Language and the Limits of Understanding

This episode begins with our false assumption that we grasp the world as it is and that others share our understanding of it. Drawing on Sufi thought, ancient greek philoshopy, and a medieval Islamic debate on language and logic, it examines how ideals, meanings, and reality diverge. Professor Nusseibeh offers conceptual resources - humility, context, and dialogue - but also philosophical tools such as individuation for navigating these challenges and fostering understanding for the common good.
