[Music] Haley and Triggancey's open and welcome aboard tracks and tangents. I'm your co-host Brian. And I'm your co-host Genki. I'm a star check movie who checks off on tangents. And I'm your Star Trek expert who is here to get the tangents back on track. Each episode we watch and talk about a different star check episode. And this week we watched Star Trek the original series season one episode 16 the Galileo 7. Welcome back everyone. We were just doing our little show prep here and we realized we missed a milestone. We are halfway through season one of the original series. Woohoo! Insert confetti. Yes halfway mark plus two counting this episode I think I looked at so that's awesome. In the back of my mind I just keep telling myself we're getting closer to the next generation. Woohoo! Which is my favorite series. Well I have no idea what's happening so how long do we have to go? We have three total seasons of the original series so we are one sixth of the way there. And then your man Picard joins us? Yes Picard and Riker and Data and holodex and the real Q and the Borg and Geinen. I heard that Riker is supposed to have like a bigger role in the new Starfleet show. Yes while the the character does the actor who plays the character went on from the next generation to be a producer and a director of the Star Trek shows so definitely is a bigger role. That's awesome. Everybody stays with the little niche it seems. Something like that. Again thank you all for tuning in to another episode. Let's just jump into it. So it's done? At the end of last week's episode I gave Jackie the title to this week's episode for our Turbo Liftees and Jackie with no other information gave a guess or estimate or a bunch of words strung together to a lovely word salad to describe what the plot of this week's episode was going to be so without further ado computer. What did Jackie say last week? Jackie's shot in the dark guess last week was I'm thinking we are going to learn about seven individual moons or planets that Galileo said were special. So how do you think you did Jackie? I got seven right? It was in the title. I didn't really bad. It's a vague title. We'll give you a pass this week. Definitely had nothing to do with moons. Well I mean you could have said you know how I love my murderous trees and my chew crime you could have said something like a city three or whatever you know because then I'd be like oh it's about people. Yes it is about people it is about seven individuals that are not moons stranded because they took a shuttlecraft named Galileo. Yes and isn't you said something that they don't really show the landing place and the shuttlecraft and is this like the one time to do it? So this would be the first episode of Star Trek where the shuttlecraft makes its appearance formally on screen. We see that in the over dramatic cinematic shot of the shuttlecraft launching from the Enterprise. Oh yeah Marvel totally stole that. So yes this is the first appearance of the shuttlecraft this is where it makes its debut. It by no means becomes a rarity this is going to be a common thing that starfleet utilizes on their ships and we get a lot more appearances of the shuttlecraft. Do they ever get legs and walk around? Like like robot shuttlecraft. Like robot shuttlecrafts. Like well because like this time they were in like a rocky not smooth surface and if it had legs then I could walk around it had tires or just floating can't really walk on the rocks. No why would it need to walk on the rocks? It's a shuttlecraft so it would say it's people. It would lift off and fly wherever it needed to go in theory. Well they need a Scotty on every plane a shuttlecraft. But what did you think overall of this week's episode? What were your initial impressions? I really liked it actually. At first I was like what are we watching because everybody was so new like who are these people? Like they're said I only know Scotty McCoy and Spock. I'm like who's this other one? And then these other four just pop in and then disappear and then I'm very mad that my Janice is not in it. They tried to substitute another blonde for her. Yeah it is kind of a carousel of a cast this week we get three regulars Scotty McCoy Spock. We get four irregular that really don't have any stain power to die spoiler and we have a science officer, Booma who makes no further appearance and a Yomans which we're just going to have a parade of Yomans as mentioned before where they flirt in and out they don't really have any stain power so. Okay question. So why did the one on the Galileo? Why was she in red and then why was the one on the enterprise in that yellow gold color? Different subsections different. So there's a blue Yomans for McCoy? I would imagine that the Yomans that serve the science officers so if Spock had a Yoman they would be a science specialty Yomans so they would wear blue again it's not totally consistent you do see that because I'm just imagining Yomans ran go go had a red uniform but was the Yoman to Kirk but we see other Yomans who assist on the bridge wearing the command yellow gold uniform so just different specialties different sections that they serve on the ship. Okay so back to why like this episode I got to learn more about Spock and McCoy's relationship because I've kind of seen it like they're kind of like back and forth at each other like picking you know because one's very logical and one's very people have emotions so I thought it was interesting to see them actually work together. Yeah and that's definitely I think the overall point of this episode very Spock focused very much drawing the audience in to flesh out Spock's character show that internal conflict that he has of making logical choices not getting the results that he expects or finds favorable ultimately myself it's an okay episode it's it's not terrible it's not great it's very middle of the road. I mean you didn't like it when Ladimer's staff kind of jiggled when the G the G-man went to get him. Yeah so the G-man the character whose name you can't remember the character. There you go as we as we look at our notes here. No I mean it doesn't really have anything to do with I will I will praise the episode that they took some risks there were certainly some decisions that were made to add the props the costumes they definitely went out on a limb to have this plot line with these aliens but again at the end of the day you take away the whole internal conflict of character for Spock and his emotions and his decisions to me this is just a very middle of the road episode ultimately I don't hate it but this isn't going to be any sort of milestone or landmark episode for the series it's entertaining not every episode needs to be a perfect 10 out of 10 or a landmark episode that completely redefines what Star Trek is sometimes you just need an episode that provides entertainment. Right but I have one more question this is like the third episode in a row that's been Spock focused is that going to be a theme coming forward like with different characters or is this just to show how complex he is. Well I think that just shows a balance in how the writers want to focus on everything you are right there have been past episodes that have a focus on Spock in a sense of him as a character the menagerie and his motivations to take pike back to the planet the episode dagger of the mind where we have a focus on the Vulcan mind meld certainly you're not going to see this in any kind of consistent order where every episode we're going to focus on Spock just like you wouldn't expect them to focus every episode on one particular character right this would be a boring show if every episode was a focus on Captain Kirk and no one else sure they're going to continue to focus on other characters Spock will absolutely have other episodes where he is the central focal character to flesh out his to expand upon him in the Star Trek universe. Oh that makes sense since you know I did not know about him until the beginning. Well again this is the original series no one really knows anything until the writers decide to throw it at the audience definitely this episode was written and produced because he Spock had such a positive reception by the viewers in these first episodes again were 16 17 episodes into the original series I don't know because it just really depends on whether you count the cage as episode one or episode zero for numbering wise don't ask it's driving me nuts so the audience is resonating with Spock and so they wrote this episode to give the audience more of what they wanted. Give the people what they want. That's it but we will definitely have other episodes with Spock and other characters and not just Kirk as the focal point. It was just interesting thinking wow I've learned a lot about Spock but how about we learn more about Subu or something. Oh we'll get there. Yay! But with all that being said why don't we get into the episode Jackie why don't you walk us through this week's episode. The Enterprise is taking emergency medical supplies to a planet that is sick and the people on the planet need the medical supplies and they also have a person whose name is Ferris and he is actually a high commissioner and he is personally overseeing this delivery. Right when Starfleet again doesn't exist in Star Trek canon at this point it hasn't been invented when it eventually becomes invented he would not quite be he wouldn't be an ad bowl in the sense that he would be a fleet commander but it's made very clear early in the episode he does have some administrative authority over Captain Kirk and he tells it every time he is rude and also his uniform is awful. Yeah again another instance he's not really Starfleet he is more of an administrative overseer which is why he is just going to go deliver and get a photo of here here are your supplies. Pretty much. But on their way to do this there is this green glowy they call it a phenomenon it's a quasar formation and Kirk wants to investigate what it is. He goes so far as to say that he is charged as a captain in the captain of an exploration vessel that is a duty to go explore it. So we have both of these ideas and opinions fighting against each other. Right specifically it creates a conflict because the medical supplies are needed within three days they're taking the medical supplies to a rendezvous point where another ship is going to take the medical supplies somewhere else the rendezvous is in three days that's the time frame that they're fighting against. Commissioner Ferris doesn't want to go investigate he wants to get them there right away. Kirk says yeah we've got three days before we need to get the supplies there. Let's just have a little side trip space road trip. Yes. Spock and the six other people we were discussing earlier already forgot their names. McCoy, Scotty, the yeoman who's the lady, Gattano, Letimer and Boma. Yes. Oh man I thought I was going to remember that because of naked and afraid they had to build Boma's. No. The hell is a Boma. It is the in Africa you make like a circle too so that you can sleep in the middle of it and be safe from the animals that can come through the sharp things and they will not come through the sharp things and attack you. Boom. So you need to watch naked and afraid. It's like a wall. I'm looking at the definition on Google it's pretty close to what she's what Jackie said so I'll give you that. That's like eight seasons and XL and oh man I love that show. Okay sorry back on. Yeah let's get back on track. So the shuttle craft Gavaleo launches to go investigate with its seven moons on board. Yes. And Spock is the pilot and in command so I didn't know that they can change that but that's because he was stuck in command on the enterprise right? Right so he is the commanding officer of this mission so also important to note this is Spock's first official mission that he's in command. Oh newbie, newbie nerves. So anyways they're in they're on their way and the yeoman she is reading off that everything is going great. She reads random dials never really says anything and then Vladimir he is saying exactly where they are but then the screen and everything starts changing and Spock as I do just tell me a number but actually there's interference from the planet that they're going to like a major radiation according to Dr. McCoy. Yes it's not radiation that's caused by the planet that they end up crash landing on it's from the quasar itself. Oh that green thing actually. Oh that makes sense and so they're unable to basically they're dead in the water while they're being pulled into the planet and they can't reach out to the enterprise and enterprise can't reach out to them. Right I'll translate. Thanks. The quasar is emitting a high field of radiation that is blocking everything. sensors, communications it's also creating it's creating a gravitational pull on the shuttle craft but not like a gravitational pull it's interfering with their navigation. So ultimately the quasar pulls the shuttle craft in they lose communication with the enterprise the enterprise can't get a transporter lock on the crew on the shuttle craft and we get our opening credits. And then just as our new Janice she's wearing the yellow they never say her name but she's also blonde and she brings drinks around like at a party and the commissioner of Ferris is reminding Kirk of I didn't approve of this from the beginning I told you this would happen and they're like little children arguing over which one is right and Kirk is like I have x amount of days and then I'll get the medical supplies ready to go. Yes I didn't really sympathize too much with Ferris' character but I will sympathize with him on this point watching Kirk decide to send a shuttle craft with seven crew members into this phenomena in space seemed like a really stupid idea especially when you're on a time clock why can't the enterprise I know why they did it we wouldn't have an episode if we didn't do it this way why can't the enterprise scan the quasar and collect its readings then there's other examples in Star Trek and the original series where they encounter phenomena in space and they're too busy to go investigate and they market in the logs for someone else to go investigate later again it just seemed like a really dumb idea to take seven crew members and go investigate a quasar also of note they didn't know the planet was in the quasar that was discovered only after the shuttle craft gets into trouble by Yehara and so the question is why are you sending seven people on a shuttle craft which is just a glorified mission to scan this cloud in space three of which are important people of your ship yeah your head engineer your second in command and your ship's doctor yeah yeah that's kind of a dumb moment but he put his foot down like a little kid and said I'm gonna do it yeah I think it was just an ego thing I maybe well Kirk acts like he was not acting very nice no so you're suggesting that he went through extraordinary steps and set this in motion and sent out the shuttle craft just as a way to stick it to Ferris and be like I get to do what I want no I don't think that but I think he doesn't maybe in their back log he doesn't like Ferris like they have a bad relationship and then they've just like grown up to be like Nemesis or something okay and a new story for you Star Trek yeah we're gonna start writing fan fiction novels for Star Trek so back to Yehara so she found out that there is a planet in there in the middle of the green thing it's actually type M as in Mary type M is going to be the classification of any planet that can sustain humanoid life why did they choose M that makes no sense we don't have time to get into that and it they don't know anything about it but good thing we're on our way to go check it out so we do a hard cut to the surface of that planet that Eurora mentioned and we see the shuttle craft it is crashed it's in pretty good shape for crash landing but it was a controlled landing yes you know very logically done but not super controlled because everyone's shaking up everyone bumps and bruises bumps and bruises no broken bones no one's dead yet we don't need to start down the path of naked and afraid Star Trek Edition well I mean they do get scared because Spock sends out Vladimir and Gatano to scout out where they are like where what is around us basically yes and the cloth utility belts make another appearance or we appear it all like those are back yeah they bring them back it's not going to be a thing don't get attached because you said they were gone I was like mm they made a comeback okay good I was right see I'm learning I'm getting all these things so and also the little box the yeoman carries around all the time she's actually recording what's happening I had no idea why she carried that yeah it's it's like a little tape recorder yeah transcriber it's a way to record the the events of the mission yes because Spock was like you're recording this right yeah so it's recording what they say it's recording it's like a it's it's more than just a recorder to transcribe their words it does also take other details like a black box let's really I like that so while those two are out scouting Scotty gets to work because you know yes it fix this little shuttlecraft so it can go back home and Dr. McCoy is like the enterprise is totally gonna find us I don't know why we're like so like freaked out about anything and Spock plainly says the magnetic interference and how big this planet is they ain't gonna find this yeah that the sensors on the enterprise are gonna be pretty much useless in trying to locate them on this planet and it's going to come down to visual search parties much in the same way as a ship lost at sea and the coast guard goes out to try to find the ship or survivors it's going to be by visual looks only at least when the coast guard goes out to look for a ship they have a general area where they're looking and in this case the enterprise has an entire planet they have to try to find the shuttlecraft on with a green thing around it with the green magnetic or ion ion ion field that yeah with the green ion field from the radiation storm from the quasar it's crazy we jump back to the enterprise and your hara and subu confirm that yes the sensors do not work and they cannot find the Galileo right but interesting when they check down the transporter room how you know how are you guys doing down there and they've already been trying to send items down to the planet but then when they come back they're like something's wrong with them so they don't feel comfortable doing human experiment yeah they're distorted i don't know why we have this whole subplot well first and foremost i'll point out it's probably a good thing that at the very beginning of the episode the enterprise wasn't able to get a lock on the shuttle crew before they crash landed on the planet because then they would have been the seven back and it would have been the Galileo 47 yeah in parts but i don't understand the transporter malfunction and what it does for the plots i understand why they're trying to get the transporters to work because when they find them they're just going to beam them up from the planet i get that yes why have this whole subplot where the transporters aren't working and supposedly they don't know where they are so where are they sending these items and who's sending them back well at this point in the enterprise is orbiting the planet they assume the shuttle craft is on the planet it's the only place the shuttle craft could be and survive you're right they don't in fact know that the shuttle craft has crash landed on the planet they're making an assumption because this is the only place the shuttle craft could have gone yes i what i mean is like why are i know there's something to the planet but it's like on g street when actually the plant the shuttle craft crashed on h street right there that was it they're obviously not sending it down to where the shuttle craft is because they don't know where the shuttle craft is yes they're just sending it down to random parts of the planet okay that makes more sense and then and then they can just beam them out which i learned also that you don't have to be ready to be beamed you can just do it yeah you can be many wanted anytime i was like oh interesting so anyways well this is all happening Kirk is like well we need our other shuttle craft Columbus to pop out and go find where gal leo went and ferris you know our mean guy is just seizing because he's like i told you not to do this and now we have no time and then Kirk site i have until x until a specific time to look for them i'm going to use every moment i can right so off goes the Columbus maybe that's why they introduce the transporter accident because if the transporters don't work and they can't repair the galaleo the only way to get them back up is to use the shuttle craft Columbus and later Kirk kind of hedges his bets when they have to leave because he's waiting for the Columbus to redock with the enterprise but that's not really how they find them i don't know still doesn't make sense i'm gonna get off my my soapbox on this one we return back to the galaleo and mcoy is like mocking him oh good job on your first you know commanding mission and spark is focused on fixing the galaleo and not taking the bait thankfully but he has to figure out according to scottie how to get rid of 500 pounds of extra weight to be able to get back up into orbit right because even if they get the engines repaired they only have enough fuel to obtain orbit if the shuttle craft weighs 500 pounds less they don't have enough thrust and fuel to get into orbit with how much everything and everyone weighs so i didn't understand any of that until at the end when they actually showed the consequence so that's why kind of like this episode so much it answers my questions we learn physics and spark is like three of y'all got to stay back and i'll do it logically and no one is happy of course and our man booma is like why can't we just you know draw lots i'm assuming that's like pick straws yeah and spark didn't go for that either to random to random which is illogical everything spark wants to do every decision needs to be driven by logic and nothing else because spark thinks that the only way they can get out of this predicament is to rely solely on logic the partial theme of the episode the central theme i will say so latimer and our scouts latimer and gitano are climbing a little rocky well it's a big rocky ridge and they're trying to be quiet because they don't know what's happening but there's like a scratching sound happening yeah like a scraping noise it's later described as see my my cctv said scratching scratching scraping but a noise and but it coming from all areas so around them and they got scared they tried to run away but latimer was killed straight in the back with the spear a giant spear humongous and his scream summoned spark and booma to come running and meet up with gitano i guess that's one down of the three yeah suddenly now they lost 150 pounds ish and i mean and then gitano goes at least his was fast yeah they're thinking about their future of starvation and dehydration alone on the planet right we also get the description from gitano as to the creatures that attacked and he describes them as giant a-plank creatures yeah because very hidden we only see fur and fuzz yeah we'll get to that so they go and to get latimer's body and spark pulls the spear out like nothing and he's like oh this is a specific this is a fulsome point spear and i found its photo in from an orsamerica calendar okay the other two are sad and upset that their friend is gone and spark is like history lesson yeah starting the divide between the crew and spot because spot don't care that a guy just died he's more interested in scientific facts and he even was saying this was poorly made or but efficient yeah i don't think he should be talking bad about the big people trying to kill him right so booma and gitano do carry latimer's body back to the shuttle because they want to have a proper burial for him like they don't want to just leave him right and spark does offer to help carry them they very quickly decline again showing the growing divide between them but now we're back on the enterprise and the columbus has already done one round i don't know how to say how to describe out the round dart for searching in space they've cleared one section of the planet but it's again an entire planet and the sections are not terribly big so this whole scene on the enterprise continues to confirm they still don't have sensors they still don't have ways to communicate pharis is still ticked off that they're not departing and abandoning the search to get the medical supplies delivered curking his desperation orders the shuttle craft to widen their search pattern which will cover more of an area but it leaves blind spots so they potentially could miss he's getting desperate yes and we're down to 24 hours before the deadline where the enterprise has to abandon the search and move on in order to get the medical supplies delivered on time back to the shuttle craft scottie jatano and spark are trying to figure out what equipment to toss while boma is outside because they have to find extra weight right to remove from the shuttle craft yeah and they're trying to get enough equipment off the shuttle craft so that they don't have to leave anyone behind and boma interrupts them because during all of that he's been off creating a burial service for latimer and spark refuse to go he as the captain you know the man in charge should say some nice words and he made mccoe do it because spark doesn't find this whole idea of hosting a funeral expending time and energy to dig a grave as a logical course of action they could better be focused on getting off the planet fixing the shuttle craft any deviation from that specific activity is a waste in spark size so they have that we don't get to see the service but we are able to hear more scratching noises that come closer and closer to the shuttle craft right as this is happening though spark and scottie do remain inside the shuttle craft and don't participate in the funeral they do a test on the fuel line it's still leaking and this test expends the rest of their normal fuel we resume our normal scratching outside the shuttle craft so boma remembers that spark said that the spear was primitive and not really great so he automatically assumes that these creatures are a tribe so they should just go in there and attack them right away right and everyone runs outside at the sound of the the noise returning there's a weird comment about spark having enhanced hearing abilities which is kind of yeah I don't necessarily remember if Vulcans have a higher sense of hearing based on their ears that would be a very quote-unquote on the nose yeah thing but spark tries to say that the scraping noise based on everything else they know is wood being scraped on leather so the wood of the spears being scraped on the leather shields of these ape-like aliens I don't think it sounds like woods scraping on leather it sounds like insects so yeah like whatever they could do to get a sound of a weird thing yeah we could have come up with something a little better sound department but yes bomin and pretty much the majority of the crew want to attack these aggressive aliens first as a show of dominance as a way to get them to cower to show them that they are not easy prey spark has the exact opposite reaction he in no way wants to be the aggressor he thinks that will agitate them and so he wants to come up with other alternatives to this other than straight blind violence against these creatures he even comments yeah how they don't value life but yet you know you're kind of stuck in a situation there right so spark is the commander comes up with his own plan he sends mccoi and the yoman back inside the shuttlecraft to help scottie continue to repair the shuttlecraft and he takes gatana and booma off on a scouting party and he tells them don't shoot them yeah you guys are going to follow me you gonna listen to my orders and instructions we are not going out there to hunt these creatures down we're not going to shoot them you will obey my orders and do exactly what I tell you because his his intent is to scare them to give the humans ish time to finish fixing up the shuttlecrafts thing get out of there correct so while they're scouting the beasts find them and they're throwing spears at them and oh my gosh one event through a shield right i was like okay why didn't they use that as a shield like literally i have no because it's too big i mean the it looks like it's bigger than three of them put together could have hidden under yeah and pay no attention to what direction the spears come from and what directions they shoot at because it's all mixed up well that was his intent though because he told them to shoot at 10 and two o'clock right so he's got to have some indication of where the spears are coming from and some indication of where they are again there's a lot of mist on the planet so they can't fully see i was just pointing out from a viewer's perspective and a television perspective it doesn't always match up wherever the interns are hiding behind the rocks and throwing the spears from off camera don't always match up what is supposed to be the actual direction of where the aliens are well i mean they look like hot dogs being thrown yes look like imagine not imagine a hot dog being thrown you're talking about the wiggle effect yes because they're not made with actual they're not actual spears they're made of their nerf spears they're 1960 yeah they're 1967 pooled noodle spears that's funny so they accomplished that and spark of so parodies like yes they're afraid so we have time now and they leave the tonneau all by himself and the two boma and spot go back to the craft to continue their repairs on the shuttle craft they tell gatano to stand guard i imagine it's not to hold off the aliens but it's more just to act as an advanced alarm so that if the aliens do come back gatano can sound the alarm to the shuttle craft to alert them that the aliens are returning but he has nothing to alarm them with except a phaser and his voice right and of course as soon as spark and boma walk away we hear again more in the distance more quiet but we hear that scraping noise return to signal that the aliens are still in fact out there they're stalking them so at the shuttle craft scottie it's like his he's excited because he thinks that he has a great way to get off the planet but it's gonna utilize the phasers he has to he's going to convert the phasers from the gun somehow to go into the shuttle craft he's taking the power source from the phasers the batteries and he's taking that energy and he's draining it from the phasers directly into the shuttle craft as a power source like juice yes like juice but as an alternative to the fuel that we saw bleed off and completely dissipate as they were testing the pressure of the fuel system if it works it works but of course bicoi does not want to give up his gun no one wants to give up their phaser no one wants to be defenseless but they need every phaser they need all the energy they can get to give them the best chance to lift off so we leave the shuttle craft in their working around with the phasers and we're back at the enterprise and guess what the transporter room can beam and beam back items in one piece right yay so Kurt calls for the landing parties to come to the transporter room and get ready to beam down to the planet but again I have no idea why they're going to the planet if they don't know where they are yes this would this is an extremely my hail Mary yes this is Kirk being extremely desperate he has enough men to spare for three away teams they are beaming down to three completely random parts of the planet as a extra way to try to find some sign of the crash shuttle craft huge desperate move definitely a big mistake low odds of succeeding but they beam down the away team we have a very dramatic scene where we cut back to gatano on the planet standing guard the aliens come back we get that image of the one ape alien zombie walk frankenstein walking and approaching gatano as gatano cowers and fear the attack him and we cut the commercial break we come back and mccoe and spock are and boma yes don't forget him they're standing around what looks to be a giant footprint right they must have been summoned to the spot where gatano was attacked based on his screams because that's where they were that's where they went back to that's where we come back from commercial break from and all they can find though is his phaser but where is gatano so this box like alright thank you for the phaser here you go mccoe please take that back to the shuttle craft you two can uh boma you can go also and i'll go look for gatano unarmed yes he's handed over all the phasers because spock is putting all of his eggs into this basket plan of the phasers will provide enough power for the shuttle craft to lift off from the planet so he too is kind of on the desperate side correct on his walk spock does find gatano and he is dead lying on a rock very valiantly yes but spock does you know i think a good thing he takes gatano back to the shuttle craft with him right it's not given any credit to spock in the moment but if you break it down spock is clearly shown that he doesn't find any logic in funeral ceremonies are bearing the dead he could have just left gatano where he found him and just reported back to the rest of the survivors that gatano was dead but he expends his energy to bring gatano back to the ship even under the face of a renewed attack from these ape like aliens that we see again he doesn't drop gatano and start running back himself he continues to exert the effort to bring gatano's body back to the shuttle craft inside the yeoman asks spock why these creatures are not afraid because according to spock they should be afraid but now they're coming back and mcoy jumps into the crux of the episode by pointing out finally the flaw in spock's thinking yeah spock was approaching every hurdle and every circumstance from a logical point of view and mcoy says these aren't creatures of logic these are creatures of emotion they're responding this way because they're responding in an emotional fashion they viewed spock's logical course to fire the warning shots they didn't view it from a point of logic they viewed it as it from a point of emotion they viewed it from a point of aggression so they're responding in kind exactly but so he still doesn't get it he's like everything should have happened but two people still died I mean come on spock get it right and then as they continue their attack as everyone's locked inside the shuttle craft one of the big creatures we get a far away shot starts trying to smash into the top of the shuttle using a rock apparently that's going to do the trick because everyone starts to freak out that it's going to take a couple hours for the phasors to have their energy transferred into the shuttle craft and the whole of the shuttle craft is not going to withstand that rock for the next couple hours we get a quick cut back to the enterprise we get more arguing between Kirk and Ferris he only has two hours and 42 minutes yes so the time is quickly ticking by more of a struggle of who's in charge Kirk comes out on top Ferris marches off because again yeah they've got just under three hours left before they have to leave we jump back to the shuttle craft and we have to get rid of this alien that is you know crushing our hole and Scotty comes up with a great idea to use the batteries that are used for the little extra systems on the ship thank you and he we don't need those right now so he tells everybody to ground themselves meaning you know don't touch anything metal and he starts turning on the batteries he started short circling the battery system that is what I was trying to say and letting sparks reflect and he uses the electricity from the batteries and redirects it throughout the hole of the ship electrifying the ship turning it into a giant electric fence to drive the aliens away it's the same thing that they do in 20,000 leagues under the sea when they need to drive the natives off of the submarine is they electrify the outer hole and I think they do that to an extent with the giant squid jack he's giving me a look like she's never seen 20,000 leagues under the sea I've been on the ride so I think we're gonna do a bonus patreon episode where we watch 20,000 leagues under the sea it's a good movie okay we can do that spark and booma are arguing on the shuttle craft about what to do with katana's body booma obviously wants to bury him just like Vladimir spark says no just leave him behind and they are you about it I mean booma even says if it I would bury you if it was you who died spark finally says to booma that sure go ahead and bury him but you know be careful about the creatures don't let them attack you too and now we switch back over to the enterprise and landing party two has been back but here it tells Kirk that there are casualties and injuries so Kirk wants to talk to lieutenant what happened the lieutenant reports that yes huge creatures 12 feet they're all over the place he is he doesn't have high hopes that the Galileo is alive at all right he does mention that ence no nio was stabbed or run through by one of the spears instead someone else dislocated a shoulder wasn't the best of times and they like surprised attack them right just as they did the Galileo 7 while he's doing that pharis he's back on the bread saying times up let's go time to deliver our medical supplies Kirk stands up and's like we can't go I have my people out there still what about the Columbus obviously they have to come back so Kirk calls them back he gets in his captain chair and tells doo to prepare to deliver the medical go on the route to go to the planet to deliver the supplies as they're making these preparations a horror reports to Kirk that the sensors are coming back online the radiation and the ion cloud is dispersing so they're getting their sensors back not coms but sensors so Kirk is again in an active desperation trying to figure out how can I squeeze out more time to search for the missing crew members especially now that the sensors are back online he gets a window of 23 minutes a little bit extra time because while the search parties down on the planet can get beamed up pretty quickly it's going to take 23 minutes for the shuttlecraft Columbus to redock with the enterprise we are back at the shuttlecraft and Scotty tells Spock that everything should be good to go with the phasers in eight minutes but we should launch in ten you know everybody in their seats so Spock says all right Boma you can bury him and then be back in that time frame or don't the Columbus Redox with the enterprise Kirk orders Sulu to depart the planet to resume their course to deliver the medical supplies but instead of calling for the ship to depart at a fast warp factor he orders them to depart at a much slower speed the factor one so they end up getting again just a little bit more time now that the sensors are back Kirk also orders the sensors to scan the planet the aft sensors so that they can continue to make some kind of scan of the planet as they're pulling away I assume the plan was we'll do that until we're out of sensor range of the planet then we'll go up to a faster warp speed while they're bearing the Tano the creatures have returned and they are throwing rocks and spears everything they can get a hold on and so everybody what McCoy and Boma are almost back to the shuttlecraft but Spock is pinned to the mountain by a rock yeah it's a quick cut in the scene Spock while McCoy and Boma initially are running to the shuttlecraft to seek safety Spock does run out further toward the attackers picks up one of the spears that's been thrown and throws the spear back he's covering their retreat which is why he's so much further out when they throw the rock and trap his leg up against another rock and so the two go back to get him as he's shouting for them to leave him yes he wants to just they go save yourselves you know but then I can know we're not going to leave you and they get him out from underneath the rock and they all get back on the shuttle the shuttle holding it down at least the yom and thinks that because they're move trying to move but can't yeah again it's frustrating or hard to follow because they're actively avoiding showing the creatures on camera too much it maybe is to attempt to add suspense maybe it's for another reason we'll get to at the end but in any case in this particular instance it just makes it very confusing as to why they can't take off they say that there are I think there's multiple creatures at this point either who have climbed on top of the shuttlecraft or they're physically pinning it down but in any case it's too heavy for the shuttlecraft to take off so their solution is to fire their boosters as they describe it these would be separate from the engines that are trying to get them out into orbit the boosters would have been utilized in space to keep them in orbit to provide that thrust to prevent them from having a decane orbit and to fall back into the atmosphere okay I was going to ask you what a decane orbit was that is when an object is not moving fast enough to keep an escape velocity of a planet or other object so it is moving so slow that the gravity of the planet would eventually pull the shuttlecraft back in toward it and they will burn up in the atmosphere oh that does not sound like fun so they fire their boosters they get the extra thrust they manage to get up into orbit but again they fired their boosters it utilized some of their fuel they now don't really have enough fuel to stay in orbit very long Scotty says they can be up there for about 45 minutes and during this time they all are discussing how they don't want to die in orbit they want to go home of course but I don't think being burned up would be fun no and definitely the other option that existed before this was to fly up to orbit hopefully get noticed but if they didn't get noticed they would have enough energy and fuel to come back and control their descent to the planet and reland they'd be stuck there but they'd be alive but none of it's a good situation and I mean Spock even comments that oh I could have been mistaken and then McCoy dryly says well at least I've lived enough to hear that yes like they have to still poke at each other yes while they're up in that orbit and it is dying Spock is like all right here we go and he secretly flips like a toggle that's called a jettison boost I know I said it the wrong way but it like went really fast it's yeah they don't actually accelerate all that he does is he vents or jettisons or dumps all the remaining fuel that they have oh my gosh I did it I just oh yeah it's like when an airplane needs to come in for an emergency landing but they have a bunch of fuel on board they dump the fuel they jettison here I am just watching you going do do do do and that's oh my gosh yeah so what did they weren't happy no so they dump they Spock dumps all the fuel out the back of the shuttlecraft it ignites and creates this big trail the whole point is to make themselves more visible to the enterprise that is Spock's entire plan like a distress signal like a flare oh okay that makes sense now so but of course Spock isn't very good at explaining his thought process in the moment no it works but the consequence of it in the moment is they go from having 45 minutes of energy and fuel to stay in orbit to now roughly one single orbit and they're gonna burn up in the atmosphere in six minutes thankfully though on the enterprise soo-loo takes a peek at the screen you know as he's supposed to and he sees something bright something that wasn't there before it's not a meteorite it's the shuttlecraft yes it's them so let's get to the transporter room and beam him over yeah it looks pretty cool well again we're watching we're watching the remastered version not the original version so we get to see these remastered graphics as opposed to what they look like in 1967 we'll have to google it's it's um we will have to google as i have memory alpha opened here but yeah a major difference between the original and the remaster it it is it's pretty the shuttlecraft starts it's burning up through the decay the decaying orbit that we just learned about as it reenters the atmosphere and that's kind of like their last time but your hero stays the day and she's like i've got him locked on target activate that beam and they end up beaming all five remaining of the Galileo 7 onto the enterprise moments before the Galileo shuttle burns up in the atmosphere and they don't know who though which five no and we never even learn it like we don't see them no it's definitely just they get a report that five have been up alive it's a funny moment because Kirk seems relieved where he goes okay we got him but Kirk would have no way of knowing that who's alive latano latano whatever their name katano katano and latamir was trying to combine their names katano and latamir are dead Kirk would have no way of knowing that so when a hero reports that they have five survivors on board alive Kirk should have been a little curious is to which two were dead but regardless he had a law on his mind yep and then he tells Kirk tell solu to go to marcus three to deliver the medical supplies sometime later we're back on the bridge and spark just walks right on into his normal spot and Kirk wanders over and like so tell me about desperation i heard jolonez an emotional aspect and how how could it be logical right like just admit that you have emotions dude yeah just basically grubbing spark in good nature but trying to get him to admit that the jettison manoeuvre of the fuel to ignite it i mean seems pretty logical to me one way or another you're gonna end up burning up in the atmosphere you might as well do everything you can to be noticed seems pretty logical but they're trying to point out that it would have been an illogical move it was born out of desperation desperation is an emotion it's a human trait so spark admit that you just had your first moment where you did something based on emotion instead of logic and he still won't agree to it no mr. spark says he wouldn't describe his actions as that way everyone kind of laughs the episode rolls to credits so jackie what did you think about season one episode 16 the gallaleo seven well i really loved it at first but then i learned all about these big holes and then i'm like bummed but i still like it yeah again it's kind of a middle of the road episode for me it's entertaining yeah it's the first introduction of the shuttle craft huge for star trek but at the end of the day it's not an episode that i would include in any kind of top 10 ranking for the season it's not bad so it's more like a like a feel good episode yeah just in the background yeah it's something that is i think entertaining but it's not a standout episode that makes sense but with that we have our few fun triple tidbits or fun facts about the episode and why do we call them triple tidbits jackie because tribbles are great because jackie has no idea what a triple is she just knows them to be soft and fluffy we have one we have two they two yeah we've got you pointed to the one i know about there's another one floating around i got so excited i have two stuffed tribbles that i got from the star trek experience in lost vegas when i visited ones brown ones gray and if you smack them they make the little triple noise and they kind of vibrate so you didn't you knew they vibrate i did not know they made noise oh my gosh i'm gonna be i can't fight i can't wait to get in you know yeah let's not do it on the episode but our triple tidbits the episode first aired January 5th 1967 happy new year fru-fu first episode of 1967 mentioned several times by us this is going to be the first introduction of the shuttlecraft in all of its glory it is in the original series the footage that was filmed of the shuttlecraft everything involving the shuttlecraft in space all the stock footage it departing the enterprise flying around all of that stuff this is the only episode where they actually collect that footage for the rest of the series they use the same footage over and over and over again they just reverse the negative they add different backgrounds to it i mean those people are creative yep saves money for sure the model of the shuttlecraft that they used for filming to capture all of this footage was made by a company called aluminum model toys it's a toy company they only got paid through the exclusive rights to produce a toy model kit to be sold commercially so they saw the potential of Star Trek they said hey we won't charge you anything we'll make all of these i mean it would have been like one or two these little models that you can use to film all of the stock footage that you need for your television show and in return we want the ability and the exclusive rights to make toy model kits for kids to build so it's like the first collab yes tiktok famous also mentioned several times spark of course is not a captain but this is his first command mission the first mission where he's put in charge officially i'll just point out many of the behavior of the other crew members would have been classified as insubordinate on this mission they did not follow orders they fought back they argued certainly bomo was the biggest instigator who came away from that mission likely if we were to see it on television and on camera many of them would have faced court marshals even mccoi would have faced some court martial actions for some of his comments because spark does outrank mccoi that's why he told them on the scouting mission just do it i say dudes right if you dig further into star trick lore in the novelization um called dreadnought it is revealed in that novel that boma is in fact court martialed because of his actions on this mission but he's court marshalled at the insistence and based on the report from scottie not spark yeah because he made scottie do all that extra work right but when in the novel it's revealed spark does not write up a report that favors that unf that paints boma in an unfavorable light that led to the court martial it is scottie's report and scottie's insistence that boma faced being court martialed and in fact that court martial led to boma being kicked out of starfleet yank you'll also notice at the very end in the epilogue scene when they're all on the bridge making fun of spark and pushing up against spark yomin is there mccoi scottie spark curk no boma no they said you can stay down there with your shuttlecraft yeah i don't know if boma just you can read too much into it you can read as much into it as you want maybe it was just an oversight pide break maybe he was at the bathroom maybe he wasn't on shift maybe he was in detention and he was under arrest for being court martialed who knows but it's just a fun little foreshadowing to what's gonna happen we alluded to the fact that there were several parts of the episode that's frustrating because we don't get clear shots of the a polite creatures a lot of them are obscured in the mist of the planet they hold their shields up to their face we get a back shot of one of the creatures approaching one of the crew members but we never get to see their face they did have faces obviously they had makeup but it was determined that the makeup was so grotesque the television sensors said you can't use any scenes that show them and what we see today is like 80 times more yeah so are there like secret photos online i'm sure you can dig up photographs of what their makeup was i and i don't really know if they i don't know the full backstory i didn't dive too deep into it i don't know if they're wearing the makeup during shooting i don't know if the decision to censor what they look like came during pre-production as they were doing makeup tests and when they said they're too rotest they said we'll just fine we just won't do any makeup on them and never show their face i don't know and the same vein when latimer is stabbed by the spear that's thrown and into his back and kills him that was deemed too graphic so in post-production they added extra mist and extra smoke to obscure that as well so again yoman rand was in the script she was going to be the yoman as part of the crew and because actress gracefully wittonese contract was not renewed after eight episodes and she was not part of the show anymore they wrote in a different yoman just like they did for shortly last week that's sad and our last triple tidbit this is going to be the first use of the rank ensign in star track it was mentioned and used when they reported the death of ensigno niel who died as part of the search party how exciting and devastating at the same time yes yes that is your moment in history ensigno niel rest in peace but those are your triple tidbits so this is the part of our episode where we give a rank for the episode a ranking system is based on the idea or the theory that we have a fictitious starship each of us and we rank the episode as if the episode were a member of our crew rather than giving in a boring old ranking of one to ten a higher rank means not only we were more entertained by the episode as we watched it today but we find it to be a more important crew member to our ship more vital for its function a lower rank of course means the opposite we weren't that entertained by the episode and it's more of a disposable member of our crew if the episode didn't exist in the show we would be more okay with that starting at the bottom of our rankings we have ensign lieutenant junior grade lieutenant and then we hit our upper ranks which we are limiting the total number of ranks we can give out lieutenant commander total of seven commander total number of five captain or a ten out of ten would be one and then we have an admiral rank which is the ten plus out of ten the perfect episode if none of that makes sense because this is an audio podcast and this is a very visual gag everyone can check out our current rankings over on our patreon at patreon.com/treksandtangents we post an updated visual ranking of each episode up to this recording on Wednesdays the day after the episode what goes live so jackie for your starship this season the USS Galactic Glitterby last week you gave shore leave a rank of commander which would be like an eight or nine out of ten and that completely filled up your commander spot what rank do you give this week's episode the Galileo 7 and why i really wanted to demote somebody from the commander but then you gave all your information and then i had to change my opinion way will is don't let me influence your ranking make it is entered make it about as entertained as you were when you watched the episode not after i found i messed up my notes not after i not all not after i cropped all over it well i really liked it and i would have given it commander but i don't know who did the moe yeah that's a problem because you don't have a spot open for commanders on your ship i'm so sorry but i need to demote my dagger of the mind so you're gonna take dagger of the mind out of commander i assume because you're gonna rank the Galileo 7 as a commander yes okay and putting spark and spark so where are you gonna demote dagger of the mind to ding it i'm gonna put them in the lieutenant the lieutenant okay so we're gonna dump that down to not dump that's a negative word we're just gonna readjust slightly below middle of the road why is the Galileo 7 going to rank higher now than dagger of the mind why are you giving it that rank because i love that they keep showing spark that you can show your emotional side you can still be yourself and be logical and you know this should be this way but also if you feel something you can also you know communicate and people might like you you don't have to be mean and ruthless so i know that wasn't like straight out what they said but all of that craziness that happened it was kind of like the gist of the show episode i think all right all right mine's gonna be much simpler than all of that i'm going to give this episode for the USS cosmic shark a rank of lieutenant again just below middle of the road there's an unlimited number of lieutenants that we can have on the ship it again is a entertaining episode it very much on a shallow surface for me provides classic star trek fight the aliens tension technical babble re convert energy into batteries shock a bunch of aliens on the ship but at the end of the day it's just that there is the whole underlying plot of spark having to realize that logic is not always the solution to all of life's problems doesn't do enough for me to elevate this beyond the rank of lieutenant so that's where it's gonna stay just for comparison as of this recording on iamdb this episode is ranked 7.6 out of 10 again about a middle of the road ranking for star trek episodes this season not bad just not a above and beyond episode again if you didn't follow any of that we will post visual representations of where the ranking stand on our patreon on wednesday the day after this episode goes live everywhere you can find it anyone can find it anyone can view it at patreon.com/treksintangents we'll be back next week to check through another episode but before we go we'll give our turbo lift tease or elevator pitch to next week's episodes plot i will give jackie the title of the next episode and jackie with no other information and without having seen the episode before we'll now try to give a brief pitch to what she thinks the plot will be jackie next week's episode is entitled the squire of gothos iamdb is a person to be what's gonna be one person of course he's gonna be very full of himself and he like the town cryer of gothos like the the rumor mill there we go i'm gonna go with that all right tune in next week to see how accurate jackie's prediction is head on and with that we'll wrap up thank you everyone if you want more show information you can find and directly support our podcast on patreon at patreon.com/treksintangents again for everyone we post our episode rankings every Wednesday on the fourth friday of the month we post a little sight adventure called animated detours for our crew members and supporters where we dive into the episodes of the animated series for star trek very much like these episodes except far more off track way more tangents silly because it's a cartoon we also have posted on our patreon for our crew members every test episode that we recorded to kind of work out some of the bugs of our real podcast we did a couple episodes of fringe we did many episodes of stargate sg1 if you like these episodes hopefully you'll like some of those episodes they're a little more raw they're a little more unrefined but they're there if you want to not part but they're there if you want to listen to them you can also follow us on x.com at treks_ tangents we're also on instagram and blue sky at treks and tangents jackie working people find you and what are you up to you can find me over on instagram at jibboum
