The School Yard

In the previous episodes, we talked about three pillars of the philosophical approach: 1) awareness, 2) cognitive flexibility, and 3) good character. In episode six, we will try to apply these pillars to the world of education. We will listen to a passage from the book titled “The Schoolyard,” which gives us a short real-life example showing how the absence of these philosophical pillars—especially good character—can create real problems. It shows us how education is not just the transfer of information; it is also about forming ways of thinking, ethics, and flexibility. After that, I will move into a conversation with Professor Sari Nusseibeh about two famous thinkers in the field of education whose ideas have had a significant influence on modern and contemporary educational thought. Then we will bring the discussion back to the Palestinian context and address the challenges facing schools and teachers here in the country, and how we might think about education from a philosophical perspective that brings together both thought and behavior.

ساحة المدرسة

في الحلقات الماضية تحدّثنا عن ثلاثة محاور للنهج الفلسفي: الوعي، الليونة الذهنية، وحُسن الخُلُق. في الحلقة السادسة، سنحاول تطبيق هذه المحاور على ميدان التعليم والتربية. سنستمع إلى مقطع من الكتاب بعنوان "ساحة المدرسة"، يعرض لنا مثالًا واقعيًا مختصرًا يبيّن كيف يمكن لغياب هذه المحاور الفلسفية—وخاصة حُسن الخُلُق—أن يخلق مشكلات حقيقية. كما يوضّح لنا أن التعليم ليس مجرد نقلٍ للمعلومات، بل هو أيضًا تربية على التفكير، وعلى الأخلاق، وعلى المرونة. بعد ذلك، سأنتقل إلى نقاش مع البروفيسور سري نسيبة حول اثنين من أبرز المفكرين في مجال التربية والتعليم، ممن كان لهم تأثير كبير على الفكر التربوي الحديث والمعاصر. ثم سنعيد الحوار إلى السياق الفلسطيني، ونتناول التحديات التي تواجه المدارس والمعلّمين في بلادنا، وكيف يمكن أن نفكّر في التربية من منظور فلسفي يجمع بين الفكر والسلوك.
