In this episode of 'Read Me Next', Carina and Pili dive into the wild journey through LJ Shen’s masterpiece Bad Bishop, a rollercoaster of violence, love, betrayal, and unbreakable bonds. We unraveled how a deceptively innocent 18-year-old girl, Lila, finds herself entangled in a brutal world of organized crime, arranged marriages, and dark secrets. From her faked intellectual disability to her fierce intelligence lurking beneath innocence, her character challenges every stereotype of the mafia princess trope. Meanwhile, Tiernan, the Irish mafia boss with a deadly past and a soft spot for her, is the king we all secretly root for—jealous, obsessive, protective, and devastatingly charming.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to Read Me Next, a Book Club But Make It a Podcast, where we have lots of feelings and no qualifications. What are we reading this week, Peely?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we're reading Bad Bishop by LJ Shen.

SPEAKER_01

A true masterpiece, in my opinion. Like this book, I am so happy to say that like, you know me. This is my bread and butter. My bread and butter, my cup of tea. All of this is this. And I'm so happy, like, this was like your real introduction because this was so good.

SPEAKER_02

Iconic. And I feel like this just kind of came out of nowhere. Out of the left field. We picked this randomly. I know. It was a great pick. Great fucking pick. The the reading gods were with us this week after the shit we've gone through. They said, you know what? They deserve it. We needed something.

SPEAKER_01

We needed something. And this was that something. This was it. So good. So so good. So this book was on Kitten Unlimited.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's a mafia romance. Dark Mafia romance. It's also on Hoopla. Shout out Hoopla. Oh my god. But this audio? Amazing. I feel like this is one of the best audios I've heard. Agreed.

SPEAKER_02

He was so good. She was amazing. I loved it. It was so, so good. I think I listened and read simultaneously. Immersive reading, if you would. Immersive reading exceptional. Probably like 90% of the book. It was so good. I loved listening to it. It was really, really good. So who were the narrators again? It was Lucy Rivers and Corbin King. Amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Both of them. I think this was the first time I've heard Corbin King. I don't think I've heard him before.

SPEAKER_02

It was my first audio by him too, but he is very famous on TikTok. He's one of the Teddy Hamiltons. He's one of the Teddy Hamiltons of the world. I mean, he did a great job. Amazing. So I loved his accent.

SPEAKER_01

So fucking good.

SPEAKER_02

I honestly was like, how am I gonna like an Irishman?

SPEAKER_01

Scared, right?

SPEAKER_02

No, I wasn't scared. I was just like, well, yeah, no, like nervous.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like I'm nervous for the audio. Like, no. He did it. No. Oh my god. Tieran in like this has he has it all. So good. Okay. Anyways, so it's also 450 pages-ish, which I think is very solid. I think it's like a good, it's not too short of a read to be like too squished into it. No.

SPEAKER_02

It was perfect. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It has like a lot of plot. So good.

SPEAKER_02

But so good at the same time. Alright, what'd you rate it? Five. Same. God. Because you know what? What I was also thinking. What? Edge of Darkness was like the latest dark romance we read. Edge of Darkness series. Yes. The trilogy. Can you read Cade Mitchell, Stacey Rhodes? Gotcha. The whole shit that went down there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It wasn't Mafia, but it was dark. And I liked it, but I liked this more. Oh, so good.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I could honestly like I was like debating on the six-star review. Oh, really? Yeah. No, it w it was that good. But like, I don't know. Honestly, I think if I like I'm gonna sit on it a little more, and I think it could get to a six-star read for me. So I loved it. So did I. Yeah. I thought it was so good. So good. So fun.

SPEAKER_02

I would say like four.

SPEAKER_01

Same.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I also really liked about this book. It wasn't like super focused on that, on like the smut. It was just like a like a plus.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. In the book.

SPEAKER_01

So cool. Oh god, I love this book.

SPEAKER_02

LJ. She did it. I think I have a girl crush on her. Bro, same. Have you seen her? By the way? She's beautiful. She's hot. Literally. I I stopped her TikToks today. I said, oh okay, LJ. Okay, author. Alright. Girly. Anyways. So fucking good. So so good. I really, really enjoyed this. I was so excited. I feel like, like you just said, it was like my introduction to mafia because the things we've read are haven't been like this. And this had everything in it. I was so excited. It was amazing. I'm like, will any other mafia compare to this?

SPEAKER_01

They're so good. But they're like, I love, see, like, I just love the mafia books. They're just so much fun. There's so much plot, but also so much like possessiveness, obsessiveness. All of the good things in a dark romance, you get it in the mafia books. Eat it up. Mm-hmm. So good. Eat it. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Alright. Well, let's talk about it. Yeah. What was the book about? Our FMC is Leela and she's 18. Oh, this is an age gap. Oh, yeah. So good.

SPEAKER_01

Arranged marriage. Oh, so good. Oh, God. I think that just has my heart in these mafia books. An arranged marriage. Yes. And the age gap I love. I know. We're both so we're both happy here.

SPEAKER_02

We were both very happy. So she's 18 and she's got she's deaf, but her whole life she has kind of been pretending or she has like this whole act going that she is intellectually like disabled. Disabled. Like this whole ruse came about because her mom was like, okay, I don't want you to marry into like the mafia. I don't want you to marry a mobster, you know, that they're evil, terrible husbands. Terrible husbands, they beat you, they rape you, all those things. So her mom was like, We're gonna have this ruse going where nobody's gonna know. And our MMC fucking Tierney Callahan, king, king, beautiful, the aka Deathless, amazing. He's this bad motherfucker. He is like menacing, but so yummy. Yes, so yummy. Amazing. Yeah, so I will say tell me he's up there with MMC's book boyfriends of the year.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna say, can we can we just pause for a sec? Of course. Like, we need to have different tops, I think. Like we have Theo, of course, right? But he is like completely different category than Tiernan. Yeah, you know what I mean? Like I agree. I can put Theo and Tiernan in the same level because they're completely different, but they're both my top.

SPEAKER_02

I agree.

SPEAKER_01

I loved him.

SPEAKER_02

I loved him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so I think he could be I can count him as one of my tops.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he could probably be like our top dark romance. Our top dark romance. Yeah. He's topping your Josh. That's what I was gonna say. Josh I loved, but I'm like, what can we like have like a third column for like dark romantic comedies? And then I'll put Josh up there. And then if we do fantasy, we can fucking Zayden up there. All right. You know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_01

We gotta make a chart.

SPEAKER_02

We gotta make a chart. We gotta make a whole flow chart Venn diagram type thing. Literally. See what's going on with all these men. But yes, I was thinking about it today. Out of the men that we've read this year so far, he's beat all of the legacy of gods. Ten thousand percent. A thousand. I do think he tops Cade Mitchell in The Dark Romance as well. Cade Mitchell's quest to darkness. Yes. Oh, 100%. Yep. Tier Nen was the best. I loved him. Not everybody. He was acts of service. He was touch her and die. He was I will call you.

SPEAKER_01

Also jealous. Oh romantic.

SPEAKER_02

Obsessive possessive.

SPEAKER_01

Out of it relative in a little deathless man.

SPEAKER_02

In a little deathless Irishman. Amazing. Oh man.

SPEAKER_01

Whatever. Okay, so yeah, let's get into the book because it was just so much fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So the thing about it is like we have to kind of tell the backstory of the families. Okay. So, well, kind of like all of the characters that are in there. So is the Kimorra supposed to be like the name of the mafia? Is the Kimorra?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So in different states are different. They're in the Kimorra, right? Which is the Italian mafia. Love. Right? Yeah. And there's the dad, the Don, Vello, the mom Chiara. Thank you. The mom Chiara.

SPEAKER_02

It was Luca, Achilles, Enzo, Leela, and he has a bastard child. A bastard child. A bastard son, who apparently he loves. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. The only one that he loves. Love. Ooh. Anyways. Okay, so that is the Italian mafia. Then you have the Russian, the Bratva. The Bratva, which I'm so like, I just love when they're all in this. It was amazing. So good. So it was Igor, he was the pecan. The pecan. And then Alex was his son. Correct. Alright, beautiful. And then Alex has a sister. Alex has a sister and two brothers. Yeah. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

All summy, Slava, and I don't know what the other one is. Katya. Thank you. All right.

SPEAKER_02

That's the Brava. Then the Chicago outfit. Sophia is like the mafia princess of the Chicago outfit, who is arranged marriage to Luca. Ate it up. Yes. Angelo. Oh my god, I could not.

SPEAKER_01

With all these, like you can just imagine all the books coming out, and I'm like, yes, yes, give it to me now. Have you seen Goodreads, all of the other books in the series?

SPEAKER_02

No. So many. Yeah, there's like seven, isn't there? Yeah, love that. Anyways. And Angelo is her brother. We don't know what's happening with him, but he's also part of the Chicago outfit. Yeah. And then you have the Irish mafia. Tyrone was the dad. Then Finton. And then Tiernan and Tierney were the twins. The twins. Okay, so the book essentially begins with a fellow's chapter. And he's like basically getting like he's really sick. He's about to die. And so he has to pick his successor. And so he says that he's going through all of his children, his bastard son, and also the man who married my daughter. And then it had Tiernan scratched out, so I was like, okay, we're locked in. Tiernan is gonna be the son-in-law. Uh-huh. And so it starts with his chapter, Tiernan's chapter. We get his POV, and he's in the basement with all of the brothers. And Tiernan has just killed Igor, the head of the Bratpa, the pecan. Because he has beef. A lot of beef. Lots of beef in this book. And so all of the brothers are like, bro, you can't just be killing fucking Bratpa members in our territory. Yep. You're gonna start a war. And so they were like, alright, we're gonna need, you know, like some restitution. So they took his eye. Yep. That's chapter one.

SPEAKER_01

That's chapter one. This holy shit. Literally, during that chapter, they were like, you know, like they started bluffing, like, okay, you know, blah, blah, blah. There was not no bluff. No. Like, literally, and it was so graphic. It was like, I felt the knife slide under my eye socket, and then it snipped the veins that connect my eye to my exceptional.

SPEAKER_02

Almost like disgusting. Crazy. Yeah. Love that shit. Love. It was so good.

SPEAKER_01

That was so good.

SPEAKER_02

Disgusting. Love.

SPEAKER_01

It was so good. Yeah. It was so, so good. So before we even read the book, the beginning, the dedication says to all the readers who complain that my heroes are always irredeemable jerks. I'm afraid I have terrible news. Oh, we're like locking. Yeah, I'm like, this is what I needed. This is like a book wrapped in a bow and given to me.

SPEAKER_02

Like you're like, okay, I'm gonna love this. Locked in. LJ did that. LJ did that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, so good. So I knew when I when I saw that, I sent a screenshot to Peely. I was like, Did you read this by the way? And I said, This is amazing. I'm so excited.

SPEAKER_02

We're gonna have a great time. We're gonna have a literal great time. Amazing. So he ended up being really funny. He was so funny.

SPEAKER_01

So fucking funny. Without trying. Absolutely not. He was hilarious. He really was. So yeah, like you were saying, in the beginning uh the first chapter, we get a lot of him, who he is. So this is when they're they're trying to, they're about to take off his eyeball, whatever. And this is Achilles talking. I see why the Rasputins call you deathless. You refuse to fucking die. And then he they say a bunch of stuff, and he goes, Maybe you're just bad at killing people. You know, maybe it's not me. Maybe it's you. That shit made me laugh. I was like, This is so funny. Like you're strapped to a chair, you're about to get your fucking eyeball scooped out, and you're just like feeling.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Ha ha ha heating these people. Yeah. And he called him like Freddie Krueger too at some point. It was so funny.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, it's so funny.

SPEAKER_02

So essentially, what happens after that and how the book kind of starts is he sees Leela right after he gets his eye scooped out. At first, he's like going to kill her because he's insane. And so he starts drowning her, and she's she's just like, you know what? Like it is what it is. He's gonna kill me, whatever. And so he stops and he's kind of like taken aback. He's like shocked with himself that he didn't kill her. She's shocked that he didn't kill her. And I was shocked he didn't kill her. I'm like, oh my god. So that whole scene happens, and that's how they get like introduced to each other. Nobody knows it happened. Oh, and he gives her the eyeball. Oh, yeah, he gives her the eyeball and he calls her the nickname. It was so good.

SPEAKER_01

So fucking good.

SPEAKER_02

Like we said, Luca has an arranged marriage with Sophia. So they have this big wedding on this private island that the family owns, and then after the wedding ceremony, somebody, we don't know who ends up raping Leela.

SPEAKER_01

I just was like so surprised that she ended up being pregnant in the book. Ah, like me too. I did not see that coming. I was like, how is this going to proceed in the book? What's gonna be the plot? I could not imagine her being pregnant with somebody else's child. Literally, it was insane.

SPEAKER_02

So she's pregnant with it with the rapist's child. Nobody knows who he is. And so the Ferrantes, which is the Italian mafia, they're like, okay, we need to do something about this. We can't appear weak to the people. Yeah. Like nobody can be, you know, out here assaulting her. Nobody should be raping the mafia princess. Yeah. Who's intellectually disabled. Excuse me. Yeah. So they come up with this plan to marry her off to Tiernan because they know he's gonna protect her. He's gonna find whoever, you know, assaulted her.

SPEAKER_01

This will kind of solve the problem of him killing the Russians on their territory. They're kind of like forming alliance against the Bratva.

SPEAKER_02

They're forming an alliance against the Bratva. Amazing. Mm-hmm. And so that's how we get the arranged marriage, and that's how we do it. And so it was funny because they call him to go to the mansion, right? So he goes to the mansion and they're all having a meeting in in Velo's office, right? So Velo's like, Leela's pregnant. And then it's Tiernan's POV and he goes, I see. Who the fuck is Leela? He's so fucking funny. He's so funny. I then oh my god, the narration was so good. It's so Velo's like, Rafaela, Leela, my daughter, and then it's Tiernan, and he's like, ah, Raffaella, the youngest. Mentally three, the lads at the poker tables whispered, would still put her a few dozen IQ points above Enzo.

SPEAKER_01

Bro, his beef with Enzo the entire book. So good. That was so funny.

SPEAKER_02

But I really like that he left Enzo to protect her. That was so cute. Anyways, thank God. Yeah. And so he agreed to the deal because then he was gonna have the whole Italian mafia behind his back, like you said, on alliance, so that way they could go and kill the Brava.

SPEAKER_01

So that way he could rule New York. Yep, because he had this like internal vendetta on his own side to kill Alex. Yeah, so tell us about that. Okay, so this was like a whole other part of the book, which was so much fun. Yeah. Like there was a plot within a plot, right? So as we said before, Tiernan was killing all these Russians in their territory, yeah. Yeah. And so it turns out Igor, which was the pecan of the Bratfa, right, cut out Tierney and Tiernan from the mom when she was pregnant and alive, which was very graphic. And but he did that because Tyrone accidentally killed his wife. Yeah. So it was just like this whole old drama that we had. Tiernan and Tierney were both stuck in the camp with Alex for 14 years. Crazy. Crazy stuff, right? So, of course, thank God he escaped. He learned ASL in the camp, which I thought was so cool. Love. Love. Love a good way to tie it back. How the fuck did this mobster learn ASL? Like this author? Thank you. She did it. Again. But, anyways, so I guess his personal vendetta ended up that he had to kill Alex before Alex killed him. Yeah. That was the entire reason for it.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it was also because he killed the pecan, so next pecan up is like, alright, he's gonna kill me, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, Alex was the next pecan.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Mm-hmm. There's like, it's only right that he kills me because I just killed his dad. Yep. So we eat of the entire story. There were flashbacks in the book too. Mm-hmm. So that was fun.

SPEAKER_01

So fun. It was crazy to me that Igor freaking cut these babies out of the mom because he shot his wife. What we do for love. What can we say?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I wouldn't do that. I guess, you know, the pecan. Pecan is a pecan. That's something the pecan would do.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, yep, yep. This is like a little side thing. You were able to catch on who the next book is gonna be about. Yeah. Yeah, right? So I highlighted this part here. It was um Achilles, I guess, talking to tyranny. And it goes, We both know I'm spreading nothing. You assigned me a chaperone, right? And it's talking about her legs, obviously. And I have a note here. I was like loving this enemies to lovers, beauty and the beast. Literally. So I was I'm curious.

SPEAKER_02

Do you know exactly what the deal is with them? Because it's not that Achilles is gonna be her arranged husband. Achilles gets to pick her suitor. Correct, right? But I think he's gonna pick himself. That's my thought. I know she hates she hates him. I don't know. And this whole thing that she's talking to the feds type shit, like something's gonna happen in the next one.

SPEAKER_01

No, I don't like that. Uh that makes me really nervous because she wants to bring down Achilles, right? He she wants to bring down the Ferrantes because he's causing this whole shit in her life.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, she just wants to leave. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And he won't let her. Fuck. So good. Anyways, I'm so excited.

SPEAKER_02

I hope we get everybody's stories. Well, because I'm thinking obviously the next one's tyranny and Achilles. Yep. Are we gonna get Luca and Sophia? I'm sure we will. Mm-hmm. I'd love to get a book about Alex.

SPEAKER_01

Ooh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Throw the pecan in there. Of course. Enzo, they've hinted that he's gay. Yep. I was gonna say I'm like, are we gonna get an MM romance in the series? I would love it. Cool. That's five. Yeah. Also, they they took Jerome or whatever, stepbrother. Was he not gonna be Tierney's suitor? Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think Achilles is gonna be able to handle it. That's like my thought. Achilles loves Tierney. Okay, this is like my theory. Yeah, my theory is Achilles loves Tierney, but he's this big and bad guy that probably thinks he's not worth love because he's ugly and all that shit. You know, he's a beast. Um this is the beauty and the beast, okay? He's a beast. They compared him to Frank Kruger, like he's ugly as fuck. Yeah. I was giving like quasimoto. Um, but yeah, so like I think that that was his idea to set her up with him and he's not gonna be able to go through with it. Well, because I'm also thinking on like, is Jerome gay and he's gonna be Enzo's lover? Ooh.

SPEAKER_02

Love. But also, where the fuck is like Tom gonna come in here? You see, because Tom could be the the love triangle with Tierney and Achilles.

unknown

Fuck.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. All these hypotheticals, who knows? Yeah, yeah. Anyways, so back to when they were actually talking about the arranged marriage, right? Before Tiernan like agrees to it, he goes, Doesn't she have severe intellectual disabilities? I asked. I'm not here to wipe someone's ass, no matter how beneficial it is to me. And so Achilles goes, The fuck is wrong with you? Don't you use derogatory language? So he's like I couldn't help but toss my head back and laugh. Achilles being inclusive was the height of comedy. I've seen that man rip the person's asshole with construction tools as a form of interrogation. But it made me laugh at being inclusive. That's so funny to me. Okay, so it ends up being that Leela goes to live with Tiernan in New York, like right above a pub. She's super innocent and so cute. She was like cutie patootie in my head at the beginning. She knew nothing. She knew nothing. She was so innocent. Yeah. Like her mom was totally, it was giving like tangled, like evil stepmother. She was such a fucking bitch. She didn't give her any like tools, nothing to help her. Like, she's like, You're gonna be an innocent, dumb little child.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. And that's it. Yep. I can't, like with her little pink dresses all the time. And the no when he when they brought over like the teacup set, I was like so disturbing. That was so disturbing. But I'm happy like the book portrayed her as an 18-year-old, which was good. Like they portrayed her really well when it like she would talk to Tiernan and stuff like that. Like you can tell she was 18.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know what I mean? Which I really liked about her.

SPEAKER_02

She had like the innocence.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. Which was good. Yeah, and like the attitude. The attitude. Yeah. Yeah, she was a teenager. So you know what I mean? Yeah. Which I thought that was cool.

SPEAKER_02

And so little by little, Tiernan starts kind of noticing like this bitch is she's smart as fuck. Like, what the hell's going on?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like how does she know enough to try to kill me on our wedding night? Amazing. Two times.

SPEAKER_02

Literally, two times. She would kind of give him like a little smirk here and there. She like would kind of give him a nod. Yep. Like, and so she started kind of opening up to him and he realizes that she's just fucking faking this entire time. And I was shocked. Did you think that he was gonna go straight to her brothers? No, but I loved it. I was like, not him finding out, and literally the next fucking day goes to tell them. Literally, I can't. No, so this part says, turn the elegant Ferrante princess into the Callahan delinquent. I literally love that. It was so good. Eat it up. That was my annotation for that. So good. And then literally on their wedding night, he tells her how to like cut somebody. So she cuts him and then she licks his blood off. And I was like, ooh, that was good. That was so good. And he was like, he literally put intellectually challenge my ass. She understands complicated assignments. Like she knew how to suture him. She knew like everything. She knew everything. Oh, she was so good.

SPEAKER_01

She was amazing. Okay, something that was funny to me before we get like more in the plot. He was a dick to her in the beginning of their marriage and was cheating on her, doing all these things because he kind of knew she was hiding something.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he wanted to like her, he wanted to out her.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he was trying to force her to come out, basically. Oh, and when she did? Man, no. And this part was crazy, it was so funny. So this is just like peak innocence. And this is her talking. She goes, They were both fully dressed, but he was doing something mean to her from behind, holding the same position my horse, surfer lady, took when the breeder brought a stallion to her. He was mating her. My mouth fell open, my throat parched with a panic and horror. To make matters worse, the idiot wasn't even entering the right hole.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I know.

SPEAKER_01

Like this poor. She had to Google everything. Literally, she had no idea what anything was. No. But that whole part was insane. That it was insane.

SPEAKER_02

He's literally having sex with Becky in the kitchen and she comes. In her clothes. In her clothes. And she's like, she has to pretend that she has no idea. Well, she low-key didn't have any idea what was going on. But also, like, she had to pretend like she tried to get the farce up. Yeah. So she goes like and starts making herself some like trouble. What the fuck? Ew. Becky's like, Your wife is watching. It was like, what's going on? I know. She's like just waiting for the microwave and like they're just fucking by guys, what's going on? Literally. That part was funny.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was funny, but it was good. Like, I like that these like the mafia books, they make you uncomfortable. Yeah, that was funny. You know what I mean? Like they make you feel that shit. Like, definitely read the trigger warnings in this book, obviously, if you haven't realized that.

SPEAKER_02

So another big part in the book, like we were saying, is that she was pregnant and she kept the baby, which was so cute. The whole first OBGYN appointment with her, again, how innocent she was, how much of an insane guy he was. Because he was just like not fucking around. No, I loved obviously. Tell me, tell me, tell me go, go, go. They get there, they get to the office. Her mom, fucking bitch, you're the goddamn worst. Your teenage child who was raped is going to the OBDYM for the first afford, and you're not gonna go with her? Who was raped and doesn't know anything? She's supposed to literally doesn't know anything. Go ahead. Anyways. So he he goes with her and they're at like the receptionist desk. And it's so funny because the receptionist is like, oh, the doctor's busy today, like she's gonna get uh Dr. So and so. He's great. Light Leela starts freaking out because she's like, it's fuck, it's like a male doctor, I'm not ready for that, whatever. And so he's like, I gotta he's like, uh no, uh, we're gonna see a female doctor, and she's like, no, like nobody else is civilian. He's like, No, no, I don't think you understand. He's like, if my wife is uncomfortable, I'm uncomfortable. And if I'm uncomfortable, everyone's gonna be uncomfortable. And not like the gun in the holster, like, yeah. King. Oh, I loved that. I love that. He's like, I don't think you want everybody uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh. Yeah. Alright. So good. And then the appointment itself, oh, he was so good to her.

SPEAKER_02

What a king.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. He was so cute. He was so good to her.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she had no idea what was going on. Podicita. That sucks. Literally. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Podicita. Porisita, and like, was what I'm talking about. Like, even when they went to the the shooting range and they like made out for a sec, and she she got wet and she's like, I think I had an accident.

SPEAKER_02

Like, oh my god. I know. I feel like that really played into like her mom having like fucked her like her entire childhood. Obviously, an 18-year-old would know what the fuck is going on. Yeah. But she was just like, like, even everything. Like, she's like, when she found out what Amazon was, and he linked her, like, he linked his credit card. Not knowing what Wi-Fi is. Insane. Insane.

SPEAKER_01

So I felt so bad for her. No, she had a rough. But I really liked how he was so good at explaining everything to her. Like, he never once like laughed at her like she thought he would. Like, like when the whole thing happened when they were making out, he was like, Your body's just preparing you for sex. Yeah. Like, he's like, it's normal.

SPEAKER_02

No, I love that part too when they were making it out. Because she was like, Do you think we're doing it right? And he's like, I don't care. It was so cute. I had that written out. It was so good. So, anyway, so like we were saying, she's pregnant, and like she's obviously nervous because they haven't found her attacker. And so there's one point where he's like, No, you're gonna start sleeping in my room. And so he goes, I'm an excellent marksman and a terrible enemy. Go to sleep, sweetheart. Nothing can hurt you now that I've laid claim on you. Uh I could not. So good.

SPEAKER_01

Love. Love a protective king.

SPEAKER_02

Love a protective king.

SPEAKER_01

Eat it up. Oh my god, no. This is so funny. From the glimpse I caught the night he was with Becky, his thing was the size of a Dyson Airwrap. Stop. Oh my gosh. Like they they made, like she wrote this book like real time. Yeah. Yeah, which I thought was really funny. Yeah, that's so funny. Now, another part when he started like looking through her room, when he saw the sketch of Tate Blackthorne, he was like, Are you in love with Tate Blackthorne? Like, that shit was so funny. Like he got his first like little feelings of jealousy. And he's like, I don't know why, but I want to kill him. He really did want to kill him. He did. No, you know, I have a quote here. Tell me. That I loved. Tell me. It was so cute. I was like, okay, this is peak author writing. Again, LJ, that girl.

SPEAKER_02

That girl.

SPEAKER_01

It goes, the moon was a constant. It appeared every night, be it winter or summer, providing him with the kind of stability the pesky sun never could. I just like that was so beautiful. And like that's why he would call her that. That's why he would call her the moon. Beautiful. Like, I loved that. That line was like so beautiful to me because then I started thinking about it. I was like, oh my god, like you know what? That's so true. Literally. Like a lot of like the winter states, like they don't have the sun like six months of the year. Yeah. So cute. I was just like beautiful writing. My god, Enzo being so funny. Loved Enzo. Mommy and Daddy aren't breaking up after all. Hug it out, bitches.

SPEAKER_02

There's another really funny part where I guess it's like Tiernan and Tierney are talking about Leela and everything, you know, like how he how he's kind of falling for her. And so he goes, It's like Leela must have been a lizard in a previous life. She liked the thermostat at 76. And then he goes, I preferred 49. We settled on 76.

SPEAKER_01

Love. That's so good.

SPEAKER_02

I love that. Okay, so then towards the end of the book, Tiernan is gonna take Achilles and Luca to go kill Alex in Las Vegas. And so it was really cute. I was tearing up, also super emotional, very much crying. That's what I sent to the picture. When he was saying goodbye to her. Yeah. No. And she was like, don't go. And he was like, I like I w like I would stay. Yeah, he almost didn't go. He almost didn't go. And then when he put the cross on, like, I love that part. When he put the cross on, I was like, that is so nice. That's so thinking of the other person. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Just giving them that extra, you know, you know what I mean? Yeah. Like somebody prays for you. He's just like the things he would say. So he goes, I would never hurt you like that. I found my voice opening my eye. Even if I wanted to, even if you begged me to, even if you cheated on me, even if you killed me. And then because it felt too raw, too real, I added, protecting you is a compulsion at this point. I'd stop the night from falling if darkness scares you, Leela. I mean, cut the cameras. So beautiful.

SPEAKER_02

So nice. I was like, No, and we didn't even say she starts speaking because he brings over the receptionist from the OBGYN to her bed and she goes, What did she exactly say?

SPEAKER_01

Something tangible snapped inside me. I felt it crack my chest open, and all the anger rushed out like puss. I'd had enough. Go ahead, fuck her. That's what she said. Yeah. I shape my lips around the words, knowing they were understandable enough after years of speech therapy. I'll go find myself a plaything too. I love that. And then he ran after her. He ran after her and goes and he goes, She speaks. Ah bro.

SPEAKER_02

So fucking good. I loved it. Anyways, okay, so we were saying Achilles, Luca, and Tiernan go to Las Vegas to kill Alex. Alex kind of hints that he there's a mole in their operation. He knew the entire time they were coming. I loved Alex. I love Alex. Leosha? I also get it. Like Tiernan can get it. Luca can get it. Enzo can get it. Even Achilles can get it at this point.

SPEAKER_01

All of them can get it. All of them. All of them. Anyways, Alex, Leo.

SPEAKER_02

We'll get to Fenton.

SPEAKER_01

We'll get to fucking Fenton. Did you feel like Alex was gonna try to kill him too? Like in the whole book, I was like, I don't think Alex is gonna kill you. And then we got to that part and I was like, I fucking knew it. Really? Yeah, like I felt like their relationship as kids were so strong.

SPEAKER_02

Like, I'm like, why are you gonna try to kill him? Well, I didn't know how serious the mafia is. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So what they have make alliances like nothing? No, he they should have killed each other. Oh but that's what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In my head, they were gonna kill each other. Like, I was like, and I was really nervous because when we get Tiernan's POV and he's like, This is too easy. Yeah, and it's like it's like now it's new we were coming. I was like, oh my god, this is a trap. Because like I was reading it and I was like, this is too easy.

SPEAKER_01

This really is too easy.

SPEAKER_02

What's going on? I really didn't think that it was gonna be like, bro, handshake, we're cool, you know, we're we're forming an alliance. I did not think that was gonna happen. Even as it was happening, I was like, who's gonna stab each other? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Same, same.

SPEAKER_01

For a while, I was also like, Are we sure?

SPEAKER_02

Like the next book's like something's gonna happen?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. No, I don't think so. No, they're gonna I think they're I think they're besties. I love that. Yeah, because even at the end of this book, we all know what he's what happened. But at the end of this book, he was like, Alex has always been my real brother.

SPEAKER_02

Oh king. We love Leosha and Coshay. Super cute. They deserve each other. The brothers from other mothers.

SPEAKER_01

And that entire time when that was happening, Finton was calling him. Oh that had me like, Why are you not answering the phone?

SPEAKER_02

So while that's happening in Ella in Las Vegas, Tierney and Leela get into a car accident. Somebody T-bones their car, obviously intentional. And they don't know like if she's gonna survive, if the baby's gonna survive, there's a bunch of blood loss, like everything's going on. And so Tiernan stops what he's doing. He's like, guys, I gotta go. We're dipping. And so they rush back to New York to the hospital. Thank God everybody was fine. But that's like when he realized, like, oh, I love Leela. I love this baby, I don't care. And Tierney was like, your priorities have changed. Thousand percent no. And when Achilles was like, You didn't even ask about fucking Tierney, he's like, What kind of fucking brother are you? I said, Yeah, Achilles. And he's like, Shit. Yeah, he's like, You're right. But so the entire time they're trying to get to the bottom of who the hell her attacker was. So I thought it was Angelo. I was like, I didn't think it was gonna be Tate. I thought it was Angelo because I'm like, there's really nobody else.

SPEAKER_01

He was really weird from the beginning.

SPEAKER_02

He was really weird from the beginning.

SPEAKER_01

He didn't like that Kira was like, fuck off. So I'm like, I didn't I didn't get a hint of who it ended up being until it was like it has to be somebody who knows like the the pub. You know, when she was saying that? Like I was like, nah. Like I like the the thought like flew through my head, but I was like, no, that's not that's not gonna be it.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, he literally hated that. No, no, I could not guess who the fuck it was gonna be. So you were like really like fuck. Well, the only like the only inkling was he Tiernan was talking to Finton and Tierney at one point, and he was like, I'm not gonna say everything because I don't know who to trust.

SPEAKER_01

And I was like, oh fuck. I highlighted that too, because I was like, shit, no. And then right here, I couldn't trust anybody anymore. I don't like this. I did not like that. It was I was like, oh shit.

SPEAKER_02

But then in my head, I'm also like, she hasn't introduced enough characters that aren't like related to her. Yep. And I'm like, it's not gonna be one of her brothers. Yep. And it's not Tiernan.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

We're running out of guys. If it's not Angelo and if it's not Tate, there's really nobody else that could fucking be.

SPEAKER_01

I was just like annoyed at this point. I don't want to say annoyed, but I was like, let the let the men do their job at this point. Hello. When super feminist of you. Bro, when Tiernan was gonna go meet with the attacker and she follows him and kills the man, and literally in the same freaking thing, he's like, I knew he was there. I'm like, God damn it, Leela. Like, there's no way Tiernan was that fucking stupid in this point, being deathless for so long that he didn't know somebody was right above him to kill him. I don't know. I don't know, like I believed it. No, I was like, Leela, what are you doing? Like, I promise you he got under control. And he did. But you know, he didn't tell her yeah, literally, another like king of part of this man. He doesn't need to tell her that. He's like, I'm not gonna make her feel bad. I'm not gonna make her feel shitty after he she saved my life. You know what I mean? Literally, how funny. Oh my god, no, but it was so descriptive at that part where he was like, I dropped to my knees and like was heaving because he was so scared because like almost killed her. Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, he did shoot her, but she dug. Yeah, she dug, whatever. But like I saw that. No, no, like I was so nervous. You know? No, and then when she like stepped out of the car, she was like, hey.

SPEAKER_01

Literally. Literally. I have here, see Lila, he is not stupid, like 10,000 exclamation points.

SPEAKER_02

God, I hated that part. Yeah, that was intense. But you know, I feel like this book didn't give me as much anxiety and heart palpitations as Edge of Darkness. Like, I was enjoying this type of roller coaster that we were on. Yeah. The other one I was just like anxious the entire fucking time I was reading. I'm like, what the hell's gonna happen? I'm nervous, everything's gonna go to shit. Like, who's gonna die? This, that. Like, this was like really a nice change of pace.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, in this book, like they had a semblance of control. Yeah, and I think that's what it is. Maybe that you probably like. Yeah. Control forgive me. I yeah, cog it, call it, clock it.

SPEAKER_02

Like that's they did, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know what I mean? It wasn't like they were waiting for something to happen.

SPEAKER_02

Right, like their enemies were coming to them. Yeah, no, they were going to the enemy. Exactly, exactly. I think you're right. I think you like that.

SPEAKER_01

I do like the control.

SPEAKER_02

You're right, you're right, you're right.

SPEAKER_01

Tiernan gifting her like something small and then it'll be a whole fucking estate. Literally. And she was like, what? Literally, girl. It was beautiful. The baby shower was cute. Super cute. I love that. Like, after her and her mom had that heart to heart, she was like, She's been the perfect mother ever since. And I'm like, thank you. Like, I like that. I like when the mom and the daughter make up and they're good. They needed to. Yeah. Girl. Yeah. Shut up. Yeah. And she ended up not being bellows. That was which is another part. Yeah, I had an affair with a Swedish painter.

SPEAKER_02

I'm like, okay, random as fuck.

SPEAKER_01

And they're like, oh, that's where you get your artistic creativity from. Literally. It's like this is why I don't look like the rest of them. No. And the dance the dancing in the house. So cute. So cute. No, and the part that I thought was even cuter. She goes, You waltz. I heard my voice. It sounded slurred in comparison to my husband's, but it was pretty. I liked it. It was kind. Also, that part, so cute. So cute. But then he goes, For you, I do, he confirmed. We're not talking about the dance classes I took last week, though. Bro. So cute. Because that's so like real. Like, would you expect this mafia Irish man to know how to fucking dance? No. So he took classes.

SPEAKER_02

God, he's a king. Love. He was very acts of service. I hated that. He was beautiful. So yes, please. He was very much like a think of Lila above himself for everything. Yep. So we get to the part, like right towards the end of the book, that she goes into labor. So she's at the house and it cracked me the fuck up because it goes, it's Tiernan's chapter, and it goes, Lila went into labor at her new house, surrounded by enough medical staff to open a field hospital. It goes, there were four nurses, one doula, two OBGYNs, one pediatrician, and it had an ambulance on standby. Some would call it deranged. I called it adequately cautious. And then it goes, and so followed the trail personnel. Is she giving birth or being exercised? I fucking died.

SPEAKER_01

Bro, that was hilarious.

SPEAKER_02

And then when she didn't have him in the room, I was like, girl, get him in the room.

SPEAKER_01

No, sorry. Right after that part when the freaking prosciutto car came. Uh-huh. 15 different types of prosciutto. She missed prosciutto during the pregnancy. Me. I was like, dang, that sounds nice. Yeah. A whole fucking part of it. Agree though. Him not being in the room was kind of funny in the beginning, but then like she didn't want her mom and email there. She's like, get the fuck out of here.

SPEAKER_02

Get them out of the zip code.

SPEAKER_01

Now. And then that's when he realized the unmistakable rare and familiar shade of dark red, burgundy of the Callahan's red. All I saw was red. Raised took over my entire fucking being. Binton. Binton was the rapist.

unknown

Fuck.

SPEAKER_02

Fuck. Fuck.

SPEAKER_01

Benton.

SPEAKER_02

He was the goddamn worst. That was like. No, and you know I was like, no. You know what got me? What? That he had the fucking roses at the bar.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Thank you so much for mentioning that. Because I was like, Binton trying to be like, I didn't mean to, this and that. No, fuck you, bro. That was psychotic as fuck. You had the roses at the bar. Fuck off saying that you would never have meant to hurt her because you were continuously doing that. If you did that at the bar, like fuck you. Insane. Oh.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, you slimy piece of shit. You slimy motherfucker. I did not like that. Thank you, Kaylee. Because I was shocked. I said, Finton, you son of a bitch.

SPEAKER_01

You son of a fucking bitch.

SPEAKER_02

Leaving the goddamn flowers there.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-mm-mm. And then he's like, I tried to finish her off in the hospital room when you were in Vegas. But Enzo was there. Thank you, Enzo. Thank you, Enzo. But fuck Finton. Yeah, no. Finton also thinking that Tiernan was like, okay, we're good. Yeah. Fucking idiot. That's what he and that's exactly what Tiernan was saying. Because Tiernan's like, how do I share blood with this guy? He's so fucking stupid. So stupid.

SPEAKER_02

No. And so what does he do? He shot him in the spine. Then he cut off his dick. Cut off his balls. Oh, he cut off his balls. Insane. Yep. And then what did he do? And then he shot him in the face. Love that. Yep. Very much deserved. Very much deserved. The fact that Finton thought he was gonna live was absurd. So bro. Bro. And that's when Do you know your brother? Yeah, literally. And that's when you know how you said that Alex was more of a brother than Finton never was. Love. Mm-hmm. And Finton ended up being the fucking mole. Mm-hmm. So he paid for that. Mm-hmm. Also, Tierney giving him a heads up. I was like, bitch. But then he she's like, it's always fun to like the prey.

SPEAKER_01

So of course, frickin' Alex took the fall for Finton for it to not be, you know, weird or whatever. Love that. So Leela goes, Oh Tiernan, my brilliant husband, who taught me how to shoot, how to dance, how to overcome my trauma, knew exactly how intelligent I was, and yet he foolishly thought I hadn't figured out what Finton's disappearance meant. I knew Janara was Finton's. The hair gave it away, of course, but there were other telltales, and she goes into a bunch of other stuff. Um so she goes, he'd never know that my memory returned to me sometime during the 32nd week of my pregnancy. I had been biding my time waiting for him to find out about Finton on his own, and that if he hadn't finished him, I'd have done it myself. I was like, what the fuck? I literally was like, what did I write here? What the hell?

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Crazy. I can't believe she remembered. Yeah. Ugh, but it was so good. What do you think about that? That she remembered? Yeah, and that she remembered she didn't say anything. I think like knowing Tiernan's personality, like he would have wanted to figure it out himself. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Obviously, if he didn't figure it out, then she could have told him. Yeah. But he figured it out.

SPEAKER_01

Also, like maybe the fact that that was his brother that scared her a lot. Maybe, yeah. But it was so good. I loved this book. It was a good plot twist.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't I didn't think it was gonna be him.

SPEAKER_01

I loved it. No, I literally like it like flew through my head. But like I didn't dwell on it at all. No. When he said the fucking red hair, I was like, fuck. So I felt that.

SPEAKER_02

Unmistakable Callahan.

SPEAKER_01

I said, ah shit.

SPEAKER_02

God damn.

unknown

Fuck it.

SPEAKER_02

I love that for him though. Maybe it looks just like him. Love. So cute. So cute. Yeah, but very, very good read. I'm so excited to read the second one. So the second one comes out soon. I don't know if it's March 31st or April 7th, right? Something somewhere around there. We'll find out. It's called Twisted Pawn. It's about Achilles and Tyranny. So fucking exciting. So excited for that. I love.

SPEAKER_01

So you want to get into good reads? Let's do it. Okay, so this is a five-star review. No, stop it right now. I am so obsessed with this book. It's not even funny. I went into this literally thinking I was gonna hate it, and it ended up being one of my favorite mafia books ever. This is seriously sick and twisted and unhinged and insane. And I was sat for every second of it. I didn't want it to end. Please, please check your trigger warnings and no, this is extremely dark. Love. Yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. She goes and says a bunch of things and goes, and the plot twist? No, I'm so gagged. I also love the side character so much. I need Achilles and Tyranny's book now. I just know this whole series is gonna eat. I'm actually gonna pass away. This was so good. So funny. I love her. She's so funny. It says, Two boring and problematic stars. Pregnancy by rape is a delicate matter. Nuance is important. The story is not good. It's actually a little boring and handles problematic issues in a lazy manner. I love problematic storylines, but it has to be delicate.

SPEAKER_02

That's not dark mafia. I'm like, what?

SPEAKER_01

Delicate? You're looking for delicate in a mafia series?

SPEAKER_02

Don't read it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, anyways. This this review made me laugh. It's a four and a half stars. And it says, Of course I was gonna like this, as if I needed further proof that I have a weakness for completely unhinged fictional men. And then he goes, Ooh, Reese and Monty completely ruined me in the best way. At the time of me picking up this book, they were the only couple I wanted to gush about, and moving on from them felt almost impossible. But the moment I finally locked in with this story, I couldn't put it down. This book is amazing in the most chaotic way. It's crazy, sick, twisted, and also made me laugh way more than I could have expected from a dark romance. Amazing. Oh funny. I was like, oh, me too.

SPEAKER_02

Literally. Reza Monty Slade. Oh, I forgot about Monty at the beginning of the fifth column.

SPEAKER_01

The daddies. The daddies column. They need to be added. Monty's up there. Oh my god, it's so funny. We need to add them to the chart. Okay, so this is a five-star, and it says, So again, we listen to our Lord of the Underworld when she tells us to check your trigger warnings. This is definitely another one of those books, my love, so please check it before diving in. This is just another book that will not be for everybody, and that's perfectly okay. Just if it's not for you, respectively, stay over there. And I really do mean it with love because your mental space matters, but also because at the same time, great books don't deserve bad reviews due to you picking the wrong cup of tea. This is a one-star review. Hated this book and cheating. Major DNF. How weird. Yep. And it says I could have put zero stars, I would have, and before anyone says to check the warning, the trigger warnings, I'm still pissed off. And she's like, I'm sick of the author writing awful men and women who are treated horribly and used for everyone else's advantage. Find a new plot. Also, the drama is BS when he completely sleeps with another woman in front of her. I'm like, girl, get out. I literally wrote shut up on here because I hated that so much. Anyways, as we continue, six-star read. This was the perfect comeback. I absolutely adore this book. I felt the tension, the obsession, the fall into love, and that ending. Holy fuck. I expected Angelo to be involved from the beginning, but I definitely didn't see that scenario coming. Honestly, one of my favorite reads of the year. Yes, same. Same girl. I really liked it and I loved it. Like, it was such a good mafia book. It was so good. All of it. The plot, the characters, all of it was so good. This is a five-star, and it says, Oh, Tiernan, the things I would do for this man are not for this app. Yep. Okay. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Another five-star review. It says, I loved, love this book. The MMC was totally unhinged and unapologetic, which is what I crave in my dark romance men. The FMC was actually also quite unhinged, and I really love their dynamic. Everything about this book was fabulous. Couldn't put it down. That's true. She was hella jealous too. I loved her. Yes, but like this is exactly what you look for in this dark romance stuff. You're not expecting delicate. Thank you, Peely. That's absurd. God, I can't. This is a one star and it says DNF, the tropes were atrocious. My inner feminist was clutching her pearls for dear life in the worst way. Okay. Got it, girl. Another one star. DNF'd one chapter in. Do not want to be reading about an eyeball getting taken out five pages in. Alright, well, that I understand. Like if it's too gory for you, I get it. DNF him because he cheated on her?

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, girl. Anyways, last one. It's a five star review, and it says, What a fantastic book. It has everything I expected from a mafia novel. The Plot is very good, fast-paced, action-packed, complex characters, betrayals, and loyalties. Our protagonists have had very difficult pasts, each in their own way. Their marriage is one of convenience, but it will be a strong union between two mafia families that will give people a lot to talk about. I couldn't put it down. I wish I could read more books like this, but check your trigger warnings and keep in mind that the strongest stuff is at the beginning. I love Tiernan, that crazy funny guy who will do anything for his people. Then she quotes protecting you is a compulsion at this point. I'd stop the night from falling if darkness scares you, Leela. King. King. Love. What a fun read.

SPEAKER_02

I loved it. I'm so happy we read this. Literally so good. I'm so excited for the next one. Same. I mean. I want to read it like right now. Oh, that's why. Mm-hmm. I'm sad it's over. But it was really good. What a good book. I'm so excited. I'm like now, like, all right, let's get into these mafia men. I see what the hype's about. You see what the hype's about. Just how you were with romanticy. I'm getting the hype with the mafia men.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

As you should. Yeah, I find. So good. I need I feel like this is my first good introduction to Mafia Men. Welcome to the dark side. It's a pleasure to be here. It's a pleasure to be here. So fucking hot. Alright, let's get out of here.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, looks like we are wrapping it up for the week. Read responsibly, guys. Or don't
