we just got some sleep before our flight,
joshthey also had a shovel- shuttle service to the airport, uh, that we were able to book. Even though the train was right there, we didn't wanna mess around with any delayed trains or breakdowns or anything, so we just booked the shuttle service.
britYeah.
joshGot ourselves to the airport the next day, and we made it home without a single missed plane or delay.
britWhich is crazy because every trip we've taken recently has been delay, missed plane, missed plane, delay, delay, delay.
joshMm-hmm.
britSo this one was like, wow, right on time for everything.
joshI
britknow.
joshI know.
britIt's crazy. I think we did have one instance where we had to, like, book it a little bit.
joshYeah.
britbut we still had like 15 minutes to spare once we got there.
joshYeah, it was just like travel anxiety, like, "Oh my God, we gotta get there." Yeah. And then we got there, and we s- sat around for like 15, 20 minutes waiting, so.
britYeah.
joshSo that was our Portugal trip, and that was Lisbon.
britThat was Lisbon. Yeah, I really loved Lisbon. I do think that I could spend a little bit more time there.
joshMm-hmm.
britCause again, we were only there for a day and a half, and that one day we just got drunk.
joshNothing wrong with that.
britNo, but, we didn't fully immerse ourselves in Lisbon- Yeah like we did the other cities that we went to.
joshMm-hmm.
britwe had a lot of fun here, and I think it would be a good stop to go to if you're looking for a lot of history and some good food.
joshYeah. For sure. I think if we had more time, there was plenty to do there. We could have gone to a museum, gone a history tour, something like that. Obviously, some great food there, some great wine, as throughout Portugal. It's definitely the in and out hub, kind of, of Europe. There's- Yeah definitely a very busy airport, which we were very nervous about. It took us to... We got ourselves to the airport way ahead of time to make- Mm-hmm sure that we didn't have to deal with long lines, and there was still a long line that we had to wait in. it's, it's not a bad place to come in and out of.
britNo. But we were really anxious about it because we kept seeing TikToks and videos about the Lisbon Airport and how the line, like, wrapped around the entire airport, and we were like, "Oh, fuck." So we got there, like, three hours early.
joshAt least, yeah.
britAnd we had to wait, like, a half an hour for, to see where we can check our bags.
joshMm-hmm.
britAnd I walked around trying to find it, and I missed where it was.
joshIt was right behind us.
britBut anyways, we ended up finding it. but yeah, everything seemed to work out pretty well.
joshMm-hmm.
britWe were still waiting around in the Lisbon Airport for quite a while after- Yeah we got through security and found our gate and everything, so-
joshMm-hmm
britum, we had more than enough time. Yeah, I mean, we really didn't have any problems coming back.
joshNo. No, not at all. Again, as far as Lisbon goes, I could spend a couple more days there. Is it a place that I would ever consider living? No. It's a massive city, lots of people, very busy.
britYeah.
joshHeavy tourism, which isn't bad, just not my vibe, not our vibes- Yeah for a place to live. But a very cool place to visit.
britI completely agree with that. I do think that we need a couple more days there.
joshMm-hmm.
britUm, maybe our next trip to Portugal will make that happen. But, I think as far as living there, I don't think that we would really enjoy that. Mm-hmm. Not like some of the other cities that we went to, even on this trip-
joshYeah
britalone. So, yeah.
joshMaybe we will stay a couple days in Lisbon, or we will have to for sure if we ever go to Portugal and then go to the islands.
britOh, yeah.
joshSo there we go.
britThat sounds great.
joshMm-hmm.
britwe loved Lisbon. We'll definitely be back at some point. and we'll probably explore more of Portugal at some point as well.
joshFor sure. Definitely need to. Uh, looking forward to coming back to Lisbon at some point.
britYeah. next episode we will be talking about our time in Portugal as a whole. So we'll just kinda wrap it up and review all of Portugal. Don't forget to like, subscribe and follow on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube at wsmhtravels
