Who would you hook up with? I would hook up with Okay.
SPEAKER_03Oh sorry, no, I would hook up with Oh Okay.
SPEAKER_00And friend zone? What?
SPEAKER_03Six flags. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I would ride that roller coaster over and over.
SPEAKER_01Alright, Susie. Who would you marry? I'm gonna marry. I want that forever. I just want you to know that I hooked up with him.
unknownI hope that doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but he's marrying me. So it's fine. I just want this for the first time.
SPEAKER_03The past is the past.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's alright. He chose me.
SPEAKER_02He's a chef. I kick him around for the food. Visually, looks great. Real life? No.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Baby. Now that I've found you, I can let you go.
SPEAKER_00Speaking of unable to let go. Yeah. Welcome back to Plot Twist Please, where we sip, flip, and spill the tea on books and booze. I'm Cass. I'm Bet and I's Susanna. Okay, so last week we posted a reel on everything. And it had two very delicious, specific men in it. They were very familiar faces, which led to many comments from our viewers asking for an episode on this particular topic. So here we are. Today's amazing. Maybe we have a hardship for us to make this decision. Very hard. I was like, as soon as people commented, I was like, yes, done. Because I can't stop talking about it within our group. So let's just talk about it with everyone. So today we're heading back to Briar You to talk about the men who single-handedly destroyed our expectations, our standards, and convinced us that every single university in North America. I got it, is apparently overflowing with over six feet hockey players who are obsessed with one woman and emotionally stable. That's right, we are talking off campus, and don't worry if you're also in a delusional relationship with one of the Briar U boys, kind of like us, or multiple, we're here to tell you you're very much not alone because same.
SPEAKER_03Welcome. So today's drink of the episode is if you didn't see it already, caffeine Starbucks. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, we had alcohol last time.
SPEAKER_01No, this is a very good thing. We did our second time having Starbucks.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01What's your order? Grande iced caramel macchiato this time.
SPEAKER_00I did get light ice. I saw that. I remembered. So good. And lactose-free. Perfect.
SPEAKER_03I think I had this one last night, the Grande iced hazelnut oat shaken espresso dip.
SPEAKER_00And I'm trying the toasted coconut cream cold brew. Which looks really good. So yummy. It's very good.
SPEAKER_01It's just you're not getting any hints of the foam.
SPEAKER_00I know. I want to stir it in there, but it's fine. Before we jump onto the ice, what's everyone reading? Do you want me to go? I'll go.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm reading Wicked is the Reaper by Nisha J. Thule. I see you guys are have been body reading the last couple weeks. You just finished it. Yeah, I was gonna say, I was like, are you following me? Well, because we had talked about reading Feral is the Beast, but I was like, when I went to go download it to read it after. It's book two. I know, it's book two. I was like, oh. They don't seem connected so far, but oh, okay. I just I'm like 10% in, but it's like 178 pages.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I saw actually check them out and I was like, it's just a wee. I looked at the reviews and they're like, yeah, it's explicit scenes. So I was like, there are. I might read them. Is it good? I enjoyed it. Okay. It's good so far. That's good. Yeah. Are you gonna finish it today?
SPEAKER_03Probably. It actually took longer to get to the sex than I thought it would for such a small book.
SPEAKER_01I like that.
SPEAKER_03So I'm doing Pharaoh is the Beast, which is book two. It's a bunch of cursed captors.
SPEAKER_01I can't get over how tiny your Kindle is. That should be illegal.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_00And she's got her font so small. Everything about it's just mini.
SPEAKER_01I tried like, but how Tyler has his really small too. It's normal. It's normal.
SPEAKER_03It's size comparison.
SPEAKER_01Yours is literally called the mini. Tyler has his font like best size too.
SPEAKER_00I was like, this is don't know how you do it. That would cause my eyesight to get worse. My eyes would be so crossed.
unknownYeah, right.
SPEAKER_01How am I supposed to read that in my head? Right? Yeah, with your eyes. Crossed. I am reading Phoebe Berman's Gonna Lose It by Brooke Averick. It's her debut novel. And it's actually really good. It's about a well, I think you guys might like it, even though it is like a little bit of a different genre than what you typically read. You might be more open to it.
SPEAKER_03Is it like a pure romance?
SPEAKER_01I don't know if it's pure romance. It's this girl is 30 years old and she's a virgin. Like she is this like a Bridget Diary maybe kind of like that. Yeah, maybe there is yearning, but she basically has to choose between three guys that she likes to lose her virginity to. But she has a lot of anxiety around like intimacy and that kind of stuff. So she hasn't done anything with anyone, and that's why she's made it like her goal by 30 to lose her virginity in 30 days. I'm like 60% in to be determined.
SPEAKER_03I would say if you're at 60% and there's still not a strong urn, it's probably not going to make it to the urine club.
SPEAKER_01I feel like the strong yearn-well, there is yearning, but it's hard because it's like divvied up between three men.
SPEAKER_00That's okay though, because Susie's Urn Club is not just about the urn, it's about the spice being optional.
SPEAKER_01So that's true. And there's no spice so far.
SPEAKER_03But our spice chat club is in the world. And that is mandatory. Spice it's mandatory.
SPEAKER_01I'd actually say that finding books that have spice in it is easier than finding books that have no spice and a lot of yearning. I'm having a lot of trouble.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm going through my old reviews, like trying to find more books to feature. Review.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And feature and review. I haven't been able to like find any books recently, apart from the last one that I read, the charmed leaf legacy ones. Yep. That fit the criteria. That's my homework.
SPEAKER_00So speaking of books, by the time this comes out, we'll be in June. So our book club pick of the month is The Caretaker by Marcus. Clearer? Clearer? Spell it out clear. K-L-I-E-W-E-R. Clear? Clearer. Clear? It's something. Yeah. I'm sorry. Anyway. Marcus K. The Caretaker. It is a paranormal. Paranormal horror. Horror. Yeah. I'm excited. I'm very excited for that one.
SPEAKER_01See, I can read about paranormal horrors. I can't watch the paranormal horrors.
SPEAKER_00So if you want to read along with us, go check us out on Plot Twist Please on Fable. Join our book club and read along with us in June. Let's get into it with a little Mary friend zone or hookup with. Okay. Briar Human Edition. We've got Garrett Graham. We've got John Logan. We've got Dean DeLaurentis and John Tucker. Why did I see say Dean Lor DeLorentes like that? Beth, go ahead.
SPEAKER_04Oof.
SPEAKER_03Who would you marry? John Logan. Ooh. He's the fix-it boy of the group. True. Yeah. Other than his, they kind of touch on it a bit in the show, but they really talk about it, I think, a lot more in the books. Um, his weird crush with Anna. Yes. I could be wrong, but in the show, they kind of make it seem like he's had a crush on her for a while. Whereas I think in the books it developed when she started coming around.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. He didn't really know who she was before.
SPEAKER_03That's what I thought. This kind of comes up later, like during his book, uh, Graham says something to him and he kind of realizes that it wasn't necessarily her that he had a crush on.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03It was their relationship.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03He longs for a relationship like that.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So I haven't. Spoiler. I have not read the books, but I plan to. No spoiler. There might be spoilers.
SPEAKER_03Spoilers in this because I think of some disclaimer.
SPEAKER_00Yes. That's the word I was looking for. But I plan to, because I did the same thing with Heated Rivalry. I watched the show first and then I read the books. So I'm going to do the same thing with this.
SPEAKER_03I'm definitely a believer of if there is a show or movie, you're better to do that first before the books. Because I do think if you do the books first, you don't enjoy the show as much. No, you I think you judge it so much harsher.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm finding the opposite. Really? Yeah, because so after our last episode where we discussed like us reading the off the campus series, you asked me if I've read them all, and I was like, yeah. No, I haven't.
SPEAKER_00I read the first two. I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_03I didn't think you'd finish it. I was like, I'm pretty sure I kept going. And you're just like, I'm still on book two.
SPEAKER_01And I'm like, I'm on number four. Yeah. I I read the first two, and so after watching the show, I wanted to read the third book, which is a score, Dean and Allie's love story. Yeah. Which, you know, we saw glimpses of that in off-campus the show. I had such a hard time. Like, I enjoyed the first two books before the show was a thing. Yeah. Because I read them last year. But after watching the show, already having like a picture in my head of what the characters look like, um, how their love story took place in the show, reading about it in the book, it was completely different how it unfolded. And she was also like blonde in the book. Yes. So it was like hard to kind of connect the two. Allie was?
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01Interesting. Yeah. So and then like their whole, yeah, it's not the same thing.
SPEAKER_03Interesting in books.
SPEAKER_01Like, yeah. Yeah. She just wasn't, it wasn't the same. Their love story didn't unfold the same way. And so for me, I was like, what I wanted to read about specifically was like not happening. And I was like, great, I'm not gonna get the answers that I want from the worst. Yeah, so I find the opposite. Okay, who would you hook up with?
SPEAKER_03Uh, I would hook up with Graham. Okay. Oh, sorry, no, I would hook up with Dean. Oh, okay. And friend zone? Graham.
SPEAKER_00What? Interesting.
SPEAKER_01Reasons? Why?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I need explanations. My love, like my receiving love language is acts of service. And I feel like John Logan would give me that. Yep. He's very hands-on, fix it, Mr. Fix It in the group. Yep. Hook up with Dean. Obvious reasons. For obvious reasons. Six flags. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I would ride that roller coaster over and over. I'm not a huge fan of Tucker. I wasn't a huge fan of him in the book. So I'm not a huge fan of him in the show. Um, so that just leaves Graham. And as much as I hate to put him in the friend zone, I think he's just the only spot that's left.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So we would be maybe we would have dabbled in one another early on before we friend zoned. Fair.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. All right, Susie.
SPEAKER_03Who would you marry?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna marry Dean Di Waurentis.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I want that forever. I just want you to know that I hooked up with him.
SPEAKER_01I hope that he's yeah, but he's marrying me, so it's fine. I just want the past. The past is the past. Yeah. It's alright. He chose me. So we're fine. Okay. Uh who would you hook up with? Wogan. I think. Uh no, wait, Garrett Graham. Okay. I would hook up with Garrett Graham because he's got like that broody, like mysterious vibe to him. The smile's good. I wasn't a I didn't find him that attractive, if I'm being honest. Dean was the most greatest one. I don't know. I just didn't. It's the hair.
SPEAKER_03Attractiveness, like they they kind of go like this for me. Like it that they're pretty like Garrett and Dean? Yeah, but like their actual characters.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Friend zone, I'd be John Logan. You know, he's just got the friend zone vibes, you know.
SPEAKER_00Tucker hasn't made it to any of them. I know.
SPEAKER_03Poor Tucker.
SPEAKER_01I mean, he's a chef. I keep him around for the food. Well, he's still around. He's just not in the list. He's just like there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I did think about marrying John Tucker for the fact that he could cook. He was my husband can feed you so well. Yeah. He would. I would marry Garrett Graham. How did I know?
SPEAKER_00I am shocked. You also really like the tall, dark, handsome guys. I do, but I don't know. There's just something about them, and I just, yep. Yeah. It's the trauma. I like trauma. And then that is true. It's true. And then I would hook up with Dean, obviously. Sorry, Susie. I would hook up with Dean. He was Six Flags. So there's a lot of writers. And then I would friend zone John Logan. Okay, how did you guys first discover the series? I found out about it through you guys. I think you sent it to me. No, the series. Like I knew about the books because you guys were reading it. Yeah. And you told me to read it. And then I I don't even know what. I was interested, but you didn't read it. I haven't read it yet.
SPEAKER_03I think too, there was like a lot of books that were going on. Yeah. And we read it. And then we we jumped in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think I read it first, like you said, and then I was like, oh, Beth might like this. I didn't even think of you.
SPEAKER_03I didn't think you would even gone. I think you were like halfway through the first book. And you're like, hey, you'd really like this. I'm like, oh, sold. And I think I started reading it like that day or like the next day. And then yeah, next to no, I just kept going. You surpassed me. Because you're like, where are you? Like, or I think no, I messaged you being like, oh, this book. And you're like, I'm not there.
SPEAKER_00Can't relate. Yeah. So why do we think it became such a gateway for hockey romance? I mean, for me, it wasn't. It was heated rivalry. But yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, book-wise, I heard about off campus before heated rivalry. Series-wise, obviously, HR came out first.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I think that maybe was the gateway for shows. Books, it was this one for me.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Fair.
SPEAKER_01It was an easy read.
SPEAKER_03It was, it was a super easy read. It was enjoyable. There's nothing, enough drama, enough uh depth, especially with Carrot's story in regards to his dad.
SPEAKER_01And it's got like the spice in there as well. Yeah, the first book was like really good.
SPEAKER_03I don't think even necessarily it was the hockey. It's the same with HR. It's the hockey's a subplot. It's the relationships really that are built up around this. And I think it could be any sport that you'd you'd swap it out for.
SPEAKER_01And they just happen to play hockey. Yeah. I know binding 13, they play rugby, I think. Oh yeah. So any sports romance really is like popular right now. What? Rugby players?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. They're like a man's man plays rugby. Well, it's a rough.
SPEAKER_00It's down dirty. Yeah. Yeah. Do we think it influenced the current hockey romance boom? Oh, yeah. 100%. Definitely right now. Yeah. Yeah. Heated rivalry and then this. Yeah. Explosion.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. There's so many hockey romances out there now, or like even sports romances, especially in like the hockey sales are going to go through the roof this year.
SPEAKER_00I think it always was, but I think it's just surged more because I would say more so the shows have escalated the obsession.
SPEAKER_01Yep, because there was not Briar U hockey merch until the show. Yeah. And Cass's obviously bought them. I have one.
SPEAKER_00And I have the IHeart Hockey Boys, the off-campus one. And oh, and I have the Malone Malone's t-shirts. Like she's missing one. Yeah. So it's a problem. It is a problem. American Eagle, not sponsored, plugged. If you want one. You're welcome. What do we think made this particular series stand out from other hockey romances?
SPEAKER_01Well, I've never read any other hockey romances before this. So it was kind of just like I saw it was getting hyped up. The covers were cute. So multiple things drawing me in.
SPEAKER_03For me, I think it was their friendship. Like you really kind of got a like a taste for how they all worked with one another and they all are all such close friends. They all live together. Um, but they're all such different personalities about works. And then you bring in these girls, and then the girls are all very strong personalities. Yeah. You know what I mean? And so you kind of have like a strong female lead, which we love.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Do we think that hockey romance would be as popular without off campus?
SPEAKER_01I mean, he did HR was would have done that anyways.
SPEAKER_03It's a totally different vibe. Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I've never I've never read the book or watched the show, obviously, but just as good.
SPEAKER_03This I think is a little bit more, I don't want to say all ages, but it's a little bit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I think teens could watch this. Like I haven't read the books. Are they spicy? Yes. Yeah. They are. Okay. Because so is he too.
SPEAKER_01The show is, yeah. I think older teens could watch it. I don't know if I would feel comfortable like with younger teens like getting five.
SPEAKER_00No, like I'm thinking like high school age and older type of things. An older, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think they've rated 16 plus.
SPEAKER_00So I think the difference too is like with MM romances. This was like the first, I would say, like, MM romance adapted to a TV show that was like, in a sense, more positive with a love story between two men. So it was like, yes, it took them, you know, what was it, nine years? Nine years, yeah. To actually like talk about feelings. But it was just like a nice, like develop, like it was like a nice, I don't know. It was just so good. It was so well done. It was very well done. And I think that's what made HR different.
SPEAKER_03I will say that going from HR to OC, the lack of hockey buttons because I immediately I know the lack of hockey butts. Yeah, yeah. Have you seen a hockey butt? Sydney Crosby. Like they I don't it must, it's all the skating or the workouts that they do, but they've got these shelves on their behind like their backside. Just so round. Yeah. Like this could sit on it. Shelf.
unknownLiterally.
SPEAKER_00Just wow. And then their side profile is like real nice.
SPEAKER_03Like if you ran into the back of them, they could do damage. You'd like just rappel off.
SPEAKER_00Like, just bounce right off.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And maybe like you'd be you'd be the one being like, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_00Hilarious.
SPEAKER_03But HR did hockey butts very well.
SPEAKER_00It very much did. Thank you, Jacob Tierney. I haven't read the books, so I'm asking you guys which book was your favorite, Bethany, because you've read all of it.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, the deal is probably my favorite. Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What about everyone rants and raves about the score? Is it Idean and Alley's The Score?
SPEAKER_03Theirs is spicier. Okay. Their book is definitely That's why I didn't have to. Yeah. It's a lot spicier. So it just depends on if you like that or not. For me, the deal had a good uh mix of both. Like I enjoyed the whole series as a whole, and you get to know obviously like each character a little bit more. I will say that John Tucker in the series actually comes off a little bit darker.
SPEAKER_01Oh, really?
SPEAKER_03I was looking at you like you knew, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_01This is news to me. She's like, have no idea.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let's talk. Off-campus books versus TV show. I'm obviously asking you guys because I haven't read them, as we've said. Were you excited or terrified when you heard off-campus was getting a TV adaptation? Excited. Excited, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I know some there was some reservations from people, but to me. I think it's always nerve-wracking. I don't know, because I don't think there was in my head, there wasn't really too much that they could really mess up that would affect if you liked it or not.
SPEAKER_00True. Whereas like with other fantasy novels or there's more to mess up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There's more expectations. This was pretty simple to do. The only thing that I was kind of disappointed in was the casting for Hannah. But then as the series went on, I was like, oh, she's perfect.
SPEAKER_00You liked her.
SPEAKER_01I did like her. And her voice is beautiful.
SPEAKER_03It was just the initial, like, not what I pictured in my head when I thought about it I did not like jewels.
SPEAKER_00We can get into that. Okay. We get into that. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00What was your biggest hope for the show?
SPEAKER_01Just had to be entertaining.
SPEAKER_00Hockey butts.
SPEAKER_03Which you didn't get. I know. Very disappointed. And I'm sorry, but his butt just didn't do it. Yeah, it was just so normal. It was just a normal butt. When you had It wasn't big, it wasn't small. When you had exactly when you'd see their butts, you'd be like, that's a butt. Specifically his. Yeah. And I'm pretty sure that's one of the things that you brought up to me that made me want to watch.
SPEAKER_00Just a butt. Yeah, we were at. I literally showed you guys a screenshot. Well, you said you literally described them as basketball butts. That's the only way you can describe. Yeah. Yeah. Two butts. Yeah. Two balls. So one butt. He had very normal butts in this show. Very. Which casting choice did you love the most?
SPEAKER_01Dean.
SPEAKER_00He's just nice to look at. He's very nice to look at.
SPEAKER_03So for me, I would say Dean, Logan, and Garrett were phenomenally casted.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and Allie.
SPEAKER_03And Allie.
SPEAKER_01Even though she wasn't like what the books described, her character. I love her. I have a woman crush on that person. Yes. She's just so much. I was just like, yeah. The J Well scene. I'm just like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Just staring.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, what?
SPEAKER_03I do wish that they decided to go maybe a little bit of a dirtier blonde for Dean. His natural hair color is like even if even if they just lightened that up a little bit. Just because like the whole time he had like roots on the super bright blonde ends.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Also, he's Canadian, guys. Yeah. Mark Mark Monario.
SPEAKER_01That's real close to us.
SPEAKER_00Dangerously close. Dangerously close. Um, which character looks closest to how you pictured in your head when you were reading the books?
SPEAKER_01I don't think any of them really no? No. They were all like I couldn't really remember what they were described as in the books because I read them like last year and we've read so many books. So I didn't really have any any expectations. But I guess I did because like the girl who played Hannah didn't meet my expectations at first.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've heard that from a lot of people, but she grew on everyone as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. She's really talented.
SPEAKER_00So which character looks least like the version you had in your head?
SPEAKER_01Hannah.
SPEAKER_03Well, Allie, I loved her because she was longer. But yeah. Her how she looked though was and her and Taku were probably the least like the ones in my head. Fair.
SPEAKER_00Is there anyone you would have cast differently?
SPEAKER_03I can't now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no. Like, how do you who would you like that's who you Look at them as now.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I I feel so bad for John Tucker and the guy who plays him. Yeah. I would do that one differently. Fair. He he was like a lot more like gruffer and less like Susie Homemaker and his books. Yeah, like. Sorry.
SPEAKER_01That's an insult. I'm using that as an insult.
SPEAKER_03Sorry. It's just that's just how the what is it, an idiom, how the saying goes?
SPEAKER_01He was literally in an apron and had oven mitts on like all the time. Like, yeah. But I'm not gonna watch his season.
SPEAKER_03See, and in my in my head, reading him in the books and his book himself, like he just he comes off as like the gruff chef of like a diner, like just kind of a little rough around the energy. Not knowing, I would have been like, oh, must be. Yeah. He's a fluff. I can't, I just I can't I don't know if I'd be excited for his episode or his season because he comes off as like such a fluffy bunny. Uh and that's just not the vibe I got from him with the books. That sucks. In the books, he comes from kind of like the darker side of town, and that kind of shows it did not come across like on screen.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what like season two, they're following Dean and Allie's love story, but in the books it's actually Logan. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's Logan and Grace who's next.
SPEAKER_01So I don't know why they're doing that. Or maybe they're gonna hint at Logan, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I kind of wonder if it was if it those are maybe the two of the top received.
SPEAKER_01They've cast her, they've cast Grace, they did. So maybe it will be like introduced next season.
SPEAKER_00Maybe that's kind of how they did it with this one, right? I've heard that Dean and Allie were actually in this season more than they were in the book. Yes. Yeah. So well, each book is very much about just that couple.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And you kind of get tidbits of like the other guys. Yeah. And like the pretty much like their other friends. Yeah. And then as like the next book, you really kind of get to know the next two people. And then the next and then like the previous couples come in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because it's usually like dual POV only with that couple, like uh Garrett and Hannah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So on. Which scene were you guys most excited to see on screen?
SPEAKER_01Uh okay, so spoilers obviously because we're talking about it, but I really love like the family dynamics and like when things come to light in terms of like are you talking about the with his dinner with his dad? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's for some reason. That's the one I wouldn't even say I was looking forward to it, but that's the one that kind of stuck in my head that's like the one of I want to that dinner. That I was interested to see how that all was gonna play out. Yeah. Like and how they were gonna do it. Was it well done? Did you think so? I would say so.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was. That was like part of the story that really stuck out to me when I read the books. So I was really looking forward to like seeing that play out.
SPEAKER_03It really gives you a background on why Garrett is the way that he is. I love the actor that played his dad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's good from uh Shameless. Oh, right, he's in Riva too, but he's from Shameless. He's yeah, I forgot about Revot 08, though. He has. I almost didn't recognize him at first. I was like, is that? I actually had to look it up. Oh it was.
SPEAKER_01You know where he was in too? Have you guys ever watched Something Borrowed? Have you guys seen that movie?
SPEAKER_00Oh, a long time ago. Was he in that?
SPEAKER_01He was the like the fun like surfer guy. He was also in Bride Wars. He was this guy.
SPEAKER_03Marcus. I mean, I know what he looks like.
SPEAKER_01Marcus.
SPEAKER_03She just showed me a picture of him. You're like, I know who that is. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'm gonna show you the character. This guy right there. That's the character from the movie.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yes. Yeah. Fun rapid fire. Okay. Book Garrett or TV Garrett?
SPEAKER_03Book. I'm gonna go TV. Ooh. That smile.
SPEAKER_00Right? Not true.
SPEAKER_03See more photos of him smiling.
SPEAKER_00Oh, he's just delicious.
SPEAKER_03Like to me, it completely transforms.
SPEAKER_00It does. It changes his whole face.
SPEAKER_01The minute he smiles, you're like I mean, I did see him smile in the show. Can I do like a mix of in-between? Or do I have to choose one? Okay, fair.
SPEAKER_00Book Logan or TV Logan.
SPEAKER_01Book Logan. I get to know more about him. He's good. He's great in the in the show too. He's attractive, but uh, you just get more of like his his thoughts and stuff in the book. His hair really bothered me. In the show?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was very that's fair because it kept there was just too much. It it needed you know what it needed? Some conditioner. Uh it was very dry looking. They probably bleached some of his hair.
SPEAKER_01I think he had highlights.
SPEAKER_00Did he?
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00He's very good looking though.
SPEAKER_03I think too though, for me, I think some of what they've changed kind of affects how I feel about book versus show. So, like I said, like I like that he had a crush on her from afar in the show, whereas he didn't in the book. Yeah. Like to me, that kind of made more a little bit more sense with the story of why and then why he was kind of like that with her. Um and I that gave me a huge ick in the book. Oh like he was he was like literally and even in the show a little bit, but he was ruining his relationship with one of his best friends over this stupid crush. Yeah, over this crush. And at least in the show, it made sense of he's obviously had a crush on this girl forever show version, right? Right.
SPEAKER_01You know what he needs? Some balls. He does, yeah. Why didn't you go after it? You just sat and were like, Yep, I'm gonna just watch this play out and be mad about it. Yeah, yeah, spicy about it. Okay, book Dean or TV Dean, TV, TV Dean. What book Dean was so freaking superficial, like there's no depth, and then that scene where he's like confronting Allie in the show and he's saying that he can't complete the assignment. Oh his his his eye game in the show.
SPEAKER_03Yes, the yearning in his eyes, like the I the way his eyes softened in that scene. He to me is Ilya, like that what they can do with their facial expression to convey how they're feeling or what they're thinking.
SPEAKER_00I have two favorite scenes of Dean when they were in the photo booth and she walks out, and the minute he realized he's like, I'm screwed. He realized he was in love with her. Yeah, I'm in trouble. The other scene is we all know the one. Yes, he's leaving the hat's a skew. Play it. He's leaving, and he has to turn around and do one good look. He's like, and then runs out the door.
SPEAKER_03I died in the one uh scene where he's wearing the daddy shirt.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03Daddy Dean.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh okay. Book Tucker or TV Tucker. Book Tucker. Fair. The Briar U men draft. Ooh. Start with Garrett Graham.
SPEAKER_01Ultimate book boyfriend or overrated? Nah. There's so many good book boyfriends. I can't. Nope. Sorry.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_01That's hard. He's ultimate for me, but he's not ultimate for you. What are you talking about? He is in this genre. Okay, that's what you have to specify. Overall. Uh ultimate book boyfriend. That's okay. In this genre. Yeah. Then yes. Actually, no. I take it back. Who?
SPEAKER_00Dean. Just kidding. Okay, let's list his best qualities.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I'm I'm gonna say ultimate. Okay. But one of the things that I liked that the book did better that the show didn't do was he did put a ban on hand. I heard this.
SPEAKER_00Yep. And I actually would have preferred that in the show.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, that whole scene had me grinning like crazy because I was like, Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I wish they kept that in the show.
SPEAKER_03I heard that and I was like, why would they change it? I think they were trying to be too politically correct. Who cares? And I I like, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It just yeah, that was like he was super not even protective, but territorial. Love that in the book. Yeah. What's what we want? They're trying to like not offend anybody in the show.
SPEAKER_00I'm done. Yeah, we like no people that are watching the show typically, unlike the books, have read the books. They want they want what they want. Exactly. They want the territorial man. Yep. Politics aside, let's knock that right off. Okay, let's talk about his best qualities. Territorial.
SPEAKER_01Yep, kind, I'd say.
SPEAKER_00I didn't read the books, so I'm just going based off of what I've seen. He's very giving. Very giving.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Giving. Big O's. Self-aware. Self-aware.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like that he well, yeah. Well, it's most of like the violence aspect. He's so worried about being like his dad.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. But then that but in that sense, I also don't think he's also self-aware because I I think he does worry that he carries that in himself. And I like think it lets he lets it affect his relationships.
SPEAKER_01That's true. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean friends and romance. Fair. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So biggest red flags.
SPEAKER_01TV didn't put a blanket on Hannah when she fell asleep. Really? Yeah. My red flag is a little bit.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes. I that did bother me a lot, actually. She's old. Yeah. You got you went on the ground and put a blanket on yourself.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Put a blanket on her. Do you think he got checked before they had sex? That would be my red flag. Probably not, no. Yeah, I'm gonna say probably not. So there's a lot of a lot of girls who rode that bicycle. Dean's true. Or Garrett. Garrett, right? There's a lot of there's a lot of bicycle writing going on in the books. Dean was probably top, but I think Garrett was right underneath. It's right below.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Let's give him a husband potential rating out of five. Oh five? Yeah.
SPEAKER_013.5.
SPEAKER_00I'm with that.
SPEAKER_01That's what I was thinking.
SPEAKER_00See, I feel like I need to read the books to give a a fair rating. Let's go off show.
SPEAKER_03Off show.
SPEAKER_00Of show. Okay. I think that's fair. Okay. Let's move on to John Logan. Golden Retriever energy? Yes. Very. That's why he's friendzoned. Yeah. Oh, poor John. Yeah. He's a good friend. Why does everyone love Logan?
SPEAKER_03He's sweet and loyal. He is and well, and he both, I think, in the show, he sees things. I think that not a lot of people do. He's the one who told Garrett to give her a can. Right? Like he knew, he understood, and those are the little things that he pays attention to. But I think he looks after people. I think that kind of comes from a familial side of things.
SPEAKER_01But he's got always some family issues, right? So I think that you know he's trying to look out for people and he's attentive.
SPEAKER_00I guess this one's specifically for you, Beth, because you've read his book. His most emotionally devastating storyline.
SPEAKER_03I don't know if I'd really call him emotionally devastating. Not really. Is there anything just gets in his own way? Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He just wants love. Yeah. Daddy Dean. Oh, daddy. There we go. Funny, cocky, or walking HR violation. All three. All three, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Fair.
SPEAKER_00He's got a lot of charisma.
SPEAKER_03He does. I was gonna say it's gonna take a strong person to go to HR.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah. Character growth discussion. Okay. This is more so for you guys because I only know what I see. Does he have any?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. This very, a very similar feel to he starts to fall for her and he wants to change for her. He wants to be a different person for her. And I think too, like he is very much about I wouldn't really like wouldn't really say he's selfish in the book or the show.
SPEAKER_01No, he's just he's a fun guy. He, you know, he's taking getting the most out of his call uh college experience, getting the most getting the most out of that. Um he loves sex, obviously. Like that's his main thing in the whole book. Like basically the third book is just about them talking about sex constantly.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01Or having sex. And part of why I DNF'd it, there's no depth to it like there was in the first book with Garrett's story and Hannah's. For them, it was just like hookup, and that's it. And then they just wanted to keep hooking up with each other exclusively.
SPEAKER_00Would you survive dating Dean? Well, Susie's gonna marry him, so she survives. I obviously do not survive.
SPEAKER_01It'll be a changed man by the time I marry him. No, no, no. No, no.
SPEAKER_00All right, Tucker, bored most underrated man in the series question right.
SPEAKER_03I do think that maybe the people would enjoy Book Tucker Tucker more. Okay. So I'm and I could be wrong. Maybe some people like the fluffy bunny Tucker.
SPEAKER_00If you have a different opinion, let us know in the comments on Tucker with book book tucker.
SPEAKER_03He's very protective. He's definitely got like a little dark edge to him. In the book. Unassuming, yeah. He's kind of he's a little he's more quiet. Just kind of like, yeah, like your strong, gruff. He doesn't say a lot, but he does feed you. He does feed you.
SPEAKER_01That must be the biggest green flag. That's his biggest green flag. There it is.
SPEAKER_00Alright, do we think he's secretly the best boyfriend? I haven't read his story, so I can't attest to this.
SPEAKER_03It's also hard because his book has one of my least favorite things in it. So okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who would be the best husband?
SPEAKER_03Wogan. For me? Yeah, see, I was going Logan. Tucker would be a good. I like the darker. I know.
SPEAKER_00I like a little edge to him.
SPEAKER_03I don't want a little golden retriever. He's got a little edge to him. He's just more golden than edgy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I need like a 50-50 split. Yeah. Or even like a or a 740. Yes. Sure. Best hookup. Dean. Dean. Most likely to forget your birthday. Dean.
SPEAKER_01Dean, yeah. I'd say Dean too.
SPEAKER_00Dean? Yeah. Yeah. Fair. Most likely to make you cry. Carrot. Yeah. Most likely to buy you flowers after an argument.
SPEAKER_01Logan.
SPEAKER_00Logan for sure.
SPEAKER_01Logan. But with him, we probably wouldn't have even have had an argument.
unknownSure.
SPEAKER_03I'm going to say Logan across the board, but show Tucker. Okay. Would also be a good contender.
SPEAKER_00Fair.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Most likely to become a book talk obsession. I mean Dean. Dean and Dean is already a book talk obsession. Both of those guys. Lord have mercy. Why are we so obsessed with fictional men? And more specifically in this case, hockey players in books specifically. Because hockey players in real life are not the same. I think that's why.
SPEAKER_03Spit on the ice. Whoa, that's so sexy. What? Yeah. The thing that I think is funny is watching everyone being like, if you have been around a hockey player, you know their shit stinks.
SPEAKER_00My husband. He has to leave it outside. It stinks so badly. I don't know, I can't fast. It's a different smell.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I've never. It's like it's like sour.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what it is, but it's not right. It's sour and musky and disgusting. It's like yeah. Disgusting. Sweat. But they probably don't wash it now.
SPEAKER_03The best way I could describe it would be old milk that's gotten hot.
SPEAKER_00Ew. It's gross. It's very gross. What do the Briar You Boys provide that real men don't?
SPEAKER_01Entertainment.
SPEAKER_03I can realistic expectations. Bingo!
SPEAKER_01I can like watch and be like, I can watch their stuff play out and not be as emotionally invested as I am in my own relationship. Like they can do something stupid and I won't be as mad. Like it doesn't affect me.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01So they provide that good line of like I can enjoy you, but also not get offended like when you do something wrong. Fair.
SPEAKER_03That's fair.
SPEAKER_01I could never be Ali. Complete an assignment to sleep with other people. What are you talking about? I'm too jealous for that. I'm so upset with her.
SPEAKER_03I would never survive. That's so stupid. And I get like what they did there. He called her to tell her pretty much like that he's not going to complete the assignment. And I think she was kind of like, oh shoot, he's calling me to tell me he's completed the assignment. Now I have to do it.
SPEAKER_01Stupid miscommunication crap.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but she didn't really pick up the phone though. So it's it's her own, her own fault. Yeah. She's like, I have to.
SPEAKER_00I did. He was trying to communicate. And she just was like, now yeah. Idiot. Why do we, as readers, become so attached to book boyfriends?
SPEAKER_01Because they're written by women. Like they hit all the check marks of what we want.
SPEAKER_03It's true. And how we want it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It is true. A little bit dark, a little bit of edge, but also like super thoughtful.
SPEAKER_03In the book, he like Garrett also kind of like lets Hannah be the one to take the reins. Like he he lets her set the pace of things.
SPEAKER_00Can we just please have a moment of appreciation for the two scenes in the show where Garrett pulls her by the waistband?
SPEAKER_01Yes. Was that like when they were over on the balcony and like Justin Google was like?
SPEAKER_00It happened when he first came over when she was talking to Justin. Justin.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Justin walked away and they were like discussing their whatever. Their agreement. Their agreement. And he pulled her. Yeah. Oh.
SPEAKER_01I remember.
SPEAKER_00And then when after she sang the song, he came up in his disgusting, sweaty hockey stuff. He probably smelled so bad and pulled her in again.
SPEAKER_02Oh. Yeah.
unknownPerfect.
SPEAKER_02Visually, looks great. Real life?
SPEAKER_00No. No. The shower first. Jacob Wellorty does that in Wuthering Heights as well. Lifts her up and pulls her in. Did you watch that already? I watched half of it. Girl, we were supposed to watch it together. We're never getting together for it.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. To be honest. I'm gonna watch it now.
SPEAKER_00I don't even think we finished uh Frankenstein. Are we in love with the men or the fantasy? The fantasy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because we all know that these men in real life are not the characters they portray.
SPEAKER_03True. Also, we are seeing the best bits of themselves in both the books and the movies. And if you had to deal with like their sweaty stuff lying in the front door they had to trip over every single day, or them not packing up the food that's sitting out on the counter, things like that, you'd be like, nah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely no. Who would leave what towels on the floor? Dean. Dean. He for sure would. Sent sweet texts. Logan Tucker. Logan?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Logan Tucker? Yeah. Show Tucker, though. Oh, okay. Did you mean Logan and Tucker? Yeah. Logan and Tucker. Forgot an important date, Dean. Dean. Drove across town just to see you. Graham. I'd say Logan and Graham. I was just gonna say the same thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Book Tucker.
SPEAKER_00Don't know much of Logan. Tucker was hard. Yeah? Yeah. Started an argument over something ridiculous. I think Garrett.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Quick to anger that one.
SPEAKER_00Alright. If Briar U Boys existed in real life, which they do in my brain, which one would disappoint you the fastest?
SPEAKER_01Dean. Dean. Yeah. He just seems like he's got that Playboy mentality. Cheat for sure.
SPEAKER_00Which off-campus man would absolutely get exposed in a we listen and don't judge TikTok. Dean. Dean. Yeah. Poor guy. Be honest. Which Briar U-boy would you leave your husband for? Also Dean. That's horrible. Like how he's obviously the worst choice. Mine would be Garrett Graham. 100%. Which Briar U Men man would be a menace in the group chat? Dean. Dean Dean. What is your most unhinged off-campus opinion? I would say Jules.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, considering they're not even a character in the main book. I'd say that, you know, I think they changed, like the producers changed.
SPEAKER_03I don't I just I don't like it when siblings don't look even remotely related.
SPEAKER_01That's true. Like they don't look alike at all at all.
SPEAKER_03There was no similar features. Like I think that Jules' character should have been someone who was like the in the friend group? In the friend group, or someone who ran the school's paper.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And say so they were in charge of the sports section. This, like, you know what I mean? Like, or the gossip section, or maybe they ran the whole they did the whole newspaper. Yeah. Um, then it would kind of make sense of why they were talking about the Briar U boys and their social lives. Yeah, you were talking about this. Yeah. So I thought it was also a little weird that a sibling was talking about their brother's relationships. And his good friends. And his best friends. Yeah. Yeah. It was a bit weird. Yeah. I thought it's weird. Me as a sibling of both a brother and a sister, I would not want to know about the explicity of who them and their best friends are dating.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I feel like if they made Jules's character as like someone who worked for the school paper or had was had a friend within that group would have been fine. Yeah. But to make it like a sibling. A sibling was a little bit weird.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And I have the like the with the not looking alike thing. I have that issue with so many shows where they cast parents, yeah, siblings, cousins, like whatever. Um, I was telling Nate this the other day. We've been watching Nashville, which is like an old show, music show or whatever. Raina James and her sister, uh Tandy, I think that's her name. Tandy, I think so. They did such a good job making sure they look alike. Like they're both natural redheads, and so they both have like that same look to them. They did that really well. But when shows cast people that don't look anything alike, it's just an irk to me.
SPEAKER_00Like it doesn't scratch the itch. No, it's weird.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Every time you saw them, like their their body types and their coloring were just so different. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like John Logan is more of like the olive darker kind of skin tone, I'd say. And then Jules is pale and blonde.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And I get that the hair. But even the facial features were different. That's what I mean. Like it was just like at the yeah.
SPEAKER_01Which obviously is gonna happen like when you have obviously they're not real life siblings. No, but you you can cast their, it's been done so much.
SPEAKER_03But it's also like it's like when you look at a movie or show and they cast their younger selves, and it's always like it's a little irksome when the younger self doesn't look like they did that in me before or no, not me before you.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it was another Nicholas Smart's.
SPEAKER_03And then there's other ones where it's like when they do it, like you're like, wow, they found the perfect child to play.
SPEAKER_00Have you guys ever watched Dexter?
SPEAKER_03Nope.
SPEAKER_00Yes, Team Dexter is literally just Michael C. Hall in a wig.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Like, well, sorry, yeah, like I'm talking more like children. I know.
SPEAKER_00Well, team team Dexter didn't really look like Adult Dexter either. Like there was okay, so there was two people that played Dexter before Dexter threw on a wig and pretended to be a younger version of himself. But his actual younger version did not look like him either. But I was always making fun of that. I was like, what the budget was so low, they just had to toss a wig on Michael C. Hall and be like, hey, act younger. Okay. If you had to be trapped in an elevator for 24 hours with one Briar U boy, who are you choosing? Dean.
SPEAKER_03I feel like he would just really pass the time nicely.
SPEAKER_00He actually would be very entertaining. He would be. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01In more ways than more money. Yeah. I feel like as much as I've chosen Dean for so many things, I feel like I'd get so annoyed. Like if I had to be trapped in an elevator with him for 24 hours, he takes nothing seriously. But you're gonna marry him? Tucker probably has food in his bag though. Yeah. Survival. Survival! We take snacks over snacks.
SPEAKER_00What if it was longer than 24 hours? What if the 24 hours extended into 48? Yeah, that'd be not.
SPEAKER_01I choose a friend over something. You know, he just seems like we'd have some good chats. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Maybe Dean would have some good chats. I don't think too much talking, not chat between you two. Hands off, my husband. You guys haven't even met yet. This is pre ever.
SPEAKER_00This was pre you. Which off-campus boy would have the most embarrassing search history, Dean. Dean. Dean, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But could be also Garrett, because Dean, I think he he knew some things.
SPEAKER_00True. Garrett could have been in there, like.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who would be the worst person to date but the most fun to gossip about afterwards? Dean.
SPEAKER_01I should change my marriage. I don't think I can marry him. I'm gonna marry Logan instead. I feel like this only applies to me. This is this episode has revealed a lot of things. We are me and Logan. Oh. We can have Tucker. I'll take that, John. You can do it, John.
SPEAKER_03No, John Tucker must die.
SPEAKER_01Whoa!
SPEAKER_00Great movie. Okay, on a scale of one to ten, I'm gonna add two people into this. Okay. How much has Garrett Graham and Dean DeLaurantis ruined your standards for real men?
SPEAKER_03Honestly, not that much.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, not that much. They they I think we're used to it now.
SPEAKER_03Men already ruined their own standards. Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_01They did. Men were menning, and Nate's been a really good husband. The men are gonna come for days, so you know I can't say my standards are ruined. He's been pretty good. Men in general, though.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like if you were to take statistics, yeah. Okay, the general population of men. Sorry, men. A resounding yes. There's not you're not all the same. Don't come for us in the comments. But there is a lot of you out there that have really, really dicked it up for a lot of other men. For the rest of you. For the rest of you. Yeah. If the Briar You Boys existed in real life, which one would disappoint you the fastest and why? Let us know in the comments. All the comments.
SPEAKER_01Dean.
unknownDean.
SPEAKER_01Dean, dean, dean, dean, dean, dean, garr. Dean, dean, dean.
SPEAKER_00Well, I hope you enjoyed our off-campus.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I hope this session lived up to your standards. Yeah. Your expectations.
SPEAKER_00We weren't gonna do a deep dive. We just wanted to have fun and literally spiral over these men together.
SPEAKER_01Now it's time for Lions Be Loved.
SPEAKER_00Mine is from Hold on, it's loading. Oh my gosh. Shut up. Doo doo doo. Okay, mine is from Crown Me Yours. Okay. Yep. The Heart String Duet Book Number Two by Liv Xander. Page 16. His thumb brushes the hollow of my throat, finding the frantic beat of my pulse. If anything, you seduced me with your blatant disregard. He catches my wrist, bringing my palm up to his mouth. His lips grazing the calluses earned from the shovel this morning. You move through the architecture of my existence with such ease. You stand in the center of my domain amidst the worms and the decay, and you look so perfectly terrifyingly at home.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I have that one down uh highlighted too. So good. So good. Susie's hungry. My stomach keeps growling. Does it? Yeah, she is. I looked over here. I looked over when my stomach growled and she's just like looking at me, I guess.
SPEAKER_00I hope it catches on the mic. It's kind of in the same vicinity. I mean if I could hear it, then I can hear it. I hope it I hope it does.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Mine is from Beneath by Ariel Sullivan. Okay. Page 115. Hate me all you want, Tristan said, leaning closer. My heart found my throat. Hate me for ruining your life. Hate me for being here. Blame me. Fight me. You need somewhere to put your rage. I'll take it. I can handle it. I can live with your hate. But I'm asking you. His chest heaved with a shaking breath. I am begging you to try for them, for Haven, to trust us. Help us complete this mission and you can be done. I'll personally see you get the sector you want and his throat bobbed. I'll leave you alone for a good. Ooh. I love the hate me. Hate me, I can take it lines.
SPEAKER_03They are good. They are. So I did the deal. Nice. Okay. Fitting.
SPEAKER_01$3.99.
SPEAKER_03You're a pretty good guy, Garrett. You know that. A good guy, I wish. Fuck. If she could read my mind and see all the dirty images flashing inside it, if she knew all the wicked things I want to do to her, she'd probably recant that statement. I have my moments. I answer with a shrug. Her smile widens and my chest cracks wide open. I know in that moment that I'm in trouble. I agreed to help her, not just because I'm her friend, but because I'm a man. And when a woman asks you to have sex with her and give her an orgasm, you don't think about it. You say hell yes. Well, she got the orgasm she did. And I know I'm gonna get the sex. I will. But right now, all I want is for this girl to smile at me again.
