Desert Valley Blitz

EP#15-Three Valley Contenders Fall Short As We Celebrate Their Seasons And Launch Coach’s Corner

CV Hustle Studios Season 1 Episode 15

Three semifinal dreams, one unforgettable season. We dig into a valley-wide playoff push that showcased grit, growth, and the thin margins that decide November football. Palm Springs’ trip to Barstow set the tone: a 7–0 jump, a missed chance to make it 14–0, and a second quarter where Barstow’s 4–3 front suffocated runs and flipped momentum for good. Sloppy rain and a chewed-up field turned the second half into a defensive stalemate, but the film doesn’t lie—Barstow’s front seven looked collegiate, and one bad quarter became the difference between a storybook finish and a long bus ride home.

Palm Desert and Beckman waged a defensive chess match that stayed tight until attrition took over. With AJ Rivera limited, the Aztecs couldn’t lean on their usual inside read, and Beckman’s front squeezed the run fits just long enough for a bruising back to find daylight late. It stung, but it also highlighted how far Palm Desert climbed: a senior-heavy roster that raised the bar and leaves a blueprint for the next wave. Meanwhile, Coachella Valley and Grace lit up the scoreboard, 49–42, in a mirror-match of tempo, RPO layers, and precision throws. Camargo exploded early, Grace answered with a quarterback dropping advanced back-shoulder timing, and the game came down to who had the ball last. Coachella ran out of seconds, not answers.

We close by turning the page with momentum, not excuses. Three valley teams in the semifinals is a milestone, especially a year removed from earlier exits. The themes are clear: win the trenches, protect the ball in bad weather, manage red-zone sequencing, and shore up late-game conditioning so four-yard dives don’t become forty-yard backbreakers. And we’re not going quiet in the offseason—Coach’s Corner is launching, starting with legend Dan Armstrong, to pull back the curtain on the philosophies and habits that build sustained success. If you care about smart football, local talent, and stories that sharpen your eye on Friday night, you’ll want to stay close.

SPEAKER_00:

Welcome back everybody to Desert Valley Blitz. It's a bittersweet day here in the studio, right, Coach? Yeah. It's a week 14 wrap-up, and this will also be the last wrap-up of the 2025 season. Cause as you guys all may know, that all our teams are officially out of the playoffs. But we're gonna we're gonna pay some homage to the guys that were still around and kind of go over the games we saw this week, Coach. So we're gonna go ahead and start with the game, Coach's game of the week. Uh Palm Springs going up to Barstow. Palm Springs the number one seed uh in Division 7 had to go on the road to face a tough Barstow team. And I I got to see film on this one, Coach. And Barstow, man, we might have been sleeping on how good they were. They had some good guys, huh? They they had some real talent, especially on that defensive, that defensive front. I mean, I'm sure there's a couple D1 guys on that on that. They always have some really good guys up there, man. Yeah. It was pretty evident by watching the film that you know Barstow was was a step, a step above what Palm Springs had seen, at least defensively all year.

SPEAKER_02:

That feel didn't help either, though.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, and it was kind of a sloppy, sloppy feel from what I hear to people from people that traveled up there. But Palm Springs, to their credit, they jumped out early, 7-0. Bishop Miller had them in the end zone. They caused the fumble on the first series. I was like, here we go. Yeah, you know, that Palm Springs magic all year. They've they've kind of done that all year, kind of playing with bit the bigger teams on the road and and hanging in. Um, and that first first series, they turned the ball over. It looks like, okay, we're here we go. Palm Springs is coming out to play again. Second series, they turn, I think I believe they turned it over again and had a chance to go up 14-0 down down in the red zone. But then credit to that Barstow defense, man. They they stopped him cold. Koa had a couple couple runs, but it's the first time I've ever seen Koa like actually get stopped in the hole and not kind of go forward. Yeah because their their front seven was that good for Barstow. So, you know, Palm Springs had their opportunities. If they could have got 14-0, I mean that totally would have swung the momentum. But unfortunately, it just didn't happen. And then Palm Springs had probably their worst quarter of the year in that second quarter. The second quarter. Defensively, yeah. And they gave up 28 points pretty quickly too. Three touchdowns. Three touchdowns, and then mostly in the run game. Yeah. Barstow kind of lined up in some heavy packages and just ran it down their throat and got out on them. They had a couple big plays. Um, you know, Palm Springs did kind of mount a comeback there. You know, Bishop Miller's not gonna let them, you know, not let them die easily. Heck no. In the second third, in the third quarter, they kind of made a little run. They they uh Tank Smith, the the freshman phenom had a big run and he got them down to like the the two-yard line. I think he must have had like a 50-yard run, and okay, okay, here you go. Palm Springs coming back, here we go. We're gonna get this 14-28. And the very next play, one of those Barstow tackles that are looked like a D1 guy just shot the gap, blew up the running back, fumble, and they fell on top of him. That was the end of that drive. And then basically from that point on, it was just a defensive stalemate. But um, you know, shout out to shout out to Palm Springs, man. They had a great season, they kind of ran into a buzz on that Barstow defense. I mean, that might have been the best defense from top to bottom I've seen on film all year. They they had some they looked like they had some D1 guys on that team. Sounds like they just had like one bad quarter. The rest of the game, I mean, basically Palm Springs played them toe to toe in that second half. It was a pretty sloppy second half. Um, you know, they were both turning the ball over. The field became an issue, I think, in that second half. Guys are slipping. It was raining now. It was raining. Bishop Miller couldn't get his feet set to throw the ball because of the pressure, and you know, their offense kind of puttered out. Um, but defensively they hung in there. You know, Palm Springs gonna battle. Um, it was just came down to that second quarter. That second quarter. Yeah, that second quarter, they gave up a lot of big plays in the run game. Um, Barstow kind of switched momentum, and then second half, it was just kind of they were just kind of sitting on the ball, and and that was all she wrote for for that magical season of Palm Springs.

SPEAKER_02:

It was a magical season, man. It was fun following them all year. Um, they it was historic. I mean, that they had a great record. I mean I was really rooting for them. I was I thought they would pull it out, but Barstow just they're good up there. It was a home field, those those coin flips matter, you know? Yeah, I mean geez, yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

It would have been a different ball game had it been at Palm Springs for sure. I think you're in a like a Hart situation where it's like a one possession game because you know I think Hart might have might have been just as talented as Barstow, just Barstow's on at home, you know, you get a little extra juice at home. They had a nice quarterback, huh? Yeah, they had a nice, I mean Barstow's an impressive team. I I like I said the defense to me was man, that that that front that front seven was nasty. They're running a 40. They're running a 4-3, and they had two defensive ends that could just really get after it. Yeah, and it was it was a beautiful as a defensive guy, it was a beautiful thing to see. It's just you don't want to see it against your own team. So, you know, so that was kind of the end of the road for Palm Springs, a magical season. I I still contend they were the they had the best season of anybody here in the valley just from me, yeah. Yeah, they had two they had two bad quarters from what I saw. They had the bad quarter against Palm Desert, that second quarter against Palm Desert, and then they had a bad quarter on the road in the semifinal game. And you know, when you do that, you know, you're gonna you're gonna usually lose to a good opponent. So shout out to the Indians, though, man. They they had a great season. Bishop Miller had a great season. It was one follow up. High motor. I mean, just all over the place. Even in this end defeat, he was all over the place. So that guy's gotta be in contention for the for the all CAF team for sure. Usually she's definitely gonna be first team on that. Um Bishop Miller and the guys, you know, they they got some guy, they got some seniors that'll be kind of saying this is their swan song, but you know, Palm Springs always reloads, they'll have uh some young bucks coming in.

SPEAKER_02:

It always feels I always tell people like you know, when you lose at the end of the season, everyone's losing except the champion, you know. So everyone has that that bad feeling in their heart. And I I remember a coach told me it might have been Armstrong a long time ago. It's like when you lose uh what's it how's it go? It goes when you when you do when you lose a game, uh it feels like you lose a piece of your soul. But when you win, it feels like you're reborn. And that's what it's like. Like football is just you put so much passion into it, and you got all these positive um opportunities and and and possibilities and and and winning the championship, and then all of a sudden it's over, and it's just you keep like rewinding the game in your head. Like if we would have just did this or if we would have done that, we would have won. And it's hard to like accept that that loss. And um man, I feel for those kids, man. It's it's tough, man.

SPEAKER_00:

Because I've been there before, so it's tough, but it happens to all of us. It does, you know, and and the sun will rise, and your career, if you're good enough, will continue. A lot of those kids on Palm Springs are gonna be playing at the next level.

SPEAKER_02:

100%.

SPEAKER_00:

So, you know, it's not over, it's just a new beginning. And then for all you underclassmen, hey, see, you got like three months off, and then you know, it's back to back to football. So get that weight room, get get ready to go. But shout out to the Indians, man. Great season. We love following you. We uh thank Coach Gore for coming in and talking to us. He was awesome. Thank the Palm Springs community for inviting us in to cover your games. Yeah, we had a blast. We felt right at home out there.

SPEAKER_02:

We won't forget it.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, and we definitely look forward to seeing you guys in the summer, see what we're gonna run it back. It's gonna be tough to match this season just because it was so magical. But you know, if anybody can do it, you guys can do it. So shout out to the Indians. Great job, guys. We we enjoy covering you guys. So moving on to the second game, Coach, in the wrap up, the Palm Desert goes out to Beckman and Irvine. Another great game. Final score 28 Beckman, Palm Desert 14. I know that we're on the losing side again. You got to check out this game. What were your takeaways from that?

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, it was a great defensive battle. I mean, uh Beckman like matched up really well with Palm Desert. They had some big kids up front. Um, really was able to just kind of contain that offense uh uh with their defense. And I I think you know, AJ being hurt kind of mobility looked a little suspect, like he couldn't move like he usually does. And one of their best plays is that inside read play, and uh he runs it so well, and I they weren't running it because obviously um he had that hurt uh ankle, and but hats off to him. He still moved the ball really well through the air, um, but it just wasn't enough to sustain drives. I think you know, I like that Palm Desert offense when they had that run game going and didn't really get that run game going. And um Beckman just kind of pulled up pulled away at the end there. But they had a big running back, man, big strong kid.

SPEAKER_00:

Some big runs in the fourth quarter, right?

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, he got into the DBs, and the DBs were like, oh shoot, how we can tackle this big boy. And uh he was able to put some stiff arms on some of those DBs and and make some long runs, and it just um that that seemed to be the uh the difference between the two teams, yeah. And just kind of warmed down there at the end.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, but a defensive battle nonetheless, it was 7-0 at the half, right? I mean they backman didn't score until go in the second quarter, so it was 0-0 for a long time. Yeah, they got a deep pass there and kind of yeah, they kind of got over the top of one play, but that was it. I mean, the defense play lights out. I think it was maybe just a case of them being on the field a lot. A lot, you know.

SPEAKER_02:

You get worn down a little bit.

SPEAKER_00:

Even great defenses, you know, if they are on the field too much, that's when the run game starts to pop. Those two yards, three yards start becoming five, six, ten, forty, you know.

SPEAKER_02:

And it did look like the running plays were getting bottled up, and then all of a sudden he'd spit out the out the back, and then long run, you know, geez.

SPEAKER_00:

You can tell the defense was a little tired, a little gassed at the end, and that's when those big runs started. But hey, shout out to the Aztecs. They had a great season, nonetheless. I mean, semifinal, they're one game away from the final. I mean, they this may be one of the like when people look back on this team, this may be one of the best Aztecs teams we've seen in the last 25 years. They were they were they were great on all levels. Um, you know, 18 of 22 guys are seniors, so that's a that's a lot to lot to reload. Coach Fordy's gonna have his work cut out for him, but man, some of these, some of these seniors you're replacing are some of the all-time greats. Jonah Tolan, I mean, what a talent. Yeah. AJ Rivera, what a talent. Yeah, yeah. Jackson Bishop on the defensive side, you know, fantastic football player. On uh Ochoa and Diaz on the defensive side. I mean, they got they got guys everywhere.

SPEAKER_02:

So that's what happens when you get a good team, man.

SPEAKER_00:

All of a sudden everyone's an all-star, you know. Yeah, I mean, uh, they everybody they make each other better, right? Yeah. So, you know, shout out to the Aztecs, man. I think this what it hurts right now, but I think when it's all said and done, and when you actually look back, yeah, and you get old like us, and you're looking back at your career going, hey, I was on one of the best Palm Desert teams of all time. We all we're one game away from a final in division eight, which is not an easy task, you know. So, you know, shout out to the Aztecs and Coach 40. He had a he had a great run. I think the hot the hottest team at the end of the year for by first.

SPEAKER_02:

They really peaked at the right, right part of the season, and just I think that injury to AJ kind of hurt that offense a little bit at the bad time. The running game. They were they were humming on offense a couple weeks ago.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, and they couldn't just really get the running game going because of AJ because of that injury. So that's football and that's life, right? That's life, and that's how that's why we play his game for the uncertainty of it, you know. You get it this far into the playoffs, all the teams are good, man. You're not you don't get no easy games. Oh no. Yeah. And I think it's another case of if that had been Beckman had to come out here. Now they're yeah, you might you might see a different result because you got to take that that bus ride into consideration. That's worth at least a touchdown, in my opinion. Um, so you know, that's just those coin flips back in the past. Man, being on the road is tough, especially against a good opponent, semifinals. But all in all, a great season for Pondes. Yeah, it's fun following you guys, man. It had a blast. Yeah, and we were out there quite a bit this year, and you guys were nothing but hospital to us, and you know, your coaching staff and your AD. Shout out to all you guys. You guys were great. We loved covering you guys. Even this, even this Blackhawk over here had to admit that Pondazer was a pretty cool place to watch a game, right?

SPEAKER_02:

They did good this year, man. They played really good.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, so we're we're looking forward to covering you guys next year as you reload. You got I know we know you got some talent coming back. Um, so we're gonna be looking in the summer to kind of follow you guys and see what's going on.

SPEAKER_02:

But yeah, we got some plans for the offseason. We'll go over that later.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, that'll be the last half of this show. We'll kind of spill the beans on what we're up to over here. But you know, once again, shout out to Palm Desert. Great season. You know, you're the last one of the last teams standing, and you know, that that program's nothing but in the going in the right direction with those four. So and then lastly, we're gonna go over the last game here. Our our last team standing in Division 12. We had four desert teams start. Yeah, one desert team still remained as of last week, the Coachella Valley Arabs. They were at home. So hey, we thought, hey, we got home game, we got a good opportunity to get someone to the finals. Um, unfortunately, they ran into an offensive buzzaw called Grace, and the final score on this one is uh Grace 49, Coachella 42. It seemed like the team that would have the ball last would actually win this game because pretty much what happened, yeah. There was no stops being made in this game, right?

SPEAKER_02:

Both offenses were humming, man. They were they were throwing heavyweight blows back and forth. Um Camargo came out hot, man. He he came out, got to that line, he hit those big steps. I think his first two touches were like long touchdowns. And we were we were I was like, oh, here we go. But Grace, man, hats off to them. They they run a nice offense. They were like mirrored uh images of each other. They both have very similar offenses, similar defenses. And um, I don't I didn't I don't know who the the quarterback for Grace is, but he's he was good, man. I saw him, uh I I knew they they ran an out and up concept. Like I don't want to bore you guys, but basically the outside guy has like some type of in-route slant or post, and the number two receiver runs an out and up, like chair route. And um a lot of times you see the a high school kid, you know, he'll throw it deep down the sideline, but he threw it a rope, back shouldered it because they were in a zone, you know, and they had the high safety. So and the quarterback saw that and he threw it back shoulder right at the sideline. And uh once I saw that, I was like, oh shoot.

SPEAKER_00:

These guys are well coached.

SPEAKER_02:

This guy can play, dude. This is gonna be a game, and it's sure enough, man, it was a game. So they had a good running back too.

SPEAKER_00:

And uh Jake Williams was his name. He I guess he was like a spitting image of Camargo, right?

SPEAKER_02:

The whole team it felt like the whole even the up front, they were very similar, man. I was enjoying the trench battle. Um, Coachella was I they might have even won the up front a little bit, but they just you know, it's like you said, it's like whoever has the ball last was gonna win that win that night.

SPEAKER_00:

So just couldn't come up with a stop when they had to. It came down to one possession, and Grace kind of went down there and scored with 40 seconds left to take the lead. It was it was it's a tie. They come, but you know, they left them 40 seconds.

SPEAKER_02:

Fantastic game to watch, man. If you guys get a chance to watch that, go find it online somewhere, get some popcorn. Yeah, and you're gonna see some fireworks, man. It was fun.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. So unfortunately, uh for Coachella and for us, they did they came up on the wrong end of that shootout, though. They did they have they just ran out of time. I'm sure I'm sure Coach Johnson would say we just ran out of time. If we had had the ball another two minutes, we would have scored. So another good season, man. Another great season. I mean, semifinals. So that that matches the deepest run Coachella's had in, you know, 30, 40 years, yeah, since the semifinals. Um, they've not made the finals in a while, but you know, on the right track as always. They do lose some components. Uh Camargo, man, what a what a season that guy had, huh? What a beast, yeah. I mean, what a what a great running back. I mean he and think about who he had to come in and fill fill in for, you know, the legendary Aaron Ramirez. Yeah, I think he learned a couple things, maybe. He did a pretty dang good impression, you know. He's a different back, but the numbers are styled. But the numbers are similar. I know. So the numbers are similar. So I don't know who's following next, but you got some big shoes to fill, whoever that is.

SPEAKER_02:

At some point, you got to give the old line a little credit, man. They they're they're opening holes for that guy, um, whoever's back there. And uh I like Camargo's vision, man. I think he he does find a really he does a really good job of finding the open hole and hitting it hard, and he's such a big, strong, powerful kid. And um, if you're gonna tackle him, man, you gotta bring lunch because he's he's he's strong, man. So man, it was I I really thought we were gonna have at least one of these teams get to the finals. Man, we had three. I was like, oh, here we go. The numbers are with us. Damn it turned out all three. I just I hope you guys can feel like the disappointment we had because we we've all been there, we're coaches, and we were rooting for you, man.

SPEAKER_00:

We wanted to see a final in the valley. That was kind of what we were planning on. Thanksgiving and then going to see a uh final football game covering. But would have been dope. You know, the football gods had other ideas as they usually do. But I mean, you can't you can't discount the the season that Coachella had. They started pretty rough and they end up winning six six in a row to get to the semifinals and then it's come up a little short. So I mean, Coach Johnson did a hell of a job out there. Great job. You know, they did the coaching, whole coaching staff, you know, showed their show that they're top, one of the top in the valley. Kids played out, yeah. And the kids they didn't, I mean, and then Coachella's got some guys coming back. I mean, Ivan Gars is coming back, their quarterback. Nice um that that defense defensive uh stud on on uh number eights, uh Sebastian Castillo. Yeah, he's coming back, he's a junior. Um, so they got some they got some guys, they got some talent, they got some stars coming back, so Coachella will be right back there. Um, but you know, once again, another great season. Good season, man. You know, Coach Johnson seems to just keep turning them out, you know. That's that's what he does. So shout out to the the Arabs. Um, you know, great season. We love covering you guys. Yeah, it was fun. And uh, you know, we'll be we'll be checking in again. Come come May and April. We'll be checking in, see what you guys are doing and seeing uh seeing what's going on out there in Coachella. So good job, guys. Shout out to the Arabs. Um, and that's gonna do it for this wrap-up, and that's gonna do it for the wrap-up for the year of 2025, coach. I can't believe it's it's already come to an end, you know. It was fun, man.

SPEAKER_02:

It felt like we just started this a couple weeks ago, but it flew by. Flew by. I don't know if it wasn't I I think it was because I wasn't there coaching every day, but I was just kind of doing this once a week. But uh it I had fun, man. So I just like to you players and coaches outside, I thank you, man. It was fun just covering you and and and just getting to talk about the good games and the good matchups. And I'm I'm just really a fan of everybody out there that does that work. So thank you.

SPEAKER_00:

And that's why we do this show. We wanna we want to that's why we do this show because we want to give shine the light on the good coaches and players in this valley and that need it because you know I think this year we've kind of proven that the valley football is pretty good. Yeah, you know, we had three teams in the semifinals. That's pretty that's pretty impressive if you actually sit back and think about it. I know we're disappointed this week, but when we look back, we'll be like, hey, you know, we had three teams that were right there. And it's not like the last time that's happened. I don't think it has ever happened. Yeah. So, you know, and then remember the year before, we were all everybody was out as of week two in the quarters. So improvement on all sides, and that's what this is all about to live uplift valley football and and kind of shine a light on the guys that are doing really good work out there. So, all right. SPEAKER_00:

Welcome back, everybody, to Desert Valley Blitz. This is our final weekly wrap-up of 2025, and it's a bittersweet day. But hey coach, so you know, now that the season's over, what are what are we gonna be doing around here?

SPEAKER_02:

Well, we got uh we got the coaches corner coming up where we have the coaches come in and we get to kind of learn more about them, their personal life, how maybe how they got started, uh, maybe get some insights of of their coaching philosophy. Um it it's gonna be fun, man. We got we got a lot of good coaches lined up. I think we're gonna start with the legend, um, Mr. Dan Armstrong first, and um we'll get going after that, man. It'll be fun.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, it's real exciting. Um, Dan Armstrong came in here when he was down in the valley. We got to catch him. So that's gonna be coming up, being released here shortly within probably a week. So everybody needs to keep those notifications on. Yeah, you know, and we keep following us on Instagram and on YouTube because you know that all that stuff will be rolled out. And it's always good to get the coaches in here and kind of get them outside of their team and just kind of figure hear about you know how they got into the got into the coaching realm and and some of their philosophies.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, and I I learned a ton, man, just talking to them even off the air, just kind of picking their brain a little bit. And I think it's been the biggest uh highlight for me this season, just kind of getting to to just to learn how they look at the game and how they approach things. And um, I'm I'm always learning, so I'm here to learn and um why not from the best in the desert.

SPEAKER_00:

So yeah, it's good to hear other people's perspectives too. You know, all these all you coaches out there that do follow us and listen to us, you know. I I've learned a lot just sitting down with with some of these guys, and honestly, like you see why they're in the positions they are, because a lot of them are brilliant dudes and they got some real good philosophies, and you know you can always learn from a real smart football coach. So that's kind of the goal of the coach's corners. We want to sit down and kind of build a community around us coaches here. I know that there's always flux in our line of work, right? You know, never there's always gonna be some musical chairs at the end of the year, and a guy that's here may not be there anymore, but but you know, that I think some of those those truths remain, you know, that that the things that you coach and the things that you bring to these young men will stay the same no matter what color you're wearing. And so that's kind of the goal of the coach's corner is to give you coaches some more insight and you players to kind of see some, you know, how your coaches may some of you guys, I didn't know how some of my coaches started and how they got it. I didn't either the coaching realm, you know. That this is kind of that's where we start with these interviews. We take it way back to how did you even get into coaching? Because you know, just because you're a player doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna be a good coach. Yeah, you know, some of the greatest players are the worst coaches in the world, you know. So they naturally can do it, yeah. They didn't have to figure it out, they just could just get that ball across the end zone. And they can't understand why somebody can't do it. Yeah. That's why it's like mediocre players like you know, like me, were good coaches. Like me, yeah. We had to, we had to we had to figure out how to do it mentally, you know, and and figure out how to compete with the guy that was a great actor. Yeah, I wasn't gonna out jump anybody, you know.
