Ever feel the tug-of-war between who you used to be and who God is shaping you to become? We open up about the war within—the pull of the flesh and the call of the Spirit—and why that tension is not a verdict of failure but proof that the Holy Spirit is alive in you. Drawing from Romans 7 and Romans 8, we unpack how conviction signals life, how new desires form, and how surrender turns spiritual theory into everyday transformation.

We contrast the loud, impulsive voice of the flesh with the steady leadership of the Spirit, then get practical about discernment: learning to notice which voice is speaking and choosing the way that leads to peace. You’ll hear why behavior modification falls short without inner renewal, how Galatians 5 reframes desire at the heart level, and what shifts when we move from “try harder” to “yield deeper.” A candid personal reflection shows how willpower, even dressed up in discipline, can’t produce holiness—and how a simple prayer of dependence can unlock real change over time.

To help you walk this out, we share clear steps: name the battle, feed the Spirit with what you consume, practice confession as realignment, invite the Holy Spirit daily with simple prayers, and lean into fellowship that protects your identity. We close with a strong word of encouragement and prayer, reminding you that while temptation is active, grace is greater, and your steps are ordered even on contested ground.

Framing The Inner Battle

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Order My Steps, The Christian Journey, and I'm your host, Reverend Corey Young. And today, we're diving into a message that hits every believer sooner or later, and that is the battle between the flesh and the spirit. If we're honest, some of the greatest battles we face don't happen on the outside, they happen within us. Not in the streets, not in the courtroom, not in the workplace, but in the heart, in the mind, in the will. There's a war going on inside of every believer, a war between who we used to be and who God is calling us to be, between old habits and new identity, between flesh and the spirit. You are not crazy, you are not alone, and yes, you are still saved. This struggle is proof that the Holy Spirit is alive and in you. Let's talk about it. Romans chapter 7, verses 21 through 23 says this. The battle is normal, not a sign of failure. Paul, the same Paul who wrote most of the New Testament, said, When I want to do right, I find myself doing the opposite. If Paul struggle, why do we beat ourselves up for having the same war inside of us? The presence of the struggle doesn't mean you're not saved. In fact, it's evidence that you are. Before Christ, we could sin without conviction. Because there was no inner war. But once you belong to Jesus, the Holy Spirit moves in and the fight begins. When your flesh pulls one way and the spirit pulls the other, that's spiritual proof that you're not who you used to be. If you're in the battle today, take heart and know that God is working. The flesh is loud, but the spirit is steady. The flesh screams for satisfaction. I want it now, I deserve this. Nobody will know. The flesh is emotional, impulsive, and self-serving. It seeks comfort, convenience, and control. But the spirit, on the other hand, he doesn't shout, he leads, he guides, he convicts, he reminds. The Holy Spirit doesn't force your obedience, he invites you into a better way. The flesh reacts, the spirit it redirects. The flesh looks for escape, the spirit brings peace. Part of spiritual maturity is learning how to recognize which voice is talking to you and choose the voice that leads to life. The spirit gives new desires. Many people think salvation is behavioral modification, but it's actually spiritual transformation. The Holy Spirit doesn't just tell you what not to do, he gives you new desires. Galatians 5 says, the Spirit gives desires that are opposite of the flesh. You start wanting what God wants, you start loving what he loves, you start hating what hurts his heart. And that interchange is not your work, it's his work. Yes, there is a battle, but there is also a heifer. Victory comes through surrender. The flesh can't defeat the flesh, you cannot willpower your way into holiness. Victory doesn't come by trying harder, but by surrendering deeper. Romans 8 and 13 tells us, through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature. Meaning the Holy Spirit is the one who gives victory. Your job is not to conquer sin, your job is to yield to the Spirit who can. We win by worship, we stand by dependence, we overcome by walking with Him daily. Here's a little personal reflection. There were a season in my life when I wondered why I kept wrestling with the same things. Lord, I'm saved, but why do I still struggle? I didn't realize I was trying to fight spiritual battles and human strength. I thought discipline alone would fix it. But discipline without spirit is just willpower dressed up in religion. When I began to say, Holy Spirit, I can't do this, but you can. That's when change started to break. It wasn't overnight, but step by step my desires change, my mindset changed, my direction changed. Because change isn't something you perform, it's something God produces when you surrender. Recognize the battle, don't deny it, confront it. Feed the spirit or of the flesh. What you consume influences what you control. Practice confession and repentance. Repentance is not shame, it's realignment. Invite the Holy Spirit daily, just by simply praying. Lead me today, I yield to you. Don't battle alone. Fellowship protects identity. Here's a powerful exhortation. Child of God, you are not defined by the battle. You are defined by the one who fights with you. Yes, flesh is real, but the spirit is stronger. Yes, temptation is active, but grace is greater. Yes, you have a past, but you also have a helper. The struggle is not a sign of defeat, it's a sign of life. God is shaping you, God is strengthening you, God is forming Christ in you. Keep surrendering, keep walking, keep trusting. Your steps are ordered even in the battle. Let us close with a word of prayer. The Heavenly Father, we come to you tonight in praying and asking that you allow the Holy Spirit, dear Lord, to move within us. We thank you for you and your presence in us. We confess that the battle is real, but so are you. Teach us to surrender, train us to recognize your voice, strengthen us to choose truth over temptation, shape our desires, renew our heart, and lead our steps. We trust your power working within us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Thank you for joining me today on Order My Steps, The Christian Journey. I'm your host, Reverend Corey Young. Remember, the battle may be real, but victory is found in the spirit. Until next time, keep growing, keep seeking, keep walking, because your steps are ordered by the Lord.
