What if spiritual maturity isn’t about having it all together, but about surrendering faster, listening quicker, and repenting sooner? We explore the call from 2 Peter 3:18 to grow in both grace and knowledge—and why these two lanes must run side by side for real transformation.

Grace isn’t just a clean slate; it’s power to be formed. We talk through how grace stretches us beyond comfort, builds capacity for love and endurance, and steadies us in valley seasons where character is forged. Then we move into knowledge that goes beyond facts: learning Christ’s voice, turning sermons into practice, and living Scripture when life gets loud. You’ll hear clear markers of maturity—self-control, forgiveness, discipline, and consistency—that show up in quiet choices when nobody is watching.

We also center the role of the Holy Spirit as the agent of growth: convicting, correcting, comforting, and empowering us to obey. No one grows by willpower alone. That’s why we hammer home the line that stops many of us in our tracks: information without application is spiritual stagnation. To push past that wall, we map out simple, daily rhythms—prayer, Scripture, obedience, love, resisting temptation, renewing the mind—that build a steady, deep faith. The challenge is practical: pick one command and apply it today. Grow deeper, not louder, and watch God build a stable life that reflects Jesus.

Salvation Is The Start, Not The Finish

Welcome back to another episode of Order My Steps, The Christian Journey. I'm your host, Reverend Corey Young, and today we're stepping into one of the most important parts of our walk with God, and that is spiritual maturity. You see, salvation is a beginning, but growth is the assignment. Jesus didn't just come to save you, he came to shape you. He didn't just redeem your life, he came to renew your mind. And the scripture tells us plainly in 2 Peter chapter 3, verse 18. But growing the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That means God expects us to grow, not stay the same, not stay stuck, not stay spiritually shallow. Growth is not optional, growth is necessary. So today we're talking about how to grow and what it really means when the word says grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This one verse gives us two lanes of spiritual maturity. The first one is growing in grace. And the next one is growing in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And true maturity requires both. Let's get into the episode. Growing in grace, letting God change what you can. Grace is not just forgiveness, grace is power. Grace is not just wiping your slate clean, grace is God strengthening your walk. When Peter says grow in grace, he's saying, Become more patient with God's process. Become more surrender to God's will. Become more responsive to the Holy Spirit's leading. Let God stretch you beyond conference and convenience. Growing in grace means God doesn't just fix your past, He forms your character, He increases your capacity to love, to forgive, to endure, to trust. Because real growth doesn't happen on the mountaintop. It happens when you're down in your valley. Ask yourself, am I letting God grow me or am I resisting the discomfort that produces maturity? The Holy Spirit will stretch you, convict you, correct you, and lead you, but you must yield yourself to God. Growing in knowledge, knowing Jesus beyond Sunday morning. Knowledge here is not just Bible facts, it's relationship knowledge. Growing in knowledge of Christ means you don't just know what he said, you know his voice. You don't just read scripture, you live scripture. You don't just hear sermons, you apply them. You don't just sing about Jesus, you walk with Jesus. Knowledge without application becomes information. Knowledge with application becomes transformation. That's good. Knowledge without application becomes information. Knowledge with application becomes transformation. The sign of spiritual maturity is not how much scripture you can quote, it's how much scripture you can live. Ask yourself this question. Am I spending time with God daily? Am I growing in understanding, wisdom, and in obedience? Because the more you know him, the more you trust him, and the more you trust him, the more you obey him. Growing requires letting the Holy Spirit lead. Check this out. Nobody grows without the Holy Spirit. Spiritual maturity cannot be self-produced. You cannot grow yourself into spiritual strength any more than a seed can without water. Growth is the work of the Holy Spirit, and He grows you, convicting you, correcting you, comforting you, empowering you, revealing truth, redirecting your steps. Sometimes we think spiritual maturity means we have to have it all together. That's not what it is. Maturity means you surrender faster, you listen quicker, and you repent sooner. A mature believer is not perfect, they are obedient. Growth is measured in behavior, not church attendance. You can attend church and never grow. You can shout, dance, sing, and still be spiritually immature. Growth is proven in your responses, your self-control, your forgiveness, your discipline, your consistency, your choices when nobody sees. Spiritual maturity is when you don't clap back like you used to. You don't fall apart like you used to. You don't gossip like you used to. You don't chase flesh like you used to. You don't need applauses like you used to. You don't rely on emotions like you used to. Growth is not louder, growth is deeper. It's stability, it's discipline, it's wisdom, it's transformation. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where He is maturing you at and where He is still developing you. Growth requires application. Say this with me. Information without application is spiritual stagnation. Again, information without application is spiritual stagnation. Growth happens when you do the word, not just hear it. This is where many believers stop growing. Not because they don't know, but it's because they don't apply. Growth requires daily prayer, daily discipline, daily decisions to obey God, daily crucifying of the flesh, daily walking in love, daily resisting temptation, and daily renewing the mind. Maturity is not one big decision, it's a daily decision. So today, choose one command God has given you and apply it. That is spiritual growth in motion. Here's a closing exhortation. God wants you to grow, not stay in the same cycles, not repeat the same patterns, not live on spiritual milk when he's calling you to spiritual maturity. You were created for death, you were designed for growth, you were ordained for development. So grow in grace, grow in knowledge, and grow in Christ, and watch God build the believer he always intended you to be. Let us close with a word of prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for calling us to grow. Thank you for your grace that strengthens us and your spirit who leads us into maturity. Lord, I pray that grow our minds, grow our hearts, grow our character, grow our faith, grow our obedience. Help us not to settle for the spiritual comfort, but to pursue spiritual growth. Teach us, shape us, and mature us according to your will. And may we walk daily in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. In your Son's Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Thank you for joining me on another episode of Order My Steps, a change life in Christ. And remember, spiritual growth isn't accidental, it's intentional. And every day you have a chance to grow in grace and grow in knowledge. Until next time, keep walking by faith and keep letting God order your steps.
